If the line is too thick, it will break at slower speeds and without feeding more line through. If it is too thin, will feed through and cut off way too easily.

Your Line is Not Rolled Properly

Another possibility is that you did not roll the line properly. As trimmer line weakens at the ends, it is meant to naturally fall off.

With the extra space now under the grass guard, more line will automatically feed out of the reel. Ideally, you actually should never have to “tap” out more line.

However, in practice, occasionally having to tap out more line is perfectly normal. But of course, if you have to do it every few minutes because the line keeps breaking, that understandably becomes annoying.

It is most likely because the line is bound around the reel incorrectly, meaning it cannot automatically slip out. Follow these steps to properly roll up your trimmer line:

• Detach the spool from the weed trimmer head. Usually these can be popped off with a push and twist. If you are not sure, consult your owner’s manual for removal instructions.
• Pull off roughly 20 feet of line from your reel.
• Grab one end and find the hole in the middle of the spool.
• Stick the end into the hole.
• Pull on the line until you reach the middle of it. Now you should have two equal lengths, like shoelaces.
• Take both ends and start winding the around the spool at the same time.
• The most important thing to remember when winding the line: try to avoid crossing as much as possible. Keep wrapping straight on, and only cross slightly over when you need to start a new row. The more you cross, the more risk of the line becoming caught and causing feeding issues.
• When you have about 8 inches of line left on both sides, feed both ends through the holes on the side of the trimmer head.
• Latch the spool in place and you should be good to cut those weeds!

Too Much or Not Enough Line is Being Used at Once

If none of that works, the problem might just be with your trimming habits. Do not worry, this is easy to fix.

Either of two things are happening here: either you are letting the line become way too long, or you just are not using enough.

If your line is too long, say about a foot, it is essentially going to start slapping walls and becoming caught on fences, rather than just powering through the grass cut and moving on.

Any excess wear and tear on your line is going to break it at a much faster rate.

On the contrary, if your line is only a couple inches short, the grass tends to win the battle, not the line.

That is because without enough line and the resulting torque, it does not have enough strength to cut. Instead, the string wears out and needs to be replaced faster.

In general, it is best to keep about 8 inches of trimmer line showing for the perfect combination of an easy cut and low line usage.

Choosing your string trimmer power source has a lot to do with balancing performance, convenience, and price.

Gas offers the most power and when you run out of fuel, a fill-up only takes a few minutes. On the other hand, they’re loud, require maintenance, need an oil and gas mix, and produce emissions.

Battery-powered string trimmers have lower noise, no emissions, and very little maintenance. Plus, today’s performance can match a 30cc engine with roughly the same runtime as a tank of gas. However, cordless string trimmers can be more expensive, and charging a battery can take several hours in some cases.

Electric string trimmers have the benefits of battery-powered ones with the added bonuses of costing less and having near-infinite runtime. They typically don’t reach as high on the power scales, though, and you’re stuck dragging an extension cord all over your lawn.

String Trimmer Line Size

Most string trimmers are rated for somewhere between 0.080 and 0.105-inch line with fringe options below and above that range (one string trimmer even uses zip ties, but we don’t recommend it).

Generally speaking, smaller diameter line doesn’t do as much damage to objects it hits, such as the paint on your exterior walls, wood on your pergola, or irrigation pipes. It also gets the most runtime out of battery-powered string trimmers. As you go up in diameter, the line becomes more destructive and less energy efficient, while holding up better in tough conditions.

Best.095 Trimmer Line: Oregon 22-895 Magnum Gatorline Trimmer Line.095-inch

I loved that this line has a weld-resistant outer sheath, as welding can quickly ruin lower-quality trimmer line. At such high speeds, your line is prone to heating up, and when it gets too hot, the line can melt and fuse together.

It’s not completely irreparable, but it’ll sure put the fire hose on your plans to spend the day gardening. This is a large part of why the Oregon 22-895 is my best 095 string trimmer line.

Embedded inside that sheath is a tough inner core that’s not going to wear down quickly. Sometimes, I thought it could be a little too tough – more on that in a moment – but it does mean you get more for your money. Also, with it being a square-shaped line, you’ll get a cleaner finish on your grass when you’re done, though other shapes are available in the same brand.

Though you get less line in this spool than you might in competing brands, it goes much further. One thing worth mentioning is that you should avoid getting too close to small decorations like stakes around a flower bed. This line doesn’t break easily, so it’s got the potential to yank a stake straight from the ground and wield it like a high-speed weapon.

The great thing about this 0.80 trimmer line is that it’s suitable for your backyard yet tough enough for commercial-grade tasks. So if you’re a landscaper who doesn’t tire of seeing the outdoors even after a long day at work, then you can kill two birds with one stone using this string.

I’d suggest avoiding this line for lawns that are less well-established and filled with debris, like rocks or branches. Multi-sided lines are meant to be more resistant to breakages, but I found this line to split against hard objects just as easily as rounded lines that I’ve tried. You’ll get a cleaner cut, but don’t bank on your line lasting longer.
