How Much Oil Should Be Used In Gasoline For A Chainsaw

Those who constantly use a chainsaw, as no one else understands that how long and in high quality it will serve depends on the correct ratio of oil and gasoline when refueling the mechanism. Before using a power tool, you should pay attention to its brand and features, since each manufacturer recommends a different ratio of fuel and lubricants.

How Much Oil Should Be Used In Gasoline For A Chainsaw

About how to refuel petrol, the correct ratio of oil and gasoline and the preparation of various working mixtures will be discussed in this article.

Features and characteristics of various chainsaws

Regardless of the brand, each chainsaw has a basis through which it works safely. Without a two-stroke carburetor engine and two tanks, it is impossible to imagine any mechanism.

  • Each of their parts plays a crucial role in the operation of a power tool and complements the rest of the elements. In one of the tanks should be a fuel mixture consisting of gasoline and engine oil.
  • Typically, the proportions in the ratio between gasoline are determined by the manufacturer, it is extremely important to comply with them.
  • As a rule, the consumption of gasoline and oil is enough for the same period, but at the same time gasoline is poured more than one and a half, or two times.

The constant addition of oil to the fuel tank is almost certainly an event that allows the saw to work for a long time and without interruption. No one who uses this mechanism wants to constantly engage in repair work, but if the fuel is not diluted with oil, the saw engine may malfunction and it will fail.

Of course, only personal experience can suggest the correct ratio of fuels and lubricants. However, one should never neglect the recommendations from the manufacturer, as independent experiments can lead to the breakdown of expensive mechanisms. It is also worth noting that budget mixes are suitable for domestic saws than for foreign counterparts, so prudent owners try in this case to save the budget and buy cheaper supplies for devices.

Which gasoline is suitable for a chainsaw

Older models of Russian chainsaws work normally on A-76 gasoline, but for chainsaws manufactured abroad, it is better not to use this fuel, but to fill the tank with better gasoline, such as A.92. But, here the question may arise about the quality of the very gasoline that is purchased at gas stations in the country, it often doesn’t correspond to the declared composition. In order not to risk in vain, some owners of imported chainsaws buy 95 gasoline.

They are also not advised to use fuel that has stood unnecessarily for a long period. The fact is that gasoline is capable of losing its main characteristics over time. For example, the octane number in gasoline is of great importance, with a decrease in which, during operation of the saw, a decrease in engine power may occur.

A chainsaw may become unworkable due to the filling of poor quality fuel. Sometimes such an error is very expensive for the owner, since repairing a failed mechanism costs much more than fresh and expensive gasoline.

How to choose a little for chainsaws

  • The most common oil for use in chainsaws available to most Russians is API.Tv motor oil.
  • Another brand is also used. Api-TS, but here the manufacturer’s permission is required to use the material, as well as its amount when added to gasoline.
  • There is another option, for saws with a small load, API-TC oil may be applicable here.
  • All of these brands are classified by the American Petroleum Institute, but there is another no less popular series of oils that are produced by the Japanese. They also classify lubricants into power classes. For the operation of chainsaws, fuel and lubricants of the JASO-FB and JASO FD brands are recommended.

Note! Do not use oils created for four-stroke engines in chainsaws with two-stroke engines.

In the second case, the lubricant must completely burn out. This effect can only be achieved through the use of synthetic oil, it gives a minimum of smoke and almost does not leave any residues. It is important to read the instructions for using and mixing consumables for a particular brand of chainsaw.

How to make a mixture of chainsaws from oil and gasoline

After you have studied the full information from the manufacturer, which is necessarily present in the accompanying documents, you can proceed directly to pouring materials into the tank.

For chainsaws with a capacity of less than one and a half kilowatts, oil is poured 50 times less than gasoline. But there are exceptions, for example, in Chinese chainsaws, these proportions come down to 1X25, but for the manufacturer Partner again, changes up to 1X40 consumption. For the Husqvarna and Stihl brands, the proportions of 25 ml of oil per 1 liter of gasoline are applicable.

If you do not comply with the recommended dosage of combustible materials, a lot of problems can arise:

  • Engine parts, between which friction occurs during the operation of the saw, will more likely wear out, which means the mechanism itself will last less,
  • Bearings will fail faster;
  • The resource of the mechanism will be significantly reduced;
  • The device will become less functional.

Preparation of the mixture should be carried out immediately before starting work. But after its completion, the unburned remains of combustible material and oil are necessarily drained. It is strictly forbidden to store them in a gas tank, even for several days. This is due to the additives in the oil, it will begin to break down directly in the tank, because caring owners drain the rest of the mixture and then start the chainsaw at idle.

Terms of use

The best option for mixing the mixture is a canister with various openings for gasoline and oil. The correct mixture is obtained when mixing consumables from the tilt of the canister. Plastic or glass containers can be used to prepare the working fluid, but in this case there is a risk that fuels and lubricants will ignite. But plastic containers are also not convenient, as they can easily bend and pour into your hands or mechanism.

Dilution of gasoline is carried out only in dry and clean containers, any residues and liquid particles will lead to a violation of proportions when mixed. Therefore, care should be taken to check the tank for all kinds of dirt or residues.

Take all possible precautions when mixing combustible supplies. Rubber gloves should be put on your hands, manipulations should be done carefully, without spilling a drop of gasoline on the surface of the earth or floor. If the fluid accidentally spills out, it must be wiped with a cloth and disposed of.

Oil producers

  • The most interesting proposals regarding not only oils but also chainsaws are available from Stihl. Our men appreciated the quality of engines and consumables, so they are incredibly popular. If you have such a mechanism in your household, you should not spend money on cheap materials.
  • Another world brand for the production of chainsaws stands out. Husqvarna, which is famous for manufacturing high-quality motor materials for two-stroke engines. However, when using them, excessive smoke is noted, and this is with incomplete engine power.
  • Ravenol is also a well-known brand that you can buy without fear. The main thing to be afraid of is the fakes that flooded today’s markets around the world.

The fact that it is forbidden to pour “clean” gasoline into chainsaws is warned by buyers’ sellers at the time of purchase of the tool. Many buyers learn about this for the first time, wondering why it is necessary to dilute gasoline with oil. If this rule is neglected, then the consequences for the instrument can be simply catastrophic. In most cases, even engine overhaul will no longer be able to help. In the material, we find out what proportions of gasoline and oil should be for refueling the chainsaw, and also what may lead to non-compliance with this rule.

Why add oil

At the heart of any chainsaw is a two-stroke internal combustion engine. This is one of the simplest mechanisms, consisting of one cylinder and without a separate lubrication system. The technology is such that the lubricant must enter the cylinder with the fuel mixture, settle there, and lubricate the cylinder walls, piston rings, etc. The simplicity of the design of the tool has many advantages, among which the main one is the ability to repair the engine and its components independently.

Diluting gasoline, which is poured into the chainsaw, is required in order to extend the life of the tool. Diluting the fuel with chainsaw oil is mandatory, and if for some reason you forgot to do this, then the use of the tool is strictly contraindicated.

It’s important to know! In chainsaws there is no special tank for pouring oil, which would be spent for lubricating the rubbing parts of the engine, as in cars. This is due to the simplest design of a two-stroke motor. The present oil tank in the chainsaws is designed to lubricate the chain and tire during the operation of the tool.

Proportions of oil and gasoline for chainsaws

How much oil to add to gasoline for a chainsaw is indicated primarily in the instructions for use of the tool. If you forget what the proportion of oil and gasoline should be, then you can always open the instructions and update your knowledge. If the instruction is lost, then this material will help you. To begin with, it is worth noting that there are several options for mixing oil materials with fuel. Choosing any, it is worth noting that the main criterion for each is the correct measurement of the components. Only exact observance of the proportion of oil and gasoline will achieve the fuel mixture of the necessary technical qualities.

One of the most common proportions is 1:50. This means that 1 liter of gasoline must be diluted with 20 ml of oil. This recipe for the preparation of the mixture is relevant for tools whose power exceeds 1.5 kW. This option is one of the most popular, so if you forget the exact proportions for your instrument, you can always focus on the first option.

The second option provides for a proportion of 1:25. To mix 1 liter of gasoline with 10 ml of oil is recommended by Chinese manufacturers for their tools. For tools whose power does not exceed 1.5 kW, it is recommended to pour oil in an amount of 25 ml per 1 liter of gasoline. Each manufacturer’s chainsaw has its own limitations, and recommendations for the preparation of the fuel mixture, which are recommended to be followed. The two main options that are universal are listed above.

It’s important to know! The excess amount of the oil mixture in the fuel is also negative, as this will lead to a reduction in engine life due to increased shock loads on the cylinder and piston, and will also lead to the formation of soot.

Not everyone knows what kind of gasoline to pour into a chainsaw. This is also indicated in the technical documentation for the chainsaw. In modern saw models, it is recommended to pour fuel of a brand not lower than AI-90, that is, AI-92 or AI-95. And it doesn’t matter who the tool manufacturer is, China or Europe. Professionals recommend the use of AI-92 gasoline, since the 95th is in most cases made from 92 by adding additives. If you know for sure that it is really pure 95, then it is better to use it.

Many craftsmen continue to pour gasoline of grades lower than AI-90 into modern chainsaw models, as this was allowed to be done for obsolete models of tools: Friendship, Taiga, and others. This is not recommended!

Which oil to use to lubricate the chainsaw chains depends on the model of tool. Stihl brand saws and the like produce special lubricants that are intended only for use in such tools. Recommended oils can also be found in the technical documentation. When choosing a lubricant, attention must be paid to ensure that it is intended for two-stroke engines. Oils for mixing with gasoline and for chain lubrication differ in composition, quality and purpose. You can not mix them, as this will accelerate the failure of the tool. Recommended brands of oils for two-stroke engines:

Saw refueling algorithm

A mixture of gasoline and oil is best prepared in a 2.5-liter plastic bottle if you often need to refuel the tool. If it is necessary to prepare fuel for only a few refueling, it is better to use a smaller tank. It is recommended that you acquire measuring tanks, this will allow you to observe the exact proportions of both liquids. Most oil manufacturers offer such measuring devices.

Initially, fuel is poured into the tank, and then oil is added. It is important to consider that there should be enough space in the tank to thoroughly mix the fuel mixture.

It’s important to know! It is strictly contraindicated to prepare the fuel mixture directly in the tank of the instrument.

After preparation, it is recommended to store this mixture no more than 2 weeks. At each filling, it is recommended to shake the mixture thoroughly. If you are not sure that all fuel will be used up, it is better not to cook it in large quantities.

Risks of using fuel and oil substitutes

To avoid premature failure of the chainsaw, it is recommended to refuel the tool with exclusively high-quality and branded consumables. Finding such materials is not difficult, since they are usually sold at branded points of sale. The use of low-quality gasoline can cause engine failure, so it is recommended to buy fuel at gas stations where high fuel quality is guaranteed.

It is strictly contraindicated to mix gasoline with motor oil for cars, since it is not at all intended for such purposes. Compliance with the number of proportions, as well as the use of quality materials will extend the life of your tool for many years.

The most correct decision is to follow the recommendations indicated in the instructions for the product! In the absence of such an opportunity, you can use the special fuel preparation formula.

Formula

  • Qualitative fuels and lubricants;
  • Correct proportions;
  • Tools and mixing technology.

Fuel quality

If you want the tool to do its job perfectly and last for more than one year, you must provide it with the proper quality fuel and lubricants.

Petrol

According to experts, it is necessary to use unleaded fuel with an octane rating exceeding 90. The gasoline A92 and AI92 are considered ideal. You can use the 95th, but there is an opinion that it is better to refrain from this kind of gasoline, since some of them are made on the basis of the 92nd with the addition of additives. The latter, in turn, although harmless to 4-stroke automotive engines, but they will be superfluous for the “sensitive” mechanisms of 2-stroke engines.

Gasoline for a chainsaw is recommended to use fresh, because when stored in cans, fuel can lose octane properties.

Oil

According to the international classification, oils of the following markings are used for chainsaws:

  • Use oil only for 2-stroke engines;
  • Do not use the material after the expiration date;
  • It is strictly forbidden to add mining (it contains many unnecessary impurities. Harmful to the central mechanism of the chainsaw);
  • Do not use chain lubricant (for each device: chain and engine. It is its own);
  • The use of synthetics or semi-synthetics is preferable (during mining, it almost does not form combustion products, but the price of such a material is higher than that of mineral oils).

Proportions

There are several options for the ratio of fuel and lubricant. As a rule, this number ranges from 20 to 50 ml of oil per 1 liter of gasoline.

We repeat, it is necessary to follow the instructions for the product or the recommendations indicated on the oil label (priority of the instruction). For lack of such, before you dilute gasoline, you need to pay attention to the power indicator of the product, since the created proportion directly depends on it.

For chainsaws with power:

  • Up to 1.5 kW, the recommended ratio of 25 ml of oil per 1 liter of gasoline;
  • Above 1.5 kW 20ml / L.

In gasoline for a chainsaw, the addition of oil is allowed slightly more than the recommended proportions (up to 5 ml per 1 liter). In this case, you should be extremely careful, because non-observance of proportions can lead to breakage, and as a result, costly repairs.

If you dilute gasoline with a large volume of oil, then during the operation the number of shock loads on the cylinder-piston system will be increased, and soot may form, as a result of which the CGP will fail.

Adding a small amount of oil to gasoline for a chainsaw can lead to insufficient lubrication of the surfaces of moving elements, which will lead to additional friction of the elements and their heating, followed by failure of the entire mechanism.

Technology

Not only the quality and proportion of fuels and lubricants is important (although it is dominant in this matter), but where and how (how) gasoline is diluted with oil for chainsaws.

The technology involves the use of tanks with graduated divisions, some brands (along with chainsaws and oil) produce containers for mixing and storing fuel. Made of special non-combustible material, they are available in canister or bottle forms, often endowed with measured fishing lines, and some of them have two entrances (separate for each type of fuel and lubricants).

Often, improvised means are used for mixing:

  • Plastic / glass bottles;
  • Syringe (without needle);
  • Measuring glasses;

When using household products, be extremely careful, since during the mixing process when combustible material interacts with the surface of non-specialized containers, static electricity can arise. This is fraught with explosion. In the manufacture of the mixture, oil is added to gasoline, since it has a higher density.

Storage

It is recommended that a small amount of fuel be diluted without surplus. It is impossible to store such a mixture for a long time (the properties of gasoline are lost), up to a maximum of 25-30 days. Upon completion of work, it will not be superfluous to drain the remaining fuel and idle to work out its resource. This is because storing the mixture in the product tank increases the wear of the seals.

Remember, the use of high-quality fuel and compliance with the manufacturer’s recommendations guarantee a long and fruitful operation of the product.
