How to properly cut corners ceiling skirting boards

How to cut a baseboard with a marking on the ceiling

Before you cut the outer corner of the ceiling plinth without a plough, you need to decide which method is the most appropriate. The easiest option. to draw a pencil marking on the ceiling.

In the absence of special tools, you can use a simple set of things: a pencil, a stationery knife, tacks and glue for decorative details. A ruler is also needed.

After placing the baguette on the ceiling is made corner mark. In the place where the junction of the two fillets will be formed, put a cross or a large dot. Then, on the floor or on a table on the skirting boards, a cutting line is drawn. If the strips are made of PVC they can easily be cut with a utility knife. Those who have never performed repair work, you may need the help of a master if the room has uneven, convex corners. Before gluing it is recommended to make a control measurement.

How to trim a baseboard at any angle and without gaps. 3 working methods from the practice

Advice on how to cut the baseboard at 45 degrees on the network now more than enough, the only thing is that most of them give people who have never done it. Next, from a practical perspective, I will tell you how to trim baseboards on the corners with their own hands in 3 variants, and you will learn about both traditional methods and folk universal recipes.

The science of how to properly trim ceiling baseboards in the corners is not as difficult as it may seem.

How to get around without a chisel?

For a perfectly even fit two corners at the junction of the ceiling mouldings can be cut blanks, not placing them in the jigsaw, and make a mark directly on the ceiling. To determine and put a marker for the inside corner, the length of the ceiling curtain track measured, starting from that corner. In order to perform the marking of the outer corner, it should be taken into account that towards the room wide eaves will go out exactly the size of its width.

Let’s consider in detail how to saw a skirting board without the use of a jig saw

  • On the right side of the corner, you must press the cornice to the ceiling surface and draw an additional straight line, placing it along the outside of the workpiece.
  • Where the line will cross, this point and draw a straight line from it, leading to the bottom corner of the skirting. This will be the marking on which the baseboard will be sawn at the required angle.
  • The next step, when both corners are cut, they are folded towards each other and check the quality of the resulting joint. If any errors are detected, they are removed, using sandpaper, as well as a file.

How to cut coving corners perfectly

  • After both blanks are a perfect fit, the eaves must be trimmed to the required length and glued to the wall. Do not make the trimming before the perfect fit of the cuts of the corner joints. During installation it is necessary to know that for the decor of the suspended ceilings the ceiling plinth is not fixed to the ceiling, and it is mounted only on the wall.

For the trimming of the skirting board in order to join it in the inner corner of the room, the markings are made as follows:

  • Put the two skirting boards together and if the joint is inaccurate, one side should be trimmed again; when the joint is perfect, the skirting boards can be attached to the wall.

When installing a wooden or polyurethane ceiling moulding, inaccuracies in the joint corrected file. To fit the cuts of the foam or polystyrene parts, you can eliminate defects with a sharp knife. This method of trimming ceiling eaves is useful in those homes where the outer or inner corner is not aligned exactly under 90 °, but has a size, for example, 87 ° or 94 °. The use of a wire cutter in this case will be ineffective.

Paintable

After the skirting board is glued, it can be painted in any color with water-based paint. If it is necessary to protect the walls or ceiling, they first glued painter’s tape.

The video will show how to paint a skirting board made of foam plastic.

To paint the foam skirting board most often purchase these types of paints:

properly, corners, ceiling, skirting
  • acrylic;
  • latex paints;
  • Polyvinyl acetate.

WARNING! When buying, carefully study the label with the composition. Do not use solvent-based paints on the foam. Warning

Using tacks

It is possible not to make the ties yourself, and immediately buy those that are originally prepared for the joint. This is how polystyrene foam strips are produced, which do not need to fit together.

Baguette, which will be fixed on the left, must have the right cut, the right baguette left. When making the inner corner, make sure that the lower section is elevated above the upper section, for the outer corner it should be the other way around.

Apply the baguettes to each other, if necessary, make undercuts in the joints of the base. If everything is in order, the skirting boards can be fixed with glue or screwed to the walls with further sealing of the joints.

How to get the right angle

Most of the problems when working with ceiling skirting boards arise in the design of the corners. Since the surface of the products is complex, just cut at the right angle does not work: you need more trim so that they are docked, and preferably without large gaps. In fact, there are several ways to make the corner of the ceiling plinth ideal (or almost).

With the use of a wire cutter

If the corners and walls in the room are flat, you can use a special joiner’s tool plier. This is a groove in the shape of an inverted letter U, in which the mowing line for the cut at an angle of 90 ° and 45 °. The part in which you want to make a cut is placed inside, a saw is inserted into the guides. The part is held in place, cut at the required angle.

This is what the jig looks like. It can be plastic, wood or metal

In the case of the skirting boards, it is not so simple: they must fit two surfaces at the same time, so they must be pressed to one or the other side of the chair. When working with the ceiling, they are nailed on the side closest to you.

Sequence of operations when finishing an outside corner you need to make a saw cut at an angle of 45 degrees. Place the chair in front of you. Trying on how the baseboard will be positioned, determining which part of it will be fastened to the ceiling. To avoid confusion and cut the ceiling plinth correctly, the plank that will be located on the right, you put the one on the left left.

How to cut a corner on the ceiling plinth: Properly set it in the jigsaw

Press the part on the ceiling against the bottom of the cutter. The second side is closer to you and elevated. It rests on the wall of the device, so it does not wobble when sawing. That is, the front part of the skirting board is turned away from you. Make the cutting direction as shown in the photo below. Putting two cut parts together you get an outside or outside corner.

How to make the outside corner of the ceiling plinth using a chair

Sawed off parts first put in place in the dry, without applying glue. If the geometry of the angle is not ideal, you can make minor adjustments with a knife. Small errors are easier to smear with a special putty.

With the inner corner of the ceiling plinth the situation is very similar. First, try on, which side will be on the ceiling, this part pressed to the bottom of the chair, the second part rests on the wall closest to you and make cuts, as shown in the photo below.

How to do the inside corner of the ceiling plinth using the chair

And again, first try on without applying glue, if necessary, slightly adjust. Then apply a thin strip of glue to both surfaces, which will be glued to the wall or ceiling.

Your own version of how to properly use a jigsaw, shown in the video.

How to do the corner of the ceiling plinth without a plank

Few apartments or houses have 90° corners. Small deviations can easily be corrected after trying it on. But not always. Then you have to mark everything in place under the ceiling.

You will need a thinly outlined pencil (hard it is not as visible on the ceiling, but close enough to leave clear marks), a small piece of baseboard, a ruler and a good office knife if you work with polyurethane (polystyrene) baguettes or a saw on metal to work with other materials.

Place the skirting board on the corner, tracing along the outside edge with a pencil. Apply to the other side of the corner, also mark. You have a cross on the ceiling, the center of which marks the place where the ceiling plinth strips must converge (see photo). Having established in a corner of a piece of a plinth which there will be glued and having set its end against a wall, transfer a mark on it.

How to do the corners on the ceiling plinths without using special devices

Now you take a ruler and connect the edge of the skirting with the mark you made. If you simply put the skirting board on the table and cut it with a scythe line, the two parts will not fit together in the corner anyway: the inner part will be in the way. It can be trimmed later, trying it on the ceiling. The second way to set the piece to be trimmed on the table, the part that will be on the ceiling. And cut along the mowing line, but keeping the knife at an angle of about 45°. Correction will still be necessary, but much less (and less chance of error).

Repeat the same operation with the second plank. You put it to the desired wall, rest the end in the adjacent wall, mark the place where the cross is drawn, conduct a fishing line and then cut off. Adjustment Carried out dry without applying glue.

Exactly the same action you repeat for the outer (protruding) corner. Now you know another way to make the corner of the ceiling plinth, and without strings or other special devices.

With the help of decorative corners

There is another, simplest way. For baseboards made of polyurethane or polystyrene, use prefabricated, factory decorative corners. They are installed in the corner, and the strips are glued closely to them. Trim them if necessary is very simple: a few millimeters with an ordinary office knife.

Examples of ready-made corners for baseboards

Tools used

First about how to cut a polymer or wooden ceiling plinth, how to do it correctly and quickly. In this case, 2 tools will be needed for the work. a wire cutter and a cutting tool.

How to cut skirting boards?

As for the latter, the choice depends on the baseboard material:

  • Styrofoam products (all polystyrene) suggest the use of a sharp office knife;
  • Polyurethane skirting boards are usually cut with a metal hacksaw;
  • Wood requires “active” participation of the jigsaw or saw.

The second potential tool for polyurethane is the same office knife. The reason is the rather low density of the material. Another alternative. a sharpened kitchen knife. The special requirement for it is a blade that is not too thick.

A metal hacksaw is a possible substitute for a wood jigsaw. The blade with the smallest teeth is optimal. Otherwise, the tool will get stuck in the material, and in such conditions it is extremely difficult to make a flawless cut.

The chisel and its self-made

The chisel is the second obligatory tool for work with baseboards.

What is it?

Not everyone may know what it is. This is a device that allows you to cut any workpieces at different angles (45-90°). It is a chute consisting of a bottom and two sides in which slots are made for tools. On the bottom of it lay the material, and in the slots are inserted a hacksaw (knife, etc. д.). After sawing the baguettes with it, you get almost perfect blanks.

Chisel. a necessity for trimming any skirting boards, because the joints of the elements require an angle of 45 °. Otherwise, the connection of the parts will not work: either between the adjacent skirting boards will remain a gap, or they will simply need to be trimmed again, because it will be impossible to dock the adjacent products.

Yes, the remaining hole can be masked with some kind of compound. However, this option is still not the best. The filler may soon change color slightly, and this discrepancy will become very noticeable. However, even here there is an exception.

How to Make a Chisel?

For self-made will need to find a board length of about a meter or more, or a sheet of plywood (chipboard). It is still necessary to prepare:

  • From the selected material cut 3 parts in width of 200 to 250 mm, their length. 300 mm (400, 500 mm). Use self-tapping screws to connect them in a “U” shape.
  • Using a protractor, on the tops of the sides make marks corresponding to the angle of 45° (if necessary, and 90°).
  • Then take a hacksaw, which sawed holes so that the grooves reached the bottom of the tool.

Finished holes are bored rasp, so that they could freely enter a jigsaw or hacksaw.

How to make the outside corner of the ceiling plinth in different ways

How to make the outside corner of the ceiling plinth one of the most common questions. Finishing the ceilings often ends with the installation of decorative skirting around the perimeter of the room. It reliably masks the joints between the ceiling surface and the walls, helps to hide small defects formed during the work. At first glance, the installation of this ceiling plinth is not difficult. But often in independent work there is a question of how to make the outer corner of the ceiling plinth and make high-quality docking of internal corners, so that they turned out flat and neat.

Skirting boards on the ceiling: how to cut corners?

Any repair work always ends with a finish. In rare cases, the interior of the room can do without a ceiling plinth, its presence helps to hide the joints used for wall and ceiling finishing materials, in addition, we should not forget about the decorative function that carries this element. It is not difficult to decorate the perimeter of the room, just fixing it in a straight line. It is much more difficult to properly cut it in the corners, without spoiling the material and spending a minimum of time and money.
