How to properly trim your hockey stick

Table of Contents:

“Pro hockey sticks”. part two. “Length

Hello! We continue to talk about hockey sticks.

When you buy a golf club, one of the main factors in choosing is the length. Experienced players do not have any problems with this, they know perfectly well which length they like best. Despite the fact that the length of the club, for the most part, is a subjective choice of the player, depending on the length of the club, the style of play changes. For example, if you pick a club that is too long, you will not be able to be as effective at dribbling as a player with a short club, and vice versa, if you play with a short club, you will not be able to shoot at goal with the same force as you do. throws defenders (they play with long clubs in 98%). But we will talk about which clubs are suitable for which role later. First, let’s see how to correctly measure and choose the length of the club.

How to measure the length of your club correctly?

In order to correctly choose the length of the club, the player must be on skates. The skates will add a few centimeters in height and the stick, which reached the nose of a player without skates, will barely reach the chin if the player is wearing skates. If you are choosing a golf club and you are not able to put on skates, then do not forget that you will be taller in skates and based on this, choose the length of the club.

To measure your putter, you must be standing straight and looking forward. Keeping the club straight, parallel to your body, with the nose of the hook on the ground / ice (see picture below)

properly, hockey, stick

Average length of a hockey stick (Average). If you are just starting to play hockey, then first choose a stick of exactly this length, the end of the stick will be somewhere between your chin and nose.

How to distinguish a short club from a long one? It’s very simple, as a rule, the club is higher than your nose. called a long club (Long). And the one that is shorter than your chin. short.

How big should your golf club be? As we mentioned earlier, the length of the hockey stick is usually chosen based on personal preference, but it takes time, as well as developing your own style of play. Therefore, we decided to put together a short guide to choosing the size of a golf club. “Dribler”. Short clubs are used by players with a good level of dribbling. And small clubs help them with this. Firstly, they are lighter, secondly, they are more convenient to handle the puck on a small area of ice, covering the puck with your body, and, thirdly, with a short club, it is much easier to make feints around your own body.

Most hockey players with a good level of dribbling do not let the puck go far away from them, thereby covering it when dribbling. If dribbling is your thing, or you are aiming for good club control, then this is your choice. putter.

Medium stick. “Destroyer”. Medium golfers tend to play in the corners of the court, scratching the puck and creating serious threats on the dime. With a club of medium length, mainly universal players play, since the size of the club allows you to show a good level of dribbling, intercept passes and make quite powerful throws from an average distance.

Driver. “Defender”. It is rare to find a defender playing with a medium or even more short club, and if you meet such, then this is the exception rather than the rule. 98% of defenders play with long clubs. A long stick gives more opportunities to destroy attacks: push the puck away from the attacker, intercept the pass, keep the attacker away from the goal. As you know, defenders should have a fairly powerful click and long clubs (with correct throwing technique) give more power when clicking.

Important: The above points are general for club length selection, but are by no means the ultimate truth. Some defenders play with short sticks, while offensively you can find players with a long stick. These tips should help newbies choose their club, but don’t be afraid to try new things. you might be a great short-club defender or a great long-club rribbler.

This concludes the second part of the story about choosing a hockey stick. Read more tomorrow.

Thanks for attention.

If you have any questions about the choice of hockey equipment, leave them in the comments or send them to us on. We will try to answer all your questions in the next issues.

Determining the rigidity and grip of the hockey stick

The stiffness of the club is an important parameter that directly affects the ease of use of the instrument and the overall performance of the game. Every seasoned hockey player knows that in order to shoot the puck accurately and powerfully, the stick needs to be deflected appropriately. And the heavier the hockey player, the more powerful the deflection created by him. It is for this reason that the stiffness of the stick is matched to the weight of the hockey player: the greater his weight, the more rigid this or that stick should be. Otherwise, the soft stick will become unusable after 2-3 full matches.

To assess hardness, a special scale called Eastcon is used, and its values vary between marks 40 and 120. There are also markings on the stick: the softest model is indicated by the abbreviation Whip, the most rigid. XX Stiff.

The grip of a particular club is equally important. The choice of a club for this parameter depends entirely on whether a person is right-handed or left-handed. There are also universal clubs that do not have a bend. such models are suitable for both right-handers and left-handers. They are recommended to buy, first of all, for young hockey players, who often do not know what grip they will have during the game.

What are the hooks in hockey sticks

Despite the seeming simplicity and primitiveness of this element of the hockey stick, many requirements are imposed on its features:

  • Depending on the position of the player in the arena, the shape of the toe of the club is selected. For example, a round toe is ideal for strikers who need constant contact with the puck and high maneuverability. Square, on the other hand, is ideal for defenders, making it easier to control the puck. Midfielders can be provided with a compromise option. a square toe with rounded corners;
  • The place where the hook starts. The farther from the toe it starts, the more active the game is for this or that club. The option is considered universal in which the bend starts from the middle of the sock;
  • The angle between the club handle and the plane of the hook. This parameter is individual and depends entirely on the player’s height, build and weight. Typically, this parameter ranges from 4.4 to 6 degrees;

How to choose a hockey stick for training

Hockey is one of those sports that makes quite serious demands on the equipment used. Dynamic and gambling, and at the same time very traumatic. such a game is hockey for many of us. Therefore, in order to get maximum pleasure and improve as a hockey player, the correct selection of hockey equipment in general and the hockey stick in particular must be given the utmost attention.

Choosing a hockey stick depending on the age and weight of the hockey player

This formulation in hockey circles is the most real axiom that does not require proof. The selection of a stick is not difficult to carry out: all that a hockey player needs is to pay attention to the inscriptions indicated on it:

  • The youth marking (abbreviated as yth) indicates that the stick is for children, and the optimal age for a hockey player with its help is from 4 to 7 years;
  • Junior (JR) is for older players. As a rule, we are talking about adolescents from 7 to 14-15 years old;
  • Intermediate (Int) is an excellent choice for older adolescents who are between 15 and 18 years old;
  • If the club is chosen for an adult, an adult, models with the Senior (Sr) marking should be purchased;

Types of hockey sticks and what material they are made of

Regardless of what age group this or that club is designed for, they all consist of two main parts. the handle and the hook. Depending on the design, hockey sticks are divided into two main groups:

  • One-piece hockey sticks. Made from one single piece of material and have an inseparable structure. The characteristics of such models are at the highest level, however, in the event of a breakdown, such a stick will hardly be repaired;
  • Collapsible golf clubs. They consist of two separate elements connected with a special hot melt adhesive. Damage during the game in this situation is fixable. the elements are disconnected, and the damaged one is replaced with a new one.

Hockey sticks differ in the type of material used. The first models were made of wood or aluminum, but their performance was far from perfect. Currently on sale you can find golf clubs made of the following materials:

  • Multi-layer plywood. The most budgetary and least durable material;
  • Solid wood mass. The durability of such clubs is much higher, as well as the price;
  • Polymer materials. fiberglass, carbon fiber, carbon. They differ in the maximum possible strength and wear resistance, however, they are quite laborious to manufacture, and therefore have the highest price. On top of that, these clubs are quite laborious to repair;
  • Aluminum. Their inherent advantage is the highest possible strength. Among the shortcomings, one can single out low sensitivity and regular loss of control over the puck during the game;
  • Titanium and Kevlar. The lightest, most flexible and durable materials. Hockey sticks made of these metals are the lot of professional hockey players. They have, perhaps, one drawback. exorbitant cost;

In order to eliminate the disadvantages of a particular type of material, a modular design is widely used, which implies the use of several types of materials. For example, the combination of a wooden handle and a carbon or titanium hook provides an affordable price and excellent performance;

How to choose the length of your hockey stick

The length of a hockey stick is another highly individual parameter, selected depending on the physical characteristics of a particular hockey player. Choosing the length is easy. you need to stand on a flat surface and place the club next to you. Ideally, its length should reach to the tip of the nose (or to the chin if you are on skates). For playing in attack, you can choose a slightly shorter stick, for a defender, accordingly, models are more suitable.

Not basic, but also important parameters

Stick length

There are different opinions regarding the choice of the optimal club length for height. in particular, trainers and school representatives from different countries have their own preferences. An average and probably most common practice is to choose the length of the club from nose to chin. Defenders usually use slightly longer sticks, while attacking players, on the contrary, are slightly shorter. It also depends on how close the player prefers to control and dribble the puck.

Hook bend

Distinguish trivida. bend of the heel, end and middle of the hook.

  • Heel. Commonly used by players who prefer high throws.
  • The toe. the choice of most hockey players. allows for better puck control, but upward throws are more difficult.
  • And the kink in the middle of the hook (mid) is the middle value, which is a trade-off.

The main parameters of a hockey stick

This parameter means which hand is on the bottom of the stick, and which is on top, and in which direction the hook of the hockey stick will be bent. The grip is right and left. With the left hand, the left hand is from below, and the hook is bent to the right, for the right hand, the opposite is true.

If you do not yet know which option you need and there is no way to practice directly on the hockey stick, you can determine the grip using available tools, such as a mop or any other similar object. Take it in your hands, as you would hold the club, make a couple of movements imitating the throw of the puck, left hand from below. left grip and vice versa.

Perhaps one of the most important technical characteristics is stiffness or flex. With a wrist throw, it is necessary to deflect the club so that, straightening in the final part of the throw, it accelerates the puck, as if shooting it.
Therefore, a properly selected stiffness parameter allows the player to perform throws as efficiently as possible.

The harder the stick, the more effort must be made to throw, therefore the rigidity is chosen based on the weight and, to a greater extent, the strength of the player.
So, adult players of light weight (up to 75kg) often choose Intermedia clubs (Int. this parameter will be discussed later) with flex = 60-70, which makes it possible to effectively use the stiffness of the club. Players with a higher preference for clicks opt for harder clubs.

Hook shape (toe)

The shape can be square, round and square with rounded corners. Round toe provides more stick-to-ice contact for better puck control.
The square toe is comfortable to play on the boards, but the puck’s level of control can be compromised. It is believed that the attackers choose the round toe, but the square defenders, the real statistics, are not known to me, and I think that this parameter, like others, should be realized during the game. And if you don’t have experience yet, choose a square shape with rounded corners as a versatile option.

How to choose a hockey stick

Choosing a hockey stick is perhaps the most difficult moment in the selection of all equipment. It is necessary to take into account quite a few parameters, which you will read about below, and most importantly, you can only understand whether this stick really suits you during the game. Therefore, if this choice has come up before you for the first time, we do not recommend that you buy an expensive club right away, start better with a more versatile in terms of parameters in the middle price category, and having already felt what you would like to change, you can switch to a more expensive version with more pronounced necessary characteristics.

How to choose a stick for a young hockey player

For many young players, the hockey stick is the ultimate weapon in their arsenal. The component that gives this sport its uniqueness.

Any child with great enthusiasm picks up a new club, and for good reason. Your club can tell a lot about you as a player. Do you like to shoot? Pass? Or do you outplay your opponent with feints one-on-one? The length and flexibility of your club will vary greatly depending on your approach to play.

However, here I would like to point out that you need to worry about all this much later, the main thing is to choose the right club for your child. Here are the basics when choosing a golf club:

Choose the right specs

A light stick makes it easier to master the puck. I’ve seen a lot of kids on the ice with their father’s cut-off SherWood 5030 sticks. These sticks weigh about a ton and don’t help with technique development at all. The child’s hockey stick should also be flexible enough for the kids to get used to the throwing mechanics.

Pay attention to the ratio of the stiffness of the clubs (flex) and the size of the player:

Height: up to 122 cm | Weight: up to 25 kg

The price shouldn’t be too high (yet)

The price of the last club I bought shocked all my friends who had nothing to do with hockey. I will not name it. “Money, more problems”. as one of Puf Daddy’s songs says. It is good that parents of very young hockey players should not think about clubs with such a price tag yet. It is not necessary to choose too expensive model for a young player.

The stick must be easy to use so that he can learn how to hold it, pass and hit the puck. A stick made of the same material as the spacecraft is unlikely to help your child perfect his throwing technique as a child. It’s sad of course. But do not worry, you will still have the opportunity to spend all your salary on the purchase of a club when he trains in the junior team.

Choose the right length

Anyone who claims that there are clear rules for determining club length is just kidding. In fact, when it comes to the length of the club. and in general about any hockey equipment. personal preference and ease of use are the main criteria for choosing. This does not mean that your child should start pretending to be the next Zdeno Hara and ask them to cut a sequoia tree to make a club for the next match, but it is very important to understand how the length of the club affects the game.

Remember, the throws will be stronger if the stick is longer, but it is more difficult to land the puck and perform fake moves with such a stick. A shorter stick is easier to handle, but a strong shot is harder to hit.

We recommend that children and parents focus on the midpoint between the child’s nose and upper chest when skating, and this usually helps with the selection. But there is always a kid who is obsessed with a certain model of club. wait a minute, because I was such a kid.

So that is all. Good luck with choosing a new club.!

Each of you young hockey fans can make such a stick for yourself. You will need a little material for this: wood, glue, electrical tape and a leather strap.

Make a ball hockey stick from dry ash, beech or birch wood. Before processing a blank, carefully examine the wood. It should be healthy, straight-grained, free of rot, cracks and other defects. You can also use wood with small, intergrown knots, but in such a way that when cutting the material, they do not go to the edge of the hook or handle. The selected workpiece must correspond in length, width and thickness to this size. 1500 X X 100 X 15 mm.

Now it’s time to start processing the board. Usually it is finished with a plane or on a woodworking machine. Bring the blank to the required size (1250 X 70 X 12 mm), and then steam one end of it for one to two hours in hot water (90-100 °). When the wood is well steamed, immediately remove it from the water and start bending the hook. Bend on a wooden or metal block, the working part of which is made in the shape of the curved part of the hook. When the club takes the shape of a dummy, secure it in this position with clamps (metal clamps) and leave to dry completely. Then remove the club, glue the overlays if necessary and finally process it according to the dimensions shown in fig. one.

Use waterproof resin glue to help stick the parts together. If you can’t get it, you can glue the sticks with casein glue. Carefully sand the surface of the club with a sandpaper and cover with hot linseed oil.

Wrap the hook with insulating tape in two layers in the places indicated in fig. 2. A leather strap, 8-10 mm wide and 1.5-2 mm thick, should tightly cover the body of the hook. It must be woven as shown in fig. 2. Secure the end of the strap with a nail in the middle of the inner edge of the hook. A properly made hockey stick should weigh no more than 450 grams.

There are three types of ice hockey stick. for the player, the goalkeeper and the nursery. The stick consists of a handle and a hook, which are cut separately and glued together, as shown in fig. 3. For strong adhesion, the surfaces of the hook wedge and the wedge slot in the handle must be well matched.

The wood and glue used are the same as those used to make hockey sticks. Since the hook is made separately from the handle, there is no need to bend the wood.

The player’s clubs come in four different numbers. They differ in the hook angle. The angle is chosen depending on the place of the player in the team and his individual data (128 °, 130 °, 132 ° and 135 °). The goalkeeper stick can also be positioned at different angles (122 °, 125 ° and 128 °). The children’s club has a hook angle from 130 ° to 140 °.

Final finish for ice hockey sticks. same as for field hockey sticks.

Remember. the durability of the club depends to a large extent on the quality of the gluing of the parts. They need to be tightly pulled together and held in this position throughout the drying process. When using resin glue, strictly follow the gluing technology (temperature, time, etc.).

Hockey rink size

The parameters of the ice arena play an important role in choosing the tactics of the game. The fact how comfortable it is for hockey players to maneuver on the ice also matters in the game. Therefore, according to the standards of the International Ice Hockey Federation, the size of a standard ice hockey rink will be 61 x 37 m maximum, and minimum 56 x 26 m.

The most optimal and correct option for choosing an attribute in skates is when the end of the handle is between the shoulders and the chin. If the purchase is carried out in ordinary shoes, then the location should be between the chin and nose.

How to choose a hockey stick

How to choose a hockey stick, given its length? Beginners are encouraged to buy medium fixtures.

Short clubs. They are usually purchased by those who are skilled at handling the puck. They have low weight and dimensions, which make it possible to operate a sports accessory (puck) with maximum comfort in a confined space.

Medium clubs. A great option for versatile hockey players. They make it possible to show a high level of dribbling, easily move the puck around the playing field, make interceptions and other actions.

How to wrap the hook correctly

Be sure to wrap the hook in order for this device to serve you for a long time. A professional golf club is not cheap, which is why you should take care of it and use it as carefully as possible. It is necessary to pay special attention to the hook of the club. There are several ways to wind this area.

How to wrap the hook correctly

We recommend that you still focus on the method where the winding begins from the cape. over, the stronger and stronger you pull the tape, the better the winding will be. We would also like to recommend that you stick the strip on the edge that constantly interacts with the ice. This will be an additional security measure. Hook wrapping methods are good in their own way.

Why is a hockey stick wrapped around

There is a special method that will allow you to check this. To do this, you need to put the club on opposite you, you can put it on the side. After that, you need to draw a visual line from your nose to the tool. This is exactly the height your club should be. It is also worth understanding how to properly fit the club. You should know that the extra piece needs to be cut down and then sharpened. You can use sandpaper for this. As you already understood, the process is not very complicated. The main thing here is attention and accuracy, only in this case you will succeed. Winding a club at home is not as difficult as it seems at first glance.

Why is a hockey stick wrapped around

Correct wrapping can improve your game dramatically. This is due to the fact that it will become much more convenient for you to play. It is very important. If you are interested in the number of tape layers, then we recommend that you make at least 3 layers. This will be enough. Sometimes even professional players do not know how to wrap a hockey stick correctly. This fact is very common. If you want to be successful in this sport, start small.

Get your tools in order, and then hammering the puck will not be difficult. In sports, discipline is of great importance. So, how exactly is it worth winding. Very much your technique. We recommend that you wind the winding obliquely. In this case, it is necessary to make not very large turns. To make it clearer for you, we note that one turn should not exceed 15 cm. The next step will be to unwind the tape by 50 cm. After that, the piece of tape must be carefully twisted, and then you can repeat the winding in the opposite direction. It is also worth making some distance between the turns. It should be insignificant, about 2 cm.

Stick wrapping technique

Every self-respecting player should know how to wrap a hockey stick. Please note that the thickening should be done precisely in the upper area of the handle. Only then can the winding continue. Do not forget to wrap the stick from top to bottom. When the wrapping is complete, the tape should be carefully cut. As you can see, everything is quite simple. So, you have completed the main stage and now you can move on to the second stage of the process. In order to start using the club, you need to wrap it around the hook. There are several nuances here. First of all, you must define the hook cover.

Stick wrapping technique

If you notice a synthetic overlay, then additional tape will be unnecessary. This must be taken into account. The thing is that covering such a hook with a tape can make the stick heavier, and this will interfere with the game.

How to wrap a golf club correctly

How to wrap a golf club correctly

The main pride of a hockey player is his stick. This is the main tool for driving washers. If you are planning to do this sport, you should pay special attention to this device. Some people do not suspect that the club should be wrapped in two places at once. It is possible, and sometimes even necessary, to wrap a club at home. This will help you make it usable.

Special workshops are engaged in club wrapping. If you have no desire to spend extra money, then you can start winding the club yourself. This is a great way to learn new things. It is worth starting with deciding whether the chosen stick suits you in height.

What not to do when winding

You should also listen to your feelings. Do not allow the club to be too heavy, if this happens, it will be uncomfortable for you to play, and this will not allow you to enjoy the game. Trust your feelings. Excessive club weight can negatively affect your game, do not forget about this. You already know how to wrap the hockey stick that you see in the photo. You should know a few subtleties that will allow you to fully master the fineness of winding. So, the first thing to consider is the winding density.

What not to do when winding

We have already noted that it should be high. It is also very important that the length of the club matches your height. If the stick does not fit you, then it will have to be replaced. Measure accurately before shortening the club. Winding must be carried out evenly. If you do not observe this, then in the near future you will understand that playing with such a club is not very convenient. Today, hockey is considered a very common sport. This is the sport of really real men.

If you want to be successful, start small. Before going out on the ice, it is worth bringing the playing instrument into full compliance. You can’t even imagine how important it is. Don’t neglect the rules. Let your club meet all the standards, only in this case you will be able to show good results.

How to properly tape a hockey stick

Hockey players always devote a lot of time to choosing equipment and taking care of equipment. One of its main elements, unambiguously, is the hockey stick. To extend the life of this thing, it is customary to wrap it tightly with adhesive tape. This process involves several stages.

First, the tape is wound around the club from top to bottom, not reaching the top of about fifteen centimeters. After that, the procedure is repeated in the opposite direction. At the same time, it is very important to press the tape as tightly as possible to the surface. After making sure that the material adheres firmly to the product, you can make a knot. It should form a kind of handle. This unique detail on the top of the handle will improve the grip.

It is imperative to check whether it is convenient to hold the inventory on top. The quality of the game will depend on this. During the game, the hockey player will constantly have to move on the ice surface, and also quickly enough to perform various manipulations with the stick. If the inventory falls, then it will be possible to lift it off the ice only by the handle made of tape. Goalkeepers should use the thickest grip possible. At the same time, field players should choose hockey sticks with a handle twice as thin.

The hook of the club also needs careful winding. Here, the procedure is performed in the same order. The tape must be applied in two layers, pressing very firmly to the surface. Typically, players will wrap the stick almost completely, leaving a small area at the top of the handle. If desired, the player can conduct several experiments, leaving different amounts of material on the hook. It is important that the stick is comfortable to manipulate when passing passes and grabbing the puck.

This can only be verified in real conditions. Therefore, you need to play a match and evaluate how convenient it is to work with a club during the game. Transfers and clicks should be easy. Particular attention should be paid to the level of wear. If, after several transfers, the material is abraded, then it will be appropriate to wind another layer. Many players rewind the entire club, hoping to increase its durability. Others, on the other hand, use tape in small areas, as full processing makes the inventory less flexible. It should be noted that the presence of a tape on the handle significantly improves the grip of the hand with the club.

Why Wrap a Hook

Athletes all over the world use a method of wrapping the hook of a hockey stick with a special tape before playing or training, during the winding of which the puck is controlled: it slips less, and this is visible during the transfer and throw.

There are several factors affecting the need for winding.

The first factor is the protection of the stick from mechanical damage. For wooden ones, the winding protects the glue that holds the wood together. The hook is constantly involved during the game, there is constant friction on the ice, in some cases it can crack or split. Winding protects the hook from friction, skating cuts, puck bumps, and reduces the chance of feather breakage.

The second factor is an increase in the playing qualities of the club. For effective play, it must be flat, without cracks and scratches that are clogged with snow and interfere with the game. By wrapping the hook, its cushioning properties are improved. It will be easier for the hockey player to feel and control the stick during the game.

The third factor is the need for camouflage, not a club against the ice, but rather a washer against the background of a hook wrapped in black tape. This allows you to increase the performance of the game by at least a few percent.

The fourth factor has more to do with the version of the tradition. If a few decades ago, when the clubs were more fragile, the need for this was obvious, then modern ones are made from improved polymer materials that increase their durability.

Stick wrapping material

Hockey stick wrapping has several rules that must be taken into account in order to get the maximum result.

Availability of materials

In order to wrap a hockey stick, you need:

  • sharp knife;
  • scissors;
  • special tape.

Hook Winding Technique

  • Prepare tools and material: scissors or knife, sandpaper, tape, rag, washer.
  • Clean the surface of the club from dirt, remove roughness with sandpaper.
  • Apply a thin strip of tape along the edge of a stick sliding on ice.
  • Select winding direction. For the best bounce of the puck, start at the toe. For better puck rotation. from the heel.
  • Determine the winding option: wind the tape in one layer or with an overlap of 2-3 mmm.
  • Make a spiral winding vertically.
  • Watch the belt tension. This will help prevent wrinkling.
  • Air bubbles are removed by passing the washer along the surface of the hook with pressure from the beginning of winding to the end.
  • Continue wrapping beyond the edge of the hook.
  • Smooth the edge. Remove excess tape with scissors.
  • The toe of the hook can be left open (at the request of the hockey player).
  • Repeat the winding, if necessary, in whole or in part. It depends on the intensity of the game and training.

Grip tapes

A specialized tape is used to wrap the handle to prevent the glove from slipping and ensure a secure grip.

  • Self-adhesive tape made of thin gauze fabric, impregnated with adhesive solution, with the addition of a layer of rubber. The material has a high coefficient of friction and is resistant to wear. When removed, the tape does not leave glue on the stick.
  • Cobweb tape or grip tape. The self-adhesive tape has a porous structure without a sticky layer. Provides good adhesion to the club handle, pleasant to the touch, can be easily torn off by hand, without the use of scissors, no additional glue is required during application, leaves no residue when removed.
  • Silicone grip tape. Has a different structure. Easy to wrap around the club, does not absorb moisture, does not slip. Can be used multiple times. Extends the lifespan of hockey gloves. It is easy to apply the logo, the name of the athlete.
  • Universal tape. Suitable for both handle and hook.
  • Some hockey players prefer tennis racket wraps.

Hockey stick for a child: how to wrap correctly

For a hockey player, a stick is an attribute that demonstrates the peculiarity and personality of the game. Many athletes regard her as the main helper on the ice, which, like any sports equipment, is often subject to breakdowns during the game.

A hard shot, a sudden hit on the ice, and a tweak to the puck all affect the integrity of the puck. Among both “old” and “young” players, the question constantly arises of how to wrap a club for its greater efficiency.

Choice of material for winding

It is necessary to choose a special insulating tape in order not to damage sports equipment. The choice of tape depends on which part is planned to be wrapped.

Cutting and Taping a New Hockey Stick

There are tapes for wrapping:

  • hook;
  • handles (grip);
  • hook and handle.

The choice of ribbon color depends on the preference of the hockey player. Most often, black is used for the hook (to mask the puck), but the upper grip can also be wrapped with colored tape to make it more recognizable and not waste time when you need to quickly take.

Features of different club lengths

A short stick or “dribbler” suitable for players who are proficient in dribbling techniques. Such an accessory is lighter and more convenient for controlling the puck on a small ice area, and it is also more practical for them to perform circular feints during the game. The short stick is ideal for those who are good at dribbling or who want to improve their dribbling skills.

Medium stick or “Destroyer”. Most often, these clubs are the choice of players from the corner sections of the field. This size can be considered a universal option that allows you to make good use of the dribbling technique and perform powerful shots on goal.

Long clubs or “Destroyers”. Usually defenders play such an accessory. With its help, you can throw the puck far away during an attack, intercept an opponent’s pass, or perform other game manipulations on the field.

Where to Cut Your Hockey Stick

Of course, this is a conditional division and each player independently chooses the optimal length of the inventory.

Hockey stick length: how to measure it correctly and find the right size?

When buying a club, the main selection criterion is its length. For experienced athletes, changing equipment is straightforward, as they usually know what they need. However, it should be borne in mind that the style of play largely depends on the length of the club. For example, when playing with a long stick, a player cannot boast of being effective in dribbling, and when choosing a short stick for himself, you should not try to hit the goal the way defenders do (in most cases, they use long sticks during the game).

Rules for measuring club length

The choice of length should be done while standing on skates. This is due to the fact that skates add a few centimeters in height, and choosing ammunition without sports shoes can be mistaken.

When taking measurements, you must look forward, and keep the club parallel to the body, making support on the nose of the hook.

For entry-level players, it is optimal to choose a medium-length or Average stick. To choose this option, it is worth stopping the choice on a stick, the height of which will be in the gap between the nose and chin. The Long stick will end above the nose and the Short stick will end below the chin.

How to wrap a golf club correctly?

The hockey stick is one of the most important things in life. During the game, the stick becomes a real friend, assistant and ally, because it is thanks to it that the hockey player scores the pucks into the opponents’ goal and protects his goal from enemy strikes. Having picked up a high-quality, comfortable club, every athlete wants to stay with it as long as possible. One of the surest and proven ways to increase the life of a hockey stick is to wrap it with specialized tapes. In addition, the winding of the club enhances the player’s playing qualities. the sensitivity of the puck increases, which allows you to make more accurate, clear and victorious strikes.

How to properly wrap a hockey stick?

There are two types of tapes: the first is for wrapping the hook, and the second for the handle.

Let’s start wrapping the club from the hook. Some hockey players only wrap the working areas: the middle, forefoot, or heel. However, most athletes prefer to wrap the hook completely to maximize surface protection from scratches, chips and cracks.

First, we wrap the heel, carefully winding the tape with an overlap. The closer each new turn goes to the previous one, the denser and more reliable your winding will turn out, however, the tape consumption will be higher. Partial overlap is also allowed, but is less reliable and efficient.

The toe of the hook can be wrapped completely or left open. In both cases, it is important to complete the wrapping correctly so that the remaining tape does not stick out and interfere with the game. If you leave the padlock open, tear off the tapes at the top of the club. If you want to wind completely, continue winding outside of the club. After that, carefully cut off the excess with scissors.

Finally, iron the wrapping with a washer on both sides to get rid of air bubbles and strengthen the bond.

Then proceed to winding the handle. We make the first few turns from above, after which we unwind the tape by 30-50 cm and twist it into a pigtail. We wrap the resulting tourniquet around the club at regular intervals of 2-3 cm. Then we unfold the straightened tape and begin to wrap the handle, going up to the top of the club and closing the resulting pigtail. We reach the end of the handle and complete the winding.
