How to charge a DEKO electric screwdriver.

Why the electric screwdriver battery may not charge

In recent decades, cordless tools have conquered even those niches where the dominance of conventional power tools seemed unshakable. Even impact drills are made with portable battery power, not to mention conventional screwdrivers. Despite the overall high reliability of cordless tools, the weakest point is still the batteries, as well as, to some extent, the chargers to them. Having found that the battery of a portable electric screwdriver does not charge, it is necessary to localize the malfunction and decide to repair or replace the faulty unit.

Some of the most common causes of battery failure include:

  • Corrosion and oxidation of the contacts due to storage in high humidity;
  • Deeply discharged due to prolonged non-use;
  • Life span of charge-discharge cycles has expired;
  • Lithium-ion batteries may have internal control circuitry failure;
  • High loss of capacity due to the “memory effect” in batteries prone to this phenomenon;
  • Drying out of the electrolyte during prolonged use or storage;
  • mechanical damage (including internal) due to shocks to the battery.

Chargers often lose their ability to function due to:

  • corrosion and oxidation of the contacts, caused by the same reasons;
  • concealed breakage of the power cord (most often near the case or plug);
  • Internal components failure;
  • bent contacts due to mechanical impact.

To decide whether to attempt to restore the batteries and recharge unit, it is important to determine the true cause of the malfunction.

Dear friends, I present to you a selective list of my works:

Cordless drill-driver DEKO 12V GCD12DU3 SET 3-Li-ion in the case toolbox 13 pieces, 32Nm, 2×1.5Ah, s/w. review

I bought the electric screwdriver on the well-known Chinese website. Arrived quickly. I have been using it for over a year. Had time to build a gazebo, assemble a kitchen and a bunch of other little things. For everyday use, it’s perfect. For professional use is probably not suitable, if only as a 2-3 tool. The tooling in the kit is not the best, enough for once, wood drill bits are ok. Given the price can forget about the tooling and eventually change it.

Hello dear friends! My name is. Alexander. Feel free to ask questions, discussions arise, I will try to answer all, though with a caveat. As far as employment! Just today I was wondering: How to choose a cordless screwdriver drill? I will reply to this at the end of the review.

Hello all! I bought this electric screwdriver a while ago, about 4 months ago. Before buying it, read more than one review, and as it turned out, not a few positive reviews, and also pleased with the price, bought on Citilink for 2380r, a pretty great price for it.

Hello dear friends! Before I start my work, let me introduce myself. My name is Alexander. Do not hesitate to ask questions, I’m happy to answer them, really if you have free time.

Normal screwdriver, costs pennies well-equipped, yes bits of course already bald but still twist. Bought for fixing the siding. Worked with small screws, the battery lasts for a long time in this situation. Charging is fast about an hour, plus there is a spare battery.

I bought the electric screwdriver in 2020 to help more expensive brand screwdriver Bosch GSR 180. And I can say I was not disappointed at all. Before buying a bit afraid of the new Chinese brand, had bought a laser level under the brand DEKO, was very pleased with the quality and.

DEKO Electric Cordless Screwdriver

I am wary of products from China. But for a long time looked for exactly this format: an electric screwdriver and tools in a suitcase. Unfortunately, the big name brands have not found such kits. This drill-shuropower for a long time I had in the “pending” in a personal account vildberiz.

I decided to buy an inexpensive electric screwdriver-drill for home needs. It is very convenient that this device combines two functions. Can drill and screw self-tapping screws. After reading reviews of different budget screwdrivers, in terms of price. quality ratio, I decided to choose this particular one.

Cordless Electric Drill Driver DEKO DKCD12FU-Li. review

I bought an electric screwdriver in 2020 to replace the more expensive Bosch GSR 180 brand screwdriver. And I can say that I was not disappointed. Before buying, I was a little afraid of the new Chinese brand. Before I bought a laser level under the brand DEKO, was very pleased with the quality and functionality, and therefore decided to continue to trust this brand and bought an electric wrench DEKO DKCD12FU-Li

DEKO brand products are produced by ZIRTEK company, which is based in Czech Republic, but the production is located in several countries. China, Russia, Hungary, Croatia. the electric screwdriver of this model comes in different complete sets. I bought the set with the case, two batteries, charger and tool kit.

In general, as it turned out later, the case. only takes up space, never used it. The tool set, namely the bit and drill set are of pretty low quality. The drill bits are soft, but only good for wood. The drill bits are so soft that you can even bend them. If anyone does not know, a normal drill bit made of high-speed or tool steel. it does not bend, but breaks at high force, but it is hard enough and wear-resistant.

Also with the electric screwdriver came a plastic box with a set of nails, dowels, washers and screws. I threw it all away, because the set was of such low-quality and unnecessary stuff, I would never use it.

If to use the electric screwdriver seldom, most likely, it will be convenient to store it in the case, but I use it almost every day for two years, and therefore about the case as that I have forgotten. I only got it now for a photo shoot. The fact that the electric screwdriver in almost daily use has worked for two years, indicates a good quality of the model itself.

The stated torque of 28 Nm most likely does not correspond to reality, it feels like the real torque is about 20 Nm. When the torque is exceeded, the engine of an electric screwdriver simply stops, goes into flow protection, such a stop strongly depletes the battery. During the start of the motor, as well as during the maximum torque, the motor is under extreme strain; when the rotor is stopped, the current in the winding tends to short-circuit current, and therefore the battery is strongly discharged. But the torque is exceeded quite rarely and it is even possible to feel intuitively that the screwdriver is heavy and it is time to reduce the load.

The capacity of the lithium ion battery is 2000 mAh as it is declared by the manufacturer and I think it is a little bit high, but it is hard to say for sure, I will have to take some measurements. In principle, one battery lasts for 25-40 minutes of continuous operation. At first one of the batteries in my kit drained very quickly, then somehow it worked longer.

The battery size is standard for Chinese screwdrivers, now on sale of many models from other manufacturers with the same battery. Battery voltage is 12 volts.

The charger plug has a 5 mm jack, kind of like the old Nokia. By the way this charger is also suitable for other devices such as a projector and a DEKO laser level.

On the sides of the battery has latches that securely fasten the battery to the screwdriver, by pushing on the latches you can easily remove the battery for replacement or charging.

The charger is very compact. I don’t know how good it is that it is similar to a cell phone charger but I like its compactness, it does not take a lot of space like other electric screwdrivers chargers. But for such a compact size, the charger can not charge at high currents, so it charges at a low current and therefore takes a long time. Charge indication on the charger when the battery is charging. the light is red when the battery is charged. green.

There is no information about the current and output voltage on the charger, only the frequency and the input voltage of 110-240 V/50-60 HZ. Judging by the charging time of one battery, which is about two hours (although the passport of the charging time is 1 hour), we can conclude that the power supply unit gives about 1 amp to charge the battery.

It has a quick-change chuck with a plastic case. The maximum diameter of the clamp is up to 11mm, although according to the certificate. 10mm. The cartridge clamps perfectly, does not jam, does not bump when rotating, easy to unclamp and clamp the tool.

This model has two speed modes. 1st down range 0-350 rpm and 2nd up range 0-1350 rpm. The speed can be changed by means of the switch on top of the electric screwdriver.

What you can build a power supply with

The power supply for charging an electric screwdriver can be made according to various schemes. It all depends on the skill, availability of tools and materials.

From a computer power supply

Not a bad power supply for an electric screwdriver at 12 volts can be obtained from a PSU for a computer. First you need to check if it fits the parameters.

In this example, the PSU has two 12 V channels, one for 11 A and one for 13 A. Each channel is enough to supply your chosen 12 volt power tool. On the Internet you can find tips on how to connect the channels in parallel until you get the total current (24 A in this case). This is not recommended, because of the difference in voltage, one channel can become a consumer for the other. All risk is the owner’s choice. A loop of wires comes out of the power supply. You have to cut all but:

Sometimes you have to leave the red wire as well. some circuits require a base load. To do this, you must connect a 12 volt light bulb between the red and any black. If in its absence the PSU does not turn off, then you can remove it. The green wire must be connected to any black wire. And take 12 volts from the yellow and black (any) wires.

From the transformer

If a proper transformer is available, you can use it to construct your power supply. A general schematic diagram of a non-stabilized power supply is shown in the following diagram. Such a device consists of:

If there is a prefabricated industrial transformer, you need to find its data in the reference book. If you are satisfied with it you can build your PSU with it. If not, it can be rebuilt after first making sure that it is suitable for the required conditions. The suitability of a transformer is determined by its capacity. If to set the output current of 10 A, voltage 14 V and efficiency of the system (from the transformer to the output shaft of the electric screwdriver) equal to 0.5, you need a transformer with capacity P=10 A14 V/0.5=280 W (you can round up to 300 W).

To determine the transformer’s iron power you need to find the cross sectional area of its core in centimeters (in most cases you can get the dimensions without disassembly). The resulting area in square centimeters Sc should be substituted in the formula:

If the result is more than 300W, the transformer is suitable for making a power supply. Next you need to remove all the secondary windings and wind a new one. The number of turns can be determined experimentally. To do this, wind any known number of turns with any wire and measure the output voltage. Let’s say, having wound 10 turns, you get 5 volts at the output. So, for one volt there are two windings, and to get 14 volts you must wind 28 turns. For 10 amps the wire cross section should be at least 2.5 square.mm, this corresponds to a thickness of 1.8 mm.

After making the transformer it is necessary to choose diodes, which are able to work with the selected current. They should be placed on heat sinks. And lastly, install a smoothing capacitor. It must be rated for at least 25 volts and have a capacity of 4000-10000 uF (more is possible, but the dimensions will increase). For such tasks transformer power supply turns out to be quite bulky and heavy.

It can be supplemented with a voltage regulator, then it will keep torque at any load (but this is not necessary. in normal mode, the batteries also sag at high currents).

You can build a regulator on a 78ХХ series integrated circuits (79ХХ for the negative arm) by recharging it with an external transistor.

Important! Linear stabilizer works at a certain excess of input voltage before the output voltage, so in this case you will need a transformer with an output voltage of 17.18 volts. The overall power must also be increased. the overall efficiency of the circuit will decrease. That’s something to consider when selecting or making them.

Ready-made power supply should be placed in a case. You can make it yourself or find a ready-made.

From a laptop

You can get good results using a laptop power supply. Such devices are designed for an output voltage of 19 volts and for different current loads. You can pick up source that gives up to 6 amps, this is enough for most domestic work. Do not overload such source. will trigger the protection or self-resetting fuse at the input (self-restoring it is not always restored, and it must be replaced).

Universal power supply

To power an electric screwdriver, you can use regulated and unregulated DC power supplies, such as those used in laboratories. Their advantage is that the output voltage can be adjusted, and set, depending on the model of power tools, both 12 V and 18 V. The problem is that it’s hard to find a lab voltage source rated for 10A output current. So, the unit shown in the photo for each channel has a current limit of just over 3A. The voltage is then about zero, so the electric screwdriver cannot operate in this mode. This power supply will provide idle running of the power tool at best.

HOW MUCH IS THIS DRILL?? @DEKO TOOLS

Impulse source

The best choice is a switching power supply. light, compact, does not contain a powerful heavy transformer due to the fact that the voltage level conversion occurs at a higher frequency. The disadvantage is the complicated circuitry. To make a pulser with your own hands, you need a certain qualification.

Revitalizing a Ni-Cd battery

Screwdrivers with nickel cadmium batteries are practically a thing of the past. But they are still on sale, meet and even work, because the Ni-Cd cells can “live” up to 20-25 years, although they withstand about 900 cycles “charge/discharge”. Another feature of nickel-cadmium batteries is that they can be stored in a discharged state. So if you found in the attic grandfather’s electric screwdriver with Ni-Cd battery, it makes sense to try to revive it.

Let’s try to charge the battery. Any battery charger capable of supplying the necessary voltage and current equal to half of the battery capacity will do.

For Ni-Cd cells this charging current is normal. They can easily withstand the current equal to their capacity, and even twice as much.

We turn it on, we try to charge it. If the battery takes a charge, continue. If not and it has a hollow zero, go to plan “G” and “P” (cf. below).

As soon as the voltage of the battery reaches 1.37 V multiplied by the number of batteries, we stop the process. But that’s not all. It is not certain that the battery is fully charged. Nickel-cadmium batteries suffer from the so-called memory effect. If they were constantly discharged, say, to 60% and then put on charge, they will get used to it and then refuse to work when discharged to the same 60%. So discharge our battery with about the same current as you charged it. Let’s discharge it to the value of 1 V, multiplied by the number of accumulators. Car lamps or the electric screwdriver itself can be used as a load.

After that fully charge again. Repeat the “charge/discharge” operation 3-4 times. Fully charge and try out the electric screwdriver. If even after all these manipulations the battery capacity is much less than it is declared, then, unfortunately, we have a decrepit, obsolete old man. It can not be resuscitated.

Plan “G”, pushing

Plan “G” is to “push” the battery with short (0.2-0.3 sec) with high current pulses. And the current should be much (tens of times) greater than the battery capacity. It is better to “push” each battery separately. So we open the battery, find out where the plus and minus of each battery. As a pusher we will use the car battery, but any other powerful source of 10-15 V will do.

Connect the minus of our element to the minus of the “pusher”, connect one end of the wire to the plus of the “pusher”, and the other end briefly touch the plus end of the Ni-Cd-element. The frequency of touching is 2-3 per second. As a result of such burning the dendrites that caused the microcircuits are eliminated and the battery comes to life.

While touching, please make sure that the cable is not welded to the battery terminal. In general it’s better to touch not the wire but let’s say the head of the screw on which the wire is screwed. And do not forget about the protective glasses!

charge, deko, electric, screwdriver

Do it for about 5-6 seconds. Putting it on charge. If the process has started, we eliminate the memory effect (see “The memory effect” on page 54). above). Trying to use.

Plan “P”, refill

This plan is effective at electrolyte degradation, because during the operation there is an oxidation process with the flow of water. And the plan is the following:

  • Make a hole in the body with a microdrill.
  • Pour one cc of distilled water into the hole with a syringe.
  • We wait for an hour, then we “push” the cell with high current pulses.
  • Let’s charge it. We wait 24 hours and measure the voltage.
  • If voltage is normal, seal the hole with sealant or solder.
  • If dropped or the cell did not want to take the charge, go to point 2 and do so until there is nowhere to pour water.

If it did not help, then you can read the articles “How to convert a cordless electric screwdriver to 12 or 18 V mains with your own hands” and “How to make a power supply for an electric screwdriver”. Better than having to put your power tool back in the attic.

We figured out how to charge an electric screwdriver battery without a native “charger”. Now even if the “charger” of your electric screwdriver is burned out, drowned, lost or stolen, you will find a way out.

Features of the battery charging

How to properly charge an electric screwdriver battery so that it lasts as long as possible?

Batteries must be recharged before first use because they are discharged during storage. In order to maximize the battery capacity of an electric screwdriver battery, it is recommended that the nickel-cadmium cell be charged and then discharged three times. Therefore, since a new battery has incomplete capacity, it must be brought up to full operating capacity. Batteries must then be recharged as soon as their capacity is at a minimum. Lithium ion batteries are easier to use. They have no memory effect, so you may not run them out completely and charge them when convenient.

When charging, you need to consider the optimum temperature for the process. It is better to keep the ambient temperature above ten degrees and not to exceed forty. Batteries sometimes become hot during charging, but this should not be the case, as overheating has a negative effect on their performance and they need to be cooled. It is not advisable to leave the battery in the charger. And it’s better to store them disconnected from the screwdriver, separately from the tool. Batteries should be recharged once a month when not in use for extended periods of time.

It is better to buy rechargeable batteries at specialized outlets. Using them correctly will help to prolong their working life. It is undesirable to fully discharge the cells at work, until the engine stops. A markedly reduced performance is an indication that they need recharging.

Types of chargers

The screwdriver comes with one or two batteries and a battery charger. Nowadays, the trend among power tool manufacturers is to sell their products without batteries. This marketing trick makes buyers buy a manufacturer’s model that they already have in their arsenal. In any case, if the battery is purchased, even separately, you can get a charger to it. It’s still a matter of mechanical design. one manufacturer’s charging wire probably won’t fit another manufacturer’s.

Almost always the recharger is optimized for the particular type of battery, charges it in the most favorable current mode, and stops charging automatically at the end of the process. That’s why when you buy the charger and the batteries of one manufacturer you can not think about compatibility if the charger is designed for the same type and manufacturer of batteries.

Most chargers are sold in pulsed form. But for nickel cadmium batteries there are chargers that are considered professional (the price is appropriate). These are called pulse-reverse. For each positive pulse they give off a small amplitude negative polarity shot. This eliminates the memory effect inherent to Ni Cd batteries and preserves their capacity.

Non-standard methods of charging an electric screwdriver battery

It also happens that the “native” charger from an electric tool is either lost or fails, and to get the same. very problematic. Many people ask if the battery can be charged properly by connecting it to any other power source.

Of course, this can be done. And such ways of charging will not do any harm to the battery, if you are well acquainted with the characteristics of the tool itself and any other charger that can serve as an alternative source of power for the battery.

In order to find the right alternative battery charger for your screwdriver, you need to know its voltage and capacity settings. These are usually found on the outer casing of the tool. Also pay attention to polarity. It can be different, depending on the manufacturer. This is very important in order to properly connect the battery to the charger.

The following is used to determine which battery charger is the right one. For example, we have an 18-volt electric screwdriver with a 2 Ah battery capacity. So, the charger should be able to deliver the same voltage and the power would be enough 200 milliamps per hour. because it takes a long time to fully charge such a battery. It is best to use a battery charger with current control, charging the battery for 6-7 hours.

You can use small alligator clips to energize the battery. And to make sure the contact is good, you can additionally secure them with metal wires.

If there is such a possibility, try to charge the battery of an electric screwdriver with a car charger. It is important to remember that the voltage in this case should be set to the minimum. Determine the polarity of the battery and the auto charger (as mentioned above, it may be different). Then connect the car charger terminals directly to the battery. Sometimes you also have to use extra “fixers” in the form of paper clips or flexible metal plates for optimum contact.

After such simple manipulations, all you need to do is to plug in the device and carefully monitor the charging process. 15 to 20 minutes is a good start. and when the charged battery of an electric screwdriver has increased heat dissipation, the charger should be disconnected.

charge, deko, electric, screwdriver

Recently it became very popular to change the batteries in an electric screwdriver from cadmium batteries to lithium ones, especially among professional technicians who use an electric screwdriver regularly. The battery charging time in this case will also depend on the type of charger. If you have a regular “regular” charger, the battery may take 3 to 7 hours to charge. And if you can afford a modern pulse charger, a little over an hour will be enough to make the battery operational.
