How To Assemble A Lawn Mowers Starter

How to repair a trimmer starter How to repair a trimmer starter with your own hands. How to disassemble and assemble the starter, wind the spring and replace the cord.

The device and principle of operation of the starter on the trimmer

Gas engine Is, in principle, the main part of lawn mowers. Its power lies in the range of 0.5-2.5 hp. The movement from it is transmitted to the shaft, which is inside the hollow rod, and then through a gearbox consisting of gears, already a fishing line or knife (working body).

Also, lawn mowers have the following elements:

  • Protective casing;
  • Lever;
  • Belt designed for the convenience of using the device;
  • A starter used to start a gasoline internal combustion engine.

All parts of the lawn mower are presented in the photo below.

The trimmer starter is the integral part that starts the engine. He is shown separately in the two photos below.

Starter mechanisms for various models of lawn mowers work on the same principle: during the start of the internal combustion engine, the protrusions marked with 1 in the photo above engage with the pawls 3. When the engine starts to work, they return to their previous position due to the influence of centrifugal force. The wires 2 also play a similar role.

The process of returning the elements of the mechanism to their original position occurs due to the presence of a spring wound around the axis. It unfolds when the rope is pulled. After releasing the cord, it is pulled in and wound up due to the coiling of the spring. During the start-up of the internal combustion engine, lawn mowers, the starting mechanism turns its shaft until it starts to work (starts).

Today, gasoline lawn mowers equip starter mechanisms of two types:

  • Manual;
  • Electric.

The first option is much more common.

The trimmer starter can operate without breakage for a long time. It is impossible to clearly indicate the period of uptime. Everything is determined by the initial quality of the device and compliance with the rules for handling it.

Spring tension

After installing the spring, tighten it. To do this, perform the following actions:

  • Remove the handle from the starter cord;
  • Then the rope is inserted into the reel groove;
  • Tension the spring by rotating the coil in the opposite direction to the clockwise direction (winding);
  • Make the required number of revolutions specified in the operating instructions for the trimmer used and corresponding to the length of the cord used;
  • At the very end, the rope is threaded into the hole intended for this, located in the starter cover;
  • Put the handle in place, fixing it with a knot.

If after repair the spring continues to fly, then you can get rid of this in the following ways:

  • Squeeze a piece of the plate suitable in size into the groove at the location of the spring hook;
  • Drill holes on both sides of the groove in the spool, into which to insert the spring hook and fix it with a wire.

Starter assembly

The assembly of the starter unit is carried out in a number of stages:

  • The coil is turned over, setting it so that the spring bend fits exactly into the groove of the body, as in the photo below;
how to assemble a lawn mowers starter
  • Two washers are laid, between which a spring is placed;
  • Put in place the cup with the antennae;
  • Tighten the screw (photos below).

When doing the above manipulations, it is imperative put two washers. If this is not done, then the spring will damage the plastic cup over time, and when it is pulled, wedging will begin. Because of this, there is a feeling as if the spring has flown off. To eliminate this drawback, you need to install this part of a greater length or an additional washer.

When such parts are not available, you can just unscrew the screw, and the starter assembly will start working without wedging. But this option is temporary. It is better to repair it with high quality as soon as possible.

How to put a spring on a chainsaw starter?

Fitting the spring into the correct groove is a tricky task. First of all, the part will need to be twisted, returning it to its previous dimensions. After that, it must be inserted into the cavity of the standard drum hub. To fill the spring in the chainsaw starter, you need to proceed in this order:

  1. The outer end of the spring used must be fixed in a special stop lug. In this case, the second end with a screwdriver will need to be installed opposite the standard hole inside the lock;
  2. Next, the loop located at the inner end of the standard spring should be aligned with the hole. It is best to use a screwdriver for this. When the ends are aligned, the disc will need to be lowered;
  3. After mounting the disc, you need to check that the dog of the factory ratchet mechanism of the chainsaw is in its original place. Then you can assemble the ratchet in the reverse order.

To wind the spring on the chainsaw starter, you need to take into account all the holes and notches available. After installation, you will need to tighten the spring. As soon as the slack is eliminated, the spring will remain wound a few turns. This is necessary to maintain the required tension of the installed part.

Chainsaw starter device

As standard, the chainsaw starter consists of a number of parts.

These include:

  • Coil;
  • Cable;
  • The frame to which the return spring is attached;
  • A pen.

A protective cover is installed on top of all elements of the starter. The original principle of operation of most triggers is also almost the same. In a special groove in the chainsaw body there is a handle that holds the cable. When the handle is raised sharply, the latter is understood. At this moment, the ratchet is triggered, which, through the drum, transfers the force to another drum with splines located on the engine shaft.

When the standard cable is pulled out, the chainsaw motor shaft starts to rotate, which leads to compression of the existing fuel mixture located at this time between the cylinder head and the standard piston.

With an increase in the volume of the internal combustion engine cylinder, the amount of consumed fuel mixture, which is required for its future ignition, also increases. Consequently, the operator of a powerful saw needs more jerking strokes than the owner of a low power tool. To increase the speed at which the drum returns to its original position, manufacturers of powerful chainsaws use resilient return springs.

The starter is one of the most important mechanisms in any modern chainsaw. It is on him that the engine start of the tool depends on all weather conditions. The chainsaw starter stands out for its simple design, it is easy to maintain and repair it yourself. However, in order to fix the breakdown, you must first find its cause. To do this, most often it is required to completely disassemble the standard mechanism.

The recoil starter for lawn mowers or petrol trimmers is a mechanical unit that includes a pulley fitted to a ratchet. A rope is wound on the pulley in the initial position. At the start, it is pulled outward. The pulley is spring loaded. As soon as you let go of the end of the rope, it will reel back. A flat strip rolled into a ring is used as a spring. It resembles a spring in a large mechanical watch that is wound once a day. The starter itself is located more often at the rear than closer to the front end of the mower or trimmer. To correctly perform all the manipulations with the lawn mower starter, you need to know the features of the device and installation.

How do I replace or replace the starter spring?

If everything is in order with the rope on the starter, suspicion falls on the reel itself. It is activated by a ribbon spring, coiled into a roll. Certain steps must be taken to change the spring.

  1. Remove the starter from the lawn mower.
  2. Remove the starter coil.
  3. Unscrew the main bolt holding the pulley to the housing.
  4. Pull out the gripping tendrils and spring, the ribbon spring is almost fully extended or coiled into larger rings.
  5. Hold it in advance.
  6. Check if the spring is intact (there may be rusty streaks, cracks, etc.). If the hooks at its ends are broken, it will not be possible to bend new ones. High-carbon steel breaks when you try to bend it. Loose hooks are suitable for slight bending.
  7. Make sure the auxiliary (regular) spring and washers are in place. These parts protect the coil body from being punctured by the ends of the main spring. If the washers and the spring are broken, and new ones are not available, do not tighten the coil bolt tightly, but watch it. It can unscrew and get lost.
  8. If the main (flat) spring is damaged, insert the same new one. Place the hook on the end of the spring in place and bend it, inserting coil by coil into the space it should be.

The rewinding of the spring takes a minute. Dexterity in this action is acquired quickly.

How does a lawn mower or trimmer starter work?

The starter is a generally single and universal mechanism for lawn mowers, trimmers, gasoline and diesel generator sets. It is not a problem to equip them even with a car, motorcycle or scooter, if your vehicle has free space for its installation. It was not for nothing that many Soviet cars and trucks were equipped with a starter tool that remotely resembles a crowbar bent twice.

The starter assembly has the following parts:

  • Hook ignition spring;
  • Cord wound on a reel;
  • Return spring;
  • Ratchet drive and main spring;
  • Mechanism housing protecting the ratchet;
  • Locking bolt.
