Spontaneous calls heard shortly after another owl species vocalized nearby.

Habitat: north-facing slope with bigcone Douglas-fir, canyon live oak, incense cedar, Coulter pine, white alder, California bay, and montane chaparral.

Equipment: Sony PCM-M10, Sennheiser ME62, and a Telinga 22 inch parabola hand-held. The vocalizations occurred at about 90 degrees relative to where the dish was aimed. Edits: trimmed and normalized to -3 dB, which reduced the volume somewhat.

Recorded in an area with balsam fir, spruce, eastern hemlock, eastern white pine, and various hardwoods. The recording starts with brief burst of "chitters" and then transitions to wails and toots. The first gap, between the chitters and the other sounds, was several tens of seconds (removed due to handling noise and dictation). The second gap occurred when I spliced two files together. Other edits: trimmed and normalized to -3 dB, which amplified the sounds.

Equipment: Sony PCM-M10 and a Sennheiser ME67.
