How to open a Bosch s5 battery cover

Tips from the masters on how to service the maintenance free battery

Long gone are the days of simply plugging a battery into a charger and leaving it overnight. a fully discharged 50 amp-hour battery, for example, should be charged at 5 ampere for ten hours. Charging should be accomplished with the caps or plugs removed. Do not charge the battery too quickly either. It can lead to overheating, and even to boiling of the electrolyte.

How many amps does it take to charge a car battery

Attention, this statement is not a guide to action, this is what I use personally, because I myself have recently purchased an unattended battery Bosch silver S4, these measures I do not impose to anyone, and for the reliability and quality of the stated I am not responsible. The following is at your own risk. I ask you to filter all of the information you have here. It is worth noting that old 5 year old batteries should not be charged, or reanimated by any grandfatherly means.

Firstly it is useless or will only give short term effect, secondly it is not safe. It is nearing the end of its life, and it would be wise to take it for recycling. Requirements for the charger. Batteries that do not allow water refilling should only be charged with a device that automatically maintains the charging voltage and preferably has an automatic limitation on the charging current.

open, bosch, battery, cover

A good device will determine the condition of the battery and choose the correct charging current. A great charger on the Internet will cost in the region of kilobels, such as this ctek.

And do not forget to clean the battery of dirt, before you experiment with it. Dirt on the battery will conduct current shunt the charge circuit. which is not good at all.

Also, the battery starts to take more or less charge only after the electrolyte warms up to positive temperature, so when you bring home the battery from freezing let it “stand” or heat up as better to understand.

The difference between maintained and unmaintained is in the availability of plugs for the filling of electrolyte. The developers have made it so that this was not necessary. However, in the maintenance-free one, it is possible to remove the lid and get to the plugs. Except there’s usually no point. It lasts for the life of the battery.

Yes, any battery that is not serviced must have holes in the sides to evacuate gases and to normalize pressure. The point here is the physics of the process. The battery itself takes as much current as it needs to charge. Exactly for the charge. What you are going to put into it in excess by increasing the voltage, it will send mostly for electrolysis of water, which is in the electrolyte, and a little bit more. for warming up.

So it will just decompose the water into oxygen and hydrogen at your expense. Distilled water is not in short supply. But it can not be added to the maintenance free battery. The amount of electrolyte will irreversibly decrease, and its density will also increase irreversibly water is gone, and the acid remains! There is another danger if your battery is heavily discharged.

There is water between the plates and you will just electrolyze it. That’s why in the case of charging the battery with the current of dozens of amperes in a short time the charge will “cover” its surface and will not let the electrolyte penetrate into the depth of the plates. And in the case of charging with a small current. a few amperes. will restore the charge over the entire thickness of the plate. The term “charge” is somewhat formal here. it is the nature of lead sulfate distribution over the thickness of the plate.

How do you charge it? In the case if the battery is deeply discharged, you need to charge it with a small current of 1.5. 2.0 A. If you are sure that the battery has not been deeply discharged connect it to the charger observing polarity see above.

The charger unit should be in the off position. If your device has a voltage regulator, set it to minimum voltage. Switch on the charger. Set the charging voltage to 14,4V. Here we go. The process will end when the current on the terminals at 14.4V falls to mA or 0.2A. It is not possible to overcharge or damage the battery with this voltage. You will simply charge down to the battery’s self-discharge current.

Strictly speaking, when it can, it will “eat” more, but only in certain modes and from the same 14.4V across its terminals. The current helps to assess the process going on in the battery. If it gets higher, then lower the voltage even lower. It is normal for the current to increase in small increments.

It is the acid coming out from the depth of the plates, the lead sulfate gives an influx of acid, the density of the electrolyte increases, the battery is charged. Now more information for the doubters like “why batteries that exclude water topping up should only be charged with devices that automatically maintain charging voltage?

It is possible to fully charge a battery within one hour at a charger voltage of 16.4 V. And it takes longer to fully charge this type of battery than it does to charge a low-maintenance or regular battery. At the beginning of the charging process the current intensity sometimes reaches A, therefore all chargers should be equipped with circuits that limit the charging current to within A. The duration of the charge depends on the level of discharge and can take up to THREE days. Can only be done with some degree of probability, or approximately.

The method of determining the state of charge by voltage is only valid for batteries that have been stationary for at least 8 hours. It should be measured no sooner than 8 hours after the engine has been turned off. Therefore check the charging voltage at least every 2 months.

But it’s better to have a maintenance-free battery in your car at 90 percent or 90 percent charged. Then, if suddenly there’s a power surge in the network, AVR failure or something else it, like a capacitor, has a chance to “consume” this surge.

And without much harm to himself, while saving the electronics, which otherwise starts blowing smoke. If your car’s alternator and voltage regulator are good, you will never have more than 15.1 volts in the network, to such a value allows you to overcharge the voltage of the thermal compensation circuit voltage regulators in cold weather.

So when you take care of the battery, do not forget to periodically check the alternator and voltage regulator. And remember! Your article? Car has been idle for a long time, the voltage on the key fob is 12 volts.

I took it home, put it on charge. Zu set the current of 6 amps. After an hour the current has dropped and the voltage at the zu shows 14.7 volts. Why did the current drop drastically? It should go down gradually? Thank you Very informative article. Nice to read, honestly, the author was thoughtful on the subject.

Note that in winter, leaving the ignition key in the “1” position at night can discharge the battery. There all sorts of relays under load on a modern car can take its energy. Good, warm and keep your eyes open, as they say! I’ve been charging for 7 hours until the cost of buying an automatic charger is not justified, so it’s better to look for WHERE you can use it once.

Why a maintenance free battery may need to be serviced

Maintenance-free batteries have virtually no water evaporation due to the fact that during charging, the boiling electrolyte inside the cans condenses back into liquid through the labyrinth lid.

And if for some reason you break the rules of operation (charge with high currents, use a faulty alternator, etc.) then there will be a lot of vapor accumulated in the tanks, which will be released through the pressure relief valves to avoid the case exploding.

Labyrinth Cover Device

Note! The only reason service may be required is due to evaporation of liquid from the cans. If so, any battery can be made serviceable.

Modern batteries can be used for over 5 years with virtually no decrease in performance, but cheap maintenance-free models are not always able to serve even half of this period. To prolong the period of effective use of such batteries many car owners make attempts to make the product serviceable.

Experienced motorists, knowing in advance that the cheap serviced batteries will not last long, immediately after the purchase make holes in the body to monitor the electrolyte level and its density. For many car owners it’s just a matter of habit.

How to determine if the battery is maintenance free

Determining whether a battery is a maintenance-free product is quite simple. On visual inspection, this fact is indicated by the absence of caps with a cross-hole for a screwdriver. Some models may be serviceable, but the holes in such batteries are connected in the cover to remove gas at the same time for all the cans.

Such a product can be easily identified by the hole in the side, which allows communication of the internal space of the jars with the atmosphere.

Warning! Sometimes battery manufacturers, such as Beast, will put a large sticker on the top cover, so tear off any stickers before drilling the holes.

If the battery is purchased remotely and it is not possible to see the case in detail, you should carefully read the information provided by the seller.

The product description does not always indicate the type of battery, but if it is known that calcium technology was used in the manufacture of the battery, then all passenger car batteries will definitely have a maintenance-free housing.

Hand Repair. How to Repair a Battery Properly

Once you get to the electrolyte, you need to check the three parameters:

open, bosch, battery, cover
  • Color:. Make sure the electrolyte is clear and free of debris. Destroying lead plates give the liquid a dark color.
  • Level. As the water evaporates, the electrolyte level drops, which reduces the capacity. Each battery has a different liquid level, but all batteries must have their plates submerged in electrolyte.
  • Density. It is checked with the special device. hydrometer. The density of the electrolyte in a charged battery is 1.27.

Important! Wear personal protective equipment when handling electrolyte! Wear safety glasses, gloves, and respirator. Spray of electrolyte in the eyes or on the skin will cause chemical burns.

The procedure for diagnosing a maintenance-free battery is as follows:

  • Checking the voltage of the battery and car onboard network. This is necessary to avoid chronic undercharging of the battery. With short frequent trips the battery has no time to charge, with the drop in temperature capacity falls by 20-40%. Many owners blame quite working technique, although it should be properly operated.
  • Charging the battery. It is desirable to use the factory charger, preferably with a controller. The use of electronics will increase the accuracy of the charge. If it is a simple battery charger, set the current to about 0.1 of the capacity. The 60 Ah battery should be charged with a current of 5. 6 Amperes. the charge lasts. until the reading on the ammeter will go down to 2-3 amps. A seriously discharged battery should be charged with a current of 1-2 amperes (about 1/20 of the capacity) for a few days. The voltage should not exceed 15 volts, or the banks will “boil” and may bloat.
  • Drill holes in the battery cover. Checking the electrolyte level with an improvised dipstick. If the battery case is made of light plastic, it is possible to check the level by shining a flashlight through the battery.
  • Check the density with areometer.
  • After checking and refilling, the battery must be closed tightly.

This is interesting: Using solar panels for heating your home

How to correct the condition of the electrolyte

There are three options for correcting the density of the electrolyte:

  • When the level is normal, the density is low. Take out all the content of the jar with areometer and pour it into a glass container. Add concentrated acid, bring the density to the recommended level. Pour electrolyte into the tank up to the level.
  • When the electrolyte level is low, the density is high. Add distilled water by stirring the electrolyte with a glass rod. After work we measure the density.
  • If the level is normal, the density is high. Drain and add distilled water and fill up to the level.

Important! The electrolyte density is its main characteristic. All battery performance depends on maintaining this value.

When servicing the battery, all of the electrolyte can be poured into a glass or enamel container, stirred, and the density checked. Pour normal electrolyte back into cans, if it is not enough top up with fresh electrolyte of proper density. Topping up should be done evenly in all jars so that the amount of fresh sulfuric acid is equal in all jars.

Operation after maintenance

A maintenance free battery loses its airtightness after opening. It is better not to use if the construction is overturned or stands in the passenger compartment.

Any tampering with the labyrinth lid will result in loss of trapping and condensation of distilled water vapors. Repairs turn a maintenance-free battery into a serviceable battery. You’ll need to look inside the battery more often.

Complete the maintenance of the battery must be charged. It is discharged by connecting a few consumers and then recharged. With low currents. After two or three charging cycles it is desirable to check the battery with a loading fork. If the battery has rapidly lost capacity, the decision must be made to replace it.

Rocket battery

The Rocket battery is widely known for its reliability and high quality. Models of this type are installed by the manufacturer on Hyundai line of cars.

Can the cover be removed from the Rocket battery for maintenance? When you use the battery for a long time, its characteristics may deteriorate over time, but do not rush to the store for a new battery. Just service the old Rocket battery and it will last for years.

You may need distilled water, a charger, an areometer, an awl or drill, and a “minus” screwdriver to do the work, since the Rocket battery is maintenance free.

On this type of battery on the technological holes for the electrolyte refill is welded a cover. The cover also conceals the hydrogen venting holes created during charging. It is the filling holes that are of interest for service. To add the bath fluid, a hole is drilled in the housing above each of the cans. After topping up the fluid they are sealed with a good hot melt glue. After sealing the holes the battery is charged.

How to charge a Varta Blue Dynamic D59

If the car is idle for a long time, or if some electrical appliance in the car is not turned off, there is a possibility of a complete discharge of the car battery. In these cases it is important to use the original manufacturer’s charging instructions.

In order to properly charge the Varta Blue Dynamic d59 it is necessary to observe the following recommendations:

  • Before using a battery charger, you should study its specifications and technical specification to make sure it is compatible with the battery;
  • It is highly discouraged to use a battery charger that does not have an auto-disconnect function;
  • Battery manufacturer recommends the use of a battery charger with voltage control capabilities. It is better to give preference to devices with the charging mode IUoU;
  • Charging must not allow the electrolyte to stratify (not required for AGM)
  • Chargers with voltage and current control must be used. In addition, such charger should have a high charging voltage of 2.6V per cell;
  • Recharging the battery must be done fairly quickly in order to prevent the possibility of water loss;
  • After charging is complete, the open-circuit voltage value must be between 2.12 and 2.13 V per cell;
  • The battery should be allowed to charge for one hour before reaching 12V-12.8V for every 0.1V;
  • It is strictly forbidden to charge frozen accumulators as well as those which are heated over 45 degrees;
  • To charge the battery connect the charger plus to the battery plus and charger minus to the battery minus;
  • Only after the battery is fully connected may the charger be turned on;
  • Once charging is complete, the charger must be disconnected;
  • If electrolyte begins to leak from the battery or it gets very hot, the battery charger should be immediately disconnected;
  • The room where you will be charging the battery should be well ventilated.

Important moments

After removing the battery must pay attention to the condition of the wire terminals and the unit itself. It is not uncommon for these parts to oxidize and develop a white deposit. in case of such a defect it is enough to treat the surface of the battery with emery paper. Also the seating of the device should be inspected.

If there is any technical residue, you should use a scraper or brush to remove it.

At any stage of disassembly, it is important to be aware of safety regulations. Never smoke near the battery, light a match or lighter and never come into contact with an open flame. Such exposure can cause damage to the unit, and in the worst case, ignite the vapors from the leaked acid.

If the battery cover has the serial number, model name, and other technical information on it, it is a good idea to take a picture or write this information down on a piece of paper. The point is that this data can significantly simplify the purchase of a new battery.

About Company

Robert Bosch, an entrepreneur and talented engineer from Stuttgart, decided to found his own company in 1886. Robert Bosch has been manufacturing car batteries since 1927. The production of other automobile components, in particular, ignition systems, was also established at that time.

Since then, one of the main directions of the company’s activity was the production of spare parts, consumables and accessories for cars.

open, bosch, battery, cover

By working closely with leading automakers, of which there are many in Germany itself, the company has managed to become one of the leaders in manufacturing car batteries, distinguished by German quality, high starting current and capacity, and, of course, reliability and durability.

Today the Bosch concern has about 300 subsidiaries and more than 13000 branches that provide service for products under this brand. Bosch batteries are used by many car manufacturers for the initial equipment of their cars.

  • The unique composition of the plates provides the highest conductivity;
  • The innovative design of the housing, which ensures its tightness;
  • Equipping the cover with a labyrinth system that minimizes electrolyte loss;
  • Improved electrode structure, which allowed increasing starter current by 120%;
  • minimum self-discharge;
  • Increased service life;
  • ability to provide reliable starting in a wide temperature range.

Bosch battery range

Since we are interested in batteries for cars, our brief review presents only these lines. There are practically no collapsible serviceable battery models among them.

Bosch S3

This series is designed for cars with minimum power consumption. If we talk about new cars, they are mostly small cars. These batteries are also suitable for used cars, manufactured quite a long time ago.

Despite the affordable price, Bosch S3 batteries have good quality and reliability. For pragmatic motorists this battery will be the ideal choice.

Bosch S4 Silver

the most universal series of car batteries from Bosch guarantees stable power supply to the onboard network and reliable engine starting regardless of the outside temperature. This line includes models that can be installed on most makes and models of passenger car fleet planets. All of them are characterized by excellent performance and an unbeatable combination of cost and quality.

The S4 Silver models are recommended for European and Asian (produced in accordance with the JIS standard) medium-duty vehicle assembly, i.e. with the average power consumption level.

The company’s engineers also managed to increase the service life of S5 Silver Plus car batteries by 30%.

Russian consumers should take note: the manufacturer claims that S5 Silver Plus batteries ensure reliable starting of the power unit at the most extreme temperatures of below zero.

The choice of models is great, you can choose a model for almost any car, but we recommend S5 Silver for cars with a large number of consumers of electricity, as well as vehicles equipped with a powerful diesel engine.

It may also be noted that these batteries are ideally suited for city driving with short distances and long idling periods in traffic.

Bosch S5 EFB

The batteries of this series use the special Enhanced Flooded Battery technology, which is also indicated in the name of the line. Its essence is the use of special envelopes enveloping the plates and having microscopic pores. The diameter of these holes is such that it prevents electrolyte leakage, but does not interfere with current flow. As a result, the active zone is held much better on the plate surface, increasing battery life.

  • higher starting current in comparison with S5 Silver Plus series;
  • Possibility of use in cars, equipped with the Start-Stop system;
  • affordable cost;
  • ability to provide an increased number of charge-discharge cycles.

How long does it take to charge a dead battery??

Maintenance-free battery is good but if you kill it once, then after that it is almost dead (especially in winter).

Dream. Never failed on FORD. I like to charge it once every six months as a precaution.I’ve got one on my kopeck now.

Maintenance free doesn’t mean it’s not rechargeable!

Hello please tell me I have the same battery and charger, a year ago also did this procedure is ok, but there was a different battery.I hooked it up now, but the diode that should be flashing just blinks on and off?or does it start flashing later?the self-diagnosis shows that h.at works.And it doesn’t warm up much either?

I didn’t have anything flashing on this particular charger. one of the bulbs only changes color. To be honest, I charged once, and now I do not really remember.)
