8 Best Telescopic Hedge Trimmers in 2023. Long hedge trimmer electric

Best Telescopic Hedge Trimmers in 2023

Tall, fast-growing hedges are an incredible sight to behold because they’re beautiful when appropriately maintained and provide privacy around your home.

Trimming and maintaining them, however, requires time, effort, and, most importantly, the right cutting tools.

The single most important tool you need in this situation is a telescoping or telescopic hedge trimmer with a pole that increases your reach so you can trim and shape the top edges and sides beautifully.

These tall, fast-growing hedges can grow over 6ft tall, which is taller than most people, and thus using a standard handheld trimmer will no longer be an option.

Why Use a Telescoping Hedge Trimmer

If you already have a standard handheld trimmer, you may consider using it instead of buying the one with the telescoping function. Using the handheld unit, however, will require you to use a step ladder along with it.

It will also require you to move the ladder a lot so as to reach every part of the hedges, and that will not only tire you out quickly but will also be inefficient.

On the other hand, using a telescopic hedge trimmer will allow you to reach even the top edges of the hedges even while standing on the ground.

It comes with a shaft or pole that can be adjusted to increase or reduce the length allowing you to work safely and comfortably from the ground.

The cutting head or blade can also be pivoted to different angles or positions, enabling you to trim the different sides of your hedge standing in a position you’re most comfortable with.

The pole of some telescoping trimmers can be removed, and the head or blade can be fitted with a normal handle, converting it to a standard handheld unit for trimming low-lying shrubs and hedges, which makes them even more versatile to use.

We’ve taken our time to test and review several telescopic hedge trimmers and selected 6 we strongly believe are the best for the job.

Here are the 8 we selected.

Max Shaft Length: 8 ft., Blade Size: 18-1/8 inches. Cutting Angles: 10, Weight: 9.78 lbs Power Source: Cordless

The Makita XNU05Z is undoubtedly one of the best telescoping hedge trimmers you can get your hands on today. It features a shaft that telescopes from 6 ft to 8 ft, enabling you to reach and trim tall shrubs neatly without overreaching. The cutting head can be pivoted through 10 angles to enable you to trim every part of the hedges in any position that’s most comfortable for you. It features an 18-1/8 inch dual-action blade so you can cut faster in both ways over a wide area. Even though it’s cordless, the Makita XNU05Z is not lacking in power. It comes equipped with a motor that delivers up to 3,600 strokes per minute, ensuring it cuts efficiently through shrubs and hedges. This model comes with the tool only. So, unless you already have some Makita tools with LXT batteries, you’ll have to buy an 18V battery to power it. Overall, the Makita XNU05Z is surely one tool I’ll recommend to anyone looking for a good trimmer to take care of hedges and shrubs around the home. It’s very lightweight compared to a gas trimmer, and since it’s cordless, you don’t have to worry about the cord length of a corded unit or the noise of a gas-powered one.

The blade has a cutting capacity of 5/8 inches that allows the user to cut through both brushes and hedges without getting stuck. They’re sharp and cut really well, cleanly through the hedges. With up to 22.4 inches in length, the dual-action or double-sided steel blade can cut both forward and backward, covering a large area and ensuring you don’t have to over-maneuver it when using it.The head can be adjusted from 0 to 180 degrees with 5 adjustable positions, which makes it very versatile, allowing you to reach every corner of your hedges and shape them just the way you want. As for battery life, the 20V lithium-ion battery that comes with it provides plenty of power to complete a medium-sized job. The only drawback I can see is that it’s quite heavy right at the top since the motor is situated at the top, right in the trimmer head. So, you can start to feel a little bit of fatigue after some time of holding it upwards. Apart from that, however, the MZK cuts excellently, it’s easy to adjust, and it will surely be a great addition to the tools in your shed.

ProsCons
It’s easy to use. It’s a bit heavy without the shoulder strap.

The cutting head swivels from 0-180 degrees and can lock into 1 of 7 different positions to ensure cuts are made easily at different angles. With a total length of 8.5 ft, this is not the longest pole trimmer you’ll find in the market, but it definitely gets the job done on 6 ft tall hedges and brushes. As usual, one of the drawbacks of telescopic hedge trimmers like this is that they can be cumbersome since you sometimes have to raise them to cut the top. The 80V Greenworks pro weighs 12.78 lbs which is quite heavy and thus fatigues the arms after some time. However, it works pretty well, cuts cleanly, requires little maintenance, and produces zero emissions during use.

Like many other power tools from WORX, this telescoping hedge trimmer is cordless and uses the WORX Power Share battery that enables you to use the same battery with both their 20V and 40V tools. Most telescoping trimmers are handheld, and the height of your hedges might sometimes require you to hold them up, which can easily cause fatigue to your arms if the tool is heavy. The Worx WG252.9 only ways 7.6 lbs which is not as heavy as some of the other units we’ve seen. This means you can use it for a considerable amount of time without fatigue. Overall, the Worx WG252.9 is a tool I can confidently recommend to anyone looking for a good long-reach hedge trimmer because it offers a high reach of about 12 ft, the telescoping action is smooth, it’s highly adjustable, and the less weight makes it very easy to use.

Without being extended, the pole of the Garcare GPHT07 telescopic hedge trimmer already boasts an impressive length of 7.1 ft, and you get a total length of 9.2 ft when fully extended. That overall length of 9.2 ft increases your reach and enables you to trim and shape tall hedges in your yard without a ladder. You can extend and lock the pole at the exact length you’re okay with, allowing you to work at a height you’re comfortable with or according to the size of the shrubs you want to trim. It can be shifted and locked into 6 different angles so you can use it comfortably. Powering the whole setup is a 4.3 Amps motor which drives the blades. Overall, I believe the Garcare GPHT07 features everything you need to take care of tall overgrown hedges and keep them in good shape and condition.

ProsCons
The blade is sharp and cuts neatly. Difficult to handle when fully extended
Build quality is good. It’s not flimsy.

Frequently Asked Questions

If your hedges have thick branches, what you should consider when choosing a trimmer is the cutting capacity of its blades. Some blades have a cutting capacity of 5/8 inches, and some are 5/8 inches, and so on. The greater the cutting capacity, the thicker the branches it can cut through. So, always check the cutting capacity to choose one suitable for your project.

When fully extended, the trimmer’s overall length determines how much reach you have with tall hedges. Telescoping trimmers come in various sizes and extensions from 6 feet to 9 feet. You just have to consider the size of the hedges you want to cut and how tall they might be in the future so that you can choose one that you can continue to use as time goes on.

All three options are great, depending on your personal preferences and situation. If you get a cordless unit, all you have to worry about is charging the battery. They’re also more portable and produce no noise and fumes during use. The battery, however, runs down, and you need time to recharge it.Corded units also produce no fuel and fumes during use but could be more portable. To cover a long area, you need a long extension cord, or you can connect it to a closer power outlet. There are gas-powered telescopic hedge trimmers as well. They’re more powerful and run for as long as you want, but they require more maintenance. They’re also quite noisy and produce fumes.Turning on a cordless and corded unit only requires plugging in the battery or an extension cord and pressing a trigger or switch. On the other hand, starting a gas-powered unit does require more effort. First, you have to pull the start cord until you hear the engine start up. Then you can trim with it.All 3 options have advantages and disadvantages. You have to consider them and choose what you’re most comfortable with.

The 5 Best Long Reach Hedge Trimmer Picks For 2023 UK

Both corded and cordless units require little to no maintenance. You only need to remember to oil the blades before and after use.Gas-powered ones, however, do require some engine maintenance. The blades also need to be oiled as well.

The most straightforward answer is No. Although it can, it’s not meant for cutting lawn grasses. You can get a string trimmer or lawn mower for that.

Our Best Electric Hedge Trimmer Top 5

Types of Hedge Trimmers

Hedge trimmers come in 3 main types, including:

  • The corded type we’ll discuss here,
  • Diesel or petrol motors,
  • Cordless electric using, typically lithium-ion, batteries.

Each hedge trimmer has its own advantages and disadvantages.

But what each type of trimmer shares in common is convenience when you compare it to a manually-operated pair of hand shears. Not only is it faster to use hedge trimmers, but you’ll also get a much neater and consistent finish on your hedgerows than shears will.

After years of hacking away at bushes with secateurs and other hand tools (and being disappointed with the results), I finally switched to electric hedge trimmers and I’ve never looked back. I didn’t want to spend too much, so I was looking for the best electric hedge trimmer under 50.

I didn’t want to deal with fuel or the constant need to replenish batteries, so I chose a corded hedge trimmer.

Tips Before Getting Started With Your Hedge Trimmer

Newly-planted hedges need regular trimming to establish the shape in which they will grow, though they’ll need regular maintenance for life.

Though it might seem as simple as firing up your motor and attacking the bushes, they should slope inwardly towards the top to make sure that the lower leaves receive enough sunlight.

Although, if you’re like me and prefer the jungle-style hedge, just go wild and shape your hedge on the fly. It’ll still look great and, I suppose, your plants will grow back if you didn’t get it quite right.

Also take into account the time of year; nesting birds are common in the early spring months.

You could simply rake up the branches from the hedges when you’re finished, but it’s much easier to lay a tarpaulin on the ground to save you time. You’ll also want to lubricate the trimmer’s blades with a spray-on oil lubricant before starting the motor.

And don’t forget to clean the blades down once you’re done (or at least regularly, I know how it goes), as debris will tend to stick to the lubricant and could clog up the mechanisms.

Maneuvering and Handling Your Corded Hedge Trimmer

When you’re choosing a hedge trimmer, maneuverability should be at the forefront of your mind.

Remember what I said about hedgerows that curve inwards towards the top; you won’t be standing stationary while cutting in a single direction. You’ll need a tool that can easily be twisted and turned without placing strain on your arms or back and compromising safety.

There are several features that affect the maneuverability of a hedge trimmer.

  • Firstly, the positioning of the motor can affect weight distribution. The further back the motor is positioned, the closer to your center mass the weight will be, making it easier to handle.
  • Secondly, the length of the blades can also affect weight distribution, though go too short and you’ll have less reach when it comes to trimming.
  • Finally, specialized features, like the Greenworks trimmer’s rotating handles, can make it easier to trim the top of your hedges.

I found a useful video on YouTube that provides a few tips and illustrates how to handle your tool around the hedgerows – check it out below.

Keeping Yourself Safe While Trimming a Hedge

The temptation might be there to look for a model with a trigger lock, which keeps the motor running even if you let go of the switch.

Sure, it’s convenient, but it also increases the risk of injury should you trip or fall and let go of the handgrips.

From personal experience, there are occasions when the automatic shutoff has been a blessing, but I’ve never found myself yearning for a trigger lock. Remember, if you have to reach far enough that you can’t depress the trigger, you shouldn’t be doing it.

I’d also recommend picking up a sturdy pair of safety glasses, as well as ear protectors. Though any good trimmer will include a guard behind the blades to prevent chippings from flying back towards you, it’s not infallible, and I can tell you that having wood shavings in your eyes is not a nice experience.

Meanwhile, the ear protectors will make sure that your hearing isn’t damaged – though you’re safer with a low-amp electric motor. Typically, it’s the diesel motors that produce the greatest noise.

Our Best Electric Hedge Trimmer under 50 Top 5

Greenworks 22-Inch 4 Amp Dual-Action Corded Hedge Trimmer

The Greenworks 22-inch hedge trimmer features a steel dual-action blade. This means it has teeth that extend down both sides of the functional blade, which helps to stabilize the trimmer and reduce vibrations through into the handle.

A rear-mounted perspex screen stops chippings from flying back into your face, though I’d personally recommend a pair of safety goggles from experience. The secondary function is as a handguard so your fingers aren’t at risk of slipping into the blades.

Its powerful 4-Amp motor can tackle hedgerows and other foliage, and should also take down small tree branches with ease. The 22” blade isn’t too unwieldy and promises a cutting capacity of 5/8-inches, though if you shell out a few more dollars for the newer model, this increases to 9/16-inches.

There’s no trigger lock built into this model, meaning you’ll have to keep the grip handle depressed to operate the trimmer. Though this might seem like a drawback, I can think of at least one occasion where an automatic shutoff has saved me a trip to the emergency room.

There’s also a cord lock built into the chassis, which is a great way to stop the plug from disconnecting when you pull the power cord too far out.

Pros of the Greenworks Best Corded Hedge Trimmer

  • Thanks to the combination of a 3-position auxiliary handle and rotating rear handle, you won’t have to contort your body to reach the top of your hedgerows.
  • You may long for a trigger lock to keep the motor running, but the absence of a lock can help to reduce serious injuries if you trip or slip.
  • The 4-Amp motor is powerful enough to handle thick shrubbery and even some small tree branches.

Cons of the Greenworks Corded Hedge Trimmer

  • Though it’s lightweight enough to use for long periods in the garden, this is the second heaviest trimmer we’ve included on our list (at 5.7 pounds).
  • It features a two-prong power lead whereas many outdoor power outlets use three-pronged connections, so you may need an adapter.
  • Greenworks advertise the trimmer as having a 5/8-inch cutting capacity, though the out-of-the-box manual states that it’s just 3/8-inch.
  • It’s likely you’ll need something more powerful to take on larger jobs, such as cutting through thick tree branches.
  • 4 Amp motor to get the job done efficiently
  • 22″ dual action steel blade for optimal performance and maneuvering
  • 9/16″ cutting capacity perfect for bushes and shrubs
  • Lightweight and compact design for easy handling
  • Convenient cord lock to prevent accidental unplugging
  • Voltage:120v

Sun Joe HJ22HTE 22″ 3.5 Amp Electric Hedge Trimmer

Sun Joe is big on safety, which is why this trimmer comes equipped with 3 different mechanisms for keeping you in one piece.

There’s a safety guard to stop your hands from slipping close to the blades, as well as a dual-handed safety switch to prevent unintentional starts. Thirdly, there’s a blade cover included as standard.

Thanks to dual-action 22-inch blades that run the length of both sides, cutting efficiency is far better than you’d get with a single blade.

Unfortunately, the jury is out on whether the blades are truly stainless-steel as advertised, or whether they’re iron as the box suggests.

Opinions seem to conflict and there’s a lack of confirmation directly from Sun Joe. Iron blades would of course rust if left wet, so be sure to take care of them when you’re done using it, but it shouldn’t be enough to put you off what is a great budget hedge trimmer.

Possibly one of its greatest selling points is its weight. At just 5 pounds, you’ll fatigue far more slowly when tackling the larger hedges or bushes in your garden. And thanks to the full wrap-around front handle, the weight is evenly distributed so that you can achieve those detailed edges you’ve always wanted.

Pros of the Sun Joe Electric Hedge Trimmer

  • ETL approved, meaning that it has been fully tested for compliance with North American safety standards.
  • There’s a built-in dual-handed safety trigger to stop you from accidentally starting up the motor in a dangerous position.
  • The power cord features a strain relief mechanism so that you won’t accidentally tug it out of the power outlet.

Cons of the Sun Joe Electric Hedge Trimmer

  • The advertised stainless-steel blades are listed as iron on the box, which causes some confusion – it’s best to keep them dry regardless.
  • With a 3.5-Amp motor under the hood, it’s weaker than some competing trimmers at a similar price point
  • This features a wraparound handle, but it lacks the rotating functionality of others like the Greenworks trimmer.
  • Sun Joe HJ22HTE-PRO 20-Inch 3.8 Amp Electric Hedge Trimmer, Green
  • Lawn and garden product
  • Outdoor accessories
  • A quality product

WORX WG212 3.8 Amp 20″ Electric Hedge Trimmer

The Worx WG212 is powered by a 3.8-Amp motor that produces next to no vibrations while it’s running. All the legwork is done by a 20-inch blade with a 3/4-inch cutting capacity.

Like most models, there’s a clear safety guard that helps to stop your hands from touching the blades, as well as preventing chippings from being kicked back into your face.

At 6.6 pounds, the WG212 comes in at around the mid-range for hedge trimmers in this price bracket.

Despite the average weight, the body and handle are lightweight and slimline by design, and when combined with the 3/4-inch cutting capacity, it’s the perfect trimmer for achieving detailed, neat edges.

In terms of operation, there’s a single hand safety trigger for kicking off the motor, while the D-grip handle on the front makes it simple to trim the top or sides of your hedgerows.

There’s no trigger lock for your safety, so you’ll need to keep it depressed while trimming. Ideally, I’d have liked to see the inclusion of a rotating handle for greater ease of use when reaching these areas, but you can easily make do without it.

Overall, the WG212 is a good example of why you don’t always have to reach for a big brand name like BlackDecker to get the job done.

Pros of the Worx Electric Hedge Trimmer Under 50

  • As the motor is positioned behind the grip, your hands tend to fatigue more slowly than with forward-positioned motors.
  • The slimline profile of the trimmer makes it easier to navigate small and tight spaces.
  • This model suffers from practically zero vibrations from the motor or blades, which makes handling far easier.
  • Requires an extension cord, which reduces the risk of you accidentally cutting through the power cord – trust me, I’ve been there.

Cons of the Worx Electric Hedge Trimmer Under 50

  • As budget hedge trimmers go, this isn’t the lightest, coming in at 6.6 pounds.
  • The WG212 lacks a rotational handle that you’ll see in competitor models at a similar price point, though the slimline design helps alleviate this somewhat.
  • There’s no lock for keeping the activation trigger depressed; some people care about this, but personally, I think it’s worth the additional safety.
  • Though using an extension cord can be beneficial, you’ll need to reach into your wallet to purchase one separately.
  • 3.8 Amp Electric
  • 3/4-inch cutting diameter and dual action blades
  • 20-Inch cutting bar and 3/4-inch depth
  • Slimmer design for easier maneuvering
  • Clear safety guard for protection

BLACKDECKER BEHT150 Hedge Trimmer

The BlackDecker BEHT150 is powered by a 3.2-Amp motor that claims to slice through branches up to 5/8-inches.

At 4.6 pounds, it’s two-thirds the weight of one of the heaviest trimmers I’ve included on this list, making it suited to long sessions reaching those pesky tops and sides of tall hedgerows.

Just bear in mind that the blades are fairly short at 17-inches, so unless you’re taller than average, you’re going to want to look elsewhere for the highest-reaching branches.

The startup switch is pressure-activated without a lock mechanism, so you can’t release the trigger and continue trimming.

Rather than a cable grip, there’s a cord retention slot underneath the rear handle and trigger to prevent accidental unplugging. It’s narrower than I would like, though this does mean a very secure fit once the cable is in place. It’s also located very close to the trigger, so catching your fingers on the looped cable isn’t impossible.

One of my favorite features is the safety switch, which resets every time you operate the trimmer. To kick the motor off again, you have to depress the safety switch first, before pulling the trigger. It would be incredibly difficult to trigger the blades accidentally in any scenario, which greatly reduces the chance of you cutting through the cable.

Pros of the BlackDecker Best Electric Hedge Trimmer

  • Backed by a standard BlackDecker warranty lasting 2 years.
  • Has an additional safety measure in the form of a two-switch startup mechanism.
  • Shorter blades mean a more lightweight and easily maneuverable tool, so your arms won’t fatigue as quickly.
  • The blades are crafted from hardened steel, which is said to reduce vibrations through the handle by up to 40%.

Cons of the BlackDecker Best Electric Hedge Trimmer

  • The cord lock is fairly narrow and can be fiddly to work with when you’re trying to insert the cable inside.
  • With 17-inch dual-action blades, this hedge trimmer has the shortest blades of the 5 trimmers I’ve included by a large margin.
  • The design choice for the forward handle is odd; rather than a rounded handle, there’s a T handle mounted on the front, which I find to be more difficult to grip securely.
  • The electric edge trimmer features 17-inch dual-action hardened steel blade for reduced.
  • 3.2 amp motor for trimming branches up to 5/8 inch
  • Lightweight, compact design of the trimmers for plants is easy to use with less fatigue
  • Cord retention prevents accidental unplugging. Cutting Strokes/Min-3800
  • Built-in T-handle and full-length trigger for control while cutting

Scotts HT10020S 20-Inch 3.2-Amp Corded Electric Hedge Trimmer

Honestly, the only major issue I had with this trimmer was the decision of the manufacturer to use a knob for the forward grip rather than using a circular handle like every other trimmer. Even though this tool weighs only 4.8 pounds, it’s more difficult – and dare I say, less safe – to maneuver, as you just can’t get the same kind of full-handed grip.

As there’s no extension cord included out of the box, you’ll have to spend a few more dollars sourcing one yourself. Bear the size of your garden in mind when you’re picking one up, as I can attest to having been caught out in the past by a short power cable that won’t reach the rear hedgerows.

Once you’ve got it plugged in, there’s a cable grip under the rear handle, which prevents you from accidentally tugging the plug out of its socket.

In terms of cutting power, the HT10020S uses a dual-action 20-inch blade made from hardened steel, which reduces the chance of rusting. Its cutting capacity is 5/8-inches, with 3,400 strokes per minute. Or to put it more simply, it’s powerful.

Although the blades fall 2-inches short of many competing models, you’ll only notice the difference if you’re tackling some seriously large hedgerows or tree branches that are out of reach.

Pros of the Scotts Corded Electric Hedge Trimmer

  • This was the lightest electric hedge trimmer under 50 that I could find, without sacrificing functionality or quality.
  • There’s an extensive 3-year warranty by default. In my experience, if budget trimmers are going to fail, then they usually fail early.
  • Includes a lightweight blade cover for storage, but make sure you clean and dry your blades as the cover won’t prevent rust if moisture is present.
  • You can attach your extension cord to a hook within the handgrip to reduce the chance of accidental shutoff or tripping.

Cons of the Scotts Corded Electric Hedge Trimmer

  • You can find many hedge trimmers under 50 that have 22-inch blades, whereas this model only comes with dual-action 20-inch blades.
  • Much like the BlackDecker hedge trimmer, the forward grip is a T handle, which I find to be less of a secure grip.
  • You’ll have to buy your own extension cord, however, this hedge trimmer is one of the cheapest top-quality tools we could find.
  • Powerful electric grass trimmer that is powered by a 3.2-Amp motor for trimming hedges and.
  • 20″ electric hedge trimmer with a durable dual-action steel blade that gives you a 5/8″.
  • Corded hedge trimmer that gives you 3400 strokes per minute; Comfortable full-length.
  • Electric hedge clipper with a built-in cord retention hook for maneuverability and easy.

How To Select The Best Extendable Hedge Trimmer?

We have discussed some of the best options for hedge trimmers. All good quality pole hedge trimmers have a few features in common. These are the features you need to keep in mind while making a selection.

A. Blade

Typically, the effectiveness of the trimmer boils down to the blade’s sharpness and size. It determines what the trimmer can do. So, if your tool is small or average, you can work with a blade as small as 16 inches.

However, if you have slightly larger or average hedges, you will at least need an 18 inches blade. But a blade 20 inches or larger is mandatory for robust or larger hedges.

Beyond the blade length, you must also consider how far the teeth are when shopping for the trimmer. Tougher and larger hedges require teeth that are further apart to get the job done.

B. Power Source

It is another one of the most crucial things you need to put thought into when choosing the best pole hedge trimmer and you have three options to select from:

Battery-powered – They have similar advantages as the corded ones and are usually quiet and clean. Further, one of its biggest pros is your movement is not curtailed by a cord.

However, its primary disadvantage is that you can function only as long as the battery lasts. So, when the juice is over, you will have to stop to recharge. It is ideal for people who work away from a power source or do not like the cord dangling around.

best, telescopic, hedge, trimmers, 2023, long

Corded – These have surged in popularity in the last few years. They are cleaner than gas-powered trimmers and do not yield so much noise. Further, they can give tough competition to the gas trimmers in power.

Of course, the primary drawback of this trimmer is its cord, which limits the range. These are ideal for people who work where the power source is accessible.

Gas-powered – These traditional hedge trimmers offer maximum flexibility as you can take them anywhere. Power source does not limit you. So anytime the fuel exhausts, you can put more fuel in and continue working.

These are perfect for commercial-grade or heavy-duty work but are also suited for home gardening. However, they will be relatively more expensive and noisy and demand more maintenance than the other two listed above.

D. Choose The Best Long Reach Hedge Trimmer With Max Pole Extension Length

While some pole hedge trimmers extend, others do not, and some extend more than others. How much extension is ideal for you depends on how high your hedges are.

A good extension length is what you need to reach the top without needing a ladder if you have tall hedges. But, if you do not have very high hedges, you can opt for an average-length trimmer.

E. Weight

You should choose the lightest pole hedge trimmer, sans any compromise on reach, durability, efficiency, and power. A lightweight hedge trimmer can help you work effortlessly for long hours without getting tired or feeling arm fatigue.

F. Cut Capacity

It implies the branch’s diameter that the trimmer can seamlessly cut. So, if you wish to undertake heavy-duty jobs, you must pick a tool with a larger capacity.

G. Rotating head

Most pole hedge trimmers we reviewed above have this feature. It is more crucial than you think when it comes to comfortable and efficient use. The rotating head lets you move the head to the desired angle and adds more flexibility to your work. It prevents fatigue and adds more perfection to the task.

H. Price

Whether you choose a cordless pole hedge trimmer or a corded one, high-performance and good-quality pole hedge trimmers will also have a higher price tag. We recommend shopping for a good quality tool, even if it costs a little extra. It will function well and last you a long.

However, if you wish to indulge in occasional trimming, you can opt for the budget variant to perform the task. Please note the gas-powered pole trimmers cost more than the battery-powered ones, and the battery-powered pole trimmers are costlier than the corded ones. So, choose accordingly.

I. Warranty

It is good to have a warranty. The longer the warranty, the safer you feel if anything goes wrong with the tool during the warranty window. So, always pick a hedge trimmer with a long warranty.

J. Noise

Some trimmers are louder than others. For instance, the gas-based models are louder than the portable or electric models. Having said that, most hedge trimmers are noisy. So, pick one that is easy on the ears, and always wear protective gear to shield your sensitive sense organ while working in the garden.

Best Pole

Ryobi Cordless Battery Pole Hedge Trimmer

Best Gas

Echo 20-Inch 21.2 cc Gas 2-Stroke Hedge Trimmer

While electric cordless hedge trimmers are lightweight, quieter, and less-expensive than other types, They’re not as heavy-duty or powerful as their gas-powered counterpart. They also require rechargeable battery management which can be a pain—especially when you’ve accidentally run out of battery juice halfway through a job.

If you’re set on a cordless hedge trimmer that’s gas-powered rather than battery-powered, you’ll want to consider the Echo Gas 2-Stroke Hedge Trimmer. This powerful hedge trimmer is designed for use around the backyard, but it could easily work in a professional or commercial setting as well. It features a double-sided and double-reciprocating razor edge blade which cuts through shrubs, branches, and brush in very little time. It also boasts ergonomic handles that help make precision cutting as easy and pain-free as possible.

The Echo Gas 2-Stroke Hedge Trimmer also comes complete with a covetable commercial-grade felt air filter, which helps improve engine life and filtration efficiency. A convenient grease fitting allows for regular maintenance to help extend this trimmer’s overall lifespan as well.

If noise is a concern for you when considering the best cordless hedge trimmers, we recommend shopping one of the electric models on our list instead of this one. Gas-powered hedge trimmers—including the Echo Gas Two-Stroke model—can be quite loud, which may bother you or your neighbors.

“When buying a cordless hedge trimmer, one thing to look for is battery life and power,” says Jeremy Yamaguchi, CEO of Lawn Love. “The battery life will determine how long the trimmer can run on a single charge, and the power will determine how well the trimmer can cut through thick branches.”

Ideally, you should look for a trimmer with a high-capacity lithium-ion battery that can run for at least 30 minutes on a single charge. This will give you enough time to trim and prune your hedge without having to stop and recharge the battery. Also, the power of the trimmer is measured in volts (V); the higher the voltage the more power the trimmer has. A trimmer with at least 20 to 24 volts should be able to handle most trimming tasks around the garden.

Blade Length

Be sure to pay attention to the blade length of the trimmer you’re considering. Longer blades are more efficient but also slightly more unwieldy and can be difficult to use if you’re inexperienced. Check the size of your hedges beforehand so you can select the optimal length for the blade.

Blade Material

“You’ll also want to check the blade material to ensure it’s durable (think stainless steel or high-carbon steel),” Schulz says. “The blade will be operating at high speeds while cutting through the foliage and you don’t want a material that breaks easily.”

Your Questions, Answered

What should I look for when buying a cordless hedge trimmer?

There are a handful of factors you’ll want to keep in mind when shopping for the best cordless hedge trimmer. According to Schulz, when choosing a hedge trimmer, the most important factors include size and hedge type (smaller or less dense hedges won’t need as powerful a trimmer as large and dense ones), and features such as interchangeable batteries, rotating heads, and safety triggers.

You’ll also want to consider how comfortable the handles are since you’ll be holding it for long periods of time, and how easy to use the device is.

What is the best voltage for a cordless hedge trimmer?

“The average voltage for a cordless hedge trimmer is 40 volts, but the ideal voltage is anywhere between 20V and 80V,” Schulz says. “It really depends on how much power you need for your particular landscaping project.”

Dense bushes or thick branches will require a more powerful hedge trimmer than thin brush. Consider the type of hedges you’ll most frequently be manicuring to determine the correct voltage for your hedge trimmer.

Is a gas or electric cordless hedge trimmer better?

Choosing between a gas or electric hedge trimmer will depend on several things—especially your budget and the power you need. “Gas cordless hedge trimmers are more powerful and durable, but they’ll cost more upfront and they’re more difficult to maintain,” Schulz says. “You’ll also need to consistently purchase gas to keep it going. Meanwhile, electric hedge trimmers are still powerful (but less so) and are more affordable.”
