Going on a trip, it is easier for a while to entrust the watch for a dog to friends or someone close to you. But what if you ask someone for help or are you planning to move to another city or even another country for permanent residence? The only sure way out is to take your friend the dog with you. Animals can be transported on trains, but can dogs be transported on an airplane? Let’s try to figure it out.
Dog air travel conditions
When planning to go on a journey with an animal, you should carefully study the rules of transporting dogs in an airplane:
To notify that there will be a dog on board, it is necessary 36 hours or more before departure;
At the time of booking a ticket, an airline employee must be informed of the breed of the animal, its weight (with and without a container), height, dimensions of the shipping container;
Before departure, the dog must be examined by a veterinarian at the airport (this procedure lasts about 45 minutes, so it is best to arrive at the airport well in advance, at least 2 hours in advance);
The most important vaccination is for rabies, without it the dog will not be allowed on the plane at all. It is important that the animal is vaccinated at least 1 month and a maximum of 12 months before the flight;
Accompany the animal has the right capable citizen over the age of 18 years;
You can sit in the cabin with a dog only in remote places (for example, near the toilet);
It is forbidden to install a container with a dog on the aisle;
It is forbidden to have a container with a dog near the alien child and another animal;
The owner, who travels with the dog, must have a veterinary first aid kit (it is better to consult a doctor about its contents);
It is not allowed to remove the dog from the container during the flight;
It is forbidden to feed animals during the flight, but it can be given water if the transportation of dogs on an airplane lasts more than 5 hours;
A special sticker with information about the animal and its owner is attached to the container with the dog (all these data must be checked before departure);
Due to surges in atmospheric pressure, it is forbidden to give a dog sedatives;
A dog must wear a muzzle, a leash and a collar during the flight (some companies only require a leash and collar);
It is not recommended to feed the dog later than 4 hours before departure;
What dogs can not be transported in the plane
Traveling by air is a serious matter. And of course, not every dog will be allowed to fly without hindrance. So, it is forbidden to fly with sick animals. This refers to serious infectious diseases: rabies, plague, leptospirosis, microsporia and trichophytosis, infectious hepatitis, parvovirus enteritis.
Also, the airline company has the right to prohibit the flight to the owner with a brachycephalic dog (pug, boxer, Shar Pei, Pekingese, etc.). Such animals with a shortened muzzle in the plane may have a problem with breathing and heart due to the non-standard structure of the skull.
It will be denied transportation to heavy dogs, whose body weight in conjunction with the weight of the shipping container exceeds 50 kg. A large dog will not be able to accompany the owner during the flight.
It is unlikely that a dog with dirty wool and an unpleasant odor will be allowed on the flight, as well as an animal that behaves extremely restlessly in a shipping container (you can’t carry even small dogs and puppies on your hands).
A number of airlines do not allow on board puppies under 3 months of age, which, because of their age, have not yet had time to introduce important vaccines. They may not be allowed on a plane with a pregnant bitch, so that the animal does not stiffen during the summer. It is also possible to ban the transportation of an elderly dog (over 10-12 years old), who has poor health, as well as an animal of any age with diseases of the heart and blood vessels, respiratory and nervous systems. Finally, it is impossible not to mention that you can carry no more than 5 dogs at a time, regardless of the size of the animals.
Transportation of dogs in the cabin and luggage compartment of the aircraft
Depending on the size of the animal, representatives of the airline may offer transportation of a dog both in the cabin and in the luggage compartment. Traveling in a cabin in a container in the immediate vicinity of the owner (carrying with a dog is placed near the owner’s feet) are allowed to animals whose weight with shipping container does not exceed 8 kg. You can carry two adult dogs or three puppies at the same time, if their total weight with containers is not more than 8 kg.
If the total weight of an animal and a container is more than 8 kg, then a dog can only be carried in an airplane in the luggage compartment. In the same place it is authorized to transport potentially dangerous dogs: fighting, guard, guard and aggressive dogs of any breed.
Shipping container for dogs on the plane
Now let’s talk about what should be a container or cage for transporting dogs:
Containers for transportation in the luggage compartment should be made of high-quality and durable plastic. In the cabin, you can carry a dog in a resealable soft carrying bag;
The inner walls of the container should not have sharp corners and protrusions, so that the animal could not get hurt;
The doors and walls of the container should not have openings larger than 25×25 mm, so that the animal would not be able to pull a paw, tail or nose into such cells;
The container door must be iron and reliable, with good locks, so that the animal, even when trying to escape, could not open its transportation "house";
The bottom of the cage in which the dog will be transported must be waterproof;
The bottom of the carrying case should be covered with a cloth and absorbent diaper;
Good ventilation is an important requirement for a dog carrier;
It is important that the travel cage is convenient for the animal. While in it, the dog should easily get up and lie down, sit;
Required documents for transporting an animal
A flight with a dog in an airplane is possible only if you have documents. So, for unimpeded transportation in Russia and the CIS, you will need a properly decorated veterinary passport (with an indication of the breed of the animal, its age, color, nickname, sex, host data, obligatory notes about the vaccines made and the anthelminthic and anthoobs and tick-borne treatments carried out). In addition to vetpasporta will be mandatory state certificate number 1 indicating the data of the dog (nickname, gender, age, etc.), as well as information about the upcoming route and the results of the inspection of the animal. Such a document can be obtained in the state veterinary hospital, arriving there with a dog and its veterinary passport. Important: state certification should not be received earlier than 5 days before departure, otherwise it will be considered invalid.
When planning to go overseas flight, we strongly recommend the owner to familiarize himself with the legislation of the country in advance, to clarify whether it is possible to bring pets there at all, which dogs are allowed on the plane, whether the dog should be microchipped, what the age of the dog should be, what vaccinations should be made and what documents may be required.
How much is a dog’s journey in an airplane
In the cabin, free of charge and without a shipping container, it is allowed to carry service dogs and guide dogs (if there are supporting documents). For an ordinary home dog, you will need to pay for non-standard baggage (a special plane ticket is not required for a dog). Consider the pricing of the most popular airline of our country, PJSC Aeroflot: for transporting dogs in Russia, the owner will be asked to pay 3,750 rubles to the amount of his ticket, and for international transportation they will take an equivalent of 75 €.
Preparing a dog for air transportation
Finding out how to transport a dog in an airplane, the owner should be aware of the preparation for this no doubt an exciting event. We learn what needs to be done some time before the flight:
To accustom a dog to the container in which transportation will be carried out. Ideally, the dog should absolutely fearlessly enter the cage (carrying bag, container, etc.) at the owner’s command;
Visit the dog at the airport. This is desirable if the animal rarely visits crowded places and flies for the first time. A crowd of worried people and loud announcements of a dispatcher can provoke a panic from an unprepared doggie;
Prepare a veterinary first aid kit. As we mentioned above, its composition is better to consult a doctor. By the way, just in case it is better to arm yourself with the phone number of the vet in case the animal will feel unimportant after the flight;
Stock up on absorbent diapers and wet wipes. In an airplane, a dog can easily meet its natural needs, it can also vomit. Will have to clean the owner;
Finally, directly on the day of departure, you need to feed the dog for an hour or a half before leaving the house, and then walk with it. It is important to check all documents, clarify whether everything is taken from the necessary, calm down and go to the airport a couple of hours before departure time.
