Operating rules for gasoline and electric lawn mowers

The operating rules for gasoline and electric lawn mowers are approximately the same. You always need to follow the rules that are clearly spelled out in the instructions from the manufacturer. It is important to pay attention to the moment when the device needs to take a break. For example, if the engine overheats on a gasoline lawn mower, this will lead to its failure.

After each working process, you need to remove the remnants of grass from the knife and other equipment parts. The mower should be stored in a dry place where it will not be threatened by precipitation. As soon as work with garden equipment ends, it must be turned off so that there is no threat to the health and life of your loved ones. When the device is running, it is impossible to inspect the equipment. If you find any problems, then you need to contact the service center, where you will be provided with qualified assistance. A problem that is identified in time will allow you to avoid expensive repairs in the future.

If a very large and thick grass has grown on your site, then you cannot mow it at a time. You need to walk the mower several times. The grass must be removed gradually so that the mower does not overload.

In order for the knife not to dull when hitting the ground, you need to avoid unevenness in the area. In order for the lawn to be cut beautifully and correctly, you need to carry the device only forward. To prevent the lawnmower from harming you, you must wear protective clothing and shoes. The mower is not used where there are stones, curbs, debris. All this can lead to damage to a working lawn mower.

Now is the time to talk about how to use the lawn mower correctly, as well as how to properly repair and service it.

Good care of your lawn mower is the key to its long-term use

It should be noted that the lawn mower is a versatile and one of the most convenient machines that is used for gardening purposes. Thanks to the use of a lawn mower on the site, you can create an unusual landscape design. A lawnmower can be called a highly specialized unit, as it can only mow the lawn. Nevertheless, it is the lawn mower that becomes the best assistant for summer residents, owners of suburban areas. In municipal services, lawn mowers are necessarily used. With their help, parks, squares are always maintained in proper form.

When buying a lawn mower, special interest and attention are always shown to it. Remember not to overload the mower. The machine needs care, cleaning with your own hands. However, over time, the lawn mower still becomes a common tool for work, which is paid little attention.

How to sharpen a knife in a lawn mower

First of all, we will tell you how to sharpen knives on lawn mowers. Let’s say right away that the principle is the same on gasoline and electric devices. First, turn off the power to the mower. Then we put the device on the brake. The protective cover is removed. After turning the mower on its side, wear rubber gloves or other gloves to avoid injury. Use a brush to remove dirt and grass from visible parts. Then we remove the knife and fix it in a vice. Now you can start sharpening the knife with a file. If the knife is bent during operation, then it is necessary to align it. To do this, put the product on a flat surface and level it with a hammer.

Watch a helpful video on sharpening lawn mower knives

Once all the work is done, you can put it in place. Most often, knives begin to sharpen in the spring, when there will be the first mowing. You don’t have to sharpen the knife during the season.

According to the words, everything is so simple, but when a person who does not understand anything in this matter is taken to work, many difficulties immediately appear. It is best not to do the work yourself. Entrust it to specialists. Improper sharpening will result in the knife being thrown away. In order to remove the knife from the mower, you must use a socket or box wrench. It is not necessary to re-tighten the bolt too much, since you will have to unscrew it again later. Not only that, the force will cause the thread to be ripped off.

How to care for your lawn mower

The inside of the mower cover must be cleaned after each mow. The grass that collects on the device can not only interfere with further work, but also cause a fire. Do not use chemicals to clean the mower. This may damage some parts. If you wash some parts with water, then you need to wipe everything dry very well afterwards. As soon as a little paint lags behind the metal, corrosion will immediately begin.

There are such modern models that have a fitting available. A hose is connected through it. The water turns on, the mower starts. While the knife is rotating, it is washed.

All lawn mowers have air-cooled engines. To keep the engine from overheating, you need to constantly clean its fins on the radiator. In order to clean the motor, sometimes some parts have to be dismantled. A great way to clean your engine is to use a compressor that supplies compressed air.

Fuel quality affects engine performance and performance. After the last use, you must drain the gasoline from the gas tank. Best of all, when it is all worked out. So, you need to crank the starter so that all the valves close. So we leave the technique until next season.

Sometimes the engine oil and spark plugs are changed on lawn mowers. The oil is changed when the manufacturer requires it. Only a special oil in terms of viscosity and grade is used. There are engines where the lower compartment opens to drain the oil, and it also happens that you need to turn the mower on its side.

It is better to drain the oil immediately after work. Then precipitation will not have time to form in the crankcase, and the viscosity of the hot oil is much lower.

If the candles are corroded or burnt out, then they need to be replaced. You can simply clean the candles, but it is better if a new one is installed. The air and fuel filters also need to be cleaned and in some cases replaced.

Petrol or electric lawn mowers, the choice is yours

There are two types of lawn mowers on sale today. These are electric lawn mowers and gasoline ones. If you need to mow the grass far from home, then it is best to use gasoline technology. The advantage is that the petrol lawnmower does not depend on electricity. The engine is absolutely unaffected by long-term operation of the lawn mower.

The mowing speed of a gasoline lawn mower is much faster than an electric lawn mower. Before starting your petrol lawn mower, you need to make sure that there is fuel in the tank, and most importantly, engine oil. If there is no oil, the engine will jam. In this case, you will have to spend a lot of money on repairs.

Electric lawn mowers are considered more economical and quieter. However, there is a clear drawback to electric lawn mowers. this is the lack of mobility. And it is limited by the length of the power cord. You need to constantly be near the outlet. over, during operation, the wire is often confused, it has to be corrected.

Before turning on the electric lawnmower, you need to check whether the power cable and the outlet itself is intact. Under no circumstances should the electric lawnmower be used during rain or dew. This technique can only be used on dry grass.

Storing the mower

The lawn mower should be stored in a closed and dry area. Moisture, snow. all this is unacceptable for technology. Make sure that no children or animals are approaching the mower. Only a dry and clean lawn mower is sent for storage.

Before mowing the grass, you need to check that there are no bricks, metal or glass on it. Otherwise, the knife could break and the engine could jam. Replacing the knife is not a problem, but replacing the motor is not a cheap pleasure.

It is best to operate the mower when the grass is dry and it should not rain outside. If the mower is powered, you can get an electric shock. If a gasoline lawn mower, then if water gets on the filter, the device will fail.

The mower smokes a lot

The reason why the mower smokes may be due to the following:

  • gasoline prepared for two-stroke engines was poured into the fuel tank, or it was stored in an oil container;
  • the air damper position regulator is faulty or is in the “Off” position;
  • too high oil level;
  • the mower, filled with oil, was stored vertically.

To check the gasoline, it is drained, then obviously clean fuel is poured, corresponding to the octane number, after which the engine is started and the grass is mowed. If after 5-10 minutes the gasoline lawnmower has not stopped smoking, then the problem is something else.

If the smoke has disappeared, then it is advisable to replace the spark plug, and in the future, more carefully approach the choice of fuel for the lawn mower.

If the air damper drive is in good working order and its lever is in the “On” position, then it is necessary to check the oil level, if it is above the “MAX” mark on the dipstick, then the excess oil has pushed through the oil seals and now the grease enters the engine.

In this case, it is not enough just to pump out the excess oil, because the oil seals have already been pressed through, which means that the mower will begin to actively consume oil, which, burning in the engine, forms dark smoke.

Therefore, it is advisable to contact a specialized workshop, where they can check the condition of the engine (oil entering the cylinder negatively affects many of its parts), and also replace the crushed oil seals.

If the lawn mower was stored with oil filled in and in an upright position, then you need to contact the service to replace the oil seals and revise other parts, as well as more carefully read the operating instructions and observe the rules for storing the machine outlined in it.

Motor stalls randomly

The most common reasons why the engine stalls during operation are:

  • dirty air filter;
  • dirty fuel filter (only for models with a fuel filter);
  • faulty ignition switch (does not fully open the ignition circuit);
  • damaged insulation of the ignition cut-off wires;
  • faulty air damper drive;
  • the tightness of the ignition coil is broken or its winding is broken.

The initial inspection is carried out in the same way as described in the previous section. If everything is outwardly normal, then they carefully inspect and feel all the wires suitable for the switch that blocks the operation of the ignition system, perhaps the insulation is damaged somewhere and, upon contact with the bare metal of the case, a short circuit occurs, extinguishing the spark.

If the insulation of all the wires is not damaged, then the wires are disconnected from the switch and the engine is checked. normal operation without spontaneous shutdown indicates that the switch must be replaced, if the problem persists, then the search for its causes continues.

For further verification, the air is washed and the fuel filters are changed, and the operation of the air damper drive is checked. when it is closed, its speed should fall, and the sound of the engine should also change greatly.

operate, lawn, mower, hands

If all these actions did not help to find the cause of the problem, then its source is dirt in the carburetor or injection system, this happens when working on bad gasoline.

To cope with such a problem at home, you need special equipment and the skill of repairing fuel systems. If you do not have such equipment and skills, it is better to contact a specialized workshop.

Engine won’t start

There are quite a few reasons why the engine does not start:

  • empty fuel tank;
  • clogged air filter;
  • muffler clogged;
  • the ignition switch is in the wrong position or defective;
  • the choke lever is in the wrong position;
  • faulty candle;
  • broken or clogged carburetor.

Cuts grass poorly

If after mowing the grass looks clumpy, then the reason for this is always the same. a dull knife, which must either be sharpened or replaced.

In this case, it is necessary to take into account the manufacturer’s recommendations, because not all knives can be sharpened, especially at home, so if it is recommended to change the knife in the operating instructions, then do not experiment.

An improperly sharpened knife quickly dulls and loses balance, which can lead not only to vibration, but also to rapid wear of the engine bearings. If the knife can be sharpened, then do it as described in the previous section.

Gasoline lawn mower malfunctions: the most common problems and their elimination

Like any motorized technique, the lawn mower sometimes breaks down and stops working or does not work properly.

over, there is always a specific reason why the equipment works intermittently, without eliminating its repair will only lead to a senseless waste of finances and time.

Having understood the device of the lawn mower and the reasons for the breakdown of certain mechanisms, in most cases it is possible to eliminate them yourself.

  • the most common malfunctions of gasoline lawn mowers;
  • the reasons for these malfunctions;
  • diagnostic methods;
  • methods of repair and prevention.

Doesn’t stop

  • the cable connecting the wheel drive bracket and the bearing squeezing out the belt is seized or sour;
  • the adjustment of the wheel drive cable is out of order.
operate, lawn, mower, hands

The cable starts to jam when stored improperly or frequently mowing wet grass, when moisture penetrates into the braid and corrosion forms there.

To check and eliminate such a malfunction, you must first pour plenty of WD-40 liquid inside the cable and wait 2-3 hours, then pour 1-2 ml of engine oil there.

It is advisable to carry out such maintenance annually, regardless of the cable jam, only the oil volume must be reduced by 2–3 times. This will protect the inside of the braid and the core from moisture, which will help the cable last much longer. If this does not help, then it is necessary to adjust the actuator as described in the operating instructions.

Engine won’t rev or keep revving

The most common reasons why the engine is not picking up speed are:

  • incorrect position of the choke lever or breakdown of its drive;
  • dirty air filter;
  • faulty manual accelerator control system.

At home, without special equipment and skills, you can only check:

  • condition of the air filter;
  • operation of the air damper drive lever (only on those models where the air damper position is manually adjusted);
  • a manual accelerator control system, that is, a special lever on the folding handle and a cable connecting it to the carburetor.

Checking the condition of the air filter and flushing it is described in detail in the mower‘s operating manual, and we examined the check of the throttle position regulator in the previous section.

To check the manual accelerator control system, you need to set the lever to a position where the engine speed will correspond to that required for mowing, then mark its position with a marker and, after waiting for them to decrease, compare the position of the lever relative to the mark.

If the lever matches the mark, then the problem is much more serious and you need to contact the service, if the lever has moved, then you need to replace it.

Some inexpensive Chinese devices are supplied with a factory defect, including an incompletely assembled air damper actuator or its incorrect adjustment.

If you know how to eliminate such defects, then you can do it yourself, if not, we recommend that you immediately contact the service center so that the mower can be repaired under warranty.

Many modern lawn mowers are equipped with automatic speed control, so they can only be diagnosed in a workshop.

Shaking violently

Such a malfunction of a gasoline lawn mower occurs in two cases:

  • when the knife is deformed due to hitting an obstacle;
  • with incorrect sharpening of the knife.

In both cases, the reason for the shaking is the lack of balance of the knife, because when the knife is struck, at least a little, but it deforms, and if the sharpening is incorrect, the metal is removed unevenly on both sides.

As a result, a lever is formed, the length or mass of the arms of which is at least slightly, but different. This leads to the fact that the motor shaft will always pull after the heavier or longer arm of the lever, and due to its rotation, such a force will also move in a circle.

In order to determine the cause, it is necessary to prepare and set the petrol lawnmower to the position for changing the blade (these operations are described in detail in the operating instructions). Then the knife is carefully examined in search of damage, if the external examination did not give anything, then it is removed and balanced.

Balancing can be performed both independently (this will require a round wooden or metal bar, the diameter of which is a fraction of a mm less than the diameter of the knife hole), and in the workshop.

When self-balancing, the knife is put on the bar and they see which side will go down, for more accurate balancing, you can slightly twist the knife on this makeshift shaft.

Having determined the heavier side, it is gradually grinded with a file by hand or on a grinder, constantly checking the balance, and the metal is removed only from the side of the blade, keeping the original sharpening angle. In the same way, the knife is sharpened at home, first the edge of the blade, then balancing it.

On some petrol lawnmower models, the shaking may be caused by a broken adapter between the engine shaft and the blade, which protects the shaft from collision damage.

Cutting Wet grass

To diagnose such a malfunction, it is necessary to set the device to the position for replacing the knife, then shake the knife in different directions and try to rotate it.

If it sways or turns even a little, the adapter needs to be changed. after all, it has fulfilled its task, protected the shaft when the knife stops abruptly, due to which it can no longer reliably fix the knife. Its replacement is also described in the instruction manual.
