How to Run a New Chainsaw Properly

The resource of new chainsaw equipment largely depends on the quality of its preparation for subsequent operation. How to run in a chainsaw European or Chinese production with maximum efficiency?

The low-cost time and material investment process of running a new tool has a positive effect on its performance and duration of use.

How to Run a New Chainsaw Properly

Moderate loads during the first run-in phase contribute to the full grinding of internal parts, the full and inexpensive development of the designated overhaul and operational life.

Factory Run Advantages

It should be noted that the new saws of many leading manufacturers do not need a break-in. The running-in of the piston group and working equipment using special technology is carried out directly in the process of control tests.

Reducing the time of this stage contributes to the chrome plating of the inner diameter of the cylinder and the application of wear-resistant coatings on the working surfaces of loaded parts. Nevertheless, recommendations for a sparing mode of the first hours of operation of the instrument remain valid.

Criteria for self-selection of motor and chain oils

The composition recommended by the manufacturer of motor and chain oils contains special additives that provide the working surfaces with complete lubrication in a wide range of operating temperatures.

Features of fuel preparation

Each chainsaw differs from the same type of models, design features, dosage of fuel-oil working mixture, therefore, even with proper experience, it is recommended to familiarize yourself with the contents of the attached operating instructions.

For the preparation of fuel, it is recommended to use fresh gasoline with an octane rating of at least 90 and the manufacturer’s recommended heat-resistant engine oil, in the dosage indicated in the instructions.

The fuel mixture in an amount sufficient for a one-time operation is prepared in a fireproof metal container, in the best case, with an airtight stopper. In the absence of oils recommended by the manufacturer, it is possible to replace them with a full-fledged analogue of the JASOFB or ISOEGB category.

Gasoline with an oil component should not be stored for more than 2 months. The working properties of overexposed gasoline-oil mixture significantly deteriorate over time.

Preparing for the first launch

Before starting the chainsaw, make sure that the headset emergency stop mechanism is turned off. The engine is started in the recommended instruction sequence.

After a short warm-up, the power unit is recommended to be brought to medium speed to check the lubrication system. To do this, just hold the headset over a sheet of paper. The presence of an oil strip indicates the serviceability of the system and full lubrication of the saw chain.

The bearings of the driven sprockets of guide tires with a length of 16 or more inches are lubricated individually after 8-10 hours of operation.

Carb adjustment

A full break-in of a new chainsaw provides for the correct tuning of the fuel system. The standard factory carburettor adjustment is based on averaged data, therefore, depending on external factors, it needs to be adjusted.

A saw with an adjusted carburetor should quickly gain momentum, equally stable in operating mode and idle speed. The proper quality of the air-fuel mixture is also indicated by the brown color of the spark plug insulator.

Initial Breakdown Recommendations

  • The practice of running a new chainsaw without a saw set is fundamentally wrong, since all its moving elements need to be burned in.
  • The standard break-in time is a few hours. In any case, the design of chainsaws of any quality and price level does not provide for continuous operation of the engine at idle.
  • In this mode, the loaded parts of the piston group and the crank mechanism experience a significant lack of lubrication, which inevitably leads to overheating and forced wear of the working surfaces.
  • The total break-in time at idle with periodic bleeding for 25-30 seconds should not exceed 15-20 minutes.

The run-in engine without load at high speeds is categorically excluded. Over, running the tool idle is ineffective, the best result can be obtained when exposed to moderate loads. The new chainsaw can be used for sawing wood of medium density and small diameter within 100 mm.

How to extend the life of a new headset?

Experienced saw cutters practice daily exposure of a new saw set in a container with a hot chain oil with a temperature of not more than 60 ° С.

Such a procedure, known as stabilization of the internal structure of a metal, has a positive effect on its resistance to external load and temperature influences. Identical technology is recommended for the processing of saw sets used as interchangeable equipment.

During the break-in process, it is necessary to periodically check the chain tension, the presence of chain oil in the tank and its supply to the working area of the cut. It is better to postpone the check of the emergency stop mechanism until some specific skills have been developed.

Preparation for operation of Chinese-made chainsaws

The standard run-in of a Chinese chainsaw provides for the use of only branded motor oils designed to meet the performance characteristics of the Chinese chainsaw range.

Most powerful Chinese models operate on motor and chain oils with special additives that positively affect the stability of their working and operational parameters.

Analysis of controversial warranty situations

At the break-in stage, latent defects are more often manifested, which service and repair services must eliminate for free during the warranty period. Attempts to independently eliminate serious malfunctions may become the basis for the refusal of warranty repairs by service specialists.

Identified manufacturing defects, serious failures and malfunctions are eliminated at service centers free of charge, provided that the faulty unit or assembly does not have obvious signs of self-repair.

Incomplete working out of the saw headset resource is not included in the list of manufacturing defects; tires and chains are replaced in a paid version. Warranty repairs may be refused if the after-sales service proves the use of surrogate fuel and lubricant consumables.
