Do-it-yourself car windshield replacement

Replacing the windshield with your own hands will be quite within the power of the average car enthusiast with careful performance of all operations. But many motorists believe that it is possible to replace the windshield only at a specialized service station equipped with professional equipment.

There are many myths and fears regarding the procedure for removing and installing a windshield. Therefore, car owners rarely dare to do their own replacement or reinstallation. However, with the sequential performance of all operations, it will be possible to carry out the replacement efficiently, quickly and with your own hands.

How to remove an old windshield

A clean machine must first be set up in a garage or cubicle on a level surface. The procedure for removing the windshield is as follows:

  • Using a flat screwdriver, you need to remove the rubber seal located on the outside of the car.
  • Wipers, plastic protection, moldings are subject to dismantling.
  • In the cabin, cover the dashboard and front seats with foil to protect them from dust and dirt.
  • The seal is removed from the passenger compartment, and the cards of the front pillars are pushed in the area of the latches and dismantled.
  • Now you need to unscrew the screws and remove the sun visors.
  • Existing sensors and wires that go to the windshield must be disconnected and dismantled.
  • An awl or sharpened wire is used to puncture the sealed seam (old glue).
  • A faceted string is inserted into the puncture, after which handles are attached to its edges. It is more convenient to start cutting the old windshield from the upper left corner.
  • It is more convenient to carry out the work of cutting the adhesive sealant together. One fits comfortably inside the cabin, and the other. from the outside of the machine. The principle of operation is simple, first one person pulls the string, and the other. keeps your site taut. Then the string moves in the opposite direction. In this case, the string shifts along the windshield.
  • In those places of the body where the string can touch the panel or skin, a piece of metal sheet should be placed.
  • When a cut is made around the entire perimeter, the windshield is removed from the car using suction cups.
  • Now you need to clean the body and glass from the old glue (if it will be installed again). This requires a chisel and a solvent.

Everything is clearly shown in the video at the end of the article.

Windshield replacement materials and tools

Before you start replacing the windshield, you need to stock up on the following materials and tools:

  • metal string with 2 handles;
  • awl or pointed wire;
  • suction cups for holding glass;
  • screwdrivers;
  • spanners;
  • chisel;
  • masking tape;
  • adhesive sealant for glass;
  • gun for applying sealant;
  • solvent, primer;
  • tampons and gloves.

To replace glass, you will need a closed and dry room (garage or car box). The car must spend at least one day in it.

To do the job safely and efficiently, you need one or two assistants. Before starting work, the car should be washed (how to wash the car correctly), especially in the area of the windshield.

Why is windshield replacement required?

There are two main reasons that lead to the need to replace the windshield.

  • Moisture penetration from under the seal.
Leakage between the glass and the body is due to the presence of a non-glued area. In the absence of a guarantee, you will have to carry out repairs yourself. Sometimes it is possible to eliminate the leak when a hole is found by filling the gap with a sealant. If you can’t get rid of the leak, you will have to completely re-glue the glass.
  • Windshield damage.
Many motorists have faced such troubles as cracks and chips. They gradually grow, forming a whole “web” on the windshield. In this case, it will not be possible to pass the state technical inspection, and the operation of the vehicle will be unsafe. In the presence of minor damage, it is possible to repair chips and cracks, otherwise the glass must be replaced.

Below we will tell you what tools and materials you need to replace, how to remove the old windshield and install a new one in its place. And at the end of this article, see a detailed video instruction on how to replace a windshield with your own hands according to all the rules.

Windshield installation

Installing a new windshield is done in the following sequence:

  • Before applying glue to the surface of the body and glass, it is necessary to treat the contour with a primer. It will improve the adhesion of the surface to the adhesive.
  • Before applying the glue, it is advisable to warm the tube or balloon with a hairdryer or warm water, then it will be more convenient to apply the sealant to the base.
  • A clean rubber seal is mounted on the glass.
  • The dosing tube is cut at about 20 mm high (5 mm wide).
  • The adhesive can be applied both to the contour of the windshield and to the surface of the body. Most professionals seal glass with sealant. But in the absence of suction cups, it is better to glue the perimeter of the body. It is very important that the sealant bead is continuous. The only joint is made at the bottom in the center.
  • After applying the glue, the windshield must be carefully positioned in the opening. After putting the glass back in place, apply slight pressure to it. then it will adhere tightly to the body, and the sealant will fill all the voids.
  • To prevent the glass from accidentally shifting, it should be fixed with several strips of adhesive tape.
  • After replacing the windshield, you can install plastic protectors, side moldings and wipers.
  • Do not slam doors, trunk and hood to avoid vibrations and displacement of glass.
  • In this position, the car must be left alone for a day. It should be remembered that the higher the air temperature in the garage or box, the faster the adhesive will polymerize. When the room temperature is below 0 degrees, the sealant will not solidify.

The next day, the tape is removed and the windshield and adjacent areas of the body are washed. At this point, you can check the tightness of the resulting seam. If a leak is found, then it is necessary to additionally glue both the inner perimeter and the outer side of the seam. When 100% tightness is achieved, the vehicle can be completely assembled.

With an accurate and consistent implementation of all operations to replace the windshield, the result will delight the car enthusiast. A high-quality do-it-yourself installation often eliminates ridiculous mistakes that even masters in a car service make in a hurry. The main thing. they are not afraid to master new stages of car repair.

Windshield replacement tools and supplies

In order to replace the windshield of a car as quickly and safely as possible with your own hands, you need to stock up on a number of tools and materials. It is impossible to treat glass replacement irresponsibly, it is recommended to make the necessary purchases in advance, because during the glass replacement process, it will not only be very annoying to find out that some part is missing, it will lead to a lot of time costs, which are going to independently replace the car windshield the person is trying to avoid.

Windshield replacement tools

The motorist must have with him:

  • Double-handled metal string.
  • Awl (as a replacement, ordinary, but slightly sharpened wire may be suitable).
  • Special “suction cups” to help hold the glass while detaching or attaching.
  • Various screwdrivers.
  • Wrenches of different sizes.
  • Chisel.
  • Construction knife.
  • Sealant (glue).
  • Sealant gun.
  • Masking tape.
  • Solvent, degreaser, activator.
  • Primer.
  • Cotton swabs and several pairs of gloves.

For all work, it is worth choosing a dry room (a regular garage is quite suitable if, for example, the roof does not leak in it). Before starting the process of replacing the windshield, the car must first spend at least 24 hours in this very room.

This is done in order to stabilize the small temperature difference between that observed in the car’s interior and that which is in the room where the car is stored. If this balance is not achieved, the result can be disastrous. Having started working with a car immediately after it was indoors, a person is very much at risk that the sealant will not bond the groove and the new glass in it well enough, as a result of which this newest windshield may not serve the car owner and half of his normal service life.

When the premises are found, it is worth thinking about helpers. Ideally, this should be 2-3 people. Sometimes, however, one assistant is enough, but this person should be someone who knows at least a little about car repair and can provide full assistance in all aspects of windshield replacement. Next, the car must be thoroughly washed (it is especially worthwhile to work in the area of the windshield), and after all these preparations, you can safely start replacing the glass.

How to install a windshield with your own hands

The process of installing a new windshield is divided into 2 stages. First you need to prepare a place for pasting: get rid of the remnants of the materials used to attach the old windshield and process the groove with all the necessary materials. After that, you need to carefully insert the glass and make sure that, thanks to the sealant, it can reliably adhere to the groove.

Do-it-yourself windshield replacement: step-by-step instructions with photos and videos

If the windshield of a car is damaged, it is customary to seek help from specialists from a car service to replace it. Often people do it automatically, unconsciously realizing that if a breakdown occurs in the car, they can fix everything only in a car service. And few people think that replacing a windshield (according to the experts themselves) is a trifling business that does not require incredible experience in such work and a large investment of time, which almost any person can independently carry out.

How to remove an old windshield

The vehicle must be placed on a flat surface, after which the following steps are performed (as mentioned above, the flat surface must be in a dry room such as a garage or box):

  • First you need to disconnect the wipers and other accessories of the windshield (molding, protective plastic cover).
  • Then, using a flat screwdriver, separate the rubber seal located on the outside of the car.
  • To prevent dust and dirt particles from getting on the seats and panel with devices, these surfaces must be covered with foil or other similar material.
  • Further work continues from the side of the car interior. The plastic side pads located near the front pillars of the machine must be pryed off near the latches, after which they can be easily dismantled.
  • Sunshades are dismantled after all screws have been unscrewed.
  • Next, you need to carefully dismantle the cables and sensors that connect the windshield to the rest of the car systems.
  • The seam must be damaged and pierced with an awl or a previously sharpened piece of wire.
  • It is recommended to puncture in the upper left corner of the windshield. if you insert a faceted string into the existing hole and attach two handles to this string, then it is much easier to cut the old glass from the upper left corner (in general, this procedure can be started from any corner of the windshield).
  • The entire procedure described in paragraph 8 must be performed by two people. One of the assistants is located in the car, the other is outside. The string is pulled by one person, while the other must keep it in its original state. Then this procedure is repeated in the opposite direction, while the string itself moves to the right.
  • If there is a risk that the cut string can damage the interior trim of the car’s interior or the instrument panel, then in these very places of risk, pieces of thin sheets of metal should be placed to protect.
  • When the cutting process is successfully completed, the glass can be easily removed from the old adhesive. Removal can be assisted with the help of special suction cups.

Before starting the installation of a new windshield, all remnants of the old adhesive must be carefully removed

Each of the above points is quite easy to execute, and in the end, without unnecessary problems, will lead to the desired result. You just need to do all the work as carefully as possible. It should be understood that how easy and convenient it will be to install the new windshield depends on how correctly the old windshield is removed. All residues must be cleaned out, it is impossible that even particles of sealant remain from the old glass, otherwise the connection of the new glass with the groove may turn out to be unreliable, which will lead to rapid damage to this instance.

Reasons for replacing the windshield

There are two most common scenarios in which the windshield of a car becomes unusable and needs to be replaced:

  • The seal at the edge of the glass allows moisture to pass through.
  • The windshield was damaged.

In the first case, the reason for the ingress of excess moisture is poor or absent gluing of any part of the glass. If the malfunction was discovered upon completion of the car warranty, then you will have to pay for the repair yourself.

In this case, you should first try to eliminate the leak, and only if this did not work out, you can start replacing the glass. True, the elimination of the leak can only work if the damage to the hermetic layer is insignificant, if it existed for a long time, then it could greatly affect the glass itself, the replacement of which in this case cannot be avoided.

In the second case, a crack or chip can form on the glass for a number of reasons: from ordinary mechanical damage (accident, collision, etc.) to low quality glass that cannot withstand the effects of ordinary external factors: low temperature, high humidity etc.

Crack in the windshield

A characteristic feature of such damage is that cracks can gradually grow into a whole huge web, occupying from 20% to 50-70% of the area of the entire windshield.

Such “cobwebs” can often be seen on cars after minor accidents. While the cracks are still small, you can perform prompt repairs and leave the old windshield. It is important to react in time here, because trying to get rid of a large crack does not bode well. The person will just waste time and some money.

The situation should either be assessed by yourself, or you should ask for advice on whether the windshield is not subject to replacement, but repair, from a car service specialist. Still, an authoritative opinion is never superfluous. But when the cracks become really huge, no one has to doubt the need to replace the windshield, because it is simply impossible to drive a car with such glass safely.

Preparing a place under the windshield

  • Using a construction knife, you need to cut off all the sealant remaining from the old glass. At the same time, the molding loses its performance, but instead of the old molding, you will have to install a new one.
  • Next, you need to try on the glass in the place where it will be installed in the future. If necessary, you can make small marks with a marker. Special stops, which are present on most modern cars and will prevent an inexperienced motorist from installing the windshield in the wrong way, can also help.
  • It is necessary to prepare either a glass stand or a special place on the hood where something soft will be placed in order to minimize the risk of glass damage.
  • Then we put on new moldings on the new windshield.
  • The next step is to degrease the glass groove and the glass itself. The required degreaser can be supplied with the glass or an anti-silicone degreaser can be used.
  • Next, it is necessary to prime the glass at the place of its connection with the groove, as well as the primer of the groove itself, while the sealant remaining from the last time should not be primed. In order not to stain the roof of the car in the primer, part of it is sealed with paper tape, which is removed after the primer.
  • Old sealant can be removed with an activator.

Windshield installation

  • The first step is to apply a new sealant. This is a very important procedure and should be done very carefully. The strip of sealant should be solid and as uniform as possible. To achieve the desired effect, it is worth using either a professional hand pistol or a pneumatic pistol (a more reliable option for beginners).
  • In accordance with the marks set earlier, we apply glass. Now you need to carefully walk your fingers around the perimeter of the entire windshield. Its surface should be in perfect contact with the groove. If for some reason in some places the sealant creeps out a little, you should not rush to remove it. This can be done at any time after the polymerization process has been completed. Thanks to the film, excess sealant can be removed in a few minutes.
  • Further, everything is fixed as carefully as possible with scotch tape. The sequence is not so important, but it is recommended to first sculpt an adhesive tape around the perimeter of the glass, and only after that connect it to the body with a “brace”. At this point, the process can be considered complete.

It is important to ensure that the air temperature is not below zero or above 25-30 degrees. In the first case, the sealant may simply not seize, and in the second it polymerizes too quickly. As a result, not in the first, nor in the second case, the sealant will not be able to fasten the windshield and the corresponding groove in the necessary way. Also, the car should be “left alone” for a while: do not open or close the doors, do not try to move it. It is necessary to give the sealant time to “grab”, only in this case the result will be 100% perfect.

If it suddenly happened that the windshield of the motorist’s car was damaged in one way or another, he should not be upset and count the money that needs to be allocated for the services of car service specialists. All the work can really be done independently, and it does not require a lot of time and nerves, and does not imply that the motorist has experience of such work. It is enough just to stock up on a couple of assistants, all the necessary material and tools, and you can get to work. The main thing is to adhere to the plan and rules of work, to show accuracy and some meticulousness. If you approach work responsibly, then the result will definitely be no worse than in even a very good car service.

How to remove a crack on a car windshield on your own

Almost every driver has at least once faced such a problem as a crack in the windshield. To some, this may seem like a trifle, but defects in the glass significantly spoil the mood and can even interfere with the maintenance. How to easily get rid of a crack and avoid an expensive replacement of all glass. see our review.

Cracks and chips on the windshield are another headache for the car owner. Unlike the side ones, it consists of several layers and is therefore very expensive. In addition, through the “broken” windshield, visibility is significantly impaired. Fortunately, there is an easy way to get rid of small cracks. And something from a women’s cosmetic bag will help with this.

Local windshield repair is a procedure that every driver can do with his own hands. It is best to restore glass in summer, in dry warm weather.

First you need to thoroughly wash the surface. In this case, we use a special detergent, and then wipe the glass with a clean cloth.

Next, degrease the surface with acetone, alcohol or solvent. The liquid is best applied with a synthetic cloth, it will not leave lint. If possible, remove dust and water from the crack. This will give the best end result.

When the glass is dry, apply transparent nail polish with thin strokes. Fill the entire volume of a chip or crack with a brush.

Next, use the blade to remove the remaining varnish. This is best done while the liquid is still fresh. For the varnish to harden, wait 5-15 minutes, depending on the thickness of the layer. The resulting hardened layer can be polished to obtain a neat, smooth surface.

Further, the whole process is repeated on the other side of the glass, from the salon.

Despite its apparent simplicity, this method is very effective. Even if the crack cannot be completely eliminated with nail polish, its further propagation stops.

Drivers with hands can still fix a lot in their car. Surely they will love 5 practical ways to increase the power of any car.

Polishing process

First, wash the glass thoroughly. Remember that even a small amount of sand on the glass will lead to new scratches. Then a small amount of special paste is applied to the polishing wheel. And the circle itself and the paste should be wet.

Glass polishing is carried out in a small area, with the subsequent transition further. During the transition, a small part of the already processed surface is captured. This will help you to avoid gaps. Don’t press too hard. The ideal angle of inclination of the disc in relation to the glass is no more than 5 degrees. If the movement of the circle becomes heavier, spray the glass with water. This will prevent overheating of its surface. In addition, the drying paste will begin to scratch the glass.

But don’t overdo it with water. Its excessive amount of work of an abrasive substance is minimized. When polishing, you need to stop periodically. The remains of the paste are removed from the treated area. Then a visual inspection is carried out from several sides. This way you will know if the area still needs to be polished. Do not use equipment with too high speed. The best option is considered to be up to 1700 rpm. Small video.

The whole process will require certain skills from you and on average will take about 4 hours of your time.

What else can you polish

Some drivers prefer to polish the glass with sandpaper in the old fashioned way. The main thing to consider here is that the more serious the scratch, the larger the grain should be. The whole process is carried out by hand with periodic wetting of the glass. Then you need to polish the glass with paste. In this case, it is best to use diamond paste.

However, it is worth noting that often many owners simply scratch the glass of the car with “sandpaper” and it can no longer be fixed! So if this method is conceived, you need to be extremely careful! Perhaps practice on a small area of the windshield first.

If you were unable to purchase a special polish, then you can use the usual GOI paste. Sunflower (or machine) oil should be added to it and, stirring, heat.

You can also use pastes such as “Polarit” (with cerium oxide) or “Crocus” (with iron oxide) known from Soviet times.

Things to Consider

Pay attention to the force with which you press the polishing wheel while working. The strength should always be the same. Otherwise, the glass may crack from sudden overheating, in principle, therefore, the glass is poured with water.

When the pressure is released, vibration is generated, which can lead to defects. Never grind the side windows of your car. This will lead to their complete destruction. The maximum is light polishing. When grinding the windshield, it is forbidden to remove a layer of more than 20 microns. Otherwise, the glass will be covered with waves during operation. Driving a car with such glass is likely to end in an accident.

DIY windshield polishing. In different ways with GOI paste

A frequently asked question. is it possible to polish the windshield with your own hands? Has a specific answer. Not only possible, but also extremely necessary. During operation, the windshield, under the influence of sand (small stones) flying from the road or poor-quality wiper brushes, becomes covered with a network of small scratches. They may be invisible at first glance, but in the light of the headlights of oncoming cars, they are clearly visible. Highlights from scratches not only harm the driver’s eyesight. They can cause accidents. But keep in mind that glass polishing will not help you get rid of cracks and chips. Also, to remove serious scratches, the glass needs to be sanded. In this case, polishing is carried out only at the end of all work.

Do-it-yourself windshield polishing has several nuances. But, in fact, it is not difficult to produce it. To begin with, the workplace and the car itself are prepared. It is better to cover the car with a film, then you do not have to wash it after polishing the glass. It is also better to cover the garage walls with something. There will be a lot of splashes, but no one wants to wash the garage either. You can paste over the windshield around the perimeter with simple masking tape. It is possible not to polish the entire surface, but to designate from the inside that area of the glass that needs processing. This will save you time and money. By the way, I advise you to read the article. how to remove scratches from the car body.

Required inventory

Ideally, you need a dedicated polisher. However, if one is not available, then a simple electric drill can perfectly cope with this task. Just get a special attachment for a felt (or better felt) polishing wheel. Stock up on clean wipes and a soft cloth. You will also need a sprinkler. In addition, purchase a fine-grained paste intended for polishing car windows in advance.

After all work has been done, the glass is thoroughly washed. Don’t expect miracles from the polishing procedure. It helps to get rid of only small scratches, since in the process a layer of glass is removed no more than 1 micron.

If there are serious defects, then polishing the windshield with your own hands will not help. You will have to contact a special service.

But polishing does an excellent job with the characteristic arc-shaped scratches from the wipers. The main thing is to stock up on a good tool and patience.

Application of tinting film to the rear window of a car

The process for cleaning the rear window of a car is slightly different, as it has heating threads and you need to be very careful not to damage them. It is also recommended to use a plastic spatula instead of a scraper.

  • After cleaning, the glass must be washed with a hard sponge, wiped dry with a hard distillation and wiped with a napkin around the perimeter.
  • Before applying the tinting film, moisten the glass abundantly with the solution, while covering the rear shelf with rags or some other handy material so as not to flood the car’s electrical equipment with water.

To stick the tint film on the rear window, it is better to resort to the services of an assistant.

  • When removing the liner, immediately moisten the exposed adhesive layer with a water and soap solution.
  • Carefully, without touching the glue layer of foreign objects, bring the workpiece onto the glass. this is a very responsible operation and requires a certain skill.
  • Try to prevent the film from curling, kinking or bending.

With an adhesive layer, the pattern should only touch the treated glass surface and, in no case, neither the interior parts of the car, nor the clothes of the installer.

Align the pattern on the glass so that there are no gaps, and begin to smooth it using a rubber forcing.

When tinting the rear window, smooth the film from the center to the edges so that no air or water bubbles remain under it. Use a plastic spatula in hard-to-reach places.

  • Next, moisten the tint film and squeeze out the remaining solution from under it using a hard distillation.
  • Extrude along the heating filaments. from center to edges.
  • Then do this operation by hard distillation, but already wrapped in a napkin.

The final stage is pressing the tint film around the perimeter by distillation, while heating the glass from the outside with a hair dryer.

Be careful not to overheat the glass with a hair dryer. it may break!

Application of a film for tinting on the side windows of the car

Moisten the surface of the side window and use a scraper to clean the bottom of the glass. Then lower the glass a few centimeters, moisten and also scrub the rest of the surface with a scraper.

Clean the surface with the razor consistently and make sure there are no uncleaned areas.

Next, wash the glass with a hard sponge and wipe dry with a rubber forcing. Wipe the edges of the glass with a napkin. Moisten and wipe the glass again with a rubber wiper.

  • Moisten the glass liberally before applying the tinting film.
  • Then it is necessary to remove the liner protecting the adhesive layer from the workpiece by two-thirds and moisten the adhesive surface. It is convenient to carry out this operation on the rear window of the car, attaching the pattern with an adhesive layer outward.
  • It is better to cut off the excess liner removed from the workpiece before applying the tint film.

Wet your fingers. Keep your fingertips clean, as you will need to touch the adhesive layer of the film while tinting the glass.

Gently take the workpiece and place it on the prepared glass surface.

Try to ensure that the adhesive layer touches only the glass surface and does not touch the seals and other surfaces.

Align the tinting film with the top edge. Make sure that there are no gaps or gaps anywhere, and begin to gently squeeze the solution out from under it.

Follow a few simple rules:

  • Hold the pattern with your hand, as during the initial squeezing out of the liquid, the workpiece will slide on the glass.
  • Squeeze out water from the center to the edges.
  • Use a rubber and then hard forcing. Drive the liquid hard in the same directions. from the middle to the edges.
  • Then, using a forcing machine and a hair dryer, fix the film at the top edge of the glass.
  • After that, using a knife, remove excess tint film protruding onto the upper edge of the glass. this technology allows you to leave no gaps along the upper edge.

Lift up the glass. Fold back the bottom of the pattern protected by the liner and moisten the glass liberally with the solution. Remove the liner completely.

Do this very carefully and make sure that the film without a liner does not touch anything except glass with its glue layer.!

Carefully tuck the tint film under the glass seal. Squeeze out the horizontal inner seal using forcing and, when filling the tinting film, make sure that it does not break. this operation also requires certain skills, so be especially careful (note how the master will carry out this operation in the video tutorial below).

  • Squeeze the solution out from under the film using a hard distillation: squeeze the water in successive movements from top to bottom and from the middle to the edges.
  • Finally remove the remaining moisture using a distillation wrapped in a napkin and a hair dryer.
  • Make sure there are no water bubbles under the film during toning.

The technology for cleaning and sticking small blind glasses will be identical.

Materials and tools for car glass tinting

In the process of self-tinting car windows, you will need the following tools:

  • Spray,
  • Soft and hard distillation,
  • Paper napkins,
  • Sponge,
  • Scraper,
  • Ruler,
  • Knife,
  • Hair dryer.

To work with the tint film, use a water-soap solution prepared in the following proportion: for 1.5 liters of water, 5 drops of washing shampoo. Mix the solution thoroughly (you can use the container of your sprayer for this).

Before starting tinting, you should thoroughly clean the outside of the glass using the prepared soap and water solution.

Pattern of a film for tinting side windows of a car

Before you start tinting the windows of the car, you must make a pattern of the tint film.

To do this, you need to determine where the adhesive layer is located. it is protected by a transparent liner. Always cut the film along the roll and make sure that the piece to be cut is a few centimeters larger than the glass.

  • Moisten the outside of the glass and place the previously cut piece of tinting material on it with the liner towards you. The lower part of the film should be parallel to the outer horizontal window seal and overlap it by about one centimeter.
  • Using forcing and a knife, make side vertical cuts in the film so that after that you can throw the pattern onto the vertical seal by about one centimeter.
  • Next, bending the lower part of the pattern, lower the glass a little and, securing the film along the upper edge of the glass, make a horizontal cut in it, and then give it the final shape.

A blank for tinted glass is cut out so that it is several millimeters larger than the transparent area of the glass.

  • Pre-fix the film from the outside on a damp glass surface.
  • Cut out the workpiece carefully and slowly.
  • If the transparent area is limited by the sealant, then cut along the seal should be applied by forcing.

Be careful not to damage the exterior of the car with a knife!

  • For convenience, try to remove excess pieces of the pattern immediately after the cut.
  • If the transparent area is limited by an opaque strip of paint, then a cut should be made so that it goes over the opaque part by a few millimeters.

Be sure to keep the knife blade always sharp (break off dull parts of the blade in time).

Below we have prepared for you step-by-step instructions for tinting car windows: from choosing a tint film to sticking a reflective strip on the windshield.

Choosing a film for tinting car windows

The tint film market is so large that for its review we wrote a separate article about films for car window tint.

We do not recommend buying cheap Chinese DIY kits, instead we recommend purchasing only high-quality roll film for window tinting.

Also, heed the recommendations of sellers who sell tint films. You can also purchase all the tools necessary for tinting windows from them.

Still, it’s better to see once than hear a hundred times. Therefore, we suggest watching a video tutorial on tinting car windows with your own hands, which is located at the bottom of this article.

And for better assimilation of the material, all stages of self-tinting glass are described below and can be used as a cheat sheet.

Rear window tinting film pattern

The pattern of the tint film for the rear window of a car has some peculiarities due to its spherical surface.

  • The outer surface of the glass and the tinting film must be completely dry before cutting.
  • The letter “H” is drawn on the glass surface with a wet sponge, and the tint film is rolled out along the roll with an adhesive layer outward. Our workpiece must be larger than the transparent area of the glass.
  • The remaining tinting material together with the roll must be carefully removed. For this, it is better to resort to the services of an assistant.
  • After that, place the workpiece on the outside of the rear window so that there are no horizontal folds, but only vertical ones.
  • Smooth the film with the letter “H”, as the glass has a spherical surface.

Wrinkles on the tint film must be smoothed out with a hair dryer. Be careful not to overheat it, and only vertical folds can be heated.!

  • After removing all wrinkles, dampen the glass and film and gently smooth the pattern. As a result, it should take the form of glass without wrinkles.
  • Smooth the workpiece from the center of the glass to its edges, both vertically and horizontally.

Do this operation carefully using forcing. Make sure that the film is not wrinkled during tinting, but evenly smoothed over the glass surface.

The next step in toning is to precisely trim the film. In this case, it is recommended to use a spotlight to illuminate the interior of the car, and the trim line should go a few millimeters onto the opaque area of the glass (see the video below).

Sticking a reflective strip on the windshield

The tint strip must be cut along the roll with a small margin. Then moisten the glass surface and place your workpiece on it with an adhesive layer outward.

Make cuts along the seals and remove excess tinting film.

Remember to only use special blades that will not scratch the glass!

  • Smooth out the pattern so that there are no horizontal folds. only vertical ones.
  • Then use a hair dryer and forcing to warm up and smooth the vertical folds.

The windshield is afraid of temperature extremes, so do not abruptly heat or cool it!

  • Moisten the workpiece, fold it in half and smooth it gently so that there are no folds or wrinkles.
  • Then, using a ruler and a knife, make serifs at a distance of 10-12 centimeters from the top edge of the pattern.

Make serifs as often as possible. With this method, you can make a reflective strip of any width. The width will depend on how far from the edge you make the serifs.

  • Then remove the excess tint film.
  • Then spread out the pattern to its full length and use a ruler to cut the serifs between each other (this process is clearly shown in the training video below).

When working with a film in the process of tinting glass, put it with an adhesive layer and a liner on you.

  • After that, place the resulting workpiece again on the damp windshield outside.
  • Moisten and smoothen the pattern, and use the light from the inside to trim it accurately.

To avoid gaps after sticking the tint film, make a cut in such a way that the film goes over the opaque area of the glass by a few millimeters.

Clean the glass and apply the tinting film from the inside in the same way as in the previous cases.
