Which gasoline a STIHL chain saw runs on

Alternative fuel option

For residential and professional chainsaws it is recommended to use gasoline without alcoholic components and additives. motor gasoline AI-92.

The question of whether you can pour 95 gasoline in a chainsaw is still debatable. Theoretically, the anti-detonation properties of gasoline AI-95 are higher than those of standard fuel AI-92, but in practice it is better to give preference to the second option.

The problem is that in order to improve the anti-detonation properties in the composition of the 95th gasoline manufacturers and sellers introduce additives, the quality and effectiveness of which raise reasonable doubts among experts.

Such fuel does not fully meet the required characteristics, does not have the proper stability during long-term storage. After 3 to 4 months of durability its performance deteriorates by 25-30%.

What kind of gasoline to use with a STIHL chain saw?

Chainsaw resource, as well as the performance depends on the quality of gasoline you fill. Many people neglect it, considering this question to be of secondary importance and fill up the saw with whatever they can find: 92, 95, 98 and even dirty and expired! The result is that your tool breaks down and has to be repaired. In this article, let’s break down the importance of using the right gasoline in a chainsaw!

How long does the fuel last?

During long-term storage, gasoline evaporates (regardless of brand), sediment falls out at the bottom, it loses its properties, in other words. deteriorates. You should know that it is not gasoline that catches fire, but its vapors. So if you have a can of gasoline in the garage from last year, then think about whether it is worth it? Better leave it to light a barbecue fire.

The use of “stale” gasoline for a chain saw entails a lot of problems:

It is worth remembering that the prepared fuel mixture (gasoline and oil) is stored for no more than one month, after which time it should be disposed of.

Using an old mixture increases wear and tear on your chainsaw’s engine. don’t forget that! All this will soon lead to a costly gasoline chain saw repair, at best the carburetor, at worst the engine.

What octane number to use. 92, 95 or 98??

Here’s where the fun part comes in. Is it possible to fill up a chainsaw with 95octane gasoline?? In all chainsaw user manuals the manufacturers specify in bold letters: “Do not use gasoline of octane number higher than 92 to prepare the fuel mixture”. It’s understandable, but apparently not for everyone.к. chainsaws with a burned-out cylinder are brought in to service centers time after time!

Let’s find out what kind of gasoline is good to put in a chainsaw, and what kind is not! For all two-stroke engines you have to use 92 gasoline, that’s what the tool is designed for.

Pouring 95 gasoline, the engine will start detonation (pushing the piston in the opposite direction), something like a micro shock, which will occur almost at every revolution of the crankshaft. About 98 gasoline I think everything is clear, the effect will be even stronger, and it will already be mini strokes.

For reference! Did you know that fuel should not always be prepared in the ratio of 1:50?? It turns out that the ratio can be 1:40 and even 1:25. From what it depends and when to choose the right ratio, read our detailed article-guide about the proportions of oil and gasoline for chainsaws of all brands.

Why You Shouldn’t Pour Dirty?

Some chain saw owners are confident that if the tool is working in constant dust (there is even an air compensator in the carburetor in case of a clogged air filter), it means that it is able and gasoline with pieces of rust to swallow and the chain lubrication waste with small pieces of metal will go, so?

It’s another common misconception, never use petrol from the bottom of the canister (especially rusty). The chainsaw has a carburetor, which has shallow channels that can clog from these small particles, which in turn will lead to a breakdown of the chainsaw and turn to a specialized workshop.

Can You Use E10 Unleaded Fuel In Your STIHL Chainsaws And Small Engines?

If there’s no way out, you urgently need gasoline, and you only have a “rusty canister of liquid” at hand, make a filter from a very fine mesh, such as gauze, and filter it before refueling.

We also recommend an interesting article on what oil to use for the chain saw engine and its chain (here you will find many arguments why used oil should not be used).

To keep your chain saw for many years, never fill it with old gasoline, and do not use the brand 95 or even 98 gasoline to prepare the fuel mixture, only 92. Also, don’t forget about the purity of the gasoline. no odinka!

STIHL chain saw carburetor adjustment

Adjust your chainsaw’s carburetor if the engine becomes unstable or if there is a sudden increase in fuel consumption and exhaust emissions.

To adjust the carburetor on your STIHL chain saw, follow this sequence:

  • First of all you should turn clockwise those 2 screws marked with the letters H and L on the chainsaw with the engine turned off. After that both of these screws should be slowly turned one by one one one full turn in the opposite direction;
  • Next you need to quickly start the STIHL chainsaw and warm it up. As soon as the tool body becomes warm, pull the throttle trigger and, by turning the H screw, achieve the engine speed of 14000 rpm. Do not hold the throttle lever down for more than 10 seconds;
  • Then start turning the LA bolt one after the other until the chain stops rotating on the bar. Then the LA bolt must be turned a quarter turn in the opposite direction.

STIHL chain saw motor must finally be shut off and restarted. If at low speeds the engine is unsteady, then you need to slowly turn the screw L against the clock hand. Then turn the LA bolt to a position where the idle speed of the engine is 2,800 rpm.

What brand of engine oil to use?

For each model, the manufacturer advises a list of materials to use. It is better for the user to adhere to these recommendations, because tool failure due to improper fuel and lubricant material is not covered by the warranty. In this case, the owner himself pays for the repair of the chainsaw, which can be up to 80% of its value. When you can’t follow the manufacturer’s recommendations, try to follow these rules:

which, gasoline, stihl, chain
  • Only use oil designed for two-stroke engines.
  • Do not use after the expiration date.
  • Do not add used oil with a large amount of impurity to gasoline, t. к. the mechanisms of the tool can be damaged.
  • Chain lubricant should not be used for the fuel mixture.
  • It is preferable to use synthetic and semi-synthetic oils, which are more expensive than mineral oils but do not form harmful deposits.

Dirty Gasoline

Some owners of chainsaws believe that if the tool is working in constant dust (in the carburetor is even a compensator for the air in case of clogged air filter), it means that the ability and gasoline with pieces of rust to swallow and the chain lubrication waste with small pieces of metal will go, so?

This is another common misconception, never use gasoline from the bottom of the canister (especially rusty). The chainsaw has a carburetor, in which there are small channels that can clog from these small particles, which in turn will lead to a breakdown of the chainsaw and a call to a specialized repair shop.

If there is no way out, urgently need gasoline, and only a “rusty can of liquid” at hand, make a filter out of very fine mesh and filter it out before refueling. Where to Get a Fine Mesh? Stock up at a hardware store, it always comes in handy in a private household.

What octane number to use. 92, 95 or 98??

Here begins the most interesting part. Can a chainsaw be fueled with 95 gasoline? In all chainsaw user manuals the manufacturers specify in bold letters: “Do not use gasoline of octane number higher than 92 to prepare the fuel mixture”. It is understandable, but apparently not everyone, t.к. Every once in a while, service centers get chainsaws with burnt cylinders!

Let’s understand what kind of gasoline is good to put in a chainsaw, and what kind is not! For all two-stroke engines you should use 92 gasoline, that’s what the tool is designed for.

which, gasoline, stihl, chain

When filling up with gasoline of the 95th rating, detonation (push of the piston backwards) will start in the engine, something like a micro shock, which will happen almost at every crankshaft revolution. I think it’s clear about the 98 gasoline, the effect will be even stronger, and it will already be a mini-strike.

What kind of gasoline you should fill your chainsaw with

Hello! I am glad to see you again, dear readers and subscribers of the Blog Andrey Noak. Everyone who has a chainsaw at home already knows exactly what kind of gasoline and how to fill it up. But to the one, who only wants to buy such a unit, the article will seem entertaining.

A chainsaw is one of the most convenient and versatile appliances. You have to prepare the fuel mixture before use. But in order for the unit to work properly, you need to follow all the manufacturer‘s recommendations. Each model is different, so what gasoline to fill a chainsaw?

Choosing the right chainsaw

Today I will tell you about the process of choosing the right chainsaw. There is a lot of information and various articles on the Internet on the topics: how to choose a chainsaw?, Which chainsaw is better?? etc. Basically all these articles are very superficial and give only the most general ideas about the choice of a chainsaw. I will try to go into more detail on each of the stages of the choice, to give technical specifications, to refer to the facts, in order to clearly prove my point. Below I will give my personal rating of household chainsaws, based on reliability (failure rate), price (tied to the dollar), price/quality ratio.

Can I mix different colors and brands of oil??

It is not recommended to mix oils of different brands. First, they can be made on different, incompatible bases. synthetic, semi-synthetic, mineral. Second, different brand oils may have different additives. How they can react chemically with each other and what the result will be is impossible to predict.

The main thing is that there is no reason to do it. It is more rational to pour the leftover oil of the same brand into the gasoline and work out the mixture. And then start using a different oil.

Note the labels, these are 3 different STIHL oils, all different, both in characteristics and color. They can not be mixed with each other, as the manufacturer himself writes in his instructions
