How To Dilute The Mixture For The Trimmer

Friends, here’s the summer on the doorstep, that is, the season begins, and it’s always some kind of work on your site at the cottage or in the country using garden and other motorized equipment and therefore I am often asked how to prepare a mixture for two-stroke engines and which one to choose gasoline and oil.

Most garden motor equipment such as trimmers, chainsaws, brush cutters, some lawn mowers and motor cultivators (among them there are models with a 4-stroke engine) are equipped with two-stroke internal combustion engines, that is, as the name implies, the work process in them takes place in two cycles, and not in 4 as, for example, in most gasoline automobile engines. For us, it’s important now that two-stroke engines usually have a single lubrication and power system, that is, a gasoline-oil mixture is poured into the fuel tank. Therefore, let’s examine the question of how to prepare a fuel mixture for two-stroke engines, which oil and gasoline to choose.

That’s how the two-stroke engine works

How to prepare a mixture for two-stroke engines of various motorized vehicles

Here, in any case, you should read the instruction manual for your device, be it a chainsaw trimmer and something else. The fact is that different manufacturers give different recommendations on the oil-gasoline ratio. It can be 1:40 and 1:50 and 1:80. It also happens that the recommended ratio is indicated on the oil can itself. In the general case, I personally use a ratio of 1:50. In general, do not really worry if the manufacturer recommends using a ratio of 1:50, and you have prepared a mixture of 1:40 or 1:60. Nothing will happen once, even if you develop a whole tank. Just in the first case, the smokiness of the exhaust may increase. I happened to see people who prepared a mixture by eye and, in the absence of special oil, used ordinary olive! And nothing bad happened. Personally, for all my devices with a two-stroke engine, I prepare the mixture as follows: I take a 2 liter Pepsi bottle, for example, and for measuring the oil I use a regular 40 gram vodka glass. Thus, the ratio is 1:50. The cooking technology itself is as follows. Pour oil into a bottle through a funnel and then fill the bottle with gasoline halfway. Half to make it easier to mix. After this, shaking and rotating the bottle, mix its contents until a uniform color, depending on the oil, it can be reddish and yellowish, or even bluish. After mixing, pour the remaining half of the gasoline and shake it again. Everything. The mixture is ready to use.

Gas for two stroke engines

Everything is simple here. Ordinary gasoline is used. For the octane number, in general, you should be guided by the instructions of the operating manual. If this moment is not specifically registered there or a choice is made on the octane number, usually between 92 and 95 gasoline, then I recommend using only 95 gasoline! Many still believe that any gasoline is obtained from 80 by adding additives and, accordingly, 95 is therefore worse, because of it there are more of them in the octane number. Friends, this is not so for a long time! Naturally, additives have always been used and will always be used. But be aware that almost no major refineries already produce 80 gasoline, and the difference between the cost of 92 and 95 gasolines for plants is almost the same, so no one now receives 95 out of 92 gasolines, these are all old stories.

Do not hesitate and feel free to buy 95 gasoline instead of 92

But if you refuel your motorized equipment with 95 gasoline (unless the instructions clearly indicate otherwise), then you will almost certainly avoid detonation when the motor is running and, accordingly, extend its life. Naturally, we do not forget that you should buy gasoline only at large gas stations, where you will almost completely buy high-quality gasoline.

Two-stroke engine oil

Well, talking about oil for two-stroke engines, I also want to note that there is no point in using the original branded oil, which the manufacturer of your chainsaw or trimmer insists on using. This is all marketing and often branded oil is just some ordinary oil from one of the many manufacturers who have an agreement with the brand of your motorcycle equipment and, accordingly, their label is a big name and the price is three times more expensive.

Well, in conclusion, it is worth noting that you should not store the prepared fuel mixture for a long time, the fact is that oil dissolved in gasoline does not retain its properties for very long. Additives, etc. May be destroyed. Therefore, the optimal storage of the prepared mixture is not more than a month, and a maximum of no more than three. As an indirect reference point of suitability, we can consider the absence of sediment and delamination of the mixture.

Specifications for the trimmer contain links to recommended fuel and lubricants. At the same time, the octane number of the brand of gasoline is indicated specific, but in the part of oils there is a lengthy explanation about the need to use a product of a particular manufacturer. For convincing reasons, it is indicated that only when these recommendations are followed, the company extends the warranty. What is it: a marketing move or oils from other manufacturers do not meet the requirements? The answer is in this article.

Why mix trimmer oil with gasoline

The two-stroke engine has a simple and, at the same time, extremely efficient design:

  • The piston makes a working stroke every second stroke;
  • Cylinder lubrication is made with oil dissolved in gasoline;
  • The removal of combustion products occurs due to compression, without a special mechanism.

All this led to the creation of a family of small engines that have successfully adapted to domestic and professional equipment:

  • Trimmers;
  • Chainsaws;
  • Motorcycles;
  • Various tilleries.

Due to the design features, it was possible to achieve the desired fuel consumption only on small engines with power in the range of 15. 20 hp. This indicator looks especially good in the range of 1. 5 hp. Here, the fully low weight and dimensions of the engine correspond to gas mileage.

With increasing size, the area of the inlet and outlet channels increases. The process of gas removal and fuel supply is deteriorating sharply. In this regard, the transition to a more efficient combustion system of the gasoline mixture, which would require the presence of forced engine maintenance systems, was required. Four-stroke models thereby seized the palm among the power units of high power. Their combination into multi-cylinder structures allowed the creation of special systems related to the formation of the composition of the fuel mixture, lubrication and other things, which favorably affected the consumption of gasoline.

The lubrication of the rubbing elements of the piston and cylinder of a two-stroke engine occurs with oil, which is in a certain proportion in the composition of the fuel. Gasoline burns, and oil settles on the surface of the cylinder, reducing the friction of the rubbing parts. Lack of lubrication leads to damage to the cylinder, up to jamming. In the case of an excess, under the influence of high temperatures, a thermally modified product is deposited in the annular grooves. Compression drops, and with it the power.

How to mix oil with gasoline

Engine oil is used to supplement trimmer gasoline. Mixing is carried out in a certain proportion. Manufacturers have a different volume ratio: from 1 to 50 to 1 to 20. In the technical specifications there is a link to this. Care should be taken with a small proportion of the oils. A small inaccuracy leads to oil starvation of the engine, reduces its resource.

There are products in which a proportion of 1 to 20-40 is indicated. It is better to refuse the use of such a lubricant. A wide range of mixtures indicates low product qualities. The occurrence of piston rings, with the constant use of such grades, is almost guaranteed.

Motor oils, type M-8, are added in a proportion of 1-20. In high-speed engines, their use is undesirable. The cycle between the supply of the mixture is so small that it will cause an excess of lubricant in the cylinder. Trimmers have low revolutions, therefore they allow the use of low-grade grease. Due to the initially low resource, you can not worry about the coking rings. First, there will be a complete wear of the equipment.

The principle is not the use of recommended oil or from other manufacturers. The main thing is to dilute gasoline with trimmer oil in accordance with the proportions in accordance with the characteristics of the product. The refusal of service workshops to guarantee only on the basis of using a different brand of grease, but with acceptable parameters, is illegal.

The chainsaw engine is the “heart” of the tool, so it is very important to use a properly prepared fuel mixture.

Fuel mixture for a chainsaw It is prepared from two components. Oil and gasoline. Chainsaws are equipped with two-stroke engines, so the oil is not added to the lubrication system (like a four-stroke engine), but directly to gasoline. At the same time, it is very important to observe the correct proportions of the ingredients, of course, in no case try to work on pure gasoline, because in this way you will very quickly “kill” the chainsaw.

If we talk about which gasoline to pour into a chainsaw, it will optimally use fuel with an octane rating A-95, in this case, fuel economy can turn out disastrously. Often, European manufacturers indicate that A-90 or A-92 gasoline can be used, but in post-Soviet countries the quality of gasoline is inferior to European, so in our realities it is better to use better gasoline.

As for the most proportions of a benzo-oiled mixture, then everything is simple: you must follow the instructions for the tool. All manufacturers of chainsaws indicate the necessary ratio in the instruction manual or in the instrument passport, in addition, the proportions for refueling the chainsaw may differ depending on the model of the chainsaw. As a rule, the proportion of oil and gasoline to a chainsaw of famous manufacturers is a ratio of 1:40 or 1:50, which means 1 part of oil for, for example, 40 parts of gasoline. Now arithmetic 1 liter of gasoline = 1000 ml of gasoline, divide by 40 and get 25 ml of oil. If you perform the same steps to the ratio 1:50, then we get 20 ml of oil per 1 liter of gasoline. As for budget-made Chinese chainsaws, the situation is slightly different. The ratio of gasoline and oil for chainsaw made in China 1:25, that is, 1000 ml of gasoline is divided by 25, we get 40 ml of oil. The thing is that in branded chainsaws a good assembly and the distance between the pistons and cylinders in the engine is much smaller than that of Chinese chainsaws, therefore the required amount of oil differs almost twice.

In order to measure the correct portion of oil, use a regular medical syringe of sufficient volume.

Another subtlety. In a dry canister for gasoline, first fill in gasoline, and then oil. On the contrary, the procedure is fraught with a poor quality fuel mixture, because the oil is more dense, sticks to the bottom of the canister. What a good mix.

Be sure to prepare the fuel mixture in a can and pour ready-made special fuel into the gas tank! Never cook or mix directly in the fuel tank of a chainsaw!

If the question of how to breed gasoline for a chainsaw figured out, then on storage conditions and shelf life of the fuel mixture It is worth saying a few words. It’s best and easier to prepare a 1-liter gasoline-oil mixture, it is recommended to do this immediately before working with the tool. The fuel tanks of chainsaws have a volume of 0.3 to 1 liter. In domestic use, in one session, the entire volume of the prepared combustible mixture is rarely used, so the remainder can be saved until the next session. It is necessary to store the fuel mixture in a special canister for gasoline, in a dry, dark place. It is optimal to calculate that shelf life of the finished mixture will be 7-10 days. The fact is that the oil currently on the market is not synthetic, but organic, that is, natural. After 10 days, all lubricating properties are lost, gasoline simply “eats” the oil. Naturally, it is no longer possible to use such fuel, this can cause breakdown and failure of the chainsaw.

At the end of the work, it is necessary to drain the fuel mixture, start the chainsaw, the tool stalls (so that the saw has a dry carburetor) and now you can leave it until the next operation session.

Unsuitable fuel mixture must be disposed of.
