Do-it-yourself wood splitter from tiller
The specifics of the wood splitter
The wood splitter to the tiller is an attachment that can be combined with all heavy models of units. It is often installed on Tilleri Neva, Zubr, Agro and others. There are only two restrictions on the use of this nozzle:
- The motor must be water-cooled;
- Minimum power from 8 liters. from.
The equipment has a standard design:
- the presence of a powerful metal cone with a screw thread and a thin sharp tip on the bed;
- the nozzle moves due to the belt from the power take-off shaft. After switching on, the rotation of the shaft begins, the cone is screwed into the log and divides it. Before starting work, the tree must be held until the shaft is completely screwed into the wood;
- the presence of an adjustable table for ready-made firewood.
The logs are split with a special threaded cone. It easily enters wood fibers, tearing them apart. So the logs are split in half. The log splitter is easy to use, mobile, highly reliable and fast.
Screw wood splitter
- attach a gearbox and a motor to the bed;
- fit the shaft onto the cone;
- the shaft is connected to the reduction gear by means of a motor.
When assembling, important points are taken into account:
- the nozzle is not attached directly to the engine for safety reasons;
- without the presence of certain skills, all work on the part of electricity should be entrusted to a specialist;
- chain and belt drives must be protected with a special casing;
- the cleaver should rotate at a minimum speed of 250-300 rpm.
Tiller log splitter
Modern tillers allow you to perform all kinds of work, not only for plowing the land.
Harvesting firewood in winter is a difficult job that requires a lot of effort and time. To facilitate the process, you can use a tiller wood splitter.
How to make a wood splitter from a tiller with your own hands?
No special skills are required to develop this equipment. To make a wood splitter with a tiller engine, you need to prepare a steel blank and a lathe.
To make a cone log splitter, you need to acquire:
- cone, electric motor;
- drive chain or passes;
- bolt or pin;
- supports for the shaft (you can use the gimbal supports of the Zhiguli).
When manufacturing equipment, the following nuances must be observed:
- the cone tiller must be powerful enough to handle the tough job. Optimally, if the engine has 8 liters. from.;
- it is important to strictly follow the safety rules. You cannot push small logs with force, so as not to injure yourself;
- due to its design, the wood splitter can handle any kind of firewood. In this case, the log should be up to 45 centimeters in diameter.
Mechanical wood splitter
- the frame is made of durable material;
- the frame should be installed on a chassis or wheels to be able to transport equipment;
- hydraulics are attached to the frame (hydraulic cylinder, oil tank, motor for the pump and the pump itself, a unit for fluid control).
When making a homemade hydraulic wood splitter, you need to think about the feasibility of such a mechanism. It can be extremely disadvantageous economically.
The log splitter from the tiller must be equipped with a support table for storing firewood. Table legs must be adjusted to the height of the unit.
Mounted log splitters on a tiller are practical devices that do not take up much space, are distinguished by their simple operation, and do not require large financial costs.
Before creating, you should read the detailed video instruction.
Do-it-yourself tiller dumper
From plywood 10 mm thick I made a bunker for the transportation of bulk cargo. Its size and shape may vary. I made a container with dimensions in the upper part of 70 “90 cm, so that the trolley could freely pass through the doorway of 80 cm. I connected the plywood sheets together with self-tapping screws using plastic corners. Reliably, quickly and easily.
To attach the plywood bin to the front of the trolley frame, I welded regular door hinges. The result is a small dump truck: due to the displacement of part of the load forward relative to the hinges, you do not have to exert much effort during unloading.
This self-propelled cart turned out to be very convenient on the farm. We transported gravel and sand on it, making almost no effort to drag or push the unit. Thanks to the front caster wheels, the control is not at all difficult, the dumper rides on a flat surface without human intervention.
A video about this self-propelled wheelbarrow can be viewed on my starikxo YouTube channel.
For such an assistant, I think this is not so much, considering that the snow blower is idle in the barn or garage all summer, only taking up space.
Those who created the Tilleri had no idea what their craftsmen could transform them into. And the latter did their best: from ordinary tillers they were able to make not only ATVs, but even snowmobiles and tricycles.
This design serves to make it possible to move comfortably in the snow. This will require wide enough wheels. The caterpillar can be retrieved from an old snowmobile. She will be able to fit under the wheels of the tiller. The snowmobile itself is made from a frame, tracks, some suspension elements. The mount can be used from the tiller. This makes an excellent snowmobile, which is also suitable for hunting in the swamps. Therefore, the result is both a swamp vehicle and a snowmobile.
FRAME FOR BODY
From a metal profile pipe with a cross section of 20 40 mm, I made a rectangular frame with dimensions of 450 x 600 mm. On one side of the frame, I fixed caster wheels with a diameter of 250 mm, on the opposite side I welded plates with holes for attachment to the chassis of the snow blower.
The bogie frame was connected to the undercarriage of the snow blower using six bolts with nuts that were used to attach the snow thrower.
How can you make an ATV and a tricycle?
If we talk about an ATV, then it is important to know that this is a fairly powerful four-wheeled motorcycle. It has a high speed, and you can drive such a unit anywhere. One of the most important parts in it is the motor. That is why ATVs and tricycles, converted from tilers, have shown themselves perfectly. For this, you can use any model, however, motors from the “Neva” are best suited.
In order to make such devices with your own hands, you do not need to redo the tiller especially. The only thing you need to get or do yourself is the drawings. After that, you can proceed to the alteration itself.
The work can be divided into several stages:
- first you need to expand the wheels;
- further. you need to install more powerful wheels;
- after that, you should deal with the frame.
After that, you can start altering the frame. For an ATV or tricycle, you can take a frame from a bike or motorcycle. If it is not there, then any cuttings from water pipes may do. You can attach such a frame with two pins, using a pivot hinge for this.
Then you can start installing the wheels. First, you need to determine which disks you can use. Discs taken from a car will work best. It is necessary to take rubber with a low profile so that it fits more tightly to the discs themselves.
By altering the tiller in this way, as a result, you can get a wonderful device that can move on any road, and the costs will be quite small.
Other rework options
In addition, it will also be possible to make other technique out of the tiller. For example, you can get a dumper, pneumatic drive or vibrating plate. Also, some craftsmen make a loader or snowmobile from a tiller. Many people use tillers to harvest corn.
We make a wood splitter
Among other things, a log splitter can be made from a tiller. To do this, you need to carve a cone on a special machine, as well as a thread. After that, the already finished cone must be mounted on a shaft that has suitable bearings. Then, on the end of the shaft, you need to install a flange, as well as an asterisk. It can be taken from a motorcycle wheel.
The cone can be fixed to the shaft with a bolt. After that, a spacer made of pipes, as well as a pair of nuts, must be installed between the motor and the shaft itself. This will help tighten the chain. In order to make supports for the shaft, you can take supports from the Zhiguli. The motor must be taken from the tiller. With this redesigned structure, you can easily cope with the splitting of firewood.
How to make a wood splitter with your own hands from a tiller
tiller is already a familiar technique for residents of private houses. He is able to significantly simplify life, help in the cultivation of the garden and not only. This is a versatile technique that allows you to endlessly expand the scope of its application due to interchangeable attachments. Recently, a wood splitter for a tiller has gained popularity. This convenient and quite inexpensive unit will save a lot of time and health, save you from hard and boring work.
Harvesting firewood seems easy only at first glance. To chop wood, you need to have considerable strength and endurance. And winter always comes and does not look at age and the availability of strength and ability to prepare firewood for a boiler, stove or fireplace. The wood splitter to the tiller is a simple and convenient device that even a teenager can handle.
Principle of operation
It is not for nothing that they say that all ingenious is simple. This fully characterizes the principle of operation of a wood splitter from a tiller. This is an attachment that can be attached to the tiller very easily. The wood splitters are compatible with all heavy tiller models and some light ones. Most often they use a wood splitter on the Tiller Neva. But it can be used with other models as well. There are only two restrictions: the tiller engine must be water-cooled and its power must be at least 8 liters. from.
Its design allows you to split firewood of any species. The only limitation is that the diameter of the log should be no more than 45 cm.
Firewood is split using a powerful metal cone with a screw thread. It easily enters between the wood fibers and tears them apart. This causes the log to split in half.
A log splitter from a tiller always has the same design, it may differ in some details, but the principle of operation will remain the same. What does he look like? A powerful metal cone with a screw thread and a thin sharp tip is installed on the bed. It is driven by a power take-off shaft using a belt. When turned on, the shaft begins to rotate, screwing into the log and dividing it into two parts. At the very beginning, the log must be held so that the shaft can be screwed into the log. Then you can only control the process and remove the chopped firewood. The wood splitter has a small adjustable table where ready-made firewood falls.
- Ease of use
- Work speed
- High equipment reliability
Features of operation
Like any technique, a cleaver to a tiller (this is also called a wood splitter), requires mandatory compliance with safety standards. The shaft of the tiller wood splitter rotates quite quickly (about 500 rpm), has a thread and a sharp tip. Failure to observe safety precautions can result in serious injury.
Therefore, when starting to chop wood, you should follow these simple rules:
- Before starting work, it is necessary to check the belt tension, the fastening of the cone and all the bolts. If necessary, adjust their tension. You also need to control this in the process of work.
- Use protective eyewear.
- Shoes should be stiff, able to protect if the log falls on the leg.
- Do not chop wood in mittens, because with the slightest carelessness, a mitten or glove can be wound around the shaft with your hand.
- Work clothes should not dangle freely.
- When working with the log splitter, keep your hands as far away from the shaft and from the cracks that form on the log as possible, as this can lead to injuries.
Making a wood splitter yourself
As already mentioned, the design of such a unit is quite simple, if desired and the technical capabilities are available, it is quite possible to make a wood splitter for a tiller with your own hands.
To do this, you need to find a steel bar of a suitable size, an electric motor, a belt or drive chain, bolts, bearings, a shaft.
If all this is assembled, it is quite possible to build a log splitter from a tiller with your own hands.
You will need access to a lathe in order to make a cone from a blank and cut a left-hand thrust thread on it. After that, you can start assembling your wood splitter.
Owners of private houses have different approaches to the organization of heat supply. Some install gas convectors, others use electrical heat supply systems, and still others equip autonomous boiler rooms. At the same time, for many people, stove heating and firewood as fuel remain the only option. Logging in this case is a responsible process. It is very time consuming, but it can be really simplified. One of these is to make a log splitter from a tiller, if the latter is available to you.
We are talking about attachments. Components of this type for the tiller are on sale. it is enough to find a reliable company that supplies them. But if you have the skills of a mechanic, you probably won’t have much difficulty making one yourself. Of course, by making a wood splitter from a tiller with your own hands, you save money on organizing the heat supply. Firstly, home-made equipment is cheaper than new equipment, and secondly, firewood, for the preparation of which a wood splitter is used, remains one of the most budgetary types of fuel intended for heating houses. Your task is only to take a responsible approach to the process.
When preparing drawings for making a wood splitter for a tiller, remember that its dimensions should not go beyond the standard limits. they are 850x400x600 mm. In addition, indicators such as are important:
- the diameter of the screw that acts as a cleaver. 8 cm;
- screw length. 28 cm;
- the length of the smooth neck of the cone is 9 cm;
- the length of the sharpened part of the cone, equipped with a thread. 19 cm;
- threaded pitch. must be within 7–8 mm;
- the distance on the metal surface between the screw and the cleaver is no more than 0.9 m, as this will simplify the control of the structure and give it the necessary rigidity.
When drilling the bore for the cone, make sure that its diameter is 34.85 mm. Minor discrepancies are possible downwards, but not upwards! The taper fit must be keyed. In this case, it should be equipped with a ten-millimeter groove.
When installing a cone with a cleaver, you must provide for the possibility of emergency removal. This must be done to clean wood chips that get inside during the operation. If you do not remove it, the log splitter will not be able to work, and you will have to spend a lot of time on restoration. Correct positioning of the cone will help prevent such downtime: it should be removed and installed quickly and easily.
In order for the wood splitter that you plan to connect to the tiller to work smoothly, it is necessary to bring its design as close as possible to industrial designs. For this purpose, two notches are made on the cylindrical neck of the cone. One is located next to the seat. It has a very important purpose. to prevent displacement of the bolt axis and its pressing onto the motor shaft. The second notch performs the function of protection for the thread, prevents its damage. This happens by pressing the cone off the shaft.
In the process of working on a wood splitter for a tiller, it is necessary to correctly observe the inclined angle of the cone. This affects the performance capabilities of the device. The angle of inclination depends on the type of cone. There are tabular data on the Internet that will help you determine the proportions.
DIY Kindling Cracker / Log Splitter from Rebar
The width of the support post of the wood splitter from the tiller must be at least 450 mm. For its manufacture, instead of steel, the use of cast iron is allowed. The motor is placed on the lower beams of the wood splitter, under the work table (while the fixing screw is installed on the work table). The splitting screw should not be located higher than 20 cm from the table top. Its severity can cause the structure to topple over and injure people in the vicinity.
Before building a plan on how to make a log splitter from a tiller, it is necessary to conduct an excursion into the technology. There are many classifications of such attachments according to various criteria, one of which is the principle of operation. Based on this fact, the wood splitters installed on the tiller are divided into:
The first two types from this list can work independently of the tiller. There are other classifications of wood splitters. For example, they are classified as mobile and stationary. The first type is characterized by small dimensions, it is not intended for large volumes of work and is easily transported. Stationary ones, on the contrary, are made in the form of massive machines. Their task is to procure very large quantities of firewood. They are not intended for domestic use, they are installed in specialized enterprises that work with wood.
Another classification that is important for those who are directly involved in the preparation of firewood is the direction of supply of the block. Based on this characteristic, wood splitters are divided into:
- Vertical. In this configuration, the feed of the cutter is from top to bottom. These types of wood splitters are also called mounted.
- Horizontal. The basis of such wood splitters is a flat platform (work table). A splitting lance is placed on it, to which the log is fed.
- Mixed. Such devices allow for multi-position harvesting of firewood.
Despite the many varieties, for domestic use, the principle of operation is still a key factor. Based on this feature, we will consider which type of wood splitter is optimal for your tiller.
Simplicity and efficiency
- Install a metal post in the ground and fix it with concrete. She will serve as a support. Its reliable fixation allows the device to withstand the additional load when it is forced to change its position.
- Install the horizontal beam. It is attached to a support, connected by a hinge and a spring that acts as a return mechanism.
- On the horizontal part, place the cutting mechanism and weighting agent for splitting efficiency. The log splits as a result of the action on the lever, and the spring returns the device to its original state.
It is advisable to install such equipment at the place where firewood is split.
The spring-type mechanical wood splitter is distinguished by its simplicity of design and speed of manufacture. At the same time, it demonstrates a fairly high productivity, if we are not talking about large quantities of workpieces.
Already from the name it is clear that its main structural element is the spring. One end of it is installed on a special horizontal platform. the bed, and the other. rests on the rail containing the cleaver. Also included in the design is a lever. With its help, a mechanical effect is exerted on the tree. During the manufacturing process, it is necessary to provide a movable connection of the lever and the horizontal beam with the cleaver.
Where to start manufacturing
Screw wood splitters are most commonly used in households, and since they are powered by a tiller engine, they are much more efficient than purely mechanical models. Using their example, we will consider the main stages of manufacturing, when planning which, you need to remember the prerequisites:
- A homemade wood splitter is installed only on tillers equipped with high power engines. The minimum “bar” for this indicator is 6.5 l / s. In addition to MTZ, Tillery “Neva”, “Zirka”, “Centaur” are very good for this purpose.
- The motor must be equipped with a water cooling system. Thanks to it, you can avoid overheating and motor failure.
- The tiller’s PTO must be equipped with a belt drive.
- For the manufacture of all structural parts of the wood splitter and fasteners, select only durable materials that are resistant to wear. For this purpose, sheet steel with a thickness of 5-6 mm is excellent.
Before proceeding with the direct manufacture of a wood splitter from a tiller, it is necessary to carefully work out the drawings. There are a huge number of them on the Internet, but if you have an exclusive model in your project, it is advisable to consult with specialists at the time of development.
Homemade screw and cone wood splitters are the most popular of those that are mounted on tillery. Let’s consider them in more detail. On tapered tillers, the main working element is the tapered part. It itself is turned on a lathe and has a screw thread on it. The cone of the wood splitter is installed on the rotary shaft powered by the tiller engine. The engine itself can be either gasoline or diesel, its optimal speed is from 500 rpm.
To attach the engine to the cone log splitter, you must first disconnect it from the tiller system. Then it is fixed on the wood splitter frame. At this time, the cone and rotary shaft are installed in a bore specially provided for them. The engine and shaft are fixed with a chain, and this is done without fail. It is important after all assembly work to make sure that the connections are secure.
Tiller’s screw log splitter is similar in principle to a conical one. Only the main part, unlike the previous example, is made with a threaded thread. This feature determines the principle of operation. It consists in the fact that the processed log is wound on a screw with sharp points, under the influence of which it splits.
There are two more popular modifications. This wood splitter is hydraulically driven by a tiller and rack and pinion. The first type demonstrates high power and, accordingly, the speed of material processing. A rack-and-pinion log splitter differs from a hydraulic one in that its operation is provided by a gear drive. It is a cheaper alternative to the hydraulic system. In view of certain technological nuances, it is difficult to independently manufacture these types of wood splitters. At the same time, if you deem it necessary to use just such configurations, then contact the professionals. Specialized service centers have all the conditions and equipment for their production.
