How To Use A Puncher Correctly

Additional tool features

In addition to the above, the standard set of options in a modern rock drill include:

  • A ruler to determine the depth of the hole;
  • Lever for fixing the operating position of the start button;
  • The safety clutch stops the motor when the drill gets jammed.

And also in the design of each device there are systems:

  • Dust removal impeller on the engine with a system of dust extraction channels;
  • Vibration damping special springs between the housing and the power unit;
  • Electronic regulation of operation and monitoring of the condition of brushes on the collector of the electric motor.

Reverse

Reverse function allows you to switch the direction of rotation of the chuck in different directions.

Often, when drilling reinforced concrete structures, the drill rests against the reinforcement and enters a clinch with it. In order to release it, a reverse switch is provided, which makes it possible to turn the drill in the opposite direction and continue drilling, bypassing the reinforcement. Usually the reverse button is located directly next to the start button of the unit.

The reverse mode turns the hammer drill into a screwdriver, which can be used to tighten and unscrew bolts, nuts and screws of any size and configuration.

The main operating modes of the punch

Perforators operate in several basic modes, switchable by the operator depending on the work being done.

: Switch the punch modes. Removing the working tool

To remove the drill or bit after work or for replacement, you must:

  1. Wait until the chuck has stopped rotating.
  2. Pull the chuck base down until it stops.
  3. Remove the drill from the chuck.
  4. Release the chuck base.

Drilling

It is performed after switching the regulator to the corresponding mode (drill icon). The overwhelming number of models of rock drills are equipped with a function of a gradual set of revolutions of the working shaft. The speed is controlled using the start button. With a slight pressure, the revolutions from zero smoothly rise higher. When the button is pressed all the way, the revolutions become maximum.

Depending on the material to be drilled, it is recommended to adjust the speed of the drill or drill bit. So, wood products are best drilled at high speeds, metal at low speeds, and concrete or stone at medium.

Most often, a hammer drill is used for drilling stone or concrete. This is due to the fact that the device of the chuck for fastening the drill has a backlash in the longitudinal axis, designed for percussion drilling function. Therefore, when drilling holes in wood or metal, it is not always possible to achieve the desired accuracy. The drill tip may wiggle slightly.

It is recommended to use a chuck with SDS shank for precise drilling of holes. The drill without play is fixed in a chuck, which is inserted into the hammer drill. Jaw chuck included or sold separately. Any holes and materials can be drilled with a replaceable chuck.

Preparation for work

First of all, the removable support handle is installed in a convenient position for work. Then, having set the tool in a vertical position, you need to insert the necessary attachment into it. For this, the cartridge is pushed down. At the same time, the hole in it increases, making it possible to insert the nozzle.

The nozzle rotates slightly until the nubs on its tail end into the corresponding recesses inside the cartridge. When the goal is reached (setting the nozzle in the correct position), a click is heard. It remains to release the cartridge, after which it is automatically installed in place. The hammer drill is ready for use. All operations for replacing and installing attachments must be carried out with the tool turned off. It must be disconnected from the power supply.

When using nozzles intended for use with a drill, a special adapter cartridge should be installed in the perforator, and only then insert a drill, crown or mixing nozzle. When using an adapter chuck, you cannot use the switch that changes the direction of movement and use the drilling under impact mode.

Using the tool in this way can damage the chuck, or even tear it off the tool, which could cause injury. To avoid danger, an impact blocking function is added to the design. It should be enabled when drilling holes in metal, plastic and wood.

Nozzles with thickened shanks must be lubricated with special grease before operation. Grease is applied to the nozzle shank. This operation significantly reduces the wear of the chuck and is especially important when the tool is used in percussion mode. The inside of the drill should also be lubricated periodically. There is a special cap on the instrument for this operation. When it is removed, it becomes possible to access the lubrication mechanism, which can be used as a regular grease.

Punch Controls Capabilities

The perforator is selected depending on the scope of work.

Before using the tool, you should thoroughly understand the functions of the controls. Their location in different models may be different. Therefore, it is worth choosing the option in which they are placed most conveniently, and their purpose is the same for each model.

  1. The trigger is not only for turning the instrument on and off. With its help, the speed of revolutions is regulated, depending on the force of pressing the start button.
  2. The reverse switch sets the direction of rotation of the chuck. When drilling, the switch position should correspond to the clockwise direction.
  3. The mode switch with its help turns on the required operating mode. Fixes three positions for drilling, chiselling and hammer drilling.

Features of work when drilling various materials

If holes are drilled in a material that has a porous and loose structure, to avoid its destruction, work should be performed in a shock-free mode. If necessary, drill a hole in solid material, use liquid cooling special emulsion, machine oil.

When working with hard materials, it is necessary to take breaks from work, the hammer must periodically cool down. If you need to drill a hole of great depth, it is convenient to use a shorter drill at first, and then continue working with a drill of the same diameter, but longer.

Drilling concrete structures requires special care. Almost always, frames made of iron reinforcement are placed inside them, so there is a possibility of drills falling into it. In this case, the drill can be blocked, and the hammer drill may suddenly break out of your hands. To prevent such a situation in modern models of rock drills, the installation of a safety clutch is provided.

The overload clutch prevents the negative consequences of the drill blocking in the valve. However, not all types of punchers are equipped with this device. In the absence of a safety clutch, all measures should be taken to ensure the safety of work; use low rotation speed of the mechanism when drilling reinforced concrete and drill without strong pressure. Do not grip the handles of the tool too tightly to release it immediately if necessary.

How does the work of a puncher begin?

Punch adapters and extensions have different characteristics: power, length, etc.

After installing the necessary attachment on the tool, you can start directly to work. After connecting the punch to the power supply, you must make sure that the mode switch is in the desired position. Then you need to let the tool run for at least a minute without load, at idle speed.

It is important that there are no extraneous sounds during the operation of the gearbox. Smoke and burning odors can also indicate a malfunctioning instrument. If no signs of malfunction are noticed, you can start work in the selected mode.

When selecting the hammer drilling mode (this mode is sometimes called drilling), switch the toggle switch to the position where the drill and hammer symbols are shown above the mark. Then the drill is located in the place where the future hole is marked, and only after that the tool is turned on.

The drill must not be tilted during operation. There is no need to press too hard on the hammer drill, but it should be held firmly in your hands. The hole fills with dust and crumbs during operation, so it should be cleaned periodically. For this purpose, the drill should be removed while the tool is idling. After cleaning the hole, further work will require less effort. The position of the tool cannot be changed during operation.

When working in a shock mode, used when removing an old layer of plaster, ceramic tiles, chipping, the toggle switch should be installed above the mark depicting a hammer. The tool should be firmly held with both hands, and some effort will be required when working. Too much lean on the handles makes no sense, the work will not go faster.

The main parameters for choosing a hammer drill for repair work

For construction work carried out indoors, it is quite enough to purchase a perforator with a power of about 1000 watts. If you need to make a hole in the bearing wall of solid thickness, it is better to use the services of specialists who have a powerful puncher in their arsenal. It is not only unprofitable, but also inconvenient to use a high-power hammer drill when drilling small-diameter holes intended for sockets and switches.

For comfortable work, the main modes of the perforator are required:

  1. A simple drill is used to drill holes in wood and plasterboard walls. When using the appropriate attachment, the rotary hammer can be used as a construction mixer.
  2. Impact drill drills holes in concrete walls.
  3. The jackhammer mode is used when dismantling coatings and chipping channels in walls for laying various types of communications.

Manufacturers usually complete the hammer drill with a special cartridge. Its SDS design allows you to securely attach special bits with a thicker shank with grooves to the tool. The minimum set includes:

  • Drills of several diameters designed for holes in concrete walls;
  • Chisel-bayonet, with the help of which small depressions are hollowed out;
  • Chisel-blade for chasing channels;
  • A nozzle in the form of a regular chuck, with its help a standard drill and a mixing nozzle are attached.

When buying a hammer drill, pay attention to the availability of an additional set of brushes.

Bits such as crowns of various diameters are usually purchased separately. With their help, it is more convenient to drill large holes in walls made of various materials. You need to know that for each of the materials, specialized types of drills and crowns are used.

When purchasing a rotary hammer, it is better to choose a tool that has a removable support handle. Such a perforator can be conveniently operated by people whose working arm is left, since the handle can be fixed in a position convenient for them. Sometimes it may need to be deployed for convenience if it is not easy to get to the place of work.

The safest perforator to work will be a tool in the design of which manufacturers have provided a safety clutch. Its purpose will be discussed a little later. The power cord should be of sufficient length (5-7 m) so that you can do without an extension cord during operation, and also have high-quality insulation. The layout of controls should be convenient.

How to properly prepare for work and use a puncher?

For craftsmen, who are engaged in the repair and decoration of premises, the hammer drill is an indispensable tool. The main reason for its popularity was the possibility of its use for the production of various actions during repairs, for which, in the absence of a punch, several tools are required.

The hammer drill is able to quickly and efficiently drill holes in any materials.

For the correct choice of this versatile tool, everyone who decides to purchase it should know how to use a hammer drill, for what work it can be used, how different models of hammer drills differ from each other. It is especially important to determine what kind of work will be done with the punch.

A high-quality hammer drill, which has a large number of operating modes, is much more convenient to use, and the cost of one, even the most sophisticated tool, will always be less than several, whose functions it can perform.

Although there are many types of rock drills on the market, differing in weight, size and power, they perform virtually the same job. However, if you need to drill a hole of large diameter in a concrete wall, then for a hammer drill of low power such work will be overwhelming.

How to use the puncher correctly in different modes

Expert of category: “Power tool”

Today, no repair is complete without a reliable, proven and irreplaceable tool for some tasks. Puncher. And all because the modern world is aimed at a quick solution to the tasks set. Hammer drill. This is good, and it can partially fulfill some functions, but it will clearly be inferior to the performance and versatility of the hammer drill.

So what is he like and why is he so good? First. This is the ability to use different operating modes of the hammer drill: drilling, hammer drilling, impact (jackhammer). I will decipher it as follows. Drilling mode will allow you to drill all sorts of materials, unscrew / tighten fasteners (bolts, screws, self-tapping screws), in some situations even knead small mortar containers. Drilling with a blow. This is the main function in which it performs well in any work related to concrete, reinforced concrete, brick or stone. And the “jackhammer” mode, depending on the type of device, can be either auxiliary (this often applies to models with a horizontal engine) or permanent. But this only applies to professional equipment with SDS-Max chuck.

Based on this, the work of a puncher can be completely different, but it’s easier to say. Universal. The only thing necessary is to choose the right consumable for the successful completion of the tasks.

Improper use of the rotary hammer as various construction tools can harm it. Therefore, in this article I will talk about how to use a hammer drill in all kinds of modes and not provoke its breakdown. You will learn how to safely use this versatile tool, how to properly maintain it, extending its service life for many years.

Preparatory steps before working with a punch

Before starting any drilling or chiselling work, it is always necessary to add lubricant to the barrel, because during operation a very high friction temperature of metal on metal occurs. And only in the presence of lubricants, you will not have problems with the deformation of the consumable, jamming, or the overall failure of the entire device, so try to always keep the barrel (replaceable cartridge) in perfect condition.

For rotary hammers with a removable base, this procedure is simple:

  1. Remove the cartridge, clean it from dust and dirt with a rag;
  2. Then lubricate the insides of the cartridge;
  3. Then slide the lubricating ring and install the cartridge in place;
  4. Rotate it to fix it as securely as possible;
  5. Loosen the oil ring and block the chuck.

Having done these simple manipulations with the chuck, turn on the hammer drill to idle. And literally 15-20 seconds is enough for the lubricant to disperse to the right places. So you will find out if the device vibrates too much when installing a chisel or drill, if its noise is too high.

What you can do with a hammer drill: acceptable tasks and materials

What types of work the puncher can perform:

  1. Rotary hammer as a screwdriver. To do this, insert a special adapter with a conventional chuck into the SDS chuck, into which a conventional bit and bit holder is installed. But such a design does not make it possible to delicately tighten the screws into soft materials, because the SDS-Plus mount does not have rigidity and it will not work to tighten the screws evenly. In perforators with interchangeable front bases, the cartridge is fixed on the barrel of the perforator. This option has good rigidity and will make it easier to cope with the task at hand. Although, with the dimensions of a puncher, twist the screws. Not the most convenient occupation.

Replaceable base Adapter

  • Perforator for mixing concrete. Here I want to emphasize that the hammer drill is not a drill-mixer, although it has the ability to do this work due to the design of the mechanical part. But in order to prevent the instrument from breaking down, it is recommended to knead, mainly, glue solutions or paints in a small container and only with special whisks. Do not forget that you can do this in drilling mode;
  • For drilling holes in wood. Before using a hammer drill for drilling wood, it is imperative to turn on the drill mode without impact, install the required drill through the adapter and use a low speed. But keep in mind that it will be extremely inconvenient for you to use small drill diameters;
  • Drill the tile using a punch is also possible. But remember, it’s tiled. Material is moody. May crack when pressed hard. Therefore, start carefully, in the drilling mode without impact, from low rpm, gradually increasing the speed;
  • Make a hole in metal. The punch will also cope with this task, because it has no restrictions on possible materials. You just need a special drill for metal. It is crafted from tough steel with added cobalt for strength. On the end it is soldered for hardness. The drill has a spiral shape and a cylindrical shank. Installed only through an adapter.

Tips for using a punch in various modes

I will give you some tips to follow during work:

  1. There is no need to put your whole body on the tool during chiselling or drilling. At this moment, you reduce the stroke of the striker, which in the process leads to overheating in the mechanical part and its faster failure;

This tool is used to work on concrete, brick, stone, metal, and is also used as a conventional drill and jackhammer. They can drill any holes, remove old tiles, break through floors or walls. The hammer drill has an electromechanical or electro-pneumatic impact mechanism. To turn it on, you need to press the button. The main disadvantage of perforators is their considerable weight: there are specimens weighing more than 25 kg. For the convenience of work, you can attach an additional handle made of soft material, this will reduce the intensity of vibration.

Work rules

Before using the rotary hammer, read the attached instructions: this will avoid many errors in operation. Wear safety glasses, ear plugs, gloves. Clothing should be buttoned up to avoid fabric wrap around the drill.

Do not allow the tool to idle, as this leads to premature wear of the mechanisms.
If you are working on a loose material, it is better to do this in the drilling mode without hammering in order to avoid spillage.
When handling solids, use liquid cooling with special emulsions, grease or machine oil.
If you have to drill a hole with a long drill, start with a shorter drill of a suitable size.
To extend the life of consumables, periodically let the rock drill cool down and immerse the drill in water or machine oil. During prolonged operation, the gearbox overheats, it is necessary to allow it to cool completely.
Alternate between rest and tool work: 30 minutes of work followed by 10 minutes of rest.

Operating modes

The vast majority of rock drills have the ability to work in three modes:

Drilling The toggle switch of the tool is placed opposite the mark in the form of a drill. Then you need to put the drill at the desired point and press the power button. Strong pressing on the punch is not allowed in this mode of operation. When chucks are used, the hammer drilling position as well as counterclockwise rotation may break the chuck. To prevent such a situation, the tool has an impact blocking function, it is needed for drilling holes in metal and wood. Before switching on the instrument, be sure to check which mode is set on it.

Hammer drilling or drilling the hammer drill switches to hammer drilling mode (the toggle switch is placed opposite the mark with the hammer and drill). The drill should be positioned where the hole is to be made. During operation, the drill must not be skewed or slipped. The tool is held confidently, with a little pressure on it. Get into a comfortable working position in advance so as not to lose control of the hammer drill when it accidentally bumps into iron reinforcement.

Impact allows you to carry out impact work, chiselling and chiselling. The toggle switch should be above the hammer mark. The tool must be held very firmly, applying some effort so that it does not jump off the right place. No high pressure required.

Punch Care

First of all, you need to pay attention to the lubrication. If you have to work on concrete, you should not save on it. Lubricate the cleaned drill shanks periodically with a grease (such as grease). You can protect the tool from a large amount of construction dust with a shield made from the bottom of a plastic bottle. After turning off the punch, wipe it with a damp soft cloth, having previously moistened it with soapy water. Make sure the air vent is completely free of dirt.

If the tool breaks down, you can only entrust its repair to specialists from the service center. If the perforator in use has high power and strong impact, a preventive inspection by a master will be useful. This will avoid malfunctions that could cause injury.

Impact mechanism

The percussion mechanism in the construction of rock drills is of two types:

  • Electromechanical;
  • Electropneumatic.

The most widespread is the electro-pneumatic version. Drunken (swinging) bearing and piston together make up the hammer hammer mechanism.

When the main shaft rotates, the swinging bearing makes translational movements, transferring the force to the ram of the pneumatic cylinder. The air in the cylinder pushes the piston with the striker. The working part of the chuck is exposed to the impact of the striker, the drill clamped into the chuck hits the material being processed.

How the puncher works and works

In a home craftsman‘s set, you can almost always find a puncher. Replaceable attachments make this tool versatile and indispensable. Let’s take a closer look at what nodes it consists of, and how to work correctly.

Safety clutch

To stop the rotation of the chuck, if the working nozzle is jammed, a safety clutch is installed in the rock drills. This is a necessary element: without its use, a powerful tool turns out of hand, the continuation of the independent rotation of the hammer drill easily leads to injuries to the worker. In rock drills, two main types of clutch devices are used: friction or cam.

  1. Under normal operating conditions of the tool, the discs of the friction clutch are tightly pressed against each other so that the rotational force is transferred to the rest of the mechanism. If rotation is hindered, the discs slide without overloading the drive.
  2. In the cam clutch, both halves of it have beveled projections that fit into the grooves of the counterpart. The half-couplings are connected with a spring of a certain stiffness. If the force on the impact mechanism exceeds the spring pressure, the tabs will protrude from the slots, disengaging the clutch. During this, a characteristic rattle is heard, for which the cam clutch is often called a ratchet.

What the puncher consists of

The controls are located on the body of the tool, as can be seen in the following photo:

The internal structure of the hammer drill cannot be understood without disassembling it. The following main components are hidden in the plastic case:

  • Electric motor;
  • Safety clutch;
  • Drunk bearing;
  • Flying piston;
  • Cartridge.

The principle of operation of the hammer drill consists in converting the rotation of the electric motor into the shock-rotational movement of the nozzles. The electric motor drives the rest of the hammer drill mechanism. The safety clutch ensures the safety of specialists during work. The drunken bearing drives the piston, creating an impact force, and the chuck secures the nozzles. Now let’s talk more about each of these nodes.

Electric motor

Main parts of the electric motor stator and rotor.

The stator windings create a constant electromagnetic field inside which the rotor rotates. There are several windings on the rotor. The leads of the coils are connected to the armature contacts. At the same time, one of the windings is included in the electrical circuit. Power is supplied through graphite brushes to the armature contacts. By switching the windings, a slip field is created, due to which the rotor rotates.

The electric motor in the tool can be horizontal and vertical. The horizontal is usually used in light rock drills, while the medium and high power models are equipped with a vertical electric motor.

The operation of the electric part of the hammer drill is regulated by a trigger mechanism by pressing a button on the handle.

What the tool can do

The following main operating modes of the punch are distinguished:

  • Rotary impact allows you to drill a concrete wall;
  • Impact without rotation to hammer concrete;
  • Rotation without impact with the drill attachment allows you to drill like a drill.

Those who often work with a hammer drill know that in addition to drilling and chiselling walls, such a tool can be used to chisel walls for wiring. Making a slab in concrete using this tool is quite simple. First, a number of holes are drilled along the marked lines. Then, with a lance or a spatula, break the jumpers between the holes. This use of a punch is atypical, but allows you to refuse to purchase additional tools.
