Energy dense batteries and a wider-than-average cutting width are what makes the WORX WG743E.1 40V Cordless Lawnmower, on paper, a rather generous bundle at £299. With two batteries and a dual charger included in the package, this lawnmower looks well-equipped for the job. But does it have what it takes to deliver on the first grass cut of the season? We put it to the test.

Design

The WORX Cordless Lawnmower has a sleek and modern design that is both functional and visually appealing as far as outdoor equipment goes. The mower has a durable and lightweight plastic body with a sleek black and orange colour scheme. We particularly like its ability to throw off collisions with granite walls when cutting edges, as the body colour doesn’t easily highlight scratches and scrapes. The handlebars are ergonomically designed and don’t cause hand or wrist fatigue after a near hour of usage. When mowing is finished the handles can be folded down, shaping the overall mower into a more compact figure for storage, but unfortunately the handles aren’t a quick snap mechanism and instead require the screws to be loosened.

The cutting deck boasts a switch to alter between turbo and eco modes, a battery level readout so you can keep an eye on it as you’re mowing, and a wide 40cm cutting width, which allows for a faster mowing experience, as it can clear more ground and is 4cm wider than the typical width of 36cm (as seen on the Kärcher LMO 18-36 Cordless Lawnmower). The cutting height can be adjusted with a lever located on the left of the deck, and we found it a breeze to change on the fly. What’s more, there are 7 different height positions, ranging between 20-80mm, which is around 10mm lower and higher than any mower we’ve ever reviewed.

Mulching is an option with the supplied plug, but for our mowing we have been using the grass collection bag, made of a durable fabric/hard plastic combo with a capacity of 45l, which is equal to the Karcher and Bosch mowers in this category. Interestingly, however, the fit of the collection bag onto the mower itself is unshakeably tight, as well as being absolutely no trouble to put on and take off. But because that fit is so solid, it seems to push trimmings to the back of the bag more effectively due to the increased air pressure. When the wind flap on the grass collecting bag no longer blows upwards, indicating it’s full, it really is crammed with trimmings all the way to the roof.

Charging and Runtime

The WORX Cordless Lawnmower comes with 2x 20-volt WORX PowerShare lithium-ion batteries that can be recharged on the dual charger supplied, which also has a built-in indicator that lets you know when they’re full. It takes 2hrs to fully recharge the two, which is above the average figure compared to its competitors. However, the mower runtime so impressed us, exceeding the record of every previous cordless lawnmower runtime from one single charge, that we think it can be sensibly understood as to why it takes a pretty minute to re-juice. This WORX Cordless Lawnmower in our testing could cover just over 500sqm on eco mode and 300sqm in turbo mode. This is more than enough in either mode to mow the average-sized European or American lawn, or rather lawns. Of course, the actual runtime will vary depending on the conditions, with factors such as grass height, moisture level, and mowing speed affecting the mower’s performance. But our numbers were produced in harsher conditions than the typical weekly trim, so we are curious if this will indeed result in an even longer runtime when we get into the warmer months with drier and shorter grass to contend with. It’s important to note that a key factor for these impressive runtime numbers is that the WORX Cordless Lawnmower comes with an energy-saving technology called Intellicut that reduces the power consumption of the mower and extends the runtime.

Manoeuvrability Usability

One of the standout features of this mower is its ease of use and manoeuvrability. Starting with ease of use, the WORX Cordless Lawnmower is equipped with a push-button start, which of course eliminates the need for messy gasoline or pulling on a cord. When it comes to manoeuvrability, the WORX Cordless Lawnmower shines and is very well-suited for large lawns. The defined design and cordless operation make it easy to manoeuvre around obstacles, including trees, flower beds and rocks. Its light weight also makes it easy to lift the mower over curbs or even onto a trailer for transport if used by the likes of landscapers, etc. Importantly, its solid and lightweight design and ergonomic handlebars make it easy to push for those with limited strength or mobility, and the wheel design thankfully does allow it to roll over gravel pathways and doesn’t drag the gravel along as is the case with some of the mower designs we have.

Perfromance

With a range of cutting height options and the ability to mow in reverse (whilst still collecting grass), we made the WORX WG743E.1 40V mower undertake the dense and highly congested first cut of the season on a variety of lawn types and conditions, and it never tugged away the mature grass, or needed a single interruption when in turbo mode. We need to stress that this is not a normal experience when using either electric or petrol mowers, and interestingly this WORX mower doesn’t feature the commonplace steel blade but instead uses a composite one, which we’re more familiar being utilised on robot lawnmower designs. Nevertheless, it does appear to be very effective, just munching through thick and tall grass with a high moisture content, whilst still completely resisting any blockages.

Cue the WORX’s Intellicut technology: the key reason why it can deal with such demanding conditions. With some of our grass as tall as 7cm and us steering the WORX occasionally into dense weeds, the motor adjusts the power output to match the type of grass being cut. It’s very audible and the motor is continually revving up and down, optimising energy consumption and power delivery. This feature is present in both turbo and eco modes, but in eco mode it restricts the peak of its performance in order to preserve battery life to a greater extent. With eco mode, you can still achieve a great cut and, with a longer runtime, it’s ideally suited for that regular weekly trim. One of our lawns was treated to more regular cuts so we could see that in this mode, where conditions were regular and we could stride as normal across the lawn, that we were finished a great deal quicker than we are used to, due to the wider deck that allows you to clear more ground with each pass. That faster mowing experience cannot be understated, but the finished lawn is in no way damaged by this haste. This mower leaves a perfectly uniform height of grass, an effective striping from the integrated roller, which also displaces any visible tyre tracks or mowing patterns, and when pushing the mower around the edges of the lawn it did indeed cut without any torn or jagged edges, with a trimmer only necessary where walls and other edge surfaces bulge slightly over the lawn.

Verdict

Efficiency is the key word that best describes the WORX WG743E.1 cordless lawnmower. You can quickly cover a greater area as it sports a wider cutting width than most, its battery runtime is phenomenal, covering 500sqm on eco mode and 300sqm in turbo mode, and the overall deck has a slim profile and a lightweight construction to manoeuvre over all terrain and into tight spaces. Its high-performance delivered not one interruption on our first cut of the season and all our lawns are proficiently uniform after a single cut, making it an ideal choice for both professional and personal use.

Electric lawn mowers have many advantages over gas-powered models. After testing other electric mowers across the country, the EGO LM2102SP POWER 21-Inch Cordless Self-Propelled Mower is our best overall pick because it is very easy to use, lightweight and compact, and offers additional power when you need it, all at a relatively affordable price. Self-propelled mowers make mowing—especially over hills and rugged terrain—much easier because the mower moves for you at your pace, while you simply guide it around your yard. This option is no exception. While we tested this mower, we almost found it too powerful at first, especially because it was our first time using a self-propelled mower. But once we got the hang of it, we turned it off and on easily, and adjusted the speeds when needed by using the levers on the handle. We found the self-propulsion helpful for going up small hills (the lowest speed was all we needed) and turned it off when navigating around obstacles.

And while it only took 50 minutes to mow our lawn, we are happy to report that the battery did not run out. If you have other EGO products at home with the same battery, you could always swap in that battery if you have a larger lawn and want to continue mowing without much of a break.

Other user-friendly features we love include the easily-adjustable handle: You have two options for the height and three options for the angle, so you can pick the one that is most comfortable for you. We also found adjusting the cutting height to be a simple task, with six settings to choose from ranging in height from 1.5 to 4 inches. And when you are done, the handle is just as easy to fold, so you can store your mower vertically in your garage or shed. We do want to note that while we think this mower did a great job mowing in dry and damp conditions, once when mowing over a particularly wet area, an orange light came on and the mower stopped. However, once we moved the mower to a more drier area, we were able to start it again easily. The only other minor issue we reported is putting on the grass collection bag. We found it would be much easier with two people since it clips on tightly and it’s a bit hard to get around the support bar (it popped off a few times during this process). But other than those small issues, we think this is an excellent electric mower for navigating different types of terrain with ease.

How It Performed Long-Term

We’ve been testing this lawn mower for three months and are impressed with its long-lasting battery life. With the ability to mow the lawn three times before requiring a recharge, which only takes around 20 minutes, it is a reliable and efficient machine. This mower can effortlessly handle thick, tall grass and can even manage up to 10 days of uncut grass without any issues. While we initially experienced some issues with the mower stopping and a light running orange while mowing grass, we have since been able to handle damp grass with ease. Overall, this mower is ideal for individuals who may not have the hand or upper body strength to adjust tires or use a pull cord.

We’ve tested the Greenworks Electric Corded Lawn Mower several times over the last few years, and it continues to stand out as the best affordable choice for small yards and tight spaces, even those with somewhat challenging terrain. In fact, while testing this mower in our latest round of testing, we had no issues navigating over divots, clumps, bumps, and other parts of our lawn that were uneven—we found that this mower powered right through them. Plus, the 12-amp motor is powerful enough for tough cutting and mulching, including the tall, spindly weeds in our yard. We didn’t report any issues mowing over slightly wet grass either.

The 20-inch cutting deck is narrower than some other options, but we found that it helped us get through the tight areas of our yard easily. Adjusting the cutting height (seven different heights ranging from 1.5 to 3.75 inches) is simple as well, and really is the only setting you need to worry about. However, we did note that the mower didn’t go quite low enough to cut some patches of clover. Although it’s budget-friendly, we love that you have three options for your grass clippings—bag, mulch, or side discharge—and you don’t have to purchase any of these features separately (which would add to the cost). The grass collection bag was easy to clip on, although we did spill some grass clippings the first time we removed it and noted that the bag was not even full. However, we think this won’t be an issue once we get the hang of it.

Although this electric model is corded, we appreciated the unlimited runtime and didn’t find the cord to be cumbersome. We did find ourselves holding on to the cord even though there was a cord restraint system that kept it in place, but we were able to mow the lawn easily with our other hand. It’s important to note that this mower must be used with a 14-gauge 50-foot extension cord or a 12-gauge 100-foot extension cord (not included). Overall, we found this to be a really easy lawn mower to set up (just a few screws are needed for the handle), use, and store (just fold the handle), and it continues to impress us with its performance and price.

Although it is a little more of a splurge compared to other options we tested, The Ryobi 40V HP Brushless 21 Inch Cordless Self-Propelled Mower stands out for its powerful performance (comparable to some gas models), and long, 70-minute runtime. We tested this mower on the first grass of the season and were quickly impressed by its ease of use and quiet performance (we thought it almost sounded like white noise), especially compared to gas models we’ve used in the past. Thanks to the self-propelled technology, it was a breeze to mow over uneven terrain, even over hills, with little effort on our part. It did take a little bit of time to select the right cutting height for our uneven lawn (the blade did get stuck a few times), but once we adjusted the height, we were impressed by the cutting performance. Luckily this mower offers seven adjustable cutting heights (1.5 to 4 inches), so you can easily pick the one you need. We also want to mention that like our best overall mower, the EGO LM2102SP POWER 21-Inch Cordless Self-Propelled Mower, the self-propelled feature does take some time to get used to, and you may feel like the mower will run away on you at first until you figure out which setting you need for each part of your yard.

This model comes with two 40-volt batteries and a Rapid charger. Since only one battery is needed at a time, you will always have one ready to go should you need it. Our lawn took only 45 minutes to an hour each time to mow, and we never had to stop and recharge it to finish the job. However, we did have to stop the first time we mowed to empty the grass collection bag, which we found to be surprisingly small. It filled up after mowing about 25-30 feet of tall grass. The next two times weren’t as much of an issue because the grass wasn’t as overgrown. It was very simple to remove the full bag, but we found that it spilled easily and a few blades even spilled when the mower was in use (whether or not it was filled.) These few issues aside, we appreciated the bag, mulching, and side-discharge options for the grass clippings overall, although it is worth noting that it did not break up older leaves very well.

Like most of the mowers on this list, the Ryobi 40V HP Brushless 21 Inch Cordless Self-Propelled Mower is easy to fold and store vertically to save space. We were equally impressed with all of the safety features. Although it has a simple, push-button start, the mower has a key that you can store separately so no one can accidentally start the mower. When ready to use, the key has to be inserted behind a flap. Plus, the mower only works while you are gripping a lever. The LED headlights provide extra light that might be helpful when mowing around dusk or dawn. Although this mower is a bit more pricey than our best overall (which is also a battery-powered self-propel model), we think it’s worth the extra cost for the power, long runtime, and extra battery.

How It Performed Long-Term

After three months of use, we can report that this lawn mower has continued to impress us with its ease of use and quiet operation. The self-propelled feature makes navigating hills and uneven terrain a breeze, and we were able to get up to 4 uses out of a single charge. The mower excels at cutting grass and collecting clippings, and while it may struggle with heavier weeds, we had no issues with damp grass. It’s worth noting that the grass bag became heavy with clippings, but overall, we are confident in recommending this lawn mower to anyone in need of a reliable and efficient cutting tool.

While testing, we found that the Sun Joe MJ401E-P2 Electric Lawn Mower was as easy to use as a corded vacuum. At under 30 pounds, this mower is very easy to push, even though it’s not a self-propelled model. It is corded, so you will most likely have to use an extension cord. However, you won’t have to worry about the battery running out, stopping to recharge a battery, or fumes from a gas model. We were also impressed by how quiet this mower was, especially compared to gas mowers we’ve used in the past. This mower was simple to set up—we just had to attach the bag and two parts for the handle.

Thanks to the 14-inch cutting deck, we found this to be a great push mower for navigating around tight corners and spaces. However, we do want to point out a few issues we came across while testing. We found that the grass collection bag filled up pretty quickly (after mowing about 20-30 feet). And when we mowed without the bag, we did notice that the grass would get stuck underneath the blades. As a great safety feature, the mower would immediately shut off. The grass was easy to remove though, and we were able to get back to mowing quickly. Also, it’s worth noting that this mower only has three settings for the cutting height, ranging from 1.12 to 2.52 inches. While you won’t get as a precise cut as other models, and you may have to stop to empty a bag or remove grass from underneath the mower when tackling long grass, we think this is a great budget-friendly push mower that is perfect for small lawns.

How It Performed Long-Term

We are still very satisfied with its performance, even after using it for three months. The grass has grown thicker and longer since we first tested the lawn mower, but we were able to adjust the height of the mower to handle it with ease. Even after it rained, we were able to cut through the grass without any problems. However, it should be noted that the grass catcher bag becomes heavier with damp clippings and more difficult to empty. Although we appreciate not having to refill the mower with gasoline constantly, we believe it would be more convenient if it ran on batteries rather than a cord. Having to connect the extension cord to different outlets in the yard can be a bit inconvenient. All in all, we believe it is a dependable mower for its price.

The electric mower has four steel blades that provide 13 different cutting height positions, ranging from 1.5 to 4.5 inches, for a very precise cut. We found that the mower was able to handle a variety of debris with ease, effectively chopping up sticks, leaves, grass clippings, and even short dandelions that normally would be difficult to cut. The cutting height can be adjusted using a manual lever on the mower‘s right side. However, we did find that the lever was surprisingly close to your leg, which can result in unintentionally changing the cutting height, although we did not experience this issue ourselves.

While putting this battery-powered mower to the test after a rainy morning, we found that it had no trouble dealing with wet grass and cutting it evenly. Even when the grass was damp, the lawn mower effectively discharged the grass clippings. While we love that this mower gives you three options for grass clippings—bag, side-discharge, or mulch—note that you will have to purchase the bagger and mulching kit separately. We were also impressed with the riding mower’s quietness despite its size. When the cutting blades were not moving, the riding mower sound resembled that of a battery-powered ride-on car for kids. And, when the blades were spinning, the noise level was super low compared to traditional gas mowers.

The mower has an onboard LCD screen that lets you check the runtime and charging status and control the LED headlights, drive, and blade speeds. The battery percentage also appears on the digital display menu. You can even monitor the charging status while you are taking a break, using the Ryobi Riding Mower app. We found charging the mower to be a simple process. The battery arrived with just 23 percent charge, and it only took us about an hour to fully recharge. For each mowing session we did, only about 10 percent of the battery was utilized. While we would have preferred a physical speed control lever, we found it manageable to switch while driving. The mower has an accelerator pedal that allows for slow and precise maneuvering around obstacles while providing instant speed when necessary. The mower is also equipped with a backup beeping noise, which is intended as a safety feature but we found it annoying over time.

All in all, the Ryobi 80V HP Brushless 42-inch Battery Riding Lawn Tractor is a great riding mower that offers a quiet and efficient mowing experience that eliminates the hassle of gas and oil. While this isn’t the best choice for small yards, if you want to keep your large yard looking great without a lot of effort, this is an excellent choice with lots of extras.

Ryobi 80V HP Brushless 42-Inch Battery Electric Cordless Zero Turn Riding Mower

Zero-turn mowers are built to be fast and easily navigate obstacles, and the Ryobi Battery Electric Cordless Zero Turn Riding Mower does just that. We put the riding mower through its paces and found it to be a highly intuitive and easy-to-operate machine. Instead of a steering wheel, this riding mower has a joystick that can be operated with just one hand, for better maneuverability while turning. The joystick gave us complete control over the mower’s direction and speed, from a complete stop to top speed. With its impressive turning abilities, we were effortlessly able to mow around trees in a single pass, a task that would have previously required about four passes with a different mower.

Setting the cutting height was equally simple, thanks to the conveniently located lever that offered twelve height settings ranging from 1.5 to 4.5 inches. The mower even comes with a height-stopping key, that allowed us to adjust the mowing deck to our desired cutting height quickly. Overall, the mower did a phenomenal job of cutting the grass evenly. We did encounter some thicker grass areas in the yard, but we found that slowing down the mower’s speed allowed it to power through without any issues. We were able to mow our half-acre yard much faster with this mower compared to the Troy-Built Pony 17 HP 42-inch Deck Rider we previously used. In fact, it took us 40 percent less time to complete the task. It also is much quieter than the gas riding mower, and you don’t have to deal with flammable gas or oil changes.

The RYOBI 80V HP Brushless Riding Mower is equipped with two 80-volt, 10-amp hour batteries and two 40-volt, 12-amp hour batteries, providing ample power for extended mowing sessions. During our testing, we appreciated the ability to install up to three 80-volt and four 40-volt batteries, allowing us to extend the mower’s runtime even further. Charging the batteries was a breeze. We simply had to plug the charging cord into the rear of the mower to simultaneously charge all the onboard batteries. We were also delighted to find out that the 40-volt batteries can be used with different cordless Ryobi tools like trimmers and blowers, expanding the range of our outdoor power equipment collection.

And while it has many of the same features as the Ryobi 80V HP Brushless 42 in. Battery Riding Lawn Tractor, this option has the power equivalent of a 31-horsepower gas engine and the ability to cut up to three acres on a single charge, according to the manufacturer. It also offers an app to monitor the battery status and has an LCD screen onboard so you can control the LED headlights, blade and drive speed, as well as monitor the battery, runtime, and charging status. This is an expensive mower, but we think it is an excellent zero-turn option that will make your lawn look great quickly and efficiently.

How We Tested the Electric Lawn Mowers

We tested eight walk-behind lawn mowers including gas, electric corded, and cordless, battery-powered models in our own yards across the country. After putting them to the test on our own lawns—ranging from small to large—we evaluated them on setup, design, performance, usability, safety, and value. For the first use, we timed setting up the lawn mower and noted what assembly, if any, was required, and if the instructions were detailed and easy to follow. We also recorded the battery charging time if it was a cordless model. We then used the mowers on three separate occasions when the weather and growing conditions allowed and recorded the length of grass cut, the surface area of the yard mowed, and the time it took to accomplish the task. We noted how easy (or not) it was to start the mower, adjust the handle, adjust the speed (if self-propelled), and change the cutting heights. We also evaluated the different features including bagging, mulching, and side-discharge options (if included) for the grass clippings. Aside from evaluating each mower’s set up and features, after use, we noted how easy it was to navigate around obstacles, up slopes, and other challenging areas including uneven or tall grass. We then looked at the appearance of the lawn and noted if it looked evenly cut. We also noted all of the safety features as well as any extra features such as LED headlights, foldable handles for storage, cord management systems, and more. After testing, the top electric mowers were added to this list. In our latest round of testing, we tested six riding lawn mowers in our yards and evaluated them on the same criteria explained above. We conducted thorough testing and compared the results with our previous product recommendations in order to provide the best suggestions possible. We made adjustments to the categories based on standout performance, either by swapping out or adding new options.

What to Look for in an Electric Lawn Mower

Mower Type

Electric mowers fall into four main categories: push, self-propelled, riding, and robot mowers. Choosing the right model depends on the size of your lawn, budget, and how much labor you’re willing to put in. Push mowers require that you walk behind them and manually propel them. Since they lack many of the features that you’ll find on more advanced electric lawn mowers, push mowers tend to cost significantly less. Push mowers also require the most amount of labor, making them an ideal choice for small to medium-sized yards with relatively flat terrain. Self-propelled mowers are equipped with technology that propels the wheels as you mow. Motor Power and Type

Cordless electric mowers that run on batteries produce anywhere from 18 to 20 volts of power. The higher the voltage, the longer the motor will run on a single charge. Likewise, a mower with a higher voltage will allow you to cover more ground in one pass. Higher voltage is usually necessary to mow large lawns and generate enough torque to cut through tall, dense grass. The amp rating is also important in determining how powerful an electric lawn mower is. For example, a 12-amp electric mower can power through tough grass, while a 6-amp model would struggle. Lightweight, highly adjustable, two batteries and gets the job done. what’s not to like?!

Editor’s Note: We reviewed an earlier model, the WORX GT2.0 20V MaxLithium 3-in-1 String Trimmer / Edger / Mower, in 2013 and awarded it a Golden Shovel award based on quality, innovation, performance, and more. The GT Revolution reviewed here is an updated version of the GT2.0.

Are you tired of hauling around a heavy, smelly gas string trimmer? Or tripping over the cord on an electric one? Then the new, redesigned WORX GT Revolution 20V 12” 3-in-1 String Trimmer / Edger / Mini-Mower may be the perfect tool for you.

But first, a little bit of history. Back in 2013, when we reviewed the GT2.0, I’d read some less than positive reviews about an earlier model (the WORX WG155 20V MAX Cordless Lithium 10-Inch String Trimmer/Edger) – about the poor battery life, the difficulty in adjusting it, and the 10″ trimming width. But with the 2013 redesign, WORX fixed these issues and created a terrific tool that more than earned a spot in the garden shed (and on our list of Golden Shovel award winners).

With this new 2018 redesign (called the GT Revolution), WORX has added more features and even improved upon the features and performance of the GT2.0. New features include the Command Feed line dispensing button, onboard spare spool storage, a longer shaft and reduced weight.

The GT Revolution string trimmer comes in two configurations – WG170 (with two 2.0 Ah batteries – that’s what I reviewed) and WG170.1 (with two 4.0 Ah batteries).

For me, comfort and ease of use are of primary concern – and, of course, it has to work as it’s supposed to and not run out of battery power halfway through the job. This redesigned battery-powered string trimmer hits on all fronts.

Before first use, the safety guard must be attached to the trimmer head with the provided screw. The instructions for doing this are not particularly clear so take your time and make sure it looks right before you screw it together. You’ll need a #2 Phillips head screwdriver.

Operating the WORX GT Revolution String Trimmer / Edger / Mini-Mower

Using the WORX trimmer is as simple as sliding in the battery pack and pressing the ‘On’ button. No gas tank to fill, no cord to pull, no trying to find an outdoor electrical outlet. Just press and go.

Of course, you do have to plan ahead to ensure that at least one of the two included battery packs will be charged by the time you need it …

About the CommandFeed

Remember when you had to bump a string trimmer against the ground to advance the string? Or when it would automatically spool out during use but you couldn’t control how much was dispensed?

Well, the GT Revolution takes care of those problems by introducing the CommandFeed system. When you press the CommandFeed button on the handle, the line is automatically fed out of the spool. Press until you hear the line hitting the line cutter on the Safety Guard and then keep trimming, mowing or edging.

There are two things to note, however.

First, the motor stops when you press the button and then restarts when you release it, interrupting your “flow” as you work. I kept having to go back over spots that weren’t trimmed as I moved along the edges of the lawn while depressing the button.

Second, you must leave the Safety Guard in place for the line feed system to work properly (I know some people prefer not to use a Safety Guard). The line is cut to length by the line cutter on the Safety Guard; without it, you cannot control the line length.

The CommandFeed button is perfectly placed where it’s easy to depress with your thumb, even if you have small hands like me. And just in case you run out of line mid-way through a job, you can store a spare spool in the holder that’s attached with hook-and-loop tape to the shaft. Convenient.

I’m still undecided as to whether or not I like CommandFeed. It’s nice not to scalp the lawn by bumping the trimmer or go through an entire spool of string in 10 minutes because the autofeed wasn’t properly adjusted, but it’s disconcerting to have the motor shut off every time I press the CommandFeed button.

The line is automatically fed out of the spool when the Command Feed button is pressed.

Using the WORX String Trimmer

The tool can be used as a regular string trimmer. In this redesigned version, WORX has kept the trimming diameter at a full 12”, allowing you to trim a nice, wide swath.

WORX recommends attaching the support wheels underneath the Safety Guard to keep the trimmer head a safe, consistent distance above the ground. However, the wheels limit you to a very unnatural movement and make for pretty slow going. Don’t bother using the support wheels – just extend the Flower Guard (to prevent you from chopping down your prized petunias) and use it as you would any other string trimmer.

When working along uneven walls or around rocks, you may want to push in the Flower Guard so you can get closer to the object.

Using the Edger

The WORX GT Revolution 3-in-1 string trimmer can be converted into a pretty good edger, although the instructions for how to do this aren’t very clear. Basically, you’ll need to pull on the trimmer head until it moves down the shaft and then twist it into position.

By attaching the wheel assembly onto the side of the trimmer head, you can easily ‘drive’ the edger in a straight line with only one hand.

Using the Mini-Mower

WORX suggests that you can use the trimmer as a mower to get into hard-to-reach places where a lawn mower wouldn’t fit (for example, between or underneath bushes). To do that, they recommend attaching the support wheel underneath the Safety Guard and using the trimmer in a straight backward and forward motion (like using a vacuum cleaner).

That works – sort of. The front of the trimmer head keeps nose-diving as you move back and forth and it’s difficult to move the trimmer where you need it because of the wheel assembly. Don’t bother with the wheels – just use it as a string trimmer and it will get the job done.

Using the Support Wheels

I’ve mentioned the wheels several times already, but what exactly are they?

The WORX GT Revolution Trimmer / Edger / Mini-Mower comes with an optional wheel assembly that’s intended to provide support when the tool is in use. The support wheels slide into plastic slots located in several places on the trimmer head or safety guard, including a handy spot where they can be stored on the tool itself when not in use (a good idea for those of us who tend to lose items that aren’t locked down!).

While the support wheels are helpful when using the tool as an edger, they only get in the way when trimming or mowing. The tool is light enough that the wheels aren’t needed for support.

Plus, unless you keep the plastic slots perfectly clean (not an easy feat), the wheel attachment tends to get stuck when sliding it on or off the machine.

The 4 indicator light options on the charger to show you the battery’s charge status is a nice upgrade since the previous model we reviewed.

V Li-Ion Rechargeable Battery

The two included 20V 2.0 Ah Power Share Li-Ion batteries are an upgrade over previous versions, with an easy-to-read indicator on the end that shows how much charge is left and a large release button that’s much easier to use than on older batteries.

The batteries are fully compatible with over 30 other 20V WORX products so if you already have one or more Power Share batteries, you can buy the GT Revolution without a battery for a much lower cost.

The Li-Ion battery must be fully charged before first use (it is not charged when you purchase it) which supposedly can take up to 9 hours the first time you charge it (mine was fully charged in just under 5 hours). After that, charging should take about 5 hours for the WG170 and 2 hours for the WG170.1 (the WG170.1 comes with a fast charger, unlike the WG170).

And never, never, never try to “squeeze all the juice” out of the battery when it stops working. That’s a sure-fire way to kill the battery. Just put it on the charger and recharge it (this is where the second battery comes in handy!).

If you store your trimmer in a garden shed or other damp spot, you’ll want to store the battery charger somewhere else – water is never a good thing when dealing with electricity.

Runtime Coverage

Runtime (and the amount of lawn you can cover on a single charge) depends on a number of factors, including the density of what you’re trimming or mowing, but mostly on the battery.

WORX recommends the WG170 (with 2.0 Ah batteries) for properties of up to ¼ acre and the WG170.1 (with 4.0 Ah batteries) for larger properties of up to ½ acre.

I have been consistently able to trim and edge our.17-acre property twice on a single charge with the WG170. With the two batteries that are included with the GT Revolution, you should easily be able to cover at least 1/2 acre with the WG170.

Given that the average lawn size for American homes is only about one-fifth of an acre, the WORX GT Revolution trimmer should be more than adequate for most homeowners (Source: Professional Landcare Network; Environmental Protection Agency’s Office of Pesticide Programs fact sheet).

Lightweight

I’ve used a lot of string trimmers and one of my biggest complaints is weight. A heavy tool gets, well, heavy… And that makes trimming or edging a much more difficult job. But the WORX GT Revolution is only 5.5 lbs with the battery installed (the WG170.1 weighs in at 6 lbs with battery onboard). Wow.

Super Adjustable

The feature I like most about the WORX GT Revolution is how easily it adjusts to nearly every position imaginable. And all without any tools.

The trimmer head tilts 90 degrees with only two clicks of the pivot head locking knob (one click to unlock it, a second to lock it). No torquing on it to move it into position.

The shaft length (now a foot longer than previous models) is fully adjustable to suit your height, and the auxiliary handle can be moved into 7 different positions. Between the two, you can easily adjust the tool to the perfect height and angle of use. Both my 5-foot tall friend (well, she claims to be 5’1”) and 6-foot tall husband were able to adjust it to a comfortable length and position.

Users with smaller hands may find the main handle (where the on/off switch is located) to be a little large and, after prolonged use, your hand may start to cramp up.

Storing the String Trimmer

Because of its compact size, it’s easy to store the string trimmer – even in spots where a full-size one wouldn’t fit.

Because the WORX GT Revolution String Trimmer / Edger / Mini-Mower is so adjustable, it can be stored in spaces where other trimmers couldn’t. I keep mine hanging on the wall in my garden shed where it’s out of the way yet easily accessible. If you have limited storage space, you’ll love this feature.

Instruction Manual

In looking at the instruction manual, it’s pretty clear that this string trimmer / edger / mini-mower is targeted at women. All of the drawings show a woman (complete with pony tail) performing the various adjustments and using the tool – all using only one hand while the other hand is placed jauntily on her hip. Given the light weight, simple adjustments, and ease of use, it’s a good trimmer/edger for smaller individuals. But seriously, let’s not make the instructions look like a housewife vacuuming!

Free Lifetime Replacement Spools

As long as you own the GT Revolution, you can get replacement spools for free from WORX, just pay shipping and handling of 8.62 for a package of 6 spools.

The spools are easy to replace but be careful when removing the spool cap (just squeeze the sides and pull up) to ensure you don’t break it (or lose it!).

Warranty

The Worx GT Revolution comes with a 30-day money back guarantee from date of receipt, less shipping and handling (see details here).

It also has a 2-year limited consumer warranty (void if used for commercial purposes). You can extend your warranty to 3 years by registering online within 30 days of purchase. This warranty doesn’t cover parts that are subject to normal wear and tear.

WORX batteries are covered by a 1-year limited consumer warranty and are not eligible for warranty extension.

Recommendation

If you’re looking for a commercial-grade model, this wouldn’t be the string trimmer for you (see our Best Cordless String Trimmers for our recommendations). But if you’re looking for a lightweight, adjustable, and convenient cordless string trimmer, I highly recommend the WORX GT Revolution 20V 12” String Trimmer / Edger / Mini-Mower. It’s easy to use, does a very good job, takes up hardly any space when storing it, and with the two included batteries it runs long enough to cover a ½ acre yard. Of all the weed eaters we’ve reviewed, this is the one I turn to every time.

As a side note, I used the previous model (GT2.0) for three years before giving it to a neighbor when we moved – he tells me it’s still going strong and he uses it every week.

Worx Nitro 80V Lawn Mower

If you haven’t already heard, Worx has entered the realm of high-voltage lawn mowers, and they’ve made it official with the release of a 21-inch self-propelled model, the Worx Nitro 80V lawn mower. Notably, this model utilizes the new Power Share battery system, which offers cross-compatibility spanning their 20V, 40V, and 80V Nitro landscape.

And thus, we arrive at the million-dollar question: Does this cordless mower have the features and power needed to effectively replace the gas tank? As always, OPE has the answer.

Worx Nitro 80V Lawn Mower Performance

First, let’s look at how you fire up the Worx Nitro 80V lawn mower. In place of the annoying, even strenuous, pull-start associated with gas engines, you have easy, two-step electric ignition.

In terms of actual mowing performance, this tool takes advantage of the Worx Intellicut system, a feature that senses grass thickness and adjusts torque accordingly. The primary benefit here is longer battery life and, in turn, extended runtime.

Furthermore, the variable speed control enables you to fine-tune the forward drive to match your walking pace.

For our tests, we put the Worx Nitro 80V lawn mower up against an assortment of grasses, such as St. Augustine, Floratam, Bahia Grass, and a relentless yard nuisance known as weeds.

During a standard 1.5-inch maintenance cut, a fully charged battery gave us roughly 48 minutes of runtime. This is ample for yards up to half an acre.

When it comes to disposal, the WG761 can either bag or mulch the clippings. To switch between the two modes, simply use the quick-change lever. What’s more, removing a mulch plug will be a thing of the past.

Lastly, a collapsable main handle makes for compact vertical storage.

Worx Nitro 80V Lawn Mower Design

Driven by a brushless motor, this model is the first Worx product to generate its rated voltage using four 20V (5.0Ah) batteries combined in a single 4A 4-port charger/power supply. And it packs quite a punch, making it significantly more powerful than lightweight counterparts like the Worx 40V 17-inch mower.

Editor’s Note: Intended to run on a combined 80V, this mower requires all four batteries to operate.
