New Kubota Standon Mower

Does anybody own or has anyone demoed the new stand on mower. I am in the market and the kubota dealer is offering a pretty good deal on them right now.

Eric502

they are identical to a bobcat stander, just a different color. I have no direct experience with either model. But I do have a kubota z and I like it quite well, it is my smaller mower with a 48″ deck. no complaints with the mower and Kubota has been a good company for me thus far.

Graverunner68

Thanks for the info. They were pretty good from the Kubota place. I will see if the local Bobcat outfit has something running like that. The 4000 series seems like an upgrade from the older quickcats

The Swamp Fox

I’m in the market for a 52″ stander myself, and just ran across the new Kubota SZ26-52 stander. which apparently first came to market this year. and which I just discovered existed yesterday.

I have the same question as the OP. anyone have experience with this unit or any input on the QOC of Kubota’s decks in general?

  • Tool-less adjustable front reference bar (like the Ferris Z2)
  • Tool-less control lever tracking adjustment
  • 3-position control lever dampening adjustment, allowing the operator to fine-tune controls sensitivity
  • ZT-3600 transaxles rated for 11/4 mph (forward/reverse), making it faster than even the Scag V-ride II
  • Rear Tire Size. 23×10.5-12″
  • Blade Tip Speed. 18,450 RPM
  • HOC Range. 1.5-4.5″
  • Deck trim side bumper
  • Tool-less spindle covers
  • Dash-mounted fuel gauge and hour meter

I think the only thing that would scare me from this mower would be the operator control station. Many reviews talk about how ‘short’ the control station is which often results in back fatigue.

Mudly

in my humble but accurate opinion I know enough to be dangerous. so if we don’t do it twice we don’t do it at all.

RedSox4Life

Will probably be buying a new stander next year and seriously considering the Kubota.

Landscape maintenance. 23 years experience, 16 as owner/operator/babysitter

You have my attention. I’ve come up largely empty myself when trying to find actual user reviews for Kubota’s SZ-series stander lineup. Where were you able to dig some up?

The most helpful review I’ve found to date was a detailed YouTube video of a Kubota SZ19-36 by an LCO located in Texas. The author enjoys trialing new equipment, and has experience running Walker mowers in addition to a Ferris Z2 48″, amongst others. He does a good job of providing a detailed overview of the machine.

The aforementioned LCO has uploaded several videos comparing the Ferris SRS Z2 48″ to the Kubota SZ19-36 stander. In this video, he covers some specific differences between the two as well as who ACTUALLY makes the Kubota SZ-series. I found it helpful, hopefully others following this thread will as well.

douglee25

The documentation about back fatigue has mainly been on the Bobcat and the Bradley. Reviews are plentiful on here and YouTube. Because all three are similar if not almost identical in design, I can only assume the Kubota would be no different from a fatigue standpoint.

The Swamp Fox

I managed to get my hands on a Kubota SZ26-52 demo unit with the Kawasaki FT-730V EFI engine over the weekend. Unfortunately, we’ve been hit with an uncharacteristically early snow-storm as of this morning, putting all of the grass / leaves I’ve been leaving uncut in my yard for the purpose of this demo under several inches of fresh powder.

The ontrols interface / operator station is incredibly well-designed, you can tell a lot of intelligent design choices went into this machine.

If you want to know anything specific about the Kubota stander sans cut quality, let me know and I’ll do my best to oblige!

Graverunner68

I’m curious about how it handles hills and makes tight turns? I mow older cemeteries and use Wright mowers now. They handle well on the hills and turn. They have a lower center of gravity. But my wright mowers are older and slower. Sometimes that top speed would be nice for the open parts.

The Swamp Fox

Well the snow hasn’t stopped yet, and we’re now at about 10″ and counting. Forecast indicating it likely won’t melt off for over a week.

Demo agreement called for the return of the Kubota prior to that, so I trailered the unit back last night before the blade tips had so much as kissed the grass. Let’s just say I won’t be forgetting that drive any time soon!

In the day or two that I did have the machine, I was able to test general handling (excluding hillsides) and went over machine construction and serviceability with a fine tooth comb.

  • Engine. Kawasaki FX730V-EFI (V-twin 4-stroke, OHV, air-cooled)
  • Transaxles. Dual Hydro-Gear ZT-3600’s, rated for 11 mph/4 mph (forward/reverse)
  • Drive Tires. Litefoot 23×10.5-12 (4-ply)
  • Front Casters. 13×6.5-6/3.25 (semi-pneumatic)
  • Fuel Tank Capacity. 6.5 gal.
  • Weight. 997 lb. w/full fuel tank
  • Deck Anti-Scalp Wheels. (3) front, (1) rear
  • Deck Blade Tip Speed. 18,450 FPM
  • Deck Discharge Opening Width. 11.5″
  • Deck Cut Width. 52.5″
  • Deck Width. 53.88″/66.38″ (chute up/down)
  • Deck HOC Adjustment Range. 1.5-4.5″, adjustable in.25″ increments
  • Deck Construction. Full floating design; 10-gauge steel top w/7-ga. side skirts
  • Deck Spindles. Top mounted w/sealed bearings, 1″ shafts, aluminum housings

A few items of note on the left side of the machine. exhaust vents to the trim side of the machine, plastic bumper on trim side of deck, toolless spindle covers, left-hand gas tank fill cap.

The silver allen-keys on either side of the operator platform are the hydro releases. Fenders enable weight-bearing for situations requiring extreme traction.

The operator platform itself is very roomy. I measured the I.D. at 25 3/16″ wide x 13 1/2″ deep. It features an anti-slip coating, a handle for easy lift / lowering, and cutouts in the front corners to enable water runoff.

The platform latch is the small black L-shaped piece next to the right fender. Latching / unlatching the platform is virtually effortless. The machine can be operated in walk-behind mode, since the operator presence safety switch is in the left handle.

Platform suspension consists of rubber shock-dampening mounts in both front corners between the platform and the frame.

Operator control station, featuring hour meter and idiot lights on the left. Key and PTO easy to reach and operate. The centrally-mounted fuel gauge is easy to read when standing on the machine.

However, it’s important to know that the fuel gauge will indicate empty if the key is in the off position, since it is electronically-controlled. Fooled me on the way home, I stopped to fill up, only to find the tank already full.

The throttle control is a unique dial-adjust mechanism that enables really smooth micro-adjustments. I really like the recommended PTO engage zone labeling, as this differs for many machines. Hat tip to Kubota for eliminating any grey area here.

The three-position lever on the right serves two different functions. setting the parking brake and controlling transaxle high/low speed, designated as “Transport” and “Cut” modes. At first I thought this an unnecessary complication, as I found upon testing that the PTO does engage in both modes. However, a quick perusal of the Owner’s Manual revealed that the “Cut” speed selection. which maxes out at 6.5 mph. is the fastest recommended speed for the best quality of cut.

It appears this was Kubota‘s attempt to idiot-proof cut quality issues attributable to speed too fast for conditions. Since you can still cut in “Transport” mode at the full 11 mph, I think they managed to pull this off without unduly hampering the operator.

The span or “throw” from the transaxle control levers to the front reference bar is adjustable to match the desired top-end speed at “full sticks”, and is a welcome feature for those with small hands or fingers.

The front reference bar adjustment mechanism is operated by a dial on the front of the operator tower.

View behind the operator cushion, which is tethered and pops completely off of the machine for ease of access. Tube contains engine and owner’s manuals. Overview to be continued in additional posts below due to number-of-photo limitations.

The Swamp Fox

View from behind the operator cushion. The centrally mounted fuel tank and battery should give the machine a nice low center of gravity and good traction, although I was unable to test on any hills or slopes.

For those interested, there is no OEM fuel shutoff on the line from the tank to the engine, and there is only a single combined hydro fluid reservoir.

The two spring-loaded knobs you see in the upper left and right corners constitute another neat feature. toolless hydro tracking adjustment.

Yet another user-customizable setting offered by Kubota. three-position control stiffness / dampening adjustment for each hydro. This can be accessed by removing the panel over the engine side of the operator tower.

The plastic discharge chute retaining nuts can be tightened to the point that they hold the chute in the up position during operation while still enabling it to be lowered by hand. However, the discharge chute design causes it to stick out past the wheelbase in the up position, as shown.

Discharge side of the machine with HOC adjustment mechanism.

The HOC adjustment pin system was easy to operate and change heights, as Kubota elected to go with a U-shaped pin retaining mechanism rather than the infamous spring-loaded ball at the end of the pin.

kubota, stand, mower

The 52″ deck has three anti-scalp wheels across the leading edge, each with three different height adjustments. A single, centered anti-scalp wheel supports the back edge of the deck.

The deck discharge opening measures 11.5″ at its widest point, making it narrower than that of Scag’s Velocity Plus (17″), Ferris’s iCD (16″) and even Gravely’s X-Factor II (13″).

There are two adjustable baffles or “skirts” along the leading edge of the deck, one on either side. Per the Owner’s Manual. “Southern season grasses generally will work with the lip down. When cutting Bahia grass or other grasses where seed pods grow higher then the actual grass blade, you will want to adjust the lip all the way up. Northern season grasses generally require the lip all of the way down.

Underside of deck as viewed from the discharge opening. Note the distance between the cutting chambers and the V-nose of the deck.

The Swamp Fox

View of cutting chamber from under trim side of deck.

Engine top view. Panel on front of operator tower can be removed for sake of maintenance / ease of access.

Front of engine. Oil dipstick, filter, drain hose, and fuel filter are by far in the most accessible location of any of the stander’s I’ve recently demo’d, including the Ferris SRS Z2, Scag V-Ride II, and Gravely Pro-Stance.

Top-of-deck access for belt changes is made problematic by how low-slung and far out the muffler and its accompanying heat shield project from the engine. There is a toolless knob just in front of the engine, but the top plate requires a socket or wrench to remove the retaining nut on either side positioned in front of the grease zerk.

First Impressions Summary While my inability to extensively drive and mow with the Kubota SZ26-52 leave me still in need of another demo come spring, first impressions of build quality and overall design are very favorable.

The machine has the best top-end speed on the market, besting the Scag V-Ride II’s 10.5 mph. The 23×10.5-12 rear tires combined with the centrally-mounted and low-slung fuel tank and battery should make for good traction and balance.

Small aspects of the design such as the adjustment mechanisms for the control lever stiffness, tracking, and reference bar should mean the machine will fit a wide range of user size and preferences. The adjustability factor extends to the anti-scalp wheels with three adjustable positions and the adjustable baffles under the deck.

Features like the easily visible fuel gauge, recommended PTO engagement zone, maximum recommended speed for best QOC, easily removable operator cushion, on-board owner’s manual storage, and a bumper on the trim side of the deck make the machine user-friendly and somewhat idiot-proof.

The operator control station was laid out very well and the platform was wide with plenty of room. I was comfortable in the short amount of time I was on the machine.

Ease of maintenance seems superb, with thought and planning that went into this aspect. The Owner’s Manual is helpful and well thought-out, with illustrations and answers to logical questions included for each topic.

  • 11.5″ wide discharge opening may result in clumping issues in wet or tall grass
  • HOC range of 1.5″-4.5″ in.25″ increments tops out a bit shorter than some
  • Max fuel capacity is only 6.5 gallons
  • Exhaust emits to the trim side of machine
  • Top-of-deck access difficult due to exhaust
  • Chute Deflector sticks out past wheelbase, even when up
  • Only one rear anti-scalp wheel
  • Deck height adjusted via chain hangers
