What Tires Can Be Cut Tread

The wheel has come down

The corresponding draft law was prepared by the Department of Traffic Safety of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia. It was developed on behalf of the President, which indicated the need to establish uniform requirements in the regulatory legal acts of the Government in terms of the use of automobile tires in the operation of vehicles.

It can be assumed that the whole problem was in the Gazelles. The fact is that in the rules of the road, in particular in the provisions on admission to the operation of vehicles, it is prescribed that the tires of passenger cars have a residual height of the tread pattern of less than 1.6 mm, of trucks. 1 mm, buses. 2 mm, motorcycles and mopeds. 0.8 mm.

Gazelle, as well as Korean Porter, category B cars. Their maximum weight does not exceed 3.5 tons. That is, the tread depth should be 1.6 mm. However, for all other parameters. these are trucks. They are designed for the transport of goods. That is, they can roll tires up to one millimeter.?

According to the requirements of the technical regulations on the safety of wheeled vehicles in Russia, according to the requirements of the same regulations of the Customs Union. they remain trucks. Category N1. vehicles intended for the carriage of goods having a maximum mass not exceeding 3.5 tons.

In general, everything is very complicated with the classification of vehicles. What, for example, are pickups? They also belong to category N1 in both international and Russian qualifications, despite the fact that many of them can be managed with an open category “B” in the rights. Here, cars are already divided according to their functionality. By the way, many pickup trucks are prohibited from entering the city center without an appropriate permit: the carrying capacity is over a ton. Many of them can be controlled with a category “C” in the rights. their maximum weight is more than 3.5 tons.

Now, in accordance with the instructions of the President, the Ministry of Internal Affairs decided to indicate the depths of the treads for each vehicle. For vehicles of category L. these are all mopeds, motorbikes, mokiki, as well as motorcycles, scooters and even tricycles and quads. residual tread depth is set at least 0.8 mm.

For vehicles of categories N2, N3, O3, O4. these are trucks and trailers, the maximum weight of which is over 3.5 tons. 1.0 mm.

For vehicles of categories M1, N1, O1, O2. these are cars, as well as trucks, the maximum mass of which is not more than 3.5 tons, as well as trailers for them, which also do not exceed this mass. 1.6 mm.

For vehicles of categories M2, M3. these are buses, that is, all buses with more than eight passenger seats. 2.0 mm.

For the first time in the Basic Provisions on the admission of vehicles to operation, the requirements for winter tires are spelled out and it is explained which tires are considered as such.

The residual tread depth of winter tires intended for operation on an icy or snow-covered road surface during operation on the specified surface is not more than four mm. Please note that we are talking specifically about their use on a snowy or icy area.

Winter tires are marked with a mountain peak with three peaks and a snowflake inside it, as well as MS, MS and MS. If the tire has wear indicators, then you do not need to measure the tread depth with a caliper.

What penalties will be provided for this? not yet known. It is clear that tires that do not meet these requirements will not pass the inspection.

It is not yet clear whether there will be penalties on the roads. As the traffic police told us, first you need to enter requirements, and then think about fines.

How to choose the right tires for your car

K9 RC OK: HOW TO: Cutting tread on scale tires, 2.2 RC4WD Mudslingers

We have already figured out how to choose the right wheels for a car. Now our task is to select tires. The markings on the sidewall of the tires are, perhaps, no less than the parameters of the wheel, but in general it is a little easier to choose a tire. Find out what numbers like “185/70 R14 88H” mean and how to deal with them.

You need to choose the right tire for a disc with the specified parameters or a specific car.

When choosing tires, you need to consider the following parameters:

  • seasonality;
  • type of protector;
  • tire construction type. tube or tubeless;
  • type of cord construction;
  • mounting (or landing) diameter;
  • tire width;
  • profile height;
  • load index;
  • speed index.

However, if you continue to read, then it has already become clear to you that in fact the above list of parameters is quickly reduced to two or three points, since most of them are obvious or subjective characteristics. Let’s go in order.

Seasonality is an obvious parameter: at the time of choosing a rubber, you perfectly understand whether you need winter or summer tires. The issue of choosing the so-called “all-season” rubber and its applicability in the conditions of year-round operation is a topic for a separate conversation, as well as the choice of mud or “universal”. It is only worth mentioning here that winter tires must be marked with a snowflake icon or the letters “MS” or “M.S”.

In general, the tread pattern is symmetrical or asymmetrical, as well as directional or non-directional. Symmetrical non-directional tread is the simplest basic type of tread: these tires are the most common and inexpensive. The directionality of the tread primarily increases its ability to effectively drain water from the contact patch. this reduces the risk of aquaplaning. Well, the asymmetric tread pattern is designed to combine good water drainage and directional stability. The issue of choosing a projector pattern also deserves a separate discussion.

By design, tires are designed for use with or without a tube. However, in modern conditions, the question of choosing a tire design is practically predetermined: almost all modern passenger tires are tubeless. Such tires are marked with the inscription “Tubeless” (which means “tubeless”) or “TL”.

The type of cord construction. the power section of the tire, its “skeleton”. is also a characteristic that does not require much attention when choosing modern tires: almost all of them today are radial. This fact is indicated by the very letter “R” in the tire marking: for example, the mark “185/70 R 14 88 H” means that this is a radial tire with a rim diameter of 14 inches, and not a “radius” of 14 inches, as is often mistakenly said. think.

This is also a simple parameter if you already have rims for which you are choosing tires: the rim diameter of the tire must be the same as the rim diameter. If you choose rims with tires, you need to clarify in the owner’s manual what diameter rims are acceptable for use on your model, and only then select tires of the same size for them.

Tire width is the first numerical index reflected in the tire marking. It is indicated in millimeters: the tire 185/70 R 14 has a width of 185 millimeters. This is perhaps the first parameter from our list that can vary when choosing a tire for a particular wheel or car.

The point here is that the disc can also have different widths, and the bus must sit on the disc correctly. Too narrow a tire will sit on the disk like a “house”, which is unacceptable due to the high risk of spontaneous disassembly, and too wide. “mushroom”, which is also unacceptable. Certain areas of tuning like stance consider the landing of a “house” to be beautiful and make it a separate styling element, but from the point of view of civil exploitation it is not justified and incorrect.

Each car model has several options for the diameter of the disc and the size of the rubber, suitable for use. All these options, recommended by the manufacturer, are listed in the car’s manual: from these data, and it is worth choosing. In turn, a disc of a certain width has several valid tire options. Here, the choice should be made depending on the desired characteristics.

First, a wider rubber tends to provide a larger contact patch and thus better grip. Secondly, given the same diameter, tires with a larger width have a smaller profile. we’ll talk about it below. Thirdly, wider tires have a higher mass, which will slightly affect vehicle dynamics and fuel consumption. And fourthly, as the width of the tires grows, their propensity to aquaplaning grows. In addition, tires of different widths have different end sizes. Therefore, the width of the tires must be selected taking into account the manufacturer’s allowable range and the desired characteristics.

Profile height, or series. the second index, reflected in the tire marking. It is indicated as a percentage of the tire width: that is, it is the ratio of the height of the section to the width in percentage. For example, a 185/70 R 14 88 H tire has a section height of 70% of its width. It is not difficult to calculate the height in millimeters: you need to multiply the width by the profile and divide by 100. for our tires this figure is 129.5 millimeters.

The section height affects the performance of the tire. First, the higher profile provides better comfort and puncture resistance. Lower profile tires, accordingly, better transfer the road profile to the suspension and body, and are also more prone to damage when hitting defects in the road surface. Secondly, a lower profile provides better handling, and a higher one, on the contrary, provides a greater “roll” of the car. Thirdly, as mentioned above, given the same diameter, tires of larger width have a smaller profile. this must be taken into account when choosing in accordance with the desired characteristics.

Load index is a parameter that reflects the maximum permissible load on a tire during its operation. It is denoted by a digital index, it is indicated after the geometric parameters of the tire: for example, our conditional tire 185/70 R 14 88 H has a load index of 88. The decoding of the index can be found in the table provided by the tire manufacturer. in our case, index 88 means a permissible load of 560 kilograms. When choosing tires, it should be borne in mind that the maximum permissible vehicle weight, respectively, should not exceed the maximum load indicator, multiplied by 4. according to the number of tires on the car.

The speed index is a parameter that reflects the maximum allowable speed at which the tire maintains its performance characteristics. This is an alphabetic index, the decoding of which also needs to be clarified in the table provided by the manufacturer. Tires of the same diameter can have a different speed index depending on other parameters. width, profile, rubber composition and, accordingly, price. If the parameter of the maximum permissible operating speed is important to you, then you need to choose tires of a high price category with the best consumer qualities.

When grooving is not allowed?

Rubber for passenger cars (with the exception of specially marked rubber) cannot be restored. And that’s why:

  • Passenger car tires do not have an additional layer of rubber. Going deeper into it with a cutter, you can easily damage the cord. After that, the wheel will become unusable and cannot be repaired. The idea to make winter rubber out of summer rubber can end in a wheel explosion and an accident.
  • Even with a cut tread, a tire that has gone out of its life will not remain as soft and supple as it used to be. Cracks and red spots on the side surfaces are a clear sign of the end of its service.

Tire damage: here are some things you can (and can’t) fix yourself

Tire tread cutting

It is important to understand that such an event as cutting the tread of passenger tires or tires on trucks gives the driver several undeniable advantages at once. First of all, the tire mileage increases by about 30%. This is due to the fact that the abrasion of the rubber layer after cutting is much slower than the same process on new tires.

It is also worth noting that the grooved tire has less rolling resistance. Accordingly, it makes it possible to save on fuel. Typically, consumption is reduced by about 10-15%. Traction and chain characteristics of the car are also significantly improved, thanks to which the car moves on a snow-covered or ice-covered road as comfortable as possible.

Many people think that there will be no re-slicing. But it must be remembered that there is such a procedure as surfacing, after which cutting can be carried out. Only the car owner can judge whether it is necessary to perform such operations or whether it is better to purchase new tires.

Slicing process

The do-it-yourself tire tread machine is a very easy-to-use tool. It only takes a little skill. We take a tire that can be restored and proceed:

  • We study rubber. Make sure it has the required markings (Regroovable or U). Then, using the slicing indicators, we determine whether it is necessary to carry out the procedure.
  • If necessary, we remove the rubber from the disc and thoroughly clean it from dirt, sand and stones. We inspect the product from the inside: there should be no damage. Otherwise, the tire can only be restored in the tire service.
  • Find the most worn part of the pattern and measure the tread depth. If the rubber is worn unevenly, then we will strive to ensure that the depth indicator is the same everywhere. at least 3 mm.
  • We take a machine for cutting a tire tread and install a cutter on it that matches the width of the pattern.

Tire tread cutting with a machine

When the tread pattern begins to fade from the surface of the tire, the car enthusiast wonders if the wheel will last for the season. There is a miraculous way to extend the life of worn tires with tire tread grooves.

Types of tire tread cutters

The tread can be cut on both cars and trucks. Today there are many options for homemade cutters, however, experts recommend abandoning them and using only certified tools. For tire treading, the range of cutters is represented by a huge assortment from simple ones with a limited number of blades to “advanced” ones with numerous functions. Several models are worth considering:

  • S125B. German regrover machine, one of the simplest and quite high quality. Applicable to work with lightweight tires only.
  • S146B. Also a representative of German production, however, with a large set of functions. Such a device is equipped with a special thermal sensor, as well as a toroidal transformer, which significantly increases labor productivity. Cutting truck tires is easy with this cutter.
  • Rubber Cut RC400 TipTop. German manufacturer TipTop presents its regrover machine that provides fast and accurate slicing.

It should be noted that when choosing a cutting machine, it is necessary to give preference to proven and high-quality brands. The price for them will be slightly higher than similar cutters, however, quality and safety are above all.

How to determine if your tires can be grooved and the tread groove technology

Please note that the groove of the tire tread (tread groove) is the tire manufacturer’s procedure for extending the life of special vehicle tires. This service is very widespread in Europe, but in Russia it is just gaining popularity. Therefore, SkyTech does not recommend turning to artisanal carvers, since skill and the highest precision are extremely important in this process. Be sure to pay attention to the labeling from the manufacturer Regroovable. This inscription is usually located on the side of the tire and means that this type of tire provides that the tread can be cut. Tire tread cutting is an increase in grooves and tread channels by removing a small layer of rubber without reducing its basic properties. The result is achieved due to the specifics of tire design. at the development stage, a “gap” of several millimeters is provided, which allows you to deepen the tread without losing the strength and integrity of the coating.
Not only new tires, but also remanufactured tires can be cut, the main requirement is a special marking that allows such manipulations. If your tire has a U badge or Regroovable inscription, then you can safely contact SkyTech for a similar service. It is not worth experimenting. cutting rubber on a forklift is a responsible task and making indentations on your own, without experience and skills, is not only unreasonable, but also unsafe. An improperly processed tire can lead to irreparable consequences at any time.

Tread cutting. new life of old rubber

How to potentially increase tire mileage, reduce fuel consumption, and thereby reduce financial costs are issues of constant concern to motorists and tire manufacturers. These issues are especially relevant in the case of truck tires. When developing new models, engineers of various tire companies increasingly include the possibility of cutting a tire tread. Cutting the tread is one of the surest ways to extend tire life and save money. We have already written about cutting on the pages of our magazine and once again we want to remind you of the basic rules and stages of this process.

Slicing benefits

  • Increase in tire mileage by 20-30% of the mileage of a new tire. This is because on a long distance truck, the wear rate of a new tire is twice that of the one that reaches the wear indicator. The wear rate decreases with the wear itself. That is why the deepening of the tread of a worn tire by only 3-4 mm can significantly increase mileage.
  • Reduced fuel consumption. If we compare a new tire with a tire that has reached the groove indicators (residual depth 2-3 mm), then a more worn tire shows less deformation of the tread rubber, heats up less and, as a result, has less rolling resistance, and thus consumes less fuel. On a straight road, the rolling resistance of a new tire can be taken as 100%, then for a tire that has reached the wear indicator, it will be only 75%. Between these extremes, the rolling resistance is proportional to the residual tread depth (tread wear). A pre-cut tire operates with the lowest rolling resistance and therefore the lowest fuel consumption throughout its life.
  • Improving the traction and grip properties of the vehicle. Cutting restores edge sharpness and tread depth to 6–8 mm, which allows the car to move more confidently and safer on wet or slippery roads.
  • Re-repairing a chopped tire. After the cut tire is worn out, you can restore the tread by welding and repeat the cutting procedure, thereby once again postponing the purchase of new rubber.

Tread groove basics

The essence of the cutting operation is to remove part of the existing rubber layer, that is, deepening the channels and grooves of the tread.

To do this, already at the design stage, tire manufacturers put a layer of rubber in the tread structure (highlighted in blue in Fig. 1), intended for subsequent high-quality cutting without reducing the strength properties of the tire and its integrity.

Both new and retreaded truck tires can be cut. The main thing is that on the sidewall there is a corresponding marking “U” or “Regroovable”, informing that cutting of this tire is allowed. Often, “craftsmen” cut tires that are not at all intended for this procedure. You should not go on risky experiments, subjecting ordinary tires to cutting. On the road, the consequences of such experiments can be unpredictable and dangerous.

The slicing process is quite simple. To begin with, the tire is dismantled from the disk, checked for damage to the tread, sidewalls and sides. Next, remove all unnecessary objects (stones, carnations, etc.) that could have gotten into the tread grooves. If necessary, the tire is repaired.

The cutting parameters must be determined individually for each type of tread and size. In the catalogs of truck tires of almost any tire manufacturer, for each model that can be cut, a cutting map is provided (see examples in Fig. 2). It indicates the depth and width at which it is permissible to cut. Experts recommend that the residual tread depth of the tire before cutting is at least 3mm.

It is very important to choose the correct cutting blade depth. Tread depth measurements before cutting should be taken around the tire circumference in several places in order to determine the actual minimum tread depth. And then set the tool cutter to a depth equal to the sum of the minimum residual tread depth and the maximum cutting depth recommended by the manufacturer’s catalog for this tire.

Many tires have built-in tread depth indicators (see Fig. 1) that not only indicate when it’s time to groove, but also help you determine the correct cutting depth.

Particular attention should be paid to a tire with traces of uneven tread wear.

If the tire is unevenly worn, you can only cut the worn section if the groove marks are still visible. Make sure that the residual rubber thickness between the deepest cutting point and the steel jacket is at least 2–3 mm.

After finishing the cutting process, make sure that the tire is not damaged and that the straps of the belt are not exposed.

Slicing equipment

The modern market offers a fairly wide range of tread cutting machines powered by the network: from cheaper Chinese (about UAH 2,500) to expensive European and American (on average, from UAH 4,000 and above).

Each such apparatus is supplied with a set of knives of different lengths, which, depending on the shape and width of the blade, are designated by numbers from 1 to 6 and are divided in shape into rounded and trapezoidal.

What the law says

Most European countries are very loyal to slicing. Even in Germany, which is famous for its restrictions, it is forbidden to put chopped tires only on the front axle of buses. Freight and bus carriers operating in European countries need to know the national regulations of each country on the itinerary regarding the use of chopped tires in order to avoid claims from the local traffic police. For example, for the European Union countries, you can use the ETRTO (European Tire and Rim Technical Organization) directory, which contains some national regulations restricting the use of tires, as well as links to regulatory documents.

In the table, we summarize the legal requirements for tire cutting in different European countries.

I would like to say that tread cutting is a painstaking process that requires special skills, which should be entrusted only to a good specialist who knows the technology of its implementation in accordance with the recommendations of the manufacturers.

Advantages and disadvantages of the procedure

There are certain pros and cons of using this procedure, which you should definitely pay attention to.

Among the main poles are the following.

  • A significant increase in service life. In some cases, due to the incorrect execution of the procedure, certain problems may arise. For this reason, you must strictly follow the rules that will be presented below.
  • Significant reduction in fuel consumption. With a good tire, it is possible to save up to a quarter of the fuel used, which is certainly very important. The tread depth and width must be selected individually.
  • There is, in fact, only one minus. This is a rather dangerous movement in such a car. Wheels with a road surface must be made especially well. This is especially true for trucks.

The main purpose of the tire tread

The primary role of tire treading is to maximize the performance of the tires themselves. There are circumstances when buying new tires is not possible. However, there is a way out of this situation, and it is quite simple and not too expensive. Basically, the groove on the tread is nothing more than a special pattern that significantly improves traction. Among other things, you need to understand that protectors are cut in specialized companies, however, you can perform this procedure, including at home.

When the tread is properly grooved, the grip is significantly improved, even on difficult terrain. It should be understood that this procedure is only possible in certain situations. If your rubber is too worn out, then such a procedure will help you for a short period of time.

Which tires should be cut

This procedure is performed primarily on trucks. Cutting of all-metal tires is made, made with an additional layer of rubber and a specialized reinforced frame. On a passenger car, this procedure will not work for the reason that an additional layer on the rubber simply does not exist.

It is possible to perform the cutting procedure if the tire has a special regroovable marking. It is worth operating the tread on trucks until the moment when you can change old tires for new ones.

DIY car tire tread cutting

Quite often it happens that even a fairly frayed and bald rubber can serve as faith and truth for some period. It’s worth noting that grooving your tires is the only way to slightly extend the life of your already worn rubber. It is imperative to follow certain rules and features in order to perform this procedure as correctly and reliably as possible.

How to cut tires with your own hands

If used correctly, a truck tire can last for at least a couple of years. You need to understand that cutting should be done only if the depth is already less than 1.6 millimeters. The slicing process is simple enough.

Before performing this procedure, you need to select the required depth. The work should be done by the regruver. Cutting is carried out exclusively on the old tracks, there is no need to invent something new. Also, the tread depth must comply with the regulations.

Slicing technology

Truck cutting should be done on tires without significant abrasion of the rubber. A high-quality result is possible if the correct design specifics are used. A gap of a few millimeters is required, which can allow the tread to deepen without too much trouble.

The tread is cut not only on new tires, but also on used ones.

Is it possible to cut a tread

The use of grooved tires is only possible if permitted by the manufacturer. This procedure is very popular throughout Europe, but in Russia it is just beginning to gain popularity. It is for this reason that it is extremely important to contact only experienced specialists who are ready to perform such a procedure as efficiently and reliably as possible, while at an affordable price.

Among other things, in order to get the highest quality result, you need to use a tire slicer.

How To Determine If Your Tires Can Be Chopped! (SPECIALLY FOR SKEPTICS)

Pay attention to the fact that cutting the tread of tires (deepening of the tread), or simply cutting rubber, as this service is called among us among the people, is a PROCEDURE PROVIDED BY THE TIRE MANUFACTURER to extend the service life of truck tires. This service is very common in Europe, but in Russia it is only gaining popularity. Therefore, we do not recommend contacting handicraft carvers, because here skill and the highest precision are important. Do not forget that the standard tire pressure of 22.5 radius starts at 8 atmospheres. Even a couple of extra millimeters deep will reduce the life of your tire. Be sure to pay attention to the marking from the manufacturer REGROOVABLE. This inscription is usually located on the side of the tire and means that this type of tire provides for cutting of the tire tread. Our truck tire changer employs masters with vast experience, we have cut more than a thousand tires. and not a single dissatisfied client! If you are tired of riding bald tires, contact our truck tire service and we will cut a new tread for you.

Most often, rubber grooves are suitable for truck tires from R-17.5 to R-22.5, as well as solid tires for loaders. Slicing solid tires is another story altogether.

cutting mud and swamp tires for 4 × 4 off-road vehicles.

This service is very popular in pokatushki lovers’ circles. Mud mixers constantly compete with each other in the cross-country ability of their cars, driving into absolutely impassable places. These cars are specially prepared, and their tires are special. There are a lot of cutting options. There are tires already created by the manufacturer, like mud and swamp tires. On them, we simply remove some of the sipes or parts of them to improve the quality of adhesion. We deliberately leave wide gaps in some places to make it harder for dirt to fill the gaps between the sipes, making the tire smooth and reducing grip. In addition, there are many different tires that are made like 4×4 jeep tires, but don’t have deep enough tread and a special pattern for really tight dirt. You can buy them much cheaper, but it will be a little more expensive to cut them, tk. there is a really laborious work ahead. For some, it is possible to remove some of the old tread, which will create a new, deeper pattern on the tire. Some of them are generally re-cut. In general, as you already understood, cutting “mud” rubber is a creative business. And we can cut the protector according to your sketches and wishes, and according to our own recommendations and experience. Do not hesitate to call us, send photos of your mud tires, and we will advise you absolutely free of charge. How to contact us can be found in the CONTACTS section.

Cutting the tread of truck tires.

The most commonly cut tires are R22.5, although there are also smaller tires for which the manufacturer provides for the tread depth. If you are in doubt whether it is possible to cut your tires, call us and the master carver will advise you absolutely free of charge. Please note that ONLY CARGO tires are to be cut. The manufacturer of such tires provides for this procedure, applies additional layers of rubber and strengthens the tire carcass. We write about this here because the service of cutting passenger tires has become popular in Russia, and many services do not hesitate to do this. Also, almost all salons and outbids of used cars cut passenger tires in order to give a cheap gloss to the car being sold. Never do this. it is life threatening. The car tire manufacturer does not provide for this procedure. Such a tire can burst on any bump or stone. Especially at high speed. In addition, pre-cut passenger tires are not subject to balancing. Do not save on your safety, if your passenger tire is worn out. buy a new one.

Tire tread cutting

Stages of cutting tire tread

Rubber cutting services start with tire removal and thorough inspection. They look not only at the permissive marking, but also at the condition of the rubber. work continues only if there is no damage not only to the tread itself, but also to other parts. the bead, sidewall.

The next step is to remove all foreign objects from the grooves (trapped stones, nails) or, if necessary, repair work is carried out.

The master must definitely determine which cutting parameters should be used in relation to your rubber, the scheme is selected, the depth and width of the channels are determined. It is worth paying attention to the residual depth. if it is less than 3 millimeters, then it is unlikely that repair and restoration work will be carried out.

The depth of the blade is determined by the minimum permissible depth of the canaliculus and only after that the cutting is started.

The main categories of tires to be cut or which tires are to be cut:

All cut tires can be divided into 3 main groups. These are truck tires from R-16C to R-22.5, solid tires for loaders and special equipment, and the so-called mud and swamp tires for 4 × 4 off-road vehicles.

Reasons and benefits of grooved tread

Cutting the tread groove is a relatively new service for our market (it implies deepening the wheel tread to the technical layer).

CUTTING EXTENSES THE LIFE OF YOUR WHEEL BY 1-2 SEASONS

We decided to provide this service due to the fact that there is a demand for this service.

The reasons why it makes sense to cut the tread:

  • You don’t need to search and buy wheels
  • Solution of your question as soon as possible up to 2 hours
  • In winter, the wheels, after light and quick revision, literally bite into the asphalt (relevant for
  • minibuses and heavy transport)
  • During the summer period, it is relevant during heavy rains (the throughput of a new summer wheel is 33 liters of water at a speed of 80 km / h), drifts are significantly reduced.

The cutting of the tire itself. a simple process that can save you a lot of money, as well as significantly improve the quality of the most important element of the car wheel. Considering the affordable for our services, we can assume that you “acquire” calm nerves and safety on the road on very favorable terms.

TREAD CUTTING

Tread cutting: working method

There are several approaches to tread cutting. This is the implementation of this process in the factory in a hot or cold way and the use of the so-called regenerator in service stations or small workshops. Let us dwell on these methods in more detail. If we are talking about cutting the tread on an industrial scale, then it happens like this:

  • The tire’s suitability for further use is evaluated. Masters visually assess the degree of wear, the presence of severe damage to the frame, side parts. With the help of laser diagnostics, internal defects are determined. Specimens of tires completely unsuitable for cutting are being recycled.
  • Cutting off old tread and repairing damage. The cutter erases the top layer of rubber, the sides are slightly processed. The irregularities are smoothed, the cracks are filled with a product, which then hardens and makes the tire whole again. A compound is applied to the tire for better adhesion.
  • Cutting rubber using hot vulcanization or cold approach. In the first case, the surface is wrapped with a rubber band. The tire is immersed in a matrix with an elevated temperature, the walls of which have a future tread pattern. In the cold method, wet rubber is pre-applied and rolled. The tire is placed in an envelope, where the layers are spliced and the protectors are cut.

Another way: using equipment for cutting tire tread. regruver or its analogs. The device has replaceable attachments of various shapes. They heat up during operation and make indentations in the rubber of the desired shape, length and size. However, such a device is used only on special tires, which allow cutting the tread without harming this wheel element.

Cons of cutting the tread with a regruver

Many are very skeptical about this method of slicing, since there are some disadvantages in it:

  • After cutting the rubber in this way, the tire can no longer be restored, since only about 2 millimeters remain to the metal cord. After the next erasure, you will have to change it completely.
  • If you use equipment for retreading tires in models that are not intended for this, especially summer ones, this leads to an increase in the fragility of the tire and makes it vulnerable to various damages.

On the other hand, this is a great way to thin out the tread for better grip on different surfaces, apply a new tread pattern in case of repair by means of rubber melting.

Tread cutting in Kiev

It is not uncommon for tires to wear out during operation. Buy new ones. quite a costly business. Therefore, the service of restoring the tread pattern by cutting it is becoming more and more popular. Usually, the restoration takes place quickly enough and is done with high quality. In Kiev, many companies are engaged in the restoration of rubber. Let’s dwell on the process of tread cutting: what does this procedure give??

What is a tread thread?

Usually a tire consists of a carcass, a steel part and a rubber itself with grooves. During operation, the protectors are erased almost completely, which makes the use more difficult and even unsafe, since there is no necessary adhesion to the ground. Rubber groove makes the tire look like new.

In the process of providing repair work, the grooves in the tire are restored by additional cutting to the technical layer. This ensures safe traction with the ground, so that the tires do not slip and even at high vehicle speeds, you do not have to worry about sudden drifts on the road. In addition, grooving will extend the tread life by about a few more seasons before these wheel elements have to be completely replaced. Many drivers and car owners are sometimes unaware of the fact that you can seriously save on buying new tires by just updating the old ones. Tread cutting service. this is a real salvation for those who are tired of paying more than necessary.

Tread cutting: advantages of working with our company

Our company is engaged in working with elements of cars at a professional level. We provide only high quality services for a reasonable price. We bring to your attention a few key points why you should entrust us with cutting a tread pattern in Kiev. We always adhere to 4 tread cutting rules:

  • Only those wheels with a factory-laid technical backing layer of at least 1.5 mm are subject to cutting
  • Longitudinal drainage channels must be perfectly flat for good water drainage
  • Wheels should be technically in perfect shape, without ghoul cuts of a knocked out checker and, if possible, with smooth edges
  • Saving the tread pattern

In addition, all manipulations are carried out using new modern equipment and professional specialists in their field. We strive to get the job done as best we can and on time. We work only with light truck wheels and light tires for jeeps up to 75 kilograms.

So, the tire cutting service is gaining more and more popularity. It allows you to save money and restore the original appearance of the wheel, extend the service life by one or even several seasons.

Why cut a tire tread?

So, back to the main topic of the article. All that we wrote to you above is not just idle curiosity, this is one of the completely legal ways to extend the life of tires on a car. Using the tread groove, you can extend the service life, or rather the mileage, by 20-25 percent. Agree, not bad, given that tires are not so cheap, especially truck tires. Here, another opinion may also arise, why actually cut the tread again. If there is a reserve, then you can simply drive on these tires until they wear off to the tire cutting indicator. However, this opinion is criminal, because in such cases the tire will resemble a slick profile, that is, it will have a maximum contact area with asphalt, but however, any ingress of dirt or water will lead to aquaplaning, which means loss of control. The liquid medium will not be squeezed out into the grooves, and then from under the tire, as a result, it is possible that there will be some kind of lubricant between the tire and the asphalt. As we said, this is fraught with skidding, slipping, loss of control. That is why if the protector is worn out, then there are only two options. Either restore it, or change the tire to a new one. You shouldn’t just neglect this fact.

The process of cutting, retreading the tire

We did not tell you anything about the equipment, but we will not. Our article is not about this, and is for informational purposes only. We do not think that you will go for such a device, since this is done at the service station, and they do not need our stories. Let’s say very briefly that, in fact, the cutting machine is something like a wood burner, where the cutters change, and the cutter itself is sharpened and warmed up during operation.

So, a cutter is selected along the tread profile, which we will cut and install in the clamps.

In this case, the height, or rather the depth of the cut, is set according to the template. the caliber. After that, the cutter is fixed with fasteners. Turn on the device and let it warm up.

Then we cut in the direction of the tread groove, which we want to restore. In this case, the set of the cutting depth occurs automatically, due to the fact that the platform. the limiter does not allow cutting more than what is set. In this case, the platform itself must be driven along the surface of the tread, pressing it all the way.

So, over and over again, groove by groove, and a new tread is cut. After cutting, it may be necessary to remove the rubber with your hands, but this is easy to do. The cut groove is simply removed from the tire and that’s it.

Slicing tires with a groover, is it possible and safe!?

Many people have the opportunity and desire to save at least something and at least on something. In some cases, this is affected by the general financial situation, and someone saves on the principle of a koshchei, sort of because he is just a curmudgeon in itself. Is our economy always justified and isn’t the proverb that the miser pays twice if you try to save on tire cutting !? Rather, on the contrary, on cutting them again and not buying new ones! This is what we will talk about and try to give answers in our article.

But first, before we talk about the cutting process and how and when it all appeared, let’s take a look at the typical tire design by layers in order to understand how much the surface layers can be weakened so as not to lose strength, and as a result, safety. After all, it is the safety issue that is most relevant when cutting a tire, which is a matter of course. After all, cutting off its layers leads to the fact that the stiffness of the tire and its strength change, but not for the better.

Tread stock for cutting it or which tires can be cut and which cannot

There is no point in describing all the layers and their purpose in the tire design, everything is already perfectly clear that when cutting a tire we are only interested in the tread. Its thickness is even more precise, because cutting will be done precisely due to it.

That is, in addition to the general idea of the structure, we need to know about the thickness of the layers, in particular of the tread. Let’s say right away, and we will show in the photo that a passenger tire simply does not have such a stock. Take a look at the cross section of a passenger car tire.
Between the most recessed point of the tread and its residual layer to the cord, only 1-2 mm.

You yourself understand that we are not talking about cutting grooves on such a tire. If you cut the tread in this case, then there is no doubt about the tire rupture during its operation, especially provided that the cords are cut. If this happens at speed, then you yourself understand what such savings as cutting a tire tread will lead to. It is here that the opinion arises that the tread groove is for those who are “tired of living”. Indeed, cutting car tires is not possible. And it’s not worth experimenting here.
However, not everything is as critical as it seems. Let’s say even more, there are tires that can and even need to be cut, that is, to restore the tread by forming new grooves. These are truck and so-called industrial tires. The key factor that will allow you to cut the tread grooves to the additional depth will be the increased thickness of the rubber layer of the tread. This is what will allow you to cut grooves again. Typically, these tires are marked. regroovable. Anyone who knows even a little English can easily guess that in fact this word hides three others (repair, groove, ability). Kind of like the ability to restore tread grooves.

That is, even the manufacturer has laid such a possibility, which means that in this case, when cutting the tread on such tires, everything will be fine.

The only thing is that you must comply with some conditions. They are again obvious and simple:

This is, if I can say a short list of recommendations, but in order for you to understand what, how and how much, it is better to familiarize yourself with the cutting process in pictures. Then you will not only hear and read, but also see for yourself, and most likely understand how to properly cut (restore) grooves on the tire tread.

Summing up on tire tread cutting

Summarizing the information on tire treading, we can say that this is not just an unreasonable and risky economy, but a normal and pragmatic behavior. This procedure allows you to extend the life of the tires, while it is quite “legal”. If everything is done according to the recommendations and without violating the technology, then the tires will last longer and their characteristics will not suffer. This only says one thing, that cutting tires is good and justified, but if someone says that it is not permissible, then such people simply do not have complete information about which tires can be cut and how to do it correctly.

If cut. then only in compliance with the technology

If there is no alternative to cutting for some reason, make sure that your Service Partner performs this operation strictly according to the technological chart of the tire manufacturer. otherwise, the performance characteristics of the cut tire may critically not correspond to the operating conditions!

The only currently relevant and dominant document that establishes the norms for the use of tires in general and tires remanufactured by the cutting method in the Russian Federation is the “Technical Regulations on the Safety of Wheeled Vehicles”. In Appendix No. 7 of this document there is a single phrase that defines the rules for the use of chopped tires. According to subparagraph 5.3.5, on tractor trucks, it is permissible to use chopped tires on driving and suspended axles (rear and middle), on trailers and semi-trailers. on all axles, on buses (and trolleybuses). only on the rear, driving axles.

Professionals do not recommend using chopped tires in winter.
In Russian operating conditions, when working in contact with an aggressive environment (sand-salt mixture used as a reagent for deicing), in the event of even minimal tire damage, the rate of cord destruction due to active corrosion increases sharply.

However, the first measure to increase mileage for an extremely worn high-end tire will be rebuilding, since the carcass has the appropriate value and will provide increased tire life.

Truck wheel cutting

  • This is a technological operation, which is correctly called “deepening of the tread pattern” and consists in shearing off part of the tread layer of the tire.

Unlike passenger tires, manufacturers provide for the possibility of cutting for commercial tires, as evidenced by the REGROOVABLE marking on the sidewall of the tire.

Deepening (cutting) of the tread pattern is carried out with a special tool (an electrically heated knife) by cutting off a part of the tread layer of rubber. The process is carried out according to the catalogs of tire manufacturers, where the cutting parameters and the cutting pattern are indicated, which almost never repeats the previous one in all elements.

When to cut tires?

  • All tire manufacturers have different recommendations. But based on our more than ten years of experience in operating and servicing hundreds of truck tires in domestic road conditions, we recommend that this operation be performed as close as possible to the final end of tire life. The fact is that cutting increases the mileage of a tire by a maximum of 50-80 thousand kilometers, and the cost is 4-7% of the cost of a new tire.

But since the under-tread layer becomes thinner during cutting, the tire becomes more vulnerable to damage. On our roads, this leads to the fact that the actual service life will increase by no more than 50 thousand kilometers. In this case, the tire carcass is in 90% of cases unsuitable for further use (restoration). Often, retailers are obviously reluctant to undertake retreading of such tires, referring to possible hidden defects.

Slicing tires, being a relatively inexpensive and quick way to increase tire mileage, is fairly common. Opponents of truck tire cutting fall into two categories. The former refuse to cut because of the warning about the deterioration of the characteristics of the truck tire after it. The latter, recognizing in principle the admissibility of cutting tires, do not use it due to the fact that many companies engaged in cold tire restoration do not accept cut tires. In fact, both arguments are based on one reason: the fear of poor-quality cutting, and not cutting in general. Indeed, if even small sections of the tire breakers (in common parlance, cord) are exposed during cutting, the tire becomes unsuitable for further operation. If tires, for example, Michelin, are cut correctly and at least 2-3 mm is left from the level of the “bottom” of the deep tread of the tire to the upper belt layer, then such tires are absolutely safe and suitable for both hot and cold retreading.

We extend the life of truck tires. cutting and welding. What to choose?

In difficult conditions for freight carriers, the one who makes every effort to reduce their costs survives. One of the ways to significantly reduce costs is the use of modern methods of extending the life of the wheel. In this article, we will look at two main methods aimed at increasing the mileage of a truck tire: cutting and rebuilding (welding) a truck tire.

Service Line services:

Restoration of truck tires (welding)

Tire retreading is a method of 2 or even 3-fold extension of the service life of a truck tire by welding a new tread layer (tape, ring) onto a worn tire.

In Western Europe and the United States, retreaded tires account for over 50 percent of the total truck tire market. According to statistics, 4/5 of European companies providing transport services buy exactly reconditioned tires, and these are not the poorest companies. In China, 8 out of 10 suitable tires are reconditioned, which is justified: the production of a new tire in terms of crude oil costs 80 liters, and the restoration of the same tire. only 7 liters.!

In Russia, no more than 10 percent of commercial tires are being restored so far. Market potential. on the face.

What tires can be cut?

You can cut technically sound tires that have:

  • REGROOVABLE marking
  • Remaining tread depth of at least 2.0 mm.

Michelin Retread. Factory Restore

Michelin is one of the pioneers in the market for retreaded truck tires in Russia: a leader in technology, product quality and service.

Michelin Multi-Life model. a real way to reduce operating costs by reusing the carcass of the truck tire. The effectiveness of using the Michelin Multi-Life model can be easily calculated using the cost per kilometer (CKP) indicators.

Cost per kilometer (UPC)

Formula UPC = (New Michelin Tire Cost Michelin Retread Cost)

To use the model, the following steps are required:

  • Purchase a new Michelin truck tire and fit it to your vehicle.
  • Operate this tire to a residual tread depth of 2-3 mm and remove it from service.
  • Return a worn-out tire (carcass) to any authorized Michelin dealer and in return purchase a Michelin Retread retreaded tire, the cost of which is almost two times lower than a new tire.

When a retreaded Michelin Retread tire is completely worn out, calculate the cost per kilometer using the above formula. And you will see that despite the initially high cost of a Michelin tire, the cost of 1 km is one of the lowest. of course, only when carrying out the above measures to extend its life.

The retreading technology used is cold welding of truck tires. With this method of welding, the temperature at which the vulcanization process takes place is much lower, which avoids the negative effect of temperature on the tire carcass.

It is the cold welding method that is most often used for retreading tires.

Another advantage of cold rubber restoration is the ability to carry out such an operation more than once. But applying cold welding will not work endlessly either. Typically, this restoration operation can be carried out two, maximum three times, and then only in close to ideal operating conditions (European or American roads). And then the tire must be recycled.
