Best Gas Hedge Trimmers of 2023 [Reviews]

Bushes add shape, character, and privacy to your landscape, but what if they need a haircut? In this article, we’ll run down the top 10 gas-powered hedge trimmers to help you pick the right tool for the job.

To rank the top gas-powered hedge trimmer we compared blade length, cutting diameter, engine size, weight, and price.

We also rolled blade length (the longer the blade, the more you can cut at once) and cutting diameter (how wide a branch your machine can saw through) into a cutting capacity measurement to give you a sense of how many twigs you can cut off in one stroke.

SENIX HT4QL-L 26.5 cc 4-stroke gasoline hedge trimmer

Best Overall

SENIX HT4QL-L gas hedge trimmer

The SENIX HT4QL-L hedge trimmer, our overall champ, has it all — power, ease of use, and price. Only downside? It’s heavy.

The Senix HT4QL-L kicks off our list with a bang. This gas-powered hedge trimmer has a big 26.5 cc engine to give you extra power for cutting shrubs quickly. The 4-stroke engine runs smoothly without having to mix oil and gas.

With a cutting diameter of 1.1 inches, this machine is perfect for anyone with large woody shrubs and small trees. The swiveling rear handle also makes for easy trimming at a variety of angles.

This hedge trimmer also beats out other brands because of the cost. The trimmers on our scale run between 150 and 550, and this one’s well on the cheaper end.

The only drawback to this hedge trimmer is the weight. At 13 pounds, this is the heaviest cutter you’ll find in our top 10.

If you’re looking for power at a low price, this hedge trimmer is for you. If you want yard work to be easier on your muscles, shop around.

  • Blade length: 22 in
  • Cutting diameter: 1.1 in

XtremepowerUS 26 cc gas 2-stroke cycle hedge trimmer

Runner-Up

XtremepowerUS hedge trimmer

This XtremepowerUS hedge trimmer has a lot of cutting power for a fairly modest cost.

This XtremepowerUS hedge trimmer packs a lot of cutting capacity for a very low price. We’re impressed with the 24-inch blade length and full inch of cutting diameter. The dual-action serrated blades cut back and forth cleanly.

The commercial grade 25.4 cc engine gives this handheld gas hedge trimmer a lot of power, however you wouldn’t know it by the decibels. This model is low noise, and perfect for anyone living too close to their neighbors.

Our favorite part of the XtremepowerUS model is the price. We categorize this model in the “inexpensive” bracket, making it a great value.

Much like the Senix, this hedge trimmer’s major drawback is its weight. With this much power and cutting capacity, you’re sure to give your arms a workout.

  • Blade length: 24 in
  • Cutting width: 1 in
  • Engine size: 26 cc
  • Weight: 16 lbs

Got thick hedges? The Poulan Pro PR2322’s 1-inch cutting diameter makes it easy to trim up and shape up thick hedges.

The Poulan Pro PR2322 is a gas hedge trimmer that cuts an impressive 1-inch diameter, making it ideal for larger shrubs. Its serrated, double-sided blade will make quick work of excess foliage.

This model also comes with useful features, such as anti-vibration technology that makes for easier handling, and the swiveling handle allows for greater maneuverability.

This little hedge trimmer loses a few points for raw power. Its 23 cc engine is eclipsed by other trimmers on our list.

However, the Poulan Pro PR2322 is also very affordable and lightweight. This is a great gas-powered trimmer if you are on a tight budget or looking to save your back during chores.

  • Blade length: 22 in
  • Cutting diameter: 1 in
  • Engine size: 23 cc

EASYG 23.6 cc gas hedge trimmer

Great Value

EASYG 23.6 cc gas hedge trimmer

This EASYG, the most affordable hedge trimmer on our list, is also lightweight, quiet, and easy to use. It’s a great value.

As its EASYG name might suggest, this hedge trimmer ranks high on ease of use. It starts up quickly and the internal shock absorbers keep vibrations from wearing out your arms. We like that it comes with a pair of work gloves, tool kit, and a gas can. You have everything you need to get started.

The EASYG is also quiet, a plus if you live in a neighborhood with close neighbors.

Overall, this hedge trimmer is a great value. This is the most affordable hedge trimmer on our list. For the price, you get a double-sided blade and mid-range attributes in engine power, blade size, and weight.

Echo HCS-2810 Gas Hedge Trimmer

The really long blade on this Echo hedge trimmer makes it perfect for trimming large bushes or if you prefer a wider cutting swath.

This Echo hedge trimmer features a long cutting blade. It’s ideal for anyone with large bushes to trim, or anyone who favors a wider cutting swath.

We also love the lightweight design. This machine is perfect for anyone who wants a strong cutting blade without the added weight. The cutting diameter is right in the mid range and the double-sided blades allow for versatile cutting styles.

The Echo has only a couple of major drawbacks. The engine is on the smaller end of the spectrum, so you might sacrifice some cutting power. This hedge trimmer is also a little more expensive. While not the priciest model on our list, it’s far from the most affordable.

  • Blade length: 28 in
  • Cutting diameter: 0.75 in
  • Engine size: 21.2 cc
  • Weight: 13 lbs
  • Double-sided blades
  • Price range: medium

✗ Could be more powerful✗ Medium price range

Craftsman CMXGHAMD25HT Hedge Trimmer

We love the Craftsman CMXGHAMD25HT’s cutting power, which makes it a Smart pick for trimming taller bushes.

This Craftsman is a versatile hedge trimmer capable of shaping a wide range of shrubs. Even though the blade is a short 22 inches, the extension option allows for considerable reach. You wouldn’t want this if you need a wide cutting swath, but it’s perfect for taller bushes and hedges.

We also love the engine power. This hedge trimmer comes with some serious cutting torque, and the price tag isn’t bad either.

The biggest sacrifice you’ll make for this machine is weight. This hedge trimmer is well on the heavy end and best if you don’t mind putting a little extra effort into your yard work. The cutting width is pretty standard, so if you have particularly thick plants to hack through, you might look at other models.

  • Blade length: 22 in
  • Cutting diameter: 0.75 in
  • Engine size: 25 cc
  • Weight: 18.36 lbs
  • Double-sided blades
  • Price range: inexpensive

Husqvarna 966532302 gas hedge trimmer

This Husqvarna hedge trimmer is lightweight, affordable, and has a wide cutting diameter. It’s a bargain.

This Husqvarna gas-powered hedge trimmer has a lot going for it. We appreciate the wide cutting diameter. If you have thicker branches to cut, this might be a good choice. This model is also lightweight and can make your weekend chores easier. On top of all that, this well-balanced hedge trimmer is a real bargain.

What do you sacrifice for all that value? This Husqvarna hedge trimmer has one of the shortest blade lengths in our top 10. This means you’re not going to be able to cut as much at one time. The engine is also on the smaller side, so this model won’t have quite the same cutting torque as some of the larger tools.

  • Blade length: 18 in
  • Cutting diameter: 0.8 in
  • Engine size: 21.7 cc
  • Weight: 10.36 lbs
  • Double-sided blades
  • Price range: inexpensive

Salem Master gasoline hedge trimmer

The very affordable Salem Master hedge trimmer has a nice balance of attributes: power, cutting diameter, and blade length.

The Salem Master Cordless Hedge Trimmer is a great model for a homeowner looking for an all-around good value. The blade length, cutting diameter, and engine size are all in the midrange, making this an effective machine for a wide range of hedge trimming needs. It’s also very affordable.

The biggest drawback for this hedge trimmer is its weight. At over 18 pounds, you’ll get a workout hauling this machine around your yard. But, if you don’t mind lifting a little, you’ll find this to be a strong gas-powered hedge trimmer at a decent price.

  • Blade length: 22 in
  • Engine size: 22.4 cc
  • Cutting diameter: 0.75 in
  • Weight: 18.3 lbs
  • Double-sided blades
  • Price range: inexpensive

HUYOSEN 7.2V hedge trimmer

With its affordable price and powerful engine, the Huyosen cordless hedge trimmer can easily cut through tough branches.

This low-cost Huyosen cordless hedge trimmer packs an impressive engine, giving you plenty of sawing power to cut through hard branches. We also like the comfortable design. The shock absorption and ergonomic handle make this Huyosen easy to use.

The downsides? Just like the previous model on our list, this trimmer is on the heavier side, weighing in at just over 18 pounds. Additionally, its low cutting diameter can make it a little harder to get through the thickest of twigs.

  • Blade length: 23 in
  • Cutting diameter: 0.66 in
  • Engine size: 25 cc
  • Weight: 18.16 lbs
  • Double-sided blades
  • Price range: inexpensive

Husqvarna 122HD60 hedge trimmer 9665324-02

The quick-starting Husqvarna 122HD60 hedge trimmer is lightweight and low-noise. Only drawback? Its weight.

The Husqvarna 122HD60 hedge trimmer grabs the last spot on our list with a strong balance of mid-range attributes. The blade is long enough to saw through large shrubs, and the price is comfortably in the center of the pack. We also like the shock absorption on this outdoor power tool, which makes cutting easier on your hands and arms.

Downsides? This hedge trimmer is a little on the heavier side, and it could pack a little more engine power.

Overall, we wouldn’t recommend this hedge trimmer if you want the lightest, most affordable, or most powerful tool, but for an all-around winner, this may be the Smart choice for you.

Buyers Guide

Do you need a gas-powered hedge trimmer?

Hedge trimmers will use one of three main sources of power. If you’re new to buying these outdoor power tools, this will help you narrow down your search.

Corded Electric: This simply means you have an extension cord running from your machine into an outlet on the side of your house. These models are typically affordable, powerful, and easier on the environment than gas power.

However, you have to drag the cord around behind you without tripping yourself. If you have a very large yard, this might be a problem.

Battery Power: Battery-powered hedge trimmers have much more portability than corded models and are low on carbon emissions. However, they often lack the power that you’ll get with a gas trimmer.

Gas Engine: Gas hedge trimmers are just as powerful as corded electric and just as portable as battery powered. They can usually hold enough fuel for long outdoor sessions.

There are a couple drawbacks, though. Gas-powered trimmers are typically worse for the environment. They also include the additional costs of fuel and engine maintenance. Lastly, these little machines get pretty loud. You may want to go with another power source if any of these is a deal breaker.

Gas hedge trimmers: key metrics

If you have never bought a hedge trimmer before, you may not be familiar with all the terms. Don’t worry, we can provide a thorough explanation of each of these stats.

Blade Length: If you have a lot of hedge trimming to do, you’ll need a long blade. The length of the blade tells you the size of the cut you can make with each stroke. Blade lengths usually range from 21 to 38 inches.

Cutting Diameter: This lets you know the thickest branch your gas-powered hedge trimmer can easily cut. If you have large or particularly woody shrubs, you’ll need a wider cutting diameter to finish your hedge trimming.

Engine Size: To get a lot of cutting done, you’ll need a powerful engine. We measure the size of the engine in cubic centimeters. While size is not a perfect measurement of power, it is a pretty strong indicator.

However, keep in mind, the larger the engine, the more weight.

Weight: Gas hedge trimmers range in weight from about 10 pounds to nearly 20 pounds. Your hedge trimmer’s weight will make it easier or harder for you to get your chores done depending on how much you’re willing to lift.

Price: Gas hedge trimmers vary considerably in price, so you’ll need to decide how much to budget beforehand. We didn’t include exact of these hedge trimmers because they change frequently.

FAQ About Gas Hedge Trimmers

By our count, you can find the optimal combination of power, cutting diameter, blade length, weight, and cost with the SENIX HT4QL-L. We consider this the best gas powered hedge trimmer on the market right now.

Our list includes models by Echo, Senix, Poulan, Shindaiwa, and more. However, if you really want to shop around, we can recommend a few more companies making hedge trimmers. STIHL, Husqvarna, and Tanaka also make excellent cutters.

This depends on your needs. If you have a small yard, a corded electric hedge trimmer will do just fine. However, if you have a lot of ground to cover — and lots of hedges to trim, you may want that extra portability and power that is found with a gas-powered machine. Gas hedge trimmers also rank high on durability.

Some hedge trimmers will have better fuel systems than others. The average gas trimmer will keep puttering for at least 40 minutes and sometimes up to an hour.

Conclusion

Now that you’re familiar with our top 10 gas-powered hedge trimmers and have answers to some of your likely questions, we hope you feel comfortable choosing the right piece of equipment to keep your shrubs neat and trim.

When buying a hedge trimmer, keep these three things in mind: your budget, the size of your yard, and the number of shrubs on your property.

All of the models on our list are available from well-known retailers, but if you decide you want a professional to keep those shrubs trimmed for you, we can help you find a landscaper near you.

Electric Hedge Trimmers vs. Gas Powered

One of the first choices you have to make when purchasing a hedge trimmer is whether you want a gas-powered trimmer or an electric one. In order to make this decision, you’re going to need to know what kinds of jobs it’s going to be used for. If you’re working for a commercial outdoor cleanup company, or have a lot of land to get through, you’re going to want to take a look into gas-powered trimmers. If you’re just looking for something to help keep your lawn looking nice, then an electric or battery powered trimmer will be a great fit. In order to help you make the decision between gas power and electric, this article is going to take a look at some of the pros and cons of both options.

Gas Powered Hedge Trimmers

Gas-Powered hedge trimmers are going to be where it’s at if you’re looking for a lot of power. Generally, they are capable of cutting through thicker branches than their electric counterparts, sometimes up to 1” thick.

They are also often capable of cutting more quickly than other trimmers. This allows you to complete your tasks even more quickly than if you used an electric hedge trimmer. Because they have no cords and require no outlets, gas-powered hedge trimmers are easy to maneuver and use anywhere you need them. They also have less of a problem being used in damp weather.

Alongside the positive aspects of gas-powered hedge trimmers, it’s important to note that they are heavier than electric trimmers, which means you may tire out more quickly using them. They usually aren’t emission free, making them less friendly to the environment. These machines require a mixture of gasoline and oil in order to run, which can add to their overall cost. They do tend to be more expensive up front due to the added power and need for a limited fuel supply.

Overall, gas-powered hedge trimmers are going to be great for large jobs. If you need to cover a lot of land, gas power is a great choice. It’s also the way to go if you’re working on land that hasn’t been cleaned up in a long time, as the branches may have grown thicker. For the big jobs, it’s absolutely worthwhile to take a look into the gas-powered options available.

Electric Hedge Trimmers

While hedge trimmers powered by electricity or a battery may not be quite as powerful as gas-powered hedge trimmers, they’re still incredibly useful for the kinds of trimming jobs most people need to do.

Depending on the model, electric hedge trimmers can cut through branches that are 1/4” to 1/2” thick with ease. These trimmers don’t require any fuel to work; they only need to be plugged in or have a charged battery inserted into them. They produce no emissions, therefore keeping the environment cleaner and healthier while you accomplish your tasks.

Electric hedge trimmers tend to be less expensive than gas-powered trimmers, and on top of that, you don’t have to worry about purchasing oil or gasoline. They tend to be a lot quieter, so you don’t need hearing protection and can do your work without disturbing your neighbors. These trimmers are a lot more lightweight, making them easier to work with and less likely to cause any strain to your body.

If an electric hedge trimmer is what interests you, you will then have to make the choice between a corded or cordless trimmer, which have some differences of their own. While corded trimmers are the more powerful of the two, the cord can often get in the way. Battery-powered hedge trimmers don’t have that problem, but do come with the risk of running out of battery before your task is completed. In either case, it’s very important to make sure you do your research on the kind of trimmer you want before making a purchase.

Conclusion

Overall, the decision between a gas-powered hedge trimmer or an electric trimmer is based on the size of the job that needs to be done. If you are working on a lot of land with larger branches, then you’re going to need the power of a gas-powered hedge trimmer. However, if you’re working at home and the job you need to complete is a small or medium-sized task, electric hedge trimmers will give you the perfect balance of cost-efficiency and power. Many commercial outdoor cleanup companies use gas because they have to cover a lot of ground and need the power. They also don’t have the time to make sure they have an outlet or extension cord available, or the time to take breaks to wait for a battery to charge. At home, those abilities are more available and allow you to save money on having to buy gasoline and oil. Electric hedge trimmers are also going to be more lightweight, allowing you to be more comfortable as you get your yard looking magnificent.

Regardless of what you choose, a hedge trimmer is sure to make your job easier. They allow you to wield the power and speed that will keep you from having to spend hours trimming the hedges or bushes by hand. That way, you’ll have much more time to FOCUS on doing things you enjoy. Hedge trimmers are a wonderfully useful tool that take a lot of the stress and discomfort out of cleaning up your yard. You don’t have to worry about causing a strain to your back, shoulders or arms by trimming each branch manually, and with the electric models available, you can have all this ease and comfort without making the environment pay the price. In any case, if you find you’re still having trouble deciding among the hedge trimmer options, it’s always a good idea to talk to a professional wherever you plan to purchase your machine about what your needs are. That way, you’re sure to get exactly what you need for your set of circumstances.

Product Description

Redmax is a less popular brand than the others we looked at, therefore we didn’t include it in our reviews. Even though this brand isn’t as well-known as others, the quality of its items is unmatched. The Redmax CHT220L hedge trimmer is another great option for those looking for the finest gas hedge trimmers.

The cutting blade of this gas-powered hedge trimmer is 24 inches in length, and the engine has a displacement of 21.7cc.

The longer reach is provided by the 23-inch blade. The extended blade makes it much simpler to shape tall, out-of-reach shrubs and hedges. In addition, the cutter bar has two cutting edges so that it can be used from either side. You’ll be able to cut with greater precision.

You should be very careful with it because of the long, sharp blade and the fact that it may be used on both sides.

The engine is reliable, but it lacks the power necessary to operate the lengthy cutting blade. The Redmax brand might benefit from a more powerful motor and a longer cutting blade.

The Redmax CHT220L trimmer’s adjustable rear handle is another strong point. There are three locations for the back handle, allowing for a variety of uses and approaches. This trimmer has adjustable settings, so you may use it as it works best for you.

Redmax products now have a protective bar for added peace of mind. Even though there are safeguards in place, the product should still be handled with care. In addition, the machine generates 0.8 horsepower.

To that list, I would add the Echo HC-155 hedge trimmer. New to the market is the gasoline-powered Echo HC-155, which offers a number of advantages over competing models. This expert-grade solution is just what you need to get those plants under control. Help yourself to the 21.2cc 2-stroke gas engine that powers this tool and go to work trimming those hated hedges.

The HC-155 is preferable since it produces a cleaner cut. When you use this method, you may quickly get the clean cut you’re after. This hedge trimmer weighs 11.5 pounds and features a double-edged blade. The 24 inch length of its two-sided blade makes it ideal for cleaning in tight spaces.

The HC-155 from the Echo brand is built to last and features a sturdy body, powerful engine, and sharp blade made from the highest quality materials. This machine will last for a long time due to its sturdy build.

In addition, safety guards are installed for the user’s protection. Since this safety feature is so little, it is not a good choice. Like other common gas hedge trimmers, the Echo HC-155 features a pair of handles. These ergonomically designed handles make holding the trimmer a breeze.

It’s possible, nevertheless, that this product will vibrate ever-so-slightly when you use it. To lessen the impact of the vibration, you might use a pair of gloves. Also, gloves will shield your hands from any projectiles. In addition to the usual safety gear, hearing protection is highly recommended when using this hedge trimmer.

The HC-155 looks the same as other Echo hedge trimmers. This device is not for you if you are hoping to find anything truly original. In spite of its unattractive exterior, it is a competent tool for trimming hedges.

What to Look for in a Quality Gas-Powered Hedge Trimmer

Blade length, teeth spacing, and weight all play significant roles in a hedge trimmer’s performance, alongside the engine speed and power. Read on to find out more about these and other crucial aspects of a hedge trimmer.

Width of the Blade and Distance Between the Teeth

To get a clean cut, a trimmer’s user just waves the tool back and forth, as the trimmer’s teeth are on both sides.

The length of a trimmer blade can be anything from 18 to 20 inches. Because of the larger length of the longer blade, more vegetation may be trimmed in one motion. In addition, it facilitates more consistent slicing, which is essential for shaping boxwood hedges. Longer trimmers are more difficult to control than their shorter counterparts due to their greater length. Another disadvantage is that they are more difficult to steer in confined locations, such as around the base of a bush or shrub. Most gardeners may get by with an 18-inch trimmer, but those who tend to huge hedges will want to invest in a lengthier unit.

Cut branches that fall into the space between the blade’s scissor-like teeth. How thick of a branch the trimmer can cut depends on the distance between the blade’s teeth. Typically, the blade separation on professional-grade hedge clippers is one inch or more, allowing them to easily slice through thicker branches and gnaw through more solid matter. Gardeners often use trimmers with cutting diameters between 3/8 inch and 3/4 inch.

Velocity and Force of the Engine

A gas-powered hedge trimmer has more power than its electric counterpart and can trim larger areas of hedge and vegetation more quickly.

The speed of the engine in a gas trimmer determines how much work it can do, and this is quantified in terms of the volume of air and fuel that the engine is able to displace each minute. The larger the engine’s ccs rating, the more forceful it will be. The typical size of the engine in a gas-powered trimmer is between 21 and 25 cc. When powered by more potent motors, longer blades can swiftly slash through thicker foliage and trim branches with greater diameters.

The cutting power of a trimmer depends on a number of factors beyond the engine speed alone. With longer blades, more power is needed to move the cutters. A trimmer with a 23-inch blade and a 23.7-cc engine may not be as effective as one with an 18-inch blade and a 21.7-cc motor.

Fuel Capacity

The length of time a trimmer may operate before needing a fuel refill is directly related to the volume of the fuel tank. Larger yard maintenance projects need greater capacity to avoid delays caused by the need to refuel. Trimmers typically feature a 13-ounce tank, which provides around an hour of run time. Remember that bigger engines consume fuel at a faster rate than their smaller counterparts.

Lightness and Convenience of Use

The trimmer’s portability is greatly affected by its weight. While a heavy trimmer may be cumbersome to lift and move around, a light one will be easy to work with and won’t wear out the user as soon. The typical weight of a gas-powered trimmer is between 10 and 14 pounds.

Not only does trimmer weight have an impact on how simple it is to use, but there are other considerations as well. Gas trimmers feature pull starters just like gas lawn mowers, leaf blowers, and chainsaws. Many companies now provide options for their products that make it less difficult to start the engine from a cold start.

Vibration from gas trimmer engines is also a major contributor to tired arms and hands. Vibration dampening devices are included in certain hedge trimmers, making them more pleasant to use for longer periods of time.

The trimmer’s handles can also make a significant impact. The trigger and primary control for a trimmer are located on its back handle, which is also where the device’s blade is stored. Wraparound handles near the blades make many trimmers easier to control and more versatile, as the user may adjust their grip to achieve varied cutting angles. Having a trimmer with a rotating trigger handle makes it much simpler to make cuts at an angle.

Safety Features

Hedge trimmers are inherently hazardous because of their numerous sharp teeth designed to chop through branches. Many are built with safeguards to protect the user from harm. Generally, a trimmer’s blade will not activate unless the operator depresses a button or lever on the device’s handle. If the trimmer is dropped, it will immediately stop cutting, protecting the user from injury.

The thick guards that sit between the blade and the handle of most trimmers serve two purposes: they protect the user’s hands from the blade, and they keep the user’s grasp on the trimmer free of obstructions like plants.

Hands down, gas powered hedge trimmers are more powerful, making them better for larger jobs. You also don’t have to worry about having extra batteries while you are on a bigger hedge trimming project. Simply keep gas and oil on hand and you can trim for hours and hours on end.

Alternatives to Hedge Trimmers

So, being the creative bunch they are. Some of the landscapers we asked had their own interesting alternatives to gas and electric hedge trimmers.

In fact, 2 different landscapers reported preferring “a vegan” to trim hedges.

Both would appear to be rather expensive and impractical tools to get the job done.

On a more serious note, some lawn care professionals simply opt to use manual pruning tools like these to get the job done.

Selecting the Right Equipment at the end of the Day

Look, it really does come down to your preferences and what your needs are. Unlike the cut and dry nature of selecting the best weedeater, hedge trimmers are more complex in nature.

For landscapers gas powered hedge trimmers are broadly preferred. But for the average homeowner or a lawn care professional that rarely prunes hedges, an electric hedge trimmer will do the trick.

Despite the overwhelming consensus that gas powered is preferred over battery in the lawn care community. Keep in mind part of that comes down to the stigma many landscapers have toward battery powered equipment.

It’s true, battery powered equipment has come a long way, but it still doesn’t completely par up to traditional lawn care equipment. And even when or if it does, convincing the lawn care community is a different challenge all together.
