- Measure the stator winding resistance value. If there is no resistance, it can be declared a fault.
- If the stator cables are perfectly all right, they are checked for a possible ground fault in the same way as for the stator.

Grass trimmer disassembly and repair

The bearing design, by the way, was not to my liking. Plastic parts do not inspire confidence. I compare it to a Soviet-made 300-watt drill, which I’ve used for about thirty years, loading it intensively with. Drilling holes in concrete with consecutive use of a boring bar and other modes of operation.
Metal bearings never failed there. From the intensive work gradually only the collector and the brushes wore out.
Preparing the circuit
A tester is needed for this work. Disconnecting the electrical circuits on the trimmer is simple. The terminals on the motor, wires, and the micturator are the same.
Checking the operation of the microswitch and its wires
Tester in ohmmeter mode. The circuit of the electric motor was not disassembled. The wire with the crocodile planted on the random contact of the plug of the power cord, and passed the homemade probe on the conclusions of the micro switch. The tester showed different resistance readings.
It is already possible to make a preliminary conclusion that the part of wires is not broken, and the friction switch is in the disconnected position. During operation it switched on the motor. Let’s check this moment.
Crocodile stays on the plug, I hold the probe on the contact of the microswitch showing a break and close the contact by pressing the button. It is not easy to do, because you still have to take pictures with one hand.
Turning on the button showed zero resistance, indicating that the switch is working.
Checking the working circuit of the grass trimmer motor
The tester stays in the ohmmeter mode. One of its leads connected with a clothespin to the second contact of the power plug, and the other. through the crocodile to the contact of the microswitch on the motor side.
Active resistance of measured electrical circuit was 9 Ohm. Its magnitude is determined:
There is no obvious circuit breakage inside the circuit. This is also evidenced by the fact that the grass trimmer was initially turned on. But, something makes it disconnect under load.
There are only two such switching devices with power contacts in the circuit diagram of the grass trimmer:
Actually, the possibility remains that the friction switch is disconnected from the load. But knowing its structure and fixing the contact in the on-position by a mechanical hold on the fingers, you can safely assume that the cause is not in it. That leaves the second element with a power contact.
If you carefully look at the connection diagram of the windings, it can be seen that in series with one of them is included some small plastic box located on the winding. One wire goes in and another comes out. The body is labeled and labeled 110 degrees Celsius.
This is a protective relay, which at normal temperature keeps the power contact closed, and at critical heat opens it. I assume that something inside it broke, began to work improperly, from the jolting opens contact.
Decided to take it out of service while testing. Removed a small piece of insulation from its wires to begin with.
Then I just twisted those wires. Shunted the trip contact this way. I took over the control of the motor temperature. I check it periodically by touch, even without that. Never felt the heat. Power of 800 watts is more than enough to cut the grass with the fishing line even for a long time.
Wrapped a piece of old duct tape around the bypass and installed the thermostat under the mounting bracket as before.
