Epoxy resin products

Original, exclusive products and decor always favorably distinguish the interior of the house. Interesting household items, such as watches, paintings or mini-sculptures, designed according to individual sketches, win the attention of guests; and unusual jewelry and jewelry not only attract attention, but can also be a great gift. Epoxy resin is a popular material for creating unique decorative items, affordable and easy to work with. In this article, we propose to consider the merits of the material, learn about the features of working with epoxy resin and find out what decorative products can be made from it.

Epoxy resin is a synthetic product made by combining oligomer molecules containing epoxy groups and hardeners. The molecules combine to form crosslinked polymers. The practical use of epoxy resin is impossible without combining the substance with the hardener, because the resin hardens only after the polymerization process by a chemical reaction with the hardener. Hardeners can be, for example, polyamines or anhydrides; weak acids are sometimes used. After the epoxy resin is combined with a hardener, the material turns into a solid, insoluble and infusible state.

Properties and features of epoxy resin:

Epoxy resin is resistant to some oxidants and alkalis, as well as high adhesion to metals. The material practically does not shrink when solidified. In a liquid state of aggregation, the resin is toxic to humans, therefore, when working with it, you must use personal protective equipment.

Mainly on the market there is a colorless epoxy resin. But the color of the material can vary from yellowish orange to brownish brown.

Advantages of epoxy as a polymer material

  • UV resistant epoxy resin: finished products do not change their color in the sun.
  • The resin is not exposed to humid environments, has waterproofing properties. The material is practically waterproof. Therefore, epoxy resin products can be used in bathrooms, pools or fountains.
  • In the hardened state, the resin does not pose a danger to humans, since it does not emit any harmful or toxic substances.
  • Epoxy resin products have a high level of strength and impact resistance. There is an opinion that epoxy resin is not inferior in strength even to concrete.
  • The material is not subject to abrasive wear: products made of epoxy resin practically do not wear out and do not wear out.
  • Epoxy resin is an excellent dielectric.
  • Epoxy products are usually lightweight. the material has a relatively low weight.
  • Without the addition of a hardener, epoxy resin can be in a liquid state for a long time; it does not harden in air.
  • The fluidity of the material before solidification allows you to create products of any shape and size.
  • Epoxy resin interacts well with dyes and pigments. The initially transparent material can be given any color or subtle shades by mixing several coloring powders. At the same time, finished products can remain transparent. Thanks to this property, crafted jewelry can imitate crystals and colored stones.

Here are some examples of interior decoration items that can be easily made from epoxy resin. Unusual home decorations such as clocks, decorative trays, paintings and candlesticks can be a memorable gift or highlight the wearer’s sophisticated sense of style.

Crockery and kitchen decor. Epoxy resin can be used to make delicate coasters, hot coasters, trays, and kitchen boards. Products can be completely made of polymer material, or they can consist of epoxy resin in combination with other materials (for example, wood).

Finished epoxy resin products do not emit harmful substances even when heated; the material can withstand high temperatures. Cup holders and epoxy hot coasters are an original solution for the kitchen interior. They can be decorated with dried flowers, fancy patterns, imitate a cut of a tree, or you can leave them completely transparent; there are many possible design options.

Planks and serving trays are also decorated with epoxy resin. Such kitchen utensils can be washed in any way: in the dishwasher or by hand. just like ordinary dishes. The only thing, experts do not advise cutting food with a knife on an epoxy cutting board, because sharp objects, although they will not significantly damage the product, will leave scratches on the surface. But even this aspect can be excluded if one side of the cutting board is left wooden or plastic and cut on it, and the other side is filled with epoxy and painted.

Clocks and pictures. This epoxy wall clock will become a bright accent in the interior of an office, living room, bedroom or study. Today, the most popular design option is a combination of textures: for example, wood and glass. Transparent epoxy resin is capable of imitating glass so well that it will be impossible to visually detect differences.

Resin can be used to fill photographs and finished paintings, painted with oils or acrylics. Even paintings created with spray paints do not deform under the influence of polymer material. The technique of creating 3D images is also interesting and easily feasible: on top of the hardened transparent layer of epoxy resin, you can apply a drawing with paints, then pour the resin layer again and harden it. You can repeat these steps an unlimited number of times. This method will give the painting depth and volume.

Jewelry and jewelry. Creation of original jewelry and bijouterie is a whole area of work with epoxy resin. Exquisite earrings, pendants, bracelets and rings, brooches can be created from the material. As a rule, for the manufacture of jewelry, special molds are used for pouring. molds.

In molds, dry flower buds, plant leaves, shells and any other volumetric elements can be poured with epoxy resin. It is important to remember that organic materials must be well dried, otherwise the moisture remaining in the flower will eventually cause the plant to darken right inside the product. You can also mix glitter, gold leaf, small rhinestones, and, of course, any pigments and paints into the resin composition. It all depends only on the flight of imagination and creative idea.

Making jewelry without molds is also easy to implement. Simply pour a small amount of resin onto the prepared surface and cure it. You can let the material flow at random, or you can wait for complete hardening and then process the edges of the product. This method can be used to obtain pendants or earrings, buttons, brooches. After the product has solidified, it remains only to attach metal fittings to it. and the decoration is ready!

How to cut beef along the grain or across. Correct cutting of meat

Correct cutting of meat. Every good cook knows how to properly cut and cut fresh meat. The meat of any animal is an excellent, nutritious product, rich in useful acids and unique animal proteins. To make your dishes tasty for each cooking method, you must cut the meat correctly.

Popular materials

How to properly cut meat along or across the grain into chops. General rules

How to properly cut meat along or across the fibers into chops. General rules

For cooking on a fire, you can take fresh, chilled or frozen meat. The product from the freezer is first defrosted, and then treated as with fresh meat: it is thoroughly washed under running water and dried with a paper towel.

Cutting the meat for shashlik is done on a large board so that the whole poultry or piece of pork fits. The procedure will be more comfortable and accurate if you take a special board, which has a groove around the perimeter for draining meat juice. The table will stay clean and dry without having to wash it.

To cut portioned pieces and cut poultry carcasses, you must use a knife at least 20 cm long. The blade should be wide, very sharp, smooth, without roughness and chipping. Then you can cut off large strips in one motion, divide the piece into parts. You will also need a fork with two prongs. it is convenient to hold the product with it.

There are rules on how to hold the knife while slicing, so that the process is easy, and the pieces are the right kind:

  • The boneless product is cut from the thick part of the piece, the knife is positioned horizontally at an angle of 90 °. During cutting, the knife does not pull very much towards itself, so that the pulp does not have torn edges, otherwise they will immediately burn.
  • If the product is with bone, you need to position it so that the bone lies on the board. With leisurely movements, the meat is cut from the top of the piece down to the bone diagonally. In this case, the knife blade is tilted at an angle of 45 °.
  • The meat is cut along and across the fibers. Slicing lengthwise is needed to remove large layers of pulp to form a roll or prepare a stuffed dish. Some people doubt how to cut a kebab, it is along the length that beautiful pieces are obtained. This is not a problem for young pork and chicken, but it is recommended to cut the beef only across. The cut fibers lose their firmness and the food becomes soft.

But if someone does not know how to cut correctly, we will help you navigate with the basic rules.

First, meat is only cut when it thaws, not frozen. After defrosting, or if the meat was just chilled, it should lie in the air for 15-20 minutes. During this time, the juices will be evenly distributed over the meat tissues, the fibers will soften.

Second: you can only cut meat correctly with a sharp long knife. No curly blades or old serrated knives. The best cutting board is made from natural wood.

Third: it is almost always necessary to cut meat across the fibers, only in rare exceptions. along. It is believed that if you cut the meat across the fibers, juiciness is lost. But if it is thermally processed correctly, then all the juices remain, and the meat turns out to be very tender, even as tough as beef.

There are two fundamentally different methods in slicing, which depend on the product: how to cut boneless meat and how to cut meat into bones.

In the first case: you put a piece so that it is convenient to cut along the fibers, you orient the knife strictly horizontally at a right angle. You start cutting from a thick piece, maintaining a uniform thickness along the entire strip. You do not press too hard on the knife and at the same time pull on yourself, gradually cutting through, not breaking through the product.

You need to cut meat into bones a little differently. The knife is directed at an angle of 45 degrees, and the pulp is cut from a piece diagonally from the top to the bone itself, which should lie on the cutting board (otherwise the piece of meat will slide, you will not be able to cut uniform pieces, and it will be very easy to injure yourself with a sharp knife ).

How to cut meat on a shish kebab up or down. How to cut meat for shish kebab

Any shish kebab begins with cutting meat. And in order for the finished dish to be soft and juicy, you need to do it right.

First you need to thoroughly rinse the meat under the tap in the kitchen. For cutting, it is better to use a special wooden plank with a groove through which the meat juice will subsequently drain. To prevent the wood from absorbing this juice, rinse the board with cold water before cutting.

Pork, lamb or veal meat should be cut in medium pieces, the size of which can be determined by placing the piece completely in the palm of your hand.

If the piece is too large, it will not fit in the palm of your hand. over, large pieces will not bake well, and too small pieces will be dry.

On average, all pieces should be the same size, about 4 by 4 centimeters, maximum 5 cm. Each piece weighs from 30 to 40 grams, no more. In the Caucasus, meat is cut more finely. 3 cm.

How to cut meat for a shish kebab photo

If you took not a tenderloin for cooking a shish kebab, but another piece of meat with bones, then first remove all the bones, and only then cut into portions.

Pork neck shashlik is also popular. Rinse the neck gently, cutting it into pieces 3-4 cm long and 3-4 cm thick.

After you have cut the meat, beat it off a little and chop it on a skewer.

How to cut meat for shish kebab up or down? So that it pleases you with its taste and softness, the meat is correctly cut only across the fibers. Pieces cut along the fibers will shrink during frying, and then also get stuck between the teeth.

The blade of the knife should be smooth, without any chipping, and the knife itself should be sharp, using its tip when cutting.

If you cannot determine how the fibers are going, first freeze the meat a little in the freezer, then take a piece of meat and carefully examine it. the fibers look like whitish threads, across them and need to be cut.

Do not forget to remove the white streaks, crust or skin, these are waste that will definitely spoil the taste of the kebab.

When skewering the meat, make sure that it does not fall off of it.

Chicken is often bought already cut. separately legs, wings, white meat. If you are making kebabs from white meat, they should be cut into square pieces about 4 by 4 centimeters in size.

Now you know how to properly cut meat for a shish kebab, do it this way and only this way, and your shish kebab will always be juicy, tender and incredibly tasty.

The chicken fillet should be rinsed and cut into chop pieces. The meat should be cut strictly across the grain. The thickness of each piece should be 1.5-2 cm.

Portion pieces should be placed on a cutting board, covered with cling film or a plastic bag and slightly beaten off with a special hammer. You cannot be zealous during this procedure, since there is a possibility of rupture of delicate fibers. After that, remove the film and turn the pieces over. Cover them again and slightly beat them off the other side.

Grate the resulting chicken chops with chicken spices. You can use ready-made mixtures, or you can pick up your favorite herbs yourself. The article “Seasoning for chicken” will help you decide on the choice for chicken chops in a pan.

After the chicken chops are marinated for at least half an hour in mayonnaise with chopped garlic, mustard, tomato garlic paste or in another marinade suitable for chicken meat.

Pickled pieces of chicken fillet are placed in batter, fried in hot vegetable oil in a skillet until tender.

How to cut correctly on a cutting board

Each of us has seen in reality or in movies how professional chefs work. How quickly and smoothly they chop vegetables is a truly mesmerizing sight. Someone knows how to cut in the same way, but someone would like to learn. Today we will reveal a few simple secrets of how to properly chop food on a cutting board to feel like a real chef.

How to hold a knife correctly?

You will need to master the correct grip of the knife with your fingers:

  • Hold the instrument as if shaking hands with it. This is important: the index finger should not wrap around the grip from below. Place it near the top and side of the blade. An exception is chopping small foods like garlic. For convenience, you will have to place your index finger under the grip.
  • When slicing, move forward and down simultaneously, keeping the tip of the knife on the cutting board at all times.

Secret 1: Board

In the question of how to quickly and evenly cut food, the board plays an important role. A professional will not use an uncomfortable board that slides over the surface, and it is also unsafe. Glass makes an unpleasant sound when it comes into contact with a knife, and it is very inconvenient to cut on it.

The best option is a sturdy and sturdy wood plank such as Epicurean, which is used in professional kitchens of the highest standard. Choose the model that fits your size, place it comfortably on the table and get to work.

Secret 3: Correct Technique

A professional chef always works while standing! It is impossible to chop the product with high quality and quickly in a sitting position: this reduces the amplitude of hand movement, narrows the view, and the joints and muscles carry additional stress.

The product is cut without leaving the board. In this case, the product moves along the board, not the knife! It works strictly vertically and is in the same position.

Secret 2: Knife

Make sure the knife is sharp enough before cutting anything on the cutting board.

The loaf slicer is not suitable for meat; the embossed blade will only interfere with shredding. You can do without expensive knives, any well-sharpened one with a comfortable handle will do. Ideal: a sharp knife with a blade of sufficient width and a heel protrusion under the handle. Pay attention to the sharpness of the tip. it is often overlooked when sharpening.

How to hold the cut product correctly?

You do not need to hold the product with your fingertips. there is a great danger of cutting yourself. The fingers need to be bent so that the knuckles protrude in front, and the front phalanges are under their protection. The product is held by the bones of all fingers at once. The hand should be tilted slightly forward so that the top of the blade lightly touches the fingers.

This is the technique that chefs use. It may seem uncomfortable at first, but any skill requires practicing. Practice chopping pliable foods such as cucumbers, onions, before moving on to harder and more complex foods.

Professional cutting of food is fast, beautiful and right! We wish you to successfully master this method and effectively apply it in your own kitchen.

How to make a tray or kitchen board out of epoxy and wood

As a wood, the author chose a piece of board of an interesting shape. The board was already a little rotten, but this is not a problem, because it is embedded in epoxy, which is very strong in itself. It is important here that the remains of the tree do not get into the resin. Well, after pouring, you will need to grind the product well and polish it. So, let’s take a closer look at how to make such a homemade product!

Materials and tools used by the author:

List of materials:
– epoxy resin for pouring;
– a suitable dye;
– wood for pouring;
– boards, adhesive tape, self-tapping screws (to make the formwork);
– plywood for making a template.

Tool list:
– cutting tool;
– grinder (orbital or belt);
– drill;
– ruler and other drawing accessories.

The process of making homemade products:

Step one. Cut out the template
If you need to make a product with a precisely defined shape, it is best to make a template first. The author cut it out of plywood using a tape cutter.

Step four. We dilute the epoxy and fill it
Cooking epoxy. To calculate the correct proportions with the witness, we use an accurate digital scale. Mix everything well with a drill to get a homogeneous mass. Next, we select the temperature of the epoxy, depending on the goals. To increase fluidity, we need to heat the resin. And to make it thicker, on the contrary, we cool the resin. We also add dye to the epoxy of the desired color and stir well.

Pour the resin into the formwork and then lay the tree down. You can do it differently, having previously secured the wood. We leave the whole thing to dry, such a volume can dry for a week, or even more.

Material features

Epoxy resins are synthetic compounds of oligomers. This material is not used in its “pure” form. Its properties appear only after contact with the hardener.

Using resin, you can turn an ordinary wooden product into a real piece of art.

After that, the product can be used for its intended purpose.

The scope of application of the epoxy resin depends on its modification. The list and features of the latter are given in the table.

Modification type Characteristics
Chemical To obtain it, various chemicals are added to the resins that come into contact with them (polyether alcohols and others). These components change the characteristics of the main ingredient.
Physical The modification is obtained by adding a substance to the resins that does not enter into a bond with them.

An epoxy resin table is made by applying a synthetic material to a wooden base. The result is a product that is highly resistant to chemicals.

In the process of creating a structure, it is important to prepare a wooden surface by removing dirt from it.

In the future, the surface of the countertop will be covered with air bubbles.

To make a table from epoxy resin, it is necessary to mix synthetic material and hardener in addition to preparing the wooden base. The characteristics of the composition depend on the ratio of both components. Excessive or insufficient hardener will reduce:

  • product strength;
  • resistance to chemicals and water.

When choosing an epoxy resin table, pay attention to the presence of bubbles.

In this case, the excess hardener is released from the resin. In most cases, in the process of manufacturing various products using this material, a ratio of the initial components of 1: 1 or 1: 2 is used.

Among the disadvantages of epoxy resin tables, one should highlight their higher cost.

At the end of the preparatory stage, an epoxy compound (resin and hardener) is mixed, to which paints and other components are added, if desired.

The article would need to be corrected. The message seems to be clear, but the understanding of the essence of the resin, the advantages, for example, universal properties, are completely absent. What about chemistry, not correct wording: Where did polyether alcohols come from? Curing occurs mainly according to the amine type, it is used in these, it is the curing process that proceeds in T at 10-35C. Such a (cold) curing process is often practiced in small-scale production in terms of souvenir, gift products, advertising business, interior decoration, manufacturing of large plastic parts for the decoration of passenger transport. How to Make Epoxy Cutting Boards, (Out of Scraps!)

Pros and cons of balcony tiles

The idea of using ceramic flooring is attracted by the immense durability and reliability of the tiles. Even if the floor on the balcony is regularly flooded with rainwater, snow and ice fall, nothing special will happen. The tile can easily withstand any rubbish and unnecessary things that many residents of high-rise high-rise buildings like to put on loggias-balconies so much.

In addition, a beautiful ceramic floor is also an excuse to tidy up the room, put the finishing on the ceiling and walls and turn it into a full-fledged outdoor recreation area.

There are, of course, negative aspects. First, the cladding creates additional stress on the concrete slab. Secondly, even terracotta tiles are too cold and the floor may need to be insulated. Thirdly, with an incorrectly selected coating model, it will be much more difficult to redo or knock it down.

We glue the tile material on the floor on the balcony

We begin to lay the tiles from the back row, under the very fence. The top point, as a rule, is under the wall of the house, so we put the first tile on the floor in the corner opposite, photo.

Since the floor was not leveled, the glue layer is quite large

For installation, you will need to apply a sufficiently large amount of glue, the layer thickness is about 15 mm. We leave a small gap, 4-5 mm, and lay the tiles in place, after which we level them using a building level or a laser in two mutually perpendicular directions along the horizon.

Next, you will need to lay the entire row under the balcony fence to the end. When laying tiles, do not forget to install seam crosses. At this, work is stopped for at least two to three days, until the glue sets completely. We lay out the second and third row in a similar way on the concrete floor of the balcony with a snake or parallel stripes.

After the final hardening of the masonry mortar, remove the plastic inserts, clean the seams from glue residues, blow through and prime the surface. For grouting, you can use the same adhesive, but with a small addition of plasticizer to improve the elasticity of the material. The grout is applied with a regular sponge for glazed tiles, for porcelain stoneware or clinker, the joints can be rubbed with a rubber trowel. After the composition has dried, the floor is wiped dry and washed with clean water.

How to lay tiles on the balcony with your own hands

There are two main ways to install tiled flooring:

  • Directly on a concrete floor;
  • Backed or repaired plank floor.

The first option is considered the fastest, most durable and least laborious to work with. The only inconvenience is that you have to put up with the uneven surface of the concrete slab.

The second option is simpler, but more time consuming. Tiling the balcony will require laying a plywood or plasterboard base, which leads to an increase in the height of the floor level and additional financial costs.

Do-it-yourself tile installation on the balcony: how to put it, photo

It is no secret that the premises of the loggia and the balcony are operated in the most difficult conditions, therefore the floor in such “apartments” collapses and is pressed through much faster than in any other rooms of the apartment. Of all the existing options for arranging flooring, most often the owners think about not inventing anything new and just putting the tiles on the floor on the balcony, and even with their own hands if possible. The task looks quite simple, but in some cases it is absolutely not worth doing this.

Label markings

The process of gluing tile material to concrete begins with measuring the floor surface. You can use a laser level or pull on several paint cords aligned to the horizon. Find the highest point on the surface of the concrete floor. It is from her or almost from her that you will need to start laying tiles or porcelain stoneware.

The highest point of the surface is usually located under the wall at the balcony door

After the highest point has been found, we rearrange the laser beam or cords from it 17-20 mm higher. To reliably glue ceramic tiles at the highest point of the concrete floor, you will need at least 5-8 mm of tile adhesive plus 10-12 mm of the thickness of the ceramic itself, and this is the desired value of 17-20 mm.

What tools and materials will be required

In advance, before starting the process of installing tiles on the balcony, you will need to first stock up on the most important tools, check them in practice, practice and test them in work:

  • A laser level, as a last resort, a set of construction bubble levels is suitable: a long one and a half meter and a short half meter. It is rather difficult to work with a laser without experience, and given the very cramped conditions and small size of the room, a modern device will allow you to lay tiles on the balcony quickly enough and with minimal errors;
  • angle grinder or table cutter. You will have to cut tiles or porcelain stoneware right here, in the room of the balcony, so you need to do this quickly and as accurately as possible, but manually adjusting the material is simply unrealistic.

In addition, you will need at least a set of mounting crosses, a container for glue, and a rubber hammer. If the process involves laying tiles on the balcony with a lining layer, then you will additionally need a jigsaw, wooden slats, a joiner’s square.

The main problem of the floor is an uneven surface with numerous slopes, so there is nothing to do without a level on the balcony

In addition to the ceramic tiles themselves, the floor on the balcony will need to be prepared:

  • Primer;
  • Film waterproofing;
  • Polyurethane foam;
  • Tile adhesive;
  • Grout, better for epoxy or polyester acrylic backing.

It is clear that the specific set of materials depends on which base, concrete or wood, it is planned to lay the tiles on the balcony. Nevertheless, the basic operation, namely sticking to the base, will need to be mastered in advance, since it will be extremely difficult to redo and correct errors.

To make the tile floor on the balcony as durable as possible, you need to choose the right tile adhesive. It is best to use a frost-resistant one, even if you put the cladding on the floor in a heated balcony or in a heated loggia room. It is clear that you will have to carefully monitor the grouting. If moisture gets into the voids under the tiles, then over time, the flooring will peel off.

Wooden floors on new balconies are rare, more and more laminate or decking. But if it becomes necessary to lay the material on a wooden base, you need to be sure that the floor will not shrink and it will not swell due to accumulated moisture.

How to make an epoxy cutting board

To make a cutting board using epoxy, you can take any piece of wood as a base. Even with a slight rottenness, such wood can be safely used. Epoxy will smooth out all flaws and give the material good strength.

Advice. In order for the cutting boards made of epoxy resin and wood to have a beautiful and attractive appearance, during work, try to prevent the smallest pieces of wood (shavings) from getting into the epoxy composition, otherwise the finished product will look unattractive.

Procurement of materials

For work, you will need the epoxy itself itself. Remember to dilute it with hardener. Purchase coloring pigments in advance to create an unusual design. You will also need a suitable piece of wood and plywood. a template for a future cutting board is made from it. For work, you will need self-tapping screws for the manufacture of formwork and adhesive tape.

Epoxy and Wood Cutting Boards

Epoxy resin works well with wood. With a skillful approach and use of such materials, you can create unique beauty and exclusive things. For example, coasters and countertops are very good. Cutting board with epoxy resin is also very popular. Making such a kitchen accessory is quite simple, you just need to know some of the nuances.

To get original and flawless cutting or serving boards with epoxy resin, you should read the instructions and follow them. The entire workflow is divided into several stages:

  • Making a template. First, a plywood board template is created. When working, you can use a cutting band or jigsaw.
  • Formwork. That is, the designated place where the epoxy will be poured. Formwork is made in the form of a box of a given shape. When working, self-tapping screws and pieces of plywood are used. The finished box must be secured with tape. Remember that resin is fluid, so make the box completely sealed.
  • Preparation of the tree. For filling, wooden scraps of an unusual and non-standard shape are used to make the final product original. The pre-selected pieces are carefully sanded. make sure there is no dust. Additionally, they can be sanded.
  • Epoxy preparation. According to the instructions, an epoxy base is prepared (in the classic version, 10 parts of resin are added to 1 part of the hardener). To increase the fluidity of the material, the mixture is heated. The selected dye is added at the same time. The whole mass is thoroughly mixed.
  • Fill. The resin is carefully poured into the mold. Prepared wooden pieces are immediately placed in it. The filled form is left to dry. It will take about 7-10 days to completely dry the product.
  • Grinding. After our future cutting board has frozen, it is removed from the mold. Additional processing is required: remove all unnecessary elements, and then sand the material. The product should be sanded, starting along the contour, and then gradually moving to the central part and the plane. Use a sander (belt or orbital) for sanding.
  • Polishing. After grinding, the finished product must also be polished. First, a protective coating is applied to its surface (it is better to take a mixture based on polyurethane). Then the item is polished.

Epoxy resin is harmless

After all the work, we got a beautiful glossy surface. And the product itself has acquired a unique and inimitable look. The cutting board is ready. If you wish, you can make other boards with different effects and colors for yourself and for a gift.

Epoxy resin is a unique material. With its help, you can create various unusual products. One has only to connect imagination and strictly follow the instructions. And the use of various dyes will help create unique and inimitable beauty design options for cutting boards.

How many cutting boards do you need in the kitchen

When equipping our workplace in the kitchen, choosing dishes and other kitchen utensils, each of us probably thought about how many cutting boards should be in the kitchen. We know that a cutting board is not just a cooking tool, but its battery of dangerous bacteria. Without even delving into the study of the issue, we try not to cut ready-to-eat foods and raw meat on one surface. But how many cutting boards really should be in the kitchen. two, five, ten, or maybe you can still get by with one? Let’s figure it out.

What if the board is one?

It so happens that in the kitchen there is only room for one board. for example, if we decide to get a good, massive (and quite expensive) end board. For those who are not familiar with this type of product, you need to make a small digression. Wooden boards are divided into two types. side and end. On the side (these are familiar to us products that are sold even in the most ordinary supermarkets), the wood fibers are located across the movement of the knife, and on the end ones. towards. The latter are considered optimal for cutting products, since they are less conducive to dulling the cutting edge of the knife. But, as a rule, the end boards are massive, and not every kitchen has room for at least two.

If there is only one board, you need to follow a certain order of cutting the ingredients for the dish: first. vegetables, fruits, a loaf, then fish, meat, and last of all. chicken. If you have to cut foods with a strong smell, it is also recommended to put them off “for later”. And, of course, such a board must be very thoroughly cleaned, treated with a vinegar solution, dried and stored in such a way that moisture does not accumulate under the board.

So, the main reason why you need to use multiple boards is the risk of infection. But there are other. not so serious, but no less important reasons. As we know, many products have a strong and persistent odor. These include fish, onions, garlic, and some types of cheese. The smell of these products is literally absorbed into the cutting board (especially if it is made of wood) and does not “fade away” for a long time. As a result, whatever we cut later on this board, these products receive distinct notes of “foreign” smell. Onion-flavored apple slice. what could be more disgusting??

Professional chefs and people who are seriously interested in cooking strongly recommend setting aside a separate board for onions and garlic, as well as for fish. If there is extra space in the kitchen, this advice can be heeded, but there are simple methods of dealing with odor. Before chopping fish, onions or garlic on a wooden board, wipe it with a lemon wedge or 9% vinegar solution, and after use, rinse with hot salted water (4 tablespoons of salt per liter of water).

Why do you need multiple boards?

Cutting boards are made from different materials, but wood and plastic are considered the most acceptable. We will not go deep into listing the advantages and disadvantages of both types. this is a topic for a separate article. Over time, grooves and crevices begin to form on the surface of the cutting board, in which pathogenic bacteria multiply. Even the strongest detergents (including those used for washing in the dishwasher) are not able to completely destroy all microorganisms.

The largest numbers of dangerous bacteria are found in poultry, fish and raw meat. Of course, after passing through heat treatment, they are destroyed, and the finished dish, with rare exceptions, does not pose any threat to us. But, whatever one may say, before cooking meat, fish or poultry, they have to be cut. cut into steaks, cleaned, removed the insides, and in the process of contact of food with the surface of the cutting board, infection invariably occurs. Subsequently, all products that will be cut on this board will also be contaminated.

It is logical to assume that cutting meat, vegetables and a loaf on the same board (even after washing it beforehand) is not a good idea. To avoid constant contamination of each other’s products, it is worth using at least two boards. one for meat, fish and poultry, the other for all other products.

But what if we are talking about ready-to-eat raw meat and fish? Which board should be used to process food for cooking tartare, carpaccio, sashimi and sushi? On the one hand, if we are going to eat these foods raw, it would be logical to cut them up on the ready-to-eat board. But the problem is that these products still contain a certain amount of pathogenic bacteria, and they will accumulate and multiply in the grooves of the cutting board in the same way. It is worth doing as follows: meat and fish that will be eaten raw must be cut on the board where the finished products are processed. But immediately after the completion of cutting, the board must be very thoroughly washed with detergent and treated with a weak solution of vinegar.

By the way, if fish and beef can be eaten raw, then with pork and poultry things are quite different. These products are the most common sources of cross-contamination, as they contain very dangerous bacteria and viruses, including staphylococcus, listeria, salmonella and many others. By the way, not everyone knows that meat (and especially poultry!) Is categorically not recommended to be washed under running water before heat treatment. Yes, many will be surprised by this fact, but scientists have proven that when washing an ordinary chicken, along with the smallest splashes of water, bacteria scatter within a radius of up to a meter from the kitchen sink, settling on the work surface of the table, human clothes, kitchen utensils and, of course, other products. Thus, cross-contamination occurs even without the participation of a cutting board. Of course, it is difficult for us to get rid of the habit accumulated over the years, because even my mother taught that before cooking, all products. including meat. must be thoroughly washed. But the fact is that with sufficient heat treatment, all pathogens die, but a shower from spray infected with salmonella and other bacteria can backfire with very unpleasant consequences.

Does it make sense to wind up a lot of boards?

Currently in Russia there are sanitary and epidemiological requirements for public catering organizations, according to which the kitchen of cafes, restaurants and canteens should have as many as 12 boards with the appropriate markings: “SM”. raw meat, “SR”. raw fish, “SO”. raw vegetables, “VM”. boiled meat, “VR”. boiled fish, “VO”. boiled vegetables, “MG”. meat gastronomy, “G”. gastronomy, “Z”. greens, “KO”. pickled vegetables, “Herring”, “X”. a loaf, “RG”. fish gastronomy. However, these rules have not changed since Soviet times, when hygiene and sanitation were raised into a kind of cult. With modern detergents, such a harsh separation hardly makes much sense.

It should be noted that the US Food and Drug Administration (US FDA) officially recommends using only two boards in home kitchens. It is highly doubtful that such an influential organization is not serious enough about the issue of sanitation.

So how many boards do you need in the end? From common sense, it is worth purchasing two boards of the largest possible size. Large boards are much more convenient than small boards if you need to prepare a large amount of food. On a large surface, you can cut, chop, chop several ingredients at the same time and move them to the edge of the board, making room for the next batch. But in pair with two large boards for meat / fish / poultry and ready-to-eat foods, you can buy 1-2 more boards of medium and small size. On a small board, it will be much more convenient to cut the sausage into a sandwich or a slice of lemon in tea. Optionally, one of these boards can be used to chop only onions, garlic and chili.

Thus, 2-4 cutting boards will be enough in the kitchen. over, it is more rational to give preference to a smaller number of higher quality products. Here, as nowhere else, the rule is relevant: less is better.

List of required materials and tools

Before you get started, you need to prepare the following materials and tools:

  • walnut boards;
  • epoxy resin;
  • aluminum tape;
  • paint;
  • band-saw;
  • roulette;
  • Sander.

Preparation phase

Saw the board up to 40 centimeters or any other size, whichever cutting board you want. Leave at least 5-10 centimeters as an allowance so you can trim off the epoxy after curing.

Saw the walnut tree in half if you have a large piece. Mine was about 30 centimeters, so I decided to cut it down to 15 centimeters.

I used 8 quarters walnut (5 centimeters thick) and I needed to cut the lumber in half. If you don’t have a band saw, buy a ready-made piece for a cutting board two or two and a half centimeters thick. From the lumber that I had, I got two cutting boards.

Take two pieces of walnut and put them side by side, draw wavy mowing line depending on what pattern you want to get. The drawing doesn’t have to be precise as I wanted the resin to look like a flowing river. For this part, if you don’t have a band saw, I recommend a spiral saw or jigsaw. A hand saw or a copier saw may also work.

I used a table saw to make the necessary wavy cuts so that the epoxy has more bonds. I highly recommend that you do this. If you don’t have a table saw, use a small hand chisel and cut a few grooves. Be careful not to pull the chisel towards you. Use a ruler to measure the width. My board was about 35 centimeters wide. The wider the width, the more epoxy you will need. I used about 400 grams of this material per board.

Application of epoxy resin

Be careful when lifting the board and be sure to press down on the edges to secure the bottom, add extra pieces of tape to keep it from leaking. I prefer to fold the tape around the edges.

Mix 400 grams of epoxy for your board. The two glasses in the photo above are for two cutting boards. Start mixing pigments with epoxy. I used three types of blue to achieve one shade: blue, cobalt blue, and caribbean blue. For the other board, I used Liberty Copper, Mahogany and Vivid Orange. Be sure to stir for at least 5 minutes so that the epoxy mixes well.

Make some swirls in the epoxy. You can use a torch or heat gun to blow bubbles out of it. Don’t get too close, all you need is a little color correction.

Pro Tips: How to Make a Walnut Cutting Board Using Epoxy

In this master class, I will teach you, dear readers, how to make a cutting board out of epoxy resin and walnut wood, which you can give to someone or keep for yourself. You can use it not only for cutting certain products, but also as a decoration, which is very practical and convenient.

Finishing touches

Take off the tape the next day.

Trim the edges and sand.

If you have a planer, align the product to save time. You will get grooves if your tape bends and it takes a while to get rid of the flaws.

I prefer to polish the whole thing after sanding, but this is not necessary. I was not a fan of the wax I used for this project, so I would instead try, for example, mineral oil.

A few finishing touches and you’re done. If you made, like me, two boards, then you can give one to someone as a souvenir, and the second can be kept for yourself.

Types of epoxy countertops

  • Fully epoxy, no support surface;
  • Epoxy coated wood, chipboard or other base materials;
  • Combined. loosely interlaced pieces of wood and resin.

A worktop without a support surface, only made of epoxy resin, can be made for an elegant coffee or coffee table, which is not supposed to be subjected to heavy loads. It will look original if you fill in a beautifully laid out ornament made of dried flowers or any other materials with epoxy resin. You can also add multi-colored or solid glitter to the transparent fill.

In the second case, epoxy resin for pouring countertops serves as a decorating and protective layer for a base made of another material. An old tabletop, solid wood or paneled surface, multiplex can be used as a basis.

The base can be of any shape. round or sustained in straight lines and with corners. The main thing in this case is to create for the base the sides of the height necessary for pouring, so that after hardening the tabletop has even and smooth side surfaces.

As a wooden base, you can take an array with a natural structure, or artificially decorate it with carving, milling, marquetry. In addition, after thorough cleaning of old paint and varnish, the old countertop can be polished, painted again and decorated with small stones, coins, dried flowers, even buttons.

An example of what a countertop coating looks like after pouring with epoxy

We make our own countertop

Since an epoxy countertop can be made with or without a base, we will consider both options. each has its own characteristics.

The tabletop, made only of epoxy resin without a base, looks very impressive due to its transparency and interspersed decorative elements. With certain skills, such a tabletop can be made with the most intricate outlines and an original 3D pattern in an array of hardened resin.

They make a transparent tabletop using glass as a form:

  • glass of the required size and shape is thoroughly cleaned, dried and degreased with acetone;
  • before pouring, the glass surface is rubbed with wax mastic, which, after hardening, is polished with a dry cloth;
  • polished aluminum corners are used as sides for the mold, the inner surface of which is treated with a paraffin-turpentine mixture. this will allow you to easily remove the frozen countertop from the mold;
  • the corners are attached to the bottom surface of the glass using window putty.

Another option is also possible, when the table top, completely made of epoxy resin, is then inserted into a frame made of a material suitable for the style of the product.

It takes 2-3 days for the fill to cure properly. Before that, you cannot remove the countertop from the mold.

So that you do not have to drill holes in the hardened resin for attaching the legs, foresee this in advance by outlining the places of future fastenings and strengthening small pieces of pipe of the required diameter in the form. After hardening, the segments are removed, and in their place fasteners for the legs are screwed.

A worktop on a wooden base is easier to make, since the resin for the worktops is poured onto the already prepared surface. At the same time, as in the case of the glass form, bumpers are made along the edges of the tabletop. they can be subsequently removed. And you can apply the option when the wooden sides are part of the countertop, and the resulting “bath” is filled with resin.

The process of pouring epoxy resin with your own hands is not so difficult, but it requires accuracy when working.

Countertops look very nice, where wooden parts alternate with transparent inserts. To do this, you can also use glass as a base, on which wooden fragments are laid out, and the distances between them are filled with epoxy filling.

If you plan to use an old board as a base, then the work must be carried out in two stages: first, existing cavities and cracks are slightly deepened in the board, which are then filled with tinted liquid epoxy resin. After the first layer has hardened, the entire tabletop is poured, while the previously filled recesses stand out beautifully on the transparent surface.

After the pouring work is over, it is necessary to protect the surface during solidification from moisture, dust and insects. they can significantly spoil the whole work. To do this, stretch polyethylene over the tabletop, fixed on a pre-prepared frame.

After complete crystallization of the material, the surface is polished and covered with a protective varnish.

Advantages and disadvantages of epoxy countertops

Epoxy resin is a unique material that can be used to create real masterpieces, from miniature decorations to large surfaces such as countertops and even floors.

Epoxy pot is a two-component material consisting of resin and hardener. One of the most remarkable properties of a fill is that it retains its original volume after drying. It covers surfaces with a uniform transparent layer without cracking or bulging. Therefore, using epoxy resin, you can turn any surface, no matter how complex configuration it may be, into a real work of art.

It can be used to cover surfaces with a pre-applied pattern or ornament, as well as with small decorative elements spread over the surfaces. In this case, the surface of the table will be an interesting 3D image, made according to an individual project.

The table top coated with epoxy resin, in addition to its spectacular appearance, acquires a number of advantages in operation over a conventional wooden or plastic surface:

  • When dry, the coating does not shrink and acquires a perfectly flat surface;
  • Has good resistance to mechanical damage. dents from impacts, cuts or chips;
  • Excellent moisture resistance, which is important for kitchen surfaces;
  • Not afraid of the aggressive effects of most cleaning chemicals;
  • Not subject to destruction by ultraviolet rays;
  • Does not require the use of expensive household chemicals for care.

The main disadvantages that epoxy resin has for pouring countertops include:

  • With a sharp drop in temperature, the appearance of “white flakes” in the depth of the filling;
  • When exposed to high temperatures, it can release toxins during evaporation;
  • When preparing a fill, precision in proportions is needed to obtain the desired result;
  • The need for strict adherence to safety precautions during work.

In order to remove the flakes that appear during hypothermia from the surface of the table, you can warm it up to 50-60 degrees. And you can avoid the evaporation of harmful substances from the epoxy surface if you cover it with a layer of protective transparent varnish, for example, a yacht.

Epoxy resin: making a beautiful countertop with your own hands

It often happens that the surface of the still sturdy table has acquired an unsightly appearance. Or you want to add some zest to the standard factory furniture after the renovation. For craftsmen who prefer creative solutions, there is a great way out: a do-it-yourself epoxy countertop. At the same time, such a tabletop will perfectly fit into the interior of any room: the main thing is to choose the right decorative details and place accents.

Rules for working with epoxy

There are several rules that must be strictly followed when working with epoxy:

  • old surfaces must be thoroughly cleaned of old paint, varnish, degreased and polished before pouring;
  • if this is a new board, it must be thoroughly dried and sanded with sandpaper before work;
  • when preparing an epoxy pot with a hardener, you must first measure the required amount of resin, and then add the hardener to it, strictly observing the proportions and mixing order of the components;
  • stir the filling very carefully, but without sudden movements, avoiding the formation of air bubbles;
  • all work must be carried out in a ventilated area;
  • since the resin is difficult to remove from surfaces when solidified, it is better to cover the floor with polyethylene or paper;
  • to work with epoxy, you should remove your hair under a hat and put on a cotton suit. any lint or hair that gets on the surface to be poured will spoil its appearance;
  • you should not carry out work on pouring the countertop in a room with high humidity or insufficiently warmed up. the air temperature should be at least 22 ° С;
  • you cannot accelerate the crystallization process of epoxy using a construction hair dryer. it boils at temperatures above 60 ° C, forming numerous bubbles.

The wood fill should be even and accurate.

Even a person who does not have experience in the art of carpentry is quite capable of making a tabletop from epoxy resin with his own hands.

The main condition for success is strict adherence to the instructions for preparing the filling, compliance with safety rules and the order of work. Imagine, create. and enjoy the results of your work!
