Adjusting the carburetor of a Chinese-made chainsaw

Design and principle of operation

A carburetor is a device in which fuel (gasoline) and air are mixed in predetermined proportions, followed by feeding the prepared mixture into the engine cylinder. Almost all models of chainsaws are equipped with carburetors of the same type, so the device and principle of operation are the same.

The main structural elements of the carburetor are:

  • body, which is cast from aluminum to reduce weight. Chainsaws constantly have to be moved from place to place, during operation they are held by hands, therefore, reducing the weight of the tool is the primary task of manufacturers;
  • a diffuser with an air damper, which are located at the inlet;
  • jets, which are valves for metering fuel;
  • a sprayer that injects gasoline into the chamber (in the diagrams it is designated as the main jet);
  • fuel (float) chamber.

Figure 1. Diagram of a chainsaw carburetor

The principle of operation of the carburetor can be described as a cycle consisting of the following steps:

  • When starting the engine, the choke opens.
  • The piston stroke creates a vacuum in the air channel, as a result of which air enters the diffuser, the amount of which is regulated by the position of the air damper.
  • Gasoline flows from the gas tank to the float (fuel) chamber. The rate of its admission is regulated by jets.
  • In the diffuser, gasoline and air are mixed, resulting in the formation of a fuel-air mixture, which then enters the engine cylinder. The more the mixture enters the combustion chamber of the cylinder, the higher the power and speed on the engine shaft will be.

Important! It should not be assumed that the operation of the carburetor has a cyclical basis, as it might seem from the description. All processes take place constantly and continuously.

How to properly adjust the carburetor with your own hands?

After rinsing and completely cleaning the carburetor, assemble it and begin to adjust. First of all, you should understand the purpose of the adjusting screws. The instruction will help with this, but some general points should be considered right away. The most common designations for screws are:

  • H. adjusts the state of the main jet, i.e. adjusts the maximum speed of rotation of the motor shaft;
  • L. adjusts the idle jets (responsible for the minimum shaft rotation speed);
  • T. regulates the idling of the motor. It can also be designated by the letters LA or S, on some models of carburetors it is not at all.

Turning screws H and L clockwise depletes the air-fuel mixture, and counterclockwise enriches it (the amount of gasoline increases). When the screw T rotates, the idling speed of the shaft changes. it increases clockwise, and decreases in the opposite direction.

Figure 2. Carburetor adjustment mechanisms

Before proceeding with direct actions, you should find and carefully study the information on the position of the adjusting screws (the magnitude of the angles of rotation when adjusting). This information is available in the instructions for the chainsaw. Then you need to prepare the workplace. lay the saw on a flat horizontal plane, directing the chain in the opposite direction from you. Detach all covers, remove foam rubber and air filter. At this, the preparatory operations are considered completed, you can proceed to the main part of the work.

  • Smoothly tighten the screws H and L clockwise until they stop. Be careful not to break the screws. this will cause a complete loss of the carburetor.
  • Unscrew both screws one and a half turn.
  • Run the engine for 10 minutes and warm it up. This is a necessary moment, since it will not be possible to correctly adjust the carburetor on a cold engine.
  • Turning the screws H and L, alternately adjust the rotation of the shaft at maximum and minimum revolutions.
  • By adjusting the position of the screw T (or it may have another designation), the idle speed of the chainsaw is adjusted. It is necessary to achieve smooth and stable engine operation. It is important to monitor whether the chain is idling or not. If it moves, turn the screw a little more counterclockwise.

Important! It is better not to adjust the screw H for an inexperienced person. If it is not set correctly, a lean air-fuel mixture will be supplied to the combustion chamber of the cylinder at maximum speed. This will lead to accelerated wear of the piston group.

You can check the operation of the engine visually and by ear. A mixture that is too rich will cause thick smoke from the exhaust. When the lean mixture is being fed, a whistling sound is heard while the saw is running. Excessive economy mode is harmful. if the L screw is set to “lean” fuel, there will be problems with starting the engine. If the H screw is set to lean, the saw will noticeably lose power. You can determine the correct setting by the following criteria:

  • at idle speed, the engine does not stall, and the chain is stationary;
  • there is no excessive smoke from the exhaust pipe while the engine is running;
  • the engine demonstrates good throttle response (quickly picks up speed when you press the accelerator).

A detailed description of the setting is available in the instructions that come with the instrument in the delivery set. It should be carefully studied, as there may be some features or specific requirements established by the manufacturer and related only to this saw model. If all requirements are met exactly, the performance of the chainsaw will be restored to its original state.

When carburetor adjustment is necessary?

Initially, from the moment the tool was sold, all carburettors were adjusted and tuned at the factory. However, in the process of operation, the settings gradually go astray, and the operating mode changes in accordance with the operating conditions. Signs of a carburetor malfunction may include:

  • too high gasoline consumption, thick smoke comes from the exhaust pipe;
  • engine power is clearly not enough to perform normal tasks;
  • engine speed “float”;
  • after starting, the motor stalls either immediately or after a few seconds;
  • the engine cannot be started at all;
  • the chainsaw “shoots”, there are sharp claps in the engine of the tool.

Note! The reason for poor engine performance may be the worn out piston group, then adjusting the carburetor of the chainsaw does not give a full solution to the problem. Also, no setting will give the expected effect if the node is not cleaned of small particles of debris in parallel. The most problematic elements are jets and filters, both gasoline and air.

It should be noted that during the running-in of a new engine, the carburetor is adjusted to a reduced fuel supply in order to limit the engine power. After the end of the run-in, the fuel supply increases to the nominal value. These adjustments are made using the adjusting screws on the carburetor body (there are usually two or three of them).

How to properly adjust the carburetor on a chainsaw with your own hands?

A chainsaw is a useful, and sometimes just a necessary tool for the owner of a private house. It has a high degree of autonomy, can be used in the field, where there is no possibility of connecting to the power supply network. For some craftsmen, the chainsaw is one of the main devices that perform large amounts of work almost daily. Such loads knock down the factory settings that were set for all important engine components.

The operating mode most often changes with the carburetor, which has to be re-adjusted. Not having an idea of the design and principle of operation of this element, it is impossible to properly adjust it. The question concerns many users who closely operate chainsaws, so it will be useful to consider it more carefully.

Adjustment tools

To tune the carburetor, you will need a Phillips or slotted screwdriver of different lengths or thicknesses; the size depends on the design of the unit and the assembly of the engine. It should be noted that some manufacturers make carburetors designed to use special tools.

In particular, special types of screwdrivers may be required to tune Husqvarna carburettors and other imported tools. It is advisable to clarify this question even when buying a chainsaw, so that you can purchase the necessary additional equipment in advance.

In addition, you will need refined gasoline or acetone to flush and clean the device. They are used to clean the outer surfaces of the carburetor. All internal channels are flushed with kerosene, diesel fuel or white spirit. Before flushing, the carburetor is disassembled, all rubber or plastic parts that may suffer from contact with aggressive chemical compounds are removed.

Open-end or spanner wrenches are used to disassemble the carburetor. The internal channels are flushed in specially designated trays, sometimes plastic syringes are used for this.

How to set up a China-made saw?

The design of the carburetor on Chinese chainsaws is no different in principle. The order and principle of adjustment also do not differ and are performed in the same order. The only difficulty that may arise during the execution of work is determining the purpose of the adjusting screws. Typically the T screw is at the top, while the H and L are at the bottom of the carburetor body. One more, additional screw may be present.

Usually, their purpose is determined empirically, slightly changing the position and monitoring the result. After the purpose of the elements is clearly defined, further customization is not difficult and is performed in the usual manner.

Chainsaw carburetor tuning is an important and necessary procedure that must be performed periodically to restore the normal operation of the tool. This process does not create fundamental complexity, but it requires the user to be careful, attentive and comply with safety rules. The chain of a chainsaw is usually not removed, since you will need to observe its position. Therefore, it is important to constantly remember about the possibility of launching it and exercise the necessary caution.

The adjustment should be done smoothly, with small changes in the position of the screws, so as not to cause too sharp changes in the shaft rotation mode. The result depends on the care and thoroughness of the user, and a properly tuned carburetor will extend the life of the tool.

Chainsaw carburetor adjustment

Most chainsaws have three adjusting screws on the carburetor. In order about each:

Carb Adjustment on The Chinese Chainsaw

  • T. Idling screw. The idle screw is responsible for the position of the throttle valve when the throttle handle is fully released. If the throttle valve is not open enough, the engine will stall when the handle is released, as the valve will cut off the fuel mixture supply. In the event that the throttle valve is opened to a greater value than it should be, then the chain will rotate, which is strictly prohibited by safety precautions when working with a chainsaw.
  • L-screw for adjusting low speed. This screw adjusts the amount of fuel in the fuel mixture when the chainsaw is idling. If the amount of fuel is large, the engine will stall under load, if there is not enough fuel, then the result is engine overheating, seizures, and so on
  • H-High speed adjustment screw. Responsible for the amount of fuel in the mixture when the chainsaw is running. If this adjustment is configured for a larger amount of fuel, then the engine works “unacceptably” and smokes, and if it is less, then we get too high revolutions and overheating.

Symptoms of malfunctions and breakdowns in which carburetor adjustment is required.

The following symptoms and malfunctions indicate the need to adjust the carburetor:

  • the engine starts with an effort and stalls almost instantly;
  • gasoline consumption is too high, the exhaust is too thick, the combustible mixture in the cylinder does not completely burn out;
  • the factory settings of the chainsaw carburetor are knocked down (due to vibrations or unsuccessful attempts to regulate);
  • malfunctions of the air-cleaning system, which led to the ingress of debris particles into the mechanism for distributing the fuel mixture;
  • significant wear of the piston group. setting the carburetor in this case acts as a temporary measure.

It is clear that if dirt gets into the fuel system with one setting, the problem cannot be solved. you need to flush it. If the piston is worn out, a major overhaul is required. However, in all these cases, the carburetor is also tuned.

Situations in which adjustment is necessary

New chainsaws are supplied from the manufacturer with pre-adjusted carburetors. This is called standard adjustment. But for the normal passage of the running process, it is required to lower the maximum engine speed, adjust the carburetor. After running in, the chainsaw needs fine tuning to achieve maximum engine efficiency.

Also, a signal for cleaning and adjusting is an increased fuel consumption, which negatively affects the operation of the exhaust system. Simply put, the chainsaw begins to smoke heavily and the muffler becomes clogged with carbon deposits, which in turn will lead to a decrease in power. With a lack of fuel in the mixture, engine parts are poorly lubricated and premature wear occurs. Also, a poor-quality mixture can cause the engine to jam due to overheating (this is one of the reasons why the chainsaw will not start).

Adjustment is necessary when the engine does not idle, stalls or does not develop full power.

carburetor adjustment must be done with clean air and fuel filters.

Main adjusting screws

There are only three bodies for adjusting the carburetor; these are screws shunted by springs for a flat screwdriver. At the bottom is a pair of screws, on the left is L, on the right is H. Slightly above is the T (or S) screw. So, this is what they are for:

  • Screw L. this is the same valve that regulates the cross-section of the fuel channel when operating at low speeds.
  • Screw H, by analogy with the previous one, is a channel flow regulator for high speed.
  • The T screw is the throttle control. It determines its position when the accelerator lever is fully released.

The design of the first two adjusting screws is extremely simple: at their end there are needles inserted into variable cross-section spools (cones). They all have right-hand threads, so turning the screw clockwise will push the needle deeper and reduce the flow. When rotated counterclockwise, the opposite happens.

Thus, the quality of the mixture is regulated in different modes of operation. If the fuel increases, gasoline does not have time to burn completely and the engine develops less speed. On the other hand, when the mixture is leaner, the speed increases, and at the same time the engine temperature rises. It is worth noting that even when the screws are tightened all the way, the duct of both channels does not completely overlap, unless there is a blockage.

Checking the adjustment made

Measurement of the value of revolutions with a tachometer

After making the settings, turn off the chainsaw, let it cool down. Start the tool. With the correct adjustment, the speed gain from the set idle speed to the maximum speed occurs quickly.

It is necessary to measure the value to make sure: the maximum revolutions given out do not exceed the value indicated in the passport. If an excess is found, return to the screw H and loosen it by half a turn: at an excess of the specified speed, the ignition process may be disrupted.

If the set of revolutions is slowed down, takes up to a minute or more, you need to loosen the screw L by a quarter of a turn.

After the chainsaw has been checked at idle, you can start cutting.

Process description

If the carburetor of the chainsaw is not adjusted and it is not possible to start the chainsaw, then the adjustment begins by setting the screws (L) and (H) to the standard setting. This is 1/5 of a turn of the screws until they are fully tightened. After that, you need to start the engine, let it run a little and warm up. The next step is to set up the low speed mode. Optimum low engine performance can be achieved by adjusting the screw (L) and idle speed (T). To do this, first the screw (L) is tightened until the maximum engine speed is obtained, then it is released by 1/4, and the idle speed is normalized with the screw (T).

After adjusting the work on the “bottom”, the thrust and maximum engine speed are adjusted. To do this, slowly tighten the screw (H) and check the speed according to the readings of the electronic tachometer.

exceeding the maximum engine speed declared by the manufacturer is unacceptable.

An important step is to check the saw in all operating modes after adjusting it, for this you need to let the chainsaw cool down, and then start it according to the cold tool start algorithm. If the saw starts up normally and idles smoothly, you need to check how it cuts. If in the process of checking deficiencies in the power of the chainsaw are found, then it is necessary to repeat the adjustment of the screw (H) by unscrewing it and checking the thrust in operation.

loss of thrust at maximum rpm recommended by the manufacturer is an indicator of CPG wear or poor fuel quality.

Why and how the chainsaw carburetor is adjusted

The gasoline engine works by burning a previously prepared mixture of air, oil and gasoline. Chainsaw carburetor adjustment is needed to prepare the mixture in the right proportion. It depends on the operation of the carburetor whether the engine will work with the declared power or will stall.

How the carburetor is adjusted

The algorithm for setting up the chainsaw is quite simple and consists of the following steps:

  • Adjusting the engine for smooth operation at low rpm.
  • Setting the carburetor for the correct supply of the fuel mixture at maximum speed.
  • Fine adjustment of the carburetor for idling.
  • Chainsaw check in all modes.

Carburetor adjustment must be done after the engine has run a little and heats up.

Now let’s look at how the correct adjustment of the chainsaw carburetor goes in more detail. Almost all carburetor models have three adjusting screws. The screw (T) is responsible for fine tuning in idle mode. Screw (H) setting for maximum speed. The screw (L) controls the mixture formation at low rpm. By tightening the screws (L) and (H), the fuel supply and the mixture becomes leaner, respectively, the speed increases.

The setting of the saw carburetor can be studied in the video below. In this video, the wizard shows how a step-by-step adjustment of a Chinese-made chainsaw is performed without using a tachometer. Carries out after adjustment check in various modes.

Adjusting the carburetor of a chainsaw, although it looks like a fairly simple process, requires a very careful and responsible approach. The article describes the process in sufficient detail, but if you have never adjusted a chainsaw, you should contact a specialist, this will help save time, nerves and money.

GoodLuck manufactures high-quality and inexpensive units. Consumables and spare parts for Goodluck chainsaws are made in China, as are the appliances themselves. This allows you to minimize the cost of products, so they are extremely affordable in terms of price, which is considered the main reason for the demand for them.

Instruments

Correct adjustment of the chainsaw carburetor should be carried out using a special tool. a tachometer. It allows you to most accurately determine the maximum number of engine revolutions and adjust them according to the manufacturer’s requirements. A small slotted screwdriver is required for adjustment. For some models of chainsaws, you will need a special adjusting key, without which work cannot be carried out.

The key for adjusting some models of carburetors is available only in service centers authorized for the repair of chainsaws by the manufacturer. This measure is aimed at reducing breakdowns due to incorrect settings by inexperienced users and those who are engaged in repairs without official permission to do so.

Setting up the chainsaw, if possible, should be carried out in official service centers that have a certificate from the manufacturer.

Adjustment is necessary when the engine does not idle, stalls or does not develop full power.

carburetor adjustment must be done with clean air and fuel filters.

How to distinguish an original from a fake

The GoodLuck chainsaw is characterized by an optimal combination of cost and quality. However, unscrupulous manufacturers are trying to sell counterfeits under the guise of original products. To avoid buying a low-quality unit, you need to understand the following points:

  • The original is equipped with a special instruction in English and different colors.
  • The original brake cover has a triangular shape.
  • Chainsaw 4500 m has a pronounced burgundy color.
  • On the inside of the lid there must be an embossing GL.
  • Individual number located at the bottom.

Adjusting the carburetor of a Chinese chainsaw

Carburetors installed on Chinese-made saws are made similar to European ones and have the same adjustment screws.

The carburetor of a Chinese chainsaw is adjusted according to the algorithm presented above, and differs in that when initially adjusting the screws (L) and (H), they must be turned out two turns. Further, the carburetors of the Chinese saw are adjusted in the same way as the European ones.

Device and equipment

In appearance, the GL4500 chainsaw looks quite presentable. It consists of the following parts:

  • plastic housing;
  • aluminum handle;
  • controls.

In the first days of intensive use, you can see how scratches and other defects form on the case. This is due to the fact that cheap materials are used in the manufacture of units. Therefore, you need to handle the chainsaw as carefully as possible, avoiding the fall of the device. The most common failure due to mechanical stress is a malfunction of the brake lever.

In most cases, there are no other problems when using the saw. It starts with ease, gradually picks up speed and makes it possible to control the supply of lubricant to the chain.

Consumers note that the question of finding spare parts for this chainsaw is solved quite simply. And if you acquire all the necessary tools and skills, then you can do the equipment repair yourself. The GL4500m saw includes the following:

  • the unit itself;
  • bus and chain (headset);
  • toothed hook (convenient when cutting tree trunks);
  • a pair of hex keys, an adjusting screwdriver, a combination wrench;
  • case for easy transportation;
  • a tank for the preparation of a fuel mixture;
  • user’s manual.

Such a completeness makes it possible to start working with a chainsaw immediately after purchasing it. It remains only if necessary to tighten the chain blade and / or remove minor flaws.

Chainsaw carburetor setting

To configure the aforementioned equipment, you don’t even have to dismantle it from the chainsaw. All you need to set up is a Phillips screwdriver.

The carburetor trimming screws are located on the tool body. It is only necessary to select the correct position of the screws to ensure stable operation. In other words, in this case, the fuel mixture will be optimal for specific tasks and weather.

The entire carburetor setting can be divided into the following steps:

  • the fuel supply screw is fully tightened;
  • the fuel quality screw is fully tightened;
  • the idle screw is unscrewed (but not completely. it is not necessary for it to fall out of the bore).
adjusting, carburetor, chinese-made, chainsaw

After the above preparation has been made, you can proceed directly to setting up the carburetor.

The fuel screw must be loosened 1 full turn. It is recommended to unscrew the fuel quality screw one and a half turn.

You can make sure in the future that such an arrangement is considered ideal. Indeed, in fact, we are talking about the factory settings of the chainsaw, which periodically go astray due to the presence of high vibrations during operation.

Adjusting the carburetor of a Chinese-made chainsaw

A chainsaw is a tool that will come in handy in any summer cottage, even for amateurs, not to mention professional workers. But, like any other device, a chainsaw needs constant care and prevention. One of the most common procedures is adjusting the carburetor of a chainsaw due to a past misalignment.

How to adjust/tune a Poulan chainsaw carburator

Saws STIHL & Partner

In STIHL 250, 361 and Partner 351, 350 chainsaws, the carburetor is adjusted using the H and L screws by setting the proportions of gasoline and air. If you release them, a large part of the fuel will be added and therefore the revolutions will be high, otherwise, on the contrary, they will fall.

Idling speed in Partner chainsaws is regulated with a screw with the letter T, and in Calm, as a rule, you need to look for the aircraft marking. The standard setting of the chainsaw is carried out during the final tests. Basically, after such settings, the percentage of fuel in the working mixture is greater than that of air, which does not correspond to the optimal parameters. But they must be saved during the first hours of operation during the running-in of the device. After that, the saw can be adjusted independently, but it will work well at the factory settings.

But if it is decided to regulate independently, then the actions must be performed in the following sequence:

adjusting, carburetor, chinese-made, chainsaw
  • screw adjustment L;
  • then adjust the H jet;
  • after that, go to the idle speed setting using the T screw (if the STIHL chainsaw is LA).

First, screw L must be turned in both directions in order to find the maximum engine speed. If that point is found, then turn the same screw by ¼, thereby slightly slowing down the speed. If at the same time the chain continues to move at idle, it is necessary to immediately turn the screw T (LA) until the chain stops completely.

After setting the maximum speed with screw H, you need to check the frequency with the tachometer. In the event that it does not correspond to those indicated in the service book, the setting must be repeated. When a lot of smoke comes out of the exhaust pipe at maximum speed, then the mixture is too rich in fuel, if noises are heard and the engine is very hot, then on the contrary, it is poor. Then you need to adjust the idle speed. With the correct setting, the engine should sound even at low speeds, while the chain should not move.

Adjusting your Husqvarna chainsaw

During the break-in period of the Husqvarna 142, 240, 236, 137 chainsaw and other similar models, the carburetor settings are set in such a way that the engine speed is 600-700 less than normal working ones. In the event that the operating frequency cannot be adjusted by the tachometer, it is not recommended to knock down the factory settings with the H screw.

The manufacturer expressly prohibits exceeding the working number of revolutions independently. When, after adjusting the carburetor, the chainsaw chain moves at idle, then by turning the screw T counterclockwise, you need to stop it.

In order to adjust the saw accurately, it must be placed on a flat surface with the bar forward. You also need to warm up the engine for at least 12-15 minutes. The highest idle frequency number should be determined first. To do this, screw L must be turned clockwise in the chainsaw, and then in the opposite direction. After determining the desired frequency, the same screw is turned counterclockwise from 12 to 25% of its full turn.

Idle speed in the models of this manufacturer is adjusted using a jet with the letter T. Adjustment is made by turning it clockwise until the chain moves. Then turn lightly counterclockwise until the chain stops moving.

The screw H of the chainsaw is adjusted correctly only when the saw does not make a lot of noise when the gas is pressed all the way, and at the same time it does not become heavier with any load.

In the event that the saw is too noisy during operation and smokes, then this jet must be turned from left to right to adjust.

Idling adjustment

After the two screws (fuel quality, fuel delivery) have been adjusted to the correct position, it is recommended to proceed to the idle setting. To do this, we tighten the idle screw one and a half turns.

Now you should start the chainsaw and carry out further idle adjustments directly with the engine running. By following the given method, you are guaranteed to rebuild the instrument (bring it to perfect functioning).

In the video, the wizard clearly demonstrates how he sets up a Chinese chainsaw:

A chainsaw is a technically complex tool that needs to be serviced from time to time. Cleaning, replacing filters and, of course, adjusting the carburetor of the chainsaw will help to serve its entire life. In this article, we will consider the issue of tuning the carburetor. How and why it is carried out.

Chinese models

Adjusting the carburetor of a Chinese chainsaw, for example, Carver, is carried out in almost the same way as factory models. Here there are the same three main adjusting screws L, H, T. Sometimes such models have the ability to adjust the idle speed. But as a rule, workers of specialized services and owners of such saws argue that it is not always possible to set up a high-quality Chinese chainsaw right away.

For classic Chinese models, screw L should be released 1.5 turns from the maximum value. Screw H must be loosened one turn from the maximum. Idle speed is regulated in the same way.

Thus, self-adjusting the carburetor of a chainsaw is not a very difficult process and can, in most cases, be done by a self-taught person.

Contrary to popular belief, Chinese chainsaws are quite attractive from the point of view of systematic use. If you cannot afford a branded tool (a la STIHL), you can rely on a Chinese manufacturer.

In addition, inexpensive chainsaw parts can always be purchased online. That is, there will be absolutely no problems with the repair kit. The main problem with Chinese chainsaws is that they periodically have to adjust their carburetor to achieve stable and efficient operation. This is not as difficult as it seems at first glance.
