Car Chainsaw Chain Oil

Advantages of automatic systems

Less oil-consuming chainsaws equipped with automatic lubrication systems. Depending on the engine speed, the oil supply is metered by a variable displacement pump.

At idle speed, oil is practically not consumed. Models with automatic lubrication cut material consumption by almost half.

Adjustment of oil density to external temperature factors

The use of chain oil at low temperatures up to 20 ° C negatively affects the performance of the oil pump and the durability of its drive.

In the absence of the required material, the problem is solved by diluting the oil thickened in the cold. Dehydrated kerosene is the best solvent.

Such an additive will provide full lubrication of the headset, but it is recommended to significantly limit heavy loads when the saw is operating on diluted oil.

Versatility problems

Car Chainsaw Chain Oil

Performance evaluations of so-called multipurpose oils should be viewed critically. In reality, this is not a very good advertising move. To date, no manufacturer who respects its reputation has received information about the start of production of 100% universal oil.

Practice has shown that the wrong choice of chain lubrication increases the load on the engine by 7-10% and also reduces the working life of the saw set.

Storage features

For long-term storage in unheated rooms, we recommend placing new and used saw chains in oil baths. This method compares favorably with applying grease, since it excludes the formation of condensate moisture and local corrosion.

Versatility problems

A general purpose chain saw oil has a relatively unattractive performance. It should be borne in mind that even manufacturers of lubricants do not indicate their 100% versatility.

The wrong choice leads to the fact that the wear of the structure increases by about 10% and the working life of the saw set is reduced.

The above information indicates that there are no universal oil options. That is why, when choosing, you need to pay attention to the operational properties, in particular, the temperature regime.

Chainsaw chain oil selection rules

All modern chainsaws have a separate oil circuit for lubricating the cutting elements of the chain.

The quality of the saws largely depends on their condition and working conditions. Therefore, companies that produce accessories for chainsaws create special brands of oils that provide reliable surface lubrication.

Chainsaw sprocket lubricant

To increase the service life and reduce friction on the drive sprocket, the manufacturer equips this mechanism with a needle bearing, which must be lubricated periodically. Stihl multipurpose grease can be used for lubrication.

If you do not want to overpay, it is better to use an inexpensive, but no less high-quality option, Litol or Litol 24 grease. Due to its viscosity, Litol will easily replace the original.

It is possible to lubricate the chain saw tire sprocket with the same lubricants as the leading one, using a special filler for this. This allows the lubricant to be pressed in through the technological holes in the tire to the sprocket bearing.

Self-selection criteria

Problems often arise when the right branded oil cannot be found. Many experts recommend choosing an analog from well-known manufacturers that will ensure long-term operation of the device. Among the features of the choice of chain lubrication, we note the following points:

The operation of the lubrication system must be monitored in a timely manner. With the wrong choice of oil, the service life of the saw is reduced several times.

When and how to fill

Where to fill the chain oil is clear. There is a separate container for this. In most chainsaws, the size of this container is calculated based on the volume of the saw’s gas tank. When both tanks are full, they empty at about the same time. Therefore, it is recommended to fill the full volume of the oil tank at the same time as filling the fuel tank. Then you don’t have to be distracted by topping up twice.

Before starting work, it is useful to check if oil will flow to the chain. To do this, simply point the end of the tire onto a flat surface. Some of the grease will fly off the edge of the tire. Droplets on the surface indicate normal system operation.

At high negative temperatures, summer oil thickens and its lubricity deteriorates. Therefore, it is worth using brands designed for winter conditions. If this is not possible, then it is worth taking the time to dilute the existing oil to reduce its density. It is best to dilute with kerosene in a ratio of 1 to 4.

Some models have an adjustable feed rate in the lubrication system. It is useful for correcting in the event of a change in grease type.

Note! Do not fill the tank with a mixture of oils of different types. mineral and synthetic.

If you run out of oil from one manufacturer, and the same type is available, but from a different company, then their mixing is allowed, provided that they are used immediately. Leaving such a mixture for a long time is not worth it.

Basic rules of application

Two-stroke chainsaw oil is most often created on a mineral base. Less commonly, it is synthetics or semi-synthetics. Oil for 2-stroke chainsaw engines is mixed with fuel according to technology even before filling into the tank.

Pouring grease directly into the tank is also practiced, but it is not the most reliable method. Especially if the tank was completely empty. In this case, the plug is likely to partially enter the system without lubrication. And the engine will run dry for a while.

If, when using grease, it is found that a wet oil deposit remains on the spark plug, and dirty waste drips from the exhaust pipe, these are clear signs of incomplete combustion or the use of poor-quality grease. It is necessary to reconsider the choice of engine oil for the chainsaw and the proportion of its use.

Choose synthetic, semi-synthetic or mineral oil?

Here again, everything depends on the type of saw and its constructive purpose, as well as the nature of the work. If the saw works in industry for cutting thick logs or processing hardwood, and not at home (for household needs), in the long term it may well be more profitable to use synthetics or semi-synthetics.

Rules for the selection of oil for chainsaws and lawn mowers.

If the chainsaw is in household use, then ordinary mineral water is quite suitable.

How to mix gasoline with oil?

The exact technology of the mixing procedure itself (not proportion), which should be strictly adhered to, does not exist. An empty container with a measuring scale is usually taken, gasoline is poured into it.

For example, 1 liter. Then the lubricant is added. To take the necessary portion of the lubricant, a syringe or a measuring cup with a graduation of 1 ml is used. The mixture is thoroughly mixed and poured into the saw.

It is not recommended to use such a method as diluting oil and gasoline immediately in the spit’s fuel tank. Especially if the tank was completely dry before. Immediately after filling into the tank, gasoline will enter the fuel line without oil.

That is, after the oil is added, the saw will still work without lubrication for some time after starting. And this one is just at the moment of starting and warming up, when the engine needs protection the most.

Chainsaw oil: when to use synthetics

The correct selection of oil for a chainsaw is one of the main criteria that determine its service life. A wide variety of lubricants for two-stroke engines can be found on the market today.

And some owners of gasoline saws in the old fashioned way use engine oils of four-stroke internal combustion engines. In the material of the article, we will try to figure out which oil to use in various chainsaws and situations.

Mineral Stihl HP

Has a red tint. Not biodegradable. Using this oil is highly discouraged to use the chainsaw indoors.

The grease mixes well with gasoline. However, during prolonged downtime, it is recommended to completely drain the fuel from the tank, since in the diluted state the properties of the oil gradually decrease.

Even with long-term use of the saw with Stihl mineral lubricant, carbon deposits on the piston skirt, cylinder and spark plug are minimal. This lubricant is relatively cheap and most popular.

Stihl chainsaw oil

Stihl chainsaw engine oil is generally recognized as the best option for this technique today. And this is logical. No one knows better than the saw manufacturer what properties a lubricant should have to create the most favorable operating conditions.

There are several types of oil available from Stihl for gasoline saws. Two options are common.

Answers to frequently asked questions

Briefly answer the most frequently asked questions by owners of chainsaws.

Chainsaw oil Husqvarna

The company “Husqvarna”, which is also a major manufacturer of chainsaws, produces its own set of lubricants for its equipment. Engine oil for Husqvarna chainsaws is currently officially supplied to the Russian markets in only one form: Husqvarna HP.

Chainsaw oil for Husqvarna HP gasoline is a semi-synthetic product that fully meets all the requirements in force in the Russian Federation.

This lubricant works well with Husqvarna machinery, but can also be used successfully in saws from other manufacturers. Possesses excellent lubricating qualities, does not leave deposits on the parts of the cylinder-piston group.

How to dilute Husqvarna chainsaw oil and not make a mistake if there is no dispenser on the canisters of this company’s products? Here, all owners of gasoline saws are recommended to acquire a measuring container with a graduation rate of 1 ml.

The fact is that the lack and excess of lubricant will equally negatively affect the resource of the piston group of a two-stroke motor. Lack of piston wear will accelerate.

What kind of lubricant should I use for Husqvarna equipment if it is not possible to purchase an original? The answer is simple: anyone with similar properties. Stihl products are also suitable.

Is it possible to pour car oil into a chainsaw?

Yes, you can. One-time for simple tasks without heavy workload. For example, imagine the following situation.

Initially, no work was planned using a chainsaw. Therefore, the specialized lubricant 2T was not purchased in advance.

But upon arriving at the dacha, it was discovered that, for example, a tree had fallen on the fence. And it urgently needs to be cut and removed. In this case, you can use one-time motor lubricants.

Oil for chainsaws ROLF Garden 2T

The oil is produced on a synthetic base, which ensures the highest quality. Therefore, ROLF Garden 2T has low smoke, burns completely and with extremely low carbon deposits. At the same time, it reliably protects the engine from wear, because it has a balanced additive package. With prolonged engine operation on ROLF Garden 2T, rapid contamination of the muffler with carbon deposits and products of incomplete combustion of oil, which reduce the power of the chainsaw, is eliminated.

The oil was developed specifically for garden equipment, where the main lubrication method is a ready-made fuel mixture. When creating ROLF Garden 2T, this was taken into account, and the product received excellent stability when mixed with gasoline. The finished composition during storage excludes delamination, clogging of the carburetor channels. The oil does not reduce the octane number of gasoline, eliminates the risk of detonation under load.

Due to its low freezing point, ROLF Garden 2T is excellent for winter work, which maintains the efficiency of engine lubrication with the fuel mixture. The oil burns well in the engine, reducing the risk of spark plug failure. Thus, the amount of maintenance required for the chainsaw can be kept to a minimum.

The quality of the oil is confirmed by the approvals of the largest chainsaw manufacturers. In addition, ROLF Lubricants GmbH offers a simple and effective anti-counterfeiting system: all of the company’s products are packaged only in tin containers. As practice shows, counterfeit in such conditions practically does not occur on the market: packaging in plastic is more profitable for counterfeiters.

Chainsaw oil

How to choose your chainsaw oil

The main quality indicator, which can be assessed on your own, is smokiness during combustion. Modern standards for two-stroke oils directly set the ultimate requirements. Therefore, high-quality oil with a normal composition of the fuel mixture should smoke minimally.

Unlike automotive lubricants, where API (American Petroleum Institute) sets the standard, two-stroke oils are generally based on their own grade. The JASO F system, developed in Japan, is now the most widely used system. The largest proportion of lubricants for two-stroke engines are JASO FC and FD. It was the JASO FC class that in due time introduced the concept of “low smoke oil”. That is, the oil for lubricating the chainsaw must at least correspond to this particular class, in order not only to protect the engine from wear, but also to make the work more comfortable.

It makes sense to use JASO FD lubricant under heavy load. This class defines more stringent requirements for engine carbon deposits. This will make the motor less likely to require cleaning of the piston ring grooves.

It is also desirable that the oil has confirmed classes according to the European ISO system. It is based on the JASO system, but further strengthens the requirements for engine cleanliness. Therefore, an oil with an ISO-L-EGD grade (based on JASO FD) will give the engine the best possible cleanliness.

How to determine the ratio of gasoline to oil

The mixing ratio of oil and gasoline is indicated by the manufacturer in the instructions and is usually duplicated on the gas tank cap. However, it should be borne in mind that on old saws, the ratio concerned low quality mineral oils, which is why the lubricant had to be added to gasoline in an increased volume.

Modern synthetic oils for two-stroke engines are able to reliably lubricate the engine already at a ratio of 50: 1, while earlier the norm was 25: 1 and even 20: 1. An increase in the concentration of synthetics in the fuel mixture will not reduce engine wear, but smoke and carbon formation will increase. Finally, operating costs will also rise. oil will have to be purchased more often.

Chainsaw engine oil must meet a number of requirements. First of all, this is high thermal stability and antiwear properties: when using a chainsaw, especially in summer, the engine can heat up to high temperatures. Since the exhaust goes directly into the work area, minimal smoke is desirable. Taking these points into account, ROLF Lubricants GmbH creates a special oil for gasoline-powered tools and garden equipment with two-stroke engines.

Fuel mixture preparation rules

The fuel mixture for chainsaws should be prepared in a clean container to prevent clogging of the carburetor and damage to the engine from mechanical impurities. The measured volume of oil is poured first. this way you can spend less time mixing until smooth. When filling with gasoline, it combines well with oil.

It is most convenient to prepare the mixture in the same quantity. For example, 1 liter of gasoline will require 20 milliliters of oil. The same measure can be used for any other multiples of volume.

It is advisable to use the prepared composition as quickly as possible. This is due to the inevitable aging of gasoline: a mixture that has been stored for a long time can impair the starting of the chainsaw. The smoke of combustion may also increase; detonation is likely at high loads. At the same time, the risk of mixture stratification, due to which the storage of benzene-oil mixtures was not previously recommended, is not relevant for modern two-stroke oils.

What parts of a chainsaw need oil

The quality of the lubricant directly determines the engine life. Despite the small working volume, chainsaw motors are used relatively heavily. The inertial loads on the parts of the crank mechanism are proportional to the square of the revolutions. Since most gasoline tools most often run at “full throttle”, chainsaw oil must retain its properties at high shear rates, avoid dry friction in the crankshaft bearings and piston group.

In addition to the engine, the tire also needs lubrication: the sliding chain inevitably wears it out. Forced oil supply from a separate reservoir saves resource both for the tire and the chain itself. The oil used for lubrication should, if possible, be as viscous and sticky as possible in order to better adhere to the chain and tire, and not fly apart. Additionally, according to environmentalists’ requirements, such oils are usually biodegradable.

Choice of oil for chain lubrication

The lubricant is supplied to the chain automatically by a miniature pump connected to the crankshaft. In this case, the main point that must be considered when choosing is viscosity, since it determines the effectiveness of the lubricant. Liquid oil will penetrate better into the links of the chain, but it will be worse to hold on to it. It can also leak when storing and transporting your chainsaw. It should be filled only during winter operation to ensure the supply of lubricant to the tire.

There are no special requirements for the quality of the oil; almost any one will provide a sufficient level of wear protection. Therefore, as a rule, inexpensive grades of common oils are chosen, for example, transmission.

Specialized saw lubricants are primarily environmentally friendly, and not any special properties for protecting the chain and bar. over, biodegradable oils are more difficult to choose. This is due to their tendency to grease during long-term storage, which may interfere with the supply of oil to the chain. At the same time, automotive lubricants are much more stable, and their use in private households (not in logging) has little effect on the environment.
