The clutch drum, where the sprocket is located, can be on the inside or outside of the chainsaw body. there is always a cover on the top to protect the moving parts from dirt, sawdust and dust. The clutch itself is a metal disc in the clutch drum. The whole mechanism is mounted on the engine crankshaft with bolts with springs and friction pads at the ends. When the engine speed exceeds a certain value, the centrifugal force exerts a strong pressure on the inside of the drum. Then the sprocket starts to run. the chain saw starts to rotate.

Important: when replacing the drive sprocket, remember that there is a driven sprocket on the bar. It is a good idea to replace both parts at the same time to avoid chain wear and other damage to your chain saw.

A few helpful hints:

  • When replacing the drive pinion, always lubricate the needle bearing;
  • choose a tire and a chain with the same pitch. Otherwise the sprocket on your chainsaw will flatten and quickly become unusable;
  • Watch how the chain saw is cutting. If the chain starts to wedge, lead sideways, the kerf becomes uneven. inspect the sprocket, obviously it is worn and needs to be replaced;
  • Always clean your chainsaw after use. Periodically remove the side cover and remove the sawdust. If it is not, debris will mix with oil and get on the chain and sprocket.

The chainsaw clutch system

Changing a chain saw sprocket

Is there any way to extend the life of an existing sprocket??

  • use more than one chain (preferably three). This method is the gentlest and most convenient for the chainsaw owner in that there is no need to constantly retighten the chain worn by intensive work. Operating three chains alternately will preserve the sprocket’s life and delay its replacement;

When replacing the clutch drum only a certain type of fixture should be used for installation. When replacing the Print Drum (Cylinder) the bearings of the element must be changed at the same time.

To perform the repair work it is necessary to purchase a special repair kit, which contains a driving sprocket and a bearing. After you have purchased the repair kit, prepare the necessary materials and tools for the repair. The basic tools you will need when making repairs are the following:

  • universal wrench that comes with the chainsaw;
  • The piston stopper, can be made of plastic or metal;
  • A special puller of the centrifugal mechanism or the clutch drum.

The work procedure consists of several steps. Each step has its own characteristics, depending on the design features of the chainsaw, but the scheme and sequence of operations is the same for any model of machine.

The sequence of repair work

The first step is disassembling of the saw headset, the guide bar cover is removed. Dismantle guide bar and saw chain after removing cover. Use the universal spanner provided with the machine to unscrew the clutch nut.

After removing the saw chain and guide bar, the air filter is removed. Then the spark plug is disassembled. The previously prepared engine piston retainer is installed in place of the removed spark plug. The stopper allows the piston to be locked in the cylinder and prevents the crankshaft from turning. The clutch should be removed with a puller in the socket of the allen key. All actions should be carried out in a clockwise direction.

After removing the clutch access to the internal parts of the device opens, that is, after removing the clutch you can remove the sprocket.

After removing the clutch drum, depending on the type of clutch drum, inspect and check the pinion and sprocket. Depending on the design of this unit, wear and tear elements are replaced. Special attention should be paid to the centrifugal springs and cams when making repairs. If wear is detected, they must be replaced.

If you can make no problems with the components, put them on the chain saw in the reverse order. First unscrew the piston lock and pull the starter cord out, then put the piston lock in place. This intricate sequence of operations gives you the opportunity to clamp the centrifugal mechanism to the crankshaft of the machine. The clutch is put in place and clamped with the Allen wrench that came with the chainsaw. Wrench clamping should be done counterclockwise.

The last step of the repair work is to install the remaining structural elements.
