Brush On Angle Grinder For Removing Paint

Also for such purposes it is convenient to use old Soviet metal spatulas. there is a fairly thick blade, it does not bend and, with good sharpening, turns into an excellent scraper. But such a tool can also be made from a modern metal spatula, only for this you have to shorten the blade (this will make it more rigid), leaving only 2-3 cm in length.

But a scraper, even if it is a factory nozzle, is not always suitable for cleaning, and there is a practical confirmation of this. The author of this article had to face a situation where the cement-sand plaster in the bathroom was painted with oil paint.

So, the coating had to be removed with a hatchet, centimeter by centimeter (the paint smeared from the scraper), which took two days when two people were working!

Perforating chisel, shovel and lance

Some people use a nozzle on a perforator to remove paint, but this method is too ineffective and the main reason here is the impact force, due to which the plaster is more destroyed than its coating. And this cannot be avoided, even if you sharpen a chisel or a blade very sharply. they will cut even more deep into the surface of the wall, and not pry off a thin layer of coating.

The only option when this method brings tangible benefits is when the wall is painted with nitro-enamel. there, from the force of the impact, layers small in area simply fly off and after that the surface will only need to be processed in places with a spatula.

No matter what they say or come up with, the most reliable and proven method at the moment is the manual method of removing paint. here you will not miss a single millimeter of the coating, and, moreover, you will do it efficiently. The main problem of cleaning the surface with your own hands is a very low productivity and a huge laboriousness of the process, since the layer is not always removed easily, one can even say that easy dismantling is an exception to the rule.

Very often you have to scrape or knock down the surface literally one centimeter at a time, since the old paint holds very well.

Drill brush

Often, drill bits are used to remove paint, although, exactly the same, only with a different mounting method is put on an angle grinder (angle grinder).

Such a device is made in the form of a rotating brush with metal bristles, and while the wire is new (not bent), the processing is quite effective, but not for any paint. it happens (especially with oil coatings) that the metal bristles are not able to peel off the paint, but only smoothes it over the surface.

For such complex coatings, it is better to select brushes with a shorter nap, then the grout turns out to be tougher, although even such actions do not always provide one hundred percent cleaning.

Cleaning chain

At the moment, many consider the best attachment for automatic cleaning to be a chain on a rod, which is inserted into a drill instead of a drill (the price of such a nozzle is perhaps the lowest). During operation, the drill is held along the plane of the wall and the chains methodically and with high speed beat on the surface, breaking the paint on it.

Advice. After processing the surface with any nozzle in an automatic way, it is best to go through the scraper again, especially if the instructions for installing the cladding require a clean rough base.

What nozzle is needed for removing paint from the walls

Almost all craftsmen will agree that it is much easier to build something new than to repair the old one, since you have to get rid of the old finish, which takes up extra time and effort. So, to prepare the surface for painting, you may need a paint stripper, which can be powered by an angle grinder, drill, hammer drill or simply by hand.

Removing anti-gravel

Anti-gravel coatings are a headache for many bodybuilders, as most abrasives are quickly clogged with particles of this synthetic rubber coating. However, there are still materials on the market that will help to cope with anti-gravel. special scraping discs based on bulk polymer fibers. At Sia they are called siastrip and have a gradation K040. At 3M, these are Clean Strip discs.

The rough structure of these discs ensures trouble-free removal of old anti-gravel coatings, while they are almost not clogged and heat up less. In terms of efficiency and durability, such circles surpass even metal brushes, and their size, shape and elasticity allow you to work in the most inconvenient and hard-to-reach places.

Grinding wheel based on siastrip bulk polymer fibers

The operating speed of siastrip discs should not exceed 6000 rpm. Optimal. 3500. Work is carried out by the end part of the circle.

These circles also have a variety. sia-powerstrip circles. The working material on these discs is applied in a circle, which allows you to work faster and over large areas. Recommended working speed. 6000 rpm.

Various ways to remove old paint

Every owner of a summer cottage may need to remove old paint from metal, wood, brick or concrete. We will tell you how and with what to treat surfaces made of various materials and remove old cracked paint in order to renew the coating or change its color.

Removing old paint by hand from a wooden surface

Before painting any surface, preliminary preparation must be done. It includes removing dirt, cobwebs, insects from the surface, as well as removing paint, sanding (for wood surfaces) and putty.

The most important step is removing the surface coating. Leaving old paint contributes to the appearance of cracks, peeling of the new coating, and a violation of the aesthetic appearance. Let’s take a look at the most common paint stripping methods that you can use on your farm:

  • thermal;
  • chemical;
  • mechanical.

The application of one of the methods depends on the type of paint applied, as well as on the material of the surface to be cleaned.

About rust converters and paint removers

To remove rust and clean old paintwork to metal, Western firms recommend using exclusively mechanical means. grinders, “sandblasting”, brushes.

And none of the leading Western manufacturers of paintwork materials produces and does not recommend the use of converters or rust neutralizers. Of course, this is partly due to the fact that it is generally not customary to repair rotten parts there, but the main argument is that acid residues that are part of such products can provoke corrosion later, after painting. So using a rust converter for processing is tempting (especially if rust is everywhere), but risky.

But there is a wash-off of old paint in the arsenal of some companies. it softens and swells the paint, after which it is removed with a spatula or grinder. However, the use of such washes is also quite dubious. The aggressive chemical composition of these reagents does not allow us to say with confidence that we will be able to completely remove them after use. This means that there are no guarantees that our new coating will not receive completely unwanted defects in this way. chemistry is chemistry. And even if a wash is used, then it needs to be applied only on the entire surface of the part (otherwise, the paint then swells at the borders anyway), which is inappropriate when removing small defects, say, a small dent.

Thus, the most effective method of cleaning paintwork defects to metal today is mechanical processing, that is, grinding. Modern grinding materials and technologies make it possible to do this work without losing time to chemical methods, while completely without risk.

The defects that await us at this stage can be roughly divided into the following types:

How to remove paint from metal using an angle grinder

  • minor defects (scratches, chips, small dents),
  • large damage (parts after straightening, thick layers of old repair coatings, putty masses, primers),
  • hotbeds of corrosion,
  • welds,
  • anti-gravel coating,
  • sticky tapes.

Let’s figure out which tools and materials will be most effective in each case.

Cleaning welded seams

Welding points must be processed in order to:

  • remove the scale, since no paint and varnish material has adhesion to it;
  • minimize further filler work.

Many materials already described today are suitable for cleaning welded seams: siamet and siatop fiber discs, spiraband rollers, siaflap flap discs and siafix discs.

As a rule, the area to be treated is small in this case, so small siafix discs (50 and 75 mm in diameter) will be the most convenient.

Siafix scraper discs and joint treatment with them

When processing welded seams, special attention should be paid to the force applied to the “angle grinder”, because if the metal is burned out, it will again be scaled.

Cleaning minor defects

To remove minor defects on the paintwork, an eccentric rotary vibration machine with an eccentric stroke of 5-8 mm, a rigid plate (for example, 115 mm in diameter) and grinding wheels of gradation P80 and P150 (the former are used in the main zone of the defect, the latter. on the peripheral areas ). Working speed. up to 10,000 rpm.

An example is the Rodcraft 7665 two-handed pneumatic clipper or the electric Festool WTS 150/7, the Sia 7-hole sanding pad and siadrive siafast sanding paper (see table at the end of the article).

Festool professional eccentric sander WTS 150/7 (eccentric stroke 7 mm)

Special circles SCM also effectively cope with the task. over, not only when removing standard layers of enamels with small defects, but also when removing thick layers of paintwork. see the next subsection.

Paint Remover Tips

Old paint usually has to be removed from either walls or metal surfaces. In each case, different types of angle grinder attachments are used.

Overview of grinding and grinding wheels for an angle grinder

Removing paint from walls or metal surfaces, as well as removing rust, takes a lot of effort and time. Therefore, it is sometimes impossible to do without the use of a power tool. An angle grinder (angle grinder) with special grinding attachments can be used as a device to facilitate the process.

From metal surfaces

For roughing work on metal, whether it is removing a layer of old paint or removing rust, craftsmen use brushes. They look like a brush made of twisted or non-twisted metal wire inserted into a metal glass, or a disc made of the same wire.

From the craftsmen who used corbels for roughing work on metal, you can hear complaints that small pieces of wire fly off the nozzle and dig into clothes.

Depending on what kind of roughing work you want to carry out, the thickness and hardness of the brushes are selected. It should be borne in mind that the metal wire used in brushes leaves scratches on the surface to be treated. Therefore, it is better not to use them to remove paint, for example, from a car body. They can only be useful for removing rust and paintwork from hard-to-reach places.

For metal-friendly roughing, it is better to use special discs made of silicone carbide fibers (XCS). they are usually black. Also for these purposes, more wear-resistant Clean and Strip discs are used. They are blue in color, have a similar structure, but are composed of nylon threads.

This grinding wheel is available in 2 versions: for a drill and for an angle grinder. Its distinctive feature from other types of nozzles for removing paint from metal is that it does not clog and does not damage the metal in the form of scratches. They also successfully remove welding spatter, rust, various sealants and anti-corrosion coatings.

Clean and Strip discs have good wear resistance and can be used until completely erased.

Often, flap attachments for an angle grinder are used to remove paint from metal. They represent a disk with sandpaper glued on its plane in the form of petals.

For rough surface treatment, nozzles with a large grain size are used. For finishing work, it is necessary to select a grinding wheel with fine sandpaper. Although this sanding disc will wear out quickly and become clogged with remnants of stripped paint, it can be easily repaired. How this is done can be understood from this video.

From the walls

First of all, in order to remove paint from the wall, craftsmen try to use brushes with thick twisted wire (discussed above). This method is quite effective, but a lot of dust is generated during roughing work. Therefore, it is necessary to use protective equipment (goggles, respirator). It is also recommended to use a vacuum cleaner with a special attachment that completely hides the brush.

In addition to removing paint from walls, you can remove a layer of old plaster, primer or putty with an angle grinder.

Bowl nozzles are also used to remove paint from concrete walls. the angle grinder must be held at such an angle that the paint layer is removed, but the tool does not deepen into the wall.

In addition to roughing work, this nozzle is also used for leveling surfaces, removing various sagging on the wall, for removing plaster, putty, etc.

Sharpening discs

This category of discs is designed for rough metal work. The sharpening disc can be used for cleaning welded seams, chamfering cut metal parts, and for sharpening tools (drills, chisels, etc.) if there is no grinding machine nearby.

It is worth knowing that when installing such a disc, the revolutions on an angle grinder must be set to the minimum or not exceed the values indicated on the abrasive wheel.

As a rule, grinding wheels are more often used on small angle grinders, as they are more convenient to use for cleaning metal.

The grinding wheel can be distinguished from the cut-off wheel in thickness (at least 5 mm) and by the presence of a recess in the center for more convenient use of the plane of the disc for sharpening the tool.

A hot air gun as a paint cleaner

So, the first thing that was tried in this direction was a technical hairdryer. I have an inexpensive MAKITA hair dryer, model HG5012K 230V. Industrial hair dryers differ mainly in the level of heating.

Technical hair dryer MAKITA

This is what a technical hair dryer looks like. very similar to the usual one with which to dry the hair, however do not do this

This cleaning method proved to be very time consuming and laborious. In addition, you cannot remove the old putty with a hairdryer. If you need to remove paint from an entire wall, for example, 4 squares, then this operation with the help of a technical hair dryer becomes really difficult. After several attempts, I abandoned this venture and realized that it is possible to use a technical hair dryer to remove paint only in small volumes on areas within a few square centimeters. I tried various attachments. it did not bring tangible results.

Using a drill or punch to remove paint from walls.

If you have a powerful drill, you can try the paint removers designed for the drill.

Drill bit

Drill attachment for attaching sheets of abrasive material. Fixation is due to the Velcro. To be honest, this is complete nonsense and in fact such a nozzle turns out to be useless. Never buy one.

You can try this brush. The removal process turns out to be quite effective and of high quality. The surface can be cleaned well, but don’t think that you can clean even a quarter of a square meter in an hour with such a brush. Suitable for those who have a lot of time.

Hammer drill owners are more fortunate than their neighbors. Thanks to a specially designed spatula nozzle, you can quite successfully beat off a layer of old paint along with a layer of putty and plaster and concrete :). A square meter per hour is quite real. I think the neighbors hated me because I hammered for 2 hours on Saturday.

The attachments were immediately purchased after purchasing the hammer drill. Such pribluds are inexpensive, 100-200 rubles for each.

Nozzle for removing paint and top coat of putty and plaster

I tortured my neighbors with this attachment and tested their patience, but no one seemed to come running to complain. Everyone reacted with understanding.

I note that the wall after using the punch becomes very impartial, but it completely removes the paint, and then you can plaster it again and putty.

On the wall, grooves were previously made for sockets and switches. As a result, the wall generally turned into a terrible concrete mess. In one of the next posts I will show you how I plastered it.

Brush for angle grinder for removing paint

Every master at least once in his life faced the problem of removing old paint or rust from any metal surface. For example, your batteries are a little corroded and you decide to renew them, that is, paint them again. Of course, you can immediately replace them, but it will not be cheap, it is much easier to “shaman” them a little, as a result they will look like new. So, how can you strip old paint or rust from metal?

The first method is the cheapest, but rather laborious.

There are hand-held wire brushes on sale, they are quite inexpensive, about 30-50 rubles. Here is a photo for you.

The method of application is to manually “scrub” problem areas, such a brush cleans off old paint quite well, rust is also removed. After processing with such a brush, it remains only to walk a little with sandpaper and the metal surface will be ready for painting. Brushes are different, with a wooden handle (cheaper) and a plastic one (more expensive). Wooden ones differ in the number of rows. 4, 5 and 6-row. They are rougher than a plastic handle.

If you absolutely do not want to remove old paint or rust by hand, you can use a power tool. it can be either an electric drill or an angle grinder (angle grinder). For this, there are so-called brushes on sale. special wire brushes for an angle grinder or drill. There are 2 types of brushes. disc and cup.

They also differ in diameter. after all, there are large brushes for large angle grinders with a disc diameter of 230 mm. But of course, brushes for small angle grinders are most often used. 115 mm or 125 mm.

The types of such nozzles are also decent, there are hard and softer ones, so you can choose for various types of work. For example, a twisted brush for an angle grinder (0.5 mm thick, steel wire). very powerful, with a thick wire, designed for rough metal processing, where it does not matter that the brush will severely scratch the metal surface.

For gentle removal of old paint, it is better to use brushes with brass-plated wire (0.3 mm thick). it is soft, thinner, which means that the surface treatment will be gentle, since it does not scratch much.

Drill brushes come with a pin. for mounting in a drill chuck. Angle grinder braces. can be threaded (M14) or attached with an angle grinder washer. The larger the brush is in diameter, the more expensive it costs, so if the volume of work is small, then the usual one is quite enough for 115-125 mm.

Most importantly, such a tool is designed to remove old paint from metal, but not from wood. If you need to peel off old paint from wood, use sandpaper petal circles. And of course sandpaper is a universal tool for this type of work.

Removing paint from walls or metal surfaces, as well as removing rust, takes a lot of effort and time. Therefore, it is sometimes impossible to do without the use of a power tool. An angle grinder (angle grinder) with special grinding attachments can be used as a device to facilitate the process.

angle grinder or angle grinder as a paint cleaning tool

Those who have an angle grinder, or as it is called an angle grinder, can try to remove the paint using various attachments and grinding the required surface.

Paint cleaning nozzle

Here is a brush cut from hard steel wires. At 10 thousand revolutions, it begins to spark and scatter fragments of hot metal.

When using such a nozzle, everything flies to the sides. Do not try to take too large. you will break the angle grinder. If you have already decided, then it is better to take a nozzle with a small diameter. So you will protect yourself and the angle grinder will not get out of your hands. As a result, the nozzle was not effective for me, or I do not know how to use this brush.

Grinding wheel

A special grinding wheel equipped with 80 sandpaper. When used, it heats up to the point of fire, but removes the paint soundly.

The only thing: when buying such a circle, pay attention to the graininess of the skin. I do not advise taking less than 40, it will wear off quickly, but clean slowly. Personally, I have not found such circles with a grain of P40, so I tried it with what I have. Another negative point is a lot of dust. Prepare a respirator and goggles.

Abrasive attachment for angle grinder

Another type of abrasive. The nozzle has a rough surface, on which round-shaped emery sheets are attached with Velcro.

Sheets are erased quickly, and after one, as you can see, the nozzle is erased. You will not notice in time that the circle has worn off, the nozzle itself goes into battle; It is unlikely that it will be possible to quickly grind the paint with such a device. If you buy abrasive sheets for it or just sandpaper, then buy the maximum thickness.

Application example angle grinder with sanding attachment

The wall was sanded, but it turned out to be difficult to remove the paint with such a thing. In some places it can be seen that the abrasive has passed to the concrete.

And this is my combat angle grinder, the Metabo angle grinder. very helpful when cutting strobes in walls for wiring, cutting metal and in general in life.

Paint Remover Tips

Old paint usually has to be removed from either walls or metal surfaces. In each case, different types of angle grinder attachments are used.

Using a hand scraper to clean the paint

Another available option is to use a hand scraper, but it is not always possible to scrape off old, no-nonsense fifty year old paint with oil putty. Some of the paint, a very small area, was scraped off with a scraper. After a couple of hours of tinkering, it became clear that this is also not an effective method of removing old paint. A scraper can effectively remove lime and even putty, but cleaning the hardened Soviet paint becomes just torture.

Scrapers

A green scraper with replaceable blades sucks. The one with the wooden handle was much better. With this scraper, the ceiling in one of the rooms was cleaned of putty, but not the paint.
