How to remove the coil from the electric trimmer video

Grass trimmer coil device

Trimmer mowing heads come in a variety of designs, both simple and complex. The picture below shows an exploded view of a semi-automatic trimmer head from a Husqvarna (Husqvarna) brushcutter.

This type of head is present on most mowers and electric trimmers, such as STIHL (STIHL), Patriot (Patriot), Champion (Champion), Bosch (Bosch), Huter (Huter) and others. The device of the mowing head is quite simple. It includes the following details:

  • mowing head base;
  • button for semi-automatic cord feed;
  • bobbin (spool) into which the fishing line is tucked;
  • spring;
  • eyes. through them the line comes out;
  • trimmer head cover;
  • line (cord).

There are also simpler trim heads shown in the following photo.

All these attachments do not allow you to change the length of the line in a semi-automatic mode (after pressing a button). If the cord breaks, you have to stop the mower and change it manually.

Line does not extend automatically

If the line does not lengthen when you lightly hit the grass trimmer button on the ground, the reasons may be as follows:.

Option 1. a bite has occurred, i.e. clamping the cord between turns. This problem usually appears if the user has been winding the line on the reel unevenly, with intersecting turns, or winding it with insufficient tension. In the latter case, when the mowing head rotates at high speeds under the influence of centrifugal force, the cord begins to tighten, as a result of which inter-turn clamping of the fishing line is possible. To fix the problem, you will have to disassemble the coil on the trimmer and rewind the cord correctly, that is, in even turns with good tension.

Option 2. too short ends protrude from the head. The line may not come out when hitting the ground if the ends sticking out of the head are not long enough (short). In this case, the centrifugal force is not enough to stretch the line. Therefore, it is required to stop the unit (turn off the engine or disconnect the electric grass trimmer from the mains) and pull the line manually, after pressing the button.

Option 3. the line is brazed inside the mowing head. This causes the coil to lock and not spin when the button is pressed. Basically, this happens for several reasons: poor cord quality, coil overheating during prolonged operation of the unit, line hitting hard objects.

  • In the first case, third-party cord can be made of low-quality and low-melting materials that cannot withstand mechanical and thermal stress. Therefore, you should give preference to “branded” lines.
  • But, if you nevertheless purchased a fishing line of unknown quality, and it is often soldered during operation, then you can follow the example of some users who, after filling the cord into the reel, wet it with either silicone grease (from a can) or mineral oil. This procedure greatly reduces the likelihood of soldering the turns of the fishing line together.
  • Also, the line can be soldered if it hits a hard object (stone, fence, dry branch, etc.) during mowing. As a result, it stretches slightly and is pulled back into the head at high speed. From friction, the cord heats up, and its turns stick together. The only thing that can be done to correct this problem is to open the reel of the grass trimmer and rewind the line.

Method 2. two segments

fundamentally no different from the method The only difference is two wound pieces of fishing line, instead of one.

There are two special fixing sockets on the coil (see picture above).

They cling to it with a hook formed earlier on the fishing line, and begin to wind the fishing line.

Winding is carried out in a special order

The winding must be carried out in the following order: first the lower line, i.e. the one that is closer to the fixing holes at the bottom of the coil, and only then the top one, i.e. the one that will overlap the bottom section.

The tips are cut into the holes in the grass trimmer spool body. They are pulled up until they click, which means that the line has come out of the latches.

The tips are threaded into the holes in the grass trimmer spool body

The coil is fastened into the body. The line in the spool has been replaced.

Preparing for replacement

For clarity, the mowing head (spool) was removed from the brushcutter. To replace the fishing line, you do not need to remove it, everything is done locally. It doesn’t take long.

remove, coil, electric, trimmer, video

We disassemble the spool of the grass trimmer. it rests on the latches. Remove the cover by pressing on the latches. If you do not have enough effort to do this with your hands, then use a screwdriver.

The spool consists of the following:

  • Spring casing
  • Cover with locking latches
  • Button coil

The principle of operation is as follows. By pressing the button, the spool presses on the spring and comes out of the locking grooves in the spool cap. Holding in this state, the reel can be twisted, thereby adjusting the length of the line. When the button is released, the body spring returns the coil to its original fixed state.

On the bottom of the reel there are several holes for different diameters of the lines. They may differ from trimmer manufacturer. In some cases (like here) they are signed, in others they are not.

These holes are needed to fix the line when changing it. After winding the fishing line on the bobbin, the ends of the latter are inserted into them. This is to prevent the scaffolding from unwinding when the coil is installed in the grass trimmer body. In other words, it makes it easier to change the line.

There are models without specifying the diameter of the consumable. Then, in order to find out what the maximum diameter of the scaffold can be used, it is tried on along the holes for the outlet of the fishing line from the body of the spool of the grass trimmer (see the figure below).

The reel has two line sections separated by a baffle. They may not exist. They are needed only to delimit and facilitate the winding of the consumable.

First, they are determined with the required length of the loess. The latter is wound into one of the sections of the coil so that it does not go beyond its limits. In this case, 3 mm was wound, the length turned out to be about 2 meters. Those. for two sections you need a 4-meter segment. this is for the 1st method. For the second method, you need two segments of 2 meters each.

Now you need to figure out which way you need to wind it. To do this, many trimmer manufacturers apply special designations to the spools, such as in the figure below.

If no such designations were found, then you need to pay attention to the spool body. There is necessarily an arrow that indicates the movement of the mowing head. The line is wound in the opposite direction.

Major coil malfunctions

Electric trimmer and lawn mower users often face a problem with a semi-automatic mowing head. Coil malfunctions can be as follows:

  • the line does not lengthen automatically;
  • the cord spontaneously comes out of the reel.

Replacing the coil on the trimmer

The grass trimmer, whether petrol or electric, is the only solution for mowing grass in tight spaces that a wheeled lawnmower cannot handle. As a cutting tool in trimmers, metal knives or a special line are used, which is tucked into the coil of the grass trimmer. But, unfortunately, trimmer heads become unusable over time during operation. Some malfunctions can be eliminated by hand, and some require a complete replacement of the mowing head.

For maximum clarity, we suggest that you familiarize yourself with the video instructions. Izhmash lawn mower is taken as an example.

a grass trimmer is a necessary and useful tool for a summer cottage and a private house. Many people own and actively use it, but not everyone knows how to replace the line in the trimmer, especially at first.

In this instruction, we will walk through the entire replacement process step by step. Looking ahead, there are two ways to line the trimmer spool. There is no fundamental difference. the difference lies in the fact that in the first case one line will be refueled, folded in half, and in the second there will be two such lines.

The cord lengthens spontaneously

There are times when the user of the grass trimmer notices a very fast line flow. At the same time, he never hit the ground with a button to lengthen the line. The reason that the line spontaneously lengthens, being cut on a special knife on the casing of the device, may be the absence of a spring in the mowing head. Often novice users of mowers, trying to load the line into the reel, forget to install the pressure spring in the head, or completely lose it when opening the lid, and in the future, do not even know about its existence.

Also, the line can be lengthened without using a button if the spring is loose. If checking the spring has confirmed this fact, then several washers must be placed under it in order to enhance its clamping properties.

Filling the line in the electric scythe

Let’s consider how to thread the line into the reel yourself. First you need to remove the coil and the protective cover from it. Select the line, cut off the required amount.

We start winding on the reel: for this, we fix one end of the fishing line in the gap, carefully wind the fishing line. The line must be wound so that the protective casing closes quietly, the line can unwind on its own. We insert the other end into the hole in the protective casing. We take the coil and cover. We draw the end of the line into the hole in the lid and pull the line a little.

We put this design on the grass trimmer. We turn the coil clockwise until a specific click. We fix it. We connect the braid to the network. the grass trimmer should be in its original position. We turn it on. Extra centimeters of line will cut off the trimming blade.

When cutting, the line should not come into contact with hard objects, because they tear the line. If the line feed in the device is not automatic, then the driver will have to stop often, remove the reel and rewind the line.

It should be noted that there are line options that are adapted to coarse weeds. It looks like a pigtail, it has its own specific coil.

The grass trimmer, whether petrol or electric, is the only solution for mowing grass in tight spaces that a wheeled lawnmower cannot handle. But, unfortunately, trimmer heads become unusable over time during operation. Some malfunctions can be eliminated by hand, and some require a complete replacement of the mowing head.

How to remove the coil from the grass trimmer with your own hands?

In this article, we’ll show you how to remove the coil from your grass trimmer. For electric and gasoline brushcutters, the mowing head is often removed to replenish the cutting thread, to install a spare disc with a different line diameter or shape, and to install cutting blades.

Any lawn mower is designed for regular replacement of the mowing head, so its design ensures, firstly, ease of operation, and secondly, secure attachment. This rule is met by the STIHL electric grass trimmer and the Chinese lawn mower.

Basic rules on how to remove the head from the grass trimmer

So how do you remove the head from the grass trimmer? This operation is performed as follows:

  • The coil is disconnected only when the petrol tool is switched off.
  • The cap of the coil is unscrewed, which holds the spring inside the coil.
  • Pressing the latches located on the sides of the cover, disconnect it from the brushcutter body.
  • The holes in the gearbox bowl and in the crankshaft hub are aligned with each other. Depending on the specific model, the holes are located on the bottom or side of the brushcutter.
  • Crankshaft rotation is blocked. To do this, insert a hex key or a regular steel rod into the hole of the gearbox.
  • The mowing bobbin is removed, which covers the screw.
  • The screw is unscrewed, depending on the specific model, with a slotted or Phillips screwdriver.
  • Hold the mowing head housing and loosen the screw. The latter is unscrewed counterclockwise.
  • The mowing head is removed. It is necessary to remove the coil without jerking in smooth movements, slightly shaking the disc from side to side.
  • The new reel fits onto the grass trimmer with the same smooth, rocking motion.
  • Re-assembling the grass trimmer.

The described operation with small variations is applicable to electric and petrol trimmers of all well-known brands. Husqvarna, Makita, STIHL, Partner, Champion, etc.

How to quickly and easily remove the line from the grass trimmer?

Here are some basic rules for removing the line from the grass trimmer. This operation should be performed to replace the cutting thread. Recall that fishing lines of different shapes should be used for mowing different types of grass:

  • Thin square-shaped threads. for leveling the lawn in front of the house;
  • The “star” thread is used for cutting dry and overripe grasses;
  • The twisted cord is installed when mowing large areas in which various types of grass grow;
  • Reinforced cord is used to combat young growth of trees and shrubs.

It is faster and easier to replace a spool of line than to wind a new thread onto an old one. over, in some cases it is simply impossible to do it.

So here are the rules and tips for quickly and easily removing the coil from an electric or petrol-type grass trimmer:

  • Before wedging the gearbox before unscrewing the mowing head, check the cleanliness of the hole. It may be clogged with grass debris. The hole must be thoroughly cleaned of grass residues. Otherwise, you will soon have to clean the gearbox.
  • If you are replacing a damaged coil, again, check to see if there are any plastic parts of the housing inside the hole in the gearbox. Even soft plastic can seriously damage the gear mechanism.
  • Buy branded reels or those that exactly fit your brushcutter model. Otherwise, there may be problems with the thread, and because of this you will not be able to install a new coil.
  • Most manufacturers use left-hand threads for trimmers. But there are exceptions to this rule.
  • When changing, the tool must be laid horizontally with the motor down.
  • The coil is removed only by hand without using any percussion tools (hammer, chisel, etc.). Their use can damage the body of both the mowing head and the brushcutter itself.
  • When installing a new coil, do not screw it too tightly to the body, since during operation the seat will become clogged with grass residues and dirt. This can make it difficult for you to change the mowing head next time.
  • Fitting to a grass trimmer, especially an electric grass trimmer, large-diameter line or cutting blades is allowed only if the manufacturer allows it in the operating instructions.

By following these rules and tips, you can easily change the mowing reel. And you don’t need to watch YouTube tutorials for this.
