How to set the torque on the electric screwdriver

What do the numbers on an electric screwdriver mean??

Umbrellas in 3 folds are the most versatile umbrellas. They are also referred to as “LIGHT” numbers. The stem of such a model is folded three times.

This regulator allows you to set the torque or the turning force of your electric screwdriver. The greater the torque (the number on the turning ring), the more “power” the drill-electric screwdriver develops, and the deeper you can screw the screw into the part with which you are working.

How to determine the torque of an electric screwdriver?

Torque of an electric screwdriver knowing rotational speed n rpm./min., the torque specified in the manual and the power rating P in kW, can be determined by the formula M=P9550/n.

The value of torque in an ordinary household tool used for single tasks is quite enough in the range of 10. 15 Nm. In professional two- and three-speed cordless screwdrivers, this parameter exceeds 130 Nm to easily cope with drilling in very hard materials.

How to change the nozzle on an electric screwdriver

An electric screwdriver is a tool that can be used to quickly screw fasteners (screws, self-tapping screws, screws); it is used to assemble furniture, hang shelves, drill holes, install a suspended ceiling or trim. To understand how to properly use an electric screwdriver, it is worth learning more about how it is designed, what work can be performed with it.

Design and function of the electric tool

The screwdriver is used for tightening and unscrewing various fasteners. The tool can be used for tapping and drilling. It makes work much easier and faster. The screwdrivers are used at home, in construction, for assembling furniture, in car repair shops and wherever there are a lot of screws to be driven.

How much torque an electric screwdriver should have?

The torque of an electric screwdriver is an important parameter to consider when choosing a power tool. Be sure to take into account whether the tool will be used for home work or professional work. On sale today there are a variety of models that differ in their characteristics.

In the construction market there are many models of screwdrivers from different manufacturers, which differ depending on the power source, parts and functions.

How to use a screwdriver correctly

In order to use the device successfully, it is important to follow the instructions precisely. How to use an electric screwdriver?

Preparing to work

Beginners often do not even know how to properly turn on an electric screwdriver. To use the product at home, do the following:

  • Remove from the case and make sure there is no damage.
  • After inspection, attach the battery and make sure that the charge is sufficient.
  • Install the right attachment. This is done taking into account the nature of the work. screwing screws or drilling.
  • With the help of the regulators to set the mode of operation and rotation speed.
  • To set the drilling depth if necessary.

At the stage of preparation for work it is required to install the necessary bits

Performing a nozzle change

Many people wonder how to correctly screw a bit into an electric screwdriver. To do this, you need to understand the specifics of the design.

To fix the bit in the chuck it is worth using a special nozzle, which has a magnetized holder. It prevents the construction from falling apart and holds the nozzle well in different positions. To fix the bit, you need to unscrew the movable piece of the chuck, place the bit there and fully screw the chuck.

Setting the torque

To set the torque, the tool is equipped with an adjustment ring with applied values. They are set depending on the hardness of the materials. So, for screwing self-tapping screws into drywall will be enough 2-4, and for durable wood. the maximum mark will be more suitable.

The direction of rotation of the chuck

The direction of rotation of the chuck can be reversed for screwing or unscrewing fasteners. It should only be done after the engine has stopped completely. The middle position of the switch blocks the use of the electric screwdriver.

The screwdriver needs breaks

For an electric screwdriver to serve the owner long enough, it is necessary to use it correctly and remember: loading the mechanical parts of this construction tool to the maximum, you should not count on prolonged and simultaneously effective work. If the motor is running at maximum speed, it can overheat and cause winding faults. Special nozzles also have a hard time: in contact with materials intended for processing, they get hot. That’s why experts recommend taking periodic breaks to cool down the drill. Do not use water to solve this problem: sharp temperature changes are undesirable.

The authors of the instructions for the tool warn: It is forbidden to adjust the bit rotation course, its frequency when the electric screwdriver is on. Wherever this tool is to be used, adequate lighting and a stable power supply are required.

Care must be taken when grounded objects are in the vicinity. It is categorically forbidden to touch them with an electric screwdriver, an electric shock will not be pleasant to anyone. To protect yourself, you must also treat the tool with care. For example, make sure that there is no danger of moisture on the housing.

The electric screwdriver has successfully replaced not only different types of screwdrivers, but also wrenches, Allen keys. This tool is also used instead of a drill. For construction workers and furniture makers, the electric screwdriver has become indispensable. For it and in the home conditions constantly there is a use. The range on the market is represented by a large variety of models. Despite the prevalence of power tools in different fields, not all users, especially beginners, know how to operate them. Proper use, maintenance and storage of power tools will extend their service life to the maximum.

According to the method of power supply, screwdrivers are divided into two varieties:

External and internal structure of cordless and cordless models are almost the same. In general, the power tool consists of the following structural elements:

  • housing;
  • chuck;
  • the switch on button;
  • The switch of motor rotation direction (reverse);
  • Speed regulator (number of revolutions);
  • power lock buttons;
  • The tightening torque regulator (torque switch).

A number of models are additionally equipped with illumination, which is structurally realized in different ways. Not every product has a speed regulator and an on-off button. Cordless screwdrivers have a power cord, but cordless screwdrivers have a charge bank instead.

The body of the power tool is most often made of plastic, much more rarely. of various metal alloys. For convenience, it usually consists of 2 halves. Inside the housing are the main parts:

Electrical connections scheme depends on the model.

The cordless screwdriver can be equipped with different types of chucks. The most common is the three-jaw quick-action version of this part. The chuck also consists of individual parts as shown in the photo below.

The principle of operation of both cordless and cordless screwdrivers is the same. The basic idea is that electrical energy drives an electric motor. The gearbox and the shaft transmit power and speed from the motor to the bit fastened in the chuck. It already drills a hole or screws in or out fasteners. The peculiarity of the process is that the electric motor of cordless models runs on AC 220 V, and battery models on DC voltage, the value of which can range from 3.5 V to 36 V.

Torque to screw diameter ratio

When selecting a cordless or mains-powered electric screwdriver it is important to determine the correct relationship between screw diameter and rotational speed. This relationship is not too difficult to determine:

Different screw diameters require different rotational speeds.

  • If the screw diameter is 6 mm, the torque while screwing in is 10 Nm. For structurally soft or rigid materials, the frequency will be 25 Nm.
  • If the diameter of the screw is 7 mm, the torque when working with rigid materials will be 27 Nm, and for soft materials. 11 Nm.
  • The maximum torque for a screw diameter of 8 mm is 30 Nm.

What this ratio indicates? You can determine what kind of torque can be used with a certain working screw diameter. Making the right choice not only makes work more efficient, but also increases quality, reliability and durability. The operation will be finished much faster, the operator will spend less effort.

With corded equipment, high power has little effect on the work process, and rechargeable batteries run down quickly. That’s why you should have spare batteries and the ability to recharge the already drained ones. Usually manufacturers provide spare batteries for professional tools, but for simpler models at least one battery has to be bought separately. When choosing an electric screwdriver, there is another function to consider. reverse torque. It is necessary in case of a drill stuck in a material. Such reversing is usually electronic and should be controlled with a two-position switch located near the start button.

What is the best torque?

An electric screwdriver is a tool that is needed to perform various kinds of work. It is not only construction, but also many home repair works, such as furniture assembly, installation of communications. To choose the right equipment, you should pay attention to the torque, on which the comfort and quality of work depends. For example, too powerful tools are not needed for furniture assembly. If you plan to install a room divider, then it is necessary to take more professional equipment, which will perfectly cope with the task.

Drills and screwdrivers are used for mixing construction mixtures, you only need to buy a construction mixer attachment.

The torque of such tools must be sufficient to mix even the most viscous mixtures and mortars, to ensure their homogeneity, high quality.

For mixing concrete and other viscous mixtures special attachments are used.

If construction mortar nozzles are to be used, the torque must be sufficient to handle not only low viscosity mixtures, but also high. The choice of model depends on the planned work. If an electric screwdriver is to be used for kneading liquid mixtures, the torque may not be too high. If the tool is purchased to work with viscous mixtures, you should already prefer professional devices, the speed of which is high.

Equipment that will be used for a variety of works, should have a speed regulator. Then the torque can be changed depending on what kind of work needs to be done. When selecting an electric screwdriver, make sure that the lock for the control button always works, not only at maximum torque. In the first case, the tool can be used for any job with the most convenient conditions. The torque is adjustable. Recommended to buy models that have manual or electronic control. They have a special step-down transformer that works great with liquid mixes when the voltage is lowered.

Torque is the main characteristic of an electric screwdriver. It determines the diameter and driving depth of the screw and the screw material (wood, concrete, steel, etc.).д.).

The torque is determined by the power of the tool, which depends on the motor and the battery. The documentation on the machine usually specifies the maximum possible diameter and length of the screw. The maximum possible torque is 60 Nm, but for household tools it is 10-12 Nm.

The efficiency of an electric screwdriver is greatly increased if it can be used in pulse mode (chiseling, like a torch).

According to the power source used the tool can be:

Cordless. Cordless screwdrivers are used at home and in industry. Battery capacity is 1.5Ah or higher, voltage 10-12V (domestic) or 18-36V for professional. The most common are nickel/metal/hybrid batteries. Lithium and nickel cadmium are also used. The choice of a cordless electric screwdriver is very suitable on new construction sites where power is not yet hooked up.

Electric screwdriver. Powered from 220 V, the disadvantage is the presence of a network cable (length limitation, some inconvenience when working).

Pneumatic Used in batch production, where there are permanent pneumatic power lines.

Screwdrivers are divided into two groups according to the type of work performed:

torque, electric, screwdriver

Household (home, amateur). They are used for small amounts of work. minor (occasional) repairs, one-time jobs (changing doors, assembling furniture).

Professional are used for large amounts of work in construction, furniture production, etc.д.

Special attention should be paid to the tools that combine 2 functions. a drill electric screwdriver.

First of all, you need to determine its exact purpose:

such tools are more expensive and require certain skills when working.

If necessary, you can choose a combined tool. a drill electric screwdriver, which is often very convenient.

It is also necessary to pay attention to the battery charging. If a domestic battery can be charged for 3-6 hours, then for a professional this time is 40-60 minutes. For reliable work it is recommended to have a set of 2 batteries.

These tools can be equipped with special reducers to reduce the speed of the electric motor. Gearboxes are usually of the planetary type, which are small in size, mass at a fairly high gear ratio. These reducers can easily be switched to drill mode. Modern screwdrivers have a torque control that allows you to screw in screws with the right force, which prevents the breakage of threads, grinding slots and

Depending on their power, they may also be called a screwdriver or a drill. takes up a significant amount of space. Those who do this kind of work often or do it all the time have long appreciated the undoubted advantages of a cordless screwdriver, its convenience, mobility and ease of use. And do you know how to choose a cordless screwdriver so that it becomes your reliable assistant in household chores??

Battery power and types

An important question for builders. how to choose a cordless tool for an electric screwdriver? Choosing a cordless tool, be sure to look at the features of its charging. Screwdrivers can be equipped with batteries with voltages from 7.2 to 36 volts. For home repair, it is recommended to choose a tool with a voltage of 9 to 12 volts. For professional construction workers, models with more than 18 volts are the right choice.

One of the tools from foreign manufacturers.

The power of an electric screwdriver depends on the type of electric battery you choose. It can be nickel-cadmium, nickel-metal hydride and lithium-ion.

The most inexpensive batteries in this list are nickel-cadmium (NiCd). They have a relatively large weight, but such batteries are inexpensive, can withstand about 1000 charge-discharge cycles and work at negative air temperatures. Such batteries have stable power and do not overheat.

Nickel-metal hydride (NiMh) batteries are slightly more expensive, take longer to charge, but are more compact and can also operate at low temperatures.

The lightest and fastest-charging batteries among those presented are the lithium-ion (Li-Ion) batteries. They quickly charge, and the charging and discharging of the battery is controlled by a special protection system. One of the disadvantages of these batteries is that they are problematic to work with in winter frosts.

Thus, each type of battery has its own advantages and disadvantages, so it is impossible to say unequivocally which one is better. It all depends on the time of year, the object and the type of work you are going to do.Opinion of the expertSergey Pochtarev, master, mr. Nizhny Novgorod. If you have a small budget, I would advise buying a classic electric screwdriver with lithium batteries. They are lightweight, fast-charging and long-lasting.

Value Dependence

Let’s list the factors on which the torque of the screwdriver depends:

  • Spinning speed of the screwdriver. The higher the speed rating, the lower the value. Spindle speed affects performance.
  • Voltage. It should be noted straight away that this is not a directly proportional relationship. Household types as a power source can use the electric network with a voltage of 18 or 24 V. Whereas professional. show high parameters, powered from 12 V power supply.
  • Limiter. Manufacturers of such tools produce many models with a torque regulator. It is a clutch with a torque scale on the surface. The second, popular name for this part is the ratchet. It limits the twisting force, at higher values, the motor performs its work without load, idle.
  • Power. Here it’s simple. The tool with the higher number of kW has the best maximum value of torque.

How to adjust the torque on a Bosch electric screwdriver, you can learn from the video clip:

In work such knowledge can be used as follows. At low speeds, a high torque is formed. It is suitable for screwing in screws with high torque at low speed. Higher RPMs should be used for drilling material or reaming holes.

Some manufacturers specify two types of torque in the data sheet: soft and hard to work with the appropriate material. You should also remember that this equipment is classified into cordless and mains types.

Choice of electric screwdriver by parameters

For an error-free purchase of an electric tool, you need to pay attention to the following parameters:

  • Brand and price. The world leaders are Bosch, AEG, DeWALT, Metabo and Sparky (Germany), Makita and Hitachi (Japan), Hilti (Liechtenstein), Black Decker (USA), Interskol and Zubr (Russia), Skil (Netherlands).

Many of the above companies manufacture their products in China, which does not affect their quality. Bosch is very popular with our men because of its durability. All other German and Japanese brands have about the same performance parameters and cost. Makita is not a bad quality-price ratio option. American tools are rarely found in the domestic market, because their cost is higher than other similar products.

  • Size and shape. In this case, compactness matters, small models will do for home work, but for frequent work with wood it is better to give preference to larger ones.

It is advisable to hold a tool in your hand before buying it.Important! A right angle between the handle and the body of an electric screwdriver can cause blisters.

  • Battery:
  • Nickel-cadmium (NiCd) batteries are inexpensive, cold-resistant and can be stored empty. Ideal for occasional use.
  • Nickel-metal hydride (NiMH). a compact, harmless device that is not in demand because of its short service life.
  • Lithium-ion (Li-Ion) have a high capacity, virtually no discharge, quick charge and a much longer life than previous variants. They are versatile, high in cost and intolerant to extremely low temperatures.

There are models that work on batteries, that is, the electric screwdriver comes with an additional battery that is replaced in case of discharge. It is more expensive to buy a new model than to simply replace the battery.

Torque (effort)

Torque. an important technical characteristic of an electric screwdriver that determines the rotational action of a force (force) on a physical body. In other words, this indicator of the force of rotation of the working element of an electric screwdriver. It allows you to determine the tightness of the working surface where the fasteners are installed, as well as the desired length and diameter of these very elements. The unit of measure for torque is the newton-meter (Nm). In household screwdrivers, this parameter is equal to 5-30 Nm, and it is enough to securely screw self-tapping screws 9 cm long into different surfaces (metal, wood, drywall), and to make the holes of the required diameter: 20 mm (wood), 9-10 mm (metal), 20-25 mm (drywall). In professional tools it can reach 100-150 Nm, which is suitable for performance of construction and finishing works of high complexity, for implementation of assembling and dismantling works, as well as for reliable furniture assembly. Most screwdriver models are equipped with a special torque switch to choose the optimal screwing speed for the fastener.

Again, if we use the quote from Wikipedia, “one newton-meter is equal to the momentum of force created by a force equal to 1 N with respect to a point located 1 meter from the line of force.

With an electric screwdriver, I can explain it this way. The chuck of an electric screwdriver has a pivot around which it rotates. Take an electric screwdriver and place it with its axis of rotation horizontally. Then let’s take an L-shaped metal rod, one side of which is 1 m long and the other side (no matter what length) will be clamped in the chuck. So, if we put the 1 m side of the rod horizontally and at its other end, opposite to the electric screwdriver, hang a 100 g weight, we get the torque applied to the chuck roughly equal to one newton-metre. And if you for example suspend a weight of 4 kg, you get 40 Nm.

So if it is stated, for example, that the maximum torque of an electric screwdriver is 40 Nm, this means that the motor of an electric screwdriver through the gear transmits to the chuck such force, as if we actually assembled the above design and suspended a load of 4 kg. The mass of the rod itself will not be taken into account.

This is what the torque of an electric screwdriver is.

Well, in conclusion, it should be said that the maximum torque is reached when the start button is pressed completely. Also, two-speed screwdrivers will have different torque at different speeds. more torque at the first speed and less torque at the second speed.

Also, screwdrivers have a special regulator that has a scale with marks from 1 to 15, 20 or other number (as the manufacturer decides) and the last mark as a drill (in this position you can and should drill), which limits the torque. That is, if you set the regulator to one of the numerical marks, then when you reach a certain value of torque, the electric screwdriver further does not twist, but simply clicks. But if you put the regulator in the “drill” position, then the electric screwdriver will not start, and will try to the last to twist what it twists. That said, the above numbers don’t really mean torque, they just show how much more or less torque you’re making (just to help you navigate faster when working)

I hope I have succeeded in explaining the torque of an electric screwdriver. At this point I take my leave. see you again!

Screw in the screw. one of those tasks that appear out of nowhere, but with enviable consistency. Fixing a warped cabinet door, hanging a mirror in the hallway, attaching a shelf to the bathroom. small household problems that need to be solved every day. Using a screwdriver to tighten a screw, bolt or self-tapping screw can be done, but it doesn’t always work. Who has tried it, knows: it’s a thankless, time-consuming task, and the result is often zero. And you need it quickly and efficiently.

Buy an electric electric screwdriver for everyday household chores. the best way out. Not to mention the fact that it is indispensable in the work of professionals. It is used on construction sites, for repairs and in furniture workshops. The electric screwdriver is used for assembling drywall structures, installing windows and doors, attaching baseboards, and assembling furniture.

It is a gross mistake to choose an electric screwdriver based solely on its cost. They differ in power and different functions. In order not to make a mistake when choosing, you should carefully study its technical characteristics before buying. The most important of these are rotational speed, torque and battery type (in cordless tools). But reading the numbers is half the battle, you still need to know how to navigate what you need for you and for the planned work.

Care and Storage

Work with a screwdriver, observing safety precautions and the rules described in the manual. Choose the right accessories. And then the tool will serve you well for a long time.

If you decide to buy a new electric screwdriver, or to understand the functionality of the old, we advise you to read this article. This information is intended primarily for “dummies” who are not very knowledgeable about power tools.

Most screwdrivers and drills are fitted with a ratchet (clutch for torque adjustment). Many average users don’t really understand what this mechanism is all about, and they hardly ever use it in their daily work. But this is not the case with the different speed settings: the characteristics are clear to the user, which is why tools with more than one gear step are popular. Let’s get into the essence of what a ratchet in an electric screwdriver is for, and how to use it correctly. let us remind complete “dummies” that visually a ratchet position in a power tool can be identified by a peculiar rotating ring, which can be set in one of about 20 positions.

How the ratchet works and what it’s for?

torque, electric, screwdriver

Most readers are roughly familiar with the clutch mechanism in automobiles, which is designed to select between engine idling and torque input to the drive. The ratchet on an electric screwdriver works on the same principle. When you pull the trigger, torque is transferred from the motor to the chuck. And with a ratchet, you can set the maximum force at which the motor stops turning and the chuck stops turning.

Using the ratchet, you can control the screwing depth of the fastener. This is particularly important in decorating work, where the surface quality of the workpiece is important. For example, when screwing a screw into drywall, the fastener may well go through, because drywall is not particularly strong, and the screw head easily sunk into the material. For this reason, it is best to set the ratchet to the minimum setting. The same is true for decorations and finishes that can be damaged by high loads. With small fasteners it is also difficult to work without a ratchet, because too high torque can destroy the fastener. The ratchet is also useful for flooring installation, when you want the fastener flats to slightly sink into the surface of the board. It is possible to make several test runs beforehand, changing the ratchet settings, and then, having found the optimal position, quickly complete the work, achieving the desired result with each of the planks.

The ratchet helps prevent the bit from shearing off when screwing into very hard materials such as pressure-treated wood or hardwood.

But there are cases when the ratchet position must be at the maximum, for example, when drilling holes with ordinary and countersinking drills, as well as with circular saws. Some screwdrivers have a drill position marked on the collar with a pictogram, others have just the last possible position without any special markings.

The adjustment procedure is very simple, just turn the socket to the desired position. The scale will help you find your bearings. If high torque is needed, turn the coupling toward higher values. If you are not sure of the needed power, it is better to start with low values and gradually increase the torque until you get the needed result. When working with drywall and small fasteners, it is advisable to start with the minimum position. If you have a large diameter or length of wood to screw into, you can start with the medium socket position. If you are working with large square head screws, you will most likely have to work at max mode. During operation, it may be necessary to change the settings up or down.

Before you start, you should ask yourself “Will the material get damaged if the screw goes too deep in it??”. If the answer is yes, it is better to start with a deliberately low torque, adding more in the process. It may take a few trial runs to find the right mode, but if you work long hours and perform repetitive tasks, you can end up saving a lot of time by practically going automatic.

Can you use only one ratchet mode??

Many users who don’t want to understand the issue do so, often setting the maximum torque on the ratchet. If you are not worried about damaging material and fasteners, you can follow their example.

Some people are driven to such a strange decision by the fact that the ratchet makes a frightening noise when the selected torque is exceeded, and it seems that the tool is about to break.

If you decide to make full use of your electric screwdriver’s functionality, it’s worth paying attention to the fact that the scales on the torque control couplings are not standardized. So, “6” on a ratchet from one manufacturer does not necessarily equal “6” on another, even if the models belong to the same class.

Practice

For a practical exercise we have taken three different electric screwdrivers and two different types of screws / self-tapping screws and will screw them into a dry pine beam, at the same time recording the success of the operation and the time spent.

Here are the names of the screwdriver models and their and brief technical specifications:

DeFort DCD-12-6 Bosch PSR 960 Hitachi DS 14DCL
torque, Nm 10 12 31
rotational speed, rpm 0-500 0-550 0-450 0-1250
battery Ni-Cd, 12 V, 1,2 Ah Ni-Cd, 9.6 V, 1.2 Ah Li-ion, 14.4 V, 1.5 Ah

The two “old guys” (Bosch and DeFort) are here for a reason. These low-power models will at once give to understand, how all above-stated theory was correct, and whether absolutely any electric screwdriver is enough to work successfully with self-tapping screws 5х90 mm and similar. And a middle-aged Hitachi will just complete the picture and play the role of some modern tool.

As for screws, we did not think too much, so we took the thin black 4.8 x 127 mm and the powerful white 6 x 150 mm to make it a complete experience. To screw the latter into the pine beam, presumably, you need a maximum torque of about 11 Nm.

So, as a conclusion we suggest you to watch a short video which captures the whole process.

The thin self-tapping screw (4.8 x 127 mm) was up to the task of all the screwdrivers without exception, although it was obvious that it was not so easy for the Bosch. The time spent by the screwdrivers was: 5.3 seconds for the DeFort, 7 seconds for the Bosch, and 2.9 seconds for the Hitachi. We did not set ourselves the task of accurately comparing the time and repeatability, we only cared about the end result. That’s why we made only one duplicate for each model.

The white “tough guy” is not everyone’s cup of tea. As in the previous case, DeFort started very fast, but could not conquer the last centimeter.

The Bosch, though it solved the problem, but the smell of burned windings made it clear that such loads are categorically contraindicated to this tool.

But for the powerful Hitachi, both self-drilling screws are like toys. Here’s what the stopwatch showed: 13.3 seconds for DeFort (it did not make 1 cm), 20.7 seconds for Bosch and 4.3 seconds for Hitachi. In addition, let’s note that Hitachi worked during the test at the second speed, where the torque is at least a third lower than the maximum declared in the specifications.

We have one more important note for the practical part: our test has involved screwdrivers of older models (Hitachi is not included), which have no overload protection system. Most modern models have such a system, so they do not let you make fun of the tool like you can see in the video with the Bosch electric screwdriver. This also means that the safety system will not allow to screw in such a screw to the end of the first time. You have to turn the tool on several more times until the next trip (usually 1-2 seconds) until the screw is driven in. But in order not to abuse the tool so much, of course, it is necessary to buy an electric screwdriver with a certain power reserve!
