    How and with what to lubricate the shafts in the bar of the lawn mower

    Many new lawn mowers, even sold assembled, do not have boom shaft lubrication. As a result, it heats up, wears out, until the sound of a running motor, a slight whistling grinding is gradually added and vibration appears. To protect the equipment from premature wear, it is enough to take 10 minutes and just lubricate the shaft.

    Disassembly and lubrication

    First you need to disassemble the barbell. In a conventional lawnmower, it is enough to disconnect it from the upper and lower gearboxes.

    If the braid has a two-piece collapsible barbell, this is even easier. It is only required to remove the connecting sleeve in the center and separate the halves.

    After disassembly, 2 shafts fall out easily, while the boom cover from the gearboxes can not be removed.

    How to grease a gas powered weed trimmer

    If the scythe has already worked, then when examining the shaft, or shafts in the case of a collapsible bar, you can notice abrasions from the centering sleeves. Such places need lubrication.

    A small amount of grease should be squeezed onto a cloth or fingers and the shaft should be processed without gaps. It is applied in a thin layer, but everywhere. It is necessary to pay special attention to the slots, since they have the highest load, especially at the moment the scythe knife strikes stones and other objects.

    The lubricated shaft is inserted back into the stay with a slight twisting motion. Due to this, part of the excess grease will remain on the centering sleeves, where it should be. Rotation will also help the splines fit into their seat on the gearboxes.

    If a straight mower with a non-separable bar is being serviced, then it is simply attached back to the gearboxes. In the case of a two-piece boom, the short shafts are each inserted into its own half. After that, the parts of the bar are joined in the center. If their splines do not hit, then you can simply turn the lower gear by hand. Next, the docked rod is clamped back with a coupling.

    If lawn mowers are used infrequently, this boom maintenance should be done every season. The used grease for CV joints withstands high temperatures well, which excludes oil drips during long-term operation of the spit. The same composition can be used for the lubrication of gearboxes. It can be pressed into them with a syringe if the tube does not have a spout. Gearbox lubrication frequency is higher than shaft lubrication. Manufacturers usually recommend doing this every 5 hours.

    Trimmer reducer device

    A trimmer gear is a unit that transmits the rotational motion of the motor shaft to a knife or line. It is located at the lower end of the lawn mower bar. The transfer unit is also designed to reduce the trimmer engine speed.

    The mechanism consists, depending on the model of the lawn mower, of several gears rotating at high speed. As a result, they heat up due to strong friction. If there is not enough lubricant, or there is none at all, then the process leads to severe overheating and failure of parts, and, accordingly, the need to carry out complex repairs. To prevent this from happening, the transmission unit should be lubricated in time. The disassembled gearbox is shown in the photo below.

    Gearboxes of modern trimmers of different models from different manufacturers differ from each other in design and seat size. It happens:

    • round;
    • in the form of an asterisk;
    • square.

    The most common round seat diameters are 24, 25.5 and 26 mm.

    lawn mowers are equipped with gearboxes with different types of gears:

    HOW TO GREASE ‘STIHL TRIMMER’

    • conical;
    • worm;
    • spiroid;
    • cylindrical;
    • planetary;
    • wave;
    • combined.

    The drive shaft and gearbox are heavily loaded trimmer assemblies that are subject to significant wear. Between them, movement is transmitted due to the engagement of the teeth of the gears located at different angles to each other. The gear train works effectively only if there is no mechanical damage. In this case, the mechanism should not overheat, otherwise it may jam.

    Trimmer Gear Lubrication

    Gears must be lubricated regularly in accordance with the recommendations set out in the operating instructions for the model used. This should also be done if:

    • new gears were installed;
    • atypical sounds emanate from the gearbox during trimmer operation;
    • knives turn hard.

    In addition to the gearbox, the trimmer shaft must also be lubricated regularly. This is the norm for proper care of the device.

    With continuous use of the trimmer, the transmission is subjected to stress from grass adhering to the blades, dirt, or due to changes in torque. The lubricant must be selected of high quality in order to extend the life of the gearbox.

    Main gearbox malfunctions and ways to eliminate them

    Various breakdowns occur with the gearbox of an electric or gasoline trimmer. The most common of them are presented in the table below. There you can also find the causes of their occurrence and methods of elimination.

    Gearbox malfunction Possible causes of breakdown Remedy
    the transfer unit is very hot use of an unsuitable (low-quality) lubricant or its absence you need to replace or add lubricant
    the gears are new and not worn for running-in, run for a short time without heavy loads with regular stops so that the mechanism has time to cool down
    jamming of the shaft during rotation, the appearance of backlash and knocking destruction or significant wear of any of the bearings replace the failed bearing with a new one
    the transmission mechanism flies off the mower bar or staggers damage to its hull it is necessary to replace the part
    in some cases, with minor damage with a clamp made of metal, the place is pulled together with a break
    not fixed to the pipe docking wear you can make an insulating tape rewind at the attachment point or change the bar
    the output shaft with a knife does not rotate or stops in case of an increase in load wear of teeth on gears or one of them replacement of the interacting pair of worn parts is required

    Bearings are destroyed due to the use of an unsuitable lubricant or due to lack of it. Also, their damage is caused by the harsh operating conditions of lawn mowers and the ingress of foreign particles of material (for example, broken metal teeth of mechanical transmissions) due to the fact that the integrity of the anthers is broken.

    To remove the bearing, you need to disassemble the gearbox and use a special puller. If it is not there, then you can try to do it with a hammer with a guide. In this case, work should be done carefully so as not to damage the seat. It is not recommended to use the preheating method to shoot the bearing. This is due to the fact that the metal may lose the required performance.

    If the knife stops rotating under load or does not stop at all, then this is accompanied by an uncharacteristic sound.

    Most gearbox problems can be easily fixed by hand. Replaceable parts are recommended to purchase “native”, intended for the model of lawn mowers.

    Repair and lubrication of the trimmer gear

    With frequent, intensive use of lawn mowers, the gearbox may start to warm up or make sounds that are unusual for its normal operation, such as grinding sounds. This indicates that the mechanism needs to be lubricated. If this is not done in time, then more serious problems will arise (for example, gears will quickly wear out and need to be replaced), up to jamming. Other breakdowns also occur with the transmission. Repair and lubrication of the gearbox can be done independently. for this you just need to familiarize yourself with the features of these works and stock up on some of the available tools.

    Algorithm for self-lubrication of the gearbox

    No preliminary disassembly is required to lubricate the transmission. A special hole for these purposes is already embedded in the device (it is shown in the photo below). In addition to gears, when carrying out lubrication, attention should be paid to the following elements of the mechanism:

    • bearing unit;
    • flywheel and starter coil pawl.

    Lubricant injection hole

    Fill in oil or add solid lubricant through a grease nipple closed with a screw. In this case, actions are performed in the following sequence:

    • clean the gearbox housing from dirt and adhered grass, especially carefully the area around the plug so that debris does not get inside the mechanism;
    • using the appropriate tool (often it comes with a trimmer), unscrew the plug;
    • into the open technological hole, the selected lubricant is injected from a tube, or using a syringe, as shown in the photo below;
    • screw the plug into place.

    Gear lubrication

    When applying lubricant, you need to rotate the knife so that it is evenly distributed over the teeth of the moving gears.

    If for any reason the gearbox needs to be disassembled, then the old lubricant must be completely removed from the entire surface of the gears and the housing, the shaft, and only then use a new one. The disassembled mechanism can be conveniently lubricated with solid compounds.

    The entire gear lubrication process is demonstrated in the video:

    Lubrication of the transfer unit is required at least once a year, but it is recommended to do this every 20 hours of intensive use of the lawn mower. If the first signs of malfunctions with the mechanism appear, then the lubricant must be applied as soon as possible.

    Used types of grease

    When choosing a lubricant, the following factors must be considered:

    • the degree of adhesion of the composition to the metal of the assembly;
    • product brand;
    • lubricant consumption by the transmission mechanism.

    Well-known manufacturers, for example, Stihl, Husqvarna and others, apart from trimmers, also produce lubricants for them. These products not only reduce wear, but also protect the gear metal from corrosion. Therefore, for lawn mowers from these brands, it is better to use their own lubricant products.

    If the compound used for lubrication has good adhesion, then it is practically not squeezed out of the gearbox through the gaps.

    Different models have different grease consumption. This is largely due to the intensity of use of the lawn mowers and the heating of the transmission. It is considered that the lubricant is sufficient if the temperature of the reducer during operation does not exceed 40 ° C.

    By consistency, trimmer lubricants can be:

    • liquid;
    • semi-liquid;
    • solid;
    • plastic.

    In terms of composition, the following types of lubricants are in demand:

    • graphite, significantly reducing friction, as a result of which the rotation of the gears improves;
    • lithium, which is also an excellent anti-corrosion composition, saturated with additives that increase the wear resistance of the metal without harmful substances;
    • universal components containing highly refined mineral oils and improving performance characteristics.

    Examples of suitable lubricants are: Champion EP-0, Gear Grease OREGON, Oleo-Mas, Azmol 158, Litol. 24. You should also pay attention to the advice of manufacturers on this issue and use the materials they offer. You can buy them at specialized retail outlets.

    How to replace the trimmer gear: the algorithm of actions

    To replace the gearbox with a similar part from the same manufacturer, it must first be disassembled and removed from the rod. In this case, they act according to the following algorithm:

    • loosen the tie bolts located under the transmission;
    • using round nose pliers, remove two corkscrews;
    • using a puller, pull the bearings off the driven and drive shafts;
    • then the mechanism is assembled, in the reverse order, installing all the parts.

    The disassembled transmission mechanism is shown in the photo below.

    If the puller is not at hand, then you can try to gently knock down the bearings. When they are stuck and do not budge at all, you can heat them with an industrial hair dryer (at a temperature of 600 ° C) and remove.

    Assembling the transfer assembly is easier than disassembling it. You may only need to tap lightly with a hammer to set the parts in place. After assembly, it is imperative to check that the driven shaft can be rotated by hand.

    When there is a need to replace the transfer unit with a non-original part, then their interchangeability should be taken into account. It should be borne in mind:

    • rod diameter (this parameter is often 25.4 or 26 mm);
    • the parameters of the drive shaft. the shape of the docking place and the diameter (its common value is 8 mm);
    • protection fixing option.

    If the considered parameters match, then it will be possible to install a part from other models.

    Timely lubrication of the gearbox will ensure its long-term operation without repairs. In addition, modern materials protect the metal well from corrosion and increase its wear resistance. When choosing, preference should be given to the lubricant recommended by the manufacturer of the trimmer being operated. If it is not possible to acquire such compositions, then the considered or other analogs suitable for their properties should be used. When it is necessary to disassemble the mechanism during repairs, this should be done carefully so as not to damage individual parts.

    Removing and Lubricating the Upper Trimmer Shaft

    First of all, we remove the lower part of the rod from the connecting sleeve, and then disconnect the sleeve from the upper part of the rod (here we are talking about the sleeve connecting the two halves of the rod).

    Trimmer PRORAB-8406 with disconnected clutch and lower part of the bar

    Now the most interesting thing: in some videos, like this one, holding the shaft coupling sticking out of the upper part of the rod from below with pliers, they knock it out of the rod with pliers along with the rolling bearing (here we are talking about the coupling connecting the upper and lower shafts). On some lawn mowers with a collapsible bar, as in the video, the coupling connecting the upper and lower shafts is pressed into the rolling bearing.

    With our PRORAB-8406 trimmer and others like it, this number will not work. They do not have a rolling bearing, and the coupling (sleeve) is an extension of the upper rod shaft. A circlip is installed in the upper part of this shaft, which must first be removed.

    The place of attachment of the upper part of the rod to the clutch housing

    • Unscrew the central screw completely. It fixes the top of the rod by partially entering the hole drilled in it. Loosen the side clamping screws and remove the rod from the clutch housing.
    • We push the shaft out of the upper part of the rod towards ourselves, as far as play allows, in order to get to the retaining ring and remove it. A special puller may be needed. Removing the retaining ring.

    Retaining ring on the upper shaft of the lawn mower

    • Without the circlip, the upper shaft can be easily removed from the rod from the opposite side. Lubricate it, not forgetting about the slots in the bushings (couplings) on the rod shaft and on the clutch shaft.
    • Put the lubricated shaft in place in the upper part of the rod and fix it with a retaining ring. Insert the rod into the hole in the clutch cover and align the hole on the rod with the threaded hole of the fixing screw.
    • Screw in the retaining screw and secure the upper part of the trimmer bar with the side screws in the clutch cover.
    • We clean the connecting sleeve of the rod from debris and install it from below on the upper part of the rod.

    I don’t have a puller, but I use two large paper clips to remove the retaining ring. First, they need to be straightened, on the one hand, make half rings for the fingers, and on the other, bend small hooks.

    We grab the holes in the retaining ring with hooks and try to push them apart. With difficulty, but it turns out, and the ring starts to move. If you know another way to remove the circlip without a puller, share in the comments.

    In many videos, the masters recommend using grease for the CV joints, this is the best option. In its absence, litol-24 can be used to lubricate the shaft of the lawn mower, which is oriented to temperatures up to 130 ° C. But solid oil, which has the worst lubricating properties and works at temperatures up to 70 ° C, is not recommended to be used.

    However, if you urgently need to lubricate the shaft of the lawn mower, and there are no suitable materials, then grease or even ordinary engine oil will be better than nothing at all.

    Lubrication of the shafts of lawn mowers, trimmers

    Dismantling the lawn mower bar (gasoline trimmer) for shaft lubrication using the example of the PRORAB-8406 lawn mower. Removing the shaft from the rod is slightly different than shown in some of the videos on the internet. Consider when disassembling such devices.

    Removing and lubricating the lawn mower’s lower shaft

    To remove the shaft from the bottom of the rod, first remove the coil reducer.

    Lower trimmer gearbox PRORAB-8406

    • Unscrew the fully central locking screw. On the reverse side of the lower clamping screw, unscrew the nut and unscrew the screw completely in order to disconnect the coil reducer from the protective casing.
    • Loosen the upper clamping screw and remove the lower part of the shaft from the coil gearbox housing. We take out the lower shaft from the rod from the gearbox side.
    • We clean the shaft from contamination and lubricate it with grease for CV joints or lithol-24, not forgetting to clean and lubricate the coupling (sleeve) with splines in the gearbox.
    • We install the shaft into the bar, and the bar into the lower gear of the lawn mowers and align the hole on the bar with the hole for the central screw. We turn in the central screw. Next, we wrap the lower screw, clamp the lower part of the rod in the gear case with the upper and lower screws and tighten the nut on the back of the lower screw.
    • Add 20-30 ml of grease to the coil reducer through the hole closed with the screw located in the photo on the right.

    In the operating instructions for the petrol trimmer PRORAB 8405M, 8406M, it is recommended to lubricate the gearbox with grease or its analogs, in extreme cases, fill in liquid engine oil. Excess oil will leak out as the gearbox does not have seals.

    In the user’s manual for the petrol trimmer PRORAB 8402P, 8403P, 8405P, 8406P it is written that engine oil for two-stroke engines can be used as a lubricant for the gearbox. There is no mention of solid oil and its analogues.

    In order not to bother, lubricate the lower gear of your lawn mowers with the same grease as the boom shaft, or fill in engine oil.

    Time and procedure for preventive maintenance of the gearbox

    I recommend in order to carry out preventive maintenance of a new gasoline trimmer immediately after purchase, with the addition of lubricant to the gearbox. With all the high cost of garden equipment, some manufacturers save money and put in lubricant only at a minimum, for the run-in time.

    How to lubricate the trimmer gear

    Disassembled lawn mowers gearbox

    Almost every lawn mower gearbox is equipped with a small technological hole, which is plugged with a special bolt during operation. After thoroughly cleaning the unit from grass residues and debris, it is necessary to unscrew the screw and inject from 1.5 to 3 ml of grease into the gearbox cavity, depending on the brand of the tool. For ease of dosing, you can use a traditional medical syringe. During the operation, foreign particles and objects must not be allowed to enter the gearbox, as this can lead to intense wear of the gear train, as well as its jamming.

    Experts recommend that at the end of the mowing season and long-term storage of the tool without work, disassemble the gearbox, flush the gears and bearings, and re-lubricate the unit.

    Lubricant for famous brands of trimmers

    Each brand of petrol trimmers always recommends their own production of lawn mowers gear lubricant.

    • Husqvarna. This Swedish manufacturer recommends the use of Multi-Purpose Grease Grasa Universal. This material is available in blue-black tubes with a volume of 225 or 250 grams. According to the company, this trimmer gear grease has been specially developed for Husqvarna machines, taking into account the steels and working speeds used.
    • Stihl. For Stihl FS series lawn mowers, the manufacturer advises to use Stihl Superlub FS gear lubricant, offered in 225 gram tubes or 80 gram disposable containers, silver-orange.
    • Patriot. It is recommended to service the lawn mower reducers of this brand with the original Arsenal AR-417 lithium grease. It is specially designed for geared gears operating at high speeds and temperatures.
    • Huter. For the bevel gear of the tool models of this Huter company, you can use any of the above brands of gear lubricants, as well as universal types of Rezoil, CIATIM and others.
    • Champion. CHAMPION Super-Lube EP-O is the recommended lubricant in the Champion Lawn Mower Owner’s Manual. The material is supplied in a 250 gram jar or in a Premium Champion C1104 disposable oiler.
    • Makita. This Japanese manufacturer advises its consumers to use Makita branded lubricant, which comes in 65 ml and 80 ml white tubes with red caps.

    Checking the correct lubrication of the gearbox angle grinder

    The last step in servicing your angle grinder is to check that the lubricant is correctly applied and distributed inside the gearbox. To do this, after the gear unit is assembled, the power tool is turned on without load for several minutes, while ensuring that there are no extraneous sounds, odors, and other things. If they occur, you must immediately disconnect the angle grinder from the mains. The heating of the gear unit is also checked. The lubricant must distribute heat evenly and the temperature of the gear unit must not be too high.

    After a short work, unscrew 4 screws, then remove the cover from the gearbox. Visually inspect the helical gears for lubrication. If it is absent, then too little lubricant has been loaded and should be reported. If in the process of work it is squeezed out of the cracks, then it has been laid too much and the excess should be removed. After making any changes, check the operation of the angle grinder again without load.

    Gasoline Trimmer Reducer Lubricant

    Range of lubricants for garden equipment

    Use a special transmission fluid grease to lubricate the bevel gear according to the instructions. As a rule, manufacturers of garden equipment produce and recommend the chemistry of their brand, as the most adapted to their devices.

    At the same time, in order to reduce the cost of operating garden equipment and increase the attractiveness of the auto chemistry brand, the lubricant for garden equipment is usually made multifunctional. It is intended not only for lubricating the gearboxes of gasoline trimmers, but also for the treatment of hoses, gears and gearboxes of any garden equipment and mechanical devices operating under high loads.

    This gear lubricant is sold in tubes that are easy to use and store.

    Even if a specialized gear lubricant is almost completely depleted during operation, additives still create an effective lubricating protective film on the surface of the gears.

    It should be noted that many owners of lawn mowers in the vastness of the former CIS use ordinary Litol-24 or lithium-based grease for CV joints to lubricate the gearbox. It is convenient to fill the reducer using a 5-cc medical syringe.

    The undoubted plus of using Litol and lithium-based grease for filling the transmission of lawn mowers is a reduction in the cost of operation. But there are nuances due to which spears break on the forums of gardeners of the Internet space. My thoughts on what can be lubricated with lithium-based lubricants and what not can be found in the article “Litol as Lubrication of the Lawn Mowers Gearbox”.
