Electric Chain Saw How To Use

How to choose a household electric chain saw

The modern consumer today has the opportunity to purchase any electric chain saw that meets his needs, since the market offers many models with different characteristics. Naturally, you should not rely only on the brand and recommendations of friends. It is very important to correlate your choice with the tasks that the saws must perform. Considerable help in choosing you can be provided by the recommendations of professionals.

electric, chain

This article will focus on electrical devices. Once you know what technical characteristics these units have, it will not be difficult for you to understand how to choose a chain saw so that it will serve you for many years.

Chain saw device and working principle

Among the entire range of chain saws, the following can be distinguished: with an electric drive and a gasoline engine. Considering the device of a chain saw, the following main elements can be distinguished in it:

  • body;
  • electric motor;
  • chain;
  • guide rails;
  • compartment for the oil pump and the oil itself;
  • protective screen, chain brake lever;
  • bar fixing screw and chain tension.

The saw body serves as a panel for buttons that control the inclusion and locking of the tool. There is also a comfortable handle and a protective shield. Some differences are found in more modern and improved models, in which you can find a special handle that allows you to control the degree of chain tension.

This tool works as follows: the first action is to start the engine, as a result of which a torque is created that spreads to the gearbox, sprocket and chain, and this leads to the rotation of these elements, thereby starting the sawing process.

Take into account that the chain, equipped with cutting edges, has a wider width compared to a stationary bar, during the operation of the tool, the risk of jamming in the work material is excluded.

In the process of sawing with a saw, oil enters the cutting surface of the chain from the container located in the body, which ensures its lubrication.

Having become familiar with the principle of operation of an electric chain saw, you can proceed to consider the main parameters that need to be considered when choosing this tool.

Chain brake

When working with an electric saw, the owner may encounter such a phenomenon as kickback, which occurs as a result of the contact of the working part with a material of high hardness. All this leads to the fact that the saw sharply leans towards the location of the worker with an upward shift.

All this creates a threat of injury to the worker’s hands. To avoid negative consequences, manufacturers use a special device. a chain brake.

In its execution, it looks like a lever in the form of a disk, which is located directly in front of the handle. During the kickback, the worker, unwillingly, moves his left hand mechanically to this lever, and this leads to the shutdown of the electric motor. In practice, all this happens in a very short time. about 0.1 seconds.

Saw motor and power

It is necessary to consider this parameter directly with reference to the tasks that electric saws must perform. If you need a tool for long-term sawing of thick wood, then it is recommended to opt for saws with high power.

In the event that you are interested in a model so that you can cut garden trees with it, then you can limit yourself to a unit with a lower power parameter.

In the first case, it is recommended to consider models whose power indicator is from 2.5 to 4 kW. In this case, we are talking about a professional tool used in industrial enterprises for timber harvesting.

But those who need a saw that will be convenient to work in the country should choose units with a capacity of 1.5 to 2 kW. These indicators correspond to the model of electric chain saws for household use.

If you follow the recommendations of specialists, then it is advisable to stop the choice on saw models that have a small power reserve. An alternative here can be the option of sharing a tool with a special voltage stabilizer.

The need for this is due to the fact that often, where the summer cottages are located, there is a discrepancy between the voltage and the accepted standards. On top of that, from time to time in such territories, there is a decrease.

When such situations arise, certain changes occur in the operation of the engine, which is expressed in an increase in current strength in order to compensate for a decrease in voltage. However, such situations are not in favor of the engine, due to which its resource decreases.

Bus length

There are several options for the length of the bus. This characteristic is determined by the purpose of the model. In other words, it depends on the length of the tire, for sawing what diameter of the tree the tool in question can be used.

If you have to deal with thick trees, then it is best to give preference to the unit, which has a long tire.

If an electric chain saw is purchased for pruning trees in the garden or sawing wood, then you can opt for a tool with a minimum bar length. Most often, a saw with a tire length of about 30-40 cm can perfectly cope with such tasks.

What are the criteria for choosing a chain saw

It is the technical characteristics that make it possible to understand how to choose the most suitable sawing tool. These parameters give an idea of the conditions under which a particular model of the selected tool can be used.

The first thing I would like to start considering chain saws is the firms that produce them. This point needs to be given special attention, since it directly affects the quality of the selected tool.

Today, the most famous are electric chain saws offered by the following companies:

  • PATRIOT.
  • BOSCH.
  • SPARKY and many others.

Choosing a saw of any of the above brands, the consumer can be sure of the high quality of the product and its reliability. However, on sale you can find models of other brands, which, despite the lesser popularity, are still worthy of attention due to their compliance with European standards.

First of all, they are able to attract the attention of the consumer due to a more affordable price. The most prominent representatives of this list are the following companies:

  • Interskol.
  • EFCO.
  • FORTE.
  • Zenith.

In light of the above, we can conclude that today such a tool as a chain saw is available to almost every consumer, regardless of his income level.

If you are interested in a model of less well-known manufacturers, keep in mind that by purchasing such a unit, you get a tool that will not have very attractive properties. For example, some saws can be quite cumbersome, while others have a plastic surface, thanks to which it will not be very convenient to work with such a tool.

In addition, with such products, not everything is in order, and with ergonomics. Some manufacturers’ products may not provide service at all.

For this reason, it is recommended to consider products from reputable manufacturers if you want to purchase a tool for frequent use. And do not be afraid of the higher price of such products, because all this will be compensated by the high quality of the saw.

electric, chain

Having decided on which brand of saw is best for you, you can proceed to review the technical characteristics.

Features of the location of the engine

If a saw is needed to cut vertically, then it is best to choose a model that has a transverse motor.

Such a unit will be the most suitable tool for sawing wood at an angle of 90 degrees from top to bottom.

If we consider this parameter, then two options can be distinguished:

  • the first provides for the placement of the power unit across the body;
  • second. placement parallel to the motor.

There are many models on sale that are out of balance, which makes it not so easy to work with such a chainsaw. However, there is no guarantee that by placing the tool in a different position, it is possible to achieve an improvement in the conditions for performing the operation. For example, difficulties can arise if you need to cut the branches of a tree at an angle above the level of the head.

preferable in this regard are saws that provide for the longitudinal placement of the engine. These saws can be used for almost all types of work. Naturally, such versatility leads to the high cost of such tools.

However, this still does not prevent them from remaining in demand in the market. Such a device has the correct balancing, and therefore, by placing it in any plane and at the required angle, the owner will not experience problems in solving many problems.

In this regard, even before buying an electric tool, you should decide for what tasks you are purchasing it.

In the event that you only need an electric chain saw for cutting wooden building materials, then you should not choose a unit with a longitudinal position of the electric motor, which, in addition to everything, will cost more than other models with similar capabilities.

When the issue with the manufacturer, power and location of the engine is resolved, other characteristics can be considered.

Disassembly rules

Disassembling electric saws is an important phase in the repair of this unit, which must be carried out strictly according to the rules. As an example, we will consider the disassembly of a tool from the domestic company Interskol.

  • The flag is detached from the screw, it holds the tire, so the fastening should be slightly weaker.
  • Then the saw chain is also loosened with a device that adjusts the voltage.
  • Then the cover is removed, the bolts are unscrewed.
  • The chain is removed, the bus is removed from the working unit.
  • The “lid” of the working container is removed, where the oil is poured.
  • After all the screws are disconnected, the engine gearbox is removed.
  • The main asterisk is then removed. To do this, it is necessary to remove the main washer, which locks the assembly.
  • The screws are unscrewed, the gear clamps are dismantled, then the handle is disconnected.
  • After that, the cover is removed.
  • The container with oil is removed.
  • Next, the brake lever is disassembled, which should be pressed slightly until a slight click is heard.
  • The gearbox turns over and is disconnected from the shaft and from the housing.
  • Typically, a significant amount of dirt and dust accumulates under the housing cover. All this substance should be removed by wiping the nodes with a cotton cloth dipped in alcohol.
  • Then the pump is removed from the gearbox, which is responsible for the oil supply.
  • The fixing mechanism responsible for stopping the engine is being disassembled. The fixing spring is removed, the rods are removed. You should also remove the brake band.
  • Fresh grease is applied to the working units.
  • At the end, the brushes are disassembled. To do this, you need to unscrew a few screws.
  • The rotor is removed. the last element.

The assembly of the mechanism is carried out in the reverse order. All phases of disassembly are best filmed and recorded.

Repair scheme

You can repair the saw yourself. This is pretty easy to do. This requires the following set of tools:

  • several small files of different sizes;
  • a hook that cleans chips from the slots;
  • flat files.

It is best to sharpen the chain on the tool bar itself. Editing is done along the edge of the cutting tooth, while taking into account the sharpening angle (from 30 degrees). This operation must be done delicately: if the angle is set incorrectly, this will affect the quality of work and productivity of the tool.

The file is placed perpendicularly during operation (90 degrees in relation to the tire). The whole process takes place in one vector, translational vibrations are performed, no rotational movements can be made. After processing the tooth, the chain moves, then another element is ground. After processing all the elements, the “polishing” of the fixing cut begins. In the case when the cut clamps protrude too much, the chain will not “reach” the material. the working process will not occur. And vice versa: if the latches are excessively deepened, then the saw will get stuck in the tree. The stop is straightened using a gauge that is applied to the edge of the cutting teeth. It is important that the bar is flush with the retainer.

If the limiter protrudes too much outward, then it is trimmed with a flat file. In this case, movements are made in one direction at an angle of 90 degrees.

Possible malfunctions

There are several possible breakdowns of electric chain saws that you should be aware of.

  • Poor gearbox, which has a rigid coupling with the anchor of the electric engine. As a result, the entire load goes to the power plant. If the chain becomes dull, then the loads increase, which increases the risk of engine overheating several times. Also, under such conditions, the wear of parts increases sharply. Sharpen the saw regularly and do not press too hard during the manufacturing process.
  • Another “weak point” of saws is voltage surges in the network, from which the engine can suffer in the first place. If there is no special protection, then with voltage drops, the power plant may simply fail. Too strong protection also negatively affects the performance of the unit. power drops. The golden mean is important here. Good in this regard are products from the domestic manufacturer Interskol: they have found a rational solution to this issue.

If the tool does not function, then it is required first of all to check the presence of current in the network. You should also check:

  • the brake mechanism of the chain itself;
  • the possibility of breakage of the inertial blade;
  • clutch and chain tensioner.

Usually, adjusting the flap allows you to eliminate the defect in a short time. The cable is also checked: damage to it leads to the fact that the unit does not work.

The saw power is significantly reduced if the carbon shields are worn out. The chain can work in jerks: it stops, then it starts functioning again. If the circuit serves for a long time, then the risk of such a malfunction will increase. First of all, under such circumstances, the brake tape changes, which has worn out over a period of long operation.

In the event of any malfunction, the saw produces a sharp, strange sound. It occurs due to the lack of lubricants, the ingress of mechanical microparticles into the working unit. In this case, disassemble the tool, thoroughly clean all working elements.

Often, the engine of the unit heats up too much, the reasons may be as follows:

  • poor air exchange, clogged air ducts;
  • malfunction of the carburetor;
  • the engine “rests” a little during operation;
  • defective gearbox;
  • old grease;
  • the winding “short-circuits”.

If the saw makes a “curved” cut, then this confirms, first of all, that the teeth are dull.

It is also possible that the tire is about to fail. If the chain does not work, then this indicates a defect in the clutch itself or sprocket.

It should be borne in mind: it is better not to install parts of the Chinese “registration” in the tool, produced by the world’s leading manufacturers. Sooner or later, the device will break down, and it is unlikely there will be an opportunity to restore it. If the body is badly damaged, it is better to send the saw to the service, because this breakdown is very serious.

Measures such as sharpening the saw are also very important. This should be done regularly to keep the engine under minimum stress. If you neglect regular sharpening and do it rarely, then the saw blade will inevitably be drawn in, it will be exposed to too much stress and, in the end, will become unusable ahead of time. You can sharpen yourself, but it is best to take the saw to a service center. They do this work on special equipment. This is done as follows:

  • the chain is removed from the bar and mounted on the guide assembly of the equipment;
  • the chain is tensioned using a ratchet that fixes its cutting tooth;
  • there is a device on the unit that allows you to determine the correct angle (protractor);
  • with the help of an abrasive device, a small layer is removed, which is the final goal of all work;
  • after processing the first tooth, work on the second tooth follows, and so on.

Saw repair: fault diagnosis and elimination

  • Design features and principle of operation
  • Possible malfunctions
  • Disassembly rules
  • Repair scheme
  • Security measures

In a private household, it is impossible to do without a saw, which is often extremely necessary for a wide variety of work. This tool is compact and powerful enough to successfully cope with various branches, wooden blanks and other similar elements. To repair a saw with your own hands, you need to have certain knowledge and skills.

Design features and principle of operation

Units such as a chainsaw and an electric saw are made according to the same principle. They differ only in the design of the drive. In an electric saw, the engine is housed in a PVC casing. It also contains: a gearbox, a container for machine oil, a pump, a chain, etc. This design makes it possible to cope with fairly massive timber of various types.

In the operation of the unit, the quality of the sharpening of the teeth, as well as the engine power, are of great importance.

The principle of the saws is simple, but you need to know how the tool works.

Knots in the chain saw:

  • working saw chain;
  • engine;
  • reducer;
  • drives;
  • oil tank;
  • wiring;
  • corps.

A chain is nothing more than a sequential number of links that are fastened together. The chain itself moves along a special plate (often called a “tire”). The material for the tire is selected very high quality, with a high strength factor. In many ways, the operating time of a chainsaw depends on this unit: the better the tire, the better the electric saw.

Tires are of two different types:

  • welded;
  • solid, which have a tip.

The latter are always made of high strength alloys. In fact, any tire is a “layer cake” of various blocks (at least three), while a driven “asterisk” is inserted into the structure.

A single device in which the tip is present is very convenient to use in larger tool sizes (where the bar is longer than the standard format). The one-piece design significantly reduces friction (up to 12%). For work, a unit is best suited where there is a tire made of ultra-strong alloys: they can withstand high mechanical loads and significant heating. Also, strong high-quality alloys do not react to interaction with mechanical microparticles and can serve for a long time.

When working with a saw, it is important to understand that this tool is source of increased injury hazard. It is possible that a “kickback” may occur, which means that the saw may suddenly bounce to the side and cause injury. Such incidents occur when too much force is applied to the end of the guide bar, which rests on the work material. To ensure that such cases occur as rarely as possible, companies supply the units with a special brake: it blocks the chain automatically.

The automatic chain brake also has a second name. inertial drive. Its work is due to the presence of a protective element (shield). It covers the worker’s left hand. During the labor process, the shield is placed in such a way that it covers the hand. During operation, if a blow occurs, the hand rests against this element, the mechanism stops. Such a device significantly reduces the possibility of injury from the operating mechanism.

Proper lubrication of the chain itself is very important. As a result of heavy loads during the operation of the unit, an inevitably high temperature occurs and the coefficient of friction of materials increases significantly.

There is a special container on the saw, into which machine oil is added. During operation, oil is supplied in portions to the working unit (sprocket, chain). In expensive units (from the firms “Makita”, “Bosch”) there is a special dosimeter of oil supply, which contributes to a more rational consumption of a valuable product and an increase in the productivity of the unit.

There are rules of work that should be followed by both a novice master and a specialist.

  • During operation, the throttle valve must be constantly open.
  • Sawing at a 90 degree angle is not recommended. The tool should be held at some angle from the body.
  • You should strictly follow all the recommendations that are mentioned in the instructions for using the saw.
  • Components can only be used “native”.
  • Before starting repairs, the tool must be de-energized.
  • It is recommended to carry the tool in a cover.
  • It is not worth lifting the saw above the shoulder during work: it is life-threatening.
  • In the event of a tool wedge in the material, the saw can be removed with the utmost care.
  • Fear should be the return impulse, which poses the greatest danger to the worker. When the saw is switched on, it may cause injury.
  • You should be especially careful when working with logs with uncut knots. The probability of jamming in this case is very high.
  • It is impossible to work with a tool that is not tidied up and not adjusted.
  • At the beginning of work, be sure to carry out a small test run.
  • An important knot to watch out for is the chain. Loose chain tension will damage the tool and increase the risk of injury.

Security measures

Before starting to work with an electric saw, make sure that there are no foreign solid objects: the presence of hard elements can damage the tool. It is necessary to reclaim a defect on the ground, the particles of which can clog the grooves through which the oil enters the working units. Lack of regular lubrication will kill the tool in a very short time. The wedge of the tool should be carefully monitored: overheating of the metal leads to a loss of performance characteristics, which means that the service life of the tool is sharply reduced. It is very simple to determine that the saw needs sharpening: if the shavings “come out” too small and there is a bloom of dark color on it, then this indicates that the saw “dulls”.

The explanation for this phenomenon is simple: the saw cannot cut the material and crumbles it, so small fragments appear. There should be no radii on the saw head, that is, fragments with torn out areas. The shape of the teeth and the working cutting edge must be unchanged.

Before starting repair work, it is important to make a preventive inspection and correct diagnosis of the tool. The complexity of the repair directly depends on the severity of the breakdown. It often happens that it is impossible to “resolve the issue” on your own. There are breakdowns where special equipment is required. In such circumstances, the tool must be returned to a specialized service center that has the appropriate approvals and certificates for the repair of such equipment.

How to use the main table

We collected all saw models in a large table and sorted them in ascending order of power cost per centimeter of bar length. In other words, we took the price of the saw and divided it by the horsepower divided by the length of the bar. Those. the most profitable options for buying are closer to the beginning of the table.

So, if you, for example, choose between Bosch, Makita or Hitachi, it is easy to understand from the table whose offer is more profitable.

What formed the basis of our chain saw ranking

So the length of the bus remains. We assume that people select it for the diameter of the logs or other materials they will work with. Therefore, at times they will load the saw as much as possible. Therefore, it would be logical to take into account the power of electric saws, taking into account the length of the bar, and for the calculations we introduced the criterion for the specific power. the power per centimeter of the length of the bar. It will allow you to collect saws with different tires in one table. Then it remains for us to add a price factor to find out which of the offers is the most profitable.

Why We Didn’t Consider Chain Speed

How chain saws differ?

The main characteristic of chain saws is motor power. Other important parameters are the length of the bar, the speed of the chain and its characteristics, such as the shape of the cutting teeth and their number. All this has an impact on how quickly the operator can make a cut and how comfortable this process will be.

For household, firewood and gardening, saws with bar lengths of 30, 35 or 40 cm are usually used. The short bar gives you the convenience of working in tight spaces and also takes up less storage space. Long allows to cut larger diameter trunks in one pass.

Most chain saw motors range from 1.8 to 2.4 kW. Even the weakest motor will be enough for normal operation, but a more powerful motor will make it faster and more comfortable.

As for the chains, in terms of the number of links for each length of the bar, everything is more or less standard here, but the shape and parameters of the cutting teeth may differ. Each manufacturer selects a chain for the characteristics of their saws. The manufacturers of the first echelon of the chain, as a rule, have their own, while the rest use mass products of various well-known brands, for example Oregon and a number of others.
