How to replace a starter on a lawn mower

Starting a car in frost: what to do to “reanimate” a car in frost

replace, starter, lawn, mower

While the Arctic cold snap came to Ukraine, due to which the air temperature at night drops to.20 degrees, Ukrainian drivers have already encountered problems caused by the cold snap.

Ukrainian News proposes to brush up on a few tricks that can help “revive” the car after a frosty night and easily start it.

In theory, every modern car should start without difficulty, even at a thirty-degree question. To do this, the car must have a charged battery, a working starter and a generator, and the appropriate oil must be poured into the car engine.

As a rule, failure to comply with the above points becomes the reason that the car refuses to start in severe frosts. Let’s take a look at each of them.

Battery

The storage battery (accumulator battery) in most situations is the main reason that the starter either does not start the engine at all, or does it with great difficulty. This indicates a problem with the battery.

There can be several reasons for a battery malfunction: an exhausted battery resource, defects or violations of the operating conditions of the battery. In addition, the cold temperature, by itself, increases the load on the battery.

Experts recommend starting with the simplest thing. cleaning the battery terminals. If this does not help, you can try to turn on the high beam or radio for 10-15 seconds to warm up the battery a little.

If this did not help in solving the problem, then you will have to start the car either from the “pusher” or “light up” the battery from another car.

It is noted that in severe frosts it is better to remove the battery altogether and take it indoors for a while, while the car is idle.

Starter

With the starter, everything is very simple. If it cranks but won’t start the engine, the problem is probably a weak battery. If you are confident in the battery, then the cause is a malfunction of the starter itself.

You will be able to do something in such a situation on your own. The starter must either be repaired or replaced with a new one.

Experts note that if the engine failed to start the first time, the starter should be “tormented” for no more than 10 seconds at a time. After you need to wait a minute and try again.

Spark plug

Candles can be another reason why the engine doesn’t want to start. Most likely they are either contaminated, due to which a spark does not appear, or they are filled with fuel.

If you are in a hurry, you can try to let the gasoline drain and ventilate the cylinders by pressing the gas pedal when starting the starter.

However, experts insist, it is best to check the candles and clean them in advance in this situation.

Motor oil

The car engine may not start due to improperly selected oil for cold weather, which at low temperatures thickens in the engine and interferes with its operation.

In addition, some car owners do not pay attention to the viscosity index when choosing an engine oil, or they forget to change the “summer” oil for a more frost-resistant one.

Coping with this problem outright is also not easy. You will have to warm up the vehicle to change the oil. Therefore, the main advice is to constantly monitor its quality.

Fuel

If you intentionally or accidentally refueled at an unchecked gas station, then this may be one of the reasons for the “dead” engine. At some stations, gasoline can be trivially diluted with water. It thickens at low temperatures.

In such a situation, the driver will be helped by the so-called “quick start”. a special agent in the form of a spray or aerosol, which is sprayed onto the engine intake manifold, helping it to start.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, the Cabinet of Ministers instructed regional administrations to equip heating points in cities and bring special equipment to the most problematic areas to clear roads from snow.

It was also reported that in 2020, three Ukrainian cities were in the TOP-20 of the global rating in terms of car traffic and road congestion.

Lower the front wheels

Remove the wooden block and return the mower to its original position.

Raise the front wheels

Push the rear handle down to lift the front wheels up. This time, place a block of wood between the blade and the front deck.

Remove the crankshaft pulley

Locate the crankshaft pulley and turn it counterclockwise. When you pull out the crankshaft pulley, you can easily release the drive belt.

Replace the crankshaft pulley

Install the crankshaft pulley to its original position by turning it clockwise. Carefully fasten the drive belt with the crankshaft pulley.

Open the fuel tank

Remove the plastic sheet located under the fuel tank cap.

Install the drive belt into the transmission pulley

Pull the front hood up and align the drive belt with the transmission pulley. At the end of the calculation, lower the front hood.

Reinstall the blade

It’s time to reinstall the blade. Align the blade with the crankshaft pulley using the screws. Use a socket wrench to tighten the screws.

How to replace the starter motor in a John Deere lawn mower or garden tractor yourself

Modern John Deere garden equipment https://farmpartsstore.com/john-deere/sprayer/ is equipped with an electric starter that visually resembles a car. The principles of operation of these devices are identical. The ignition key turns, and the solenoid activates a tiny gear, the rotation of which leads to the launch of a second gear located in the bowels of the engine. Inside the starter itself there are brushes that periodically fail. If a breakdown occurs, the owner of the lawn mower has to think about replacing the part on his own.

Before you. detailed instructions for replacing the starter in self-guided lawn mowers. On John Deere models, turning the key activates a dedicated flywheel. If the mechanism does not work after clicking, you are faced with a malfunction. The device will need to be replaced with a branded analogue.

Removing worn parts

Before starting work, disconnect the battery and allow the motor to cool down. The tractor must be driven onto a flat surface and secured with the parking brake. For subsequent actions, hands should be protected with work gloves. Switch off the ignition, remove the key and fold the seat. Further procedure:

  • Remove the bolt that secures the battery to the negative cable, then disconnect the negative electrical cable.
  • After removing the ventilation casing, look under the hood of the unit.
  • Now you need to remove the air duct.
  • The air filter is secured with locking knobs (they hold the cover). Handles rotate counterclockwise.
  • After completing the task, remove the cover, and then take out the filter.

After that, you need to get rid of the screw holding the filter housing. Reach the fan housing and unscrew the mounting bolts. Remove the case, then take out the damaged part. The starter wire is held in place by a retaining nut and must be removed. Then the bolts are unscrewed and the left bolt wire holder is torn. That’s it, the starter can be removed.

Installing a new part

After replacing the starter, secure the spare part with the right mounting bolt. Position the left bolt and power holder, route the cable and tighten the left bolt tie. The mounting nut secures the starter wire. Install in reverse order:

  • bottom panel;
  • new starter;
  • ventilation casing;
  • air outlet;
  • fastening bolts of the ventilation casing;
  • air filter with cover;
  • duct.
  • Return the hood to its original place. Note that the rear bolts are usually longer than the front bolts. Remember to connect the battery and connect the negative terminal to the negative power cable. The process is complete, you can lower the seat.

    Brush assembly wear

    What happens: the starter does not turn, but clicks are heard when the ignition key is turned.

    If there is a reliable contact on all connections, the retractor relay switches on properly, and the starter still does not turn, then the problem is most likely in the wear of the graphite brushes. Over time, they wear off, do not fit tightly to the rotor collector and do not transmit current to it.

    Apply voltage to the starter bypassing the control relay or close the two large terminals on the retractor with a screwdriver. If it does not spin, it is necessary to check the brush assembly, armature and stator windings for breakdown or breakage.

    What to do: remove the starter, disassemble it and replace the brushes with new ones.

    As a temporary solution, tap on the starter housing with a screwdriver or wrench. This can bring skewed brushes back into place and restore adhesion to the manifold.

    Insufficient battery charge

    What happens: the starter does not turn or turns very sluggishly, clicks are heard, the indicators on the dashboard go out.

    With a discharged battery, there is still enough energy to turn on the solenoid relay. the same clicks from under the hood, but not enough to rotate the crankshaft and start the engine.

    What to do: Check the battery charge and, if the level is less than 12 V, fully charge it. Also eliminate the cause of the discharge so that the problem does not recur.

    Why does not the starter turn and what to do about it

    Oxidation of contacts, breakdown of the solenoid relay and other malfunctions due to which the engine does not start.

    Why does not the starter turn

    Overrunning clutch jammed

    What Happens: The starter motor spins with a whirring sound without cranking the engine.

    For normal operation of the bendix, the rollers inside the freewheel must move freely in their grooves. Due to the ingress of grease, they stick, and then the bendix does not go into the working position.

    What to do: Remove the starter. Replace the bendix with a new one or disassemble and clean the coupling.

    In an emergency, you can try to turn the starter for 5-10 seconds to warm up the lubricant inside the clutch and return it to work. The next crank will start the engine.

    Breakdown of the stator or rotor windings

    What happens: the starter does not turn, but a distinct click is heard when the ignition key is turned.

    Unlike brush wear, this malfunction is rare. Its essence is in violation of the integrity of the stator windings, which is why they are closed with each other or on the case. The ingress of chips between the rotor blades has a similar effect.

    What to do: Contact an auto electrician for repair or replacement of the starter. It is quite difficult to defect and eliminate such malfunctions on your own.

    Replacing a Starter Motor on a Riding Lawn Mower

    Breakdown of the solenoid relay

    What happens: the starter does not turn, no sounds are heard.

    If, when the ignition key is turned, voltage appears on the control (thin) wire of the retractor relay, but the device itself does not turn on and does not even click, then it is faulty. The reason is that there is no contact inside the relay coils or the so-called pyataks are burnt.

    What to do: Replace the solenoid relay. If it has a removable cover, you can try to disassemble the case and clean the contact pads or change them.

    Peeling off magnets

    What happens: the starter does not turn, but a distinct click is heard when the ignition key is turned.

    Another rare malfunction that occurs in permanent magnet starters. The latter replace the stator field windings and can come off over time due to the strong lateral effect of the magnetic field. Starter stops working.

    What to do: Contact an auto electrician for a repair. You can try to attach the magnets yourself, but this requires special glue.

    How to repair electric lawn mowers yourself?

    A reliable and simple tool for cutting grass in a garden area. a lawn mower, is extremely in demand. However, it can break. Repair will be required. As a rule, electric lawn mowers are repaired at service centers.

    In order not to transport a sufficiently voluminous apparatus to the workshop, a number of faults can be eliminated with your own hands.

    Types of malfunctions of electric mowers

    Why lawn mowers won’t start?

    To answer the question, you need to understand that all breakdowns are divided into mechanical and electrical. The first include malfunctions:

    • knives;
    • wheels;
    • handles;
    • corps.

    To the second. everything connected with the engine, be it electric or gasoline.

    It is not difficult to repair blunt knives on your own, since they are removable and you can sharpen them with ordinary emery, maintaining a sharpening angle of 30 degrees. In case of malfunctions of other parts, i.e. bodies, wheels, handles, they will also need repair or replacement.

    In battery-powered devices, battery failure is added to this problem. It is more difficult to cope with the repair of a lawn mower equipped with a motor, i.e. gasoline and electric lawn mower.

    In the first case, the problem of overheating and overloading, as well as malfunctions in the oil and fuel supply circuit, are added to possible breakdowns. Electrical breakdown can also be caused by overheating or overload, since not all models are equipped with protection.

    Overheating is caused by prolonged operation of the device with an inadequate air filter, which makes it difficult for sufficient air to pass through.

    You will have to cool the electric motor by disconnecting it from the power supply and replace the filter. In the future, in order to avoid repairing the electrical apparatus, it must be cleaned at least once every three months.

    If there is an abnormal noise or odor, the electric lawnmower needs repair. Not everyone will do it with their own hands, because the drive will need to be replaced.

    How to identify the cause of a breakdown?

    It is necessary to start repairs, guided by the principle “from simple to complex”, i.e. it is recommended to start repairs by checking the presence of gasoline in the tank. If the gasoline device stopped starting after wintering, the fuel should be replaced.

    After all, the fuel, unfortunately, is not always of a decent quality. Consequently, during prolonged inactivity of the device, it may delaminate or form a deposit. And motors are sometimes very sensitive to fuel quality.

    If there is no doubt about the latter, but the mower does not start, it is necessary to check the spark by removing the wire with the cap from the spark plug, unscrewing it with the wrench supplied in the kit.

    Attach a spark plug to a clean metal surface (without paint) of the engine, first putting a cap on it, and asking someone to jerk the starter.

    If the blue spark does not appear, the spark plug must be replaced.

    If an unstable and weak spark appears, the candle will need to be cleaned with a file or sandpaper.

    They also change it if black carbon is found on the surface, regardless of whether it was formed due to poor fuel quality or an incorrectly tuned carburetor.

    Another problem that is easy to fix is a clogged fuel hose. They check this by disconnecting it: if the fuel does not flow, then the filter or saloon is clogged. The filter will have to be replaced, the saloon can be cleaned with a needle.

    It’s good if the mower works after that. However, the cause of the malfunction in 90% of cases lies elsewhere. the failure of the carburetor, which will need repair. You can cope with the repair with enough experience. If it is absent, you will need the help of the service center.

    Electric mower malfunction repair

    Long grass can become entangled in the knives. For repairs, you need to disconnect the device from the network and turn the cylinder in the opposite direction.

    If the electrical device is silent, the drive belt needs to be repaired as a result of wear: it can be stretched or broken. This means that you cannot do without replacement, for which you need to remove the protective cover.

    A new belt is first installed on a small gear of an electrical apparatus, then put on a large pulley and turning it.

    To replace the power cable of this electrical device, it is necessary to de-energize the device and unscrew the cover.

    To disconnect the cord, insert a hex wrench into the hole with the wires, releasing the clip.

    Install the new power cord in reverse order.

    The reason may be hidden in a faulty power switch, which is simply replaced with a new one.

    Electric lawn mower does not start or stalls

    Sooner or later, many are faced with the failure of the lawn mower. This happens, as a rule, after 3-4 years of active operation or after the device has been stored in an unheated room in the winter.

    The mower is out of order if:

    • does not start;
    • the lawn mower stalls shortly after it starts up;
    • the engine does not run at full power or is intermittent

    Problems with the engine appear over time in all devices, regardless of whether a simple “Chinese” or an expensive “Japanese” are on it. The moment is unpleasant, but you should not be upset, just as there is no need to rush to the service center. You can try to repair yourself.

    Repairing an unexpectedly stopped electric motor

    If the engine worked, but suddenly stalled, you need to check the crankshaft and piston. they may have stuck. This is due to the lack of oil in the crankcase. With this breakdown, it is better to contact a specialist, as in the case when the electric motor of a lawn mower requires repair.

    Lawn mower repair

    Preventive work

    For trouble-free operation of the mower, the owner must carry out regular maintenance after the end of the working season, i.e. before placing it for winter storage. It will cost less than repairing or buying a new electrical device.

    One of the main measures to ensure the reliable operation of an electric mower is to keep it clean. The mowed grass under the deck erodes the metal parts. A compressor or blower will help to remove the remnants of cut weeds.

    The electric motor of the mower is air-cooled, therefore it also needs to be kept clean, which is the key to efficient operation. Suitable for cleaning the cooling fins with a soft brush and compressed air.

    Timely oil change, specified in the instruction manual, will guarantee long-term trouble-free operation, as well as periodic cleaning of the air filter.

    With some experience, it is not difficult to repair lawn mowers with your own hands. The video below will help with this.

    Repair Tools Stihl 180

    To carry out a relatively high-quality repair of the Stihl chainsaw

    ms 180 without the help of others, you will need to have:

    • air compressor (for cleaning the chainsaw and blowing out the main components and assemblies);
    • vacuum gauge, needed to check the density of the crankcase and carburetor, and also to identify defective oil seals;
    • a piston stopper to limit the stroke of the crankshaft;
    • electric tachometer, for the ability to correctly adjust the carburetor of the chainsaw;
    • T-key STIHL Torx 27 or equivalent;
    • crankshaft bearing puller.

    Spring tension

    After installing the spring, tighten it. To do this, perform the following actions:

    • remove the handle from the starter cord;
    • then the rope is inserted into the reel groove;
    • tension the spring by rotating the coil in the opposite direction to the clockwise direction (winding);
    • make the required number of revolutions specified in the operating instructions for the used trimmer model and corresponding to the length of the cord used;
    • at the very end, the rope is threaded into the hole intended for this, located in the starter cover;
    • put the handle in place, fixing it with a knot.

    If, after repair, the spring continues to fly off, then you can get rid of it in the following ways:

    • squeeze a piece of the plate suitable in size into the groove at the location of the spring hook;
    • drill holes on both sides of the groove in the spool, into which to insert the spring hook and fix it with a wire.

    How to assemble a starter?

    The most important thing in the process of self-repair of a starter is to assemble it correctly.

    After the spring is fully wound, you need to carefully turn the coil over and insert it into the starter housing so that the second spring hook enters the housing groove.

    Installing or replacing the starter spring for lawn mowers, motor-drill, trimmer

    But what if everything is in perfect order with the rope, and the reel (pulley) of the starter does not unwind? Let’s take a look at this question step by step using the example of the starter of the gasoline ADA GroundDrill motor-drill, which has a pulley with 2 metal antennae for 2 hooks.

    In the case of other types of manual starters of an identical design, which are widely used in gasoline lawn mowers, trimmers and motor drills, the whole process of repairing a starter will look the same, differing only in certain aspects.

    How to repair a trimmer starter

    Petrol trimmer starter repair may be required at the most inopportune moment. In this case, the problem can be solved in two ways: replace the broken part or change the entire unit. The latter option is more expensive. To repair the device with your own hands, in most cases, you will only need a screwdriver with the appropriate tip from the tools. Repair work does not take much time and does not require special knowledge. It is enough to know the device, the principle of operation, the nuances of assembling and disassembling the starter on the trimmer in order to achieve the desired positive result.

    Starting assembly

    The starter assembly is assembled in several stages:

    • the coil is inverted by installing it in such a way that the spring bend fits exactly into the groove of the casing, as in the photo below;
    • lay two washers between which a spring is installed;
    • put the cup with antennas in place;
    • tighten the screw (photo further).

    When performing the above manipulations, you must lay two washers. If this is not done, the spring will eventually damage the plastic cup, and when lifted up, it will start to get stuck. Because of this, it feels like spring has flown. To eliminate this disadvantage, you need to install this part of a longer length or an additional washer.

    When such spare parts are not available, you can slightly loosen the screw and the starter unit will start working without jamming. But this option is temporary. it is better to have it properly repaired as soon as possible.

    Disassembly and inspection

    To restore the starter to work, it must be disassembled. Before that, it is advisable to check:

    • free movement of the bendix only in one direction. in the other direction the coupling should be locked;
    • the operation of the retractor relay, that is, the presence of a click and extension of the overrunning clutch. for this, you need to supply current directly from the battery to the output of the control terminal of the relay, at the same time connect the minus to the starter housing;
    • the amplitude of the armature rotation, which must be at least 5000 rpm. connect the control wire of the solenoid relay to the lower contact bolt.

    For disassembly, you will need wrenches, screwdrivers, pliers. You also need to prepare a small hammer with a comfortable handle, a multimeter and a vernier caliper. You should check the anchor of the device, the operation of the return spring, and after removing the back cover. the condition of the brush group. Before assembly, all parts must be thoroughly cleaned with gasoline and dried. Be sure to add grease to the gears, and treat the bearings (bushings) with engine oil. Before installing the solenoid relay, apply a layer of sealant on its surface in contact with the starter cover.

    Rotor wear

    If, after disassembling, scratches, risks and other defects are visible on the armature manifold, it must be sanded with fine glass sandpaper. This is provided the defects are small. It is also recommended to carefully clean the grooves. But with significant surface roughness or the protrusion of mica between the plates, the collector must be turned on a lathe. After that, sand with fine abrasive paper.

    Special attention should be paid to checking the runout relative to the trunnion. For a rotary collector, this indicator should not exceed 0.05 mm. You should also inspect the reliability of soldering the leads of the armature winding to the plates. If the contacts are weak, it will be better to replace the rotor.

    Sticking brushes and other brush assembly problems

    It happens that the brushes stick on the rotary starter of the 1.6-liter Amulet A11-3708110. This may cause problems with starting the engine. In this case, the starting device must be disassembled and cleaned using VD-40. At the same time, check the brushes for a resource. those that are worn out, replace.

    Brush assembly malfunctions are immediately noticeable:

    • the car starts up with a key, then it will not start;
    • the engine does not start from the key. the ignition turns on, the system diagnoses the car, then the indicator goes out without any errors on the display, but after turning the key in the ignition lock, there is no reaction;
    • the motor is easily started from the pusher.

    Typical malfunctions

    The Chery Amulet launcher has several characteristic faults. They interfere with the normal operation of the starter, require immediate attention.

    Breakdown

    Due to excessive loads, the starter on Cherie Amulet’s car may simply boil. The engine will first start harder and harder to start, then only clicks will be heard. If, after disassembling the device, it turns out that the brush group has turned into an unpleasant-smelling sticky mass, and seizures and other damage appear on the manifold, you need to either replace the entire starter or carry out a competent repair. In the latter case, the textolite plate of the brush group is completely replaced, of course, together with the brushes and the rotary collector.

    The armature winding must be checked for breakdowns. The tester must be switched on in resistance measurement mode. This indicator should tend to infinity, otherwise. there is a short circuit.

    To avoid many problems with the starter, it is recommended to follow a few mandatory rules:

    • do not keep the starter in rotation mode for more than 10 seconds and more than 15 seconds in winter;
    • activate the starter again no earlier than a 20-second pause;
    • after three unsuccessful attempts to start the engine, be sure to check and eliminate faults in the fuel or electrical systems (ignition);
    • immediately turn the ignition key back as soon as the engine starts. otherwise the teeth of the bendix break.

    Starter Chery Amulet

    Several types of starters are installed on the Chinese subcompact Chery Amulet, which has been assembled in our country since 2006. These are models: A15-3708110BA, A15-3708110, A11-3708110EA, A11-3708110AD and A11-3708110. It is also possible to install an analogue of ATS ATSCS294 and the like. The starter Chery The amulet can also be replaced with a starting device from the Volkswagen Golf 2 and 3. It is noteworthy that the Amulet is suitable for the bendix and the retractor from the VAZ 2108.

    How to replace or replace the starter spring?

    If everything is in order with the rope on the starter, suspicion falls on the reel itself. It is driven by a ribbon spring, coiled into a roll. To change the spring, certain steps must be taken.

    • Remove the starter from the lawn mower.
    • Remove the starter coil.
    • Unscrew the main bolt holding the pulley to the housing.
    • Pull out the gripping tendrils and spring, the ribbon spring is almost fully extended or coiled into larger diameter rings.
    • Hold it in advance.
    • Check if the spring is intact (rusty streaks, fractures, etc. may be present). If the hooks at its ends are torn off, it will not be possible to bend new ones. high-carbon steel breaks when you try to bend it. Loose hooks are suitable for slight bending.
    • Make sure the auxiliary (regular) spring and washers are in place. These parts protect the coil body from being punctured by the ends of the main spring. If the washers and spring are broken, and new ones are not available, do not tighten the coil bolt tightly, but watch it. it can unscrew and get lost.
    • If the main (flat) spring is damaged, insert the same new one. Place the hook on the end of the spring in its place and bend it, inserting coil after coil into the space where it should be.

    The rewinding of the spring takes a minute. Dexterity in this action is acquired quickly.

    How to replace or replace the starter spring, see the following video.

    How to assemble a new lawn mower starter?

    To assemble the starter, do the following manipulations.

    • Pass one end of the cord through the opening at the beginning of the spool and tie it in a knot. The knot must not pass through the hole. Otherwise, you will disassemble the starter again.
    • Wind the cord onto the spool itself.
    • Install the spring into the starter housing, hook one end of it in the groove and wind it. For convenient winding, twist the body counterclockwise.
    • Place the ratchet on the spring.
    • Hook the return spring to the ratchet itself, attach it to the spool.
    • Install the main spring and housing with the assembled ratchet, connect the parts of the starter together and tighten everything with the main bolt.

    After assembling the starter, pass the free end of the cord through the hole in the housing for the reel. Re-pass the same end through the hole in the handle that the cord is pulling on. Tie a strong knot on the handle. Check the operation of the starter handbrake.

    How does the starter for lawn mowers or trimmers work??

    The starter is a generally single and universal mechanism for lawn mowers, trimmers, gasoline and diesel generator sets. It is not a problem to equip them even a car, motorcycle or scooter, if your vehicle has free space for its installation. It was not for nothing that many Soviet cars and trucks were equipped with a starter tool that remotely resembles a crowbar bent twice.

    The modern “handbrake” starts exactly from the cord. it is tied to the mechanism, and it is impossible to lose it.

    The starter assembly has the following parts:

    • hook ignition spring;
    • cord wound on a reel;
    • return spring;
    • ratchet drive and main spring;
    • mechanism housing protecting the ratchet;
    • locking bolt.

    Assembling the starter lawn mowers

    When servicing and repairing the starter, it is important to assemble it correctly. as if the assembly was carried out by the manufacturer. Any part that is incorrectly installed will prevent you from fully using your trimmer or lawn mower.

    • After winding the spring, turn the coil over and place it so that the second spring hook falls back into place. To control the correct installation of the spring, there are technological windows on the coil itself.
    • Install the starter pulley and make sure that one of the spring hooks fits into the groove located on the starter cover.
    • Insert the spring and washers on the sides to prevent the spring from rubbing off the plastic compartment in which it is located. If the spring is broken, but the other is not the same, an additional washer is placed in its place.
    • Insert the cup with antennae into the slots of the coil.
    • Install the coil in its place, tighten the bolt until it stops, but without fanaticism.

    If you do not shield the mainspring with washers from the compartment where it moves when winding and unwinding the starter cord, the reel will often jam when you try to start the trimmer or lawn mower. Loosening the coil bolt will result in its loss.

    How to assemble a lawn mower trimmer starter, watch the video.

    Worst breakdown

    There are times when the starter is still operational, but a worn out cord can break, for example. The ratchet has not yet had time to work when the engine is started, and the remnants of the cord are immediately wound on the reel, the return spring loses its hooks, the grooves in the starter housing break. The result is the replacement of both the springs and the housing.

    If a lawn mower or trimmer model has long been discontinued, it will be difficult to find exactly the same parts, and the starter is changed entirely.

    How tight the spring is cocking?

    It is possible to give the spring the necessary potential force necessary for a clear and quick winding of the cord, by determining the length of the cord in turns. To prevent the cord handle from drooping, add 1-2 more turns to the number of turns. So, if the cord has a length of 5 turns of the coil, then when charging the spring, turn the coil 6-7 full turns.

At the start, it is pulled outward. The pulley is spring loaded. as soon as you let go of the end of the rope, it will reel back. A flat tape rolled into a ring is used as a spring. It resembles a spring in a large mechanical watch that is wound once a day. The starter itself is located more often at the rear than closer to the front end of the mower or trimmer. How to change the starter cord?

    It happens that it is not the spring that is to blame for the inability to start the starter, but the cord itself. It can seize or even break. Disassembling the starter of the lawn mower or trimmer is versatile in its steps.

    • Remove starter block from trimmer or lawn mowers.
    • Remove the main bolt holding the handbrake.
    • Pull out the spool and rewind the remnants of the worn out cord from it.
    • Untie the knot on the cord handle and pull the end out of it.
    • Untie the knot at the other end (at the beginning of the spool) and remove the old cord. Knots that have become tight are untied with pliers or pliers.
    • Tie a knot at one end of the new cord, pass it through the hole at the beginning of the spool (closer to its axis).
    • Wind a few turns of the new cord onto the spool. If it is long, then cut off the excess.
    • Load and charge the spring-loaded cord tensioner (if removed) and spring-loaded elements in the correct sequence.
    • Replace the spool and thread the free end of the cord through the starter outlet and handle.
    • Reinstall the starter block.

    Twist the starter by the cord, start the engine on lawn mowers or trimmers. The larger and more powerful the engine, the more jerks of the cord will be required at startup, the norm is no more than 7 times. The result is a quick and smooth start of the motor, the readiness of the unit for operation.
