DIY Tiller Wheel Chains

How to make lugs with existing factory wheels

The easiest way is to put the structure on the tire like snow chains.

tiller, wheel, chains

It is enough to take sheet metal with a thickness of 2-3 mm, and cut a strip that will be slightly wider than the tire profile. The preload is provided by a simple tie made of bolted studs. The edges of the strip should be folded to prevent slipping under lateral loads.

The lugs are cut from thicker sheet steel (4-5 mm). They need to be bent in the middle at an angle of 120 °. Then the workpieces are welded to the strips at regular intervals.

Therefore, before starting work, you should use ready-made drawings, or develop a layout yourself.

Such lugs can be made with your own hands in a couple of evenings. If you use a regular smooth tread on a homemade trailer, the device will turn the equipment into a real SUV.

We will acquaint fans of small mechanization with various types of structures, and varying degrees of complexity.

DIY tiller lugs are a good way to save money

  • How to make lugs with existing factory wheels
  • The simplest do-it-yourself lugs for a tiller
  • Homemade lugs for a tiller of complex design
  • Combined lugs

What we call wheels. in the case of a tiller, is a lug. In the overwhelming majority of factory designs, the equipment is equipped with conventional wheels with embossed tires for off-road.

This is done in order to be able to use the tractive force for the transport of goods on ordinary dirt roads. Important! The use of a tiller (even factory made) on public roads is prohibited. Even if it has quality factory wheels installed.

Therefore, many owners of small agricultural machinery make lugs for the tiller with their own hands. In this case, it is only necessary to fit the landing nest to the hubs of the factory motor plow. When changing the mode of use, simply mount the desired wheels.

If the tiller is used only in the field, ordinary rubber tires are not needed. And for a mini-tractor of your own production, you do not have to make ordinary wheels at all. In this case, homemade lugs for the tiller will be the only kit.

The design is not new, the first tractors were produced without rubber tires. The wheels were metal, and powerful transverse or diagonal plates of thick steel were installed on the drive rollers.

The simplest do-it-yourself lugs for a tiller

For manufacturing you will need:

  • steel sheet 4-5 mm thick for wheel rims;
  • steel sheet 6-8 mm thick for hooks;
  • Angle Grinder;
  • welding machine;
  • drilling machine or powerful drill.

Cut out two identical discs from a thinner sheet. In the center we make a hole for the hub and for attaching the wheel to the studs. Cut sawtooth protrusions along the outer edge, 10 cm deep.

Cut out triangular hooks from a thick sheet with cut corners. We weld them strictly perpendicular to the sawtooth notches. Everything, the design is ready for use.

Despite the unprepossessing design, homemade lugs for a tiller made in this way have an important advantage. They are heavy enough to provide a firm grip even on loose or soggy surfaces.

Of course, there can be no question of any kind of movement on a dirt road. These wheels are designed exclusively for field use.

Another economical option is made from a steel circle with a diameter of 15 mm. You can use the steering wheel from the valve on the main gas pipeline, if you can get a pair somewhere. Hooks are welded to the outer rim, and a suitable hub is attached in the center.

The next design is made from car rims. This is the best option for a homemade tiller. When designing, you provide for the standard wheel hubs from the car, and you purchase a complete set of 4 rims. Install tires on one pair, and the second will be for heavy soil.

We take a regular steel corner 50-60 mm and cut it into pieces, slightly wider than your discs. In the middle of one side we cut an angle grinder triangular sector 60 °.

We heat the corner with a gas burner and bend it along the cutout. The joint can be lightly tacked by welding for extra rigidity. We weld the resulting blanks to the outer side of the disc, maintaining an equal distance.

We repeat the assembly on the second disk, keeping in mind the same distance between the corners. Now you can quickly change rubber wheels to steel lugs without experiencing problems with the seat. The disks are the same!

The design of the rims can be simplified. It is enough to cut off the horizontal part (rim) and weld on the steel plates.

The variant is suitable for frequent wheel changes on the same hub type. Only the disks need to be matched.

Homemade lugs for a tiller of complex design

The products considered above are easy to manufacture, but their consumer properties are far from perfect. Therefore, we suggest that you familiarize yourself with the design, which is not inferior in quality to factory counterparts.

For manufacturing you will need:

  • Steel sheet 4-5 mm for the central disc;
  • Steel strip 50 mm wide 4-5 mm thick for the outer supporting surface. There will be 6 such hoops. The outer rings make the wheel heavier and stronger;
  • Steel plate 8-10 mm thick for hooks;
  • Arc welding machine, angle grinder, drill or drilling machine.

All connections are made using electric welding, a gas burner will not heat metal of this thickness.

Since the diameter and width of the lugs are larger than the seat for standard wheels, we lengthen the axles.

over, it is necessary to provide for the possibility of adjusting the track, depending on the width of the rows in the field. By moving the wheels with hooks, you can set any width and position of the attachment. Each wheel weighs at least 10 kg, so strong traction is ensured.

It is important to understand that such wheels are not implements for plowing or loosening, although some soil treatment is present. It will not work to use them as a loosening cutter, since an independent fulcrum is required.

If you are not faced with the question of how to make the lugs heavier, the structure can be made more delicate and light. Such wheels work well on “light” soils with preliminary loosening.

In such a project, the discs are made of small diameter, the rim is supported by an openwork spoked structure made of profiled steel sheet. Steel thickness for hooks no more than 8 mm. Each wheel weighs less than 7 kg.

Combined lugs

If your technique is homemade, and the ground is not too difficult for work, the wheels should be suitable. You can make do-it-yourself lugs on the tiller using a tractor tread.

For manufacturing, you need the halves of the rims from the “Zhiguli”. We select tires with a developed tread from the tractor. We cut off the sidewalls, we get a closed rubber ring with a good tread. We open the halves from the rims and twist them firmly after laying the tires.

The resulting lugs allow you to move along a compacted dirt road without fear of loosening it. On the soft soil of the plowed field, the wheels will also not let you down, although the tractive effort will be less than when using the metal version.

If, in addition to the tenacity of the wheels, there is the task of obligatory loosening of the soil in the rut, knife-type lugs are made. You can create a homemade rim for attaching the hooks, or you can weld them onto rims.

The only drawback of this design is that the knife-type lugs are not suitable for normal tiller movement. In any case, the land in the track will be plowed up. When loosening the soil in spring in combination with traditional nozzles, the width of the soil cultivated in one pass doubles, saving your time.

Output:
It doesn’t matter which way you make the lugs. The main thing is that it is not difficult at all, and the savings are huge.

There are still questions, see homemade lugs for the tiller from what was found in the barn.

Wheel types

First you need to figure out what types of wheels for a tiller generally exist. Since the technique is used in a variety of farming processes, the equipment may vary. This also applies to pneumatic wheels, because a good result and ease of use also depend on the right components. It is important to note that ordinary car wheels from “Oka”, “Niva” or “Moskvich” cannot be put on the tiller. All of the options below are larger and heavier. It would be more correct to compare them with ATV kits, although they are not always of the right size.

  • Pneumatic. This option can be supplied for arable work and for removing roots from the soil. In appearance, these are large wheels, with a diameter of 40 cm and a width of 20 cm. The pattern on the tread must be rough in order for the tiller to work well on the soil. Often this option comes standard and is renowned for its durability. However, if they become unusable, then you should immediately look for a replacement.
  • Traction. The popular name for these wheels is a herringbone. All because of the pronounced pattern on their rubber. This look is also versatile and suitable for lug or standard transport solutions. For example, they are often used by snow blowers. Traction tires for the tiller are also reliable in everyday life.
  • Solid (most often made of rubber). One-piece assemblies are ideal for stony ground. They allow the tiller to move faster on such terrain and do not deteriorate after the first use. Of the minuses, they are really very heavy, so it’s not so easy to transfer them. Similar tires are suitable for MTZ series trailers and diesel vehicles.
  • Metallic. The last variation is suitable for clay soil. The thing is that, unlike the previous wheels, these have steel teeth. This, of course, makes the technique heavier, but in soft ground they do their job perfectly. In another way, metal teeth are also called lugs.

As for general recommendations, when choosing what to wear your tiller, pay attention to the front wheel. It is supporting and in the process of use absorbs the entire mechanism. This helps to extend the life and improve the quality of work.

In general, this classification of pneumatic wheels is used not only for the tiller, but also for trailers or other tools from the same category. So you can safely use it, because to maintain the durability of all equipment, the farmer’s assortment should include both a trailer and a tiller.

Making wheels for the tiller with our own hands

tiller is a technique that most farmers are familiar with. In fact, it is a mobile tractor that is used for plowing soil, planting plants or transporting goods. It is convenient in small suburban areas, where it is already difficult to do everything with your hands, but a large tractor is not needed. If you are reading this article, then you either already have a tiller, or you are going to purchase one.

One of the most frequent questions of the owners of this technique is how to make wheels for a tiller with your own hands? The thing is that, as standard, they wear out very quickly, and are also not suitable for all types of soils and reliefs. Buying new ones is quite costly, so you can resort to your own skill. This article will look at exactly how to do this.

How to make wheels with your own hands

Having dealt with the types of tires, you should learn how to make the same, but homemade. The first thing to consider is that you won’t be able to make wheels for a tiller from scratch anyway. You will need a base. old pneumatic wheels from a car, for example, from “Oka” or from “Niva”. In this matter, it all depends on your choice or the availability of suitable material. And by the way, farmers do not recommend buying a new set of tires for rework, as they are not cheap and as a result, you will not be able to save a decent amount by doing the rest of the work yourself.

The second thing, without which nothing will come of it, is to prepare the drawings before starting the process. This issue must be approached responsibly, and the drawings must meet the requirements based on the available materials.

Paired wheels are often made, where an additional weighting agent can be placed inside. Let’s start with this option. The tandem version is a quick and efficient wheel conversion that is available to many. You will need 4 wheels with a good base made of stainless steel (by the way, the masters have tires from Moskvich). You also need to have iron plates with you. The process itself is carried out in several steps.

  • The rubber tire is removed from the base.
  • To the rim on which the tire is put on, it is necessary to weld several plates of iron, up to 5 cm wide.Usually, a square is formed from the plates, which is welded to one of the sides of the rim.
  • Next, the rim from the second wheel is welded to this square. Thus, you connect the two rims to each other using plates and welding.
  • At the last stage, the rubber is put on again on the rims.

That’s it, you’ve got the kit you need. As you can see, their main advantage is their large width. Thanks to this, they look less like wheels from a car, and more like an option for a tiller.

The second option, how to strengthen pneumatic wheels, is to increase their wear resistance due to additional materials. In this way, you can remake the wheels of a transport vehicle such as a motorcycle or ATV. In general, you will need larger tires than a regular passenger car. And to increase rigidity, large chains may be suitable.

Let’s move on to the process itself: chains need to be welded to pneumatic wheels. You can try pairing them with rubber or an iron rim. Next, you need to make notches on them so that they imitate the lugs. The result should be similar to purchased metal wheels.

You will have to tinker with this method so that the chains are tightly held and do not fly off during work. This is where blocking chains with a rim comes in handy, which can be done with steel fasteners and hooks.

An additional element that is often lacking for the convenience of working with a tiller is an unblocker, sometimes called a differential. Since the instrument itself is heavy, it is often difficult to control it, namely, to turn in different directions. In this case, an unblocker comes to the rescue. a special device that is attached to the wheels and increases their maneuverability in difficult areas.

The release tool is bolted to the output shafts of your tiller. During operation, it reduces the turning radius of the entire machine and increases the track width. If you use a mini tractor on a regular basis, then this thing is simply irreplaceable. You can make an unblocker yourself based on bearings, but in fact, the game is not worth the trouble. On the market they can be found in a wide variety of variations, and unlockers are inexpensive. The most important thing is to find a specialist who will advise on a good product.

So, if you have a need for a new “shoe” for a tiller and you can use tires from a regular car or motorcycle, then why not give it a try. This article lists the simplest and most popular options, but it all depends on your experience and skills. In fact, the solution is very simple, you only need welding and a little skill. But for a good result, consult with experienced craftsmen before starting work.

How to make snow chains with your own hands

If you are going to make chains for the wheels of a car or SUV with your own hands, you need to purchase accessories for it. The main thing here is the chains. Better than Russian and European production. Finding them is not difficult. They are the guarantee that the design will be reliable. First of all, decide which version of the snow chain will be made by hand.

The simplest and most affordable design with chain crossbars around the entire circumference of the tire. But other geometric shapes of the crossbars are not excluded. They can be made in the form of a rhombus, hexagon, cross, etc. The dimensions are pre-determined, and a simple drawing is made on paper. A model of the product is assembled from cardboard or twine and superimposed on the tire.

This will help you figure out how to make your own wheel chains. It is necessary to take into account the experience of home-builders, who are confident that two transverse parts of the device are needed at the point of contact with the ground. It is also important to determine where to anchor the links. Making wheel chains with your own hands requires the preparation of their parts, taking into account the geometry of the rubber.

To start work, you must have:

  • chain of the required length with a margin;
  • carabiners equipped with a wrap-around clutch;
  • tightening hooks;
  • tensioning mechanism;
  • fasteners for threaded connections.

The metal parts must be made of steel and the links are welded. For small cars, the thickness of the link bar is not less than 5 mm. Check the prepared elements with the drawing and finally clarify where to fix them. The bus can serve as the basis for the layout.

Then they begin preparatory work, which includes:

  • cutting an angle grinder of workpieces for longitudinal and transverse parts;
  • securing the first transverse lug to the desired link of the longitudinal element;
  • using hooks and rings to connect subsequent cross members at predetermined locations;
  • installation of the tensioning mechanism in the center of the longitudinal part.

Carry out this on a flat surface, constantly checking the drawing. After the final check, production begins. For strength and convenience, it is worth abandoning bolted connections. Welding significantly strengthens the product and makes it easier to use. The cost of it will pay off with quality and reliability. The Web contains many recommendations to help you figure out how you can make chains on wheels with your own hands. In any case, they should be made slowly, specifying the dimensions at each stage and checking the correctness of the connections.

Factory and homemade chains

In most cases, a simple device is created from the links of a steel chain with a system for its tension. They are distributed evenly on the outside and inside of the wheel. They are connected by transverse parts that cling to the road. Ignoring the evenness of the placement of parts makes anti-skid doubtful and fraught with rupture.

Making chains on wheels with your own hands

Often, motorists make snow chains on wheels with their own hands. This is necessary to ensure stable traffic on bad roads. Such products are quite justified if the car drives out on loose ground or snow and moves confidently. They cannot be used on asphalt and concrete roads.

How to put chains on wheels

Self-made snow chains are tested on a car. For this, the place where the check is planned must be prepared, and the rubber must be cleaned of dirt. Experienced in two ways. One involves the use of a jack, the other without it. The advantage of using a jack is that the anti-skid equipment adheres very tightly to the rubber. Before starting this operation, the vehicle is reliably immobilized. After jacking up, air is released in the tire. After installation, the pressure is restored.

In the second version, on a flat surface in front of the wheels, it is necessary to unfold the chain. A car drives into its middle and is fixed with a handbrake. Donning takes place in such a way that the tensioning mechanism with hook and carabiner is located on the outside of the wheel. Then a hook is attached to the longitudinal element from the inside. The transverse parts are evenly distributed over the surface of the tire, after which tension and fixation are made.

When it is installed, you have to drive a hundred meters. Stop, check the tension around the entire circumference of the wheel and the reliability of the fastening. In any case, the tires must be equipped before they get on the difficult road. For comfortable use of homemade equipment, you need a cover made of waterproof material and gloves for work.

How to make snow chains on wheels with your own hands: design and varieties

The snow chain helps the driver cope with difficult situations, such as driving off-road or getting out of mud. It is also a great alternative to winter tires. And most importantly, every car owner can make chains on wheels with his own hands.

  • Tensioners
  • Chain
  • Vise
  • Angle Grinder
  • Hooks
  • Jack

Almost all car owners have heard about snow chains, with the help of which ordinary road tires are turned into off-road wheels. You can make such chains on wheels with your own hands without wasting time and effort. By the way, this device will become indispensable for drivers living in the northern regions or those who like to drive their car into nature (hunting fishing). Also, extreme drivers cannot do without snow chains, who cannot imagine their life without “pokatuski” on off-road or virgin soil. But before you start making this wonderful design, you need to know that a chain welded from reinforced wire and characterized by an increased level of strength is suitable for these purposes. It is better not to consider other variants of chains, since at the moment of high speed or towing they can break and entail negative consequences.

As a rule, the choice of the design of the chain is based on the possibilities and conditions of use. The most difficult to manufacture is considered to be a chain in the form of a rhombus and honeycomb. But, despite the complexity of such structures, as a result, the car will be able to find a smoother ride, and its handling will noticeably improve (which has been proven by many experienced drivers). In addition, you will not be afraid to immerse yourself in loose soil at all. But for those who want to acquire a simple and fairly easy-to-use system, a chain in the form of a ladder would be an excellent option. By the way, with its help, you can afford a carefree ride on any off-road. But it is necessary to take into account the fact that such a chain contributes to the movement of the car in jerks, and this does not have a very good effect on the suspension and transmission. Therefore, the continuous use of this type of snow chain is only recommended in special cases and not on a permanent basis.

So, in order to make the lightest and most popular among many motorists version of the chain in the form of a ladder, you first need to prepare the chain itself. For this, an angle grinder is cut into two or four pieces, which must necessarily correspond to the diameter of the wheel. Plus, you need to cut the longitudinal chains of the structure in the amount of sixteen pieces. It should be remembered that the vehicle’s passability depends on the greater number of crossbars. Therefore, it is not worth saving on chains in this case. Next, the chain is fixed with a vise and hooks are used to connect the parts at the same distance. At this point, it is important to observe the symmetry of the entire structure and carefully monitor the number of links. Now we need to tighten the chain. For these purposes, it is recommended to use two tensioning devices that will help speed up the whole process.

And finally, in order to secure the chains well on the wheels, the car must be lifted. As a rule, this is done with the help of a jack, which every car owner has at hand. Having raised to the required height and fixing the machine, put on the chains, and then fix them well. By the way, this can be done thanks to one more method: the chain in the right position breaks down on the ground, and then the wheel does not run over it. If the vehicle is single-axle driven, it is best to use the chains exclusively on the drive wheels. As for all-wheel drive cars, all four wheels are equipped with chains. As soon as the whole procedure is completed, the car must be run-in. In this case, it will be enough to “wind” about fifteen kilometers. Then you should tighten the locks and you can safely go to conquer any off-road or take trips along heavily snow-covered roads.

Having become the proud owner of a light tiller with a 6.5 hp engine. the first season will be a test for everyone, all the pros and cons of factory performance will be on the face, to understand this you do not need a lot of experience. Truth is learned in action.

We will talk about the wheels. the set includes most often herringbone chamber tires on light rims of the 8th or 10th diameter. These wheels are actually rather weak. insufficient weight, I consider lightness a disadvantage. Installation of additional weights is required. The width of the tire is narrow, the permeability is low. the tiller slips and buries on a wet surface. To travel long distances outside your vegetable gardens, be patient. the speed is low. Tire production China. enough for one or two full seasons, these tires burst along the side under heavy loads, while the tread itself remains unchanged. Simply put, “oak” rubber for sale.

Alternatively, you can use car rims, wheels. We choose the diameter according to the principle. what is in the garage))) A plus will be the presence of a good mud protector. The higher and narrower your wheel is, the more comfortable it will be to control the tiller, the ride will become softer. The clearance will increase. this will be a huge plus.

The rework process itself does not take much time. The presence of a special tool is not required.

Step by step: unscrew the hubs from the factory wheels. usually these are bolts and nuts (12-13)

Next, we fix them with the help of more durable bolts and nuts on a turnkey basis by 17 to the disk from the car, having previously drilled more holes in the hubs. We select discs according to the number of holes on your hubs (4-5)

We check whether the cotter pin is freely inserted to fix the hub through the extension. The track will become wider, we check if the new wheels touch the parts and parts of the tiller, in this case the wings

Wheels for tiller. Do-it-yourself lugs.

Criterias of choice

  • Pneumatic. Such products have a rubber tire and a camera.
  • Rubber. One-piece construction that consists of a rim and durable rubber.
  • Grousers. Metal elements aimed at increasing the cross-country ability of vehicles.

The complexity of the choice lies in determining the operating conditions of the equipment. For example, for working on clayey or wet soil, it is recommended to use lugs.

a tiller equipped with conventional rubber wheels will not perform well in difficult conditions. In addition, attention should be paid to the wheel radius and tread pattern.

Wheelsets belong to the category of quick-change equipment, so it makes sense to purchase two types of chassis. For example, lugs and pneumatic wheels. This will allow you to work with equipment in different weather conditions.

What wheels can I put on a tiller? Much depends on the intended use of the technique. If the unit is needed for planting and harvesting work, you can stop on pneumatic wheels.

These products are ideal for working on soft ground. The recommended radius is about 40 centimeters. At the same time, we recommend choosing wheels with deep tread, which will increase maneuverability and cross-country ability.

For primary cultivation of virgin land and soil with increased m stones, it is better to use cast wheels. They practically do not receive mechanical damage due to the lack of an internal chamber.

However, such elements have increased weight, therefore they are installed on medium and heavy tillers.

The lugs not only increase the vehicle’s cross-country ability, but also increase its productivity. The tines enter the soil, which creates additional force to move the machine in a given direction.

Such elements are used mainly for arable work on large tracts of land. It is impractical to use lugs on a small personal plot.

Choosing wheels for a tiller and do-it-yourself replacement

When purchasing a tiller on a farm, people focus on engine power and equipment performance. However, the performance of the unit is directly affected by the wheels for the tiller. The undercarriage allows the unit to move around the personal plot.

Factory models are usually equipped with a suitable wheelset. But given the loads on this structural element, the wheels often break. Accordingly, the farmer has to buy the failed part on his own.

We will advise you on how to choose the right wheels and suggest DIY options for making a running gear.

Do it yourself

Now let’s talk about how to make the wheels for the tiller yourself. Let’s clarify right away that the creation of pneumatic and cast wheels at home is, in principle, impossible.

And why reinvent the wheel when you can equip garden equipment with tires from a car or motorcycle. You just need to install a suitable hub and you can get to work.

Genius Homemade Idea accessories for cars

Another thing is when it comes to lugs. Such homemade wheels for a tiller can really be made by yourself. Here is a basic assembly diagram:

  • We take old disks from the car. Please note that only the rim is needed. The diameter of the wheels depends on the power of the tiller, given that the structure will be all-metal, the weight will be considerable.
  • We weld metal plates to the discs. The edges of the plates should touch the edge of the rim. This is an important structural element, so the plates are welded along the entire outer radius, you can fix them with bolts to increase reliability.
  • We weld the teeth to the metal plate. They can be made from a corner, after cutting it into pieces of the desired length. Please note that the distance between the teeth should not exceed 15-20 centimeters. Otherwise, the efficiency of such wheels will be reduced to zero.
  • We weld the axle shafts into the disk, supplement the structure with bearings and install the chassis on the tiller.

You can make lugs from an old gas cylinder. In this case, you need to cut out two rims, about 6-7 centimeters wide, and then proceed according to the above scheme.

In general, lugs can be constructed from any material at hand that has the shape of a circle. The main thing is to show desire and apply a little skill.

How to make do-it-yourself lugs for a tiller from car disks: drawings and dimensions, description

Many farmers and gardeners are interested in how to make tiller lugs. tillers and motor-cultivators of various brands are designed for farming and gardening, processing personal plots. With the help of these units, you can loosen the soil, plant, weed and dig up potatoes (and other crops). But all these operations are performed with additional equipment (openers, plows, trailers, snow plows, etc.).

Details: Which Locks On Homemade Snow Chains Are Better And Why?

In the manufacture of traction control devices in garage conditions, drivers most often use the following types of locking mechanisms to fix them on the tire:

  • S-shaped;
  • hook-shaped;
  • ratchet.

Some homemade wheel chains are equipped with an S-shaped lock structure, which is locked with a four- or hex key. However, many complain about the unreliable fixation and lack of adjustments in this option. In addition, the installation of such equipment is a complete inconvenience.

The second option for fixing the chain device is more common and holds quite well. When the chain is correctly laid, fastening is done with a screwdriver without any problems. For a full guarantee, motorists are advised to tie the contact point with a soft wire of 1-3 mm. Disassembly is also fast and effortless.

The ratchet lock model was previously used on trucks. Differs in high reliability and ease of use. The sample provides fixation without the use of additional materials.

What you need to make homemade car snow chains on wheels?

It should be said that information on how to make snow chains with your own hands and videos does not always include a list of structural elements. Let us dwell on the simplest model, made according to the “ladder” scheme. To implement it you will need:

  • chain with a cross section of at least 5 mm made of steel;
  • carbines with threaded coupling;
  • tensioning mechanism;
  • washers, bolts and nuts;
  • hooks, carabiners.

On average, the assembly of chain devices for driving wheels of a passenger car will require about 15 meters of chain, more accurate figures will be known only after specific measurements. It is recommended to use stainless steel hardware as chains. The preparatory process ends with the collection of the tool:

How to install snow chains on a car with your own hands and video of the operation

Experts recommend mounting traction control equipment on all wheels, and not just on the leading ones. Improper installation can damage ABS sensors, brake system components and wheel arch liners, as well as side cuts of the tire. On SUVs with a connected second axle, the device is first of all put on the pair that is constantly in operation. The installation operation is performed in two ways:

  • Jacking up.
  • On a stationary car.

The crux of the matter is not only how to correctly make snow chains on a car with your own hands from a video. you should think about installation work even before entering a problem area. This is the only way to get pleasure from the performed operation, save your time and avoid annoying mistakes.

It makes no sense to describe the first method using a jack. the procedure is elementary and will not cause any difficulties even for a novice driver. The only recommendation is to lower the tire pressure to make the job easier.

Another question is when this device is not at hand. In this case, you can install the chains on snow wheels with your own hands using the following technology:

  • lay the product in front of the wheelset, avoiding twisting of the links;
  • run over the product with wheels;
  • use the hand brake;
  • put on the device so that the hook and carabiner are on the outside of the wheel;
  • connect the hook and the last link of the longitudinal part from the inner side of the wheel;
  • put the carabiner clutch on the tensioning system from the outside and fix the knot;
  • distribute cross members around the entire perimeter of the tire and stretch.

Important! To evenly distribute the components of the equipment, drive 20-30 meters and then make the final adjustment. This event will be a guarantee of maximum adherence of the product to the rubber.

Experienced motorists can cite thousands of examples when mud, ice or deep snow prevents a successful trip. The power of the driving wheels is powerless in such situations. only a tug or a winch. After such unpleasant moments, some owners refuse to travel in bad weather, others put studded tires. However, there is another category of drivers who prefer to independently make additional equipment to increase cross-country ability.

How to make do-it-yourself lugs

Homemade tiller lugs can be made from machine discs. If a farmer has an old car, which is a pity to throw in a landfill, with whole discs and rims, then they can be used to make lugs for a tiller from car rims.

For this you will need:

  • rims;
  • welding machine (or angle grinder);
  • square plates;
  • drawing or diagram of lugs for the tiller (it will greatly facilitate the work).

So, in order to make the lugs for the tiller from the disks of the car, you need to weld the axle shaft to them, on which the bearings are then put on. Square plates must be welded to the disks from the car.

After the performed procedures, it is necessary to make plate-teeth that will bite into the soil, providing the necessary adhesion to it. The teeth can be made from solid metal layers by cutting out the required size with a welding machine or by welding small plates together.

The teeth are welded to square plates on discs at a distance of 15-16 cm from each other. A deviation of 2-3 cm is permissible, but for the best operation of the unit, you must carefully follow the instructions of the drawings and diagrams.

For this you will need:

  • gas bottle (used);
  • angle grinder or welding machine;
  • metal teeth plates;
  • drawings or diagrams of tiller lugs of the desired brand.

First, you need to cut out two discs from the cylinder, which will serve as rims for the tiller’s wheels. Then, as in the first option, weld square plates, and teeth to them.

Another option is to weld steel lugs. For this you will need:

  • steel layers 4-5 mm thick;
  • steel layers 6-8 mm thick;
  • welding machine or angle grinder;
  • drill or hammer drill.

A thinner sheet must be cut into two discs, in the center of which holes must be made for the hub. Cut sawtooth waves along the outer edges, with a wave depth of 100 mm. From a denser steel layer, it is necessary to cut triangles with cut corners, weld them perpendicular to the waves. The structure is ready for use.

Of course, such lugs differ in appearance from their counterparts, but they also have many advantages.

What sizes need to be taken

On the Internet, you can find many drawings and diagrams for self-manufacturing lugs. But what sizes correspond to this or that brand? Sometimes this is not indicated in the drawings.

So, the most common cultivators are: Neva, Mole, Salut, Oka, Bison, Centaur. Consider Tillery Neva.

The Neva tiller lugs are perfect for the Salyut and Favorit motor cultivators.
Dimensions for homemade tools for the tiller: height. 34 cm, width. 11 cm. These dimensions are shown in the drawing, and all the small details that must be observed for good work with the ground are indicated. By the way, self-made lugs do a little more than factory ones, because it is difficult to choose the exact size. Sizes for other brands of tillers range from 34 cm to 70 cm and above.

Consider the main functions of lugs on the Tiller Neva:

  • Better plowing of land.
  • The installed tools make the tiller heavier and better to use, which improves soil handling and allows you to work with heavy mounted structures.
  • This product helps to climb a mountain with a full trailer in a fairly short time.
  • Teeth catch small and large plant roots, pulling them out.

Alternative solutions

The thought of folk craftsmen does not stand still. and now they offer an alternative solution: anti-skid bracelets. In principle, these are the same homemade metal chains for wheels, with the only difference being the absence of longitudinal elements. The advantages of bracelets are as follows:

  • ease of manufacture;
  • quick installation;
  • high reliability and efficiency.

So, what is needed for manufacturing:

  • rubber fastening element for the VAZ muffler;
  • metal chain with a diameter of at least 6 mm.

For tires with a width of 195 and 205 mm, you will need about 4 meters of chain. As you can see, the costs are minimal and you only need to cut the material to the required length. Another alternative option. DIY kits for assembling bracelets on wheels using chains, are quite affordable and are of good quality (with the exception of Chinese ones).
The set consists of:

  • chain blanks;
  • fastening accessories;
  • sling;
  • clamping mechanism.

Making the simplest homemade chain for car wheels

  • steel chain with a cross section of at least 5mm;
  • hooks;
  • carabiners with a twist sleeve;
  • tensioning device;
  • bolts, nuts and washers.

The dimensions of the blanks depend on the dimensions of the tire used, so it is important to pre-measure the required indicators. The number of transverse parts is also individual. folk craftsmen recommend doing so that in the plane of contact of the tire with the ground there are two “crossbars” at once. Thanks to this scheme, the traction characteristics and reliability of the entire product will increase. The process of preparatory actions and assembling the chains on wheels with your own hands consists of the following points:

  • cutting of longitudinal blanks;
  • cutting of transverse parts;
  • fixing the cross member on the 6th link of the longitudinal chain;
  • installation of subsequent “crossbars” every 9 links using rings or hooks;
  • in the middle of one longitudinal workpiece, fasten a segment consisting of 6 links and a tensioner with a hook.

As you can see from the description, if you have a certain skill and tool, the operation will take no more than 40 minutes. Those who have experience in welding can apply it in practice and abandon threaded connections, which will certainly affect the quality of the equipment.

Having checked the reliability of the finished product, it remains only to install it on the car.

Installation method without jacking up the machine

Before proceeding with the operation of installing a homemade chain on car wheels, you should carefully lay it down, avoiding twisting of the links. Next, we act on the points:

  • Drive over the product with the drive wheel.
  • Put the car on the hand brake.
  • Put on the chain so that the tensioner with hook and carabiner is on the outside.
  • From the inside, connect the hook and the last link of the longitudinal element.
  • From the outside, put the carabiner sleeve on the tensioning mechanism and fix it.
  • Distribute cross-pieces and stretch.

Mounting the chain on the wheels of a car with your own hands using a jack is similar to the technology described above, its only advantage is to facilitate the task. For a better installation, you must first reduce the tire pressure, but after the operation, do not forget to restore normal parameters. This procedure will allow the product to fit as tightly as possible to the tire.

How to install chains on wheels with your own hands

The anti-skid device is mounted primarily on the drive pair and this is done in two ways:

  • directly on a stationary car;
  • jacking up the right side.

The choice of the method remains with the driver, but it is worth focusing on one recommendation. you need to think about installation in advance, even before entering a difficult-to-pass area. This is the only way to avoid annoying mistakes and save a lot of time.

Improving cross-country ability: self-made chains for wheels from available materials

Any experienced car enthusiast had unpleasant moments when the driving wheels of the car began to slip through mud, ice or deep snow. Often it is almost impossible to get out of such situations on your own. only with the help of another vehicle. What do our colleagues do? Some, after such incidents, buy rubber with spikes, others simply put the car on “joke” during natural disasters. But there is another category of motorists who use homemade chains on wheels and, I must say, quite successfully.

Design and types of anti-skid devices

These devices are based on a simple structure consisting of steel links or reinforced wire. Successful application lies in the even distribution of the elements over the entire radius of the tire. Failure to comply with this condition threatens rupture of the product and loss of anti-skid properties. The classic circuit, tested by generations of motorists, consists of internal and external components that run around the entire circumference of the tire. They are interconnected by transverse parts, the so-called “lugs”. The technology for making a chain on wheels with your own hands is available even to beginners. Depending on the arrangement of structural elements, there are three types of devices:

  • in the form of a ladder;
  • in the form of honeycombs;
  • diamond-shaped.

Each type has its own advantages and disadvantages. In terms of labor costs, the first option is the most accessible. “ladder”.

What to remember

The use of anti-slip chains is not permissible when driving on hard-surfaced roads (concrete, asphalt). In conditions of loose snow or soil, it is recommended to adhere to a speed of 10-20 km / h. Do not allow wheel slip.

After installing the anti-slip device, after driving the first 100 meters, you should stop and check the reliability of its fixation, as well as the tension around the entire perimeter. A loose chain can cause damage to suspension and steering parts.

Types of anti-slip devices

There are soft and hard chains. In soft ones, rubber strips play the role of diameters. In hard. metal links.

Chains in the form of ladders, rhombuses, honeycombs are distinguished behind the type of pattern.

Anti-slip chain design

These products are made from metal wires or chains that are evenly spaced on the car tire. The best option would be a design that consists of two rings. an internal and an external one. They are interconnected by transverse strips.

DIY anti-slip wheel chains

Many drivers face problems on the road during rain, snow, ice or other difficult weather conditions. The number of accidents on the road is increasing significantly. The question arises: whether to leave at all on such days? Of course yes. You just need to protect yourself by making chains on wheels against slipping with your own hands. When using them, you can easily drive even on ice and climb steep slopes. They increase the grip of the car’s wheels on the road.

You can also carry out a classification based on the following characteristics:

  • link size;
  • the material from which the chains are made. steel, aluminum and others;
  • shape and material of cross bars.

To make chains you will need:

  • durable steel chain;
  • a device with which you can tighten the chains;
  • Angle Grinder;
  • hooks;
  • bolts and nuts;
  • snap hooks.

First, measure all the parameters of your tire to know how much material you need to use. The number of cross sections depends on the wheels. It is recommended that two planks touch the ground at once. This will increase grip.

How to make anti-slip wheel chains with your own hands?

If you don’t want to spend money on expensive anti-slip products, you can make your own. This will be a guarantee that they will definitely suit you.

Anti-slip chain manufacturing steps:

  • We cut the longitudinal elements of the chain.
  • We cut parts for diameters.
  • We attach the transverse elements to the longitudinal ones. Place the first cross-section on the sixth link of the chain, and the next on every ninth. You need to do this with hooks.
  • We attach carabiners with a cross section of at least 5 mm to the ends of the longitudinal chains.
  • We attach a small chain in the middle of one of the longitudinal links. Attach a tensioner and a hook to its end.

Authorization on the site

Snow chains are designed to significantly increase the vehicle’s cross-country ability both on ice and in snowy conditions and on other off-road conditions. How to make snow chains with your own hands will be discussed in this article.

Anti-skid chains. Structurally, they are a structure of reinforced wire or chain, tied so that it evenly braids the tire around the entire circumference. This structure consists of two longitudinal cables. external and internal, running around the circumference of the wheel, which are connected by cross members or rubber “lugs”.

snow chains are of 3 types:

tiller, wheel, chains
  • snow chains in the form of a ladder;
  • diamond-shaped snow chains;
  • honeycomb snow chains.
tiller, wheel, chains

Each has its own advantages and disadvantages, but it is easier to make snow chains in the form of a ladder. therefore, we take them as a basis:

Ladder-shaped snow chains consist of longitudinal and transverse branches, tail branches, locking hook, locking hook and locking ring. The connection of the chain elements occurs using connecting rings (Fig. 1)

Manufacturing

Cut 4 pieces of chain with 83 links for longitudinal chains.

We cut 16 pieces of 13 links for cross chains.

We fix the first transverse chain on the 6th link of the longitudinal chains, and all the rest, except for the last one, on every 10th link from the previous one, we fix the last one on the 12th.

We fasten longitudinal links with transverse ones using hooks or rings.

After the 4th transverse chain, we fix a segment of 5 links on one side, and on the ends of both longitudinal links we put on such carabiners with a diameter of 5 mm.

On the side where the segment of 5 links is fixed, we attach the tensioning device to the carabiner.

We attach a hook to its other end.

We put on chains on wheels.

Testing chains on our car.

Materials for making

  • Chain with a rod diameter of 4-5 mm. 15 meters;
  • Hooks. 32 pieces;
  • Stretching device. 2 pieces.

Car mounting

Snow chains are mounted on the drive wheels of the vehicle. The snow chain can be installed in two ways:

without jacking up the car;

jacking up the car.

The installation method is chosen by the driver depending on skills and road conditions. It is advisable to install snow chains before entering a difficult-to-pass section of the road.

1st method. without jacking up the car:

The longitudinal and transverse branches should grip the tire tightly. To remove the tool from the wheel, reverse the order.
