How to adjust the carburetor on a Husqvarna 137 chain saw

Chainsaw malfunctions and ways to fix them

Owners of Husqvarna 142 often encounter typical breakdowns caused by improper use of a garden tool or trivial wear and tear of its parts.

These faults include:

  • Lack of chain saw starting. the cause of this malfunction is flooding of the spark plug. To be able to start the motor of the saw, you need to remove, rinse and dry the spark plug. After that you need to purge the cylinder by pulling the starter rope sharply several times with the spark plug turned out. After that, you need to screw in the spark plug and start the motor of the garden tool;
  • increased vibration when the saw is running. repair of this failure is done by cleaning or replacing the muffler. You will also need to inspect the springs of the anti-vibration system. If necessary, the sagging parts should be replaced;
  • popping noises. if you hear a loud popping noise when your Husqvarna model is running, the problem is in the carburetor or muffler. First the operator will need to adjust the carburetor. After that you need to remove and flush the muffler;
  • Oil leakage for chain lubrication. to fix this defect it is necessary to check the condition of the oil pump and tubes. The faulty part will need to be replaced.

To avoid further breakdowns Husqvarna 142 chain saw, it is necessary to use quality gasoline and oil to fill it up. This will help prevent excessive wear of parts and protect model components from overheating.

Works are performed according to the table of possible malfunctions.

So, if the saw won’t start, the reason is in the fuel system. When the tool stalls in the process of work, the Husqvarna 137 chain saw repair may be limited to cleaning the muffler from fouling.

How to adjust the carburetor

Initial adjustment of the carburetor is made at the manufacturer for standard fuel parameters, based on operation in summer conditions. Changes in settings are caused by vibration in the wood sawing process or by the use of a poor-quality fuel mixture. Tuning the carburetor of a chainsaw is performed in cases where the engine is unstable, does not start or glows under load.

To make the repair of the carburetor with their own hands, you need to have these tools:

The following methods are used to restore operation of the product:

  • Cleaning of clogged ducts with wire.
  • Adjustment of tension of a cable of a gas valve drive.
  • Removing faulty diaphragm and installing new part.
  • Seal connections.
  • Replacing the gasket.

After troubleshooting, fine tune the unit by turning the L (crankshaft RPM), T (idle), and H (fuel volume) bolts.

How to disassemble and assemble a chainsaw

Disassemble the product in this sequence:

  • Remove handles.
  • Loosen housing bolts, remove covers.
  • Dismantle guide bar, remove chain saw sprocket.
  • Disconnect starter.
  • Unscrew the flywheel.
  • Remove clutch and oil pump drive.
  • Disconnect the muffler carburetor and ignition coil.
  • Disassemble the engine.

Reassemble the machine in reverse order.

The best advice I can give you is to call a professional! Believe me for very little money experts will adjust the carburetor, check the overall condition of the saw. But if you still need to adjust the carburetor on the Husqvarna 137 on your own, I’ll try to describe the process in detail. Also at the end of this post I’ve added a video on how to adjust the carburetor on the chain saw at idle speed.

Adjusting and tuning the Husqvarna 137 carburetor

In the picture above you see three screws for adjustment. Each of them has a different purpose:

The T screw is needed to adjust idle speed.

The L screw is used to adjust low rpm.

First, with the L screw (turning it), we are looking for the highest rpm at idle. After we have found them, it is necessary to turn this screw a quarter turn counterclockwise. If the chain continues to rotate in this position, then by turning the screw T we bring it to a stop.

Then warm up the engine at full throttle for about 10-15 seconds and turn the screw H a quarter counterclockwise. Wait 10 seconds and listen. The engine should sound like a 4-stroke. If there is a squealing sound, the mixture is lean (turn the screw out), if there is smoking, the mixture is enriched (turn the screw in).

After adjustment of low and high revolutions we set the idling speed with the screw T. This is done as follows:

2.Turn screw T clockwise until the chain starts to turn.

3.Turn the screw to the other side until the chain stops.

If your carburetor is properly adjusted, your chain saw will pick up speed quickly and will sound like a four-stroke engine.

Remember that you need a tachometer and experience to properly adjust the carburetor of a chainsaw. That’s why it’s better to call a service center!

How to install the repair kit?

If the problem touched the carburetor nozzle, you can try with your own hands to fix a serious problem. But the manufacturer recommends only replacing this nuisance.

To remove the carburetor you need to completely clean the saw from sawdust and shavings. It is necessary to use a compressor and a compressed air gun. Next, unscrew the filter cover and remove the filter element. After that, disconnect all actuators and throttle linkages from the Husqvarna carburetor. The carburetor can now be removed from the saw.

Next, you need to completely disassemble the carburetor and replace all the elements, which the repair kit offers. Parts and gaskets. It will save you from damages in the future.

Now you know how to adjust the carburetor on the famous Husqvarna 137 chain saw.

Specifications of the Husqvarna 240 chainsaw

Husqvarna 200 40 is based on a two-stroke engine with a carburetor. Runs on gasoline and oil consistency. Engine life is increased due to improvements of crank and connecting rod assembly and special cylinder coating. 20% lower fuel consumption thanks to the innovative X-Torq system, which also lowers exhaust emissions. Large fuel tank and low fuel consumption let you run the tool for longer, without refueling.

Otherwise, the saw has the following technical features

  • two litres of capacity. с.;
  • chain pitch. 3/8 inch;
  • Fuel tank capacity of 300 ml;
  • oil tank. two hundred ml;
  • The length of the bar is 40 cm;
  • weight. 4.7 kg.

How to adjust it correctly

For this purpose in a design of the device 3 adjusting jets are provided. The idle speed adjustment screw (T) is located at the top of the carburettor. Below there is a pair of adjustment jets of fuel supply at minimum (L) and maximum (H) revolutions, the left and the right respectively.

Here’s how to adjust the carburetor on your Husqvarna chain saw:

  • Warm up for 5 minutes.
  • Turn the L screw until the engine reaches the highest rpm in an unloaded state and turn it back a quarter of a turn.
  • Hold the throttle button with one hand for 15 seconds. During this time turn the nozzle H to the right until it stops and reaches maximum rpm. After that we unscrew it back a turn and a half or until the “squeal” of the engine disappears.
  • Release the throttle and turn the idle speed screw (T) clockwise until the chain begins to move. After that turn it in the opposite direction until the chain stops moving.

In the process of adjustment, a situation may arise in which the chainsaw stalls. This can be due to excessively twisted jets, too rich or poor mixture.

If this happens, it is necessary to screw the jets of minimum and maximum revolutions up to the stop. Then turn them back a turn and a half and try to start the saw.

Setting the ignition after adjusting the carburetor

If cleaning and adjustment of the carburetor has not corrected the existing problem, it is necessary to check the spark plug and adjust the engine. It is worth acting in the following order:

  • Unscrew the plug and conduct a visual inspection. If it is dry with a light brown fouling, it can be considered serviceable.
  • If you find traces of gasoline on the spark plug, the carburetor needs to be readjusted. This occurs because it supplies an excessive amount of fuel to the engine, flooding it.
  • If the spark plug looks normal, check the work of the electrical equipment. First the cable that supplies the current to the spark plug. Its end is brought at a short distance to the grille of the cylinder and twist the starter with the cord. There should be a spark. If it is not present, the cable is checked with a tester and replaced if necessary.
  • If the cable is good, test the ignition coil. If examination does not reveal burned or broken wires, the coil is probed with a tester, comparing the data with the accompanying documentation. If abnormalities are detected, the unit is to be replaced with a similar one.

After replacing the coil block, the ignition coil gap should be set. The gap between the ignition coil and the flywheel should be between 0.2 and 0.4 mm. To determine the gap, use a feeler gauge or use foil of a suitable thickness. The probe is clamped between the coil and the flywheel at the time of installation, and then pulled out.

What you need to adjust the Husqvarna carburetor with your hands?

In order to properly perform the adjustment of the carburetor of a chainsaw, it is necessary to have the appropriate tools in advance.

  • The most common screwdriver used to loosen or tighten the adjustment screws;
  • A tachometer designed to count crankshaft revolutions. Has to do when adjusting the idle speed, as it is quite problematic to determine the number of revolutions per minute by ear;
  • Phillips screwdriver. You need it to be able to unscrew the screw (T);
  • A compressor with a special gun connected to it. A blower will help get rid of excess debris and dirt, as the carburetor should always be clean.

Many Husqvarna chain saws use adjustment screws with a special section. Look in advance to see which ones you have installed and buy the appropriate kit. This will help avoid a lot of difficulties in the initial stages.
