Transporting a dog in a car is a task that almost everyone faces. For an animal, unfamiliar sounds, smells and motion sickness can create a stressful and traumatic environment, a car interior can suffer from improper transportation, and if a frightened animal interferes with the driver, people can. Therefore, the question of transporting the dog in the car should be thought out very carefully.
The rules for the transport of animals are no different from the rules for the carriage of goods in the car. The dog should not interfere with the driver to drive the car, close his review. The rest of the animal can be transported as you please, in the front or rear seat, with or without a cage, this law does not stipulate.
Sometimes traffic police officers try to write out a fine for improper transportation of animals on the basis that the dog must have a certificate from the state veterinary clinic. But you should know that this provision applies only to transportation under a transportation contract or in public transport; transportation of a dog in a private car is not a transportation, since in principle it does not fall within the scope of civil law. Therefore, if you are charged a fine, you can go to court and do not pay the fine. Although the traffic police are well aware of the real rules of transporting dogs, so often the problem can be solved on the spot, simply by politely showing their awareness.
Documents on the dog you have the right to demand only if you are going to hunt. A quadruped helper should have a vet passport with all the vaccinations required by age, and the animal itself must be entered on the hunting ticket or have a hunting dog passport – but these rules apply only when the dog is in the hunting ground.
Transport options for dogs without a cage
The easiest option – just inside the car or in the hands of the passenger. It is suitable for small dogs. If the dog calmly carries the trip, it can hold on the hands all the way. There are also special baskets and bags for transporting small dogs that can be installed in the back or front seat. There are several disadvantages of a dog in the cabin:
- Danger to the animal in case of an accident;
- The animal itself can provoke an accident, distracting the driver;
- Dirt from the paws in the cabin;
- Scratched seats and doors.
The problem of dirt can be solved with the help of a special seat cover, it is mounted on the rear seats and protects them from dirt and claws. But an animal moving freely through the cabin can create many problems. Yes, and for the dog itself is not the most convenient option, the animal is difficult to keep in a stable position during sharp turns and stops.
The solution may be a harness for dogs, it is installed in the back seat and does not allow the dog to move freely around the cabin, while not isolating the animal. An additional plus of such a decision is the safety of the dog in case of an accident: just like any other object in the cabin, the animal will fly forward when struck and can be seriously injured.
Much less restricts the movement of the dog (and protects it from injury during a collision) special harness, fastened to the seat belt or the belt itself. This is an effective and inexpensive way to make a dog sit in his place and not interfere with the driver. Also, your pet will not run away, even if the car for some reason remains open.
Another convenient device for transportation in the car – hammock for rear seats, in the car, it creates a significant and safe space where a dog can travel. A hammock will protect the seats from damage and isolate the pet from the driver, without disturbing him to look through the windows and move within the hammock. The dog can sit comfortably lying or sitting, without causing any harm to the upholstery. There are models on the market that cover the entire space of the rear seats and two-thirds of the rear, and hammocks are distinguished by the presence or absence of protection for the doors. A hammock costs about a thousand rubles., it is attached with special loops for the headrests of the rear and front seats or the corners of the seats. When choosing, you should pay attention to the fact that different models of large hammocks fit different models of cars, small ones are universal.
Carriage in a cage or carry
This is the best option for transporting a pet over long distances if accommodation in the cabin is undesirable. The transport cage restricts the movement of the dog and to some extent protects it in a collision. This is a good option if the dog is not accustomed to the car, and the need for transportation rarely arises.
But when choosing a cage and transporting a dog in it, several main points should be taken into account:
- The size. It should allow the animal to freely turn in the cage, stand up and lie down comfortably;
- The cage material must be strong enough if the dog is prone to gnawing on the furnishings or not carrying the road;
- The shipping container itself must be firmly fixed in the cabin or trunk. To do this, use cells of the maximum size that fits in the cabin or special belts.
If you do not accustom the dog to the cage in advance, traveling together can be extremely unpleasant. It is easiest for a few days before the road to move the dog’s litter into the cage, to allow the animal to get used to an unfamiliar object and stay inside the cage. If you spend minimal preparatory work, the journey will be much calmer.
How to prepare a dog for travel
Proper preparation of the car for transportation is a very important element of a quiet road if you take your pet with you. But it is equally important to prepare the dog itself for the road.
To accustom the dog to the car and transportation in the cabin you need from childhood, the sooner and more often your pet will drive in the car, the faster you will get rid of excess nervousness during transportation and the problem of motion sickness. As a rule, special training is not required, it is enough just to carry a puppy often in the car. But if the dog is adult or shy, to get acquainted with the machine should be approached more thoroughly. First, the animal should be allowed to get comfortable in an unfinished car, several times – to sniff around an unfamiliar object, to investigate it. Then leave the dog for a few more minutes in the car with the engine turned on, only then you can start taking the dog with you on a short trip, this method will allow you to avoid too much stress, which will permanently bind the car in dog consciousness with unpleasant sensations.
When preparing for the trip, be sure to provide for the protection of the cabin in case the puppy will vomit or have diarrhea – this happens with almost all the first few trips, and some dogs do not tolerate motion sickness until the end of their lives. Another common problem is excessive salivation, which causes stress. Most road problems are cured by habituation of an animal for carriage. But it should be understood that even a nervous and cowardly dog, accustomed to traveling, may behave unpredictably during difficult road situations, so it is dangerous to transport it without fixing it in the cabin.
If there is a long way to go, you should ensure that the dog along the way was able to eat and drink. Healthy mentally dogs do not go to the toilet for themselves, so the animal will suffer, but two or three times a day you still need to give the animal to stretch its paws and go to the toilet.
Transporting a dog can be a real problem if the animal is not used to traveling, it will be under great stress and can behave dangerously for both the driver and for himself. Therefore, it is very important to teach your pet from the puppy age to the chosen mode of transportation. In this case, the animal will tolerate even the most difficult and long way calmly.
