Black and Decker trimmers are useful gardening tools that can help you eradicate weeds and trim your shrubs. Over time, however, your line may become worn out or broken, making your trimmer useless. Luckily you can easily replace the string and spool for your trimmer if you follow the correct procedures. While these steps will help you replace the line on most Black and Decker trimmers, your model may be old or have a different feeding method for your line. The safest way to see if your model differs is by reading the instruction manual or visiting Black and Decker’s support page.

Removing the Old Line and Spool

Turn off all power to your trimmer. To safely replace the line on your power trimmer, it’s important that it doesn’t turn on while you work on it. Unplug the trimmer or remove the ion battery that came with it. This will ensure that you won’t accidentally turn on the trimmer and injure yourself. [1] X Research source

Sit the trimmer on a table or chair. To more easily work with your Black and Decker trimmer, set it on top of a table or a chair so that you don’t have to bend over constantly to work with it. Choose a table or desk that comes up to your waist so you can easily replace the parts.

Remove the cap on the trimmer head. There will be a cap that covers your line on your Black and Decker trimmer. To remove this, use your fingers to press in the tabs that are on both sides of the cap. Once the tabs are pressed, simply lift up on the trimmer cap to remove it and expose the spool underneath.

Pull the spool from the cap. Turn over your cap to reveal the line and spool. There will be two indentations or eyelets on the side of your cap that helps hold the line in place. Pull your line free from the holes on the cap, then grab onto the spool and carefully wiggle it free from the cap. [2] X Research source

Replacing the Old Line

Secure the line to the spool and cut the line. Allow for 6 inches (15.24 cm) of slack on the end of your line after you’re done wrapping it around the spool. Cut the thread with gardening shears or sharp scissors and put the excess line through the eyelets on the spool to hold them in place. [4] X Research source

Thread and wind the other side of the spool. Repeat the steps to wind up and secure the other line on your spool. Again, follow the arrows when you are winding up the line.

Installing the Spool

Set the spool into the cap. Make sure that the eyelets on the cap and the spool are also lined up. Line up the hole in the center of the spool with the center of the cap and gently press the spool back into the cap. Once you hear a click, turn the cap over and shake it to make sure that the spool is secure.

Lace the line through the eyelets on the cap. Pull the excess line out of the eyelets on the spool and push them into the eyelets on the cap. Your spool is now ready to go back into your trimmer.

Line up the tabs on the cap and trimmer head and press down. Press down on the side tabs on your cap to fit it into the trimmer head. Lightly press on the cap until you hear a click. Your spool is now replaced.

How does the string feed itself. banging the reel on the ground worked with a previous trimmer, but not with this small Black Decker one. What can I do?

Check if it’s an automatic feeder or a bump feeder. Your old trimmer was a bump feeder, so you did the right thing when trying to feed the string, however doing this on an automatic feeder can damage your model. Read the box and instructions. If it’s an automatic feed you don’t need to do anythingit will adjust on its own. If you’ve already banged it and it doesn’t work, it’s possible you’ve damaged the feed motor.

Black Decker BEST935 13-inch string trimmer review: a budget trimmer

This low-cost corded trimmer is good enough to handle lawn edging and the odd weed but lacks the power for wilder spaces.

The Black Decker BEST935 is a simple, low-cost trimmer that is powerful enough for light work, as long as you don’t mind dragging the power cable behind you.

Want to hack back the foliage without laying out much cash? The Black Decker BEST935 string trimmer is the one for you. Priced at less than 38, this is a decent strimmer for the money, capable of cutting through light foliage without problems. It can’t handle heavier plants, though, and it has one thing that holds it back – literally. It requires a power cable to work, which gets in the way, can get damaged, and is generally just a pain to drag around behind you. But if you have a small yard and a power cable that can reach all of it, then it’s a decent pick for light trimming.

Black Decker BEST935 string trimmer review: design and build quality

The Black Decker BEST935 is a small, light trimmer that feels reasonably robust, but plasticky and cheaply constructed. It’s simple to put together: just unfold the shaft and push it into the retaining clips, then attach the single screw that holds the protective shield into place. It weighs less than 6lbs (2.7kg) but is somewhat shorter than most, at just 23.4 inches – it also has a smaller 13-inch cutting diameter. It feels comfortable to use, but the shorter shaft means that you don’t get that much reach. You can’t push the head into a rough patch of plants to start the trimming higher up. An orange button on the trimmer had allows you to rotate the head so that it cuts vertically, which makes for more comfortable lawn edging and precise cutting.

The power cable plugs into the back of the head of the trimmer, with a clip inside the handle that stops you from pulling the cable out. You’ll need to use a fairly beefy extension cable: the motor can draw up to 4 amps, which could be too much for a lightweight cable. It should be rated for at least 4 amps and should be long enough to reach all around your yard. If you have a large yard, that might cost as much as this trimmer itself.

Black Decker BEST935 string trimmer review: performance and accessories

I found the Black Decker BEST935 to be easy to use on light foliage, but it couldn’t handle heavier work. It is fine for trimming grass and the odd weed, plus tasks like edging and trimming plant heads, but it choked on heavier growth and plant stems thicker than a quarter of an inch or so.

There is no speed control on this trimmer. The trigger under the handle turns the motor on or off. You do get some degree of control as the motor takes a few seconds to spin up to full speed, though, so you can pulse it for a lighter cut. There is also no safety switch or control, but the button takes a fair amount of pressure to engage and is located inside the handle, so it is not likely to be triggered accidentally.

Most string trimmers use a bump system to let out more line when needed – you bump the bottom of the head on the ground and that releases the spool, letting more line come out. The BEST935 uses a continuous feed system instead, which means that the line is automatically let out when it breaks. That’s definitely easy to use, but it can also be too easy: if you are accidentally trying to trim something that breaks the line (like a rock or a fence post), the line will keep feeding out to replace the lost line without you realizing. That makes it easy to use more line than you realize.

That’s a bad thing as you have to load the line yourself. After disconnecting the power, you press two clips to remove the base of the head, then remove the spool. You must then manually wind the new line onto the spool, feed the line through the outlet hole and replace the spool and screw the cover back on, always being careful that the line does not become tangled or pop out of the outlet hole. It’s more of a pain than a problem, but it is a lot more hassle than the more sophisticated loading systems of the more expensive models.

Black Decker BEST935 string trimmer review: verdict

Sometimes all you need is a simple, straightforward tool to do the job. If all you need is to trim the odd weed and edge the lawn, the Black Decker Best 935 is enough for the job. However, if you are tackling larger patches of weeds (or individual weeds with stems thicker than a quarter of an inch), you would be better off getting something with a bit more power.

BlackDecker LST136 Review

If you are shopping for a new cordless string trimmer on a budget, then we think the BlackDecker LST136 is a great choice for you. This cordless string trimmer is quite effective at clearing weeds and vegetation and is fairly comfortable and easy to operate. It’s very lightweight and easy to handle and is one of the quieter trimmers that we have tested. If you are trying to get the most bang for the buck when shopping for your next tool and don’t need a heavy-duty option, then we can’t recommend the BlackDecker LST136 highly enough.

Compare to Similar Products

Our Analysis and Test Results

We did find that the BlackDecker LST136 can get a little overburdened when cutting through dense vegetation so it might not be the best cordless yard tool around if you have heavy-duty lawn maintenance tasks ahead of you.

Performance Comparison

Weed Eating

Our most important rating metric for these cordless tools is how effectively and easily they cleared weeds and other nuisance plants. We compared and scored the weed-eating efficiency of each product, how much power they have, and how easy it is to make precision cuts around fragile plants or objects. The BlackDecker LST136 isn’t the most powerful or heavy-duty option by any means but it still scored quite well compared to the rest of the tools in the group.

We found the BlackDecker LST136 to have plenty of power for most jobs but it will start to slow down when cutting through very thick stems or burly weeds. We did find it to be very effective when cutting through grasses and weeds using a side-to-side motion.

black, decker, best935, 13-inch, string

However, we did find that the guard can get in the way a bit when clearing particularly tall grass and it can get caught up and tangled if you move it in a straight line and don’t sweep it side-to-side. We did find that the guard can act as a nice guide when cutting close to the ground.

We also found it pretty easy to make detailed cuts with this string trimmer, especially since it has a low-speed setting and you can pivot the head to the side to make precise cuts.

We found that the relatively large guard can get in the way for certain cuts, especially in more confined spaces around your yard.

Ease of Use

Next, we rated and ranked how user-friendly and convenient each cordless string trimmer is to operate, looking at the difficulty of replacing the line, the comfort and ergonomics, and the weight of each tool, as well as the effectiveness of the guard. The

BlackDecker LST136 again did quite well, finishing just behind the top models.

The BlackDecker LST136 has an automatic feed to dispense more line, making it an exceptionally easy process. It also is very easy to replace, with a simple and straightforward design with only a single spinning string.

We found this cordless tool to be very lightweight and extremely easy to handle, making it one of the least cumbersome string trimmers to operate.

It’s a very comfortable tool to hold with a grippy texture on the handle that allows you to securely hold the BlackDecker LST136 for both weed eating and edging. This trimmer is very maneuverable due to its lower weight and it’s easy to reach the speed controls with your thumb without letting off the trigger.

black, decker, best935, 13-inch, string

However, it is a bit on the shorter side compared to other models, so taller users will need to either hunch over a bit or trim a little closer to your feet. This trimmer’s guard is also decently effective at stopping debris from getting thrown back at you but it tends to get in the way a bit. This model also lacks a shoulder strap.

Battery Life

Our next round of tests dealt with how long each of these tools could last on a single charge. We timed how long each trimmer could last running freely on a fully charged battery for the majority of the score, as well as awarding points for different operating modes that let you balance power and battery life. The BlackDecker LST136 did fairly well, scoring in the upper portion of the group overall.

The BlackDecker LST136 has a slightly above average runtime, lasting for just under 45 minutes when using the stock battery — about half the time of the top trimmers.

The BlackDecker LST136 does offer plenty of adjustability — almost to the point of overkill. It has six different settings, providing plenty of ability to balance power and battery life for whatever your weed-eating application is.

Noise

The last series of tests looked at how loud the BlackDecker LST136 and the other cordless string trimmers are. We used an SPL meter to measure the sound levels for the operator when holding the trimmer at an arm’s length away. The BlackDecker LST136 scored very highly, as it’s one of the quietest models we have tested.

This string trimmer measured at 85.9 dBa for the operator on our meter — around 20 dBa quieter than the loudest model we have tested.

It does have a little bit of a higher-pitched whine but it isn’t too bad.

Value

This string trimmer is a great value, making it very attractive to anyone shopping on a budget. It holds its own against other models that cost quite a bit more.

Conclusion

If you are shopping for a new string trimmer on a budget, then we can’t recommend the BlackDecker LST136 highly enough. It’s decently effective at clearing all but the toughest plants and vegetation. It’s very lightweight and easy to handle and is a great bargain option if you don’t want to pay top dollar for a high-end trimmer that probably won’t be all that much better.

Lightweight and versatile, the Black Decker LST300 weed trimmer is a great option for smaller jobs.

Top Ten Reviews Verdict

The Black Decker LST300 weed trimmer and edger is a fine choice for light to medium duty work.

Cons

Our expert reviewers spend hours testing and comparing products and services so you can choose the best for you. Find out more about how we test.

Originally known as a maker of power tools, Black Decker has also become a big name in the string trimmers, particularly models at lower price points. We recently reviewed the Black Decker LST300 electric cordless 12-inch trimmer.

Dimensions: 47 in. long (35 in. when collapsed)

Warranty: 2 years (limited)

Retailing between 80 and 100, we found the trimmer to be a very affordable option for light to medium duty work, and great for smaller yards and fence lines. It’s easy to set up and simple to use and has respectable battery life. Branded as a trimmer and an edger, we found it’s a bit more effective at trimming, but still able to hold its own as an edger.

It’s relatively quiet, and, at under 6 lbs, it’s light enough to carry around the yard for long periods of time without any discomfort. For a battery-powered trimmer, it has decent strength (particularly with a battery right off the charger), however, for really thick weeds and grasses, the LST300 does struggle a bit.

The mostly plastic construction also feeds fears that it might easily break or crack if dropped. However, there is plenty that we like about this trimmer. A pivoting handle gives the user some flexibility in the way they can hold it and its adjustable length capability does give it some versatility. Read on to find out whether the Black Decker LST300 is the right electric string trimmer for you!

Black Decker LST300: Design

There is nothing avant-garde about the design of the Black Decker LST300; for all intents and purposes, it’s a pretty standard trimmer. It’s got a coated and ergonomic handle near the ignition trigger and an adjustable handler further down, combining for a comfortable hold. Even after we used the trimmer for close to 30 minutes, it was still easy and comfortable to use.

The trimmer only comes in one color scheme: Black Decker’s signature orange and black (with a gray motor housing and a stainless steel adjustable neck). It’s a striking color combination and really does look good.

Most of the trimmer is made of plastic, which looks great out of the box, however, it is a material that’s prone to cracking and breaking if dropped or knocked over. One feature we really loved was the adjustable neck, which allows the user to make the trimmer longer or shorter, adding to its versatility.

Black Decker LST300: Features

When it comes to features, the LST300 is kind of a “what-you-see-is-what-you-get” tool. It has one speed, along with the adjustable handle and neck that we’ve already touched on.

It does feature a 0.065-inch line, fed by Black Decker’s AFS (automatic feed spool) system. The system is supposed to feel the line out to the perfect length automatically and touts itself as “no bumping required.” However, there were a few times we had to stop to pull the line out manually when it frayed or broke off. The head on the trimmer can also rotate 90 degrees so it can be used as an edger.

The string spool is quick and easy to change and the auto-feed functionality means you won’t need to keep making adjustments as you cut. The supplied string does struggle with heavier weeds, but by swapping it out for an edged string you should be able to achieve better results on stubborn overgrowth.

While the convenience of a battery-powered lawn trimmer means you forgo some of the power of a gas trimmer, the Black Decker LST300 has been designed to get the most out of its battery power. The 20-volt battery lasts for about 25 minutes of trimming and Black and Decker has utilized its own PowerDrive transmission in order to deliver more power from the motor to the cutting string, helping you cut your lawn quicker.

Another benefit of electric weed eaters is that they’re quieter and light, and the Black Decker LST300 is no exception. At just under 6 lbs it’s one of the lightest electric weed eaters we’ve reviewed, only slightly heavier than the Sun Joe TRJ13STE Electric Weed Eater, which weighs in at 5 lbs.

Black Decker LST300: Setup and assembly

Setup of the Black Decker LST300 is one of the easiest we’ve encountered. Out of the recyclable cardboard box, it’s just about ready to go. The adjustable handle and string guard are the only things that need to be attached.

The included instructions were very clear and we were ready to go to work in less than five minutes. The model includes one 20 Max V lithium-ion battery and a sleek charger. The battery was ready to go right out of the box, but we chose to put it on the charger to ensure a full and proper charge before using the trimmer. It took about 35 minutes for the battery to charge fully.

Black Decker LST300: Performance

Right off of the charger, the Black Decker LST300 comes out roaring, but as we used it for an extended period, it did start to lose some of its bite. However, what it loses in battery power, it makes up for in cordless versatility, low noise and no gas-burning exhaust.

We found the LST300 does great work on regular grass and even high weeds. Where it tends to slip up is on thicker vegetation (think nettles, overgrown crabgrass and bigger patches of dandelion weeds). The trimmer can take these down, we just found it took a little more effort to really get the thicker stuff. The trimmer can also rotate its head to become an edger, which is a nice feature and, while we thought it was better as a trimmer, the edging capabilities are serviceable.

Black Decker LST300: Care and maintenance

Like any battery powered electric yard tool, the Black Decker LST300 should be stored indoors, preferably in a cool, dry place. Storage of this trimmer is made easier by the fact it can collapse down from 47 inches long to just 35 inches. The handle can also fold up, making it easier to hang on a garage or basement wall.

We found cleaning this unit to be relatively easy. The only part that really gets dirty is the line shield, which can easily be removed and cleaned with a hose and a soft brush or a pressure washer.

String Black N Decker Weedwhacker

Black Decker LST300: Price and availability

At this price point, the Black Decker LST300 sits near the middle of the road for similar trimmers. It’s comparable in price to other similarly specced models from Ryobi and Kobalt.

Overall, models at this price tend to have similar features, and the LST300 doesn’t really stand out. If you’re looking for a 20-24V weed trimmer, this unit sits at a reasonable price. However, if you’re willing to spend 50-100 more, several brands from all over the spectrum (Milwaukee, Makita, Skil, etc.) offer 40V trimmers that will provide a bit more umph.

The Black Decker LST300 is available at Home Depot, Walmart and Amazon.com.

Black Decker LST300: User reviews

At the time of writing, the Black Decker LST300 is pretty well reviewed on Amazon. It’s got a 4.5 rating out of 4,884 global ratings, with 71% 5-star reviews.

Positive reviews praised the lightness and ease of use of this string trimmer, as well as the possibility of converting it into a lawn edger, with one user saying “I had a 2-stroke weed whacker for years, and while it murdered weeds with impunity, I felt like I spent more time fixing/adjusting it than actually whacking weeds. his little electric trimmer fixed all that. It’s about 3x lighter than the engine version, the handle adjusts to your height/angle preference, the head can be turned 90 degrees to get edges, and the lithium battery can run at full tilt for an hour plus, easily.”

Some customers had issues with the spools coming undone or being tricky to replace, which affected performance on heavier-duty jobs.

Should you buy the Black Decker LST300?

Should you buy the Black Decker LST300? The short answer is it depends. For small and medium jobs, like trimming around your house and fence or edging the sidewalk in front of your house, the Black Decker LST300 is an affordable and reasonable choice; we think it’s totally worth the money for this type of use.

However, if you are looking for a beast of a trimmer that isn’t going to be slowed down by thicker weeds and vegetation, you might want to look into a trimmer at a higher price point.

Buying guide for best blackdecker weed eaters

Do you need help taming the weeds and excess growth in your yard? A weed eater can help. BLACKDECKER, a trusted name in lawncare products, is known for its stalwart line of weed eaters. In fact, the company offers over two dozen weed eater options for the homeowner. Such a wide selection guarantees you’ll be able to find exactly what you need.

Before you invest in a BLACKDECKER weed eater, there are a few questions you can answer to help narrow down your choices. Do you want a weed eater with a curved shaft or a straight shaft? Which power option fits your needs? Which model fits your budget?

These are the kinds of questions we can help you answer so you can decide which BLACKDECKER weed eater is right for you. Read on to learn more.

As odd as it sounds, George Ballas got the idea for a weed eater while watching the cleaning brushes spin round and round in a car wash. His original invention used heavy-duty trimmer line attached to a whirling popcorn can.

What a weed eater can do for you

A weed eater slices through grass, weeds, and other lawn growth. You can use it to trim those impossible-to-reach areas – under and along fences, in corners, and around obstacles and ornaments – or you can turn it on its side and use it as an edger. Indeed, a weed eater is a highly adaptable device. With just a twist, you can change its function to neaten your lawn wherever it needs work.

Here’s a look at three of the modes offered by BLACKDECKER weed eaters: trimmer mode, mower mode, and edger mode.

The trimmer mode is the standard operating mode for weed eaters. This is what you use to trim grass and weeds in areas where your mower can’t reach.

BLACKDECKER’s detachable mower deck can be purchased with your weed eater or separately. This handy little attachment effectively turns a weed eater into a lawn mower that’s suitable for small yards and steep hills.

Most BLACKDECKER weed eaters feature a wheel that acts as a guide to facilitate edging work. It is important to note that even if the model you are considering is only designated a “trimmer,” all you must do to turn the tool into an edger is rotate the head 90 degrees. The only difference: models designated as trimmers do not have a guide wheel.

We research the overall quality of each BLACKDECKER weed eater we consider. We want to know if components like the shaft, string feed, handle, and controls are durable and easy to operate.

Performance is a key factor for consumers when buying a weed eater. We find out whether BLACKDECKER models are reliable at cutting through thick grass and weeds and if they are able to neatly trim tight spaces around walkways, fences, and other objects.

We look at product weight when shortlisting products, as weight is a key factor for consumers who need a tool that’s easy to maneuver.

We research the two types of weed eaters offered by BLACKDECKER: corded and cordless. Electric-powered models have cords that may get in the way, but they offer unlimited runtime. Battery-powered machines require recharging, but they offer cord-free operation.

When considering a battery-powered weed eater, we find out how long the battery lasts with each charge. We also find out if it has the proprietary PowerCommand function that increases battery life.

Before recommending a battery-powered tool, we check to see if a battery is included with purchase. Some models include two batteries, optimizing runtime.

Shaft shape is an important feature of weed eaters. We research products with both varieties — curved and straight — for ease of use and durability.

We research string feed systems to determine how effectively they distribute the trim line. BLACKDECKER offers two options: an EASYFEED system that works with the touch of a button and an automatic feed spool that distributes line automatically via a built-in sensor.

We research weed eaters to determine their versatility at accomplishing different lawn maintenance tasks. Some models have detachable components that convert the tool to a mower and edger.

We learn all we can about voltage power when selecting products for our shortlist. The greater the voltage, the more powerful the machine.

Corded and cordless BLACKDECKER weed eaters

You’ll need to decide whether you want a corded or cordless weed eater. BLACKDECKER offers both options.

A corded tool is one that you plug in. You will never run out of power with a plug-in weed eater, but your mobility will be somewhat limited, as you can only work where an extension cord can reach. The more amps you have, the more powerful the tool. With a plug-in tool, 16 amps is the equivalent of 1 HP.

Price: BLACKDECKER corded weed eaters range in price from 40 to 80. Price is closely tied to power output. For example, a BLACKDECKER weed eater with 3.5 amps of power costs around 40. A BLACKDECKER weed eater with 7.5 amps costs closer to 80.

A cordless tool is powered by a rechargeable battery. You will enjoy unlimited mobility with a cordless weed eater, but the runtime will be limited. The more volts your battery has, the more powerful the tool will be.

Price: BLACKDECKER cordless electric weed eater tend to range from 80 to 220. Just like corded weed eaters, the price is closely tied to power output. For example, a BLACKDECKER weed eater with 20 volts of power costs between 80 and 105. A tool with 40 volts ranges from 100 to 145, and a tool with 60 volts ranges from 150 to 220.

Other considerations

Shaft

For the long part of your weed eater, the shaft, you have two options: curved or straight.

A curved shaft is shorter and a little lighter. For the less-experienced user, the angle can help in difficult or tight spaces. Because the shaft is curved, the cable that whirls the string will endure greater wear and tear, making this type of trimmer less durable.

A straight shaft is longer and usually a little heavier. Because there is less wear and tear on the drive system, these models last longer. Professional landscapers opt for straight shaft weed eaters.

Cutting swath

This is the amount of cutting or trimming a weed eater can do in one pass. Many BLACKDECKER machines offer 12-inch and 14-inch options. Other models have just one choice available: 13 inches. The weed eater line does offer a smaller 10-inch model as well.

Speeds

Most BLACKDECKER weed eaters feature a variable-speed trigger. The tighter you squeeze the trigger, the faster the unit will go. Others have a dial that you can use to select your speed.

Some BLACKDECKER weed eaters have a two-speed setting that gives you two choices. In the first position, the trimmer spins at a slower speed, thereby increasing runtime. In the second position, the trimmer spins faster, thereby decreasing runtime.

String feed

BLACKDECKER has two different systems for replenishing string on newer model trimmers: AFS (Automatic Feed Spool) and EASYFEED. A weed eater with an AFS system has sensors that detect when the trimmer line has frayed or broken and automatically feeds more line out. A weed eater with an EASYFEED system gives the user ultimate control. While the machine is trimming, you simply depress the EASYFEED button to extend the cutting line. Because you only advance the line when it is needed, there is the potential for less waste due to automatic feeding.
