Benner | 2018-02-09 | 21:40 | United States | Buckhorn Campground, San Gabriel Mountains, Los Angeles County, California | 2000 | call | Rapid Male advertising toots recorded at a north-facing slope with a thick forest of white fir, Jeffrey pine, incense cedar, sugar pine, and white alder. The mic was aimed about 40 degrees off to the side of the bird during the recording. Northern Saw-whet Owl (Aegolius acadicus) | 0:43 | Lance A. M. Benner | 2017-01-03 | 18:51 | United States | Big Santa Anita Canyon, San Gabriel Mountains, Los Angeles County, California | 600 | call | Male toots in response to playback. The calls are at a somewhat higher frequency than normal for this species--usually they're at about 1100 Hz. Recorded in a deep canyon with canyon live oak, coast live oak, bigleaf maple, and California bay. Loud noise from a passing airplane is also audible. Equipment: Sony PCM-M10 recorder, Sennheiser ME62 microphone, and a Telinga 22 inch parabola. Edits to the file: cropped at both ends and amplified by 20 dB. The low cut filter on the microphone was off.

Northern Saw-whet Owl (Aegolius acadicus) | 0:40 | Lance A. M. Benner | 2016-12-17 | 17:36 | United States | Big Santa Anita Canyon, San Gabriel Mountains, Los Angeles County, California | 600 | call | Male advertising toots. Initially heard calling spontaneously, but when they stopped, I whistled for about 20 seconds, and the sounds resumed. This recording was obtained about one minute after the calls started again. The recording is somewhat faint and is easier to hear with headphones, earbuds, or an external speaker. Uploaded primarily for documentation because this is an unusually low elevation for this species in the San Gabriel Mountains. Habitat: deep canyon with dense trees in many areas and chaparral on south-facing slopes. The bird was recorded in an area with canyon live oak, California bay, bigleaf maple, white alder, and scattered bigcone Douglas-fir. Equipment: Sony PCM-M10 and a Sennheiser ME67 microphone with the low cut filter off. Edits to the file: trimmed at the end and amplified by 6.5 dB.

Northern Saw-whet Owl (Aegolius acadicus) | 1:55 | Lance A. M. Benner | 2016-12-17 | 17:39 | United States | Big Santa Anita Canyon, San Gabriel Mountains, Los Angeles County, California | 600 | alarm call, call | Multiple sounds by at least two northern saw-whet owls. The monotonous toots are male advertising calls. The sharp "ksew, ksew" and wavering wails are also saw whet sounds that could be made by either sex. One saw-whet was making the toots spontaneously when I arrived on my mountain bike. I got a recording and then the sounds stopped. I whistled an imitation for roughly 20 seconds and then the toots resumed. Three minutes later the other sounds started. The sounds are relatively soft and it helps to use earbuds or headphones to hear the recording. Uploaded to document the variety of sounds and the presence of this species at an unusually low elevation where they are seldom recorded in Los Angeles County. There are also human voices from two hikers in the recording. Equipment: Sony PCM-M10 recorder and a Sennheiser ME67 microphone with the low-cut filter off (unfortunately--this introduced noise from wind). Edits to the file: trimmed at the end and amplified by 10 dB.

The bird initially vocalized with soft, long, wails and then switch to male advertising toots. Habitat: California black, oak, incense cedar, Coulter pine, gray pine, bigcone Douglas fir, and montane chaparral. Recorded with a Sony PCM-M10 recorder, Sennheiser ME62 microphone, and a Telinga 22 inch parabolic dish. Edits to the file: trimmed at the end and amplified by 10 dB.

Northern Saw-whet Owl (Aegolius acadicus) | 0:37 | Lance A. M. Benner | 2015-12-03 | 22:09 | United States | Switzer's Picnic Area, San Gabriel Mountains, Los Angeles County, California | 1100 | call | Downward-slurring, wavering wail. Recorded on a north-facing slope in an area that partially burned in 2009. Many trees in the area where I heard the owl are dead. Most of the trees where the bird was calling are bigcone Douglas firs, but the area also has canyon and coast live oak, California sycamore, white alder, Coulter pine, and chaparral. There is a brook at the base of the canyon. The volume of the vocalizations is low but this is a relatively uncommon sound by this species so I wanted to upload this to document it. This is also an unusually low elevation for this species in the San Gabriel Mountains. Same bird as in XC294084 Heard in response to playback of winter sounds from the Voices of North American Owls CD. Equipment: Olympus LS-10S and a Sennheiser MKE-400 microphone. Modifications to the file: cropped and amplified by 20 dB.

Benner | 2015-06-22 | 21:43 | United States | Buckhorn Campground, San Gabriel Mountains, Los Angeles County, California | 2000 | call | Recorded on a north-facing, thickly-vegetated slope with white fir, incense cedar, white alder, Jeffrey pine, and sugar pine. Initially the bird produced a chittering sound as it flew over us. Then it whined loudly. Finally it produced the toots that are audible in this recording. Recorded at a distance of roughly 30 meters. A western screech owl and a flammulated owl were also vocalizing at the same time, although the flammulated owl is only barely audible on the recording. Northern Saw-whet Owl (Aegolius acadicus) | 0:43 | Tim Spahr | 2015-01-06 | 18:00 | United States | Northborough, Worcester County, Massachusetts | 80 | song | Quite a good year for NSWO here. A local patch, very calm and quiet (15 deg f). Birds using field edges lined with dense small pines. Quite an array of sounds heard this evening. This clip is some sort of fairly quiet extremely rapid song, something I'd not heard before. This bird was seen and buzzed me in response to scream tapes. It began this song rendition in response to the screams.
