How to switch speeds on a Neva power tiller
Rear speed on single axle tractor Neva with your own hands
Reverse gear of the Neva MB-2 or MB-23 motoblock can be made and installed by yourself, if you have such materials, tools and devices in your arsenal, as follows:
- welding machine and angle grinder
- gas burner;
- drill and metal drill bit;
- steel strip 5 mm thick and 35-40 mm wide;
- metal tube with a diameter of 15 mm;
- a small piece of rebar;
- a roller to install the transmission belt;
- a spring with a length of 10-12 cm;
- 0-1400 or 0-1420 belt;
- fixing elements.
In order to make the rear speed lever with their own hands, you need to study the drawings or take as a sample of the original part. The frame with the stand for the roller and the cover for belt protection is made of a strip of steel, according to the required dimensions. In order to properly install the lever in the future, a sleeve is welded to it, made from a piece of pipe, the length of which should be 73 mm. The stop is made of rebar and welded to the sleeve. The pulley is fastened to the part with the bolt of necessary diameter.
Installation of the homemade device is simple. The sleeve is put on the planting pin and on the side of the pillar with a roller the lever is fixed by the spring, which can be hooked on the nearest bolt on the body. Next, you need to install the reverse belt so that on the pulley, it was not too tight.

Gearbox of the Neva MB-1 power tiller
Gearbox. mechanical, pinion-chained, oil-filled in aluminum housing. Gearbox parts are lubricated by splashing oil. Gear shafts run in ball bearings.
Gearbox with two forward and one reverse gear. By shifting the drive belt in the drive and idler pulley grooves, the second range of rotation speeds of the gearbox output axles is provided. Thus, it is possible to provide four forward and two reverse gears.
For versions MB1 Premium/ MB1-FS Premium (gearbox Multi Agro) :
The gearbox provides the power unit with three forward gears and one reverse gear. By shifting the drive belt in the drive and idler pulley grooves, the second range of speeds of the reducer output axles is provided. Therefore, it is possible to have six forward and two reverse gears.
The gearbox part of the “Neva” MB1-B Multi-AGRO motor-block differs from the other products of this model range. This model features the Multi Agro reducer developed by the manufacturer’s specialists. Due to the new gearbox, the single-axle tractor “Neva” MB1-B Multi AGRO has obtained additional functional features.
One of the advantages of the Multi-AGRO gearbox is the increased number of gears. The Neva MB1-B Multi-AGRO power tiller has 3 forward gears and 1 reverse gear. By rearranging the belt on the two-strand pulley you can get another set of gears, which also have a functional purpose. Thus, for each agricultural and farming operation can be selected the right speed, thereby increasing the performance of work performed.
Additionally, the gearbox of the Multi-AGRO has an increased transmission ratio which improves the traction and hitching properties of the power tiller.
Clutch mechanism. consists of the V-belt, tension pulley with lever, coil return spring, cable and control lever on the steering wheel. When you press the lever, the roller moves to create the necessary tension in the drive belt, and the rotation from the engine is transferred to the driven pulley in the gearbox.
Running in of the Neva MB-1 power tillage
Long and reliable performance of your power tiller is ensured by proper use, timely maintenance and correct use of the machine in the BEGINNING PERIOD.
First 20 hours of power tiller operation is the break-in period of engine and transmission parts. Overloading is NOT acceptable during this period.
The engine running-in period must be strictly followed as described in the Engine Operator’s Manual.
Cultivate the soil during the run-in period with 4 tillers in several passes and to a depth of no more than 10 cm at a time.
Do not overload the single axle tractor when working on heavy and stony soils with tillers.
When using a single-axle tractor with a transport dolly to carry loads, do not overload it. The weight of transported cargo should not exceed 200 kg.
During the running-in period, change the oil in the engine according to the engine manual, and check and retighten the threaded joints.
After running it for 20 hours, check and, if necessary, adjust the tension of the drive belt.
Adjustment of drive belt tension is done by adjusting bolt in the clutch handle body. The belt is tensioned by unscrewing the adjusting bolt. Tighten the adjusting screw, hold it in position and screw the nut 1 to the crank housing (fig 4).8) ( see operating manual)
ATTENTION! Remember that poor or insufficient running-in of the engine and transmission considerably reduces the service life of your power unit.
Maintenance of the Neva MB-1 power tiller
To keep your power tiller in good working condition throughout use and storage you must do the following.
WHEN CARRYING OUT ENGINE MAINTENANCE, CHECK THAT THE OPERATING MANUAL IS IN FULL COMPLIANCE WITH THE INSTRUCTIONS.

Mounted equipment for Neva MB-2 power tiller
the single-axle tractor is convenient and easy to operate and maintain. Working with it does not require special training, but when using specific attached or trailed implements requires certain skills, which you will acquire by following the Instructions for Use of these implements and in the process of further work with them. Manufacturer of “NEVA” power tillers CJSC “Krasny Oktyabr-Neva” is constantly developing and implementing new types of auxiliary equipment designed to expand capabilities of your purchased power tiller.
Use clean, fresh, unleaded gasoline with a shelf life of 30 days or less. Do not mix fuel and oil. It is not recommended to fill the tank with gasoline under the top wall. Leave some free space above the fuel as necessary to provide additional volume during gasoline expansion, which is possible when the power tiller is operated in high positive outdoor temperatures.
MOTOR OIL is graded in two categories: viscosity and quality. The SAE standard classifies oil viscosity grades in units of 0 to 100. Summer oil (e.g. 30, for use at temperatures above 4 0C). Winter oil, (oil viscosity has a “W”, e.g. 10W30), for use at temperatures below 4 0C. API standard classifies oil quality by performance for gasoline engines as: SA, SB, SC, SF, SG, SH, SJ.
The first letter S designates that the oil is used FOR PETROL ENGINES. The initial letter C designates oils for diesel engines. For the designation of universal oils, t.е. those that can be used to lubricate gasoline engines and diesels are double marked, e.g. SF/CC, SG/CD. In all cases, the FARTER the SECOND LINEAR to the END of the ENGLISH ALPHABETH, the LOWER the performance of the oil. Adjust the oil viscosity grade (summer or winter) according to the ambient air temperature when operating your power tiller (see ISO 9001:2008). table).

Gearbox. Mechanical, oil-injected chain-wheel gearbox in aluminum housing. Gearbox parts are lubricated by splashing oil. Gear shafts rotate in ball bearings and plain bearings.
Gearbox enables two forward and one reverse gear. Repositioning of the drive belt in the drive belt grooves on the driving pulley and idler pulley provides a second range of speeds of the gearbox output axles. Four forward and two reverse gears are thus possible.
Clutch mechanism. consists of V-belt, tension pulley with lever, coil return spring, pull rod and control lever located on the steering wheel. As the lever is actuated, the roller moves to create the necessary tension in the drive belt and the rotation from the engine is transferred to the idler pulley in the gearbox.
DM-1-01 engine and its modifications
The single-axle tractor Neva is equipped with an economical engine of 6 liters. с. Use working fuel: gasoline brands AI-80, AI-92 under TU-38.001165-2003. The carburetor is equipped with an air filter that enables easy starting at low temperatures. Automatic decompressor reduces starting force. Stable operation is ensured by contactless electronic ignition.
- crank mechanism;
- gas distribution system;
- fuel engine;
- air supply and elimination of treated gases.
The ignition of the power block is necessary to ensure uninterrupted spark formation in the spark plug.
Before starting the engine, it is necessary to demothball it. The fuel tank is filled with 2 liters of gasoline, the engine is started cold (unheated).
Some users don’t know how to increase revolutions of the crankshaft. Excessive load without warming up the engine causes rapid wear of the piston pairs and consequently leads to their seizure.
Features of the “Neva” MB-3
Gearbox of “Neva-MB-2” motor-block: scheme and device, purpose and rules of operation
Gearbox is an indispensable component of any technique, where the engine is used, because without it it is impossible to transmit rotational motion. Structurally, this element in the “Neva-MB-2” motoblocks is similar to the parts used in other equipment, but to learn more about it, it is necessary to study the issue in more detail.
The design of the motor-block has a gear-chain unit, the main task of which is to transmit rotational motion, and hence to change the rotation frequency of the cutters. Exactly thanks to the gearbox the mechanical action is transferred from the driven pulley to the wheels of equipment, by which the speed and direction are changed.
There is oil inside the housing, which is necessary to ensure the performance of the gearbox. The element is enclosed in a hermetically sealed housing. Its kinematic scheme consists of a chain and two stars located in opposite directions. The lower one is called the slave, because it stands on the shaft and drives the entire motoblock system.
The gearbox of a power block includes the following important parts:
- shift levers;
- Axle halves;
These are not all of the elements that are involved in the construction of the gearbox, but they are the main ones. Failure of one of them leads to loss of performance and subsequent repair.
Compared with the worm gearbox, the chain-wheel gearbox is more reliable. It is convenient and easy to use; it can support the reversing function. As a rule, it is a collapsible construction, where all elements are connected to each other with bolts, thanks to which you can inspect the condition of chains and gears if necessary. These reducers are installed on larger engine blocks that need a strong and durable unit to transmit power to the wheels and tillers.
The easiest and most common cause of failure is a broken or stretched chain, but any user can fix the problem without going to a service center.
What to do
To reduce the risk of damage to your power tiller as little as possible, it is important to check both the engine and the gearbox. Experts give their advice on what the basic requirements should be during operation.
- It is important to use only quality oil and to check regularly the oil level inside the element. According to GOST for the gearbox is ideal for the TAD-17I or an analogue, which is also easily available in stores. TAP-15B.
- The oil change should be carried out after the engine manufacturer’s specified oil change intervals. The instructions for users state that it must be replaced after 30 hours after the first start of the power tiller, and after 150 hours thereafter.
- If a single-axle tractor is put into conservation, all operating fluids are removed from it, and the necessary moving elements are lubricated.
- Periodically the user is required to check the tension in the gearbox chain. If it sags, it is replaced by a new one, as this element can not be repaired.
- The oil seal can be replaced by the operator due to the fact that the machine is completely demountable.
It is worth saying that the reducer from the “Neva-MB-2” motoblock can be repaired quickly and easily. This is possible due to the fact that you can always find spare parts for it on the market. This will be necessary if the following signs appear:
In all these cases, it is necessary to disassemble and inspect the reducer. If oil leaks out, the problem can be solved simply by replacing the oil seal, which may eventually wear out. Jamming is always associated with chain breakage, so this problem can only be eliminated by complete replacement. If this element is intact, but there is no kinematic connection, it is worth paying attention to the sprockets present in the design. One of them may have broken off.
If the gear does not shift, the dryer is inspected, which may be destroyed. Sometimes the threaded part of the handle is cut. If the user began to notice that oil leakage is observed on the shift shaft, it is not always an indicator of failure. Sometimes there is simply an excessive oil level in the gearbox. Excess oil must simply be drained.
Probable breakdowns and repair of the reducer of the motorblock Neva MB-2 and analogues
- Clinks the unit. chain breakage. After unscrewing the unit, a new chain must be installed.
- No communication. The problem is caused by damage to the welded contact between the pinion and the block shaft. Disassembly of the unit, replacement of the shaft will be required.
- No gear engagement. There can be several reasons:
- the performance of the fork brush has deteriorated. after unscrewing the unit, you should replace the element;
- The spring or the unit’s locks are out of order. replace them, make adjustments;
- the settings in the shifting device have changed. after loosening the screws of the board, you need to make the first gear, and then tighten the screws.
The described breakdowns and their causes are the most typical and “popular”. It should be noted, if you can not eliminate the defects with your own hands, then it is better to contact a specialist.
Proper maintenance. long service life
It should be noted that the repair of a motoblock gearbox will not be needed for a very long time, if you fill it up with oil in time, monitor its level, avoid shock loads and carefully operate it. Thus, proper operation is the key to a long life not only for the gearbox, but also for the other elements of the power tiller.
Maintenance of the diesel engine. key points
In order to ensure trouble-free operation of diesel power tillers “Neva”, the manufacturer recommends the following types of engine maintenance work:
- Check oil level, top up or change oil;
- Adjustment of clutch cables;
- inspection of gears;
- check the clutch friction units;
- check and tighten bolts and nuts;
Rear Power Tiller
Before installing the diesel power tiller Neva “on simple” it is necessary to perform the following actions:
Maintenance of the diesel engine filter should be performed after 8-50 hours of operation (depending on the load and the duration of continuous operation).
After 100 hours of work change the oil, clean the oil filter and the oil distributor, and do the lubrication work.
After 500 hours of work done the same actions as during maintenance after the first 50-100 hours of work, in addition remove sludge and dirt from the cylinder cover, oil filter and oil distribution box. The water tank should also be decalcified.
How to decrease the speed of a power tiller
Some models of power tillers may be too fast for certain tasks (plowing virgin and heavy soils); if this is the case, you must reduce the speed.
Without having to change the equipment itself, you can use a reduction gear, which is present on many models. This option allows you to reduce speed without reducing power, allowing you to work the soil more thoroughly.
To reduce speed, you can reduce the diameter of the wheels or replace the gear pair in the wheel gearbox, changing the gears. Usually gears are installed in different sizes, with the number of teeth 61 and 12, to reduce speed, you need to replace them so that the number of teeth on the larger sprocket increases.
