How To Cut A Propane Cylinder

Who conducts it

The decision to write off a fire extinguisher in production is taken by the person responsible for fire safety. If such a person is not assigned, then the facility manager is responsible for the write-off.

Attention! Disposal of devices can only be carried out by those companies that have a license from the Ministry of Emergency Situations for the installation and service of primary fire extinguishing equipment. Nevertheless, the disassembly of devices in enterprises can be carried out at your own peril and risk.

Foam and water

The process of parsing a foam or water fire extinguisher differs little from a similar procedure for other types of devices:

  • The pressure is relieved first. It is advisable to keep a distance.
  • Next, the locking and starting device is removed.
  • After that, the remaining substance is drained into an airtight container and sent for processing to a special company. This does not apply to water. If “soft” foam is used, then it is poured down the drain, after having brought its performance to the state of household cleaning agents. In the case of “hard” blowing agents, disposal by incineration or burial is necessary.
  • The cylinder is either used again (it is pre-cleaned from rust inside), or rendered unusable.

Reasons for write-off

There are only two possible reasons for the disposal of fire extinguishers:

  • End of machine life.
  • Mechanical damage to the device and its parts.

In both cases, the fire extinguisher can be sent for technical inspection before decommissioning. A company specializing in recharging devices checks the device and finds out if the fire extinguisher is suitable for further service. The test is carried out as follows:

  • the entire charge is released from the device;
  • the cylinder is disassembled, filled and reassembled;
  • the procedure is repeated eight times, measuring the pressure in the cylinder and the rate of release of the substance.

If the device passes this test, it will continue to be used. Otherwise it will be disposed of.

How to disassemble and dispose of fire extinguishers

Before disassembling a fire extinguisher, it is necessary to take into account the features of its design and the extinguishing agent. There are many videos on the network that clearly show the whole process. The main thing when parsing a device is to make the process as safe as possible.

Classification

Fire extinguishers are classified according to two criteria: the mass of the charge and the extinguishing agent.

Different types of fire extinguishers

The mass of the charge determines the size of the device. There are two types:

  • Portable or hand held. Weight does not exceed 20 kg. Designed for one person use.
  • Transportable. The mass of such a device can be from 20 to 450 kg. As a rule, transport units are equipped with transport trolleys.

The following devices are distinguished by the type of extinguishing agent:

  • Carbon dioxide. Use carbon dioxide. They do not harm property, they are often used in museums, archives, places of accumulation of equipment. The equipment is suitable for extinguishing fires of classes A, B, C and E (with voltage limitation up to 1000 V). Nevertheless, carbon dioxide is dangerous to humans, so you only need to work with the device in a respirator and protective gloves.
  • Powder. Powder formulations are used as the active substance. Most often they are suitable for extinguishing fires of classes A, B, C, E. Powders for special purposes are used for fires of class D. Compositions can be hazardous to the human respiratory tract, therefore, before starting the device, a complete evacuation of the premises is carried out.
  • Foamy. Foam (chemical or air) is used to extinguish solid materials (A) and flammable liquids (B). A highly specialized substance, safe for humans and the environment.
  • Aquatic. They are used only on class A fires. Outdated due to their narrow specialization and short service life. water provokes metal corrosion. Safe for people.
  • Emulsion. The main substance is water with additives in a concentration of more than 1%. Such devices are used on fires of classes A, B and E. Emulsion is easily removed from the surface.
  • Freon. They are arranged by analogy with carbon dioxide devices, they also use gas as a substance. They do not harm property, they are used for fires of classes B, C and E.

Fire extinguisher. description and purpose

Almost any fire extinguisher consists of the following parts:

  • fire extinguishing agent cylinder;
  • locking and triggering mechanism;
  • ferrule;
  • siphon tube;
  • hose with nozzle or socket.

Additional equipment includes:

How to Cut Open a Propane Tank without Blowing Yourself Up

  • pressure gauge;
  • inner inert gas cylinder.

The general principle of operation of the device is as follows:

  • In the normal state, the outlet of the siphon tube is closed, and the substance is in the cylinder under the pressure of an inert gas. A safety ring protects the locking and trigger mechanism from accidental operation.
  • When the trigger is pressed, the tube outlet opens. A pressure difference appears inside the container.
  • The composition under pressure leaves the apparatus through a siphon tube, since the pressure in it is lower than in the cylinder.

There is another type of construction, when the substance is inside the container without pressure. In this case, an additional inert gas cylinder is placed inside the device. When the lever is pressed, the needle pierces the membrane of the additional cylinder, releasing gas into the main cavity. This creates the pressure required for work.

A fire extinguisher belongs to the primary means of fighting fire, and of all of them it is the most popular. The purpose can be described in several theses:

  • fire fighting before the arrival of the fire brigade;
  • localization and extinguishing of fire;
  • saving lives and property.

Carbon dioxide

Parsing a carbon dioxide device has several features. The process can be divided into stages:

  • Relief of pressure in the housing. Even in the absence of a substance in the carbon dioxide fire extinguisher, it is quite high. When bleeding the pressure, the distance between the worker and the device must be 1 meter or more.
  • Detachment of the hose and socket if they are intact.
  • Separation of the locking and trigger mechanism from the body. Parts are separated from the device with gradual depressurization.
  • Draining the remaining carbon dioxide into an airtight container. Work must be carried out in personal protective equipment. in a respirator and gloves.
  • Dismantling the locking and starting mechanism.
  • Making the balloon unusable. You can saw it on the machine or remove the thread.

The remaining substance must be disposed of in special organizations.

How to properly and safely cut an old gas cylinder

If your old propane or oxygen cylinder has fallen into disrepair, and it is a pity to throw it away, you can try using it in a subsidiary farm. The body can serve as a good blank for a stove, smokehouse, barbecue, water tank. Before that, it must be freed from gas residues and cut correctly. To do this, you need to follow a certain order of actions.

Oxygen and carbon dioxide cylinders do not pose any problems. after bleeding off the gas residues, these are ordinary pieces of iron, which are calmly cut by an angle grinder without any preliminary preparations. With propane, it is already a little more complicated, and the question often arises: how to cut a gas cylinder of an angle grinder? Even with the valve fully open, all the gas will not escape, and the remaining amount will be enough for a small explosion or fire. Therefore, the cylinder must be prepared in advance. For this we need the following tools:

  • Open-end or gas valve wrench.
  • Hacksaw for metal.
  • Funnel, watering hose, buckets or other source of water.
  • angle grinder with discs of different thicknesses and safety glasses.

After that, you can start working. We perform all actions in strict sequence to avoid undesirable consequences.

  • We bleed the gas completely by opening the valve. It is strictly forbidden to be near the outgoing jet at this moment. In addition to the fire hazard, all clothing can smell of gas. We check the presence of pressure in the cylinder using a soapy solution, soaping the valve and watching for bubbles.
  • After that, you can start unscrewing the valve. Next steps: carefully remove the pins securing the valve, and try to unscrew with a key. On old cylinders, this is not always possible, but if we are lucky, a hole with a diameter of 6 mm will open to us. If the valve does not lend itself, then we just cut it off with a hacksaw for metal. It is advisable that at this moment someone supply you with water to the place of the cut, or simply direct the jet from the hose. This is necessary to prevent the formation of sparks.
  • Now you can fill the cylinder with water through the hole obtained using a funnel or a thin hose. This is called degassing. Water is heavier than any gas, so it displaces residues and dissolves condensate. The resulting gasoline solution is non-flammable and can be safely drained.
  • It is better to drain the water not near the house, but somewhere in the landfill because of the strong and persistent smell of gas. If the valve did not cut off, and the filling went through a small hole, you can supply compressed air to the cylinder to speed up the process. It will create excess pressure and the liquid will flow out in a good stream.
  • Now that most of the liquid has been drained, you can start marking and cutting the balloon. Most often, cutting is done along the welded seams, but for an individual project, you can cut in any direction. The average wall thickness is 3–4 mm, and at the joints 5–6 mm. Any angle grinder can handle this thickness without any problems. To facilitate the work, you can first walk through the cut with a 1.6 mm thick disc, and finally cut through with a thinner disc. This prevents the disc from getting stuck at the exit and breaking it, which could lead to injury. In addition, this cutting method is more economical and faster. During work, do not forget about protective equipment.
  • Sometimes it may be necessary to remove the connecting ring between the straight and convex part. To do this, the ring itself is cut by an angle grinder in one place, and then it is cut down with a hammer and chisel.
  • The cylinder stand at the bottom is removed as follows. the angle grinder slightly notches the weld seam, usually it is secured with dots, while being careful not to damage the cylinder itself. Then the ring is knocked out with a hammer and chisel, the remnants of welding are cleaned.
  • If, after opening the cylinder, a strong smell of gas remains inside, it will need to be burned from the inside with a gas torch or blowtorch. After that, the cylinder body becomes absolutely harmless and can be used in everyday life.

The most difficult operation is over, now it is necessary to remove the old paint and rust. A flap emery attachment for the same angle grinder works well for this. Now the blank from the cylinder is ready for further priming and painting.

In this way, you can easily, and most importantly, safely cut gas cylinders of any size and type, with the exception of acetylene cylinders, consisting of a special filler.

Sometimes it is necessary to cut open an old gas cylinder in order to use it with benefit on the farm. For example, a cut gas cylinder can be used as a water reservoir in an autonomous heating system. Due to the design features, the cut cylinder is convenient for lighting a fire in it, it can serve as a hearth for a forge.

There are rules for cutting containers in which flammable materials were stored. This article, in particular, will tell you how to cut an old propane gas cylinder.

Required tools and materials:

  • Empty propane gas cylinder
  • Hacksaw for metal
  • Funnel and bucket for water or garden hose
  • Empty plastic bottle
  • angle grinder and face shield for angle grinder

Work order

  • Open the cylinder valve as far as it will go and make sure there is no gas left in it. If there is no sound of escaping gas, it is necessary to soap the valve outlet, check that all the gas has escaped.
  • Lay the bottle on its side.
  • Take a hacksaw for metal.
  • Begin to cut the brass valve of the cylinder “under the root”. Brass is easy enough to saw with a hacksaw for metal.
  • Use a friend’s help: while sawing off the valve, a second person should pour water into the sawing site from a plastic bottle or watering hose to prevent sparks.
  • Having cut the valve, fill the bottle with water. To do this, you can use a bucket (pour water through a funnel) or a long garden hose. Fill the balloon to the top.
  • As the cylinder is filled, shake it to flush the condensate from the walls.
  • After filling the cylinder, you can drain the water, but not near the house, but somewhere near the garbage dump, since the drained water sometimes emits a strong propane smell, which does not disappear for several days.
  • After all the actions performed, the cylinder is sawn by the angle grinder. The thickness of the metal is about 3 mm. So sawing shouldn’t be a problem for you.

This is a standard cutting technique for containers that have held combustible materials. Personally, several cylinders have already been cut by this method.

Having decided on the hard work of creating a headphone (hapi-drama, hank-drama, etc.) from a propane cylinder, you will certainly face certain difficulties.

Apart from the work of cutting the petals and subsequent processing, the most dangerous part of the job. drain off the remaining gas and cut off the valve. Generally speaking, it is not advisable to cut open a used gas cylinder under any circumstances. But if you nevertheless decide to do this operation, use the tips below.

What to look for?

There are a few things to keep in mind when cutting. The main ones are:

  • Cutting must be carried out with special protection applied.
  • Seam finishing is easier, but often the markings do not match. When cutting on a circular plane, you need to put a slight load on the angle grinder, since the small contact area leads to slipping of the nozzle.
  • Many problems arise with removing rust and paint.

In general, we can say that the cutting process does not create significant problems.

Examples of using cut gas cylinders

Parts of the balloon can be used for a wide variety of purposes. Examples include the following cases:

  • Furnace body.
  • Liquid storage tanks.
  • Mangala.
  • Smoking.

Gas cylinder oven

The scope is extensive, but it should be borne in mind that the metal is not characterized by high corrosion resistance. An exception can be called a propane gas cylinder, which is covered with paint using a special technology.

To carry out the work in question, a certain set of tools is required. Typically, cutting is done with an angle grinder. Other required tools are as follows:

  • Gas and open-end wrench for operating the valve. In order to remove all gas from the container, open the valve completely.
  • A hacksaw for metal is also used for cutting, for example, in the case of cutting a neck. It is worth paying attention to the correct choice of a suitable cutting blade, as too soft metal leads to rapid grinding of the teeth.
  • Water is used to clean the surface. It is usually poured into a container.

Be careful when working with an angle grinder, as the wheel comes into contact with a small area. In addition, protective goggles should be used at the time of cutting, as a large number of fragments and combustible abrasives are formed.

Gas Cylinder Cutting Angle Grinder

For an angle grinder, it is important to choose the most suitable wheel. This is because the inappropriate abrasive wheel can quickly grind off. Before each cutting, check the integrity of the nozzle, its secure attachment. Cutting without protective cover is not allowed.

How to cut a balloon safely

In the manufacture of a gas cylinder from propane or other gas, rather high quality metal is often used. That is why many are considering the possibility of cutting it to obtain blanks, which are later used to create various products. When considering how to cut a gas cylinder, it is recommended that you pay attention to the following points:

  • The body can be a good blank when making a stove, water tank or barbecue.
  • Before carrying out work directly, the oxygen gas cylinder should be emptied, since the gas at its high concentration is not only flammable, but also explosive. Therefore, check the filling level of the gas cylinder before cutting.
  • With oxygen and carbon dioxide gas cylinders, as a rule, there are no significant problems. This is due to the fact that ordinary iron is used in their manufacture.
  • With propane gas cylinders, quite serious problems can arise. This is due to the fact that it is quite difficult to empty them completely, this requires preliminary preparation.

Explosion of a gas cylinder

Before starting work, you also need to prepare the required set of tools. As a rule, it can be found in almost any garage and workshop.

How to proceed?

After everything you need has been purchased or found, you can proceed to the direct work. The sequence of actions is usually as follows:

  • The valve opens fully to completely release the gas. Do not forget that even a small amount of such a substance can lead to its fire or explosion. In addition, all clothing can be saturated with harmful odors. You can make sure that there is no more gas left in the container by covering the valve with a soapy composition. It is possible to drain the remaining gasoline only after completely unscrewing the valve and removing it, which is not recommended if there is pressure.
  • The next step is to unscrew the valve, after which the pins that fix the element are removed. Removing this locking mechanism is quite difficult in some cases, but if possible, a 6 mm diameter is formed. If the valve cannot be unscrewed, then you can cut it off using an ordinary hacksaw for metal. You can reduce the likelihood of fire by supplying water to the cutting area, for which it is enough to use a regular hose.
  • After that, the gas tank is filled with water. This is required in order to remove any residual gas that may remain in a half-closed container. The resulting gasoline solution can be safely discharged, since it is absolutely safe and cannot ignite.
  • It should be borne in mind that the resulting liquid has a persistent and rather pungent odor. That is why it is recommended to drain it away from the structure. To speed up the process, you can supply compressed air to the gas container.
  • After complete cleaning of the container, you can start cutting directly. For this, the surface is marked, for which you can use chalk. Many cut welds because they are less tough.
  • Before work, it should be borne in mind that in most cases, steel with a thickness of 3-4 mm is used in the manufacture of a gas cylinder. At the joints, this figure increases to 5-6 mm. Almost any angle grinder can handle this task.
  • To simplify your own task, you can prematurely pass the angle grinder using a disc with a thickness of 1.6 mm. By using a wider blade, it is possible to eliminate the possibility of jamming of the nozzle, which will be used for the final cut.
  • Some thicker elements can be cut and then cut with a chisel and hammer. Due to this, the cutting process is accelerated, but the quality of the resulting cut is significantly reduced.

The cutting methods discussed are used so that the gas cylinder can be reused in the manufacture of a wide variety of products. If after cutting it, a pungent smell remains, then the inner surface is burned with a blowtorch. After such processing, the case will be ready for further use.

How to cut a propane cylinder

After the old propane gas cylinder has become unusable, do not rush to throw it away. In some cases, it can be used to make various products with your own hands, for which it is often cut. A similar process is characterized by a fairly large number of features, which we will talk about in more detail below.

Rules to be followed during cutting

The rules for using the angle grinder in this case does not differ much from what is also when carrying out other work. The main ones are:

  • Work must be carried out in special clothing made of non-combustible material. Do not work with open areas of the skin, as if fragments get in, a burn may appear.
  • Before cutting, you should pay attention to the condition of the disc: the degree of wear, the presence or absence of defects, and much more.
  • Cutting must be carried out exclusively with protective goggles. Cutting creates a large number of debris that can get into the eyes and cause injury.
  • Only use an angle grinder with a protective cover.
  • When cutting metal, it is recommended to stand to the side of the cutting line.
  • In some cases, cutting is divided into several stages. When cutting for a long time, the bit used may cause it to heat up. Too high temperature leads to increased wear rate.

In addition, ”cutting should only be carried out when the gas container is completely emptied. This is due to the fact that even a small amount of gas can lead to detonation.

When cutting, a large number of fragments are formed, which immediately ignite the combustible mixture.

Hello my dear friends and distinguished guests!
Frankly, I have come across a couple of times questions about how you can cut this or that balloon. These are both oxygen and propane cylinders.
I have little experience in this weird business. I will share it with you, maybe it will come in handy for someone.

So. I cut propane cylinders, five of them. The first, like the subsequent ones, is confident and not afraid of anything. The point is probably that the smell of gas scares us.
But few people know that this is not entirely true, or rather not at all. The gas itself is practically odorless. But the “aroma” from it comes due to the fact that a certain ingredient is added to the gas (ethyl mercaptan is added to the gas for the smell),
so that a person smells the smell and realizes that there is a gas leak, there is a danger of fire or explosion!
Now that we have dealt with the smell, we begin the process of cutting the balloon.
For example, we will cut the Chinese. But at the slightest spark there will be an explosion! Residual gas will explode, even if the cylinder is empty.
What to do? How to get rid of gas residues? Wash? Steaming? Or else how?

I solved this problem in a very simple way. What do we have? GAS. We need to get rid of it, but what if we displace the gas? But with what? And the most common and safe solvent. WATER!
It will collect and absorb the rest of the gas, completely neutralizing it.
Once everything is thought out. we begin!
We take an old and preferably empty bottle. And AVITO doesn’t sell others! We take it out into an open field and turn off the valve.
It is advisable not to smoke at this moment, not to be near the fire or open fire, and not to stand in front of the gas outlet from the cylinder.
The first and second will lead you to a hospital bed, in the latter case, you will “smell” for at least a week.
Well, okay, we bleed off the remaining gas. Next, using pliers, very carefully pull out the pins that secure the valve, secured from complete eversion.
I bit off the flattened part of the pin, and pulled the pin itself out by the cap. Metal is soft and pliable.
Next, we unscrew the valve completely and discard it, we do not need it.

And what do we see? OH MOUNTAIN! The hole is only 6 mm! How to pour 50 liters of water there?

Again, natural resourcefulness and ingenuity prompted me the RIGHT DECISION!
I put the balloon near the neighbor’s car (this is very important! The neighbor himself ran away in horror.) I take a hose, insert a thinner hose into it, about 5 mm.
And by pouring, from one to another, I fill the bottle with water.

Dimensional Drawings

Although most cylinders have standard dimensions, the finished drawing will most likely have to be drawn up on your own. Indeed, in the process of drawing a sketch, you need to take into account all the points:

Step-by-step instructions for making a simple barbecue

Regardless of the brazier model, the initial volume and type of cylinder (from propane, freon, oxygen, etc.), many stages are the same.

B-B-Q

The simplest possible model. A part of the side wall is cut out. The hole is both a firebox and a hearth. The grill is placed directly on the walls. Classic barbecues are made without a lid.

The simplest model made from a large cylinder (50 l)

Brazier

The main difference between a classic barbecue and a barbecue is their shape. in the original the barbecue is round, and the barbecue is rectangular. So, by and large, all barbecue stoves made from gas cylinders are barbecues. After all, it doesn’t really matter what to place over the coals: a grate or a skewer.
