Northern Saw-whet Owl (Aegolius acadicus) | 0:26 | Lance A. M. Benner | 2017-11-07 | 21:06 | United States | Angeles Crest Highway mile 60.7, San Gabriel Mountains, Los Angeles County, California | 2100 | call | Soft "seet" calls recorded at a range of about five meters while the bird was perched in a Jeffrey pine. This is an uncommon vocalization. The bird made this sound for more than three minutes but stopped about 40 seconds after we saw it with a light. Photos. The location is on a northwest-facing slope with Jeffrey pine, white fir, sugar pine, and montane chaparral. Equipment: Sony PCM-M10 recorder and a Sennheiser ME67 microphone. Edits to the file: trimmed, one very short section deleted, and normalized to -3 dB. Other sounds that are audible: brief hoots by a great horned owl, human voices, handling noise, RFI from a cell phone, rustling from a coat, and whistling by one of us to imitate male northern saw-whet advertising calls. The cadence of the owl vocalizations picked up a bit during the whistles.

Benner | 2017-11-03 | 22:27 | United States | Angeles National Forest, Angeles Crest Highway mile 44.0, Los Angeles County, California | 1500 | alarm call, call | Loud "whining" calls, also called "screams" by some authors. Recorded at a range of about 25 meters while the bird was perched in a canyon live oak. Faint hoots by a great horned owl are barely audible near the end. Equipment: Sony PCM-M10 recorder and a Sennheiser ME67 microphone. Edits: trimmed and normalized to -3 dB, which increased the volume quite a bit.

Northern Saw-whet Owl (Aegolius acadicus) | 1:31 | Lance A. M. Benner | 2017-11-03 | 22:21 | United States | Angeles National Forest, Angeles Crest Highway mile 44.0, Los Angeles County, California | 1500 | alarm call, call | "Ksew" and "whining" calls. The latter sounds are also referred to as screams by some authors. Recorded at a range of about 5 meters while the bird was perched in a canyon live oak. Equipment: Sony PCM-M10 recorder and a Sennheiser ME67 microphone. The microphone was pointed about 150 degrees from the bird during the first two vocalizaitons, accounting for their lower volume, and then directly at the bird afterward. Edits: trimmed and normalized to -3 dB.

Benner | 2017-03-16 | 20:16 | United States | Angeles Crest Highway mile 60.7, San Gabriel Mountains, Los Angeles County, California | 2100 | call | Male advertising toots recorded near the top of a ridge with Jeffrey pine, sugar pine, white fir, canyon live oak, and montane chaparral. Natural vocalizations. The pitch of these toots seems higher than usual for this species, at least in my experiece: the peak frequency is at about 1300 Hz but normally it's at around 1100 Hz. The sounds also cover a total frequency range of close to 200 Hz. Equipment: Sony PCM-M10, Sennheiser ME62, and a Telinga 22 inch parabola. Low-cut filter was on. Edits to the file: none.

Northern Saw-whet Owl (Aegolius acadicus) | 1:30 | Taylor Sturm | 2017-02-18 | 04:30 | United States | Syosset area, Nassau County, New York | 70 | song | NSWO singing in response to my whistled impression of a NSWO song. Singing from an area of thickets comprised of a considerable shrub layer. Few trees greater than 20' tall. Some white pine but dominantly deciduous. Bird may have been sitting in a white pine, or perhaps just behind it. Seemed to be singing from about 12'-15' up. Absolutely perfect listening conditions: 30F and still with clouds. Recording made with Olympus VN 8100 PC and Sennheiser MKE 300 mic. Amplified and high pass filter applied. Cropped to remove some erroneous noises by me.

Northern Saw-whet Owl (Aegolius acadicus) | 0:43 | Lance A. M. Benner | 2017-01-07 | 06:38 | United States | Twilight Campground entrance road, Pinaleno Mountains, Graham County, Arizona | 2300 | alarm call | Agitation whines heard in response to playback. Obtained in morning twilight about 40 minutes before sunrise. Identified as a male by extensive toots that the bird made after this recording ended. Equipment: Sony PCM-M10 recorder and a Sennheiser ME67 microphone with the low-cut filter off. Unfortunately, the sensitivity on the PCM-M10 was bumped to the "low" setting so I amplified the recording by 30 dB to make it easier to hear. The file was also trimmed at both ends. Habitat: montane forest with a mixture of pines, oaks, and alders. North side of the Pinaleno Range (also known locally as Mt. Graham).
