Paper for quilling, bought there, is not expensive, which allows you to create bright, high-quality crafts without much hassle. The quilling stick is designed for twisting such a basic element as a tight and loose spiral, from which many other shapes are subsequently created. Followers of oriental masters twist paper rolls using a thin awl, sticking a finger to the end of the strip at the beginning of the work.

In this time-consuming process, the spirals turn out neat, with a small middle.

The more common ones have a handy handle and a fork at the end of the tool, into which the edge of the strip is inserted, followed by the formation of a spiral.

Elements of quilling

To make a quality product in the technique of quilling, you must correctly prepare the materials from which the elements will be made. The ideal paper is considered to be that which has a density of at least 100gr, and preferably 115-160gr. The width of the strips varies from 3 to 5 mm. It is not necessary to buy ready-made kits for quilling with cut paper, as it is quite possible to do it yourself. For example, you can make a marking with a pencil and ruler, and some use templates by which to create blanks.

There is a special machine that shreds paper. As a rule, it is used in offices to destroy unnecessary documentation, but it will be the ideal assistant for preparing strips for later use in handicrafts.

20 AMAZING KRAFT PAPER IDEAS

It is not uncommon to see the performance of paintings and crafts in the technique of quilling, where each element is made not only of one color, and from several. For this it is enough to glue two or more strips together by means of PVA glue. Children and adults can do quilling, and it will be a great activity for family gatherings, for the development of motor skills and logical thinking. In such a technique you can make a variety of products, from small Easter eggs to large vases. Naturally, before you start working you need to investigate what equipment and devices are needed, as well as what elements there are in quilling and the peculiarities of their production.

It is worth noting that any kid will be able to cope with the fact that it will be necessary to make the basic elements for the future masterpiece:

  • For twisting a spiral, you can use a toothpick, as well as an excellent idea awl or a small stick. In this way the spiral of the free form is created. As soon as the spiral has unwound naturally, its tip should be secured with PVA glue. It is used because the composition does not leave yellow stains and dries quickly.
  • To make a spiral-drop, you need to slightly press down one end of the spiral.
  • For a curved drop the tip is not only compressed but also bent.
  • An eye spiral is a spiral squeezed from two sides.
  • The sheet is made by clamping the two ends of the spiral and bending them.
  • The triangle must necessarily have three corners and completely resemble a real geometric figure. To do this, you first need to squeeze two corners and then another.
  • An arrow is made by transforming a triangle into an arrow, by connecting two edges.

These are the basic elements that are used to make crafts in the technique of quilling. In fact, there are many more models that are conversions of the above elements. Each constituent looks simple enough and it is quite possible to make them with your own hands, if you carry out weaving step by step and without distracting from the instructions.

Devices for quilling figures

In many profile stores, ready-made sets of rulers and tools are sold, which facilitate the process of doing the work.

Paper for quilling, bought there, is not expensive, which allows you to create bright, high-quality crafts without much trouble. The quilling wand is designed for twisting such a basic element as a tight and free spiral, from which many other figures are subsequently created. Followers of Oriental craftsmen twist paper rolls using a thin awl, holding the tip of the strip with a finger at the beginning of the work.

In this labor-intensive process, the spirals turn out neat, with a small middle.

What can replace the quilting stick

To make a similar tool to the wand, the most common improvised means that can be found in every home, namely:

There are several options for making quilling sticks with your own hands. Use a regular toothpick, getting rid of the sharp end and splitting it with a knife. You don’t need to make any cuts, just use it as a whole.

Take an empty inkpot rod, make a small notch along it carefully with a penknife, about 5 mm. That’s it, the stick for quilling is ready. Pick up two needles and a rod from a gel pen. Get rid of the metal tip and ink residue. Place the two needles inside so that the ends of the required length peek out from the outside, put a part of the toothpick between the two needles, thus fixing them.

Make a stick using a cork plug and needle. To do this, its ear is broken off, and the sharp end is inserted into the cork.

It is possible to fix with superglue a needle or a pin at some distance in any solid base, felt-tip pen. Remove some lead from the pencil, insert the needle there, fill the empty hole with glue.

When making such a tool, keep in mind the safety precautions so as not to hurt yourself, cuts, wounds.

Quilling jewelry with their own hands. A fashion trend in the world of handmade

Hi friends! Until recently I was totally convinced that the products requiring delicate treatment in the technique of quilling are mainly destined to static use. to hang on the wall or, for example, on the Christmas tree, put / put on a shelf or table and admire. ๐Ÿ™‚ But, as it turned out, in this kind of needlework there is and rather successfully develops such seemingly incompatible with the fragility of the material, as quilling costume jewelry. Imagine: earrings, bracelets, necklaces, rings made of paper. all this is as functional as it is beautiful. It is possible to make jewelry in the technique of quilling by hand for absolutely everyone, you just need to master the basic technology. And Ekaterina Shkodovskaya will help us in this.

So, using a simple example, I will show you how you can make exclusive decorations in the quilling technique with the simplest materials.

We are going to make a bijouterie set of earrings and a bracelet.

Metal rings, pins and a clasp for the bracelet.

Let’s start by choosing the color scheme for the future jewelry. I want to make my set in a nautical style, so I chose white and blue colors of paper quilling strips.

Earrings in the technique of quilling.

We take half of the white strip and start turning a tight roll. At the very end of the strip, we paste half a strip of blue color to it and go on twisting.

Make sure our roll won’t unravel accidentally. It should remain tight and dense.

Finishing the blue stripe, glue the white stripe again, but not half, and the whole. Since the diameter of the roll gradually increases, and now we need a strip longer.

Continue to twist. Then we glue the blue one again.

According to my idea the earrings will not be very big in diameter, that’s why after the blue one I am winding only another 1.5 white strips. At the very end it is necessary to fix the metal ring (I untwisted it beforehand using scissors), letting a couple of coils of paper strip through it.

Then everything is simple: we put a pendant in the ring and close the last one.

Repeat this entire procedure a second time. and the earrings are ready.

A bracelet in the quilling technique.

Since we are talking about a single set of jewelry, we are going to make the links of the bracelet in the same way we make the earrings. Just note that in each element of the bracelet you need to insert 2 metal rings, placing them on opposite sides.

Then with the help of these rings all the elements are connected into a chain.

If necessary, we can lengthen the bracelet by adding more elements-rolls. Once we have the right size, we attach the clasp.

That’s all, a set of costume jewelry made of paper is ready. Only need to varnish it, or if there is no varnish, you can glaze the piece with PVA glue, and then splash with hairspray.

Thus, showing a little fantasy and playing with colors, you can embody the most diverse patterns and images in quilling jewelry and create original jewelry to your own taste and mood. ๐Ÿ™‚

For example, you can make fun earrings-fish for a girl. from the elements of the wave and two curls. Or geometric earrings. from a rectangular outline and circles of different sizes glued into it.

As you can see, there is nothing complicated in the technology of paper bijouterie. If you know how to make the basic elements of quilling, then you are already capable of a lot =).

See what kind of earrings you can get from regular little rolls and a couple of paper rings:

And here’s what floral ornament for the earrings came up with quilling by self-taught craftswoman Victoria Brewer from the UK:

By the way, a wonderful decorative element for jewelry can be flowers quilling, such as roses

Even in fruits and vegetables you can find source of inspiration for creating intricate decorations, as it was done by the Ukrainian quilling master Katya Vrublevskaya (http://kasia-wroblewska.blogspot.in).

A crab made of paper in the technique of quilling with his hands

In the technique of quilling you can create entire paintings. If a panel with a marine theme is planned, a crab made of paper strips will be appropriate on it. A step-by-step creation of this representative of crustaceans is given in our next master class.

To make the crab, prepare the following materials:

  • Red paper strips (6 pcs.);
  • 1 black strip;
  • 1 white strip;
  • PVA glue;
  • twisting tool;
  • A special ruler for quilling;
  • scissors.

For the body of the crab we need a whole strip of red paper (6 pcs. Twist it and put it in a ruler with the size of 20 mm.

We take out a circle, and then paste the edge of the strip.

To create the limbs, we need to cut the strips in half. Each part is twisted into a roll and placed in a ruler with the size of 15 mm.

Flatten the future limb part.

We need to make 6 such pieces.

The front limbs of the crab will consist of two elements. For one of them, we twist the strip and place it in a circle with the size of 20 mm.

The other part of the claw is made from a 15 mm circle. After that, two parts should be glued together.

In the same way we make the second claw of the crab.

Begin assembling our handicraft. First glue the limbs on one side of the body.

Then fix the other limbs symmetrically.

To make the eyes let’s glue the halves of the black and white stripes together.

Roll them into tight rolls and fix the edges with glue.

Glue the eyes. Our quilling crab is ready.

Paper quilling frog

A cute green frog sits on a pebble and waits to be quilted in the technique of quilling. And it is not difficult to do!

Each part of the body will consist of a certain element in this technique of needlework: a tight or free roll, an eye, a drop, etc. ะด.

  • paper strips of blue, green, white and dark brown;
  • a tool for twisting strips;
  • ruler stencil;
  • scissors;
  • glue.

Create a frog in the technique of quilling without the green strips simply impossible! Therefore, the first thing to do is to take one strip and start twisting it on a special tool in the form of a pen, where there is a bifurcated end at the top.

We carefully remove the obtained roll from the tool and place it in the ruler-pencil slot with number 15. Let it untwist a little and fix the tip with glue. Let’s put a ready free roll to the side. In such a way we will make the second roll.

The second basic figure clamp the fingers on both sides to get an element in the form of an eye.

Join the two pieces together to make the head and torso of the frog.

Then we create the eyes. They will have three colors. For this purpose, cut off a small portion of the brown strip. Begin to roll on the tool.

Glue a strip of white color to the end. Continue to roll.

Cut off a small piece of green stripe. Glue its end to the white part of the roll.

We continue to tighten the roll and get one eye for the frog.

Let’s put it in a stencil ruler and determine the size. Create an identical element. Glue the ends together.

Glue the finished eyes to the top of the head.

Create the paws of the animal. To do this, divide the green stripe into two equal parts. Twist each part of the strip on a tool and place it in the stencil, where the cell number is 14.

Next, you need to take two strips that will be a little shorter in length than the previous ones. We roll them up and make free rolls of size 12.

Fix the edges with glue. Use your fingers to deform one side of each circle and get the droplets.

Glue two large elements in the shape of drops to the body. Then, at the bottom, attach elements in the form of drops of a little smaller size. We obtain ready feet of a frog.

Create a base for the creation of a sea pebble. For this, take the blue strip. Curl up on a quilling tool.

We place the obtained roll in the cell number 16 of the ruler-pencil.

Glue a loose blue roll and pinch it at both ends. Glue to the legs of the frog.

A frog in the quilling technique is ready. Glue it to a solid base and admire, and you can put it on a postcard, envelope for money or a photo frame.

What is it: the technique of quilling, photo examples of basic directions

You’ve probably seen postcards or interior decorations made of twisted strips of different shapes. The technique of creating unique three-dimensional compositions from paper and called quilling, or paper twisting.

There is a European and Asian school of quilling, which differ in their technique. In the first are small elements that serve to decorate frames or cards. Korean paintings resemble a real lace, consisting of many details. It is possible to allocate as a separate type contour papermaking in which rolls are attached to the edge.

How to make simple elements in the quilling technique

Before engaging in a new activity, you need to know what materials and tools are suitable for it, as well as get acquainted with the technique of weaving the basic elements of paper twisting.

What tools and paper are suitable for quilling

First of all you will need strips of paper 3, 5, 7, 10 and 15 mm wide, beginners can cut them themselves. For professional activities in the departments for needlework sell special machines.

The paper is available in different densities and also with additional decorative effects: sequins, metallic, transitional shades. With a standard sheet of A4 can cut a strip length of 30 cm, if desired they are shortened or glued together.

You can buy ready-made paper strips for quilling of different shades

In professional quilling, you will need the following tools.

Little helpers in quilling: tools and implements

Today I want to tell you a little bit about quilling tools that are used as auxiliary ones, and share some practical ideas on how to put together a necessary set of quilling tools with the help of improvised means.

But I will start with the basic tools. We are already quite familiar with it, this is the same tool with a split tip, which is used to twist rolls.

Since I often have to work with children, and buying a lot of professional tools was not possible, I made tools for quilling with my own hands.

This requires a sewing needle with an “ear” length greater than 5 mm (since I most often use 4 mm wide strips of paper). Having cut the tip of the “ear” of the needle on the knife sharpening machine, we make a suitable “slingshot”, for which we only need to find a convenient handle. At first I tried to use plastic cases from ballpoint pens, but no matter how I tried to fix the “slingshot” there, it would scroll. So I stopped at the cork handle.

By the way, for children, such a small handle is very handy.

The second finding, which I would like to share with you, recommending to make the same device, is a device for making identical rolls. In my quilling classes you may have noticed that very often we need to make elements of the same size, and for this we use a ruler with round holes. But (!) If you need very many of these same elements (for example, petals for daisies), I use pill convals ๐Ÿ™‚

Just put a roll in the right size cell in order for him to unravel. Then I take it out and give it the desired shape. And thus it is possible to make absolutely identical elements in great quantity. It’s very simple.

And here are 2 other very useful auxiliary tools for quilling:

Another indispensable helper is a paper grass trimmer, with the help of which you can make bases for cards or pictures, and in general just evenly cut off a part of the paper sheet of the required size. It can also be used to make rounded corners, wavy edges, punching. in general, a very useful tool when working with paper, greatly simplifying many operations.

Trimmers come in many varieties with different functions. I have a universal one, with standard photo paper.

What it costs to get into quilling

and more. The basic kit includes a ruler-pencil, a device for paper twisting, a set of paper. Manufacturers increase the number of paper sets, add glue, tweezers, blanks for cards with envelopes, a board for quilling, instructions with creative ideas. This raises the price, often inexplicably. It is more advantageous to buy the paper and components separately. The advantage of ready-made paper is that it is already cut. The first set we found pleased us with the price of 70 p. Stencil costs 100 p., tool for quilling. 80 p. Total 250 p And that’s without looking for a better price (you can probably find cheaper). However, it is advantageous to buy individually, when all you need is in one store. Otherwise, the savings are spent on travel/delivery.

The “Train” craft in the technique of quilling Published 13.05.2017

Once and for all get rid of buying sets of paper a special machine for cutting. Machine tools come in roller, guillotine, and saber types. Guillotine cutter. a powerful device that cuts 400 sheets at a time. For quilling, you just don’t need one. Roller and saber, designed for 10 sheets of 310-330 mm, quite affordable (from 1000 to 3000 or more). There are also simple grass trimmers that cut up to 5 sheets. Machine for fringe and crimping are needed for really enthusiastic quilling people. For those who just want to try it, a basic set is enough.

For easy attachment of the “roll

Regardless of the material used, quilling elements are fragile and small. So holding them with your fingers while trying not to damage the shape is difficult enough. Tweezers help to solve this problem, with which you can not only firmly press the tip of the paper when gluing rolls, but also connect the “bricks” with each other when creating three-dimensional items.

You can use the most different types of this subject, but the most convenient is considered a tweezers with beveled edges.

What is quilling, the necessary tools and diagrams

Quilling: Paper filigree

Name of quilling, which in Russia is also known as papermaking, comes from the English word “quill” which means “feather of a bird. As a kind of arts and crafts, quilling originated in Europe in the late 14. early 15 centuries. The first samples of works in this technique were miniature medallions created by European nuns who were winding paper strips with gold edges on the tip of pen. When you look closely these handmade decorations made an impression that they are made of strips of real gold.

Alas, paper is a ephemeral material, that is why very few masterpieces of medieval quilling have reached our time in its original form. However, the art itself is alive today. Gaining popularity in many countries, quilling is experiencing its second birth.

In our view, paper. this material is fragile, short-lived. However, works made in the technique of quilling, with special paper completely refutes this viewpoint.

For example, assembled from many smallest details the paper stand will easily withstand the weight of a mug or even a solid-sized book placed on it, and none of the elements will not spoil its appearance and shape. Similarly, the vase for candy will serve perfectly, and will not break. In short, quilling is an opportunity to take a totally new look at paper and its properties.

At the moment paper spinning is incredibly fashionable hobby in Western Europe, especially in England and Germany. However, it has experienced its peak of popularity, when it became known in the East. Ancient traditions in making and tried by many years of experience methods of work with paper gave a new sound to quilling, breathed new life into it.

Confirmation of the fact that today the quilling is a widely known and popular type of arts and crafts, is, for example, the existence in South Korea Association of fans of paper plastic, which brings together lovers and supporters of various kinds of paper crafts.

Works made in the technique of paper twisting, captivate the imagination with its beauty, grace, shape. Quilling deservedly assigned a second name. the paper filigree As the complexity of the process of working in this technique, as, incidentally, and the appearance of finished products, in anything do not concede to the samples of true jewelry art.

Tools needed for quilling

Tools for quilling. It is a metal rod with a transversal slot. You can buy such a tool in a store for needlework or stationery. Price ranges from 100 to 250

It is also possible to make the tool with your own hands.

Take a needle with a large oblong ear and carefully cut it off with wire cutters from the top. The sharp end of the needle can be inserted into the wooden handle of an ordinary paintbrush or any other suitable handle.

Take an orange stick to remove the cuticles, make a cross-cut of about 1 cm depth with a sharp knife.

Basic elements in quilling

Here are the basic elements, once you learn how to twist them, you can easily make any composition. Also in the process of creativity you can try to come up with some of your own element.
