Electric motor. Rock drills are equipped with vertical and horizontal motors. Horizontal (straight) models are lighter and more compact. Convenient for working in confined spaces. Their main disadvantages are poor cooling and exposure to increased shock loads.

Anti-vibration system. It dampens the vibration energy of the instrument. There are 2 types. passive and active (AVS). Active. represented by a combination of counterweight and spring. Installed on a professional instrument.

Additional vibration damping is provided by a handle attached to the body by a spring and a hinge. The passive system consists of anti-vibration pads. They are located on the body and handles.

Control scheme. Needed to control the engine speed. There are different types. Typically this is a variable force trigger or dial. Professional models are equipped with a different circuit: it provides the same engine speed regardless of the load.

Body material. The hammer drill body is made of metal and shockproof plastic. The metal is more durable, characterized by increased thermal conductivity. Therefore, in the area of ​​the engine and working mechanism, the body is metal. Lining is made of plastic to protect against hot metal and the part of the body in which the wiring with controls is located.

Safety clutch. Disconnects the chuck from the shaft when the drill gets jammed. Protects the engine from overheating. Prevents injuries that can result from a sudden stop of the tool. Manufacturers use 2 types of clutches. friction and spring-cam.

Friction clutch. consists of 2 discs that transmit rotational energy to the chuck. At the moment of jamming, they slip and disconnect the shaft from the chuck.

The spring-cam clutch consists of two toothed parts pressed by a spring. If the resistance is higher than the spring force, the couplings will slip and disconnect the shaft from the chuck. The spring clutch is more reliable, but it wears out and begins to block the tool even under light load.

Reducer. It transfers engine energy to the chuck and activates the impact mechanism. There are one and two-speed. Consists of gears of various shapes, lubricated with grease, which is changed during repair or maintenance of the tool.

Mechanical and pneumatic shock systems are distinguished, which in turn are divided into several subspecies. But in any case, just know that the more impact force a tool has, the harder materials it can handle. And of course, that such a percussion instrument cannot do without anti-vibration protection, they, in turn, also come in 2 types. The passive system is made up of rubber pads on the handles of the tools, while the active system is a whole set of springs and counterweights that absorb vibration. The passive system is effective on less powerful models, and the active system is indispensable for more powerful devices. Pay attention to the characteristics listed above to select the right tool.

But at the same time, they are not designed for regular intensive use, they often overheat and generally have little productivity.
Drum rock drills got their name for their characteristic shape, which is due to the vertical placement of the engine inside the housing. They are also known as L-shaped rock drills. Most of these models are intended for semi-professional and professional use. Some of them are able to compete with light bumpers in destructive potential. Due to this design, it was possible to increase the working resource and the impact force, which allows even low-power devices of this type to perform rather difficult tasks. For the sake of such characteristics, I had to sacrifice comfort. Ergonomics of devices are worse than those of direct analogs, and strong vibration complicates the workflow.

Considering all of the above, it is easy to say only that for not the most intensive home use, it is better to choose a light and cheap straight puncher, but for a regular professional barrel hammer. But such cases, when the master needs the lightest or, on the contrary, very heavy device are rather exceptions. In most cases, it is possible to choose between perforators of both types that are similar in characteristics, and in this case it is already a matter of preferences of the master.
