How To Make A Drill Stand

We make a stand for a drill with our own hands The stand for a drill is a special supporting structure that allows you to “unload” your hands while drilling.

How to choose the dimensions of the rack parts?

If you want to create a drill stand, then decide how exactly the assembled device will be used.

For work aimed exclusively at drilling holes, you can use wooden racks or racks made of high-quality chipboard or fiberboard materials.

If the rack will be used not only as a drilling, but also as a lathe or milling machine, then it is better to form it from a special perforated stainless metal, which has high strength and is impervious to heat permissible during the declared work.

To make a wooden frame that serves as a support for the structure, a metal or wooden plate should be used, the dimensions of which should be considerable.

The minimum dimensions for the metal bed must be 50050015 millimeters. For a wooden bed, the dimensions should be slightly different. 60060030 millimeters.

When manufacturing a multifunctional device suitable for drilling, turning and milling work, the dimensions of the bed should be increased (100060030 millimeters).

The length of the stand, which will hold the weight of the drill, should fluctuate within six hundred to eight hundred millimeters, the width. Within two hundred to two hundred and fifty millimeters.

A steel ring must be fixed on it, which will serve as a holder for the drill. It is important that the open diameter of the split ring is greater than the diameter of the drill used.

In order not to damage the body of the unit used during work and to reduce possible vibration, a special rubber gasket should be used when attaching the drill to the ring.

The assembly of the structure takes place according to the following scheme. First, you need to fasten the bed and the stand at a right angle, securing the connection area with screws and glue.

In some cases, you can give the rack stability by using an additional support located outside the working area.

After the stand is attached, the bases of the rails for the drill should be fixed to it, so that it can move freely within the working area.

The moving part of the attached guides will serve as a base for the carriage with a drill, which is played by a metal clamp.

It is not recommended to use wooden blocks for attaching the drill, as they cannot guarantee complete fixation of the device.

Learn more about drill stands

Is it possible to make a drill stand on your own, without the involvement of expensive and rare mechanisms and materials? Of course, yes.

The drill stand for a drill has certain design features.

  • Stand (or bed), which is a reliable support for other structural parts;
  • A tripod (or stand) that can support the weight of the drill;
  • Guides that allow you to move the drill horizontally (and sometimes vertically).

Any high-quality material with high density can be used as a bed.

It is best to use either natural wood or several furniture boards held together with quality glue.

The thicker the bed, the less vibration will be produced by the machine during work.

The tripod, on which the guides and the drill will be mounted, are best made of a wooden or metal perforated bar.

Before making the machine, you need to carefully study the drawings of such structures and see which describes the step-by-step process of assembling the rack.

The diagram of a drilling machine intended for use in a domestic environment is not complicated. Even those who do not have special specific skills can figure out its nuances.

If a self-made DIY drill stand is successful, then you will receive:

  • Simple but functional framework;
  • Compact dimensions that allow placing the mechanism both on the table and on any other working surface;
  • Relatively low vibration level;
  • Improving the quality of the work result (in comparison with manual drilling of holes);
  • Low cost of parts.

When making a stand for a drill, it is important to remember that all static components of the structure should be securely fastened to each other in order to prevent possible damage to the material being processed.

Insecure fastening of parts can cause strong vibration, which will make adjustments to the accuracy of work.

Do-it-yourself drill stand

Drill stand. A special supporting structure that allows you to “unload” your hands while drilling.

To make a stand for a drill with your own hands, you should take into account a number of important nuances, which will be described in the article.

Drill stand: creating a drilling machine with your own hands

If you need a drilling machine, it is not necessary to purchase it right away. Special drill stands allow you to expand the functionality of the most affordable home tool so much that buying a machine becomes impractical. They cost much less, and if you wish, you can make a stand for a drill with your own hands according to the drawings.

Purpose and features

The holder for a drill (or screwdriver) working on the principle of vertical drilling is used to perform such technological operations as:

  • Precise drilling of holes to a given depth, their boring and finishing;
  • Chamfering, forming recesses and grooves (countersinking);
  • Tapping (if the power of the drill and the strength of the stand structure allows).

However, it should be understood that such devices do not have a bearing capacity comparable to that of factory equipment. Therefore, it is not recommended to drill hard material with great force.

Drilling machine drives

When drafting a do-it-yourself drill holder assembly project, you should decide on the type of lifting and lowering mechanism that serves to feed the drill vertically to the part. It is he who is the main characteristic of the machine. The following mechanisms are distinguished:

  • Spring loaded;
  • Articulated;
  • Screw;
  • Rope;
  • On the basis of a toothed rack.

Spring, spring-hinge and hinge installations are easiest to assemble with your own hands. Drawings of a drilling machine from a spring-type drill suggest placing a spring either directly at the handle or at the base of the carriage in special grooves. In the absence of additional clamps, it will be impossible to perform milling with such machines, since they require constant manual control of the drill position.

Screw mechanisms work on the principle of jacks of the same name. They are based on a vertically positioned pipe with an applied thread, allowing rotation around its axis. The pipe has a nut welded to the drill holder. When the pipe rotates, the nut and the tool holder change their position. For additional stability of the tool during operation, it is also allowed to supply the mount with a friction clutch.

The carriage cable drive consists of a tightly stretched metal cable, a spool welded with a tool holder, and support bows at the upper and lower ends of the guide. The metal cable is wound around the reel and stretched over the shackles so that the reel does not slide down under the weight of the equipment. The ends of the cable are wound into loops and remain on the bed. It is recommended to choose the length of the cable with a margin so that it remains possible to use one mechanism on guides of different sizes.

A metal machine consists of similar units, but it is more difficult to make them due to the complexity of material processing. The advantage of the design is reliability, no backlash, which is ideal for installing additional units that expand the functionality of the machine.

The general device of a metal machine is shown in the drawing, and the procedure for manufacturing the structure is as follows:

  • For the bed, you need a steel plate 1 cm thick. The dimensions can be taken similar to those of the wooden model.
  • The stand is welded from a square or round pipe with a cross section of 32–40 mm. You can weld a sleeve of a larger diameter onto the stove, and insert a pipe into it and clamp it with a bolt.
  • The carriage is made from a pipe with a larger diameter. It should fit freely on the rack. A steel drill clamp is fixed to the carriage.

Now it remains to fold all the nodes into one structure and try to fix the drill with clamps.

Photo enlarger machine

If an old photo enlarger is lying around at home, then it can be quickly rebuilt into a drilling machine. The design has a ready-made bed with a stand and even a control mechanism with a handle, but only without springs. The drill will have to be raised and lowered by turning the original enlarger handle. To manufacture the machine, it is enough to disconnect the tank where the lamp with lenses is installed, and instead of it, fix the clamp for the drill.

Manufacturing of a control mechanism

The main working unit of a wooden and metal machine is the carriage movement mechanism. It consists of a control handle and a spring. The last element is required to return the carriage to its original position.

Depending on the place where the spring is installed, two variants of the return mechanism can be made:

  • The first version of the mechanism provides for the installation of a spring near the control handle. From above, two metal plates are welded to the end of the rack from one and the other edge. A hole is drilled in the first two plates. An axis is made from a bolt with a diameter of 10 mm, and the end of the handle is fixed. A spring is placed between the other two plates. To prevent it from slipping off, pins are welded on the rack and handle. On the side of the handle at the point of fixation to the carriage pin, a longitudinal groove is cut, necessary for the correct operation of the mechanism.
  • The second version of the mechanism provides for the installation of two springs from the bottom of the carriage. They are placed in the guide grooves fixed at the ends of the telescopic furniture elements. The control handle is fixed to the end of the rack in a similar way, only the spring is not installed under it.

The principle of operation of any mechanism is simple. During drilling, the handle is pressed downward, while the springs are compressed. The drill carriage goes down. Upon completion of drilling, the handle is released. The expanding springs return the carriage up to its original position.
