How To Fill The Trimmer
How to thread the line into the trimmer spool and which one is best for this?
Very often, those people who personally own dachas and vegetable gardens are faced with the need to care for the lawn on the site. In such cases, you simply cannot do without the usual manual braid or trimmer. The first is slowly fading into the background, and the number of people who use it is getting smaller and smaller. The trimmer works automatically and does not require a lot of effort. over, you don’t need a special skill to use it.
How the trimmer works?
The principle of operation of such a device is that the grass is mowed by a special fishing line installed on a fast-rotating head. The number of revolutions per minute can reach 8000. In a short time, the line becomes unusable, more precisely, it is erased. Then summer residents have a question: “How to fill the line into the trimmer coil”?
Types of trimmer lines
First of all, in order not to resort to frequent replacements, it is better to use a denser line. The number of its types and manufacturing firms is simply amazing. The main parameter of the trimmer line is its diameter. It varies from 1.6 to 3.2 mm. The most common type is 2mm line. However, its selection must be made depending on the type of trimmer you have.
There are several options for the section of the line. So, it can be round, square, in the form of a star with sharp edges. The last option is the most effective. However, it should be used only on powerful braids and at the same time you need to know how to thread the line into the trimmer spool. Therefore, we can conclude that the more powerful your lawn mower, the thicker the line should be.
A process such as winding a fishing line on a trimmer is not difficult, but it has its own characteristics. First, you need to choose the right fishing line, the diameter of which is prescribed in the device’s passport.
First, unscrew the spool cap. Be careful as the thread can be left or right. The left-hand thread is necessary so that the head of the scythe does not unwind during operation.
Threading the line into the trimmer
Before threading the line into the trimmer spool, measure 5 m from the skein (this is the average amount of line installed on trimmers). Then fold it in half to find the middle. The resulting center must be inserted into a special slot located on the spool. After that, wind the line in the direction of the arrow on the head.
From the above, it follows that the process of replacing the fishing line itself is not difficult. Having carried out such a manipulation as winding a fishing line on a trimmer reel several times, you will bring this process to automaticity. The only thing is that you need to constantly monitor the condition of the fishing line in order to avoid breaking it at the time of work on the site, when a spare coil may not be at hand.
Now you know how to thread the line into the trimmer spool, and you can do it yourself without much effort.!
Types of trimmer line
As a rule, line separation is based on different sample diameters, which can vary from 1.2 to 4 mm. The most commonly used material is a material with a thickness of 2 mm, but in no case should we forget that the choice should depend primarily on the trimmer model.
There is one main rule here: the more power the apparatus has, the thicker the line should be.
This element can also differ in the type of its section. So, it can be round (suitable for cutting plain grass) or square (for mowing soft green cover), sharp edges (tall grass), or be equipped with notches ideal for thin grass in diameter.
Do not forget that with the help of a fishing line it is allowed to mow only grass, and for other, coarser vegetation, it is imperative to use knives.
Next, you should take a closer look at the process of how to insert the line into the trimmer correctly. Indeed, it is with this procedure that many consumers often have difficulties.
How do I fit the line into the trimmer? Operating tips
The trimmer is an excellent modern device designed for mowing unnecessary grass, and its main advantage is that this technique can be used in those places where an ordinary lawn mower will simply not be able to reach due to its massiveness. It is necessary to understand in more detail what trimmers are, and how to choose the best option for a particular suburban area.
How to tuck the line into the trimmer?
Any machine for mowing vegetation is necessarily equipped with a spool, which, in turn, may differ in different models with a filament feed system (automatic, semi-automatic and manual). It is from this parameter that it is worth starting from before deciding how to fill the line into the trimmer.
In order to tuck the line into the trimmer, you need to take at least 5 meters of material, which is then folded in half. The center of the cutting element must be inserted into a specially designated place, and then the cutting attachment must be wound using the visual cues on the spool indicating the direction. At the end of all the work, the lid, of course, will need to be tightened.
What is a trimmer?
This equipment is based on the following elements:
- A motor whose main function is to rotate the cutting head at the end of the rod;
- Directly the head, consisting of a reel on which either a fishing line or a knife can be wound;
- Knives or fishing line rotating at high speed, which are the main cutting part of the device, how to load the fishing line into the trimmer will go a little further.
An electric device is inferior in power to a gasoline one, so it is ideal for working on a standard plot of land that is adjacent to a house with source of electrical energy. The main positive aspects of this technique are the absence of noise during operation, light weight, ease of use and, of course, environmental friendliness.
As for petrol trimmers, such equipment, of course, is more mobile, so it can be safely transported from place to place and get rid of annoying vegetation in any area. There is no need to use electricity here, which has a positive effect on the functionality of such an apparatus. The cutting attachments can be changed, working with weeds of various types.
One of the most common attachments is the fishing line, so you should dwell on this element in more detail.
One of the main rules when replacing and adjusting equipment is that any manipulations with the mechanism should be carried out exclusively with the engine off and the device plug disconnected from the mains.
Perhaps these tips will tell you how to tuck the line into the trimmer as correctly as possible and, accordingly, give your site a neat and aesthetic appearance. All that is required is to correctly select the cutting material required by the type and, of course, to determine the category of the most used trimmer.
How to tuck the line into the trimmer?
In order for the area near the house to always look well-groomed and neat, it must be cut regularly. Fortunately, modern technology allows you to solve this problem without excessive physical effort. Electric trimmers are so easy to operate and maintain that even a teenager can use them to mow. The main thing is to figure out in advance how to fill the line in the trimmer.
How to load the line into the trimmer?
So, our task is to properly load the line into the trimmer. Let’s take a closer look at where to start implementing it and what pitfalls can await us in the process.
Step 1. Choosing the line
Step 2. Remove the coil from the trimmer
To perform this operation, the trimmer must be disconnected from the mains and turned over with the working head up. The further course of action depends on the trimmer model and the design of the coil itself:
- For small trimmers with a lower engine position, press the keys located on the sides of the coil and remove its upper part from the head;
- On trimmers with a curved bar, we clamp the coil body with one hand, while simultaneously turning the winglet located on the body counterclockwise;
- For trimmers with a straight bar and a gearbox, insert a screwdriver into the hole located under the coil, and then turn the coil body counterclockwise.
Step 3. Disassemble the coil
After the coil is removed from the head, it must be carefully disassembled. It is better to do this on an already mown area, since there may be a spring inside the coil, which will be quite difficult to find in tall grass. After disassembly, we will have three parts on our hands: the body (top cover), the protective casing and the coil itself.
Step 4. Measure the required amount of fishing line
Newbie mowers are usually interested in how many meters of line to wind on the trimmer reel? There are two ways to resolve this issue:
- Unwind a skein of line on a flat, dry place and separate half of it.
- Measure 3-4 meters of line from the skein.
In any case, after the end of winding, the turns of the line should be on the body of the reel, without sliding off it. You do not need to try to wind as much as possible, as the line will unwind poorly and often break.
Step 5. Wind the line onto the reel
How to attach the line to the trimmer depends on the coil design. Consider the option when the coil body has one outlet for the line. In this case, we clamp the end of the line in the crevice of the coil, and then we wind the line, trying to lay the turns as tightly as possible. The direction of laying the turns should be opposite to the direction of rotation of the coil and is usually indicated on its inner part. After the end of winding on the spool, you must put on a protective cover and bring the end of the line into it
If the reel is designed to work with two tails, then the line must be folded in half and laid in the groove in the center of the reel. Further winding will be carried out along one or two slots, depending on the coil design. The direction of winding must also be opposite to the direction of rotation of the coil. At the end of the ponytail, the line will also need to be led out into the holes on the top of the reel.

Now, having removed and disassembled the coil, we proceed, in fact, to winding.
How to wind the line correctly on the trimmer spool
Many, having worked out the factory line on a recently purchased trimmer, try to wind a new one, but cannot, because they do not know how to properly wind the line on the trimmer spool (bobbin). It seems that there is an instruction, but it still does not work. Let’s try in this article to deal with this issue.
So, in order to wind the line, you first need to remove the coil from the trimmer. This will be more convenient. The removal method will depend on the type of trimmer.
Removing the coil from the trimmer
On small, bottom motor electric trimmers (when operating near the ground), the reel usually has two buttons on the sides. Click on them and disconnect one half of the coil body from the second, which remains on the trimmer. Together with the first half, the inner part is also taken out, on which the fishing line is directly wound. When disassembling, be careful: there is a spring inside that can fly out and get lost.
On electric and gasoline trimmers with a curved bar (there is still no way to put a knife on such trimmers), you need to wrap the coil body itself with one hand, and with the other hand you need to start rotating the lamb on it counterclockwise. It is he who attaches the coil to the trimmer bar. Having unscrewed the lamb, carefully remove the entire coil, trying not to lose the spring inside.
On electric and gasoline trimmers with a straight bar and a gearbox at its end (on such trimmers, in addition to fishing line, you can also install a knife), we look for a hole under the coil, insert, for example, a screwdriver into it, quietly rotate the coil until the screwdriver crawls even deeper, and the coil will lock. Now we turn the whole coil clockwise (since the thread is left-hand) and remove it from the trimmer. Then we disassemble the coil. It can be assembled with latches or twisted with a lamb. If the coil is on latches, then press on the sides on the base of the latches so that they bend and release one half of the coil body from the other. We just unscrew the lamb. There may also be a third type of connection between the two halves of such a coil: with it, you need to grab the lower part with one hand, and the upper part with the other, and start turning them in opposite directions. When disassembling such a coil, you also need to make sure that the spring inside is not lost.
If your coil is designed to work with only one tendril, then it’s simple. You need to unwind 2-4 m of fishing line (depending on the size of the reel), find a fixing hole for the line on the inside of the reel, insert one end of the line there and start winding the line in the direction opposite to the direction of rotation of the reel on the trimmer. On the inside of the reel, they usually indicate with an arrow in which direction to wind the line. Having reeled the fishing line, we leave a small piece of it unwound in order to expose it outside. We fix this piece in a special groove located on the inner part of the reel and designed so that the line does not unwind at the time of collecting the reel. If there is no such groove, then you will have to hold the fishing line with your finger to prevent it from unwinding during the further collection of the coil. Next, we take the outer part of the coil and thread the outer piece of fishing line into the existing hole, collect and put the coil back on the trimmer.
If the coil is designed to work with two antennae, then do the following. On the inside of the reel, we look at how many grooves there are for winding the fishing line. There may be one or two of them. If there is only one groove, then both tendrils are wound along this one groove. If there are two grooves, then each antenna is wound along its own groove. A reel with one groove must have a through hole through which the line is threaded. We rewind 2-4 m of fishing line, thread it through this hole so that it sticks out equally on each side of the fishing line. And we simultaneously wind both antennae of the fishing line in the same direction, opposite to the direction of rotation of the coil on the trimmer and coinciding with the direction indicated by the arrow on the inside of the coil. We leave a little of the fishing line unwound, fix the resulting ends in special grooves, and if they are not there, we hold them with our fingers. We pass both ends into the existing holes on the outer casing of the coil. We collect the coil and attach it to the trimmer.
If there are two grooves, fold a piece of fishing line 2-4 m long in half, insert the loop obtained at the place of the fold into the groove between the two grooves, and simultaneously wind both ends of the fishing line along its own groove. Further actions are similar to the previous option.
There are also reels in which the fishing line is threaded through a through hole on the inside. After that, the ends of the line, without winding, are threaded completely through the holes on the outer body of the reel, collect the reel and begin to rotate the button, which is usually pressed, in order to release the line during operation as it wears out. Rotate the button. The fishing line itself is wound inside. At the same time, it will not work to turn it in the “wrong” direction, since it can only rotate in one direction. If you get used to it, you can wind fishing line on such a reel without even disassembling it. You just need to combine the through hole of the inner drum with the holes on the outer body of the reel, and then thread the line through them.
That’s all on this issue. Happy winding!
Worst failure scenario
There are times when the starter is still working, but it can break, for example, a worn out cord. The ratchet has not yet had time to work when the engine is started, and the remnants of the cord are immediately wound on the reel, the return spring loses its hooks, the grooves in the starter housing break. Bottom line. Replacement of both springs and housings.
How to assemble a new lawn mower starter?
For starter assembly do the following manipulations.
- Pass one end of the cord through the opening at the beginning of the spool and tie it in a knot. The knot must not pass through the hole. Otherwise, you will disassemble the starter again.
- Wind the cord onto the spool itself.
- Install the spring into the starter housing, hook one end of it in the groove and wind it. For convenient winding, twist the body counterclockwise.
- Place the ratchet on the spring.
- Hook the return spring to the ratchet itself, attach it to the spool.
- Install the main spring and housing with the assembled ratchet, connect the parts of the starter together and tighten everything with the main bolt.
After assembling the starter, pass the free end of the cord through the hole in the housing for the reel. Re-pass the same end through the hole in the handle that the cord is pulling on. Tie a strong knot on the handle. Check the operation of the starter handbrake.
How does the starter for lawn mowers or trimmers work??
The starter is a generally single and universal mechanism for lawn mowers, trimmers, gasoline and diesel generator sets. It is not a problem to equip them even with a car, motorcycle or scooter, if your vehicle has free space for its installation. It was not for nothing that many Soviet cars and trucks were equipped with a starter tool that vaguely resembles a tire bent twice.
The starter assembly has the following parts:
- Hook ignition spring;
- Cord wound on a reel;
- Return spring;
- Ratchet drive and main spring;
- Mechanism housing protecting the ratchet;
- Locking bolt.
How to replace or replace the starter spring?
If everything is in order with the rope on the starter, suspicion falls on the reel itself. It is activated by a ribbon spring, coiled into a roll. Certain steps must be taken to change the spring.
- Remove the starter from the lawn mower.
- Remove the starter coil.
- Unscrew the main bolt holding the pulley to the housing.
- Pull out the gripping tendrils and spring, the ribbon spring is almost fully extended or coiled into larger diameter rings.
- Hold it in advance.
- Check if the spring is intact (there may be rusty streaks, fractures, etc.). If the hooks at its ends are broken, it will not be possible to bend new ones. High-carbon steel breaks when you try to bend it. Loose hooks are suitable for slight bending.
- Make sure the auxiliary (regular) spring and washers are in place. These parts protect the coil body from being punctured by the ends of the main spring. If the washers and spring are broken, and there are no new ones available, do not tighten the coil bolt tightly, but watch it. It can unscrew and get lost.
- If the main (flat) spring is damaged, insert the same new one. Place the hook on the end of the spring in its place and bend it, inserting coil by coil into the space where it should be.
Spring rewinding takes a minute. Dexterity in this action is acquired quickly.
How to replace or replace the starter spring, see the following.
How tight the spring is cocking?
It is possible to give the spring the necessary potential force necessary for a clear and fast winding of the cord by determining the length of the cord in turns. To prevent the cord handle from drooping, add 1-2 more turns to the number of turns. So, if the cord has a length of 5 turns of the coil, then when charging the spring, turn the coil 6-7 full turns.
Assembling the starter lawn mowers
When servicing and repairing the starter, it is important to assemble it correctly. As if the device was assembled by the manufacturer. Any part that is incorrectly installed will prevent you from fully using your trimmer or lawn mower.
- After winding the spring, turn the coil over and position it so that the second spring hook falls back into place. To control the correct installation of the spring, there are technological windows on the coil itself.
- Install the starter pulley and make sure that one of the spring hooks fits into the groove located on the starter cover.
- Insert the spring and washers on the sides to prevent the spring from rubbing off the plastic compartment in which it is located. If the spring is broken, and the other is not the same, an additional washer is placed instead.
- Insert the antennae cup into the slots of the coil.
- Install the coil in its place, tighten the bolt until it stops, but without fanaticism.
If the mainspring is not shielded to protect the compartment where it moves when the starter cord is wound in and out, the reel will often jam when you try to start the trimmer or lawn mower. Loosening the coil bolt will result in its loss.
