Stas Trimmer How To Make The Right Choice

Welcome all!

I continue to talk about decision-making techniques.

At last article we talked about how to make the right choice with the help of Descartes Square.

Today we will study this method in more detail.

For a specific example, we will see how to make a choice between two or more equivalent options using cross-matching.

Cross-matching method: application rules

Case study and step by step instructions

Descartes Square for decision making:

Application rules

In fact, everything is technically simple, but not just psychologically. Have to move your brains a little and delve into yourself.

We’ll have to compare the answers and evaluate the different options for a possible development of events.

So, the first thing to do is to clearly state your problem. For example: “I can’t make a decision: take a vacation in July or in October?”.

The correct and accurate formulation of the problem is very important, since it already contains grains of its solution.

On the contrary, a vague and ambiguous definition of a problem sows seeds of doubt and poor choice.

You can get acquainted with the problem formulation techniques. Here and here.

After you have identified the problem, you need to take sheet A4 and a pen, draw the same square with 4 fields, as shown in the example below, and in each of them give answers to the relevant questions.

Here key application rules technology under consideration:

  1. Answers should be at least 4, preferably 6-8.

In general, the more answers, the better the situation is analyzed, studied from different angles, the different consequences and possible variants of the course of events are determined more effectively.

  1. When formulating answers, it is necessary to take into account the influence of hidden emotions, thoughts and motives.
  2. Do not rush, the exercise can be performed in several stages and stretched for several days.

Next, with a specific example, consider how this technique works.

For this, with the kind permission of one of my clients, I will take the very difficult decision-making situation in which he once found himself.

Obviously, I do this while maintaining complete confidentiality.

The Man We Will Call AT., For a very long time I was tormented by the question:

How to make a choice between two, at that time seemed to him equivalent, options: open a business or remain an ordinary employee?

Over, in order to open a business, it was necessary to move to another city. But his family was categorically against it. And on this basis sharp family quarrels and conflicts.

Case Study

With step by step instructions

So, for starters, we along with AT. Clearly identified the problem.

Step 1. Problem statement

“Should I leave my employment, move to another city and start my own business, or not do this and stay in my hometown?”

Then they wrote out a row clarifying issues:

  • If I decide that yes, I need to quit hiring, open my own business and leave, then what positive and negative consequences will this decision have?
  • What will happen if that happens?
  • What will happen if it does not happen?
  • What will I get and what will I not get from this decision?
  • How to make the right choice?

Step 2. Answers to questions

Further, AT. Gave answers to 4 key questions of this technique. Here they are. For now, do not pay attention to the numbers highlighted in red and to the additions after step 4.

Stas Trimmer How To Make The Right Choice

In fact, already at this stage of the application of technology for AT. A lot fell into place and cleared up.After all, he was able to see at least 33 possible consequences from the adoption or non-adoption of this decision. What gave him a lot to understand and realize. (This is to the question of how to predict the future)

But we continued to work on his problem using the Descartes Square technique for making decisions.

Step 3. Evaluation and comparison of each possible election

Each consequence (that is, what I get and what I don’t get) from the decision made or not taken was evaluated AT. On a 5-point scale. The results of their assessment are shown in brackets, and the sum of the results of the assessment in the rows of the score table is (-1) and (4) (up to step 4).

As we can see, a comparison of the received scores shows that the choice is more likely to be made in favor of a positive decision: “quit your job, move and start your own business.”

But AT. While hesitating and showing concern.

The fact is that the difference between the results is not very large, and the motives for and against are very close to each other, which makes it difficult to make a decision.

Step 4. Search and formulation of hidden thoughts, emotions and motives

Now, if we compare the upper-right and lower-left squares, we can determine that hidden answers and motives are hidden behind some answers to the questions posed.

It is appropriate to ask the question: “What is behind the answers 3 and 4 to the third question:“ What will I lose if I do not make this decision? ” and 2 to 2: “What will I get if I make this decision?”?

What will actually lose AT. (in this case, it is more appropriate to say “with what remains”) if he refuses the decision to leave and to open his own business?

And these very issues allowed V. To look deeper into his inner world.

You probably already guessed that behind the fear of losing the opportunity to increase interest in life and craving for new things.

And also for the desire to get a sense of risk and life drive and motivation for new achievements.

This is boredom, the most terrible boredom, which from time to time peeped from the depths of the soul AT. This is poisoning with the everyday monotony of life, when at times it seems that, in fact, your life is not your life.

This man found himself in a situation where changes are so vital for him that if they do not come in the very near future, then the soul will be terminally ill.

About this in the article:

Yes, here we touch upon the so-called existential section of human life, its deep-seated feelings associated with the development of our personality and its renewal in the second half of life.

Each of us has a powerful motive that pushes us to actualize internal resources, to develop ourselves and grow.

In some people, it is so strong that it turns into a compelling impulse of life, which is extremely undesirable and even dangerous to resist.

Otherwise, you will eke out a living among the shadows of everyday life.

Awareness of these motives allowed AT. Add to your answers a couple of points that greatly increased the weight of the positive decision (14 vs. 6).

The end result AT. Decided to quit his job and start his own business, and together with his family he left for another city.

Of course, I had to go through many tests, including tests on the strength of family relationships. But now they are doing well and, I hope, will always be so.

So, we see that the Descartes Square technique for making decisions is quite effective.

If you do not know how to make the right choice and how to make a choice between two or more equivalent solutions, then its application will allow you to solve these problems.

See you in the next publication.

The area around a private house requires constant care, including regular cutting of overgrown grass. A trimmer or lawn mower is a great alternative to a large and expensive lawn mower. Let us consider in more detail the main features of these two tools, their differences, advantages and disadvantages, in order to determine which tool is suitable for which tasks.

What is the difference

Trimmer and lawn mowing tools are very similar in appearance. Over, many manufacturers attribute the lawnmow to one of the varieties of trimmers. Nevertheless, these are fundamentally different devices that have many significant differences. The main ones are:

  • Cutting elements. Knives-disks or cord are installed in the lawn mower, the trimmer is equipped with fishing line.
  • Destination The trimmer is designed to cut grass, small vegetation and thin bushes, while lawn mowing is a more serious task. It easily copes with dense vegetation, shrubs and young trees.
  • Power and performance. The trimmer is powered by a battery or an electrical network, therefore it does not have a lot of power and can only service a small area. Lawn mowers are equipped with a gasoline engine, so much more powerful, can work longer and serve a large area.
  • Weight and ease of use. The trimmer is light. Its weight is only about 3 kg, this allows you to use it for a long time to a person of any gender and age. The standard weight of the lawn mowers is at least 7 kg, so using it is much harder.

As a result, it turns out that both of these tools are very different and suitable for different tasks. The trimmer is a light, low-power and purely household appliance suitable for simple tasks and capable of processing small areas. Lawn mowing is a more serious tool, it is distinguished by high power and productivity, it can process large areas with dense vegetation.

Advantages and disadvantages of the trimmer

Before giving preference to the trimmer, it is important to consider in more detail all the pros and cons of this tool.

Among its advantages are the following:

  • Light weight and compactness. Working with it requires minimal effort;
  • Environmental friendliness. Working from electricity, the tool does not produce harmful emissions;
  • Excellent work in hard-to-reach places. On uneven surfaces, along fences and borders;
  • Low noise level. You cannot call it completely silent, but it is much quieter than other similar tools.

In addition to the positive qualities of the device, there are several disadvantages:

  • Dependent on electricity, often requires the use of an additional extension cord;
  • Low-power, copes only with light vegetation;
  • Heats up quickly, requires breaks to cool the motor.

Advantages and disadvantages of lawn mowing

Lawn mowing is a serious and expensive tool, therefore it is also important to study all its pros and cons before buying.

Among the advantages are the following:

  • Lack of wire, mobility and independence from the power grid. Runs on gasoline;
  • High power. Copes with dense thickets, bushes, trees;
  • Productivity. Works for a long time, serves a large area.

The disadvantages include the following features of the tool:

  • Big weight. Working with it requires a lot of energy;
  • Exhaust fumes inhaled by a person working with him;
  • The need for constant refueling;
  • High noise level.

Lawn mowing is a powerful and productive tool, however, these advantages balance the significant disadvantages that not every gardener wants to put up with.

How to make a choice

When choosing between these two devices, you first need to think about the following points:

  • Physical abilities of people who will use the tool;
  • The complexity of the terrain to be cultivated;
  • The availability of electricity;
  • The degree of vegetation density on the site.

If the tool will be used only for domestic purposes to cut grass in the yard, then, of course, it is better to choose a less expensive, light, low noise and practical trimmer.

If you need a tool for more serious tasks in processing large areas, covered not only with grass, but also with large plants and shrubs, then a powerful and productive lawn mower will better cope with this task.
