How to properly set up a plow on a walk-behind tractor
Setting up the plow before starting plowing
When starting plowing work, it is necessary to correctly adjust and adjust the position of the plow relative to the ground. This procedure is carried out in several stages: before the start of plowing and during the plowing of the first track.
We offer you to watch a video, where it is described in detail how the plow is set up for the Oka walk-behind tractor:
What attachments does the single-axle tractor work with?
Any experienced farmer knows that with the help of a walk-behind tractor, cultivator or other motorized equipment, it is possible to mechanize almost all agricultural work, from cultivating the land to prepare it for sowing and ending with the transportation of the harvested crop. The motor units have become universal due to the possibility of using a variety of attachments. So, for example, for the cultivation of arable land and the cultivation of virgin lands, not only moldboard and other plows were created, but also:
- harrows;
- hillers;
- rotary tillers;
- weeding cutters.
Harrows are used to plow virgin soil, as well as for pre-sowing or post-harvest loosening of arable soil to a depth of 7-14 cm. By harrowing with a walk-behind tractor, a cultivator level the surface, cover moisture, and destroy weeds. The working bodies of such agricultural implements are metal teeth or spherical discs. In this video, you can clearly see how to plow correctly with a walk-behind tractor and a homemade harrow.
With the help of a hiller, potatoes are hilled, cut furrows for sowing seeds, backfilled planting material, as well as weeds directly in the row zone. Hilling devices are single-row and double-row, with a fixed and adjustable working width, distinguishable both by design and by their efficiency. Here is a video about how a single-axle tractor Neva MB2 performs processing with a mounted two-row hiller-weeding machine.
A rotary tiller can plow virgin soil, carry out pre-sowing and main cultivation of plowed land. This agricultural tool allows you to mill, cultivate the land and prepare it for sowing with high quality. It is capable of not only plowing the soil, but also crumbling large layers, mixing with fertilizer, crushing stubble particles, leveling the sown area. Rotary tillers for plowing are of different types, depending on the number of cutting elements. This video shows how to actually plow with a walk-behind tractor with a milling cutter installed on it.
The weeding cutter helps to cut weeds, split and cut grooves without turning the layer, plow and crush the soil. Flat cutters come in all kinds of working widths and depths of processing, which allows you to choose them for specific conditions for processing agricultural plots and crops. This video demonstrates how to carry out processing with a hinged flat cutter in practice on the example of the Dnipro walk-behind tractor.
In addition to the listed removable tools, created in order to plow virgin soil and cultivate arable land, rakes, wood splitters, seeders, shredders, cultivators, rotary and segment mowers, shovels, dumps, sprayers, sweeping brushes, snow blowers, etc. are used with the motor unit. Having in stock the main set of mounted agricultural implements, you can use a walk-behind tractor or a powerful cultivator to perform all sorts of economic tasks, in particular, pre-sowing plowing, sowing and planting crops, fertilizing, inter-row cultivation, harvesting root crops, seasonal harvesting of green fodder.
How to make adjustments and adjustments?
Before installation, remove the wheels from the walk-behind tractor and install the lugs on the axle. Then put on the hitch if the plow is not equipped with one. Installation requires only a wrench, plow, hitch and a single axle tractor. The stand is aligned with the holes for fastening, connected with bolts, nuts, using a wrench.
Tip: To make the installation of the plow easier, place the single-axle tractor on stands, which can be bricks, boards or stones.
Now you can install the plow on a single-axle tractor and secure with cotter pins.
- the unit is placed on a hill, for example, on stands 15 cm high. So it will be possible to adjust the plowing depth. normally it is from 15 to 18 cm;
- the angle of inclination is regulated by a bolt located on the hitch. The higher the heel of the plow, the deeper the plowing depth will be, and vice versa;
- the distance from the ground to the plow should be 3-5 cm. Further, it is recommended to carry out a test plowing. this is how the depth of the created furrow, the course and smoothness of the movement of the walk-behind tractor with a hitch is checked;
- after passing the first furrow, if necessary, readjustment of the hitch is carried out for the most accurate depth of immersion in the soil and seizure of the soil layer.
How to install and configure (adjust) a plow for a walk-behind tractor: educational program
The editors are grateful to the “Mobile K” company for help in preparing the article
One of the most common tasks that are solved with a walk-behind tractor and a cultivator is plowing the soil. The plow can be purchased for almost any model from those on the Russian market. In theory, everything seems elementary. grab it and go. But in reality it is not so easy. it is not enough just to attach the plow, it also needs to be properly adjusted. Our tips will help you with this.
Coupling “hitch-single-axle tractor”
Let’s start with the connection farthest from the plow itself. the hitch and the walk-behind tractor. The hitch must be secured with one pivot, and it must maintain horizontal play within 5-6 degrees. If we fix the hitch with two pins or remove the play completely, we get a rigid connection. this is one of the most common mistakes.
When the recessed plow moves forward, it is affected by a resistance force from the soil. Under the influence of this force, the plow tends to deviate to the side. If the hitch has no backlash, then not only the plow with the hitch will deflect, but the whole single-axle tractor as well. That is, the worker will have to constantly apply force to the handles to compensate for this pressure. If backlash is possible, then only the coupling with the plow is deflected, and the pressure on the plow compensates for the pressure from the unplowed soil on the side of the field board. Simply put, when the hitch is loose, it is much easier to work. And if you believe that the rigid connection of the hitch and the walk-behind tractor will provide you with the straightness of the furrow, then you are very mistaken.
An example of incorrect installation of the hitch. on two pivots
And the correct option is for one kingpin while maintaining the possibility of backlash at a small angle
The screw in the foreground is used to adjust the maximum swing angle of the hitch. There is a similar one on the other side of the kingpin
There can be many options. The photo shows one of them. With this plow you will have a hard time. it is basically impossible to adjust it, because one of the main parts. the field board. is not made correctly. Normally, it looks like a corner: it has not only a lower supporting surface that slides on the ground, but also a side one. It is the presence of a lateral surface that helps to compensate for the pressure from the plowed soil. when the hitch is deflected towards the side, the plow rests against the edge of the furrow. And here there is practically nothing to resist. the manufacturer of this plow was clearly not aware of all the nuances.
What does the “wrong” plow look like??
Wrong plow. there is a field board, but its vertical part is still missing. With this plow, you will have to constantly keep the single-axle tractor from turning, as if the hitch were installed on two pivots.
A properly made plow in operation. Soil pressure on the share (1), leading the plow to the side, is compensated by the vertical flange of the field board (2)
Setting the plowing depth
The next step is to set the desired plowing depth. This is done by repositioning the plow shank in relation to the lock. To do this, there must be several holes in the rack, fixing is carried out using a bolted connection. If there is only one hole, then an obvious conclusion can be made. at least adjustment of the plowing depth is not provided here.
The depth itself should not be very large. 5–7 cm. In this case, when the seam is turned over, the effect is obtained, like plowing on a shovel’s bayonet. Do not go deeper. firstly, you can mix clay or sand with a fertile layer, and secondly, with a great depth of plowing, the roots will turn out to be, although upside down, but reliably covered with a thick layer of soil from above and will winter safely. But we need them to freeze out, otherwise, in the spring, weeds are guaranteed to grow rapidly.
A row of holes in the plow shank is needed to adjust the plowing depth

Adjusting the level of the plowing plane
The angle between the “tip” of the plow and the soil surface, that is, the angle of attack, can be changed either by means of an adjusting screw or by rearranging the bolted connections. The screw, of course, is more convenient, because it is much faster, and the adjustment is carried out smoothly, and not in steps. The scheme of actions when setting the correct angle looks like this:
- place a single-axle tractor with an attached plow on a flat surface;
- unscrew the adjustment screw so that the plow touches the soil with the entire lower surface;
- unscrew the screw in the opposite direction so that the rear of the plow is raised above the ground by about 2.5 cm.
If the angle of attack is too large, then the uniaxial tractor will slip. the plow in this case does not plow, but serves as an anchor. Too small an angle of attack. this is a shallow plowing depth. as if a single-axle tractor runs forward without effort, plows too easily.
Those who have at least a little experience in arable work do not have to explain such subtleties, they are understandable at an intuitive level. But at first, many people make mistakes.
Second and subsequent furrows
Try to make the first furrow as straight as possible. For this, a reference point at the end of the run (at the headland) may be helpful. Next, a single-axle tractor is placed with one wheel in the furrow, and it turns out to be in a tilted position. The plow also leans accordingly, but this is not necessary. To compensate for this inclination, the hitch can be swiveled through a small angle. In fact, this is a tilt of the plow so that on a tilted walk-behind tractor it is in a vertical position.
The plow has already been tilted to a small angle. the second and subsequent furrows can be driven
Description
Working with a plow on an OKA walk-behind tractor. what is plowing for and how the attachment is adjusted. The answers to these and other questions are detailed in this article.
Plow selection criteria
- the rack should not be narrow and thin;
- shortening of the blade is strictly not allowed;
- the body must be made of high quality steel of sufficient thickness;
- the presence of instructions for use is required.
Consider the size of the plow itself. For light motoblocks, equipment with a small working width up to 15 cm is used, for medium and heavy models, respectively, large sizes.
How to choose a plow
Depending on the work carried out on the cultivation of the land, it is necessary to select attachments. This rule also applies to the plow. Three modifications of the plow are most commonly used for plowing.
- Negotiable. Its design allows you to adjust the plowing depth. This plow, when working, forms a furrow and turns the cut soil layer to the side, which is the easiest way. Improving the upper part of the share, you can achieve better soil cultivation. To do this, in the upper part of the unit, the share is bent to the left with a slight slope. During operation, the cut soil layer slides along this bend and flips 180 degrees, thereby improving processing.
- Rotary. Used for more detailed land cultivation. By design, it has several blades, which allows you to increase the plowing depth. This plow not only plows the ground, but also crushes the cut soil layer. This allows it to be used for hilling and in the manufacture of furrows for planting crops. The design flaw is that the tool can only be used on soft to medium ground. On solid soil, it will be necessary to first carry out processing with a reversible plow, then use a rotary plow, which increases physical costs and processing time. Also, the price of this design is the highest in comparison with others.
- Zykov’s plow. It is a modified modified reversible plow. The design of the plow has proven itself well when working hard soil. Thanks to the large number of settings, the equipment can be optimally prepared for work, taking into account all soil parameters and operating conditions. Adjusting the angle of inclination or, as the people call it “the angle of attack”, allows you to use this unit for processing any soil. To do this, you need to increase the angle of attack for processing hard soil or decrease it for softer types of soil.
Installation
To reduce physical activity when cultivating the land with a walk-behind tractor, namely when plowing, it is necessary to correctly install and adjust the plow. When setting up the plow on the machine, pay attention to the attachment of the hitch. It should be attached with one central cotter pin to the walk-behind tractor. This fastening provides a small backlash, which will compensate for the load when processing problem areas of the soil. With an increase in the load on the plow, due to the backlash, it will turn slightly to the side, without changing the trajectory of the walk-behind tractor.
If you attach the equipment rigidly with two cotter pins to the walk-behind tractor, then all efforts through the plow will be transmitted to the unit. You will have to apply a lot of physical strength to maintain an even trajectory of movement.
The installation of the plow itself is quite simple and does not take much time. Next, it’s up to the adjustment, which needs to be paid maximum attention.
Plows adapted to the Salute walk-behind tractor
There are a number of rules that will help you not to be mistaken when choosing a quality device. Compliance with them will help reduce costs, prevent damage, and make better use of the capabilities of the machine.
At this stage, it is best to check how deeply the plow goes into the ground. place a ruler or tape measure in the furrow. Adjust the plowing depth if necessary.
Then, with one wheel, a single axle tractor is placed in the furrow and the plow is oriented so that it is perpendicular to the ground, to do this accurately, use a square. If you are uncomfortable doing this in the ground, place the single-axle tractor on a level surface with a support under one wheel that matches the furrow depth. After that, the plow setting is considered complete and you can proceed to the second, third furrow.
How to plow with a walk-behind tractor correctly: plowing the land, working with various attachments
A multifunctional walk-behind tractor can perform a wide range of work in the field, country house and garden. Together with the device, various types of hitch are used, which help to quickly and efficiently cultivate arable land and virgin lands. The most common tillage tool is the share plow. Instructions on how to prepare it for work and properly plow it are described in our article.
How to adjust
In order to start plowing, it is necessary to attach the plow to the walk-behind tractor, because all these parts are disassembled. To connect all this, you need 22×24, 17×19, 17×14 or 22×19 keys. When all the parts are ready, you will need to install the adjusting screw first. To do this, remove it from the hitch. It is this detail that allows you to set up the plow as conveniently as possible and adjust it depending on what kind of manipulations you are going to make. After you have removed the adjusting screw from the hitch, the plow adjustment continues by connecting it to the hitch. You will see that there are several holes on the hitch, which are also on the plow.
In order for the plow adjustment to be of high quality, it will be necessary to connect the hitch holes with the hole in the plow and, as a result, fix it with an adjusting screw.
Turnover tools for walk-behind tractor
Much of the adjustment process depends on what type of instrument you are using. The most common are revolving elements for a walk-behind tractor.
To know how to plow properly, you need to choose the right tool and set it up. There are the following main types:
- negotiable;
- rotary;
- bilateral.
Setup steps
Like any other technique, the walk-behind tractor plow will need to be prepared in advance for the process of plowing the land. First you need to remove one of the transport wheels of the walk-behind tractor. To do this, you remove not only the wheel itself, but also the hub. Next, take a special axis. It necessarily comes complete with a walk-behind tractor in order to secure the soil hooks. This part is carefully fastened in place of the hub with the existing parts. The next stage is connected with the connection of the lug to this axis. In the process of installing it, you need to pay attention to what kind of land is on your site. For example, if it is non-clayey, lightweight, then you will need to have a herringbone grouser in the direction of travel. If the soil is heavy, then you need to set the lug in the other direction.
This is necessary in order to ensure the best possible grip of the wheel to the ground. Once everything is in the right position, the lug can be strengthened. This is done before adjusting the plow. This must be done in the second hole on the axis. In order to carry out this procedure for starting the adjustment of the walk-behind tractor plow, it was convenient, it is necessary in advance to select a block or other device of such a height that will allow you to raise both wheels of the walk-behind tractor. As soon as the manipulations with the first wheel are completed, you can move on to the second, and do the same for it. After that, you can proceed to the next step. how to set up a plow on a walk-behind tractor.
How to properly adjust the plow on a walk-behind tractor
Setting up a plow on a walk-behind tractor is necessary in order to work correctly and efficiently on a personal plot. Many who are faced with the need to plow the territory or with some other processing of it believe that it is enough to just start a motor-cultivator, and it will be possible to carry out all the necessary manipulations quickly and easily. But everything is not so simple, although, of course, there are situations when it is enough just to install a certain technique, for example, a weeding machine, and start cultivating the land. However, in most cases, you will need to know how to properly configure the mechanism.
Results of work
If you are using a completely new tool and a new hitch, then to adjust the plow on the walk-behind tractor, you will need a hammer, with which you can connect these parts conveniently and without causing any inconvenience. For fastening, you will need other tools, such as the wrenches that have already been mentioned. Under these conditions, everything will go very quickly and efficiently. When connecting the hitch, the nut does not need to be tightened tight. you just need to bait it. This is to ensure that the hitch runs freely and does not lock in a particular position too firmly. Next, you need to proceed to the installation of the adjusting screw. It is installed with the first fastener in the hole that remains on the hitch, and with the second in the upper hole on the plow. If the device is adjusted correctly, the plowing will be as efficient as possible.
As in the previous step, the nuts here also do not need to be fastened too tightly. After that, the hitch with the walk-behind tractor is connected, and this mount remains strong enough that it will allow you to plow the ground exactly as far as you have determined for your plow. It remains to connect it to the walk-behind tractor itself. So the plow adjustment is complete.
Adjusting the plow on the walk-behind tractor
To work on different types of soil, the unit must be configured differently. But the main adjustment takes place according to several criteria:
- setting the plowing depth;
- adjustment of the angle of attack;
- cutting the first furrow.
Plowing depth. The further process of growing crops depends on the setting of the plowing depth. If you set up insufficient depth, the roots of harmful plants will remain under the soil, and if the depth is too deep, then the fertile soil will mix, and the plants will not receive the necessary nutrients.
Attack angle. Adjustment takes place using a field board. The performance of the unit depends on the angle of attack: if the angle of attack is greater than necessary, the unit will get stuck in the ground, and the uniaxial tractor will skid; and if the angle of attack is insufficient, the plow will not remove the required layer of soil.
First furrow. After all adjustments have been made, the first furrow must be plowed. At this stage, it becomes clear whether the plow is set up correctly. On the next plowing, the machine is lowered by one wheel into the track, and further adjustment takes place in the furrow.
Attack angle
The angle of attack is adjustable on the frame of the device. Adjust the horizontal position of the frame with a lanyard and lower the machine until the share touches the ground. Then you need to slightly raise the body so that the back of the share is raised above the ground by a few centimeters.
If the angle of attack is too high, the single axle tractor will dig into the ground. If the angle of attack is small, then the unit will not sink to the required depth, but will plow only the top layer of the soil.
Adjustment on heavy walk-behind tractors
Plow adjustment on heavy diesel walk-behind tractors does not differ from adjustment on light class machines. The only thing is that lugs are not installed on heavy machines, because the mass of such equipment exceeds 200 kg. Most importantly, observe safety precautions when connecting the unit and plowing. After all, the more powerful the technique, the more careful you need to be when working.
Preparing the walk-behind tractor for plowing
Land cultivation is a technological process that requires special preparation of motor vehicles and a plow. First, you need to move the car to the field to be processed. If you are using a lightweight uniaxial tractor, then it can be transported in the back of a car. Before starting plowing, you need to carry out daily maintenance of the machine and check its functionality.
For the period of plowing, lugs are installed instead of wheels on motoblocks of light and middle class. They improve traction and increase the overall weight of the vehicle. Before installing the lugs, you need to transport the car to a level area, substitute a stop under the rear hitch and remove the wheels. If on the walk-behind tractor it is possible to replace the hubs with longer ones to increase the track, then replace them. After that, the lugs are installed. Note that the tread pattern on the lugs is pointing to one side. Narrowing of the pattern indicates the direction of travel.
After carrying out maintenance and replacing the wheels with lugs, you can start connecting and adjusting the plow.
Frequent problems and solutions
Remember that plows are structurally different from each other. The general adjustment process is similar, but the elements for which adjustment takes place may differ. Before starting the connection and setup, read the instructions that came with the device.
The same applies to the walk-behind tractor. Specify, based on the instructions, whether it is necessary to change the wheels to lugs, and what diameter they should be. On motoblocks of light and middle class, it is recommended to install weighting agents so that the unit sinks under the weight of the machine. If the plow is set up correctly, and the machine slips anyway, then the unit is too large for the walk-behind tractor of your power. This problem can be solved by installing weighting materials.
When choosing a device, be guided by the power of the walk-behind tractor. The heavier the machine, the more diameter the plow can be installed. On heavy diesel motoblocks, double-body devices are installed, which increase the productivity of the processing of the site.
The design of the plow is simple and straightforward. the main thing is to be attentive to the unit itself and think sensibly when connecting it. Remember that the unit must be looked after in the same way as the walk-behind tractor. Clean your implement after plowing, try not to plow stony soils and service your helper in a timely manner.
Single-body plow mounted SCOUT PL-130
The single-body plow SCOUT PL-130 is connected to a single-point attachment to mini-tractors and walk-behind tractors with a capacity of 10 HP or more. from.
The unit is equipped with an enlarged steel ploughshare, and the design itself is made reliably. you can forget about sharpening the ploughshare. To regulate the plowing depth on uneven terrain, a limiter wheel is installed. The plow is designed for the processing of heavy, loamy soils and virgin lands.
When working with a floating mode of the hydraulic distributor, the device must be weighed.
How to properly adjust and tune the plow on a walk-behind tractor: tips and tricks
Plow tuning is a real art. For more than a thousand years, farmers have begun plowing by adjusting this unit. The task of the plow is to turn the top layer of the earth, mix it and create favorable conditions for plant growth. It is a basic agricultural task that prepares the soil for sowing, making it fertile. Plowing is done once a year, and the subsequent cultivation of the land is called harrowing.
Agricultural machinery is used for plowing: cultivators, walk-behind tractors and tractors. A plow is connected to the equipment, which produces plowing. For work in summer cottages and personal plots, a uniaxial tractor is more often used.
The most important thing when plowing is to set the plow correctly. If the adjustment is incorrect, the equipment will start to slip, sink into the ground, and the biochemical processes that are necessary for plant growth will be disrupted in the soil itself.
