How to determine the manufacturing date of a Bosch battery

[E5] Production date Capacity code Ukrainian battery A-MEGA 7

The battery marking is placed on the upper part and duplicated on the front sticker. On Varta batteries intended for dealers and car manufacturers, the date of manufacture is printed on the minus terminal. The upper number indicates the week of manufacture (continuous numbering). The lower value corresponds to a decade of manufacture. For example, if the negative terminal has the numbers 20/15, it means the battery was released in week 20 (May) of 2015.

The product is marked with a code of 24 characters. Positions 4, 5, 6 give the date of manufacture. The fourth digit represents the year, the fifth and sixth digits represent the month of manufacture.

Consider the case where the following is engraved on the battery cover: F2C6180520992 546529 82E 07. Number 618 occupies positions 4 to 6. Using the table below we determine that the battery was produced in February 2016.

The letter in the first position indicates the factory that made the battery:

  • A. Vienna;
  • C. Česká Lípa (Czech Republic);
  • E or G. Guardamar Burgos (Spain);
  • F or R. Rouen;
  • H. Hanover;
  • S. Haltsfred (Sweden).

The second position in the code identifies the factory assembly line.

The third symbol indicates the recipient category for which the battery is manufactured:

  • V. retail, non-serviceable versions are supplied;
  • E is for an assembly line mower in a car factory;
  • C. for a partner (e.g., Varta makes a battery for Bosch).

The seventh digit tells you the shift number.

A battery is not meat or loaf, but also has its own shelf life, t.к. Inside this small but heavy box there are continuous chemical reactions and processes.

Therefore, when buying a starter battery (battery) you need to pay attention to the date of manufacture. An expired battery, as in the case of meat and loaf is a waste of money and time. A battery that is “lying” “not fresh” can “run out” at any minute. And, for lead-acid batteries made by conventional technology with the addition of antimony, the storage period should not exceed 6-10 months. If the battery has silver-alloyed plates it should be charged for 12-15 months. But in the case of calcium batteries, their self-discharge is minimized, but still within a year or two such batteries run down to almost zero. But it’s not necessary to take these storage times as a constant. In many respects, storage life (without periodic recharging) depends on the conditions in which the battery is stored.

In general. the consumer characteristics of the battery after 2-3 years of storage deteriorate so much that it is simply not recommended to buy a battery that has lain for this or a longer period of time. Of course, there are exceptions, for example, Bosch AGM batteries practically do not lose the charge even after 3 years.

In other words, it is not recommended to take “lying” goods, as well as, when buying a battery of any freshness period. before installing it on the car is recommended to charge!

All the necessary information can be found on the battery label. There are no uniform standards for marking batteries by date of manufacture, it is put differently on different batteries. Most manufacturers indicate the date of manufacture of the battery as a set of letters and numbers, and sometimes as a color marking.

The date of manufacture of the battery can be found on the front label, embossed on the cover, or placed on a separate label on the side wall. There are no standards here.

The most common ways to mark information:

The code consists of two groups of digits: the first group has four digits, the second group has six digits, for example: 1234 567890.Marking scheme:1. production line number2, 3, 4. individual lot code5. last digit of the year6. half-year7. sequential number of month in half-year:First half-year: 1st January, 2nd February, 3rd March, 4th April, 5th May, 6th June Second half-year: 1st July, 2nd August, 3rd September, 4th October, 5th November, 6th December8,9. day (number of month)0. crew number (2 digits are possible)

Any car is impossible to operate without a faultless battery that should provide fast engine starting at any temperature and safe operation of all electrical appliances on board.

When choosing a battery, it is important to pay attention not only to the brand, but also to the date of manufacture, because while it is on the shelves in the store it has already undergone chemical reactions as a result of which the service life will be reduced. In this article we will analyze how to decipher the marking of the battery Bosch and how to find out the date of manufacture.

Deciphering battery markings of popular battery brands by year of manufacture

Like any equipment, batteries are subject to obsolescence. With them, this process is expressed in the fact that over time, due to the rapid flow of chemical reactions inside, both the electrodes and the electrolytic fluid itself become unusable. Oxidation, corrosion, reduced ion density for exchange can all cause it to fail. Therefore, when buying, you should immediately pay attention to the date of manufacture of the battery Bosch or a model of any other company.

Battery obsolescence symptoms

Battery production has sufficient volume to saturate the market with products, but in order to do so, it is necessary to more than cover its needs. Therefore, some of the already manufactured units ready for shipment must spend a certain amount of time in the warehouse. There, they are stored until they are shipped to the store, but may remain in the warehouses of the retailer for a period of time. Any downtime negatively affects the life of the battery.There are several reasons for this:

  • Corrosion of internal components. Metal parts are subject to it, which, under the influence of the acids included in the electrolyte, are excessively oxidized.
  • Reduced density of the electrolytic fluid. can be a direct consequence of the fall of the charge level and the formation of sludge in the lower part of the body. As the first charge can eliminate these deficiencies only partially, you must be prepared for a rapid replacement of the working filler.
  • Self-discharge. one of the main woes of any battery. The state of deep discharge is considered the most harmful for modern power sources, because it can lead to a rapid loss of subsequently accumulated capacity.
  • Storage conditions. Not all storage facilities are equally good at protecting the battery from the negative effects of the environment. Increased atmospheric humidity and cold or heat are the primary enemies to the longevity of a lying power supply.

Any product that has been in storage for two or three years and has not been sold should be discarded, not sold. Characteristics during this period fall in comparison to the reference so much that it can not be used in cars or households. So you need to know how to determine the year of manufacture of the battery Bosch or other manufacturer.

Marking methods

First of all, we have to decide on the contact material, since it affects the maximum safe storage time. This is an important feature, which helps to avoid mistakes in interpreting the obtained results by date of production. It is equal for different types:

Naturally, much depends on the method of storage, so it is better to be reinsured and not to buy a module in which the above terms come to an end. There is a difference in the way different manufacturers mark their models. Some people stamp the numbers on the positive terminal. There are also those who apply them by laser directly on the housing. There is practically no use of stickers. with the advent of cheap counterfeiters, companies have to switch to more sophisticated methods.

Despite this, many domestic manufacturers are still not squeamish to grind out the old indicators and burn out the new ones on their own equipment. That is why you have to be careful and take into account even such details as the appearance of the housing, which can show the signs of time and surroundings.

Several options are used in the application:

  • The unique code is usually ten-digit, where certain digits indicate the month, year, quarter or half year in which the unit was manufactured.
  • Color circle. Used in older VARTA battery models produced from the beginning of 2011 to the end of 2013.

In order to determine the date unmistakably, you should use the specific manufacturer’s checklist. In the case of the more popular models, consider VATRA, Bosch and some others.

Known patterns

In the case of Bosch and VARTA, as of 2014, the new production date is stamped on the battery casings. Both are worth considering, since there are still older models on the market and in the used equipment sales segment.

To determine the date of manufacture of an old style Bosch battery, you need to find a special code of twenty-four characters on the top cover. The year in it will be marked with the fourth symbol in the combination, the next two. the month. For example, if there is 204 there, it corresponds to the fourth month, April, 2012. If 311. then the battery was manufactured in November 2013.

On these models, the date of manufacture is usually duplicated on the front label, leaving only the three 24 digits mentioned.

VARTA, on the other hand, marked the battery modules with color circles. They stood for the quarter during which the model was produced. The values looked like this:

  • First quarter. green.
  • The second one is red.
  • The third is pink.
  • The fourth one is white.
  • The first one in 2012 is gray.
  • Second. orange.
  • The third one is yellow.
  • Fourth is blue.

For 2013 quarters, the diagram was taken from 2011. It’s completely identical to it.

After the beginning of 2014, both companies adopted a new numbering. All months have received completely different two-digit numbers to which they correspond. For example, the months from February to April are numbers between 18 and 20. May through December. 53 to 60. Thus, 555 is the model produced in July 2015.

2020 will get the code 0. All those following it are numbers in order. The numbering that corresponds to the specific months will also be shifted. For the first four, it will lie between 37 and 40; for the last eight, it will lie between 73 and 80. So, the battery produced in December 2029 will be labeled 980.

The first letter is the coding of the geographic location of the factory where the module was produced. For example, G is Spanish Guardamar, F and R are French Rouen, and so on.

It is worth noting that, according to official data, to assess the potential performance of the Bosch battery, deciphering the time of manufacture makes no sense. The manufacturer itself has repeatedly stated that instead of paying attention to the date, it is better to just watch the open circuit voltage readings. If it falls below 12.5 volts, such a battery may be considered unsuitable and not exploited.

VARTA applies the same principles for determining readiness for use, but adds that their products can be stored for over a year before they are sold and start working, and all other indicators are true only for older models of hybrid and antimony batteries. The manufacturer claims that its tests ascertain an open-circuit voltage of more than 12.7 volts even on models that are six or nine months old. In addition, it is stated that there is no practice to buy only new, “out of stock” models all over the world.

Other manufacturers

Batteries from Mutlu, colloquially called “mutla” by motorists, are marked with a laser that peoriates the surface on the top cover. The code has six digits, to understand which will help a short memo, because their value is not similar to the marking of the battery Bosch.

determine, manufacturing, date, bosch

For example, 220524 is interpreted as follows:

  • 2 is the number of the production line on which the battery has been assembled and tested for suitability.
  • 2 is the year, in this case it is 2012.
  • 05 is the serial number of the month, May.
  • 24 is a number according to the calendar.

Thus, this module was produced on May 24, 2012.

Portuguese “tudors”. TUDOR. have a mixed, character-numbered serial number. The second position from V to Z denotes the interval between 2008 and 2012, from 2013 the alphabet begins with the letter A. The fifth letter stands for the month, here everything is in strict alphabetical order: A to L.

TITAN batteries from the Crimean Battery Factory have six digits in their serial number. The first two are the year, the next two are the month, for example, 04 is April. The latter represent the week of the year, not the number, so they are tied to the month.

Optima, a company from the USA, only puts the year and day on the side. For example, a four-digit combination of 2145 is the 145th day of 2012. The same is true for the A-Mega company, with one difference. between the day and the year a slash is put.

Other ways of marking from some companies:

determine, manufacturing, date, bosch
  • Sznajder. the code is on the edge of the upper cover. Only the last four digits are taken into account. The first to the third digit stands for the day and the last one for the year. Because of the nature of the marking, to know the year of manufacture, subtract one from the last digit.
  • Moll. four digits. The first two digits indicate the week and the last two digits indicate the year of manufacture. The minus terminal is stamped.
  • Exide Technologies. the concern includes many manufacturers from different countries, so you should pay attention to the presence of such a name under the name of the supplier company. The code only consists of two characters. The first digit is the year. Second, the letters of the English alphabet are the month, A through L inclusive.
  • Atlas. the code is on the lid, usually stamped just below the carrying handle. It consists of five characters, a space and a number that indicates the year of production. The first letter in the marking is the month, also in alphabetical order, but excluding the letter I. That is, September will be marked as J, and December as K. Bost models are marked in the same way.
  • Banner. only alphabetic notation. The four initial digits of the code engraved on the cover decode as follows: the first two letters stand for a week, the last two for a year. Only characters from A to K participate in the marking.
  • Panasonic. the symbols are painted on. The code consists of six digits and one letter. The date is formed on the principle of “date-month-year”, which makes it easier to decipher for the Russian user. For example, 220212 is February 22, 2012. The SuperNova models are marked on the same principle with one difference. they are not drawn, but stamped.

Many domestic battery companies adhere to the most understandable marking scheme. For the date of final manufacture, they take the day the electrolyte was refilled or the immediate time of completion of assembly. This makes it easier to set the date.

Checking the battery voltage

If in determining the date of manufacture deciphering batteries Bosch or any other manufacturer is not possible due to damage to the label or its erasure, you can use a multimeter. This device is able to accurately measure the voltage across the terminals to assess the degree of discharging of the electrolyte and make a decision to replace it.

You can carry out the readings as follows:

  • Completely disconnect the battery from the circuit. If you don’t want to remove it, you may simply disconnect the common ground.
  • If the cell has been charging for two hours before the procedure, allow it to drain the stored charge.
  • Connect the multimeter probes to the poles. It is not necessary to observe the polarity, because if it is reversed, the screen will simply show the result with a minus sign.

The results are interpreted according to the degree of deviation of the obtained indicators from the value of 12.5 volts. If they exceed this mark, the charge is one hundred percent. At approximately 12.4 volts, this means that the battery is two-thirds charged. Under 12.3. the device is unsuitable for further use and must be replaced.

In some cases, you can refill the electrolytic fluid and repeat the measurements. If the situation has not changed and the results are still below normal, the battery definitely needs to be replaced, as it will not produce sufficient voltage.

Where to look for the FD number?

FD number is indicated on the information sheet, which is glued to the back of the washing machine Bosch. Usually the sticker is located in the upper central part of the case, a little less often it is shifted to the right corner. Also the assembly date and the serial number of the model are duplicated on the sticker located on the inside of the machine door. It is important that both these pieces of information overlap completely.

To find the code, just look at any label and find the letters “FD. After that, find 4 more digits next to it, that will be the Factory Date.

The FD code should be distinguished from the model, product and serial numbers of the appliances. these are different combinations. The first begins with “E-Nr.This is the “Factory Date” and most often consists of several Latin letters and digits. It is usually required for device and maintenance information when contacting service stations. a six-digit sequence that is decoded as follows:

The Bosch washer serial number encrypts the factory and manufacturer’s code, year and month of manufacture, and the sequential number of the model on the mower assembly and checksum.

The serial number includes parts of the FD code and Z-Nr., and also tells the user the factory ID, the manufacturer and the checksum. Thus the combination controls the correctness of the specified information on the model, acting as additional protection against manufacturing errors and counterfeit. There are 18 digits in total and their deciphering is as follows:

  • The first two digits are the individual factory code (for example, the Bosch plant in Poland has a code of “41”, in the USA it is “85”, and in Russia it is “88”);
  • The next three. the year and month of manufacture;
  • The next 7 numbers are the internal manufacturer code;
  • then 5 digits. the number of the washing machine (which machine came off the assembly line);
  • the last digit is a check digit (with its help the whole serial number is checked).

The washer-dryer’s date of manufacture is read not only from the machine’s data sheet, but also from the FD-code on the rating labels. In addition, you can find out other information about the washing machine: from the country of assembly to the number of the assembly line.

Where are the markings on Bosch batteries

Quite often car enthusiasts have no idea where and how the marking of the battery Bosch. Most often it is located on the cover, but it is not easy to find, so if it is not a new battery only from the store you need:

  • Clean the top of the battery case from dirt.
  • Examine it carefully and try to find a not very clearly visible sequence of icons starting with a capital letter.
  • If it is followed by a number, and then another letter and a number again. this is the information presented in the form of a code, which encrypts the data about the date of manufacture of the battery.

Important! The inscription may appear in various places on the front surface of the housing or the labyrinth lid of the Bosch battery.

Therefore, it will be necessary to examine them carefully and determine or identify them from the above.

The code on the battery case of many manufacturers includes the batch number, country, factory and city of manufacture, conveyor number, date of manufacture from the day, month and year, etc. important information. It is applied primarily for internal use, so that you can easily distinguish the batch number and in case of a defect quickly remove it from the belt. The code is also important for the store personnel, especially when they receive a complaint and need to conduct an independent examination of the technical condition of the device. The marking can also be very helpful to the customer if they need to know the date of manufacture and how long the battery has been sitting idle in the warehouse. It happens that the conditions for storing the battery in the warehouse are extremely far from ideal, and the period from the date of manufacture is the last thing they pay attention to. Getting the battery to the store was not without adventure. In other words, before it is in its rightful place under the hood, a battery can go through a lot of troubles, so the less time has passed since the production date, the better for the condition of the battery.

Different batteries have their own periods of storage without use, but the downtime from manufacture for obsolete serviceable antimony and low-antimony batteries is only six months. advanced maintenance-free batteries with calcium added to the plates can be stored without recharging for a year. Calcium battery with silver doped plates can last 12-18 months from date of manufacture. But even during this time, many chemical processes will occur within the battery that will affect the condition and performance. This period is only recommended, and it would be better to get a newer device. Even the best AGM batteries do not retain their full performance for longer than two or three years, and they will be dead forever.

To find out the date of manufacture of the battery it is important to decipher the code of letters and numbers, which is drawn on the top section of the box with a laser, or can be specified on a label or a special sticker. Each manufacturer has its own principle of encrypting the number, there is simply no single way, because even within the same company the code can change.

Please note: if there is no manufacturing data on the battery at all or if it is difficult to read the date of manufacture, do not take the device. You are most likely facing a counterfeit, which will not last long.

How to know the manufacturing date of the car battery?

Each automobile battery manufacturer has a coding that encodes the date of manufacture, country of manufacture, lot number, and other data. As a rule, the code is stamped on the battery itself, but some manufacturers indicate this information in the warranty card. For your own convenience in determining the date of manufacture of the battery, here are some examples of decoding of the coding of some manufacturers of automobile batteries:

Bosch, Varta

Since 2014, battery manufacturers Bosch and Varta have used a new date-of-manufacture coding. In the long code stamped on the battery, the 1st digit indicates the manufacturer: A. Austria; C. Czech Republic; G. Spain; F. France; H. Germany. The 4th digit represents the year of manufacture, the 5th and 6th digits are the month code. Month codes on Bosch or Varta batteries: January. 17, February. 18, March. 19, April. 20, May. 53, June. 54, July. 55, August. 56, September. 57, October. 58, November. 59, December. 60.

Example: C7C7202312362. battery manufactured in April 2017 in the Czech Republic.

Mutlu

Turkish Mutlu batteries are marked with six digits on the top of the case. 1st digit represents production number, 2nd digit represents production year, 3rd and 4th digits represent month, 5th and 6th digits.

Tubor (Titan, Vaiper, Cobat, Bat)

Tubor trade house batteries are marked as follows: 1st position indicates the day of the week (1-7), 2nd and 3rd. week number (01-53), 4th position (Latin letter). year of manufacture, and the 5th digit is the shift number. Year of production is indicated in Latin letters: Z. 2014, P. 2015, A. 2016, S. 2017, T. 2018, X. 2019, L. 2020.

Example: 226S1. battery manufactured June 20, 2017 on the first shift.

Medalist, American, Delkor

To mark the date of manufacture of batteries from the South Korean company Delkor, a five-digit code is applied to the upper part of the case. The first position is used to encode the year of manufacture, the second the month (A. January, B. February, C. March, D. April, E. May, F. June, G. July, H. August, I. September, J. October, K. November, L. December).Example (for a Korean battery): 5AR18. battery manufactured in January 2015.

Manufacturers of Chinese analogues of Medalist batteries use the following markings: the 1st letter (A) denotes the month (January), the 2nd letter (G) denotes the year (the 7th letter in the Latin. 2017 г.), 0318-case type.

Example (on a Chinese battery): AG0318. battery manufactured in January 2017.

Tyumen Bear, Yamal (Tyumen Battery, Space, Arctic, Buran)

Tyumen battery manufacturers put the production date designations by laser peorization on the back of the case. The coding consists of six digits: the first two represent the month and the remaining four. year of production.

European batteries

On Varta and Bocsh batteries there is a big code with letters and numbers, where we are interested only in the 4th, 5th and 6th numbers. From 2014, the first three digits indicate the production specifics (conveyor belt number, plant name) and the date is encoded in the next three digits. The date is deciphered by the special table:

For example, the Bocsh battery is stamped C2C857282, C2C. features of production, 857. look at the date in the table. It turns out that the battery was manufactured in September 2018.

Why you need to know the Bosch battery marking

The characteristics of any battery deteriorate during long-term storage, it does not matter whether it is used or lying on the shelf in the store. An exception to this rule could be dry-charge, GEL, EFB or AGM batteries.

In other cases batteries have an “aging” effect. Manufacturers do not write the date of manufacture in a human-readable format, they encode it in a special code. There may also be a coding:

  • Information about the plant;
  • What country is manufactured in;
  • Number of the series;
  • Which conveyor belt;
  • Shift number and other service information.

This is so that in the event of a defect it is easy to trace the lot.

For the end-user the most important thing is the date of manufacture, because knowing that the approximate lifetime of the battery is 5-7 years, you can find out how long it has been produced and when it may be out of order.

How to determine the year of manufacture of Bosch batteries

Labels are different for batteries manufactured before and after 2014.

In order to find out the date of issue of the battery “Bosch”, produced before that date, you should analyze the 13-character code. The first letter here encodes the plant where the battery is made (the company has 7 of them, all in Europe), the second number is the assembly line number. Next is a symbol for the type of shipment (wholesale, small wholesale, retail). The fourth digit is the year of manufacture (1. 2011, 2. 2012, etc.). д.), ordinal numbers 5-6 stand for the month of manufacture, and 7-8 for the number of.

Thus, the marking C8C9091510474 means that the battery was made in 2009 on September 15.

Since 2014 the marking has changed, and it became even more difficult to decipher the date of manufacture of the Bosh battery. Here, three digits in a row are responsible for the date, from 4 to 6. However, to decipher this three-digit code, you will need to refer to the table below. It is not possible to memorize it, because it uses a rather complicated coding by year and month.
