How to drill concrete with a hammer drill. Preparations

How to combine a regular drill with a rotary hammer

Concrete walls and slabs can be drilled with three types of tools:

The first two tools can often be made in the same body. This is a more economical option, but requires attention in the selection of drills. for each mode (drilling, impact) need their own devices.

A peorator is not only capable of drilling, but also of forming powerful, high-frequency strokes. This allows it partly replace a jackhammer and make special chisels and large notches in the concrete. It is convenient for crushing masonry and removing of old ceramic tiles.

Drilling with the peorator

It is necessary to follow the safety rules and chose drill bits and drills according to the type of the clip on it. It can be of several types:

  • SDS. has two grooves and shank diameter of 1 cm, working part from 0.5 cm
  • SDS plus. has four slots and a shank diameter of 1 cm, the working part from 0.5 cm in diameter
  • SDS top. has 4 slots and shank diameter of 1.4 cm, working part from 1.5 cm
  • SDS quick. has 4 slots and a shank diameter of 1 cm, the working part from 0.5 cm
  • SDS max. has 5 slots and a shank diameter of 1.5 cm, working part from 2 cm

Diamond drills cannot be used with the impactor in percussion mode. Their destruction is inevitable because of their high fragility. The angle grinder is ideal for extensive work and for drilling through thick load-bearing walls and foundations.

Drilling with a drill

Drill bits with pobedite workpiece can be used as well as drill bits with diamond coating. Ceramic tiles or stone coatings can be drilled through with the latter at medium speeds without splitting them open. The drill is suitable for a variety of noncore work in home or apartment renovation. Only small and medium-sized walls can be drilled.

  • Wearing protective goggles and a respiratory filter mask are mandatory when working with the rotary table as well as with the drill. Otherwise eye injuries and inhalation of finely dispersed stone dust are inevitable.

What is a drill, how it works and what it is used for

Peorator is a tool that is designed to affect building structures, fragments of foundations, drilling various holes in walls. Today there are quite a few tools, which differ in design features.

Many people wonder what exactly can be done with a torch. The main purpose of the tool is considered impact work in solid structures, which include metal, stone and concrete. The device not only allows you to drill new holes, but also to chip away at tiles, break through walls or floors.

The drilling device has different operating modes. This makes it an almost universal tool. The main modes of operation include:

  • A blow without spinning;
  • Rotation with impact;
  • Rotating without impact;
  • drilling hard structures. metal, wood, stone, concrete structures.

A quality rotary hammer can be a substitute for a jackhammer. There is a percussion mechanism on the inside of the device. It can be electromechanical or electropneumatic.

Note! To actuate the appliance, just press a button. The device will make the impact itself with no effort on the part of the person.

Today many brands make quality drill bits. The main manufacturers of devices include Bosch (Bosch), Interskol, Makita. This allows you to choose the best option in terms of quality and price.

Stages of drilling in concrete

Before you begin, be sure to think about whether there are any communications, cables, etc., in this place., To avoid damaging anything.

Next, check that in the place of drilling was not old stains and dirt, otherwise clean the surface well.

The outer part of the concrete is usually more loose than the inner layers. Therefore, before you start drilling in concrete, make sure to mark and expand the point of the future hole, i.e. deepen (nail) the base of the entrance of the drill bit in this place. This is to ensure that the drill does not slip and move sideways. You can use a hammer and a large sharp nail, a self-drilling screw or a special dowel for the core.

During the work keep the working tool perpendicular to the concrete base, otherwise there is an increased risk that the drill bit will break.

If you are drilling a hole with an impact drill, switch modes from time to time. to “hit” the surface, switch on the option “impact” in the drill.

As a drill, as well as a drill bit (peorator) should be given a “rest” from time to time. about once every 10 to 15 minutes. stop work.

One more thing. these same pobedite drills do not like overheat, so if they are used heavily, their tips should be periodically cooled with water.

For working on concrete, you will also need a triangular hard steel punch and an ordinary hammer. in case there are gravel in the concrete. By the way, as a puncher will do and old pobedite drill bit. If reinforcement or stones (rubble) are encountered during drilling, they must be removed separately. Reinforcing bars can be worked with conventional tools (with a hole punch and a conventional metal drill), but the stones lend themselves well only to the hole punch.

drill, concrete, hammer

What if you need to urgently make a couple of holes for a shelf, and you have at hand only a regular drill (without the impact mode), then during the drilling process, if necessary, you can periodically insert the drill bit into the hole and make a few hammer blows on it, and then rotate it into the hole, then. again drill with the drill, etc.ะด. Do not forget that the drill itself must be hard-alloy.

DON’T DRILL CONCRETE Until You Watch THIS VIDEO!

Periodically remove cement chips and dust from the working hole. they interfere with drilling. They can be removed with a vacuum cleaner or a natural brush.

If the drill bit gets stuck, do not loosen it, but gently loosen the tool, then put on a drill bit of a larger diameter and free the stuck tip, taking care not to touch it.

Drill a hole in the concrete should be 1 cm longer than the length of the dowel, so that the latter will easily enter into the wall.

The article was prepared by ASK Aegis. The company performs construction of houses from logs and provides a wide range of services in the market of country building.

Surface preparation

Before using the device, you need to check whether there are any communications on the section of the selected surface. If you neglect this rule, you can damage electrical wiring or the place where the pipe passes. A metal detector can help the worker cope with this task, because when non-ferrous metals, iron or steel are detected, it gives a specific signal.

If the selected section of the concrete wall meets all the requirements, then you need to set the point, and then proceed to operate the device.

Important! The surface of the wall is more loose than the subsequent layers.

Choosing the tool

So, the first question that the home master should ask himself is not how to drill a concrete wall with rebar, but with what. The main assistant in this case will be a peorator, because it is designed for stone and concrete. At the same time, even a powerful drill can not cope with a wall width of more than 12 cm. Although if we are talking about foam concrete, the drill is preferable, as the peorator will simply break it.

The quality of the drill bit also determines whether you can drill a hole in a concrete wall.

One of the best options is to use drill bits designed specifically for an impact drill. Their working part is a plate made of strong metal. With these drills, the question of how to drill a thin concrete wall can be considered solved.

There are also ring drills that have a diamond coating. They are very strong, they are used in special drilling machines, so they cost quite a lot. So they solve the problem, how to drill a hole in a concrete wall at home, is impractical as a minimum.

Using crowns

Often you need to get a large-diameter hole in the wall for a socket. How to drill a load-bearing wall in this case? Then use crowns, which have metal tips on the circumference. Crowns can be found in a variety of sizes, but the most popular are 68-centimeter, which are designed just for sockets. Working with these parts, the percussion mode must be switched off.

There are such drill bits for drills as well. But they have a sputtering of a different nature. of a cadride-tungsten alloy. It is convenient to use them, because to drill a hole in the wall of concrete with a drill and simultaneously make a hole in the tile it is quite possible. Such drill bits are used only with powerful drills.

Drills. another device than to drill a concrete wall. They are available in many different diameters. Experienced craftsmen advise to make a selection, based on the diameter of dowels.

Drilling through concrete with a peorator

So, how to drill a hole in a concrete slab with a peorator? The procedure is not complicated:

  • the drill is switched to percussion mode, and then the drilling begins; the tool must be held strictly at right angles;
  • after some time the drill bit is wet with water, this will help to avoid overheating;
  • after drilling a reinforced concrete wall is successful, the drill, without turning off the machine itself, must be removed;
  • To clean the obtained hole from dust, the drill bit is inserted several times.

It is not possible to drill through the wall? The drill hits something hard? Then you have to try to make the hole somewhere else.

Get along with the drill

How to drill into a concrete wall without a torch? The question of using an ordinary drill when working with concrete remains unsolved. So whether you can drill a hole in a concrete wall, everyone decides for himself. The tool can break, after all. Yes, and the procedure will take longer.

To drill a hole in the concrete with a drill, you can use a special tool. the punch. The operation is simple: put the sharp end to the place where the hole will be located, hit it several times with a hammer, and then you can start drilling.

It’s important not to overheat the tool.

As soon as the drill comes across an insurmountable obstacle, you need to activate the drill again, until the desired goal is reached. Here’s how to properly drill a concrete wall with a drill. Although it takes more time and effort, in the absence of a gator, it can also be used.

How to drill in concrete, with a drill or with a peorator?

Everybody is familiar with the working principle of the torch. The carbide tip rubs against the blind wall of the hole, removing the next crumbled layer of concrete with each revolution. The technology is fail-safe, but slow.

Besides, it causes parasitic heating that speeds up wear and tear. The drill is assisted by the peorator mechanism. The rotations are accompanied by percussive motions and the concrete is not only scraped off, but also chipped from the bottom of the hole. The speed of passage increases significantly.

There is another side to the coin. When using a peorator in percussion mode, it is impossible to get a straight and neat hole. In most cases, it is not necessary. But if it is not possible to hide the hole in a decorative way, it is better to use a diamond drill bit.

This method is especially relevant when processing low-density concrete. The drill pushes out large chunks, breaking up the solidity of the material. At the same time, the rotating drill bit without vibration gently cuts through the hole with even walls.

It is good, if there is a choice of tools. And if you have a simple drill? It is not possible to drill a large number of large holes. But a hole for a painting on the wall, you can do. You need a drill bit with a pobedite tip and a punch (flat borer).

Make a pass with the drill bit until it begins to rotate at nothing. Then a drill bit is inserted into the hole, several sharp blows with a hammer are made, and chips appear at the bottom of the hole. The drill is used to go some distance around the broken surface, and the cycle is repeated.

As a result, you get a more or less decent dowel hole with little effort (but a lot of time).

An overview of the tools

No tool is bad or good for drilling holes in concrete. The question is which one is best suited for your tasks. You can, of course, buy an expensive industrial drill to drill once through a wall where a simple drill would do it, and after that it will lie idle. But if the amount of work is large, the difference will be noticeable, and saving in this case is more expensive. Then it is better to save time and effort, and still buy a peorator, and not bother with a drill (which is better).

Hand drill

Household electric drill is the most budget-friendly option, indispensable in the household. It is good in that it is suitable for work on wood, metal, plastic. Such drills are more compact due to the fact that they do not have a bulky impact mechanism, they are lighter and easier to manage. Holes are therefore more accurate.

But, as for bricks and concrete, to “take” some strong walls in older homes with such a tool is not always possible. The drill is well suited for working with cellular concrete.

When working with concrete with a hammerless drill is necessary:

  • Use a hammer drill bit.
  • If you hit a rock, do not continue drilling under any circumstances, but break it up with the drill bit.
  • If you hit a rebar, you must replace the drill bit with one suitable for metal work and drill through the bar before continuing. (It is actually undesirable in bearing structures. after all, you don’t just put reinforcement into concrete.)

Drill without impact mechanism can drill a hole in the concrete up to a depth of 100 mm and a diameter of 80 mm.

Impact drill and impact wrench

Some drills have an impact mode. It not only has a drill bit that rotates, but it also makes a forward and backward motion. that is, it works both as a drill and as a puncher. That’s why different stones in the walls are not an obstacle for it. You can use it to punch holes for cables in unreinforced concrete, socket outlets. In short, an impact drill at home can serve as a substitute for a peorator, while costing much less.

Its other advantage over the impact drill is its versatility. You can drill anything with this drill, including wood and plastic. Compared to a hand drill, though, it’s a little heavy for point maneuvers.

But still keep in mind that the impact drill is not designed to drill through walls all the time. Its main function is drilling, and 80% of the time it is best used for that. Otherwise the impact function can be out of order altogether.

Once you’ve drilled 3 or 4 holes, let the drill rest and cool down. Then it will serve you well for years to come.

Impact drill can make holes to a depth of 5 times greater (500 mm). And they can be 5 to 120 mm in diameter.

Both types of drills create a lot of dust at work. A core drill is also very noisy.

What is the difference between an impact drill and a rotary drill?? Its mechanism has a completely different principle of operation. pneumatic. This allows you to make stronger impacts while reducing vibration. That’s why the drill can withstand much higher workloads.

The depth of the holes in this case varies from 150-1340 mm, and the diameter is 4-90 mm. It all depends on the removable working element. the auger. But it is not enough just to buy the biggest drill. the power of the peorator may not be enough to work with it, and the motor will simply burn out. And the higher the power of the tool, the higher the price. How to choose.

For drilling slabs of concrete, the normal power is considered. 600 watts, and the optimal number of revolutions per minute. 2500.

Wide through-holes and blind holes for sockets are made with drill bits. special nozzles for drills and rotary drills with a cutting edge. They are also made of sintered carbide.

drill, concrete, hammer
  • quickly deteriorate when colliding with rebar in reinforced concrete;
  • on through holes form chips on the back side;
  • Cannot drill deep at once. you need to chisel out a concrete cylinder and drill again, plunging the tool into the hole; extensions are often required.

So if you need to drill a lot, resort to drilling concrete with diamond drill bits.

Reinforced concrete with a diamond core drill bit

Even reinforced concrete can be penetrated with diamond drilling. Expensive professional equipment with a very powerful motor is used for this. This technology makes it possible to drill holes of any size, more than one meter deep. It can be used for drilling apertures, shafts for pipes and vents. With a diamond drill bit the walls and edges of the hole are smooth, and a special water system cools the drill bit and removes dust. Surprisingly, there’s not much noise from this machine, either.

A conventional drill can cause the surface to crack, but not here. Therefore, if you use a water collection ring and a vacuum cleaner, you can drill right through the decorative finish. the machine is secured to the stud so that the hole can be drilled at just the right spot and at just the right angle.

Aside from the price, the disadvantages include large dimensions. This is not a drill that you can easily throw in the trunk. So even if you need to drill a hole at home with a diamond drill bit, it makes sense to hire out or rent the equipment.

And it’s worth knowing what kinds of chucks there are. This is important because when working with concrete, especially in professional peorators, it is necessary that the drill (drill bit) is fastened securely and does not rotate even under the most intense loads. There are the following types:

  • Cam. in it the drill bit is fixed with a special key. Although the tooling is not easy to change, this old method is considered the most reliable. On professional equipment, they mostly use it.
  • Quick-clamping. in which the drill is fastened without a wrench. Such chucks can be: single-nose and double-nose. Double-bowl drill bits have two rotating rings, one to clamp the drill bit, the other to loosen. It turns out that you have to hold the sleeve with one hand and screw in the other sleeve with the other. The same ring does both in the single-cut chuck. It turns out that the single-slotted is more convenient, because the drill can be changed with one hand. But there is a disadvantage. the drill bit is not fixed as securely.
  • Collet SDS chuck. to change the tooling, you only need to turn the chuck. This is how the system is called in German: “insert-turn-fix”: The drill bit shank is inserted into the chuck, turned and fixed with locking balls.

Drilling tool

It is possible to properly drill a concrete wall:

The need for drilling

The need to work on a concrete surface arises:

  • the need to attach furniture (kitchen cabinets) to the wall:
  • Hanging a mirror, paintings, art installation;
  • installation of floor plinths;
  • Fastening of metal or wooden laths for plasterboard cladding, plywood;
  • Socket installation and other work.

Impact drill

Impact drill is a modification of regular drill, which works only in drill mode. Reciprocating motion function is added, creating a hammering effect. The drill bit transmits torque and simultaneously displacement along the axis with high frequency and low amplitude.

The cutting edge in contact with the concrete causes the formation of micro cracks. The latter are enlarged by the rotary motion of the drill. The monolith is disintegrated, concrete chips (dust) are produced. the hole-making process takes place.

Peorator

Represents a manual percussion machine for making holes, grooves, notches. The main difference from the principle of the drill, the tool does not drill, but drills (chisels, punches) a cavity in a solid material. In other words, the process resembles the surface treatment with a mechanical chisel.

Peorator is a highly specialized tool designed to perform operations specifically on hard and durable building materials on the base:

Compared to a drill, has more power, power capacity. Allows to create deep (up to one meter) holes. Diameter is up to 30~50 cm.

A kind of electric tool

Concrete holes can be drilled with a cordless screwdriver. Power should be at least 750Vt, the power supply voltage of 14~18V. Professional series have drill with impact function. But, because of the limited battery capacity, the amount of work performed is significantly less than with an impact drill or peorator.

Special drill bit for drilling in reinforced concrete

If you have to drill a reinforced concrete structure, then it is recommended to buy a special drill for reinforced concrete, which was developed by the German company Bosch. It is called the ProDiager, and it can drill into concrete with rebar inside.

The advantages of using such an attachment include:

  • Ability to drill holes up to 20 mm in diameter
  • Resistant to work with up to 1,000 holes
  • No need to purchase additional rebar drill bits

Reinforced concrete drills are equipped with a ULTIMAX monoblock head made of tungsten carbide material. With such a design it is not only possible to drill through reinforced concrete, but also to do so at high speed. The Concrete Bits deal effectively with rebar, stone, granite and other high-strength materials.

Reinforced concrete bits have a special SDS-plus shank design, which makes them suitable for use with conventional torches. Bosch has also developed a special drill bit for rebar, which is used in torches. These drills are available with diameters from 16 to 32 mm, and the depth of the resulting holes ranges from 120 to 300 mm. The disadvantage of such nozzles is that they cost quite a lot, so for getting one hole it is not the best option.

To summarize, we must say that to drill the encountered reinforcement in concrete. it is not a simple matter, but quite realistic. To do this, first make sure that deformation of the rebar will not cause damage to the concrete base. Try to move away from the armature, thereby obtaining a crooked hole in which you can install a dowel, and screw the screw. If you want to make a straight hole, but metal is in the way, then you should drill it with special drills. These drills are dozens of times more efficient than conventional metal bits, but should only be used in hammerless drilling mode.
