Why Do You Need Brushes In An Angle Grinder

What are toothbrushes for??

Taking a toothbrush every morning, few of us think about why we use it. There are a lot of brushes on sale, but it will be difficult to describe them to us. Most likely, we would not describe its properties, but the thickness of its handle or its color.

However, despite our indifference, it is toothbrushes that can provide us with healthy gums and teeth. Toothbrushes were invented several centuries ago, since then they have changed and developed significantly, and now we can use brushes that have the most effective shape. In the Middle East, as early as the sixth century, cleaning brooms appeared, which are sticks, at the ends of which the wood was dissolved. Almost a thousand years later, devices were invented in China that are very similar to modern toothbrushes. They were made from bristles attached to a bamboo handle.

The modern type of toothbrush was invented in England only at the end of the eighteenth century, and they were launched into mass production in the United States in 1885. However, their bristles, as in the days of the ancient Chinese emperors, were made from Siberian boar nap. And only in the twentieth century it becomes nylon, which allowed these brushes to last longer. Also, bacteria did not grow on them.

Since then, the shape of the brush has not fundamentally changed. However, new technologies have allowed her to make brushing her teeth more enjoyable and effective. Currently, we can choose for ourselves the optimal configuration of a toothbrush: its size, stiffness, the shape of the bristles and the size of its working surface. For example, a brush with too stiff bristles can damage your gums, but too soft will not clean your teeth properly.

A professional toothbrush has a rounded bristle shape, which is unable to injure the gums and teeth during brushing. It also has an elastic connection that allows you to distribute the correct pressure during this procedure. In addition, you shouldn’t forget about the service life of your toothbrush, which is two and a half to three months.

What are brushes in an angle grinder for?

An angle grinder (or an angle grinder, abbreviated as an angle grinder) is an indispensable tool for construction and renovation work. The result of the loads during the operation of the device is the need to replace parts. If the repair is negligent, the entire mechanism can be damaged.

Brushes especially often need to be replaced. Therefore, it is worth considering what is the cause of the breakdown. And how to change the brushes for an angle grinder.

Brief content of the article:

Signs of a malfunctioning mechanism

In the process of using the angle grinder, it is impossible to avoid the ingress of small debris into the mechanism. This leads to short circuits and overheating in the area of the copper plates. The rise in temperature causes the brushes to melt and burn. And as soon as the dimensions become close to the minimum specified by the manufacturer, the master may observe the following warning signs:

  • metal brushes on an angle grinder start to sparkle;
  • when working, the tool jerks or jerks;
  • if the brushes are heavily worn, a burning smell may appear.

Some manufacturers of angle grinders use special types of safety brushes. They are equipped with a special device that controls their length. As soon as the parameters of the parts do not meet the requirements, it blocks the operation of the mechanism until the malfunction is eliminated. This measure helps to protect the entire tool from failure.

Rules for replacing brushes in angle grinders from different manufacturers

A wise craftsman will not wait for a tool to show signs of breakage. Since the replacement of brushes is part of the maintenance of the angle grinder, it will regularly clean the manifold for dirt and inspect these parts.

It is worth remembering that manufacturers of brushes for an angle grinder always indicate the minimum size at which the product still retains its performance. This figure may differ slightly depending on the manufacturer.

Most tool models offer two options for the location of the electric brushes. In the first case, they can be inside the handle. In the second option, the brushes are placed on the body. However, regardless of the location of these parts, for prevention purposes, it is worth disassembling the tool and lubricating all of its components.

Before starting the analysis of the angle grinder, you must disconnect it from the power supply. Then you need to disconnect the tips, inspect the holder. After removing the brushes themselves, a thorough check is required for mechanical damage, which will indicate wear, requiring replacement of the part.

Here are examples of repair work on angle grinders from leading manufacturers:

Repair of Interskol models begins with removing the stator cover, after which it is necessary to unscrew the screws from the holder. The minimum remaining length of brushes on the mechanisms of this company cannot be less than 5 mm.

On Bosch angle grinders, you just need to open the handle of the stator housing to remove the brushes. The device of this brand will not work with the length of the working brushes less than 8 mm.

When you buy an angle grinder, you will find in-demand spare parts in the starter kit. From them you can decide which brushes to choose.

How to choose brushes for your angle grinder

New technologies involve the production of brushes by pressing carbonaceous material at high temperatures. This method increases the life of the parts due to less wear.

There are several main types of this part:

The most common are graphite brushes. For this, the main material from which the part is made is shaped. Then it is covered with a graphite layer and fired at temperatures from 2500 degrees. The result is a strong, durable connection that pays for the high cost.

Carbon brushes are considered the cheapest and most short-lived option. Low wear resistance is formed due to the lack of heat treatment.

The most reliable option is metal-graphite brushes. The composition of the coating, in addition to the carbonaceous material, includes copper with the addition of lead, tin or silver. Such parts are rarely purchased for household appliances due to the high price.

To summarize, replacing brushes is an important part of maintaining your angle grinder. Inattentiveness in this regard can lead to more serious damage, such as destruction of the armature collector plate. When replacing, it is important to properly disassemble and assemble the mechanism, along the way lubricated its main components.

When deciding which brush is better in a particular case, it is better to refer to the instructions or those passport of the device. If you have additional questions, it makes sense to contact the service center for advice.

Nov 12 How do facial cleansing brushes work and why? Let’s take a look at FOREO LUNA 3 as an example

A few years ago, FOREO LUNA facial cleansing brushes literally blew up the Internet: they are praised for perfect cleansing, gentle exfoliation, flawless skin smoothness after use, versatility (suitable for sensitive types too, yes!). A year ago, FOREO LUNA mini 2 (miniature brush) became the second most popular product after the new iPhone on the international trading platform Tmall. The brand recently launched the new FOREO LUNA 3, a brush that has been improved in all respects. We will tell you how it differs and how it works.

The main idea of FOREO is a deep but gentle cleansing, without abrasives, without injuries, without side effects in the form of increased skin sensitivity. Ok, can’t you wash with the same effect with gel / foam / whatever? No, you can’t. this question disappears after the very first use of FOREO brushes. The effect is comparable to salon procedures for deep cleansing: for example, as when you were washed and had a light peeling. They help to achieve cleanliness, smoothness, polished skin without the use of peels and scrubs. And at the same time they work quite delicately. So much so that those with reactive skin can use brushes too.

PINK FOREO LUNA 3. NORMAL SKIN BRUSH

How FOREO works?

The technology behind the operation of all FOREO brushes is called T-sonic Pulsation. which means transdermal pulsation. What it means: When turned on, the brush pulsates, so that the bristles transmit a vertical impulse, as if “knocking” dirt out of the pores. It is important to understand that the bristles will not scrub or scratch the skin. This is the fundamental point that distinguishes FOREO from all other brushes. the gadget works smoothly, but efficiently. If you look at the brush while it is on, you will not see any movement at all. This is because the pulsation frequency is 8000 per minute. This is very, very much. so much so that only pulsation is felt, and not individual “movements” of the bristles. The bristles (and in general the entire brush) are made of silicone, their tips are rounded, therefore they do not injure the skin. FOREO also promises that the brush is hygienically safe and will not become a breeding ground for bacteria.

What makes FOREO LUNA 3 brushes different?

LAVENDER FOREO LUNA 3. SENSITIVE SKIN BRUSH, THE MOST GENTLE

Compared to the previous generation of brushes (i.e. LUNA 2), LUNA 3 has longer bristles, which cleans pores better and the silicone is softer. That is, it cleans better, but softer. The area occupied by the bristles has also become larger. And the new brushes only work in combination with the free mobile app. This is very convenient, because it helps to get personalized care. the one that suits you personally (you can adjust all this in the settings).

There are three brushes in the FOREO LUNA 3 line: for normal, combination and sensitive skin. They differ from each other in color: blue is suitable for oily and combination skin, pink. for normal, lavender. for sensitive. Their difference is in the rigidity and diameter of the bristles. For combination skin, they are tougher for normal and sensitive. softer.

BLUE FOREO LUNA 3. MIXED OILY SKIN BRUSH

Each of them, in turn, has different modes of operation. only 16. The strength of the pulsations can be increased or decreased. The more intensely the brush pulsates, the deeper it cleans. The new LUNA 3 is fully synchronized with the FOREO For You mobile app (available in the Play Market and IOS), you cannot turn it on without your phone. The application helps to optimize the cleansing and massage regimen in accordance with the type and needs of the skin: in the morning, for example, you can set the lightest, in the evening, when you need to wash off everything that has accumulated on it during the day, it is more powerful.

What else can FOREO LUNA 3 do?

Do a toning and firming massage. In one of his interviews, the director of the regional representative office of the brand Haris Saratch spoke in detail about this function of FOREO brushes. He explained that this is possible thanks to low-frequency vibrations that penetrate deeply and work on the muscles, contracting them. Due to this, the effect of relaxing facial expressions, sculpting and tightening actions is achieved.

To simplify completely, the mechanism of FOREO massage effect on the skin is as follows: pulsations improve local blood circulation, due to which the skin immediately looks fresher and more invigorating, and also (again thanks to pulsations) relaxes facial expressions. Yes, this is not forever, but in daily skin care this is a good help, since we do not go to a specialist for massage every day and not even every week.

LUNA 3 has several massage programs: for removing puffiness around the eyes and lifting in the periorbital zone, for sculpting the face (here the emphasis is on working out the lower third and cheekbones), for the neck and the area around the mouth. The effect is instant: 2-5 minutes of massage. and the face looks more invigorated.

What else is important to know about FOREO LUNA 3?

Does LUNA 3 have an instant effect? Yes. It can be compared to the so-called “atraumatic cleaning” procedure, which you have probably heard of. The skin becomes smoother, its relief is smoother, thanks to exfoliation and micromassage, the complexion also improves.

FOREO LUNA 3 FROM ALL SIDES: CLEANING FRONT. WITH BRUSHES, REAR. WITH “WAVES” FOR MASSAGE

Brushes are said to stretch the skin. Is that true? Not. FOREO bristles send vertical impulses without pulling or scratching the skin.

One full charge lasts 650 uses: If you use the LUNA 3 twice a day, the battery will last 325 days without charging. So, on a trip, for example, you definitely won’t have to take a charger.

Classification

As already mentioned, electric brushes can be classified by the material from which they are made. A graphite brush, as the name suggests, is made from graphite, to which soot and bonding elements are added. This type of current collectors is most often used for UMSh.

The carbon brush is made of the same material, but without heat treatment. Such a product wears out much faster and is practically not used for an angle grinder. It is important not to make a mistake when purchasing replacement brushes. Carbon brushes on an angle grinder will not last long.

The metallographite brush is used in large industrial units, and it is unlikely that it will be possible to install it on an angle grinder. It is the most durable product with a very high price tag. The variety of cord brushes is much greater, their shape, material and size vary significantly, which is determined by the variety of applications for such equipment. They can also be classified according to the material from which they are made. The most popular are brushes with metal bristles. The metal brush is a fairly versatile attachment. For the manufacture of such products, both metals and alloys are used.

For work on metal, steel brushes are used. Brushes made of stainless steel are best used on stainless steel or aluminum. Often steel pile is covered with brass, such brushes do not corrode. There are also pure brass brushes. despite their great softness, they have a number of advantages: a relatively soft effect on the material, no sparks when working at high speeds, no scratches during surface treatment.

The wire for such brushes can be different. Twisted wire is usually the toughest, it can be bundled (they are more rigid and can self-sharpen) or chaotically fastened. These efficient attachments can be used to remove welding scale or rust. The corrugated cord brush has a wave-like curved pile and, unlike the previous type, does not affect the surface as intensely. With its help, you can clean the surface from old paint.

Smooth bristle brushes are widely used, they are the most versatile and can be used on any surface. Their efficiency may be slightly lower than that of specialized attachments. Nozzles with polymer bristles, such as nylon, are used for polishing various surfaces, including metal. They can be successfully used for woodwork. for texture selection or finishing. Plastic brushes are often used on soft materials.

Brushes can be divided according to their shape.

need, brushes, angle, grinder

The cup is used for working with large surfaces. Its form follows from the name. A clamping nut is most often immediately attached to such a brush, since the special key provided in the kit with the angle grinder cannot be applied to it. The conical brush is used for working with concave surfaces. Radial, as a kind of flat brushes, is used to process hard-to-reach areas. Disc, the most common type of cord brushes, also has a flat shape and can be used to process a wide variety of small surfaces.

And more cord brushes are divided into size groups. The diameter of the brushes is determined by the technical capabilities of the angle grinder and the scope of application of this attachment. Brushes with a diameter of less than 115 mm are usually used for small surfaces. It is better not to use a circle of more than 200 mm for a small angle grinder, you will have to remove the protective cover, and this is a violation of all safety standards. Such large brushes are usually used for processing large structures and only with the help of large powerful UMSh.

The most acceptable for domestic purposes is the diameter of the brushes 125 mm. It is possible to offer a fourth classification of cord brushes. by application. Brush brush, the name is given from the name of the technical operation that is carried out using this nozzle. Brushing. preparation of the surface for subsequent processing: removal of rust, paint, dirt. At some stages, this is a process of chemical action on the surface of the product, but the initial treatment consists in mechanical cleaning of the surface. For mechanical brushing, metal (steel or brass-coated) brushes are used. The task of such processing is to remove scale, oil stains, small defects, burrs and the like. It is sometimes difficult to assess the quality of the weld without brushing, the adhering scale can hide some defects.

For processing soft materials (plastic or wood), nylon, rope (sisal) and hair scrubbing brushes are used. Such brushes must be moistened with special emulsions (vegetable oil can be used for wood), otherwise the surface will turn out dull.

Classification of brushes for angle grinder and features of their selection

Brushes are called both current collectors inside an angle grinder. a necessary element of an electric motor, without which an angle grinder, like any other electric tool, cannot work, and removable nozzles, which allow cleaning, grinding and even polishing various surfaces with this tool. In this article we will try to deal with those and other brushes.

What are we for?

In this section, we will not talk about electric brushes for a long time, their purpose is to remove current from the rotor (armature), in other words, without them there will be no rotation in the electric motor, the rod of the power tool will not rotate, and it will not work. But about cord brushes need to be said in more detail. They are used for the machining of various materials. Different types of these attachments are used for cleaning before painting or applying primer, for brushing wood, for removing old paint from various surfaces, for polishing, sanding, smoothing corners and other operations.

They are especially necessary for cleaning metal products after welding in order to remove scale.

Features of brushes

If we talk about electric brushes, then first you need to clarify the name. This device was called brushes even in the early days of its existence (the beginning of the 20th century), when, in fact, a design resembling a brush or, more precisely, a brush was used to remove current from the rotor of an electric motor. Such a device, despite its high efficiency, turned out to be too short-lived and was replaced by a more durable one, made of a dense material into which a copper wire is pressed.

The movement of the rotor of the electric motor causes constant friction of the working surface of the electric brushes, which is the main reason for the failure of this part. As a result, they have to be changed periodically. This process is natural and inevitable during prolonged use of any power tool. It is very simple to identify the wear of the brushes: a previously reliable unit will begin to work intermittently, a characteristic smell of ozone may appear from the abundant formation of sparks in the current collector. It is advisable to replace the electric brushes at the first sign of abrasion.

Electric brushes are graphite, carbon or metal-graphite. In all varieties, the main material is carbon.

In the first case, the product is pressed at high pressure, and then thermally processed, acquiring increased wear resistance. The coal option is the cheapest, since it does not involve heat treatment. These brushes are the least durable. Metallographite brushes are the most expensive because, in addition to carbon, they contain metal powder. This is the most durable option, which can be found very rarely in household appliances. As already mentioned, also called a brush is a detachable attachment for an angle grinder.

In order for the UMSh (angle grinder) to perform its main functions, it is necessary to install one or another nozzle on it. These can be cut-off or grinding discs or brushes with various kinds of pile, fixed in a circle. Such a removable device is called a cord brush or, even shorter, a cord brush. Brushes, like disks for UMSh, are consumables. In the process of work, they wear out, and they need to be changed. Brushes for an angle grinder are designed in such a way that they are installed on a rod thanks to a hole in the center, this is their main difference from brushes for a drill, which have a shank for installing them in a drill chuck.

The pile of the brush, depending on the specifics of its application, can be steel, brass, polymer fibers and even wool.

How to choose?

If you have decided on the size and type of brush, you should pay attention to its quality. The wire iron brush should have a uniformly distributed pile, individual villi should not be longer or shorter, this factor can cause poor surface treatment and excessive vibration, therefore, and stress not only on the parts of the angle grinder, but also on the hands of the person who will perform work.

Excessive vibration of the machine during operation is the main reason for the high stress on the muscles of the arms. With a small diameter brush, vibration is always less. A polymer brush is the lightest type of cord brushes, and the vibration with it is the least, but not every surface can be processed with such a nozzle. A polymer-abrasive brush is used for brushing (aging) wood, and you should not try to process metal with it.

Wire Brushes for Angle Grinders

Subtleties of operation

Installing or changing a cord brush for an angle grinder is no more difficult than doing it with a cut-off wheel. You need to fasten it with a nut, and the same standard open-end wrench with pins is used to tighten and unscrew it. Some cup and cone brushes come with a nut. Replacing such a nozzle is even easier, just screw it onto the pin. Working with a cord brush does not imply strong pressure in the direction of the surface to be treated, this can cause the appearance of furrows, which will be a sign of poor-quality, unprofessional processing.

Operation without a protective cover is inadmissible. Safety goggles or a mask are required to protect the eyes from splinters of wire cord, shavings or flying pieces of old paint and metal scale. The high speed of rotation of the brush can give the shards a completely unpredictable trajectory, so the eye protection must fit snugly against the face. It is also advisable to protect hands from sparks and chips, small metal splinters or cuts with large chips and sharp edges of scale are possible.

Any operations with the preparation of the angle grinder for work (replacement of the cord brush, cutting wheel, adjusting the position of the protective cover, cleaning) must be performed after disconnecting from the power supply.

What are generator brushes, and what are they for??

Generator brushes are an integral part of the electric current supply and discharge system. Despite their small size, they are of great importance to the machine. After all, if the brushes do not function. the generator in the vehicle will no longer generate voltage. Accordingly, all electronic mechanisms will not work normally.

It is noteworthy that generator brushes are used not only in cars with gasoline and diesel internal combustion engines, but also in electric motors of trolley buses and hoisting machines. In addition, this element is indispensable when using welding machines and many other tools powered by electric energy.

At the moment, all generator brushes are made of graphite, regardless of whether they are used on a machine or on a car. Now there are a huge number of models and varieties of these parts. Carbon brushes of the EG 4 model have become widespread. They are no different from their counterparts. However, there are also such generator brushes, which are characterized by their special composition with a special impregnation, which does not allow the mechanism to fail before the specified time. They are usually used for high speed electric motors. Often, these motors are equipped with generator brushes of the EG 61 series. It is also worth noting that not all parts may fit a specific generator. The car starter and all electronic devices will not work if there are foreign brushes under the hood. Therefore, when choosing, always be guided by the manufacturer’s recommendations. Having learned the exact make and model of the device, you can easily select the part you need.

If motorists do not have any special problems with the purchase, then with the installation it is quite the opposite. And in order for the generator brushes to work with maximum benefit, you should carefully monitor the sequence of your work. In general, the replacement process is not very difficult. It consists of the following steps:

  • Removing the generator from the mountings.
  • Removing the special plug from the brush holder output.
  • Unscrewing the screw securing the last part (here it is advisable to use a small screwdriver in order to speed up the replacement process).
  • Removing the brush holder.
  • Installation of parts.
  • Assembling the parts in reverse order.
need, brushes, angle, grinder

Also, one of the frequently asked questions is the timing of the replacement of brushes. To answer this question, you need to look at the part externally and assess its degree of wear. To do this, take into account the distance to which the generator brushes protrude from the holder. If this value does not exceed the mark of 5 millimeters, then the part must be urgently replaced.

Based on this, we can conclude that the generator brush, although a primitive detail, but without its presence, it is already impossible to move the car. You can start the car, but in this case, the entire load from the electronic systems will be put on the battery. And she, as a rule, holds the ignition without brushes for only a few minutes. Therefore, it is advisable to keep in stock several sets of such devices so that you do not have to call a tow truck in the middle of the road.

What are power tool brushes and what are they for

Appointment

This element is necessary in order to transmit electric current to the rotor to create rotation. Therefore, it is necessary that the material from which they are made conducts electricity well and at the same time be hard enough so that it does not wear out much under the influence of friction. Therefore, power tool carbon brushes are used that meet both requirements. Another positive quality of this material is that when a voltage arc occurs between the contacts, it does not weld to the metal. This is especially important, since such an electric arc occurs quite often during engine operation.

Wear

It should be noted that the most common brushes for power tools, which are installed by the manufacturer, have a relatively short service life. This is especially evident during intensive work and heavy loads. Also, in the event of breakdowns, in most cases they are associated with brushes, which greatly simplifies the repair.

Most professional devices have a special valve that allows access to the engine for replacement. Keep in mind, however, that power tool brushes are only suitable for the model for which they were designed. This is not related to material properties, but due to design. Therefore, some craftsmen, as an emergency measure, take out brushes from a working device and install them in a non-working one, adjusting the dimensions with a file. However, this method can only be used in extreme cases to help complete work quickly. It is not suitable for permanent use.

Views

Currently, power tool brushes have several types and types. This variety is achieved by adding various components to the graphite during manufacture to give the product certain qualities.

With the active use of various tools in which an electric motor is installed, it is necessary to take care of the availability of various consumables. Therefore, among the large selection of drills, cut-off wheels and saws, there must be brushes for power tools. They can help out the master at the most crucial moment of his work and help to extend the life of the equipment. Also, do not put too much stress on the tool, as this leads to a reduction in the service life of not only the brushes, but also the motor as a whole.

Replacing brushes

Typically, factory-installed power tool brushes have a short lifespan. Therefore, they may need to be replaced at any time. Many professional power tools have a valve that allows access to the motor. So changing the brushes is easy. But it must be borne in mind that they are suitable only for those models for which they were developed. This is why some masters resort to emergency measures. They remove the brushes from the working device and put them out of work. In this case, the dimensions are carefully adjusted with a file. But this method of replacing brushes is completely unsuitable for frequent use.

What are power tool brushes and what are they for

Purpose of brushes for power tools

Graphite brushes, which are installed in power tools, are designed to transfer electric current to the rotor. This is required to create a rotation. Therefore, when choosing such brushes, you should pay special attention to the material of their manufacture. It must absolutely conduct electricity well and be firm enough not to wear out too quickly.
Carbon brushes for power tools meet the above requirements. By the way, the positive quality of this material can be considered the fact that when a voltage arc occurs between the contacts, it is not welded to the metal. This is very important, since an electric arc often occurs during engine operation.

Varieties of brushes for power tools

Currently, there are several types of brushes for power tools. This variety is achieved mainly by adding additional components to the graphite. This is done to impart certain qualities to the product. Manufacturers often try to increase the service life of materials. But there are also special brushes that are made of components that significantly reduce sparking during operation.

It can be concluded that with the active use of a power tool, you need to take care of the availability of consumables in advance, including special brushes. They can really extend the life of the tool and help out the master at the most crucial working moment. But it is not recommended to put too heavy loads on the tool, as this can lead to the failure of the brushes.

Selection recommendations

When choosing brushes, first of all, you should pay attention to the material for their manufacture: good electrical conductivity and strength (hardness) of the product itself are important here, which affects its durability. One of the important characteristics of parts is active resistance, which is taken into account when calculating data on the motor winding and the rating of the ballasts. Carbon brushes fully meet these requirements. Coal material has an additional advantage: when a voltage arc appears, welding to metal surfaces does not occur (when the engine is running, an electric arc occurs quite often).

need, brushes, angle, grinder

Many branded carbon brushes are equipped with an automatic shutdown mechanism: a special spring with a non-conductive ceramic tip is installed in the part. When a certain level of wear is reached, the spring pushes the handpiece out and the power tool shuts down. In case of wear, without this mechanism, the spring of the brush holder or the brush lead can act on the collector, leading to the breakage of the armature (it is recommended from time to time to analyze the condition of the brush assembly and the brushes themselves).

Generator brushes are characterized by the shortest service life. Such parts, in addition to their own wear, negatively affect the operation of the engine. These products are made of almost pure copper, with a slight addition of carbon components, graphite and other impurities. These parts are designed for the amount of current corresponding to the value in the generators (much higher than that of the engine). Do not put them in power tools: such actions can immediately cause a short circuit in the circuit. If the armature has time to work, then high voltage and high temperature will disable the winding, which will require expensive repairs.

Important! The armature collector copper can be hard or soft. For soft copper, you need to choose special soft brushes. If, in this case, rigid products are installed, then the collector can be completely worn out in a short time, and repairs will be required to replace the armature. When installing soft parts on a hard collector, the brushes themselves will fail.

Power tool brushes: purpose, selection and replacement

In construction, the power tool is an irreplaceable assistant. It is used for drilling holes, driving in nails, etc. All power tools are equipped with special brushes, the purpose of which is to transmit electric current. By removing voltage from the stator, the brushes apply it to the rotor / armature manifold, which is required to create rotation. Thus, brushes are used as a current supply and at the same time have the necessary properties to withstand mechanical loads during the rotation of the armature.

They are usually made of coal or graphite. Various additives can be added to the base material to ensure that the product meets certain standards. For example, there are carbon brushes made of materials that reduce sparks during operation. But, in general, the main goal of manufacturers is to increase the service life. For a longer period of operation of the brushes, do not put too high a load on the power tool. The types of parts include:

  • Carbon brushes;
  • Copper-plated;
  • Carbon-graphite;
  • Copper-coal;
  • Graphite;
  • Copper-graphite.

Repair an angle grinder that stops working randomly. replace the carbon brushes

The wide variety of power tool brushes does not guarantee high quality. It is difficult for a non-specialist to identify a fake due to the many different nuances. Therefore, such parts are best purchased from authorized dealers and replaced at the appropriate service centers. This will guarantee a quality installation with a check of the general condition of the tool and its brush assembly.

Replacing brushes

For the correct operation of the tool, it is important to fine-tune the brush assembly, which includes a pressure device, a contact group and a guide profile. For low-class power tools, contactless brush holders are sometimes used. If the brush pressure is incorrectly adjusted, the collector, as well as the brush assembly, may overheat, leading to a malfunction of the armature.

Manufactured by the manufacturer, these parts are often characterized by a short service life. For this reason, many professional tools are equipped with an access valve. This technology allows parts to be changed without much difficulty. However, such graphite brushes are only suitable for the models for which they were intended. In the event of an emergency repair, some craftsmen remove these parts from the working device and rearrange it to a non-working device, adjusting the dimensions with a file. This method is not suitable for widespread use and is unlikely to give a good result when using the product. The main sign that the resource of these parts is coming to an end is a bright glow through the body. The grinder mechanism is cooled by letting air through itself together with abrasive particles, which gradually destroys the material of the brushes.

To replace, you will need to do the following:

  • After unscrewing the compartment cover, remove what remains of these parts. The armature and other parts of the power tool will most likely not need to be disassembled. Carbon brushes are fixed in spring-loaded brush holders or in brass glasses. To prevent the springs from running into the manifold walls during repairs, special parking pins are provided.
  • Remove the brushes together with the holder. The deformation process can be reflected unevenly: production depends on the position of the parts in relation to the jet of air-abrasive mixture.
  • Using a vernier caliper, measure the removed parts and compare their size with new parts. If necessary, larger brushes can be finished with sandpaper (grit 150) and also with a flat file.
  • Compare the position of the terminal wires. If parts do not fit, additional cutting of the wiring groove may be required.
  • Install the spare part and connect the wires to the appropriate terminals. If necessary, you can use old wires by soldering them to new products.

After installation, check the operation of the instrument: new parts should not spark, and the working sound should be smooth, without sudden changes.
