How Differential Works On Tiller

Types of power distribution mechanisms

Since the devices for cultivating the soil have a relatively large mass, which makes them almost impossible to deploy manually, an appropriate mechanism for distributing power is installed here. Typically, the following devices are used:

  • A rigid drive that delivers uniform power to two wheels at once, since most of these devices are two-wheeled, to turn it is enough just to roll the block in a certain direction, after which one wheel adheres more tightly to the ground, which causes a turn.
  • Also, modern differentials for equipment such as a tiller often include a simplified mechanism such as an overrunning clutch, which allows you to increase the torque for one of the driving wheels, which is done due to increased traction, compared to conventional axle rotation.
  • Also, to solve the problem, a classic gear differential can be used, which allows you to provide power and torque in an inverse proportional ratio, depending on the need (for example, when turning, one axle is given increased torque, and the other is subjected to an inverse proportional load).

differential, works, tiller

There are several such mechanisms, or rather their types.

Depending on the version of the mechanism used, an appropriate solution is provided that allows you to provide conditions for free turning on the ground, where there is a reinforced hitch with the surface.

Important! Such a differential for a tiller, like an overrunning clutch, can be made independently with your own hands, however, this requires knowing the characteristic features of the device of this technique, as well as using a scheme that can be found freely available on the Internet.

Simple tiller design

Many farmers, when using conventional equipment, often think about how to make a differential on a tiller with their own hands. A similar idea can visit the master when an old element breaks. There are no special difficulties in making a differential for a tiller with your own hands. But still, for a start, you should stock up on a suitable scheme or prepare drawings.

Those who are thinking about which type of differential to choose for a tiller should remember that this type of equipment does not require long rotation of the wheels about the axle. That is why you can choose the simplest options.

Often, universal differential systems are used for tillers. They make it possible to deviate the wheels from the axis by a certain degree.

In the simplest version, you need to take a bushing with a transverse slot and insert a short axle into it. The last element is necessarily fixed with a bolt, and after that it is attached to the wheel structure. This system works quite simply. The drive axle must turn the bushing until it stops, that is, until it comes into contact with the bolt. It is worth noting that with this element the master can initially set the most suitable wheel rotation angle for him, which also depends on the size of the slot.

A feature of such a detail is its maximum simplicity. You don’t have to be an experienced craftsman or mechanic to make such a differential for your tiller. You just need to have certain skills on the machine. This will be enough to obtain the basic elements that are needed to make such a differential.

DIY constructive mechanism

To personally make a homemade differential for a mechanism such as a tiller, you should pay special attention to the work. In this case, it is required to consider in detail the entire algorithm of actions for the manufacture of such parts:

  • First of all, it is required to take into account the design features of the equipment used (special equipment).
  • It is also important to choose the optimal installation option that fits the design features of the technical means.
  • You need to download and print a diagram with exact dimensions or make it yourself.
  • Further, all the elements for the manufacture of such a mechanism (hubs, for tillers, gears, camshaft and other components) are selected separately.
  • Next, you also need to choose the option for manufacturing such a device as a differential for special equipment.
  • Study in detail all the materials regarding how such a mechanism is performed in practice with your own hands.
  • After studying the theory and preparing the necessary components, you also need to select tools.
  • During the assembly process, it is also recommended to use the corresponding video instructions that are available on the Internet.
  • All prepared elements must be pre-adjusted to the same size that is used on the tiller.
  • Subsequently, according to the instructions, all structural components are brought together.
  • At the end, the part is checked for operability, and only after that it is installed on the axis of the special equipment.

This design should be done strictly according to the instructions.

In the manufacture of such a mechanism, it is required to ensure that the free travel of this part does not exceed 240 degrees. During manufacturing, it is required to adjust the parts in such a way that free play is provided, which will not be impeded by anything.

Important! In the manufacture of this equipment, one should take into account the fact that a heavy load from the power plant is applied to the differential, which is why the part must be checked accordingly so that later, during operation, it can withstand the transferred loads.

If the differential for the tiller is made on your own, you must strictly observe all dimensions, and also avoid gaps, otherwise this type of equipment will last a short time. It is also important when creating a structure to also use only high-quality materials that were used to create factory components.

Additionally, it should be noted that there is no need to purchase all the parts for the device, since spare parts previously installed on the tiller can be used for this element. In other words, you can remove the working mechanism from the technical device for domestication, and then modernize it so that it meets all the requirements of the owner of special equipment.

How to make a differential for a tiller with your own hands

Motor-cultivators have recently been in great demand among agricultural workers. As for the tiller differential, it is an integral part of the vehicle’s powertrain design. It is an element with several wheels that are located on the same axle. Despite the fact that initially this part may seem quite complicated, it is not only easy to fix it, but you can make a differential for the tiller with your own hands. There are many diagrams and drawings that are successfully used by both specialists and beginners in this business.

How to make a differential on a tiller with your own hands?

Despite the fact that the differential for the tiller has a rather simple design, before making it yourself, you will need to prepare and study the drawings. They should indicate the dimensions of the spare parts for the mechanism and how they are fixed in the device.

Practice shows that every self-made differential has a small angle of rotation of the wheels in the free position. As a rule, this parameter does not exceed 250 °. This disadvantage is due to the fact that a transverse groove is provided in the design of the mechanism, which significantly reduces the power and efficiency of the structure. Another significant disadvantage is the rapid wear of the parts of the homemade differential, especially if a large amount of dirt accumulates between them. In this regard, do-it-yourself differentials should be used for extremely light models of tilers.

In order for a homemade differential to turn out to be more durable and effective, you should adhere to a number of rules:

  • it is not necessary to leave too small a groove in the space between the bushing and the extension shaft. In the event of corrosion, these parts will stick to each other quickly enough;
  • for the purpose of timely lubrication of the differential without regular disassembly, a pressing lubricator must be placed on the bushing of the mechanism;
  • carbon steel is the best choice for making extension cords. As a result, the mechanism will turn out to be more reliable and, at the same time, not expensive. The video will tell you more about the manufacture of the differential.

After the hub is manufactured, it can be installed on the tiller and tested in operation. Do not put high loads on the part immediately after it is installed on the unit, otherwise it may deform. It is best to walk with the tiller several times on an even surface in the yard, turning the car several times. After that, the hub will finally fall into place, and the unit with it can be used to work in the garden.

A do-it-yourself differential or hub can be successfully used to equip Neva brand trailers. The design of the units of this brand allows you to easily install the part, and, if necessary, easily and quickly remove it.

How to make a differential for a tiller

Auto mechanic specializing in agricultural machinery

Modern special equipment made it possible to bring agriculture to a new level. Currently, there is no need to cultivate the land by hand, as there are auxiliary equipment for this. However, like other specialized devices, such a type of equipment as a tiller is impermanent, which is why these devices have to be repaired in a timely manner. The load distribution system often fails.

A tiller differential is a device that distributes power evenly between the wheels. Due to the constant heavy load, the device may fail, which requires timely replacement.

Differential for tiller can be made by hand

The purpose of this element

Before you get acquainted in detail with the varieties, manufacturing options and the mounting method, you need to consider why the differential is installed on the tiller, namely:

  • The main function of this device is the distribution of power between the wheels of special equipment.
  • At the moment the wheel turns about the axis, this mechanism does not allow an element passing along a smaller radius to slip.
  • The differentials are regularly loaded, provided that the wheels rotate about the axis in a different projection (when cornering).
  • The device can handle a relatively large mass (load that appears when the direction of the axis changes).

In other words, if special equipment or other vehicles are not equipped with these mechanisms, then when turning on one side a significantly greater load will be imposed, which will entail a gradual failure of the entire suspension.

Important! Differentials for a tiller, due to a fairly simple device, can be made independently, but here you first need to create an appropriate diagram of this element.

In this video, you will learn how to make a tiller differential:

A device such as a tiller differential is recommended to be assembled and installed, provided that there is adequate education and experience. If there are no skills in this matter, then you can always contact our company, where qualified employees will be ready to take on the manufacture and installation of the device on special equipment. All work is done quickly, reliably and efficiently. At the same time, we take a modest remuneration for our services.

Advantages and disadvantages

The main advantage of this method of solving the issue with turning the wheels is the simplicity of the design. In addition, such a differential is universal, as it is suitable for almost all types of tillers.

But the semi-differential also has disadvantages. Here you need to first of all note the small angle of rotation, which will be available after installing such a structure. A mechanism of this type does not provide the ability to rotate more than 240 º. Many farmers note that the presence of a transverse groove makes the structure not very strong. Under heavy load, the axle can break. Therefore, those who decide to use their own made differentials for the tiller should be prepared for the fact that the structure will periodically have to be repaired and altered.

Considering all the pros and cons, we can say that for those who are not too picky about their tiller and slightly load it with direct and rotary work, the semi-differential is perfect. For serious loads, it is worth looking for more durable structures.

tiller with differential: purpose and characteristics

the tiller is an indispensable assistant for most summer residents, since without him it is impossible to perform some voluminous tasks. In order not to be disappointed in the purchase, you should study in more detail what the tillers with a differential are and what is their difference.

Why would a tiller need this element

The tiller wheel, which follows the outer arc when cornering, must travel a longer distance. And here there is a need for a differential or other mechanism for distributing power, which will avoid slipping. If this element is not in the wheeled device, it will cause a straightening of the movement. over, the greater the distance between the wheels, the more difficult it will be to turn.

Most of the work that is carried out on the ground, for example, cultivation or fertilization, is carried out in a straight line. But this does not mean at all that the device will never turn. Of course, the standard version of the tiller with a rigid 2-wheel drive makes it quite convenient to use in most agricultural work. But if you need frequent turns, the problem with slipping and steering will have to be additionally solved. If you do not use special mechanisms, then the vehicle will brake with lugs. Such work will be difficult even for a person with great physical strength.

Most often, experts choose the use of overrunning clutches as a solution to this issue.

These are simple and versatile settings that allow you to correctly distribute the load between the wheels when you need to turn the tiller. The versatility of this method lies in the fact that overrunning clutches can be used not only on a rigid axle, but also on a connected one. In this case, when turning, the wheel will tend to rotate faster than the front shaft. This makes it possible to conveniently control the machine and work even in small areas, as the device becomes more maneuverable.

Why is a differential needed

Most summer residents prefer to purchase summer cottages with a differential, and beginners do not quite understand how such a tiller differs from the usual one. In simpler and unprofessional terms, it is customary to call a differential a blocking swivel extension. The main function performed by the described component of the tiller structure is to reduce the radius when turning the vehicle. Accordingly, it becomes possible to make a larger wheelbase, to increase the plowing width. The equipment does not tip over when cornering, while it demonstrates amazing maneuverability.

At the time of using the differential, one wheel is locked, that is, the wheels begin to act independently of each other, as a result of which the turn is easier (turn in place).

This technique is great for those who do not want or cannot put extra effort to change the direction of the tiller’s movement. Attached equipment, as well as its absence in the design, does not in any way affect the described ability.

Another benefit of a differential is to use a retaining bolt and move it from a bore in the hub to a cylindrical recess. In this case, the element can play the role of an extension cord, which allows you to increase the wheelbase of the equipment.

The differential is installed on the input shaft, which should be round with a diameter of 30 millimeters.

Most popular models

There are many models on the market that come with a differential. Some of them are especially popular with modern gardeners, among them the following.

  • Crosser CR-M8E.

How to make a differential for a tiller with your own hands

Motor-cultivators have recently been in great demand among agricultural workers. As for the tiller differential, it is an integral part of the vehicle’s powertrain design. Despite the fact that initially this part may seem quite complicated, it is not only easy to fix it, but you can make a differential for the tiller with your own hands. There are many diagrams and drawings that are successfully used by both specialists and beginners in this business.

What is differential

This is a special mechanism that transfers rotation from the gearbox directly to the wheels themselves in one of the axles. If you try to explain it in the most understandable language, all the energy that comes from the gearbox is evenly distributed between the wheels of one of the axles.

The streams themselves can be distributed in a different range, depending on the course of movement, the angle of the car and other parameters. Distribution range varies from 50:50 to 100: 0.

The main task is to ensure that the wheels rotate at different angles while maintaining the torque. This is especially true when cornering, including very sharp turns, when it is necessary to put a load on the drive wheel of one axle, make a maneuver, and then stabilize the distribution in order to continue driving in a straight line. Without it, there would be no free rotation of the wheels on one axle with a different number of revolutions. And the car would skid around corners, which is unsafe.

Important! When the first signs of a differential malfunction are detected, it is necessary to promptly respond to this by correcting the problem!

How does the differential work and signs that indicate its malfunction

The differential is one of the key elements of a vehicle’s transmissions. It transfers energy from the engine to the wheels to rotate them at different angular speeds. In the event of a malfunction with its operation, the car will not be able to move normally. over, it can be unsafe.

Differential malfunction symptoms

The main signs of a malfunctioning differential are:

  • increased noise level while driving
  • knocks or bumps that are not only audible, but can also be felt by the driver and passengers while driving
  • grease leak

Bridge jamming is considered the most common and rather serious failure. But, such a problem does not arise immediately, as a result of some malfunctions that were ignored by the driver. By the way, all 3 of the above “symptoms” usually precede bridge jamming.

That is why you cannot close your eyes to all this. Oil leakage may indicate the need to replace oil seals and gaskets. You will immediately need to change the oil. If it is severely contaminated or lacking, the parts wear out faster, which, accordingly, will lead to some kind of new malfunction or serious breakdown with replacement parts.

Of course, you can try to figure out the problem yourself, find and eliminate the cause. But, not all of them succeed. Therefore, it is better, without delay, to sign up for a service center and show the car to a specialist. This will help you find the exact cause and fix the problem.

We are not always talking about some kind of expensive repair with replacement parts. But, if you delay for a long time and ignore the problems, sooner or later the differential will refuse to perform its functions normally. And then, to solve the problem that has arisen, you will have to spend much more time, effort, nerves and money. Better not to bring it to this!

General Tips

Let’s start with the simplest option in the form of an axle extension with a transverse groove. It will be reasonably reliable even when made from affordable low carbon steel.

tiller with differential: overrunning clutch and unlockers, how to make a lock with your own hands. drawings

An integral part of the power drive of any vehicle with multiple wheels on one axle can be considered a differential for a tiller. The purpose of this mechanism is to distribute power between the wheels depending on rolling resistance, which is extremely necessary when cornering.

Since a wheel passing the outer arc of the turning trajectory, in the same time, travels a longer distance than the wheel following the inner arc, it must rotate faster, otherwise it will slip.

Thus, an axle devoid of a differential will tend to straighten its movement, and this effect is expressed the stronger, the greater the distance between the wheels.

Differential need

Many works performed with a tiller (for example, cultivation) assume its rectilinear movement. In this case, the rigid drive to both wheels works great, significantly reducing the cost and simplifying the tiller.

If you need frequent sharp turns, a tiller of this type will require the application of noticeable physical efforts. one of the wheels will brake with lugs, and the tiller will have to tilt, hanging the outer wheel in the air.

This is especially difficult if the tiller has a wide track and a large enough weight.

Overrunning clutches

This mechanism is well-known in all its variations: both with a ratchet mechanism (bicycle wheel hub) and with roller wedging (electric starter bendix).

Overrunning clutches are also used in the power drive of a number of vehicles with connected axles. However, such a solution has a characteristic feature: when cornering, the overrunning clutch is disconnected at the wheel running along the outer radius, since it tends to rotate faster than the drive shaft.

To facilitate entry into a turn, on the contrary, most of the torque should be reported to him.

This problem is solved in the classic gear differential, which distributes power in inverse proportion to the resistance to rotation of the wheels.

But it is also much more difficult to manufacture, and also requires forced full or partial blocking off-road, since otherwise it redistributes all the power to the skidding wheel.

How to make a homemade differential for a tiller with your own hands. drawings

How to make a tiller differential with your own hands? As a rule, the operation of the tiller does not require long-term rotation of the wheel relative to the drive axle.

Due to this, often called “semi-differential” schemes are common, which provide the ability to freely rotate the wheel about the axis at a certain angle.

For more details on the “half-differential” see

The simplest mechanism in this case looks like a bushing with a transverse slot attached to the tiller axis. A short axle is inserted inside this bushing, secured from falling out by a bolt wrapped in its body through a slot, and the wheel is directly attached to the axle.

At the same time, when the tiller moves, the drive axle turns the bushing freely until the rear edge of the slot rests against the bolt, and then transmits torque through it to the axle.

The quality of the grown products, their productivity, and, ultimately, the return on financial and physical investments depend on the timely and high-quality use of special means when growing crops. Here you will learn how to make a sprayer with your own hands.

During the turn, the wheel, trying to overtake the drive, moves the bolt forward along the slot, breaking the transmission of torque, and the angle of easy rotation of the tiller depends on the length of the slot.

Such extension cords are extremely simple and can be manufactured by unskilled machine operators, and therefore are cheap and widespread. Usually they are made with several additional holes, allowing you to vary the tiller track width and rigidly connect the wheel to the drive axle if necessary.

Blueprints of these homemade differentials are widespread on the internet.

The disadvantage of the described design is the relatively small possible angle of free rotation of the wheel (no more than 240 degrees), since the transverse groove greatly reduces the overall strength of the mechanism, and high internal friction, especially when dirt is inevitable inside the hub.

Freewheel extension cords are most often used on light tillers like Niva.

power tiller differential steering demo video

Differential for tillers Salyut and the likes of Texas, Foreman, Viking, Forza, Sadko, Don, Huter, Profi, having a relatively large mass, has a slightly more complex design, but also a larger freewheel angle. within 330 degrees.

This is ensured by the fact that the engagement is carried out by protrusions on the drive axle extension and on a freely rotating hub fixed thereon, equipped with ball bearings. Accordingly, the hub can make almost a full revolution about the axis until it rests against the opposite edge of the protrusion.

It is noticeably easier to deploy a tiller with such differentials.

A number of designs allow the wheels to rotate freely about the axis and more than one revolution. For example, the Farmer tiller differential consists of two clutches controlled by levers on the steering wheel.

If necessary, the owner of the tiller can disengage the desired clutch, allowing the corresponding wheel to rotate as long as desired.

Power distribution options

Structurally, the simplest way to solve the problem arising from the rigid connection of the wheels is to use overrunning clutches, which allow the wheel to rotate faster than the axle driving it.

Axle extension

It is better to use the bolt connecting the components of the extension with a head for an internal hexagon and mill a groove with a width equal to its outer diameter.

In this case, firstly, there are no protruding parts that can wind grass around themselves, and secondly, the bolt tightened to the stop will not loosen over time.

The gap between the bushing and the extension shaft must not be made too small, since they will touch each other if corrosion occurs. It is highly desirable to place a grease nipple on the sleeve for CIP lubrication of the structure.

The more complex pivoting hub design can also be made from mild steel as it welds easily.

Finishing of the bearing bores in the hub must be done after the flange and steering angle stop have been welded to it due to the inevitable warping of the part during welding.

The invested labor costs will quickly pay off by facilitating the operation of the tiller.

Tiller clutch. device, principle of operation and DIY manufacturing

The tiller clutch is an important transmission element through which the engine crankshaft transmits torque to the gearbox mechanisms. With the help of this part, during gear shifting, the engine and gearbox are disconnected. It is due to the participation of the clutch that the tiller starts smoothly from the spot, and also stops without completely turning off the motor.

Clutch functions in the tiller design

Clutch operation is based on the action of the friction clutch. This transmission element performs several important functions, among which it stands out:

  • Uninterrupted transmission of torque;
  • Suppression of torsional vibrations;
  • Smooth gear shifting;
  • Shockless gear connection;
  • Connecting and disconnecting a gearbox with an internal combustion engine;
  • Disconnecting the Transmission from the Flywheel Assembly.

The clutch device makes it possible to briefly disconnect the engine crankshaft and the power train of the machine. Thanks to the clutch, the vehicle starts and stops moving smoothly and without jerking.

Centrifugal clutch. design and benefits

This kind of element should be distinguished from other structures due to its reliability and durability. It is used in automatic gearboxes. Its design consists of the following elements:

  • Flywheel;
  • Pulley;
  • Hubs with locking groove and key;
  • Flange;
  • Bushings;
  • Casing;
  • Bearing;
  • Retaining ring.

One of the most important roles is played by the differential device associated with the centrifugal clutch. It helps to improve vehicle maneuverability and ensure smooth cornering.

Together with the clutch, the differential regulates the rotation of the wheels of the tiller at different speeds. over, the power transmission mechanisms work together to act as wheel blockers. In some models of equipment, instead of a differential, a special device is installed that locks one of the wheels of the tiller at the command of the driver.

modern models of equipment are equipped with a friction clutch. It is mounted between the motor and the gearbox. In this design, the driven parts are closely connected with the input shaft of the gearbox, and the leading parts are closely connected with the crankshaft of the engine. In most cases. and the driving and driven elements are made in the form of flat circular discs, or in the form of a cone. Just like the centrifugal clutch, the friction clutch is activated by manipulating a separate handle.

How the clutch works

A tiller clutch consists of several important elements:

  • Control devices;
  • Leading element;
  • Driven parts.

The driving part consists of the end face of the engine flywheel and the pressure plate. The disc rotates with the attached flywheel. At the same time, the disc can also move axially in relation to the flywheel. Between these two elements is the driven disc, which is located on the driven shaft. Spring elements in the form of cylinders are located around the perimeter of the pressure plate.
The function of the springs is based on the compression of the disc they support. In this case, the other end of the springs contacts the casing. Thus, the springs maintain the clutch for the tiller in a constant engaged state.

The control mechanism is made of release levers, connected to the body of the pressure discs by means of rods with a deflector and a pedal. When disengaging the clutch, the owner of the tiller engages the clutch cable, which transfers the force to the release levers. When the springs are compressed, the levers move the driven disc away from the pressure plate, which disengages the clutch.

The bearing reduces friction by preventing the stationary leg from touching the rotation levers. Most of the chiller models are equipped with three levers, located at an angle of 120 degrees in relation to each other. Each clutch lever is returned to its original position by a spring. In this case, the layering moves to the distance required to turn off the levers. If this distance is not reached, then the clutch starts to slip.

How to make a clutch mechanism with your own hands?

The clutch on the tiller works on the principle of increased friction of the components, so rapid wear cannot be avoided. In this case, you should try to make the mechanism yourself. The homemade clutch design will be composed of:

  • the input shaft of the gearbox and the flywheel of the Moskvich car;
  • hub and steering knuckle from Tavria;
  • B-profile;
  • Two grooved driven pulley;
  • Crankshaft from GAZ-69.

The subsequent work on the assembly of the mechanism is as follows:

  • First, you need to grind the crankshaft so that it does not cling to other elements of the tiller;
  • We put the standard tiller hub on the shaft;
  • Further on the shaft, it is necessary to groove a place for the bearing. This operation should be performed as accurately as possible so that the bearing fits perfectly on the shaft. As a result, the hub should fit without any gaps, and the pulley should scroll;
  • Then turn the crankshaft over and do the same on the back of it;
  • Next, drill 6 holes in the pulley with a drill with a 5mm drill bit. The distance between them must be the same. Since 10mm bolts will be used, holes must also be drilled on the back of the wheel driving the drive belt;
  • Next, install the pulley on the flywheel, and tighten both parts with a bolt. Then mark the drill spots on the flywheel so that they line up with the 6 holes in the pulley;
  • Remove the pulley and drill holes in the flywheel;
  • After that, put on the pulley again and securely tighten the structure with bolts;
  • Grind the inner surface of the crankshaft and flywheel so that they do not hit each other.

The finished structure can be installed on a regular place in the tiller. Do not forget to connect the cables, leading them as far as possible from the friction elements.
